More of the same if you like space music.......2007-07-11
Space music is never going to break any new ground; it is what it is and that's why people buy it. Serrie is one of the best at this genre. I don't know why you would need more than 2-3 space music albums but this one will do.
FANTASTIC!.......2005-10-22
I never knew one could purchase such great music. I first bought this as a cassette and then the cd. It is the BEST cd I own. Whenever I listen to it I feel like I am in the ocean, not space. All the songs just fit perfectly with sea creatures swimming by and bubbles going up. Just great to go to sleep by.
awesome cd.......2005-04-25
This music makes for great headphone listening...for falling asleep peacefully to meditation. Highly recommended!
GREAT CD.......2004-12-01
This CD is really amazing. If you like floating space music that is very relaxing, you'll love this CD. I bought this CD years ago and I never get tired of hearing it. I like to put it on and fall asleep listening to this incredible music. It's so peaceful and relaxing. It reminds me of my space music CD, "Scenes From a Nightmare" which I recorded back in 2002. Although, my music is a bit darker and a tad bit scary. But I like all types of spacey, floating music. "And The Stars Go With You" is one of the best I've heard.
A classic.......2004-07-20
Jonn Serrie had already been composing music for planetarium shows for years, but the decision to begin recording albums changed his career. And The Stars Go With You was his first, originally released back in 1987, and it revolutionized the 'space music' trend and skyrocketed Serrie into ENA superstardom (that is, if he hadn't done so already). Now the album has only been made better with the addition of "And With You 2," a track that was obviously left off of the original printing, but is now, in my opinion, one of the best songs.
Serrie's is music you can just put on, lay back, and relax to. Let your mind go blank and get lost in the soundscapes. Play it all alone on a quiet night to get in the mood. Let moments like the gentle percussion on the second half of the titled track or the harmonies of songs like "And With You 2" and "Stratos" carry you away.
Some of the songs even sound like two or three-act musical dramas. Take "Fantasy Passages" for example. When this track begins, you can imagine yourself floating around lost helplessly in the darkest areas of space. When the music is occasionally broken up by deep, loud, rolling thunderous effects, after which the music slowly creeps back in, you can imagine falling into a black hole, then falling back out into the endless abyss (ok, I know it's not logical to fall out of a black hole, but you get the idea). Finally, as the song begins perhaps to lighten up a bit, with an echoing synth riff that repeats over and over again for the rest of the song, you can imagine your resolution - floating into the brighter areas of the universe, into places you know.
I guess I have nothing else to say except "just dream..." Put on this cd and let the stars go with you!

Good for what it is - soothing.......2007-07-03
Serrie began his professional life scoring the music for planetarium shows. Even though there is no music in space (without an atmosphere, sound can't exist - it's like thinking that you can have waves without water), the premise here is that this music gives you a sense of the expanse of the universe and the movement of the spheres. This is new age music. I like it in small doses - the whooshing synthesizers as they crescendo and decrescendo - all of this can be very relaxing. It doesn't stand up to close examination though. Better to have this for when you want to nap or nod off.
Very Soothing.......2007-01-10
This cd is definitely one of the best in the Space Music genre. I feel as though I am floating through space or admiring a view of the earth from the moon. I heartily recommend this cd for anyone who has trouble sleeping or who just wants to expand his/her mind.
Celestial Heaven.......2007-01-10
I enjoy New Age music that can take my soul for a journey through the stars. This is one of my favorite CDs for relaxing.
Elegant and Sublime.......2004-03-27
As a long time fan of Jonn Serrie, I am very happy that he has returned to his "roots" of cosmic space music after his brief sojourn into more "earthy" music that he did on Spirit Keeper, etc.
This premier artist of cosmic music that is used worldwide at Planetariums is reknown for his floating, ethereal music that allows one to dissolve into bliss as an instant fix for tension and stress particularly at the end of a teeth grinding day. On this CD, Jonn has created some of his most elegant and sublime music to date.
Favorites: #2 "Eye of the Beholder" is achingly gorgeous; #4 "Pan Galactic" is stunning and #5 "The Stars, like Dust" is like really being out there floating around the cosmos in an imaginary starship like Enterprise or Voyager. An amazing CD from an amazing artist who will always remain my #1 favorite of all time.
Finally!! Jonn's back to his 'Space' music!!.......2004-02-19
In the tradition of Planetary Chronicles and 'And The Stars Go With You' this CD lets you imagine a journey through space, etc. Yeah - this CD sounds a lot like Planetary Chronicles - SO WHAT? Planetary Chronicles I & II are some of the best work. I was a little put off when Serrie branched off into the tribal sounds of Spirit Keepers and all the lovey crap in Midsummers Century and Ixlandia. However, even those 2 CD's were pretty good. Don't listen to the other review about this CD not breaking any new ground and that this CD sounds like his others. It's SPACE MUSIC - how much NEW ground can you really break in this genre?? The music either sounds all spacey and junk or it doesn't. Bottom line if you LIKE Jonn Serrie's previous "space" music then you will LOVE this CD.

There have been many attempts at fusing Native flutes with synthesizer arrangements, but most of them fail because the synth sounds are pedestrian and stiff, or the flute playing is rudimentary. That's not the case with these two virtuosos. Gary Stroutsos brings the chops of jazz and Afro-Cuban playing to bear on a performance that nevertheless eschews technique in deference to nuance. Jonn Serrie, on the other hand, since 1987 has been articulating a lush, space-music sound on several albums that are noted for their richly textured sound design. Together, they carve out a contemplative zone of slow-motion space largos, touched by hints of Middle Eastern percussion. Serrie has been here before with his 1998 Native-inspired album, Spirit Keepers, but Stroutsos is a more gifted collaborator. His melodies weave from the curvaceous themes of Indian snake charmers on the title track to the more classically inclined refrain of "Earth Sky." The relentlessly slow pace of Hidden World can wear thin over the course of the album. Even the drama of field drums and cymbals and clay pot percussion barely breaks the surface of the album's doggedly contemplative mode. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Quite peaceful.......2001-02-09
I am certainly not the most knowledgeable of New Age listeners. I do think this album is worth listening to and I personally think John Serrie did a fine job in his synth-to-flute blending. In fact, the balance of both is very good. "Tuptim's Garden" is probably my favorite.
There are two or three tracks differing from the rest, but the change is not necessarily bad. Not the most consistent of New Age albums I've heard, but definately worth it if you're looking for quiet Native type of music.
I don't think this makes good meditation music if that's what you're looking for. As a matter of fact, I don't think any music should be heard when meditating.

Mystic echoes feed the soul.......2000-10-24
I love this CD! It has the earthy resonance of Native American melodies blended with other compositions that remind me of Enya's Celtic mysticism. I find it beautiful to listen to and spiritually satisfying, although it certainly can't be pigeon-holed as expressing strictly one style. Maybe that's why it appeals to me so much: an ethereal excursion touching several musical traditions, that relaxes the psyche and the body.
Boring-Boring-Boring-Boring.......2000-10-16
John Serrie is typical new age that tries various venues (native american) and puts out more new age fluffey music. All his CDs basically sound the same...no matter what the theme appears to be. So, if you buy one of his CDs, you basically have them all. There are a lot of seriously talented musicans that do this style of music much much better. Dont waste your money.
Hidden appeal.......2000-08-31
I am a die hard Serrie fan, but I am over his experimentation with the Native American theme. "Spirit Keepers" was enough for me, and although it was good (with time, since I don't listen to a great deal of Native American music), he didn't need to create a sister c.d., which is even weaker than "Spirit Keepers". All is not lost on this release, though. With Serrie, there will always be nice moments, such is on the first two and final two tracks. In between, it's mostly annoying, with Gary Stroutsos' flute playing coupled with Jonn Serrie's minimal soundscape backdrop. This c.d. could easily get lost without much notice in the world of Native American music, except that Jonn Serrie has gained a very good reputation for premium space music. For this reason, it will be exposed to a wider audience, some of whom will likely be less than impressed. Hopefully, Jonn Serrie has exited this trendy genre of music and has started projects in other directions.

Music For The Ear, Food For The Imagination.......2001-12-31
I have 4 of Mr. Serrie's albums, and this one, because of one song, is absolutely the favorite in my collection...
...Starmoods. I'm listening to it right now, and every time I hear it it conjures up images of endless skies, drifting clouds, and an impending sunset. It is a song of great beauty, or one of sadness, depending on your mood and experience.
It is serene and dream-inspiring-and what Mr. Serrie said in the liner notes for this album is something I discovered myself-there are subtle nuances in this piece that aren't obvious on first listen. I have owned this CD for a couple of years and I am always discovering a new gem hidden in the lush potpourri of sound...listen carefully and you'll hear it. I am constantly amazed at how much emotion electronic music can inspire-I am consistently moved to tears by this piece simply because of the intense feelings it evokes.
If you are looking for an album with up-front melodies and obvious tonal patterns, you will not find them here.
But, if you're looking for the perfect soundtrack to your dreams, music to inspire your own creativity, or sounds to merely relax by, this cd is a winner. (It's also perfect to listen to on airplane trips...this kind of music lends itself to being listened to amongst the clouds)
But, if you're crying at the end of track four, don't say I didn't warn you!
Good collection..........2001-10-12
This disc is worth adding to your collection if you are a Serrie fan. The track 'Starmoods' is worth the price of the disc alone, space music at it's best.
Way out there..........2000-08-07
In general terms, ambient music tends to fall into two distinct categories: "hip" ambient, composed by the likes of Pete Namlook, Terre Thaemlitz, Bill Laswell and the like and then the not so hip; Jarre, TD(these days)and others whose music tends to appeal to an older age group.
Serrie is lumped in there as someone for the 30/40 something crystal-type new-agers and I think this lack of respect from today's ambient music fans stems from a rather poor piece of imagemaking on behalf of Miramar. The packaging for Serrie's albums are dated in the extreme and the "friendly maestro" photos on the back do no justice. HOWEVER; the music is absolutely top-notch.
I'm continually in search of drifting atmospherics (early TD is my music of preference) and while I was initially put off Serrie for all the above reasons, once I heard his music I was hooked.
The music here isn't as dark as say, "Rubycon" or "Phaedra" nor as minimalist as Laswell's "Web", but if you took those two albums, threw in a healthy dose of Vangelis, you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about.
There are no surprises here. "Mystery Road" is a beauiful piece, drifting spacially through the mind, gently falling into the brassy intro to "Dawn Trader"... from there the track names cease to matter and the silence between them is barely noticeable. I like albums that flow from piece to piece and Serrie does it beautifully.
It may seem like old hippy space music (and it is)! but it stands the test of time never becoming twee or trite, but retains minor key mystery throughout.
Space Master.......2000-04-11
This cd delivers you to the edge of the universe and back! Finally I found true ET music! I play this cd at night and drift off to sleep. Very soothing. I'm one of those intense people who has a hard time unwinding and getting to sleep. This cd is definately worth adding to your collection.I can't wait to order some of john's Serrie's other cd's!
Music ahead of its time.......1999-09-15
Do yourself a favor and look at the DATES of which these scores were made. You will be surprised as to how old this music is - yet it still is awesome planetarium music. Don't listen to the nay-sayer who complains that they don't feel like they are in 'outerspace.' It's only music for pete's sake.

Synthesist Jonn Serrie has always traversed a spectrum between deep space excursions and sentimental pop melodies. He charts a similar course on Lumia Nights, creating ambient lounge music full of breathy synthesizer pads and cocktail-bar-at-midnight moods. He even covers the jazz standard, "Autumn Leaves" to cloyingly bad effect. Just think Lawrence Welk plugged in. The lounge rhythms are offered up with none of the irony you might find in electronica artists such as Thievery Corporation or Loop Guru, whose grooves call up an iconography that's twisted on its head. It's not until "Deep Mystery" that Serrie floats off into the night sky with shimmering synthesizer textures that recall some of his Planetary Chronicles recordings, but even here, the synthesist goes for melodies that exhibit more saccharine than soul. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
best of space music!!!.......2007-05-24
Can't get enough of it. I am planning to listen to it in this summer while gazing stars outside:-)
Contemporary, Futuristic, Essential.......2007-01-20
One of the pleasures of an educated listener is to be able to follow the journey and growing of talented composers like John Serrie. Serrie, whose talents were graciously recognized and utilized by CNN and Steven Spielberg, shows his maturity and sophistication on "Lumia Nights," elegant in both title and melody. Surpassing even "Planetary Chronicles II" and "Ixlandia," Serrie truly takes the listener on a journey far away from the troubles of this world with the full range of his electronic and ambient talent, beginning with the title track that impacts the listener like a ship taking off for a celestial journey. "Lovers in Motion," "Tide Pools" and "Autumn Leaves" continue past earth, making the listener truly feel like he or she is in the 21st century, far from the petty cares of this world.
Serrie has definitely evolved into one of the premier space music artists of our time. Not like the twinkly-winkly 'new age' music of the 1980's that never really got off the ground, "Lumia Nights" is a shining jewel in a music lover's sophisticated collection. Filled with pleasant melodic echoes that instill the vastness of space against a starry backdrop, Serrie shows his qualities without "too many notes" or the lackluster effect of the novice who has no layering to his compositions. On the contrary, Serrie blends beautiful reverbial harmonies with smooth, even flowing tempos, ereatheral pings that almost make you feel you're on 10 Forward admiring the stars, nebulae and other celestial beauties--just a little closer to heaven. There's nothing corny or overrated here. Contemporary, Futuristic and Essential, it is worth repeating a thousand times. Serrie's work is sure never to grow old, ageless and timeless. Perfectly appropriate for listening while reading, relaxing, love making or as a cure for insomnia, "Lumia Nights" is a must have for the intelligent, mature listener.
A Must For Space Fans Everywhere!.......2007-01-10
I very strongly recommend this cd for space music fans everywhere. I use it when I need to relax, for sleep, or meditation. It helps me get in touch with the inner self.
Celestial Heaven.......2007-01-10
I enjoy New Age music that can take my soul for a journey through the stars. This is one of my favorite CDs for relaxing.
Serrie's best since he put out "Spirit Keepers".......2006-07-06
Seldom have I run across a "mood" album which so completely captures the rhythms of the evening. A newcomer to the genre might mark this as typical 'easy listening', but it is not. This is Space Music Serrie at his best, cut loose on a sensual, somewhat titlating journey through the activities of night: rest, relaxation, romance, and sex.
Listening to this album is like going on an aural date with your one and only: a high-dress night on the town, superb dining, slow dancing, the eventual midnight drive home through gentle summer air while the stars illuminate your way, to be capped by scenes of slow, hungry passion in the jacuzzi, shower, or between the sheets.
My wife is not overly fond of space music, but on this album we're agreed, Serrie has truly captured the feeling of the complete couples' evening. Smooth, flowing, with a depth of bass that perfectly underscores the higher melodies. A remarkably undersold gem of an album which I very much recommend, whether you need some background ambience to set the tone, or a bona fide space trip of the mind.

Space music is a cosmological odyssey in sound that expands your imagination and leaves it floating in an extended state of weightless wonder, and rarely is it more satisfying than when Jonn Serrie is at the controls. Serrie, an Atlanta-area composer who learned his mind-stretching craft while creating soundscapes for planetarium exhibitions, is acknowledged as one of the brightest stars in the space-music constellation, and if you have yet to experience any of his sound probes into deepest space, it's hard to imagine a better introductory package than Century Seasons. The two-disc compilation showcases Serrie's pre-2000 work, sampling 10 recordings and shrewdly focusing on the keyboardist's core intergalactic sound, largely overlooking Serrie's occasional flirtations with pop-influenced romanticism. Instead, the package opens with a blissfully slow drift of sound, "Gentle the Night," from Serrie's seminal debut disc, And the Stars Go with You, and sustains a state of nearly undisturbed peace for more than two hours. Such recordings make a person glad headphones were created. Outstanding. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
Space Music.......2007-05-13
What can I say? Everything that Jonn Serrie does is great stuff. Although my all time favorite of his is: "And the Stars Go With You." Jonn's music is very relaxing and very spacey. I love this stuff.
Great for observing.......2007-02-17
I love to listen to this music while I'm observing through the telescope. It is the perfect mood music for astronomy.
A superior Deep Space compilation.......2006-01-05
This cd is a compilation from previous
releases - releases which contained a mixture
of deep space music as well as some of Jonn's
more romanticly inclined music. Recognizing that
a large portion of his audience desired a purer
and more consistant release of his space music,
Serrie released Century Seasons.
If you don't have this double cd,it is truely worth
owning. Serrie is clearly among the very best
at what he does, and what he does rewards the ear
with every listening.
Other releases in this vein include:
Planetary Chronicles Vol. 1;
Planetary Chronicles Vol. 2;
And The Stars Go With You;
and his most recent: Stargazer's Journey
musical interpretation of most essential curiosity that transcends fear.......2005-09-13
This music captures the feeling of cosmos curiosity overriding career angst. Great background for heavy math and physics. Must listen under stars!
I remember losing my first job in aerospace while my ex girlfriend called me a wimp. A small child warned me not to see Alien or I wouldn't sleep that night. I went to check whether I could sleep after. I found my curiosity exceeded my terror in this movie.
Finding this curiosity exceeding terror has always been a powerful experience for me as my life in science continued. I believe it is my very center.
John Williams music, I can't do heavy science to; to Jonn Serrie, I can.
Great Space Music.......2005-07-08
John Serrie is my favorite space musician and I think this might be his best. Of course it is 2 cd's and a compilation but it does select excellent picks. I have all of his cd's and they are all the best. Some of his older music is difficult to find and might be why this cd came out. All of his music is hauntingly beautiful and spacey. If you only get one of his, this is a good choice. I can't get enough of him. Get them all and take a trip to outer and inner space. Peace and love to all hearts of space.

Space/ambient dreams........2006-04-21
I love Serrie's work - have been a fan since highschool. There is simply no better space/ambient music out there. I've used his cds in my yoga and pilates classes as well as a mental nightcap. If you have trouble sleeping, mediating, and/or winding down at the end of the day, Serrie may be your answer.
His work is surreal without being airy-fairy new-agey. It's dark and definitely more ambient. All the men I've introduced to Serrie's music love it.
Musings in Deep Space.......2006-01-05
There are already several reviews for
Jonn Serrie's various releases. The
Planetary Chronicles CDs offer Serrie's
sumptuous sense of deep space music and
is reckoned by many to be his strong
suite. Without being too 'dark' there
is a sense of adventure and just enough
of an edge to delight the ear upon repeated
listening. The fact that Jonn's work can be
listened to again and again is partly responsible
for the enduring fan base he has created for
himself.

One of Serrie's best!.......2006-04-21
This was the first CD I bought of Serrie's. It's a little lighter than his deep space work (Planetary Chronicles) but still ambient rather than typical new-age. Think alien planet as opposed to cruising in deep space.
Evocative.......2005-02-03
Before I purchased this CD I discovered it on an internet radio broadcast. There was a powerfully pastoral salience to Serrie's music that emerged above the other new age selections I was listening to that caused me to pause and go to my computer and see what was playing; each time I checked it was 'Midsummer Century.' I find 'Midsummer Century' more evocative of a deeper peacefulness than I found in recordings of similar genre.
This is not music, people.......2004-08-21
If you are looking for music, I advise listening to someone else. If you like listening to calculated noise, then this is more in line for you. Sorry, but this album and others by Mr. Serrie are just "stuff".
Simply hypnotic.......2000-04-14
The first four tracks are the exceptions to the remainer of the CD and are appealing to most anyone. Beginning with the fifth track, "Velvet" Jonn begins his spell casting as the music progressively becomes more free flowing, airy and subdued. (I personally think that there are some subliminal messages in these songs as it took me several attempts to stay awake to the end.) The surprise is that half way into the "Ancient of Days" a melody and percussion line emerges and after a moment drifts away. Each song smoothly flows into the next and lulls the listener into a deeper state of relaxation while not being totally space music, it is perhaps the musical representation of the last strands of our earth's atmosphere. Adding Jonn's "Tingri" makes this a nice set if you don't get anything else by him.
Full of Emotion.......1999-11-04
This is one of my favorite Jonn Serrie albums. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is written with tremendous emotion and a seeming longing for something unfulfilled. Only Jonn can make this kind of feeling come through a keyboard.

Synthesist John Serrie creates an enchanting electronic landscape of cosmic ambience under which the flute work of John Winter Hawk Johnson sings and soars. Serrie masterfully conjures the setting of a Native mystical universe while such guests as Tom Walks in Dreams Goodman and others chant and speak the languages of their ancestors. The effect is soothing and wondrous: shakers jangle in and out of swaths of synth while deep full accent drums beat on and timeless voices whisper across the starry sky. Though Native purists may find the programming of Serrie a little too precious, Serrie fans and those interested in ambient or space music will find spiritual solace in his expansive take on traditional Native American music. --Karen K. Customer Reviews:
Space Music goes Native! A superb blending of two bedrock New Age genres..........2002-07-19
First off, I'll be blunt. This is not a Native American album. This is a full-force Space Music album, with Native American themes. So if you expect the former, you probably will be disappointed. Me? I was very pleased with the results, and have listened to this album many, many, many times since I first discovered it will doing radio at KSVR-FM in Washington State.
"The Lovers" and "Grandfather Speaks" are especially enjoyable, evoking tremendous imagery and using Serrie's masterful synthesizer strokes combined with Native American spoken word, as well as critically-placed guitar notes and other, sometimes more eclectic instrumental punctuation.
In many ways this album dovetails nicely with Steve Roach & Roger King's forlorn "Dust to Dust", and I've enjoyed myself on lengthy drives through the Western United States playing this album and "Dust to Dust" interleaved. They each evoke the haunting and sometimes tragic spirits of the Old West, and I can seldom listen to one without immediately wanting to hear the other.
A Great Blend of What Jonn knows best &Native American Music.......2001-12-04
I've been a long time fan of Jonn's space music. This is a great blend of what he knows best and the blending of Native American music. If you meditate, this will take you to the realm of Native American spirituality.
Took a little time.......2000-08-19
I would have been more prepared for this c.d. if I had first gotten my expectations out of the way. "Wind Walker", the third track, was the only piece that immediately appealed to me with its rich, upbeat nature and keyboard dominant melody. Otherwise, I was extremely disappointed with the Native American themed c.d. at first. It wasn't until after several listenings that I was able to begin to appreciate the rest of the c.d. Now I am able to listen to the c.d for what it is without wishing for the "old" Jonn Serrie. Anyway, I'm sure the "old" Jonn Serrie will be back in due time.
The Best of His Best!.......2000-08-19
I first heard Jonn on a collection of Native American music. I had to buy this CD for the musical content. I was not disappointed by this or his other wonderful CD's.
If you can feel music in your soul and have it lift you, then this is for you. Jonn will give you strength and balance.
Meditate, soul search, or just listen to this fine CD and you will be sold on Jonn's deep routed talents.
Boring-Boring-Boring.......2000-01-17
I dont know if I should be drinking or getting stoned to keep up with the other reviewers but this CD is horrible...I have heard so many better artists that mix Native American.. I cant belive this CD, lucky for me I was able to return it.
