Old School Luv.......2005-08-04
Every old school collector needs to have this one in their collection. Not to collect dust but to share with the world.
The seeds of 3+3.......2005-01-24
BROTHER BROTHER BROTHER is an album in which the Isleys soon-to-be platinum 3+3 formula really gels. Ernie, Marvin & Chris made appearances on previous T-Neck albums, but their talents were used to recycle way too many "It's Your Thing" riffs. This album blends the right amount of covers (the title track, "Sweet Season") and great original material ("Work To Do", "Layaway"). The 10 1/2 minute bluesy take on Carole King's "It's Too Late" is lively due to Ronald's soaring vocals and Ernie's wailing guitar. And the beautiful closer "Love Put Me On The Corner" is perhaps the first great original Isley ballad, and a huge improvement over the insipid ballads on the GET INTO SOMETHING album. BROTHER BROTHER BROTHER gave the Isley Brothers the sound that was used in full effect on their breakthrough album 3+3.
Gotta love it!.......2004-09-28
This album was a change of pace from all of the other soul albums of that day (heavier emphasis on lead guitar, covers of songs made famous by pop and country artists). It is awesome, especially their remake of "It's Too Late." A must for any true Isleys fan!
soul at its best...........2003-12-29
All of the Isleys early work without the younger Isleys is just as good with them. But these early workouts are more raw-stripped down and pop-oriented. Ron Isley has a way of making country, and rock remakes sound like they were never before recorded. Not too many black artists can do that. To get a taste of the "Real Isleys" before the "Mr. Biggs" persona, get this with "Get into something", and "Givin' it back"
Soulful classic!.......2001-06-02
A completely good listen from beginning to end. The remakes of "Put a Little love in You Heart" and the title cut are pleasantly moving, as well as "Lay Away" and the better known "Work To Do" (this original version beats the Vanessa Williams remake by a mile)! An unknown classic is the haunting conclusion "Love Put Me on The Corner" which I defy anyone to listen to just once!

Socially conscious and sonically profound.......2007-07-06
There's a lot of references to family on this record. They're not just talking about their own brotherhood, but that of the world. The title is a Biblical reference--and a moral dilemma. Are we our brothers' keepers? Listen to the music to hear this legendary group's answers. The music's heart wrenching and uplifting. Another great job by a legendary family that I'd call brothers of my heart.
Our sons and daughters from New Orleans.......2005-09-04
It's the Saturday of the week of Hurricane Katrina. I was listening to the community radio station in Boulder/Denver last night, KGNU.org. And I heard the most stunning song, that I came to learn was "Sons and Daughters" from "Brother's Keeper."
I came to this site, and appreciated what the reviewer Tyler from Denver said about the song, how it's an "indictment of indifference to the rifts in society that could one day blow it apart."
It appears that day has arrived.
Thankfully we have artists like the Neville Brothers to help us through.
I'm looking forward to hearing this entire CD.
Passes the test with flying colors.......2004-11-10
I test music purchases in a simple way. You hear 1 good song, think about buying, but too many things just have 1 good cut. 2 good songs, OK, maybe a good bet, worth a shot. 3 good songs, drop down your hard earned money. Any more than that, you better not wait it might go out of print. With Brother Blood, Sons & Daughters My Brothers Keeper, and the absolutely great Fearless, this is a must buy.
Musically diverse, socially aware, spiritually alive.......2000-04-10
As the title suggests, "Brother's Keeper" mixes social awareness and messages of hope and tolerance with the Neville Brothers' usual eclectic collection of grooves. It's music that you can dance and sing to, but it also makes you aware that there's a world out there that isn't always pretty. And it urges the listener to get involved in that world.
The best example of socially aware funk is "Brother Jake," which laments the death of a character claimed by the streets. It rocks powerfully, with a gospel tinge, but there's nothing mindless about it. It's a strong portrait of a tough world that takes lives.
"Sons and Daughters" tiptoes toward rap. Charles Neville's powerful oration warns us not to forsake the young people, our lifeblood, whom he says are "being led to the slaughter." It's an indictment of indifference to the rifts in society that could one day blow it apart. At the end it strays from the spoken word, mixing in a spare, powerful guitar and Charles' voice rising toward song with the words, "You can't stop/running water/You can't hide/the fire that burns inside..."
There's also balladry that gives Aaron Neville a chance to display his unique sense of soul and his wonderful falsetto, in "Fearless." "Jah" delivers a reggae feel, and the title cut blends another testimony by Charles with the biblical admonition to "be my brother's keeper, though he be strong or weaker. I got to lend a helping hand."
For straight-ahead gospel, there's "Steer Me Right," which shows off the band's on-the-money harmonies and straight-from-the-gut emotion.
Listening to a Neville Brothers release is like dropping by on a warm Friday evening to hang out with a great group of friends who are never boring and who have a million ways to deliver a point. This is a neglected release, but it shouldn't be. Pick it up and enjoy a few grooves packed with a message.

Better Than Nothing.......2004-04-02
Marva Whitney recorded some of the funkiest and soulful tracks ever recorded by the James Brown machine. It is too bad that Polygram has made them unavailable on CD.
Soul Brothers Records of England put this record out. While I commend them for their effort to make this music available, the remastering job reveals the use of phonograph records. They got careless in the process leaving some tracks with noisy phonograph clicks and pops.(an audiophiles nightmare) The selection of tracks is excellent and some tracks such as "It's My Thing" and "I Made A Mistake" are remastered very well where rare recordings like the duet "Sunny" are scratchy and unnerving.
If You are a Marva Whitney Fan like me, you will probably buy this record. Audiophiles, Stay clear of this record.
Simply incredible.......2004-02-11
Simply put, if you love soul music, you need this CD. Acquire it at any cost. Mortgage your house if you must. It's worth it.
Oh my Lord! You'll need a cold shower after this!.......2003-08-19
FUNKY. INTENSE. SEARING. You want me to go on? I can. This album contains nary a weak track, and we are lucky it's available on CD.
Marva Whitney was one of the greatest vocalists Mr. James Brown worked with. Her voice is a force of nature; raw, gutsy, passionate. Mr. Brown wrote or co-wrote most of this album, in addition to producing and arranging it. He's also evident throughout on backing vocals and organ. If you love James Brown and you don't know about this, it's time to order it. In fact, if you love the music of James Brown it is literally impossible to not love this. Guaranteed.
The band works these grooves like a well-oiled machine; every instrument has a distinct purpose, nothing is out of place. It's almost supernatural how funky this music is. Even the slower tunes are funky. Leave it to James Brown to take a classic song like the Isley Brothers "It's Your Thing", re-write it, and basically obliterate it. Don't get me wrong, "It's Your Thing" is a great track, but when you hear Marva Whitney declare "It's MY Thing" you will believe her!
Two of the tracks are intrumentals, and they kick. "Shades Of Brown", in particular, is a stanky slab of nastiness.
One of my favorite moments on the whole record: In "If you Don't Work, You can't Eat", when James Brown instructs Ms. Whitney to call for Maceo to blow a solo. She calls for him, but even after Maceo is into his solo, James can't stop screaming out "Call him!!!!" It's just one of the many mindblowingly funky moments that defines this album.
There's a bunch of Bonus Tracks at the end of the album tracks. In all but one case, they equal the quality of the previous material. That one track that doesn't quite cut it (second to last track) is a Burt Bacharach tune. By no means an embarrassment, it just kinda comes across awkwardly, feels out of place.
The sound quality is less than perfect, though considering it's age, it's more than listenable. A few tracks have some audible distortion that can be a bit distracting. But thankfully, the bottom end is full and deep, the bass and drums really kick.
This album is one of those reminders of how good life can be. Fans of funk, r&b, and soul shouldn't even think twice about snagging this one.
This is the stuff of funkiness..........2000-12-25
This is really very good. I mean that with a pained funky look on my face that says so much more than words ever could. There is more on here than on any compilation of breaks, beats, or whatever. Get this.

Customer Reviews:
jazzman.......2006-11-09
Yea, baby this is the real stuff. Bless you Soul Brother
Records for re-issuing these long lost masterpieces on cd.
Dr. Eddie Henderson (he's a psychiatrist) is a BAAAAAAD
horn player. [...]. Most of
the Mwandishi band is here (minus Julian Priester on trom-
bone) along with Pat Gleeson twirling his electronic
knobs. It all meshes so well. So timeless and so forever,
it could have been recorded yesterday. Brilliant music
for open minds and ears. Pure perfection. You go Doc.
A Masterpiece On CD At Last!.......2005-10-11
Realization is one of the most important works from the fusion era, grand in scope and vision, and flawlessly executed. More melodic and ethereal than Miles Davis at his best, Eddie Henderson's Realization has a spiritual center that the Prince of Darkness never achieved (though he came close in Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way). The backup band, essentially the Herbie Hancock band at the time, goes off the charts, and Henderson is ahead of them all the way. Arguably the most beautiful jazz album recorded. Also worth buying is Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings. Same band. Same sound. Same quality.
Fusion-era electric jazz doesn't get any better than this!.......2005-03-13
Because the two albums that are reissued here -- combined in their entirety onto one CD -- have been out-of-print for so long, REALIZATION and INSIDE OUT are relative unknowns in comparison to the most acclaimed fusion-jazz era CDs by the likes Of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, and others. Yet after several listens to this collection I'm seriously pondering if trumpeter Eddie Henderson may have done the best job of them all in highlighting the strengths and creativity of the fusion era while avoiding its weaknesses and excesses. At the very least the albums collected here should be counted alongside the best 1970s efforts by those other artists I mentioned. It's great to have this music finally available in CD format.
Much of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band -- including HH himself on keyboards -- are in on these sessions. Yet given that Henderson wrote most of the tunes and has his own distinct ideas on how to focus the diverse textures that comprise this electric-meets-acoustic jazz approach, it would be unfair to look at these cuts as Hancock sessions issued under Henderson's name (as sometimes might be the case due for contractual or other reasons). As for the music, you get consistently brilliant playing by Henderson, equally strong statements by reedman Bennie Maupin, Hancock, and others, timeless instrumental textures (where you might find a combination of acoustic bass, fender rhodes, and synth washes blending seamlessly together), and a bold mix of funk and straight-up jazz rhythms. Despite all that is going on, there is a uncluttered sense of wide-open space on these tracks. Also, while the musicians are in a progressive frame of mind, the results should be easy-to-grasp for anyone who doesn't have an anti-electric jazz bias.
Absolutely fantastic.......2003-03-21
This is a brilliant CD. You'll think you have died and gone to heaven. If you love electric era Miles or Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band you'll love this. (Actually this is the Mwandishi band!)

Album Description
One of Joe Bataan's most fantastic Latin Soul albums from the late 60's! The record features a great variety of cuts that run the gamut from hard-hitting Latin groovers, to the kind of sweet and tender soul ballads that made Joe a legend with the crossover harmony crowd. Nearly every track is fantastic - from the hard-jamming descarga-boogaloo cut 'It's a Good Feeling (Riot)', to the sad soul ballad sound of 'What Good is a Castle' and 'Daddy's Coming Home', to the sweet 'My Cloud' and 'Ordinary Guy', or the classic Latin jazz of 'Mambo de Bataan'. Wonderful! Vampi Soul. Digipak. 2002.

Groundbreaking effort...............2002-03-12
When I first heard this recording in 1977, I was mining the obscure Jazz labels for hidden treasures, and this jazzy funk/ groove item appeared , released by the Chiaroscuro label.
At the time, even as I kept the LP all these years, I thought it had the same "unfinished" quality I believe the 2 Shuggie Otis lps had, as if the record company didnt want to spend too much money on the musical "vision" of Mr Mason .
FUNNY FUNNY how things work, almost 25 yrs later, the minimalist approach to jazz and funk/soul as defined by the "acid jazz / new grooves" designation suddenly propels James Mason into the "visionary' category- he was doing these things back in the late 70's, as were Roy Ayers, Norman Connors, Lonnie Liston Smith, etc etc...... ( "these things" being Vamps and so -called "killer grooves" that take presidence over fully realized compositions. Sampling seems to me a major issue, it seems with many new fans for the evolution of this style ...)
NO SAMPLES HERE, just some like minded musicians puttin down a heavy vibe and playing "off of" one another, "interacting" instead of "interactive", if ya catch mah drift.........
JM proved a tough groover, adept at electric keyboards, funky guitar comping, and a "lead guitar" style very much in the 70's jazz/fusion mode.
A crack band, featuring the impeccable drums of Michael Walden, and the etherial vocals of Clarice Taylor, (with some guest spots by Philip Woo *piano* and Justo Almario's saxwork)--the session percolates with some firey grooves which meet with some nice modal progressions/ chord voicings that sound far more soulful than much of the sampled fare, you "FEEL" the musics pour from the musicians , pure magic!
"Sweet Power..." I believe is a dancehall hit now, and "Good Thing" , "Slick City", the lovely contemplative lyrics of "Dreams", I cant mention now each selection, but the cd runs track to track with pulsations& gesticulations , although the grooves can get a bit frantic on a few cuts.(the 70's were a hectic decade, hehehehe!)
Some of the tunes just "die out" at the end as if not the final take,"unfinished" as i said before is the impression i have. ---- but HEY, cant have everything, can you?
What has become of James Mason, I think I will take a look , meanwhile , take a "look/listen" to this cd.
