Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dark and Haunting, Just Great!.......2006-01-30

This will always be one of the best scores Kilar has done for a movie, the music is dark, haunting, and romantic. My favorite songs are "Love Remembered" and "Mina/Dracula", every time I listen to "Love Remembered" I remember the scene in the movie where Dracula meets Mina, where they fall in love with eachother, this is just a very beautiful, haunting, romantic song. I really love vampire movies, especially if they have romance and very good music, and the movie that has that is "Bram Stoker's Dracula", I just love vampire romance with beautiful music. The other song "Mina/Dracula", is dark and romantic, it's a really beautiful song, Wojciech Kilar will always be one of my favorite composers, I just love his music.

I don't care what anyone says, this is a fabulous cd if only for Annie Lennox's "Lovesong for a Vampire"

5 out of 5 stars Still Scares Me .......2005-04-24

While I am not the biggest fan of the book on which Coppola's movie is somewhat based on, the score is just absolutely beautiful and unforgettable. I hate to use the word haunting because it may come off as a cliche, but I'm still amazed at how some of the tracks (Dracula - The Beginning, The Brides, Mina's Photo, Mina/Dracula, and The Storm) can still raise the hair on my neck.
I'm not too crazy about the Annie Lennox song that closes both the soundtrack and the movie, but I could listen to "The Storm" over and over again and never get tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars Shivers.......2004-11-01

To this day I still get goosebumps when the opening music crescendos and the title of the movies hits the screen. It perfectly accents the visuals. It does such a good job I'm having trouble thinking of a soundtrack that equals it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2004-09-09

The one thing that strikes me the most when I'm listening to this soundtrack is the amazing use of "instrumental" emotion.
Wojciech Kilar has a very special and rare ability to use an instrument to grand effect, he knows how to use an instrument emotionally a great example of this can be heard on "Love Remembered" where he manages to create an emotional state with the bare help of a simple flute. Its very rare for a composer to capture the very essence of the instrument itself, and what's even more rare is how he manages to compile an album filled with various emotions like: sadness, loneliness, love and lust; in my opinion no one has ever been able to grab me the way that this soundtrack has. The scale of greatness is very high, take for example the opening song "The Beginning" it starts out very slow and paced, but then it erupts into a full-blown orchestra on the verve of total submission; it then slows down when demonic voices comes through...but only to be over shined by the angelic voice of the dawn.

It's very obvious what Wojciech Kilar tried to accomplish with this score, the wanted to make a soundtrack that is capable of adapting every kind of emotion from the aggressive, yet gentle "Vampire Hunters" to the heart drenching pain of "Love Eternal." As I stated above; its very rare for a composer to capture the very heart of a movie or a play, the movie is also going to reflect something else while the music usually moves the opposite direction, that is not the case in this soundtrack, the soundtrack is a sound version of the movie, practically an exact copy of the film. The movie was and still is the best adaptation of the book, it manages to capture the very soul of the book, and that's why Gary Oldman gave the performance of his life.

Gary Oldman managed to capture the very soul of Dracula (not Vlad Tepes). The order of the Dracul, a Dragon, Vlad Tepes the son of Dracul and the heir to his kingdom was in life a very brutal and mean spirited person, although to many his considered to be a Saint that saved Romania from the Turks and Islam. The soundtrack is one of those "one of a kind" masterpieces that probably never will come again, Wojciech Kilar manages to capture and explore the "Dracula" theme to the fullest. And now I want to highlight some of the songs, first up is the heartbreakingly wonderful "Mina's Photo" the songs knows exactly how to compliment Wynona's picture perfectly, and its heartbreaking when you see Dracula shedding a tear when he sees the picture...legendary stuff I tell you. "Lucy's Party" is another example of the amazing capability the soundtrack has, the song displays a very frightening side of the outspoken Lucy. "Ascension" the moment where God frees Dracula from his curse, you see Mina holding him in his arms as he seeks redemption towards the ceiling, unbearable to witness this scene...it just breaks my heart. The soundtrack is my personal favorite of all time as it has everything a real soundtrack should have, no other soundtrack has managed to capture me the way that this has.

The nine instrumental pieces on this 1972-vintage blaxploitation soundtrack are everything you, Quentin Tarantino, or yo' mama could want: funky, slick, exquisitely dated. Thank then-ubiquitous arranger Gene Page, who arranged and wrote them. Program your CD player to avoid the excruciating--perhaps appropriately so; Blacula was a horror flick, after all--vocal numbers that fill out the set. The Hues Corporation give no hint that their masterful "Rock the Boat" was just a couple of summers down the chronological road, while the 21st Century Ltd.'s subsequent disappearance is absolutely no mystery. --Rickey Wright

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movie sountracks of all time!.......2007-07-05

Let me preface that when Blacula was released, I wasnt even born. I just recently rented Blacula and its sequel "Scream Blacula Scream" While watching Blacula, I immeditaely got into the film, and more importantlly the various music that played during many of the filmes scenes. Some of the songs guage the emotional scale. For example, after listening to "Finding Love, Losing Love" I started to feel sorry for this murderous creature. I belive ths CD is out of print now. You can buy it here on the marketplace, but it wont be cheap. I managed to find it new on ebay for 10 bucks.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome but TOO SHORT!!.......2003-08-03

This is an OUTSTANDING cd and easily one of the best Blaxploitation soundtracks. The instrumentals have all the elements you expect from a good funk soundtrack. It's got the great beat, the big bass lines, and that big horn sound! "Stalkwalk" is incredible and "The Call" is a beautiful slow tempo tune. The vocals are pretty weak with the exception of "There He Is Again." The problem is that most of the tracks are under two minutes in length. You end up wanting so much more. I would love to hear an extended version of these tunes if there was one. Very short cd but outstanding musical quality! EVERY instrumental is great! Check it out!

3 out of 5 stars How 'bout some cheese with your blood soup?.......2001-08-23

Loved the instrumentals (which take up most of the CD), but for the most part the vocal tracks are amateurish and pretty cheesy. No hard funk in the mix, but plenty of choppy and groovy action tracks...even some creepy suspense tracks toward the end! I'd have given this album 5 STARS if it weren't for the barely-listenable vocal tracks, which I usually just skip altogether when listening to this CD. The rest of the album is HIGHLY recommended for BLAXPLOITATION and HORROR soundtrack collectors alike...

    5 out of 5 stars "It's worth it".......1999-11-19

Blacula is a classic in its own right, and the music is fantastic. The Hues Corporation "There He is Again", "What the World Knows", and "I'm Gonna get you" are in themselves worth the price of the CD. The 21st Century Limited "Main Chance" is great. "The Call" is superb, being just like an instrumental "Main Chance" But let me just say the whole album is a gem, with that 70's disco beat. It's a miracle this is on CD sountrack. Get it now and "look the other way when he come by you!"

This album amazingly has EVERY bit of music (eight minutes away from the entire legnth of the movie) used in the new edition of the 1931 classic DRACULA. The violin music is excellent, not to mention creepy. I would reccomend it to anyone.

The best-known soundtracks of composer Philip Glass have stood the test of time extremely well. Today, we associate Koyaanisqatsi as much with Glass's vast soundscape as we do with director Godfrey Reggio's haunting images. Philip on Film gathers three complete Glass scores--Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Dracula, along with selections from La Belle et la Bête, Anima Mundi, Kundun, Mishima, The Secret Agent, The Thin Blue Line, and a handful of short films.

The Glass trademarks--those machinelike arpeggios; that familiar, if odd, electronic keyboard sound; the influence of non-Western vocal techniques--are all here. Glass has forged his own unmistakable style of epic-sounding minimalism, but it never gets stale. A few unreleased tracks on Philip on Film will serve hardcore Glass fans (who probably already own most of these works), including "Facades" from Godfrey Reggio's Evidence and a track each from Atom Egoyan's Diaspora and Peter Greenaway's The Man in the Bath. --Jason Verlinde

2 out of 5 stars SEVERELY ALTERED "Belle et la Bete".......2005-12-22

...which is uncalled for. IT IS SPED UP from its original recording, making some of the high notes hit by the female singers truly chipmunk-like. I can't believe they would release this...let's speed it up to fit it on ONE disk! What a GOOD idea. No. Not a good idea.

4 out of 5 stars Reviewers are not looking at this correctly.......2003-04-03

John Adams and Steve Reich were first introduced to me in detail through their respective Nonesuch 10-disc re-releases of previous material. These box sets were never intended to be some new experience for the seasoned Adams and Reich fans, but were instead created either to introduce these artists to those of us who hadn't previously heard their works or to serve as a nicely packaged collector's item.

Like both of the aforementioned box sets, the Philip on Film box set contains complete selections of a few recordings, some new material, and some other works stripped down (either by editing the tracks or by including a few complete tracks from each work). While this package could have easily been ten discs long, evidently Nonesuch was only interested in including those recordings which were featured on the Philip on Film Tour.

I encourage any new Glass listener to purchase this great set: it served as a superb intro to his works for me, as did the Adams and Reich sets.

    4 out of 5 stars A re-approach.......2001-12-10

Everyone who thinks of this as purely a repackaged box set doesn't fully understand the nature of this set. In the introduction, Philip Glass mentions that most of the works represented is from a series of concerts where the music is interpreted live while the movie is presented on a screen behind the performers. I personally attented these performances in Austin, TX and was very pleased with the results. The first night consisted of the Shorts, or the 5th disc of this set. The Man in the Bath, Passages, Evidence (Facades with synth), Diaspora, and Anima Mundi where all performed live by The Philip Glass ensemble with the movie itself in the background. The following 4 performances where of Powaqqasti, Le Belle et La Bete, Dracula, and Koyaanisqatsi. Seeing these films with the music has shed a new light on these scores for me, because I had previously heard almost all of them, but to the recording at hand.
This set of discs is something you might pick up at a live concert of your favorite local band, representing what they played that night in studio recording. This set of discs was released to accompany Philip's current world tour of Philip On Film. Although almost all of it has been released previously, this isn't just a way to make a "quick buck". This is a great way to get most of the music played at these performances and, most of all, is a bargin way to get a lot of his best music to date. I also don't personally agree with the "highlights" idea with Belle and Mundi, but to a person wanting post-Einstein Glass, this is a good way to start. Also, I would think that anyone who believes that Glass has written the same music since Einstein needs to listen more and generalize less because there is a wealth of music out there that you may not realize exists.

3 out of 5 stars The Worst of Phil?.......2001-10-30

Anyone who thinks that Powaqqatsi is "the worst of Phil" needs to have his head examined.

2 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2001-10-17

Okay, I give up! The world (or at least the music industry) wants to keep Philip Glass's star in ascendance, with new commissions, and new recordings, or expensive repackagings of previously issued recordings. Glass hasn't had a new idea since 1976, when his "Einstein on the Beach" was the freshest new sound imaginable. Basically, all he's done is re-write that work over and over (and over!) again ever since. While there are cool parts to some of these scores, most of this is the same arpeggiated chords he's been using for the last 25 years! Somebody wake me up when this guy gets a new idea!

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I liked most of this CD........2002-02-18

I wish the majority of tracks were a little more haunting. My favorite track was VIDE COR MEUM. Unfortunately, it's the shortest track on the CD. A lot of the pieces are very recognizable. They blend together well. It doesn't feel like a typical "soundtrack" CD.

5 out of 5 stars "Choral treasures to cherish...BRILLIANT".......2001-11-21

Before I begin my review, must make mention of the past projects this group of musicians and singers have collaborated on ~ "Cinema Choral Classics"(SILKD-6015)..."Cinema Choral Classics II"(SILKD-6017)..."Cinema's Classic Romances"(SILKD-6018)...this their latest release "Apocalypse:Cinema Choral Classics", is no exception...BRILLIANT!

Under the watchful eye of producer James Fitzpatrick, choir master David Temple and the Crouch End Festival Chorus, conductors Nic Raine and Paul Bateman with The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra...plus the original soundtrack orchestra with conductor Stepan Konicek on "THE NINTH GATE"(Wojciech Kilar), is mesmirizing, almost hypnotic in substance, beautiful solo by Charlotte Kinder.

Entire album is a must have for "film-score-buffs", and if Silva Screen Classics continue to do such an outstanding job, my collection will go through the rafters.

        Total Time: 74:33 on 18 Tracks ~ Silva Screen Records SILKD-6025 ~ (2001)
