Last year, the dark house and relentless pace of John Digweed's Hong Kong Global Underground mix was a shock to even electronic music's surreal, cannibalistic consciousness. Digweed has never been a glow-stick-waving Goa hippie by any means, but Hong Kong was a nuclear winter of subterranean rhythms, bouncing off the moldy walls and testing once again techno's shaky, constantly evolving genre definitions. It had suddenly become crystal clear that Detroit-style industrialism has finally and completely mind-melded with trance. So it's not surprising, then, that his latest, Los Angeles, continues along that same cold, brawny vein. Still, you might suspect a Digweed recording from the City of Angels would be a glitzier affair. But L.A. has always had a sinister edge, an almost apocalyptic feeling that the whole city could crumble at any minute under the weight of broken dreams and loveless ambitions. Digweed latches onto that vibe right off on the first disc, spinning "Love in Traffic" from noted producer-DJ Satoshi Tomiie. In Digweed's hands, the track grinds itself against your ears with a detached, dirty passion, indulging in a slowly burning build. From there, he taps ever deeper into the filthy heart of primal dance music, coalescing his mix around scrappy, metallic cross-rhythms, shadowy bass lines, and cruel, selfish beats. His work on the second disc is even sexier, as Digweed takes advantage of what's come before to flex his muscular ears and turn up the juice on what at this point must be a sweaty mess of makeup, silicone, and six-pack abs. It's almost vicious, the timing this man has in dropping down a needle on irresistible records like "The Fall" by Way Out West, but we must accept his glorious brutality, gather up the sad remnants of our self-respect, and make our way home in the soft morning light. Saturday night happens 52 times a year, after all. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Blazingly good.......2007-06-05

This is one of the releases that made Digweed as prolific as he is today. Stupendously good; masterfully done.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Dark Mix.......2006-11-05

When I started to buy mixes I read the review for this and was turned off from buying it originally. I decided to download it first and after I listened to it a couple times, it really, really grew on me. I ran out and bought is soon after. I used to listen to a lot of trance (PvD, etc.) but my tastes it seems, have matured and this is now one of my favorite cds. Highly recommended for fans of "dark, trippy, progressive house".

3 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective of the City Of Angels.......2006-03-01

Digweed, with GU019, has shifted his style to trance and deep house breaks that, like Dom Phillips said, crackles over rhythmic urban landscape. Some tracks (Apollo Vibes, Mine To Give) sound like IDM, whilst others (Penetration, Love In Traffic, Genesis) have many hard house breaks (although the former two tracks were performed by hard house god Satoshi Tomiie, and the later by the more trance-veering Cass)

I would say that this has a harder edge than the other California GU soundtrack (GU009/GU003 Sasha:San Francisco) but it cuts well. My suggestion: the cd should've been mixed with Der Dritte Raum or Junkie XL instead of Brothers Love Dubs (no offense, but 1-800 MING just doesn't fit the LA picture for me)

Oh well...enjoy!

P.S. this is my 1st GU release that I own!

5 out of 5 stars Dark clunky well mixed house.......2004-12-17

This Gu set is by far the most different of any of the Gu sets out, and I'm including all of them up to #26. I had this for a couple of years, and I really could not stand it. Every time i heard it there was nothing that stood out and it really doesn't have much of any tune involved through both discs. Now, when I moved to the UK, I had not much else to do for a couple of months but listen to my old cds. I have quite a few good techno mixes including most of the Gu series. I popped this one in the cd player in september, and as I had before, absolutely hated it. After listening to mixes for months I was getting bored. I realistened to this one and found myself amazed. I really have an ear now for techno and the progression that is involved. This album is very dark, never leading up to some climatic enterprise. Which fits it perfectly. All the way through disc one it is nasty dark house with the monotone rythm, but that doesn't mean it's not progressive or boring, it's far from that. All the songs are great and moody actually more like muddy then they lead up to "mine to give" which has a nasty dark bass. Then ends with great songs. Some of it is a bit repetive, and you may have to be in a bit of a dark mood to listen. Disc 2 is all the better.. Dark clunky beats all with dark twists as well as the first disc. Did i mention it was dark ? Not only do the tracks on this album flow all perfectly well together, but they are brilliantly put together. the mixing of the tracks together gives off a bit of a perfect live mixing affect. No mistakes there. In my oppinion, the is the best Gu out. I don't think it can be topped off. It's house that just moves through, and it's a great break from the other side of techno.. I wish that Digweed would put more stuff out like this here. If you do purchase this album, please give it time and listen to it through and through, it's one that grows on you and you may not like it at first listen.

5 out of 5 stars Digweed strikes again!!!!.......2004-11-10

When i first popped this CD in my speaker system and heard that first sound from "Apollo Vibes" i knew i was in for a journey.

These CDs glide through some of the best song selection for a set i have ever seen. The mixing of this album teases me so much i get the chills with what he has done on this CD. With most progressive albums they build up and keep the last couple mixes for huge club tracks. Digweed's mixing and track choice just builds and builds almost in a straight line. I just love how he raises energy levels almost like im floating to heaven without coming back down.

For those of you who know Digweeds style this CD perfectly displays his distictive mixing with the previous GU deposits of Hong Kong and Sydney. This CD however is MUCH DARKER than any Global Underground ive heard so far.

I suggest waiting for a couple hours of free time and listen to the CD's back to back on a rocking system. The basslines will kill you along with the 2-3minute mixing for most tracks.

Some parts of CD1 that stick out are the mix into "Groove Is in the Air", and when Digweed brings back "1-800-MING" after it has spun down.

CD2 highlights include the mix into the mid-CD breakdown of "The Fall", and tracks 9-11.

5 out of 5 stars Of all My Global Underground CD's this is my favorite........2006-09-19

I guess I have about 12 of the Global Underground series now with a good smattering of different DJ's. Of all of them this one has managed to stay in my changer longest. Many of the other GU CD's had one great CD and one so-so CD in each set, but not this one. Each time I decide to play this again, which is fairly often, the hardest decision is which CD to start with. With literaly several hundred Trance/Chill/House CD's in my growing collection this is surely up somewhere in the top 20 I'd guess, simply because after so many repeated playings it still sounds fresh and unique. Well worth the effort I went to to find it, as more and more good CD's seem harder and harder to find lately. This is one CD you wont regret buying. Hope this helped some of you.
Michael

5 out of 5 stars Reverberating Deep Fear-invoking Movement.......2002-05-09

If you like electronic music that will scare you as much as it will make you move, if you like music that feels like a gravity-well has suddenly switched on and your are being pulled into it almost against your will, then you MUST buy this album. It's because of compliations like this one that I even got into electronic music in the first place. It's deep, dark, frightening, consuming, and fulfilling stuff that I highly recommend to you if you like that sort of thing.

You know when you are listening to an album and it's letting you view the pastures from a hilltop and then the beat kicks in and you are riding over the undulating terrain and then the bass throbs and you are sucked down into a nightmarish landscape that is as alluring and controlling as a siren's addiction? That is what this mix is. It's so hard to find DJs that spin music like this across two CDs that I have wasted hundreds of dollars, please, if after listening to this album you have any recommendations for me, do e-mail me. If you liked this double CD set I highly recommend DJ Moda's Nokturnel Mix Session Release from Topaz. It invokes a similar set of emotions in me and I can't get enough of this stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Boldly GO: An earth-quake in the Trance/Techno Landscape.......2001-03-07

John Digweed seems determined to avoid the "Crash and Burn" fate suffered by some of his contemporaries. Global Underground seems to be in search of a rejuvenation. After a few flops and high profile disasters, the producers at Global Underground need something to keep customres from abandoning the brand. After Dave Seaman's disastrous "CapeTown" CD, and Nick Warren's disappointing sets, they've brought back John Digweed to re-create the magic--and in Los Angeles, the city known for making dreams come true (even if it is often through the mechanism of fanrasy).

Paul Oakenfold self-destructed with "Perfecto:Another World", an incoherent hodgepodge of unrelated music that was as undanceable as it was unlistenable. Nick Warren's recent sets have received only lukewarm reception, and while Sasha's recent "San Francisco" set had its moments, it hasn't sold outside of the hard core of DJ fanatics. So, there's a lot riding on the new Digweed set, in terms of hopes, expectations, and the future commerical prospects for the 'Global Underground' series.

John Digweed stays "on top" by never standing still. This latest Global underground release is a very daring departure from much of Digweed's previous work, and from much of what is being released as "DJ compilations". Unlike some CD series, which ave a really "queeny" or "flaming Disco" sound, this one is deep, and dark. It fits the mood of great trance extremely well; spacey without being empty, intense withot being 'in your face', and [this is LA after all], laid back but always to a powerful and relentless beat.

Some of the tracks here are densely layered, and have a hard, edgy trance feel (which is what draws your attention--it is so different from the usual dance fare): it's almost "Down Beat"; dense and full of low-mid frequencies, and nto equalized with lots of mid-high frequency boost. The relsult is a surprisingly listenable and danceable mix, although dancing may require you to really crank the volume to fully appreciate the effect.

Disk #1 is the darker, slower disc. It never goes above 130bpm, but like the LA traffic, it only seems slow until you're caught up in it. Another chance Digweed takes is the inclusion of vocal tracks, and while I hope he never does an entire CD of vocal cuts, 'Love in Traffic' is perfectly segued, and it feels totally appropriate for a mix created in Los Angeles.

Disk #2 is an absolute masterpiece. The mode is more intense, and the pace is a bit faster. The songs are more sensous (a lot like the Sasha/Digweed 'Communicate' CD, and the best of Digweed's own "Hong Kong Global Underground" CD from 2000).

So, bottom line: This is a very adventurous CD, where Digweed is taking some major chances with his selection of rhythms, more ambient sound, and a deep throbbing bassy mix. Unlike most "bass & drum" sets, though, this doesn't have the "boom box" sound & feel. It's deep, cerebral, and [especially on Disk #2] exhilarating. Disk One is like great Foreplay, and Disk Two is like a night of new sexual experiences (the kind you want again).

Best Cuts: Love In Traffic, Groove Is In The Air, Strapped, The Fall, Genesis, One
