Sergio Mendes/Classics Vol.18.......2007-04-05
One of the finest compilations by the Sergio Mendes/Brazil 66 group available. All excellent selections including but not limited to: So Many Stars, Pretty World, and the signature classic Mais Que Nada.
This is a must have.
"Pretty World".......2006-06-28
Sergio Mendes 40th Anniversary concert at the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday, June 25, 2006 was a blast! To put a few words in a capsule that would describe that memorable evening, here goes . . .
Full-packed venue.
Tickets sold out.
Wonderful, alive and responsive audience.
Great performances of Sergio Mendes and his guests.
A night to remember.
It was a very memorable concert for I have met in person a musical legend while he was signing my CD booklets I brought with me. He's such an exceptional pianist, composer and a Bossa Nova icon as well. I've followed his musical career since Day One spanning four decades and have collected a good number of his most notable recordings of all-time. To me, the best part of the concert was the appearances of the equally talented husband and wife team of trumpeter, Herb Alpert, and the original Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 vocalist, Lani Hall. To the delight of the audience, they did a medley of my all-time favorites from this impressive collection "The Look of Love" (my friend and I as well as the audience were singing along) and "Fool On The Hill." Ditto with the performance by Joe Pizzulo of one of his hit songs "Never Gonna Let You Go." On this performance the audience started waving their cell phones (some with small flashlights) and you could see the lights illuminated from the phones - it was a beautiful sight - it's almost like seeing sparkling beads all over the place. The performances on "Mas Que Nada" and my very favorite song "Pretty World" were so nice, these are two of the seventeen tracks from this timeless and classic collection.
"Why don't we take a little piece of summer sky
Hang it on a tree
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For you and for me
And for the sun we'll take a lemon bright balloon
You can hold the string
Oh can't you see that little world of ours will be
The prettiest thing
We can gather rain enough for the stream
To hold our happy faces
When we want a breeze, I'll blow you a kiss or two
Take me in your arms and our little world
Will be the place of places
Nothing left to make but breakfast and love
We'll hang a little sign that says,
'Paradise: Population Two'
For that's the way to start to make a pretty world
For me and for you
For you, it's what I wanted to do, to do
To make a world..... with you."
Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 "Classics, Volume 18" is an absolute representation of typical Sergio Mendes music from the initial track "Mas Que Nada" to the final cut, "Alibis."
This is the kind of music you have enjoyed yesterday and will enjoy today, tomorrow and forever.
Timeless music.
This 1987 retrospective is badly in need of a facelift........2005-12-29
If you did not grow up in the 1960's you just might wonder why so many baby boomers continue to be fixated on the music of that decade. The Billboard charts were filled with so many new and exciting sounds. When one thinks of 60's music the British Invasion and Motown immediately come to mind. But there were a number of other sounds that made an impact in the 1960's as well. Sergio Mendes brought his unique blend of Brazilian, jazz and American pop styles to America for the first time in 1966. His music was an instant sensation.
Although Sergio Mendes himself did not sing, he was the pianist, arranger, producer and musical director of this unique group. Led by vocalist Lani Hall, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 would produce some of the most innovative sounds of the late 60's. "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-86" features many of the highlights of the groups outstanding work during this period as well as a pair of hits from a later incarnation of the act in the mid 1980's.
To me "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-`86" was always a very strange concoction. Issued as part of A&M Records 25th anniversary "Classics" series in 1987, I was never very pleased with the way this one was done. If you are looking for the great 60's hits like "The Look of Love", "Scarborough Fair" and "The Fool On The Hill" then you will find them all here. Also included is the groups amazing 1969 hit "Pretty World" which is perhaps my favorite Sergio Mendes tune from that era as well as the groups very first hit single in America "Mas Que Nada". While the group experienced a fair amount of success on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart during this period, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 were a fixture on adult contemporary radio stations throughout the late 60's and early 70's. The group also sold a ton of albums. In fact, their debut LP simply entitled "Sergio Mendes and Brasil `66" remained on Billboards album charts for an amazing 126 weeks! You will find a number of selections from these LP's on this disc including "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Like A Lover" and the lovely "So Many Stars". Also included are a couple of fine instrumentals.
In 1983, Sergio Mendes re-emerged on A & M records with a brand new cast of charactors. The soulful single "Never Gonna Let You Go" featuring the splendid lead vocals of Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller was one of the surprise hits of that year. Slightly more than a year later the wonderful pop single "Alibis" peaked at #29 on the Billboard pop chart. Both of these later singles are included on "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-'86" as well.
As I mentioned earlier I was never overly impressed with "Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66-86". The sound quality is OK but nothing more. The liner notes which were written some 19 years ago are dated and the packaging is drab. Of the 17 tracks in this collection I would question why 3 or 4 of them were included in the first place. Yet for all of these flaws this disc is still the best available Sergio Mendes collection released in the U.S. And that is too bad. In 1997, A&M's British unit released an updated 2 CD collection of Sergio Mendes. I am not particularly wild about that one either. Hopefully, Universal Records, who now controls the A&M catalogue in the U.S. will see fit to release an updated anthology of this remarkable act in the near future.
Keep looking, this is it........2005-09-28
I researched and this one contains most of the songs I love. Bought it and sounds great! Everyone that hears it loves it as well.

Customer Reviews:
Ted Nugent, please phone home.......2007-06-25
Ultra-Lounge Bachelor Pad Royale gives us a great selection of steamy romantic hits from the late 1950s and early 1960s that still sound great today! The lush and creative musical arrangements hold your attention rather easily and the quality of the sound is excellent.
The CD track set kicks off with "The Theme From Route 66" performed by Nelson Riddle & His Orchestra. The sound is cool, savvy and the melody goes along at just the right pace. The strings and percussion enhance this classic number, too. Great! The next track has The John Buzon Trio performing "Caravan" using the organ as they so often did to embellish the beauty of the number. The percussion hits it all just right and "Caravan" boasts a romantic and relentlessly upbeat melody.
"Cool" by Lou Busch & His Orchestra gives us an awesome rendition of this song from West Side Story; and "The Beast" by Milt Buckner oozes class and a certain type of panache you rarely hear these days. Like John Buzon and his buddies; the arrangement for "The Beast" makes good use of the organ. The piano shines on this number, too.
Alvino Rey's rendition of "Night Train" slinks along with a steamy, naturally romantic style that will prove beyond doubt that this music still retains its high quality control to this very day. Martin Denny was doing a lot of exotica by the late 1950s, but his version of "Harlem Nocturne" is sublime! The chimes work well; and the piano together with the bass make this number an instant classic. Hooray!
Sam Butera and his buddies perform a medley of "The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams/Fever" that leaves you sweating from its hot, hot, hot delivery; and "Street Scene '58" makes great use of the sax to romanticize this tune.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The last two tracks on this CD are Julie London's "Black Coffee" and "Melancholy Serenade" by King Curtis. Julie sings "Black Coffee" without a single superfluous note; but you should know that although "Melancholy Serenade" gets the royal treatment from King Curtis, this is not the interpretation of this song that I have heard before. Instead of the dramatic and somewhat boisterous use of the horns; King Curtis's rendition places the organ squarely into the spotlight of the arrangement and the single horn tones down this angle drastically. Nevertheless, the arrangement works well.
The liner notes include an informative essay by R. J. Smith; and the song credits and recording dates are there for you, too. The artwork reflects good taste and there are even two drink recipes!
I highly recommend this CD for fans of "lounge music" and for people who want to remember a time when cool music for lovers actually was cool music for lovers.
Enjoy!
Cool!.......2007-05-13
Brought me back to the days of tuxedos, secret agents and private detectives. Cool, very cool.
LOVE ULTRA LOUNGE!!.......2007-05-12
Nothing can be finer that Ultra Lounge - never a bad thing to say.
Title a bit of a misnomer but..........2007-01-27
Hard to see how some of the tracks on this disc fit in with the whole late-night bachelor pad ethos as they are, quite simply, and in the words of the great Stan Freberg, "too loud, man". That said, this is a great CD. The music is fabulous and beautifully re-mastered (Cy Coleman's "Playboy's Theme" is the epitome of bachelor pad cool and, by itself, worth the price of the disc) while RJ Smith's liner notes are, as ever, entertaining, witty and evocative. In fact the whole package is life-affirming, high-quality fun: just the thing to chase those blues away.
I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10
The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

Ultra Lounge, Volume 5: Wild Cool & Swingin gives us eighteen swinging tracks to delight your ears and make you dance all through the night! The collection of hits doesn't have a dud in the set; and the diversity of the artists couldn't be broader.
The CD track set begins with Dean Martin's classic interpretation of "Ain't That A Kick In The Head." The Nelson Riddle arrangement relies on the horns and the piano is awesome! Dean's voice is in perfect form--energetic and full of masculine warmth as he sings of his new love. A previously unreleased track of "Dig That Crazy Chick" by Sam Butera & The Witnesses follows; Sam & The Witnesses swing hard. Sam's voice is clear and full of excitement as he describes his new girlfriend. The musicians never miss a beat, either!
Bobby Darin performs "More" with sensitivity and panache; I love that piano arrangement by Richard Wess! Peggy Lee's classic rendition of "Fever" absolutely oozes the feminine desire for a man; the people snapping their fingers along with the beat really add to the number! Peggy's voice is rich and vibrant for "Fever." Excellent!
"Danke Schöen" by Wayne Newton will surpass your expectations if you've never heard this ballad before; Wayne sings this with all his heart. Wayne's interpretation of "Danke Schoen" makes his rendition THE definitive interpretation of "Danke Schöen." Jimmie Haskell's orchestra performs beautifully with a firm emphasis on the horns, percussion and strings.
If you want a more playful number, however, check out "French Poodle" by Sam Butera & The Witnesses. Sam sings this to perfection and the horns sound great on "French Poodle!" "Closer To The Bone" by Louis Prima continues in this vein; I believe that you will enjoy "Closer To The Bone" by Louis Prima.
The CD provides us with still more traditional love ballads. Nat King Cole performs "L-O-V-E" without a superfluous note; love that horn solo in the middle of this number! Moreover, Dean Martin croons "Volare (Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu)" with a great musical arrangement; I really like how Dean Martin sings this number in both English and Italian. Great effect!
Julie London delivers "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" with all the style of a consummate performer; and the CD track set ends well with Bobby Darin crooning a great "Hello, Dolly!" Darin sings "Hello, Dolly!" with great care and sensitivity. "Hello, Dolly" provides a strong ending to the CD track set.
The liner notes include great artwork; and R. J. Smith contributes an essay about lounge singers and the nightlife of the late 1950s and early 1960s especially on the Vegas strip. The song credits and recording dates are there for you; and there are even two drink recipes! Bob Norberg at Capitol Recording Studios did a great job of remastering these tunes.
The very special, golden age of The Vegas Strip with its superstars of the 1950s and 1960s may be behind us but this album does a great job of recreating those special times. I highly recommend this CD for fans of lounge music; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will cherish this CD for years to come.
Enjoy!

Great lounge/cocktail sampler.......2005-10-12
The UltraLounge series definately covers the genre throughly, and this one is about the best in the series. Not every song is well-known, but most are very very enjoyable. This is a good place to start if you are introducing yourself to the genre. I thought Bobby Darin's More was the most lush and enjoyable of the tunes. You'll get a chuckle out of Prima's Closer to the Bone, a song not found on the usual Prima samplers. You certainly get a "you are in old Vegas" feel off of these tunes! Check out their UltraLounge website for a good look at the full series. Definately recommended.
Grab a Gin and Tonic, sit in a booth in the back, and enjoy the show........2005-09-29
This is one of my favorite Ultra Lounge discs, as it combines many of the great live acts of the 50s/60s. If you close your eyes while listening to it, you may think you're sitting in the Copa room of the Sands in Las Vegas. A little Louis Prima, some Dean and some Bobby Darin make the night just right.

Rendezvous Lounge Vol 2.......2007-05-15
I simply enjoyed the European styled fusion-jazz format. It was a worthy purchase and look forward to more of Mark Gorbulew's work in the future.
Excellent.......2007-03-12
I love this CD the music is melodic with an slightly up tempo beat. Its relaxing but doesn't put you to sleep.
High Expectations Unrealized..........2006-11-12
This is a fair cd. The problem is it is not as good as the first Rendevous Lounge. Round one was a classic with great cut after great cut. Round 2 has good cuts but in my mind none stands out or has a must have quality. As is often the case with movie sequels this cd doesn't compare. However it is not bad as passive background music.
sophisticated overall jazz feel.......2006-04-03
This is a great CD. Each performance has quality song writing, musical voicings and performances. The selections are varied, but related in style and 'energy' so there is great flow.
It is not like some albums which just sample other records and artists, the songs sound Fresh and original. It is also not like 'trance' which repeats one sound/bar/phrase ad nauseum. The selections are varied, but related in style and 'energy' so there is great flow.
Overall, the selections have a sophisticated smooth, brazillian or NY jazz feel. Lots of talent on this CD!
I enjoy this music while walking, working on the computer, doing light chores with my headphones on, or just listening. Great Brunch music on a Sunday morning too!
Love this Rendezvous Lounge CD.......2006-03-23
We previously bought Rendezvous Lounge I and really enjoyed it. It's a little more techno and eclectic. "Lounge II," is more mellow and polished and we love it.

LOVE IT!.......2007-05-13
Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.
Great for dinner parties.......2007-04-04
It's very mellow, although there are some points where a woman is doing tribal screams or something. I think it's supposed to add to the tropical feel of the disc. It kind of surprised me, and I didn't particularly like that part but overall I really liked the CD. In fact, the whole Ultra-Lounge series is great.
Boreing.......2005-10-08
I was a little dissapointed, very generic, kinda like hawaiian elavator music even the famus Marten Denny Quite Village was not the original it was more somber.
Mondo Exellento.......2005-09-29
I have purchased several of the other Ultra Lounge series, and this one is definately one of my favoites. The exotic sounds are much different than the music on the other compilations, from the different take on Misirlou to the wacky wildness of Jungle Madness. Anyone who is a fan of the Ultra Lounge series should check this out, but be warned, this is mostly an instrumental album.

Definately AM Feelin This..........2007-03-27
I'm a big fan of this series. I love the creative beats and vocals. You have to hear track #8 - Simeon's "not feelin this". Oh man this song is good. I'd buy the album just for this one song. It's so good I gave this album 5 stars for it. Check it out!
Om Lounge, Vol. 10.......2007-03-09
Great music for dancing and energy for the office. As long as you keep the volume down.
Classic.......2006-04-12
The type of album that you do one of many things to. Cruise, have sex, and be one with nature's pine trees. Its the best OM lounge cd out. It even beat out OM 3, in my opinion.
Stand out tracks being, #4, 10, 8, 9, ............ and pretty much the rest of the album.
That's my review, its tight, go cop it.
P.S. Its for the mature crowd, great lounge music.
OM Lounge Vol. 10.......2006-03-11
Exquisite is the best word for this cd.I own all ten volumes and this has become my favorite. It ranks right up there with Mushroom Jazz 4&5, and Sky Lounge. Right from the first listen I was blown away as to how sweet this sounds. It has just the right mix of instrumentals and vocals. I highly recommend this cd.

The back of this two-CD set may say "File under Lounge," but frankly, lounging will be the very last thing on your mind once you put Louis and Keely on. It's simply impossible to stand still while the duo, backed by Sam Butera and the Witnesses, gets going. When Keely sings "Hey boy, I can really cook," there's a tiny chance she's talking about something that takes place in the kitchen, but the galloping bass line behind her says that she really belongs to the dance floor. Whoo-hee! Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" is taken at a frenetic pace--do these people ever pause to breathe? The bulk of this collection was recorded between 1957 and 1962, and it makes for an explosive document of a now-gone era when men in sharp suits hung out at the Copa, babes with pointy rocket-launcher breasts at their arms. The sheer effortlessness of it all is still supremely exciting. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
fun swing.......2005-02-12
i just started to appreciate louis prima's band-this remastered double cd offers an excellent listening experience.
Jump, Jive, An' Wail!.......2004-06-17
Songs from Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses. Songs are great. Compilation includes songs from "The Wildest", "The Call of the Wildest" and "The Wildest Show at Tahoe".
Fast, funny, and worth every penny!.......2002-09-09
I was skeptical about buying a compilation CD set for fear it wouldn't be good... but I was wrong! I can't get enough of these CD's. I do Swing dance and Lindy Hop, and I think some of the tempos to these songs are a bit fast for dancing, but excellent for listening to when you just want to be in a good mood! Keely has a great voice, and Louis is just plane hysterical :D
A trip to the Moon on nuclear wings!.......2001-12-08
What a blast!
This was my first introduction to Mr. Prima & Co. What a swingin' treat!
You can tell from each and every cut on this twin CD set that these guys were having fun. Many of the songs have little ad-libs between Louis, Keely Smith, Sam Butera, and the other band members. Louis jumps in between solos to throw out comments, he'll scat, even proto-rap, and is having such a good time he'll try to keep from laughing while he and Sam duel with brass. Only true professional musicians can get away with that sort of thing and make it sound good. Louis & Co. are top-notch pros.
Keely solos on a few cuts to round things out, and basically, you get the feeling of what it must have been like to be kickin' it in Vegas back in the swank era while taking in Louis Prima's act. Maybe tomorrow night, you'll catch Dino at the Sands, and take in Torme on Tuesday. Or, maybe you'll just keep coming back here to see Louis, Keely, Sam, and the Witnesses again and again.
Many of the songs are just plain fun ("Robin Hood/Oh Babe", "Banana Split For My Baby", "Felicia No Capicia", "Greenback Dollar Bill", "There'll Be No Next Time"), and even the old standards take on a wink and a smile when Louis gets ahold of them ("The Music Goes 'Round And Around", "That Old Black Magic", "Just One of Those Things", "Embraceable You")!
Get yourself a martini, sit back and relax, and get ready to be swung back to swanksville. This set is one swingin' good time, whether you're six or sixty!
Fun with the swing masters.......2000-11-09
Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses constitute probably the single greatest influence on today's swing scene. I am not exaggerating. And this double-CD is a great place to start: Over two hours of remastered music, a great production design (neo-retro), and long liner notes. My only problem with the presentation is that the individual musician credits are left out. A must for all swing dancers and jazz musicians! ///// KOBY.

LOVE ULTRA-LOUNGE!.......2007-05-13
Love this kind of music - can't get enough - have most all of the CDs. Excellent New Jersey-based company with excellent foresight and retro-understanding for the best party and jazz combos. Excellent choice for any kind of day or evening, party or relaxation time.
Great Compilation!.......2007-03-20
I would recommend this CD as well as the original "Wild Cool & Swingin'".
You'll like them both!
Wild, Cool & Swingin' Too is #1 in my book.......2006-10-10
Don't get me wrong - I've got most of the Ultra-Lounge discs and I love them all - but this one is the best. Each disc focuses on a facet of Lounge music (Bossa Nova, Mambo, Exotica). Most of these are a kick in a "They sure did some crazy music" way, but the two Wild Cool discs focus on the more popular acts of the era.
The disc is hopping starting off with Eydie Gorme in a blistering read of the latin classic "Frenesi". Steve Lawrence follows with a barnstorming take on "Night and Day". I can't even listen to Sinatra's version without falling asleep now. The pace doesn't let up with Bobby Darin's phenomental "Charade" and Nancy Wlson's "A Lot of Livin' To Do".
Dinah Washington contributes the hot jazz classic "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" (a.k.a. the song from the Tom & Jerry classic) and the sultry "Destination Moon". Tony Bennet does "Plenty of Money and You" which was featured on the Swingers soundtrack. Mel Torme sings the cheeky and hilarious "Midnight Swinger".
Other standout tracks include everything. No seriously, there isn't a bad track on the disc with one outstanding cut after another. If you want some classic lounge tracks, you've found them. I think this is better than Wild, Cool & Swingin', but it's great, too, so why not buy both of them?
Perfect for the midnight swinger in all of us!.......2006-07-26
This CD is chock full of great songs performed by some of the greatest talents of the 20th century. There is a total of twenty-one (yes, twenty-one) tracks on this CD making it both a lot of fun and a great value. It's also excellent for lounge music lovers and fans of classic pop vocals.
The CD starts off with Eydie Gorme doing a smash "Frenesi." The song is beautifully arranged and Eydie's voice is in excellent form. Her other half, Steve Lawrence, follows up quickly with the beautiful "Night And Day." Awesome!
The songs on this CD are all wonderfully musically arranged and the quality of the sound is excellent. No excess noise here! Bob Norberg at Capitol Recording Studios did an excellent job of digitally remastering these tracks.
I loved Nancy Wilson's electric version of "A Lot Of Livin' To Do;" and Peggy Lee does some hot job of "The Boy From Ipanema." Bobby Darin fans will delight that two of his songs are on this CD: "Charade" and "Call Me Irresponsible." Dinah Washington fans get an equally nice treat; Dinah sings both "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" and "Destination Moon" on this album.
Wayne Newton does a particularly good job with "Strangers In The Night" and I also liked the style with which Louis Prima delivers "5 Months, 2 Weeks, 2 Days." One playful number that I really enjoyed was the medley of "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" by Louis Prima. A chorus accompanies Louis on this number and the result is thrilling!
The liner notes are very, very good. You get song credits and the dates the songs were recorded by the artists. There's an extensive essay by R. J. Smith--and there are even two drink recipes: one for a "blue blazer" and the other for a "millionaire." Not bad, not bad.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals, lounge music, and the great vocalists of the 20th century such as Tony Bennett, Dinah Washington, Louis Prima, Dean Martin and Bobby Darin. All these performers and many more can be found attacking their songs with all their might here on this CD! Get this CD, turn down the lights and enjoy your favorite drink--and maybe enjoy a little romance while you do!

Customer Reviews:
Flying down to Rio? No need to--that bossa nova beat is in orbit around my earlobes..........2007-06-17
Bossa nova music was introduced to the world primarily by Antonio Carlos Jobim; and we are forever in debt to him for his gift to us. Bossa nova music exudes elegance, sophistication and a soothing rhythm that could bleach all neuroses right out of your system! This CD proves it.
The CD track set opens with "So Danço Samba (Jazz 'N' Samba)." Wanda De Sah sings the Portuguese lyrics to perfection and the musical arrangements makes great use of the horns, piano and percussion. The overall effect stuns me with its beauty; and I was left yearning for more once the number ended.
I wasn't disappointed. "Meditation (Meditacáo)" is something you may well recognize when you hear it even though you might not recognize this tune by name alone. Laurindo Almeida and The Bossa Nova All Stars perform this number with a smooth as silk approach that leaves you believing you're in a heaven on Earth. Terrific! Billy May & His Orchestra perform a wonderful rendition of the very romantic tune entitled "The Look Of Love;" May's arrangement uses great use of the horns as his arrangements always did; and the percussion plays without a superfluous note to enhance the beauty of "The Look Of Love."
"One Note Samba/Recado Bossa Nova" fuses together these two melodies on one track for a great effect; the romantic and sophisticated approach to this blend reflects good judgment as it oozes elegance, too. "Recado Bossa Nova" picks up the tempo and it makes good sense to make "Recado Bossa Nova" an extension of "One Note Samba" instead of the other way around.
"Misirlou" makes great use of both the guitar and the percussion; and Si Zentner's rendition of "Desafinado" uses the horns beautifully, especially with the solo horn at the beginning of this number. "Baia" has a sensual, romantic flavor to it as well.
"The Girl From Ipanema/Manha De Carnival" uses a person's whistling instead of vocals--very creative! "Más Que Nada" has an early 1960s rock flavor to it that surprises you; it works very well.
The CD ends strong with a bonus track of the great Julie London performing the classic "Fly Me To The Moon." Julie never misses a beat and the musical arrangement complements her vocals to perfection.
The liner notes include the song credits; and R. J. Smith contributes an informative, thoughtful essay about bossa nova. Bob Norberg at Capitol Recording Studios did a great job of digitally remastering these numbers, too.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of lounge music; and people who enjoy that bossa nova beat from the 1960s will love every minute of this great album!
Enjoy!
LOVE IT!.......2007-05-13

I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

Welcome to Bossa Novaville!
This is Bossa Nova music at its loveliest. Put this CD on and listen closely, sit back, relax, stay comfy and savor the beauty of this wonderful kind of music. Close your eyes and picture yourself in the pristine beaches of Rio on "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars."
This is an impressive collection of Bossa Nova tunes made popular by musical legends, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes, Laurindo Almeida, Ray Anthony, Walter Wanderley, Cannonball Adderley, among many other artists.
Laurindo Almeida shines and shows off his guitar artistry with his renditions of "Meditation," "Girl From Ipanema" and "Manha De Carnaval" (A Day In The Life of a Fool). As you listen, you will be delighted with the magic guitar of Howard Roberts on his performance of "Triste" accompanied by percussionist Claudio Miranda. Billy May and his Orchestra's take on "The Look of Love" is also a highlight and so with the last song and a bonus track, Julie London's charming version of "Fly Me To The Moon."
Wanda De Sah's voice is one of the loveliest voices I've ever heard. Her versions of "So Danco Samba" and "So Nice" are two of the tracks to beguile with. Her vocal style on "So Nice" blends perfectly with Sergio Mendes' brilliant piano playing.
You will also discover the artistry of trombonist Zi Zentner's and saxophonist Bill Perkin's with their interpretations of two of the most enchanting tunes from this collection, "Desafinado" and "Baia," respectively.
The most beautiful tune from this collection, to me, is "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" (Corcovado), saxophonist Cannonball Adderley shares the spotlight with Sergio Mendes in creating one of the most beautiful instrumental version of this gem of a melody. I could listen to this track endlessly and enjoy every minute of it.
Give it a listen and experience that fascinating sound that took America by storm in the sixties . . . "Blame it on the Bossa Nova!"
