Pure Hymns.......2006-11-09
Pure Hymns is true listening pleasure. It calms your spirit and brings you into the presence of the true and living God.
A Wonderful Praise And Worship Resource!.......2002-06-23
I am somewhat new in my walk with God. Music has always been a major part of my life (until a year ago, it was mostly just heavy metal music I listened to) and when I experienced a life changing event (being baptised in the name of Jesus Christ and being filled with the Holy Ghost), I wasn't sure what I would have a desire to listen to. I found many great Christian CDs and love to worship God with something playing in the background to help me enter into a deeper worship. Now, don't take this wrong. This CD of John Tesh's "Pure Hymns" is not merely background music. It is a terific statement of the power of worship music and John's personal gift of translating, writing, and performing. I am so happy I purchased this CD (my first but not the last of John's music). We have Home Friendship Group every week and often spend time just praying and worshipping. I am going to use this the next time we get together. It is sure to bring everyone closer to God as we worship and pray. I like listening to is during my own personal prayer and worship. I highly recommend this to everyone. Thank you Mr. Tesh. Your gift of music is truly God given.
Wonderful & inspirational.......2002-04-23
I think that this is the most soothing music ever! I makes me feel at peace and relaxed, it is perfect to unwind and fall asleep after a long day.
A relaxing praise to the Lord.......2002-01-22
I have listened to this CD over and over, it helps me get started in the morning. It is very uplifting and gives you a great peace. God has truly blessed John and all of the musicians to make this possible. I am a vocalist, and find these pieces easy to sing with and enjoy. Thank you John for all your hard work and for blessing my life with your music. GOD BLESS YOU!! Your Deeper Faith CD is wonderful.

Album Description
"The Lucidity Project" is an orchestral recording with melodic / contemporary Classical roots. Michael Halaas has joined forces with Joan Jeanrenaud of the famed Kronos Quartet. Each track is a layered piece consisting of piano and many layered cellos, incorporating pulsating ethnic percussion in some places.
Customer Reviews:
Piano/cello in Halaas style - gorgeous!.......2002-08-09
With his latest release, Halaas combines his phenomenal piano playing with the legendary Joan Jeanrenaud (formerly of Kronos Quartet), cellist extraordinaire. Michael weaves the two instruments together with great success creating complex textures and moods in each song. As with all his albums, these songs convey a personal journey to which we relate as we listen. The cello adds a new voice to the dialogue, and the songs are utterly captivating.
New subtleties reveal themselves on each listening. These songs are absolutely gorgeous, filled with layers upon layers of rich sound. An explanation of the musical wizardy appears on the inside jacket: "To create the textures of sound found on this album, each instrument was played by Michael or Joan and recorded individually. The tracks were then carefully layered to produce the resulting pieces. All songs on this album are combinations of music recorded on the piano, cello, guitar, and a variety of percussion instruments."
It has all the clean, polished sound of a major label album (if you have a nice sound system, turn it up!). With this album, Michael has again shown his incredible versatility by producing a wonderfully subtle and personal musical journey. If you like Michael's other work or are just a fan of the piano or cello, be sure to check out this album for a refreshing new sound. Bravo Michael!

How you view this niche product from pianist John Tesh (an assortment of pop songs from date movies that Tesh has reworked as piano-based instrumentals) depends largely on how you regard the material he has selected. Pure Movies 2 leans heavily on mass-audience two-hankie favorites: Lionel Richie's "Endless Love," Phil Collins's "Against All Odds," Michel Legrand's "Brian's Song" and "Summer of '42," and so on. The overall mood is soft and sentimental, and Tesh's playing and arranging regularly succeed at triggering the swift, surface-level emotional responses inherent in fast-acting movie music. Tesh works in both a solo mode and an ensemble setting, only occasionally goosing his pieces with swelling, emote-with-me strings ("Brian's Song," "Somewhere in Time"). Happily, his approach is generally low-key on most tracks, and he shines on pop-ensemble pieces such as "She's Like the Wind" (from Dirty Dancing) and "The Crying Game." The disc's best moment? The first track, "You'll Be in My Heart," where Tesh takes Collins's theme-setter from the animated Tarzan and retools it into a heart-racing, reach-for-the-stars gem. Two ballad-like vocal tracks are included: "When She Loved Me" (from Toy Story 2, sung by Richard Page), and the disc's lone Tesh original, "Heart of the Sunrise," featuring Christian vocalist Cindy Morgan. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
Pure, delightful and relaxing music.......2007-01-03
I like almost all of the John Tesh orchestrations. His compositions are so delightful to listen to and very easy to enjoy as either background music or thoughtful listening.
2 stars - and from a John Tesh fan!.......2001-10-11
This CD contains a nice selection of music suitable for piano and orchestration - a pair from Phill Collins (You'll be in my heart and Against all odds) and Michael Legrand (Summer of 42 and Brian's Song)and a few "standards" - What a Wonderful World, Evergreen and the more recent Take My Breath Away.
I would have rated it higher, but for the stilted piano playing and unimaginative orchestration especially on - What A Wonderful World, The Crying Game and She's Like the Wind (not a great tune anyways!)
This CD has a real lack of feeling; its almost seems as if all the players are just going through the motions. Come on John - try adding some finesse or a few chords...something!!
This was a real disappointment for me - and I do own and enjoy a number of his other collections.
I would save your money and try some Richard Clayderman.
Very Easy to Enjoy.......2000-06-26
As with Pure Movies, John Tesh has put together a terrific CD. I'm not as thrilled with the two vocals, but overall, it is very well done and well worth the purchase.
Listener from VA.......2000-05-18
If you liked the first Pure Movies CD you will LOVE this one. John has captures each song wonderfully. "You'll Be In My Heart" is a masterpiece. A must have for any Tesh fan (and for those who aren't for that matter). It's that good.
Buy It Now - You Won't Regret It.......2000-05-05

One-Hit Wonder?.......2003-08-05
After hearing Cafe Espana, I bough this CD in anticipation of similar quality of composition and performance throughout. Sadly, no other track comes close to the hypnotic, exotic excellence of Cafe Espana, although some are good.
Of course, this is purely subjective, but I've had similar experiences with other collections from either Dave Samuels and Paquito D'Rivera. There often seems to be one track that reels me in, and the rest seem like filler.
This CD is good, but not great by any means. If you don't already own the track Cafe Espana, the CD is worth it for that alone.
Excellent Latin Jazz Album !!!!!.......2002-01-16
Paquito D'Rivera and Dave Samuels are names that are common among excellence in Latin Jazz performances; this is absolutely a must-have for those music lovers that are looking for some'n fresh, rythmic and with a lot of flavor. You'll love every minute of it !!!!!!

Eclectic instrumentals .......2007-05-30
This is a spirited session of instrumental jams, heavy on a R&B vibe, but also some fusion, rock, and blues thrown in for variety. The players are hot. If you've never heard of Jimmy Herring your in for a treat if you like good guitar players. Whether he shreds a distorted lead or lays down some clean picking, he does it all tastefully. The rhythm section of Ricky Keller (bass) and Jeff Sipe (drums) are intense and manic. They pound hard and heavy, and the Rev. Oliver Wells' keyboard playing is refined. There are eight weird but short interludes that irritate me (don't know why they wanted these on the disc), but that should not distract anyone who likes great instrumental music from checking this out.
ONE OF THE BEST.......2003-09-04
After some of the negative reviews, I was a bit sceptical. WOW what a pleasant surprise. Just when you thought you have heard it all, along comes another one. After seeing TRIBAL TEC with SCOTTY HENDERSON a couple of years back, I didn't expect anyone to improve on HENDERSON's take on ACID JAZZ. Well, HERRING does just that. If you like acid jazz with a tinge of blues and a wicked sense of humor, than this is definitely for you. HERRING is as good or better than just about anyone in the jazz genre. This is exciting musik from a band of masters and contains any number of highlights. Beautifull tone, georgous compositions, awesome variety and a palpable sense of fun and enthusiasm that is infectious.
Despite the obvious ability of all concerned it never descends into a contest. No giant ego's need massaging and these virtuosos seem to revel in each others company.
A must have in any guitarist's CD collection.
A Must Have!.......2001-11-09
I have enjoyed listening to Jimmy Herring for over 20 years and I ADORE this CD. My personal favorites are the guitarguments with Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring "talking/arguing" with each other. Very innovative and hilarious! Some of my others favorites include MudBug, Genetic Drift, Augusta's Ankle and Albright Special. Col. Bruce Hampton throwing in a few words of his own in Extra Cold makes listening to this CD all the more fun!
Jimmy Herring, T.Lavitz and Jeff Sipe make a great combination. A must have for any collection!
Music to my ears.......2001-05-29
Jimmy Herring is simply one of the best guitarists playing today. His fiery style has graced the work of ARU, Frogwings, the Allman Brothers (where he more than ably replaced Dicky Betts on tour last year) and others. Here, on his first solo outing, he surrounds himself with other top players to deliver a high energy instrumental potpourri. Although equally adept at rock and blues playing, he leans here more towards the jazzier side of rock. On the opening cut "Raging Torrent" drummer Jeff Sipe sets the tone with an uptempo beat leading to some furious soloing by Herring. One of my favorite cuts "Rainbow" also features some beautiful piano work and cool time changes. The whole CD seems to move effortlessly though various musical directions, never losing it's freshness or impact. One minor negative: I'm not sure what the point was in placing short (i.e 30 second) noisy interludes between most of the features tracks, as I found these somewhat annoying. If you could program these out, you'd be left with one of the finest instrumental recordings in recent memory. Jimmy Herring may not be a household name, but this CD is further evidence that he's one of the finest players on the scene today.
The best I've ever heard from Jimmy Herring.......2001-05-19
This CD is absolutely amazing. It is definately the best I have ever heard from Jimmy Herring. Not only that but Jeff Sipe (Leftover Salmon, Aquarimu Rescue Unit) is incredible in it too, as are everyone else for that matter! The song with Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks Band) has some of the best guitar I've ever heard. Do not underestimate this CD. Buy it.

Problem with APP Anthology Mastering.......2007-03-15
I have a question. On the APP Anthology CD that I got, each track begins 2 seconds early in the PREVIOUS track. Is this just the CD I have or were all CDs made like this? It IS an original, not a bootleg.
If I want to hear the beginning 2 seconds of track 14, I have to listen to the end of track 13.
HELP!
Boring.......2005-09-08
Not exactly the cream of the crop when it comes to Alan Parsons ...
Two songs away from a perfect 5 stars.......2005-08-09
There's not much to say - talented writing, exquisite musicianship, and shimmering production. So why only four stars? We all think we can compile a better anthology than the artists and/or studios, so here's my 'better anthology' - axe 'Hawkeye', and include 'Lucifer' and the admittedly-ubiquitous 'Sirius'. Now THAT'S a five-star album.
Tasteful collection of Parson's .......2004-11-30
The Alan Parsons Project usually included one or more instrumental pieces on their albums. I haven't listened to all of Parsons' albums, but what I've heard I really like, and I like the instrumental tracks as well or more than the vocal tracks--especially 'I Robot' and 'Where's the Walrus'.
This compilation gathers some of the best instrumentals in one place, nicely sequenced. They are stylistically similar enough that you could believe that this wasn't a compilation if you didn't know better, with the exception of 'Hawkeye', which sounds like a reject from the 'Flashdance' soundtrack.
This isn't really a good way to get to know Alan Parsons' work (the CD 'I Robot' is a great place to start, if all you've ever heard is 'Eye in the Sky' on the radio), but it's a nice way to enjoy his instrumental work without having to buy all his CDs.

Nobody fully understands the effect lightning has on it's victims........2005-06-14
Man...or Astro-Man? is a contemporary surf rock group. They incorporate a bit of science fiction feel to their music, even going so far as to add audio clips from old sci-fi movies to their records. If you like modern surf music, you should enjoy this album.
Sounds of Space With Men Playing It.......2001-08-19
Just another exhilarating album from Man or Astroman? This being their 4th full length album, is as good as their predecessors. The members of Man or Astroman? at this time are Birdstuff, Star Crunch, CoCo the Electronic Monkey Wizard, and Captain Zeno. Project Infinity is just wonderful, it has cover and original songs, the covers being The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Manta Ray, and a great cover of The Surfaris classic called Surfari, although Man or Astroman? renamed it Alpha Surfari.
Escape Velocity i sa great song to open the album with and it just lets the listeners know just what they're in store for. Another great song is the one named (Classified) which in the Cd version is actually number 3 in between Sferic Waves and Transmissions from Venus. In the Cd version, Mach One is also a track that you can't hear, being the jesters that Man or Astroman? are with their sense of humor.
From original to cover songs, Man or Astroman? have put out another great album. Just remember that if you didn't find their previous albums entertaining, don't expect to hear something different and new. This is just classic Man or Astroman? in their best years of their recording careers.
The Future is Now!.......1999-08-07
If you are a MOAM fan, BUY THIS NOW. If you are not a MOAM fan, buy this is and you might become one. The combination of rockin' surf guitars and samples from B-grade movies creates a very cool futuristic/retro sound that will get stuck in your head and raise your pulse rate. If you are a fan of science fiction or guitar rock, you'll love this album! Even if you normally wouldn't get a surf album, give this a try. This is truly unique stuff.
instrumental surf-space rock at it's best.......1999-03-22
Definitely one of their best. It captures the energy of their live performances which are unbelievably exciting and funny. This album made them my favorite band of all time.
More Great sounds from the Astro-band.......1999-02-06
As with all MOAM albums, this one has all the usual surf guitar tunes and bizzare space noises to keep any surf guitar fan happy. The cover says it all - 'Sounds of men in space with sounds!'

Outstanding.......2006-11-08
This is undoubtedly the best Jimmy Herring record to date, Not only Herring but everyone else on the record is amazing, Jeff Sipe is one of the greatest drummers who is performing with Trey Anastasio and Phil Lesh and ARU has never been more vibrant, Greg Osby from M-Base is completely on the left, and its such a treat to hear him with a rock guitarist like Jimmy. Jason Crosby from the Robert Randolph Band is right on and so is Ricky Keller.
This record is not for dance types but for music fans that enjoy cerebral music. The music on this is very spontaneous and needs a very careful listen.
A Waste Of Time.......2006-04-08
This has got to be the most relentless display of gratuitous wanking ever committed to record. First of all, the cd track listing of thirteen separate pieces is very deceptive and dishonest. The entire cd is one long (73 minutes) boring jam that starts nowhere and goes nowhere. The music is excessively intense and tasteless dislaying none of the hallmarks of musical maturity characterized by restraint, finesse, dynamics, inventiveness, etc. Save your money.
A purchase I wish I had not made..........2006-02-11
Two stars is an exaggeration. I was surprised that this music did not comprise of anything which stuck with me. It was way too unstructured for my listening pleasure. I do not mind when musicians go into the studio/session without any preconceived ideas or even framework for the songs (LTE, Bozzio, Levin & Stevens, & Attention Deficit are all examples of pure genius for an outcome w/o having things written or rehearsed prior to). The actual sound of the guitar almost sounds like an additional saxaphone at times. Some of the musicianship is worthy. Yet I am now looking to get rid of the CD I purchased (and that is saying a lot)!
Easily the deepest "jam" band improv to date ..........2006-01-24
One look at the line up and you will immediately know that these cats can play ... and they do! This is easily the best "jam" band improv to date; the chops are right there (okay, nearly) with Hellbog/Lane, Attention Deficit, Liquid Tension Experiment, Ohm, etc. The music flows in and out of tempos, timbres and textures, alternately filling and freeing the sonic palette, seamlessly growing from one idea to the next (there are actually only four long continuous pieces of music on the CD, divided for whatever reason into the separate track titles).
The release could only have benefitted from a few more infectous grooves -- a few more hummable melodies.
Project Z Lincoln Memorial - The Peak of Creativity.......2005-12-10
I finally got my copy of Project Z and casually put it into my computer's media player. BIG MISTAKE! This is not casual music by a long shot. My first reaction was ecch, this is way too avante garde and sounds excessively chaotic. I thought, why is everyone talking about this? To me, it's just noise.
About a week passed and I kept thinking ...Jeff Sipe...Jimmy Herring...Greg Osby...I can't just write this recording off, especially since the musicians are top shelf, and, I didn't even listen to the whole thing. I have to give it another go.
I put the cd in my big rig and cranked it up. Well, that's all it took, I heard it, I "got it", and I dug it! It's spontaneous collective improvisation done at the very highest level of creativity! Every note is incredibly powerful, meaningful, and contributes beautifully to the overall sound. Don't be confused by that. THIS STYLE IS NOT FOR THE TIMID. There are no "songs" here, no melodies you'll be humming along to, and no way to describe it without getting technical and turning off the casual listener. You have to pay strict attention to the entire performance note by note as if you were playing along with them to really appreciate what they're doing. The musicians on Project Z follow each other musically like the perfect ballet of a large school of herring (no pun intended, but sometimes I just can't help myself).
If you like the collective improvisation style of music, you will probably also enjoy "J.D. Hopkins and the Sons of Rhythm" (my personal favorite). In the case of Project Z, the improvisation is tremendously high energy, fast paced, and the changes are rapid fire with exceptional hand/ear coordination. J.D. on the other hand adds more groove and space for the soloist.
Overall, being the Jazz Rock Fusion old-timer that I am, I found the music to be exceptionally well done. It's a "hard listen" for sure, but good enough to be an excellent choice for the serious minded fan. You may not play it as often as other cd's in your collection, but when you do play it, you'll appreciate the multi-level quality of this music for years.

The thinking behind Pure Orchestra is as follows: select 11 familiar melodies composed by New Age-related artists, arrange them for a 60-member orchestra, then hope something special happens. Alas, nothing much does. This installment from John Tesh's music factory is a decent, well-intentioned effort that may find fans among listeners drawn to symphonic renditions of pop music. Yet for anyone who holds dear the compositions addressed on Pure Orchestra (Enya's "Book of Days," Jim Brickman's "Picture This," "Marching Season" by Yanni, and so on), these lightweight, soundtrack-like interpretations will probably only make you long to hear the originals. Tesh's role here is only as a producer, not a performer, though he does include two original, though uneventful, pieces of his own ("Song for Jennifer" and "Blue"). Kenny G's "Havana" sounds as though its re-creation was being handled by 101 Strings. Meanwhile, the interpretations of two Yanni tracks pale compared to what can be found on Live at the Acropolis, and truly affecting solo pieces such as Brickman's "Angel Eyes" and "Longing/Love" by George Winston gain nothing by orchestral treatment. Sometimes it's better to leave well enough alone. --Terry Wood

Like taking a scented bath in sheer symphonic sound..........2004-12-09
This album comes in handy when you want to take a break from all those Mancini, Bacharach, John williams etc. reissues. The program is drawn from compositions of top New Age artists all arranged for a sixty piece orchestra. The arrangements are quite weighty for the most part with a lot of bravado during the big moments. Strings breeze from speaker to speaker, with glissening brass and horns throughout. Yanni, Chip Davis, and Tesh himself have all used orchestras extensively. Keep in mind
John Tesh does not perform on the album; he produces and had a hand in choosing the selections. One does not have to be a New Age fan to enjoy this disc; in fact I was not even familiar with most the compositions. When your in the mood for a semiclassical atmosphere this will fit the bill. Add a star if you think this album will inspire you to pursue more on the original artists.
Pure Orchestra.......2004-08-11
I loved it! I enjoyed every piece on the album. I have played it several times and have enjoyed just as much each time. I bought a copy for my Sister & Brother-in-law.
Tesh, a savior..... maybe, just maybe.......2003-07-31
If you are looking for some powerful and great new age music, and who is, this disc is not for you. i feel like i should be crossing a finish line in the olympics every time i hear tesh. to call the music corny would be the greatest compliment, and accomplishment for tesh to this day. much worse words are needed to truely describe the music of the infamous, john tesh. now, if you dont take my word, and you actually go through with the purchase of this cd, please, please, make sure your running shoes are laced, be sure to have plenty of water and run that mile. make sure there is something for you to run through at the end of the mile, and time it so a big orchestra stab hits at that moment. well, i dont care for tesh, but i am looking very much forward to the day when tesh, hasselhoff, kevin bacon, keanu reeves (sp) & william shatner all join forces to create a monster, star-laden group, that all sorts of people will buy, even though it truely smells of week old britches that have been soiled and sitting in the sun.
Did not reach its fullest potential.......2003-01-04
I hate to be the only partly dissenting review so far (taking a deep breath), but here goes:
This is a wonderful album in concept, but earns about a C+ in execution. The song selection is wonderful - truly some of the best melodies from the modern "new age" genre. (I agree with John Tesh in his liner notes: "...'new age' music never really gets much respect as a musical genre. It's a shame, because I believe these melodies to be strong and vital.") Unfortunately, this album may not advance the "new age" genre's reputation as he (or I) had hoped.
It is vital to note that John Tesh didn't do the arranging or orchestrating on this album. One can almost immediately hear it doesn't have his trademark lush, full sounds. Arranger, orchestrater, and conductor J. Eric Schmidt didn't take full advantage of his source material. Most of his arrangements sound thin, especially considering the intent was to fill-out the songs with a 60 piece orchestra. Almost every piece sounds rushed and too staccato. There's no hallmark fermatta-type chords one can hang on to and truly luxuriate in.
Though I do enjoy a few pieces on this album, the tracks I'm most disappointed in are the songs with which I'm most familiar. A couple of examples: Jim Brickman's "Angel Eyes", normally a very pensive and peaceful piece, is so fast it sounds like the conductor just couldn't wait to get out of the studio. Enya's "Book of Days" starts out impressively, but again, there's an underlying rushed feeling and Schmidt changes some of the original chords in the chorus that sound like either lazy arranging or mistakes. The horns in the 2nd and 3rd choruses sound really frail, almost pathetic.
Ultimately, this is a collection of great songs that under poor management falls flat and short of its grander intent. One can enjoy it simply because the skeletons of each piece is so strong. The fleshing out leaves something to be desired.
Uplifting.......2001-10-20
This is the album I selected to be played around the clock in the hospital room of a dear friend who was in a coma. Every selection is uplifting, the melodies and instrumentation beautiful. There are no howling wolves, crashing waves, or dripping water...just music that makes you feel good all over. I am buying it for my dad who is a classical music purist (distrusts the contemporary composers.) It will convert him immediately!

good smoking music.......2007-01-04
this is a chill album with some good beats. it's not as good as the first one but there are some great songs on it. the whole thing is great as background music
Excellent.......2005-10-28
I'm coming from hearing Export quality first, then Desi Vibes (remastered). I thought Export quality to be an EXCELLENT album, very infectious. It's got that dance music done right kind of feeling to it. And if that makes you shudder, keep in mind that by 'done right' I mean produced well, creatively arranged and done with a quality aesthetic which holds throughout the album. Desi vibes is a little more stripped down, and a little more raw than export quality. Export quality shows a direct evolution in the production of their music, but desi vibes just has that rhythmic looped grit that Export quality JUST evades. The CD is very rhythmic, with various eastern instruments, scratches, one mc, and a plethora of creative and enjoyable melodies - while kicking out that constant beautiful backbone hip hop breakbeat.
The music is upbeat, well crafted and layered. Excellent, excellent CD. Has been in rotation constantly
the drone that refreshes.......2005-09-27
I loved Dum Dum Project's subsequent album, Export Quality, but apparently for the wrong reasons. I love this album too, let's hope for better reasons.
My favorite track is Mind Expansion, whose eternal loop blends what sounds like a clueless tourist's question with a more dedicated practitioner's command. Jackson Heist is a close second, somehow combining a relentless beat with a loose sashay. Also frequently resident in my player is In Flight, which lives up to its name (somehow I feel I should be lining up at Customs when it's over ... OK, OK, I realize they're based in NY).
But the whole album hangs together - the drone that refreshes.
(Note: I am listening to the earlier 1999 edition, but for this review I don't incluide the 3 tracks that this new 2004 edition lacks.)
Outstanding East-West fusion CD.......2004-07-08
This is my favorite CD. It's a great, lively, tap-your-feet, east-west fusion CD. Here's what it's not:
- too dancey/hip-hop
- too indian
- too anything
It's an especially awesome train/car commute CD - keeps you awake and humming along. Buy this now!!
