There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

    Album Description

Electrelane are an instrumental moody pop electronic/punk band from England. These ladies make music reminiscent of Stereolab or Ennio Morricone's classic soundtracks. Mr. Lady records.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty cool.......2005-08-17

All in all I liked the album, although the other reviews were correct in that it does not do much to be unique.
Actually, I was surprised to hear riffs lifted directly from other bands, like Hot Butter, and even Devo. So if you're into that kinda stuff, I would suggest you check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Electrelane - 'Rock It To The Moon' (Mr.Lady).......2005-01-25

Coming to you straight out of Brighton,UK.'Rock It...' is the all-female electronic/Avant Garde band's first release,as they have one other that came out as it's follow-up.The gals were supposed to play a pub in my area fairly recent, but the gig was apparently cancelled. If this CD is any indication, they should be decent to see live.Tracks that I thought carried some weight were "Gabriel"(nice keyboard work),"Blue Stranggler",the krautrock-ish "Long Dark" and "U.O.R.".Line-up:Mia Clarke-guitar,Rachel Dalley-bass,Verity Susman-keyboards and Emma Gaze-drums.Might appeal to fans of Sonic Youth,Stereolab,PJ Harvey and KaitO.A very decent find.

4 out of 5 stars Snapshot of a band in development.......2004-10-26

Formed in Brighton in 1998, this feminist avant rock four-piece set up their own record label with backing from Sony a couple of years ago. A young band, guitarist Mia Clarke was still preparing for her A-levels during the recording of this debut album. They had already put out a couple of singles on In Denial and Fierce Panda, one of which, Film Music, turns up in re-recorded form both here and on an EP which includes remixes by Echoboy, Treva Whateva and Jagz Kooner, and is where I first heard the band. Approved by The Wire, they were written up in issue 208 and tracks by them show up on Wiretapper 8 and Wiretapper 9 cover disc CDs.
Although they use modern production techniques and equipment, mixing with ProTools, the overall sound is quite retro because of their love of Farfisa organ and analogue instruments, and is predominantly instrumental despite the occasional vocal phrase emerging through the mix. Long Dark reminds one of nothing so much as Syd-era Pink Floyd, elsewhere the twangy surf guitar is redolent of Duane Eddy. However, their experimental approach and use of digital samplers puts them squarely in the twenty-first century. The music is energetic and enthusiastic and bursts out of the speakers in a long and inventive 65 minute rush, anchored by the Krautrock drumming from Emma Gaze and Rachel Dalley's relentless bass lines.
One can pinpoint their overall sound at this point quite accurately. Create a hyperbolic graph of the Pink Floyd's sonic soundscape from their first album onwards and extrapolate forwards and backwards. Find the point 4.7 months prior to Piper At The Gates of Dawn, and there you are. This moment is probably as fleeting in Electrelane's existence as it was in the Pink Floyd's, and will be interesting to see what twists and turns their music will take them to.
A barking dog on the opening track is subverted into a sly Stooges reference. One track, Blue Straggler, features an exquisite string section, arranged by founder member and chief musician Verity Susman. Other tracks evoke boats, carnival rides, church services and film soundtracks, all on one giddy sonic trip. This album, recorded over 4 weeks in September and October 2000, catches this ever-evolving band at a particular and special point in their uncharted trajectory

3 out of 5 stars Hardly groundbreaking, but worth a listen........2004-04-13

This insturmental British quartet seems largely known for the number of bands to which they've been compared. I think the comparisons are a little overblown, but the album more than anything resembles a slightly unfinished work. Without vocals (there are some small exceptions here and there), the group just doesn't really manage to carve out its own niche. It lacks a unique sound that lets you know that you're definitely NOT listening to something by another group.

All told, if you enjoy the samples, you'll probably enjoy the album in its entirety. While consistent, it's a real mishmash of electronic, punk, and occasionally ambient sounds with a little bit of vocal harmonizing here and there. Not exactly upbeat, not exactly downbeat. It's a little bit of everything without standing out from the crowd-- which makes it difficult to give Electrelane's debut a higher rating.

    4 out of 5 stars rockin' indeed.......2003-06-17

so I read the other review, and mostly agree with what was said, I think comparisons to Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emporer! are a bit of a stretch---this band resembles early Stereolab much more than either of the two previously mentioned bands--its a hard rocking interplay of rhythmic guitar groove, feedback-laced good times--a great background, rocking type of album--wear it jogging, listen to it in the car on a road-trip--you won't be humming catchy riffs per se, but you will tap your foot in time and love the energy--its got that feedback lounge type of feel that makes one think that the girls grew up listening to Stan Getz just as much as the Velvet Underground--Bridgette Bardot followed by Sonic Youth--Esquivel with equal parts Ramones--well...you get the idea

    4 out of 5 stars Essential history.......2007-06-24

Hooray for Pavilion Records and all other organizations collecting early recordings and transferring them to CD for the world to enjoy! Of course since they are EARLY recordings (1917-1927) it has that fizzy wax sound to it and the lyrics get mushy at times. That either makes it endearing or annoying, depending on your perspective. It's lovely to finally hear the Brox Sisters sing again, let John Steel's tenor soar, and to hear what You'd Be Surprised sounded like sung by a girl. The earliest songs of Irving Berlin may not be his best, but are a refreshing glimpse into his 30s. Half of the songs on this disc debuted in Berlin's own Music Box Revue at the theater he built after WWI.

5 out of 5 stars So Long and Farewell.......2004-06-19

This is by far some of the best tunes that have ever come out of San Antonio, TX. Too bad it could not last langer. in early 2004 Casey left the band. Mike and Chris continued on with a new addition. The drums really bring out a little more in the music. Altuhough they do not perform as the Bop Kings, they are a must see for anyone in the SA area. Lokk for show listing for the Copy Cats.

    4 out of 5 stars BOPPIN' TUNES.......2002-09-26

If you could bottle the energy The Bop Kings put into ROCK IT TO THE MOON, you could light up the Las Vegas strip for a week!! Casey Miller's vocals are over the moon showing a range that few singers can employ. Tomcat Miller spanks that bass like it was a red headed step child. The only reason I gave it four stars rather than five is the guitar playing of Mike Nesloney. Being a San Antonio resident, I frequently get to see the boys live, and I've seen Mike improve to the point where few could compete with him now. I can hardly wait til the new CD comes out next year on the Rollin' Rock Records label. I applaud El Toro Records for recognizing the talent of this trio before they hit the rockabilly world with a bang at The Rockabilly Hall of Fame Festival in 2002.

5 out of 5 stars How could one not wish for more?.......2003-08-30

I love and hate this cd. I love it because it thrills whom ever listens to it with the beautiful but neglected works of Arthur Sullivan that were not written in partnership with W.S. Gilbert. The recording and the quality of the preformances are fantastic. I especially loved 'The Emerald Isle' and 'The Beauty Stone'. It filled me with the desire to consume these operas en total. Unfortunatly this is also the reason I hate it. It is quite difficult to find complete recordings of these operas (Besides the dreadull Pearl Label ones). From just a few scraps of the Emerald Isle I am in love with it, but seemingly doomed to either subpar recordings of nothing at all...woe to me!

This is in many ways an excellent and very welcome addition to the growing range of recordings of Sullivan's "non-G" music. The items selected are enjoyable and are well-sung and well-performed. However, the disc is not generously filled. While this may well have been unavoidable, what is not is the decision to occupy a significant chunk of the limited time available with selections from "The Martyr of Antioch". While I personally am an admirer of this sacred music drama, it is just that, and from 1880 too. The fact that it was semi-staged for a few performances in the 1890s no more makes it an 1890s opera than (eg) a modern concert performance of "Ivanhoe" would turn the latter into a 21st century cantata! The inclusion of the "Martyr" items is all the more annoying in view of the lack of coverage of some bona fide 1890s operas, notably "The Rose of Persia". So one star off for poor judgement in this respect - but still a very worthwhile disc for Sullivanians!

5 out of 5 stars Any Arthur Sullivan fan MUST buy this CD.......2000-02-22

Many people claim that outside his partnership with librettist Sir William Gilbert, Sir Arthur Sullivan was unable to write music that could be remembered. This recording has precisely the goal of making us remember what a truly marvellous composer Sullivan really was. All the recordings on this CD are excerpts from Sullivan "operas" written without Gilbert's involvement. Even though most of these pieces (apart from "Ho! Jolly Jenkin!") are now completely forgotten, hidden behind the success of the Savoy Operas, such as Sullivan's "Mikado" or "HMS Pinafore", written in collaboration with Gilbert, they deserve more recognition.

All pieces are sung by recognized Gilbert and Sullivan singers, and their professionalism is at its usual level.

The two flaws that I can find to this album are: 1) It is too short (approximatively 50 minutes) but I suspect it was the result of lack of funds. 2) The booklet makes no mention whatsoever of Gilbert, even though his influence on Sullivan's musical career was essential. Gilbert had collaborated on the adaptation of "The Martyr of Antioch", but is not even mentioned. Furthermore, Sullivan might have never considered operetta (or light opera) as an adequate musical genre (for Sullivan, in his early years, wanted to achieve fame as a "serious" composer) had it not been for the success of "Trial by Jury" and other successful operettas all written during his partnership with Gilbert.

But these are just mere details. The music is impeccable, so I encourage everyone, especially all the Savoyards out there who only know Sullivan's music through his collaboration with Gilbert, to buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording, long overdue.......1999-03-11

This CD spotlights Sullivan's non-Gilbert works, and, as such, is full of surprises. Still, the producers seemed to have decided to put in as much material that is "Sullivanesque" as possible. "Ho jolly jenkin" from Ivanhoe is probably the most familiar, and perhaps should have been replaced by something else from the same work. The biggest failing is the neglect of The Rose of Persia in favor of The Emerald Isle. The selections from The Emerald Isle that appear on this recording are not even Sullivan's arrangements, since he died before he finished it. Besides, The Rose of Persia is much better, both as drama and as music. The biggest surprises are "The gay hussar" from The Chieftain and the two selections from The Martyr of Antioch. The madrigal from Haddon Hall is performed a little too slow. The pace of "The sun's in the sky" may be too brisk for those familiar with earlier recordings, but I like it. "Ride on" (The Beauty Stone) is perhaps the most uncharacteristic selection. The soloists are okay, though the tenor creaks once or twice. All in all, a recording not to be missed by any G&S fan. Maybe the next time a recording like this is undertaken, we'll get an entire work -- how long must we wait to hear The Martyr of Antioch in its entirety in a modern recording?! (And yes, I know The Rose of Persia is due out this year . . . .)

    5 out of 5 stars A ground-breaking release.......1999-02-21

This is the recording which finally proves that Sullivan's lesser-known operas should be rated more highly than they are. There are no poor excerpts on this recording, but those that particularly stand out are When the Budding Bloom of May (Haddon Hall), both items from The Beauty Stone and the Finale from The Emerald Isle. Those people who think that Sullivan was not much of a composer away from Gilbert should be pleasantly surprised. Hopefully, this recording will prove successful enough to encourage some enterprising recording company to release complete professional recordings of Sullivan's unjustly neglected works.
