5 out of 5 stars "Pretty World".......2006-06-28

Sergio Mendes 40th Anniversary concert at the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday, June 25, 2006 was a blast! To put a few words in a capsule that would describe that memorable evening, here goes . . .

Full-packed venue.
Tickets sold out.
Wonderful, alive and responsive audience.
Great performances of Sergio Mendes and his guests.
A night to remember.

It was a very memorable concert for I have met in person a musical legend while he was signing my CD booklets I brought with me. He's such an exceptional pianist, composer and a Bossa Nova icon as well. I've followed his musical career since Day One spanning four decades and have collected a good number of his most notable recordings of all-time. To me, the best part of the concert was the appearances of the equally talented husband and wife team of trumpeter, Herb Alpert, and the original Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 vocalist, Lani Hall. To the delight of the audience, they did a medley of my all-time favorites from this impressive collection "The Look of Love" (my friend and I as well as the audience were singing along) and "Fool On The Hill." Ditto with the performance by Joe Pizzulo of one of his hit songs "Never Gonna Let You Go." On this performance the audience started waving their cell phones (some with small flashlights) and you could see the lights illuminated from the phones - it was a beautiful sight - it's almost like seeing sparkling beads all over the place. The performances on "Mas Que Nada" and my very favorite song "Pretty World" were so nice, these are two of the seventeen tracks from this timeless and classic collection.

"Why don't we take a little piece of summer sky
Hang it on a tree
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For you and for me

And for the sun we'll take a lemon bright balloon
You can hold the string
Oh can't you see that little world of ours will be
The prettiest thing

We can gather rain enough for the stream
To hold our happy faces
When we want a breeze, I'll blow you a kiss or two
Take me in your arms and our little world
Will be the place of places
Nothing left to make but breakfast and love

We'll hang a little sign that says,
'Paradise: Population Two'
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For me and for you
For you, it's what I wanted to do, to do
To make a world..... with you."

Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 "Classics, Volume 18" is an absolute representation of typical Sergio Mendes music from the initial track "Mas Que Nada" to the final cut, "Alibis."

This is the kind of music you have enjoyed yesterday and will enjoy today, tomorrow and forever.

Timeless music.

4 out of 5 stars This 1987 retrospective is badly in need of a facelift........2005-12-29

If you did not grow up in the 1960's you just might wonder why so many baby boomers continue to be fixated on the music of that decade. The Billboard charts were filled with so many new and exciting sounds. When one thinks of 60's music the British Invasion and Motown immediately come to mind. But there were a number of other sounds that made an impact in the 1960's as well. Sergio Mendes brought his unique blend of Brazilian, jazz and American pop styles to America for the first time in 1966. His music was an instant sensation.
Although Sergio Mendes himself did not sing, he was the pianist, arranger, producer and musical director of this unique group. Led by vocalist Lani Hall, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 would produce some of the most innovative sounds of the late 60's. "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-86" features many of the highlights of the groups outstanding work during this period as well as a pair of hits from a later incarnation of the act in the mid 1980's.
To me "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-`86" was always a very strange concoction. Issued as part of A&M Records 25th anniversary "Classics" series in 1987, I was never very pleased with the way this one was done. If you are looking for the great 60's hits like "The Look of Love", "Scarborough Fair" and "The Fool On The Hill" then you will find them all here. Also included is the groups amazing 1969 hit "Pretty World" which is perhaps my favorite Sergio Mendes tune from that era as well as the groups very first hit single in America "Mas Que Nada". While the group experienced a fair amount of success on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart during this period, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 were a fixture on adult contemporary radio stations throughout the late 60's and early 70's. The group also sold a ton of albums. In fact, their debut LP simply entitled "Sergio Mendes and Brasil `66" remained on Billboards album charts for an amazing 126 weeks! You will find a number of selections from these LP's on this disc including "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Like A Lover" and the lovely "So Many Stars". Also included are a couple of fine instrumentals.
In 1983, Sergio Mendes re-emerged on A & M records with a brand new cast of charactors. The soulful single "Never Gonna Let You Go" featuring the splendid lead vocals of Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller was one of the surprise hits of that year. Slightly more than a year later the wonderful pop single "Alibis" peaked at #29 on the Billboard pop chart. Both of these later singles are included on "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-'86" as well.
As I mentioned earlier I was never overly impressed with "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-86". The sound quality is OK but nothing more. The liner notes which were written some 19 years ago are dated and the packaging is drab. Of the 17 tracks in this collection I would question why 3 or 4 of them were included in the first place. Yet for all of these flaws this disc is still the best available Sergio Mendes collection released in the U.S. And that is too bad. In 1997, A&M's British unit released an updated 2 CD collection of Sergio Mendes. I am not particularly wild about that one either. Hopefully, Universal Records, who now controls the A&M catalogue in the U.S. will see fit to release an updated anthology of this remarkable act in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to Be Mesmerized .......2006-09-23

I was given this album by a friend. I'm not a connoisseur of international music, but I must say I was instantly captivated by this musical compilation. The songs have a catchy, relaxing quality to them.

5 out of 5 stars still love it after 15+ years.......2006-03-29

I bought the original about 15 years ago in cassette tape form
(yeah, I am getting older:). Even though I agree that Byrnes should have updated it with younger and more current artists, these classic songs still move me.

5 out of 5 stars This disc introduced me to Brazil.......2006-03-16

What a great CD. I have all of Byrnes Brazilian discs and wish he would issue more. He really captured what makes Brazilian music great with his first three discs in this series. Still, this one is really special. The fourth and fifth disc in this series are dedicated to the artist Tom Ze who is brilliant in his own weird way. This first disc makes you just want to dance all over your living room. I wish Byrne would release more. Of course I now have a lot of the cds by the original artists, but this is the one that hooked me. Buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Not a New CD.......2005-03-29

Why continue to recycle a CD that is now roughly sixteen years out of date? Yes, it is a great compilation, or, at least, it was in 1989, but times have changed. Maybe somebody should talk Byrne into updating this CD once again, as he did in 1999, with a new compilation or two or six. There are about a score of styles and literally dozens of artists in Brazil who deserve recognition for the music that they are making now. And it is somehow odd that while there is not exactly a shortage of Brazilian compilations out there, most of those efforts have a regretable tendency to recycle yesterday's headliners. How about a fresh compilation that includes such diverse artists as Djavan, Cibelle, Autoramas, Silvia Torres, Monica Salmaso, Carlinhos Brown, Vinicius Cantuaria, Helena, Trio Da Paz, Charlie Brown Jr, Rita Ribeiro, Fernanda Porto, Seu Jorge, and about, oh, fifty others. All are interesting artists making incredible music, and all are making that great music in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars one of my desert island CDs.......2004-10-12

I've owned this CD for over ten years and it remains one of my favorites. The Brazilian music featured here manages to be both instantly accessable and yet at the same time exotic and new, from the stripped-down funkiness of "Ponta de Lança Africano" to the majestic "Equatorial" to the melancholy harmonies on "Fio Maravilha." I suppose the reason for this is the fact that these artists grew up immersed in their rich musical traditions, but at the same time they were exposed to the music of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, James Brown, etc. I don't like most of what falls under the "world music" umbrella, but this collection really hits the spot for me.

Also worth mentioning are the excellent liner notes and bilingual lyrics. Honestly, my only complaint is that this CD inspired me to go out and look for more Brazilian music but I've been unable to find anything else that I loved as much as this.

    Album Description

"It is always refreshing to encounter a disc in which consideration has been given to providing a balanced and thought-provoking programme. This is the second installment in Christopher Hogwood's `Modern Classicists' series, and is built upon an eclectic group of Stravinsky's smaller-scale works, with substantial historically influenced interjections by Tippett and Britten. The result is in marked contrast to the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra's foray into the world of Stravinsky's miniatures (DG), in which the scattergun whole somehow falls short of the sum of the delightful parts. By separating the two Suites for small orchestra to form a frame, Hogwood heightens awareness of their individual features, throwing into relief the intervening works, with the vocal and small-scale items on the disc providing an intimate heart at its core...Emma Kirkby is predictably delectable, floating through the Pastorale and an ideally innocent Anne Truelove in the excerpt from The ! Rake's Progress, while the Basel Chamber Orchestra is heart-rending in the `Lament' from Tippett's Divertimento...by far the most satisfying disc as a self-contained programme." (**** rating!) Compiled by former Talking Head David Byrne and released in 1989, with liner notes and translations by Arto Lindsay, Beleza Tropical documents a New York hipster's first infatuation with the rich, deep, and varied spectrum of Brazilian popular music from the rebellious '70s. There are better Brazilian anthologies, but none so clearly assembled in order to counter the received opinion of Brazilian music as lightweight bachelor-pad fluff (although Milton Nascimento, with his beautiful high tenor, sometimes comes close). Caetano Veloso (whose magnificent "Terra" is itself worth the price of admission) and Gilberto Gil are remarkable lyricists whose music is influenced as much by the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of northern Brazil as by the Beatles. Jorge Ben contributes a pair of highfalutin yet funky soccer songs, Chico Buarque is at his most uncompromisingly poetic, and Nazare Pereira taps deep into Brazilian folklore. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Non-Experts.......2007-04-10

Back in the '80s when this came out, US pop stars like David Byrne and Paul Simon won great praise for discovering "world music." Of course, this was the height of arrogance because this music has been around forever, just not known to many in the US. This Brazilian sampler is certainly melodious, though some think it doesn't contain the best work of the great Brazilian artists featured. So what? If you don't know this music very well, this CD makes a fabulous introduction. The lilting rhythms and irresistible melodies will grab any ears on first hearing and not let go.

3 out of 5 stars Great Artists...Just Not Their Best Songs........2003-11-04

I was definitely a little dissapointed in this CD. I originally bought it because it had a lot of my favorite artists on it (Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, etc.), however this CD does not showcase these artists best songs or work.

    5 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2000-01-19

I've had this CD for nearly 10 years now, and I still love it. It is a great introduction to Brazilian music. Like many compilations featuring various artists, there is a wide variety of styles; some songs I don't like as much, while others are just incredible, and that's why it ranks as a five-star CD. I would rank the best songs on "Brazil Classics I: Beleza Tropical" with songs by the Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel. It's hard to describe-- the music is a little bit familiar and accessable to my American ears, and at the same time very different than anything I had heard before. I gave a copy as gift to a friend, and he loved it. Then he promptly went out and bought two copies to give as gifts to other friends. It's definitely the kind of CD you want to share with your friends and spread the word about. The liner notes are quite good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Almost worth replacing.......2000-01-08

I owned this CD until recently. Basically, I wore it out by playing certain cuts over, and over, and over ... mostly at grad school parties where friends would always ask "What's this! " About 70% of this material is as good as any music I've ever heard, Beatles included. It's the other 30% that grates. Such are the slings & arrows of any very good, challenging compilation by more than one artist. Continuity can be a problem. Worth owning once as a fine (and historically important) intro to Brasilian music, but not worth replacing. There's better musica brasileira to be had - once you know what you like. Therein lies the value of this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Why ONLY 5 stars?.......1999-12-01

This is one of the best compilations (not only of brazilian music, but of any kind) i've ever had the luck to listen to, even though i think it's not the best David Byrne's compilation (i think Samba is). It's great from beginning to end, it doesn't have a flaw, it offers you some of the best creations of some of the best MPB musicians of any time. This is a must (IMHO) not only for all the MPB fans (including myself) but all music fans out there, you can't go wrong with this. Thanx David Byrne for such compilation, and even more thanx to the musicians that in any way were part of the process of creating such marvelous music. thanx again!

      Album Description

"Hans Graf enjoys Dutilleux's confidence, and from this recording it's easy to see why. The detail is all here, but so is the control of long paragraphs - few recordings of the slow movement of the First Symphony have moved me as much as this one…the work is undoubtedly a masterpiece and the final resolution on to D flat major one of the great moments of 20th-century music." - GRAMOPHONE

The Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra has existed under several different names since it's founding in the city of Bordeaux in 1850. Conductor Hans Graf, a native of Austria and former student of the legendary Sergiu Celibidache, has worked with the Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra since 1993, serving as its principal conductor from 1998-2004. Born in 1916, Henri Dutilleux, a student and then a professor at the Paris Conservatory, has long been acknowledged as one of France's most important composers of the 20th century. Arte Nova is the only label ever to have recorded all the orchestral music of Henri Dutilleux, a project highly praised by reviewers worldwide.

      Album Description

"HOGWOOD'S CLASSICAL EDUCATION SHOWS IN THESE NICELY POINTED RECORDINGS:The third installment of Christopher Hogwood's `modern classicism' project puts some well-known Stravinsky in the context of two less familiar Italian compositions written at much the same time. The Pulcinella Suite is played with great rhythmic buoyancy, the comic Vivo and hectic finale done with exemplary panache. But Hogwood doesn't neglect warmth of expression, especially in the Gavotte with Two Variations, which often seems a bit dull in other performances...Neither Casella nor Malipiero are much heard these days, but the two works presented here have more than enough spirit to merit revival. True, Casella's Scarlattiana has retained little of the `decadence' that was once attributed to it: `decorous', or even `bland' would be more appropriate terms, though there is plenty of good-humoured fast music and a few neat contrapuntal turns to liven up its Scarlattian reworkings.

The five linked sections of Malipiero's Ricercari for 11 instruments manage more emotional depth, with some nice touches of pastoral melancholy to offset the neo-Stravinskian ebullience. Malipiero doesn't attempt to emulate Stravinsky's harmonic abrasiveness, but the piece is neatly designed and attractively scored. Hogwood and his accomplished team make a strong case for it - all the stronger for avoiding any hint of over-emphasis."-GRAMOPHONE

5 out of 5 stars Enticing Music from the "Back to Bach" Movement.......2007-04-18

The Gramophone reviewer quoted on this page has pretty much hit the nail on the head in the description of these neoclassical pieces and in Hogwood's delivery of them. Of the three works included here, the almost-unknown Malpiero's Ricercari is the most seriously intentioned. Also, surprisingly, given that Stravinsky just about singlehandedly invented musical modernism, the Ricercar is most modernist of the bunch.

Casella's little confection is the prettiest of the three, with some nice contributions from a busy percussion section, including piano. (And, given that Scarlatti wrote for the Spanish court, Casella rightly includes castinets in one section of his Scarlattiana.) It is also the most episodic, without the constructional glue that Stravinsky and Malpiero found to hold their works together. Ultimately, Scarlattiana is a bit vapid for all its attractiveness. You may not return to it as often as to the other pieces, but it is fun to hear nonetheless.

While you might already have Stravinsky's famous work in your collection, Hogwood's performance, with a fine contribution from tenor Anthony Spiri in the brief vocal numbers, is about as good as I've heard--lots of forward momentum, lots of color from the fine chamber orchestra. Also, the Arte Nova engineers provide a recording that is very present without being hard edged or overbearing; there is a nice sense of ambience as well.

So for an introduction to a forgotten composer who has something to say (Malpiero) or for a state-of-art performance of a lesser masterwork by a twentieth-century master (Stravinsky), this is an attractive package. Arte Nova's low price, as always, is a nice incentive to collectors as well. Enjoy.

      Album Description

The L'Arlésienne suite recorded here is extracted from the original theater orchestration of Bizet that exists in his own autograph score in Paris. All numbers are in their original keys, but the sequence has been revised for this presentation. Richard Strauss is rarely described as a neoclassical composer, but for Moliére's play he immersed himself in the style of the baroque, as well as studying the editions of Lully then available.

The Kammerorchester Basel (KOB) is one of the leading chamber orchestras of Europe and is in international demand. The KOB is an orchestra without a permanent conductor. The musicians themselves create the unique artistic profile of the orchestra by participating in the selection of conductors, soloists and repertoire. Christopher Hogwood, pioneer of historical performance practice, is the KOB's Principal Guest Conductor, and it was he who started the acclaimed recording project on Arte Nova a few years ago. Since founding the Academy of Ancient Music in 1973, Hogwood has gained international recognition for his performances of baroque and early classical repertoire with period instruments.

3 out of 5 stars Nicely done theatrical scores.......2005-04-24

I owned Hogwood's older recording of the Bizet "L'Arleisienne" suite coupled with two French symphonies and performed by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. I bought this one because I liked the other one and was seeking a modern recording of the Strauss incidental music.

Hogwood is a bit more sensitive with the Bizet this time around, aided by marginally more refined playing by the Basel Chamber Orchestra. Together, they play an extended suite of the music that accomapanied a drama with more subtlety and sensitivity to the changing moods of the score than in Hogwood's first recording.

I enjoy this music more than the Strauss occasional music that is akin to film music and never approaches the profundity of any other Strass score. You won't find any of Strauss's philosophical pondering in this little suite, but you will find some delicacies hidden inside that are nicely done.

Hogwood and the Basel players do all they can with this music, recreating the environment that may have existed when the music accompanied a stage play. The final section of the Strauss suite, "The dinner", is the lengthiest section at 9:52.

The players do everything they can to breathe sensitivity and life in this theater music in what must be the first of at least two installments of similar music. Hogwood is his zestful self, attacking the music with gusto and joie de vive where called for. Only this time, he approaches with a gentler attack in the quieter, more pensive and introspective moments.

The sound on this 2004 recording is pretty good DDD. While there are shortcomings in this issue you don't pay much for them. At a list price of $6.98 you won't be out much even if you don't like anything herein.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best Introductory Compilation.......2002-08-29

Like the other reviewers, this was pretty much my introduction to Brazilian popular music. The Jorge Ben video was also on fairly regular rotation on Black Entertainment Television in the late 80's and early 90's. What ever happened to their world music shows......

But I digress. Obviously all the reviewers of this record highly recommend it, and I'm no exception. The music is absolutely awesome, and the information (including translations) inside the jacket is priceless. You can also find more stuff on Luakabop.com

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Collection of Brazilian Excellence!.......2002-05-31

Every track on this album is a killer! This was the first Brazilian CD I bought and although my collection of Latin music has grown substantially, I still turn to it when all else fails. It's a great introduction to the genre and by far the most comprehensive compilation of Brazilian Pop/Rock/folk music I've ever heard.

Like many countries that have had to put up with hard-line political regimes, music has always been an outlet to vent social & political frustrations, document life and present hope even in the darkest hours. The lightness of much Brazilian pop is often confused for music without guts. It is hard to imagine the music presented here as being in any way dangerous, but the military regime that controlled Brazil during the late '60s and early '70s found it very subversive. So much so that the artists Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil were exiled and lived in London for several years. The sleeve notes document all of this extremely well and present the lyrics to each track in the original Portuguese as well as the English translation. There is also a list of the original albums this compilation was derived from, many of which are well worth seeking out (Milton Nascimento's "Clube Da Esquina" being a prime example).

Most of the music on this CD is from the 70's. It's funk, acoustic, guitar, harmonic, vocal, melodic brilliance. Many of 'thee' Brazilian musical exponents are represented here (Jorge Ben, Maria Bethany, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso etc.). There's even a track about football: Jorge Ben's "Umbabarauma" (which has been sampled by Fila Brazillia on the track "Pots and Pans"). It's obvious that this is just the tip of the Brazilian iceberg and it would be hard for a single CD to cover all the aspects & diversity present in Brazilian music. So if you want get started I'd buy this CD, I guarantee that after hearing it you will crave for MORE! (The good news is that Luaka Bop's releases are already in double figures.)...

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection.......2002-05-24

Let me start by saying that I know nothing about Brazilian music. I used to think it all sounded like "Girl from Ipanema." This CD gloriously proves otherwise. While no one collection can capture the breadth of a country's musical culture, this one does a good job of at least illustrating variety in Brazilian music. And the songs are great. There are songs in this collection that make you want to learn Portuguese just so you can appreciate them more. Heck, I've sung along with a few of the cuts without even knowing what I was singing (I do a mean Milton Nasciamento falsetto). It's simply a great, great CD. I don't know how representative of Brazil these selections are, and, to be honest, I don't really care. I just love the music. It's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Dream of mine.......2002-03-19

I don't know if it's the soccer player in me, or the fact that I'm half-Portuguese and it's in my blood, but I took to this album instantly and I never have tired of listening to it, in 6 years. Great rhythms and enchanting voices, this is just one entertaining disc to have, and a great primer for anybody interested in Brazilian music. It also offers a lot of insight into the sociopolitical climates of the times from when these songs were released, and the translations and history included in the CD jacket are much appreciated, and enhance the listening experience all that much more. A truly great collection of music that I have every confidence in recommending to you if you want something different that has a great dance beat and I dare you to sit still in your chair while you listen. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Original and the best.......2001-12-05

This album put the Luaka Bop label on the map for many people, and in many ways it is still an example of their best work. This compilation contains some of the best south american music I have heard, even though the tracks now date back several decades. If you are looking to get your feet wet with a Luaka Bop title this is the one for you.

        Album Description

"Christopher Hogwood leads near ideal performances…and they respond well to his crisp, period-instrument-influenced approach…wholly recommendable." - CLASSICSTODAY [on Vol. 1]

In June 1942, Erick Hawkins, the first man to join Martha Graham's dance company, approached Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, the great Maecenas of contemporary chamber music, with the idea of commissioning a score from Aaron Copland for Graham. More than two years later, after many postponements, Appalachian Spring was first performed at the Library of Congress on October 30, 1944. Copland was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his score the following year, and the Orchestral Suite from the Ballet has become one of the most popular classics of American music. Listeners familiar with the Suite will be surprised to hear the sonorities and additional music from the original 13-instrument version. Copland originally entitled his work Ballet for Martha. Graham found her title Appalachian Spring in a poem by Hart Crane. Copland wrote Music for the Theatre during the summer of 1925, the very first work commissioned by the newly founded League of Composers. Its score is permeated with the spirit of jazz. Samuel Barber's Capricorn Concerto was premiered in New York on October 8, 1944. It is designed like a Baroque Concerto Grosso, with the same instrumentation as Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto. The Kammerorchester Basel (KOB) is one of the leading chamber orchestras of Europe in international demand. The KOB is an orchestra without a permanent conductor. The musicians themselves create the unique artistic profile of the orchestra by participating in the selection of conductors, soloists and repertoire. Christopher Hogwood, pioneer of historical performance practice, is the KOB's Principal Guest Conductor, and it was he who started this acclaimed recording project on Arte Nova a few years ago. Since founding The Academy of Ancient Music in 1973, Hogwood has gained international recognition for his performances of baroque and early classical repertoire with period instruments. For more than 40 years, he has also been performing music of the twentieth century, with a particular affinity for the neobaroque and neoclassical schools including many works by Stravinsky, Martinù and others.
