Paradiso.......2007-07-05
Let me just say- a masterpiece. Specially the Requiem part of the album I liked a lot: Jenkins' harmonies, novelty of interpretation, and combination of styles. Integration of best elements of classical Requiem and modern composition.
A further expansion of a talented composer.......2007-02-01
I guess you could call me a "number one" fan of Karl Jenkins music. I find his music uplifting and soul-stirring. After a few listenings to Requiem, I quickly found so much to enjoy out of the variety of tracks.
For consumers that are only aware of Diamond Music, Jenkins has composed a whole collection of works, five to be exact, that are under the Adiemus title. You must, I repeat, must expand your collection to include some if not all of these titles, particularly Adiemus I, II & IV. These are such emotionally charged works, fashioned with a chorus of female singers and soloists and full orchestra. Do a quick search and you'll learn more about this themed works. But I digress....
Requiem is unique in that the composer uses a full chorus including male voices and a baritone soloist in the short work, "In These Stones..." This is the first time I'm aware that Jenkins embraces the SATB structure. What an exceptional inclusion to his body of works! I've picked out a few favorites including Introit, Dies Irae, and In Paradisum. However, Pie Jesu shines as a gorgeous heart felt work that effortlessly soars between child soloist, soprano soloist and chorus. Guaranteed to bring tears to your eyes. Finally, the short work that closes this CD, "In These Stones Horizons Sing", calls to mind Ralph Vaughn Williams and a touch of Glass. As a singer in many choruses, I found myself itching to bring this short piece to the attention of various choral directors. It conveys such a powerful quality, visions of Celtic settings arise in my mind. If you are a choral singer, I assure you, you will find something to inspire you. Enjoy Requiem and look into Jenkins other works as well. You won't be sorry.
Karl Jenkins: Requiem - an eclectic requiem for the 21st Centuray.......2007-01-11
Incorporating elements of World Music (Japanese Haiku), and hints of Arvo Part, Philip Glass and Chill-out Pop, this Requiem Mass for vocal soloists, large choir and full orchestra is a moving, dazzeling masterpiece.
My only reservation about this recording is that, despite being conducted by the composer, the choir and orchestera lack the rythmic intensity and fresh enthusiasm I have heard in a live performance. (Victoria Philharmonic Choral Society)
Great to me.......2007-01-09
I was driving in the country on a beautiful day and heard this CD on a local NPR station. In fact, everyone in our vehicle enjoyed the music very much.I then(upon it's completion) heard this CD reviewed where it was ripped by an NPR panel of music critics. I would recommend it for anyone who isn't a fan of the atonal or complicated music NPR reviewers seem to love. But then what do I know.
Karl Jenkins: Requiem.......2006-11-10
This entire CD is absolutely amazing. The recording is excellent quality and the music definitely reflects Karl Jenkins' unique style. The musicians performing this music are very talented. This CD came with a booklet with the lyrics in it that I could follow and it had English translations. The unique part of this particular requiem was Jenkins' ability to write lyrics in numerous languages including Latin, Japanese (true Haiku!), and Welsh (Jenkins' native language).
I initially got hooked to Jenkins' music when I obtained 'The Essential Collection' with diamond music on 'DeBeers' TV commercials. The music on this CD is definitely deeper in style. He wrote this music from his heart. I have listened to the Requiem many times.

Family music bonding.......2006-07-18
My two boys (age 2 and 7) LOVE this CD. We play it almost on a daily basis and they dance around all over the house to it. After a year, it still has this effect to them. Their favorite track is the 2nd one. I rarely get to listen to the whole CD through before they are jumping around asking for "TRACK 2! TRACK 2!"
This is by far my (our) favorite Putumayo compilation!
A cocktail party for the ear.......2006-06-14
I received this CD as a gift from my younger sister&I STILL enjoy it.It's worth every listen.
This CD kicked off Putumayo's Lounge series, giving it an auspicious start. There are tracks I enjoy more than others, but it isn't a weak album;there aren't fillers. The best tracks are those by Pink Martini,Nicola Conte,Jasmon,Mo'Horizons,Gotan Project,Hamid Baroudi,Montefiori Cocktail,Arling&Cameron, and Blue Asia.Mau Mau&Dissidenten aren't my favorites;as you can see,99% of the CD is pure perfection.
The music uses a variety of styles.Nicola Conte,Jasmon,as well as Arling&Cameron use Bollywood as inspiration."Shiva's Daughters" is loveably cheesy.Hamid Baroudi&Blue Asia make haunting Middle Eastern melodies.Mo'Horizons&Gotan Project have more Latin flavors.Montefiori Cocktail turns a Brazilian bossa nova tune into kitschy bliss.Pink Martini from Portland,Oregon (being from Oregon,I'm proud of them)gives a nod to chanson.
This CD is intoxicating;it's a musical margarita.
Great CD for Variety and Fun Listening.......2006-05-25
I have had this CD for a while and I really enjoy it. I actually play it quietly in the background when I teach Pilates and the class LOVES it....every time I use it at least one person comments on my "great" music...I always share the title with them. Great music is meant to be shared!!
Definitely recommend.......2005-09-02
Putamayo always puts out great albums, and this one has a great beat, especially good in the background when you have people over.
Great music.......2005-04-17
Putumayo's "World Lounge" had only one drawback, as does their other CDs, and that's that it's too short. This CD spans around an hour, with 11 songs, and I think that's way too short for a compililation like this. That aside, this is a great CD, filled with some of the biggest stars and Hits of Europe and Asia. If you're not a fan of HouseBeats or Techno, I don't recommend you purchase this. If, however, you are, then buy away!

A lovely work notable for both its cohesiveness and its aural richness, Two Horizons likely stands as the most broadly appealing solo disc (now numbering five) yet released by Clannad vocalist Moya (aka Máire) Brennan, the oft-overshadowed elder sibling of Enya. Brennan uses a mythic tale involving a much-traveled harp (a totem for all things virtuous) as the disc's thematic center, yet it is the recording's composite sound--resonant, sumptuous, never quite overblown--that inspires repeated listenings. Brennan, who takes several turns on harp, explores a satisfying middle ground between mod and medieval, blending traditional Irish instrumentation with understated electronics and, on occasion, gently propulsive rhythms (akin to what you might hear from Dido), then adorning the whole with a gossamer New Age veil. The effect, as displayed in transitions throughout the disc (such as the shift from the dreamy "Is It Now" to the techno-spiced "Mothers of the Desert"), can be mesmerizing. Like morphing clouds in an expansive sky, the disc's 15 core tracks float by in an enchanting, atmospheric procession, with no jarring disruptions (other than a tacked-on club remix at the disc's conclusion) to break the spell. --Terry Wood

nicely done.......2007-05-15
the musice is beautiful but each track is simmarly composed they do not have very much of a verience
One of her best.......2007-05-14
I think this is one of Moya (Maire) Brennan's best efforts. I liked or loved nearly every song (not true with many of her other cds). I also bought copies for my mother and a friend. This is truly soothing music yet the songs each have substance and a real individuality. If you're a fan of hers, you'll really love this cd.
Two Horizons.......2007-04-04
Very enjoyable music and lyrics....close to her sister's (Enya) music. Very happy with the CD
Two Horizions, Music, Irish.......2007-01-16
A very nice collection of Irish music. A beautiful voice and nice arrangements.
If it weren't for that dance mix at the end..........2006-11-14
There's quite a bit here that will appeal to fans of Maire's and Enya's works. Imagine a combination of Enya vocals with a little bit of Moya's previous folkier sound (as Maire), a healthy dose of heavily processed drumbeats, and add a touch of Loreena McKennit. That's a good approximation of Two Horizons.
The album is remarkably cohesive, especially given the musical involvement of over 25 of Moya's closest friends. Lush voices and pads provide consistent backing for Moya's Enya-esque vocals, as well as harp (played by Moya) and string solos with obvious Celtic influence. The very notable departure from the Enya stereotype is the percussion. A combination of world percussion and traditional rock beats, given a unique character through heavy processing, usually blend in quite well. There are a few counterexamples, such as Mothers of the Desert, in which the kick drum is a little too much. The River is probably the best, and most representative track - I advise sampling it if you're on the fence about getting this album.
Two Horizons doesn't have any really great tracks - however, none are really dissapointing (save the final "bonus" track, which is a dance remix - it does a pretty good job of ruining the album's vibe - I'm not sure if the current version of this album still has it, though). If you want a solid album that you can put on and not have to worry about skipping any tracks, this one could be for you. Of course, for Brennan-family fans, it's a must-have.

Customer Reviews:
This is a MUST for anyone who enjoys classical music ... .......2006-06-07
...BUT not if you take it SO seriously that you have lost your sense of humor.
Peter Schickele (with whom I am occasionally confused - we apparently look alike!) - has got to be one of my all-time favorite composers. When I was in graduate school, I took considerable abuse from my fellow music lovers for actually having MORE albums by P.D.Q Bach than by J. S. Bach (though I think it was barely a one-point margin, really...)
But the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" approach to Beethoven's 5th symphony is not only a musical analysis of the piece as it is being played, but a slam on the constant "blah-blah-blah" that one hears during ANY sports event.
"My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" has got to be my all-time favorite spoof of the overly pompous "art song" oratorio. I've encouraged one of my colleagues (who directs the college chorale where I teach) to include it in a program, to no avail. One of these days, I'll put my money where my mouth is - and buy sheet music for the entire chorale.
This is one of only two albums that I have in (a) vinyl, (b) tape, and (c) CD format. That should be some indication of how very, very special I believe this to be. [The other, for those who are interested, is Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."]
This has been around for years, and there's a good reason. Schickele is not only funny when he wants to be, but a supremely accomplished composer and musician, with dozens and dozens of serious musical scores to his credit as well.
PDQ Bach -- The Spike Jones of Classical Music.......2006-03-16
For the classical music lover, this is an amazing spoof. For those who do not know classical music well, this is still highly entertaining.
Recaptured (Twisted) Youth.......2003-03-31
My friend and I saw the good Prof. Schickele here in Pasadena last night (March 29th-- AND the conductor of the Pasadena Symphony is Jorge Meister!)-- and the last number on the program was the WONDERFUL "The Seasonings"-- I had a very hard time even after all these years of first hearing this on a REAL record of not singing along with every little tune!!! This piece last night, being sung by singers whom I do not doubt were not even born when I first heard a recording of it, were as good as the ones I remember from my decadent youth on the original recording. Buy this C.D. if only for this piece!
I store it in the CD changer in my car........2002-10-06
My favorite single line of music from this is from "The Unbegun Symphony". Who would think to combine "You are my sunshine", a
tune I have always thought of as sappy sweet, played on violins,
with a background of horns, (I don't know what piece, but it
makes me thing of something noble and civilized) making it a
definitive statement of a benevolent sense of life.
PDQ Bach's other works are delighfully absurd, as are Peter
Schickele's commentaries. (Well I have a new set of friends now)
New Horizons in Music Appreciation Indeed..........2002-08-08
It was while sitting in Music Appreciation in college that I was first introduced to the work of P.D.Q. Bach, specifically the track "New Horizons in Music Appreciation: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony," in which Professor Peter Schickele and Robert Dennis serve as the announcers for a spirited game involving the first movement of that particular work. Not only was it funny ("He's playing a cadenza! He's out of his mind! He thinks its an oboe concerto!") it was also more informative than the professor ("I get the feeling we are going to hear a lot of that four note motif, Bob").
One of the things about P.D.Q. Bach is that the more I learned about classical music the funnier I found it. Yes, I have enough memories of my mother insisting on playing the Texaco Opera quiz throughout the house on a Saturday afternoon to appreciate why "What's my Melodic Line?" and its exploration of the mysteries of the Baroque is funny, but it was not until I saw "Amadeus" and listened to "The Marriage of Figaro" that I understood why the recitatias in the Cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" were hysterical (I was tempted to share this story of Iphigenia with my Classical Mythology class, but given their tentativeness to explore Euripides I did not think it wise to have them get neck deep in Schickele). Then again, the Madrigal "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" really needs no explanation, so there is something for everybody here, no matter what you level of understanding of classical music.
In discussing the works of P.D.Q. Bach with others it becomes clear that you can no more put together an idea collection of his "best" work than you can for lesser composers like Mozart or Beethoven. But you are certainly going to find a few old favorites and maybe one or two pieces that you have hitherto managed to avoid.
Now, if we can only get a University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople t-shirt...

As anyone who's heard their exuberant first album will tell you, Lemon Jelly are no ordinary chill-out act. Here, the eccentric duo present their second full-length outing, Lost Horizons, and it's every bit as good as their acclaimed debut, Lemonjelly.ky. Inhabiting a world of almost limitless playfulness, Nick Franglen and Fred Deakin make the sort of brassy, beautiful downtempo music that leaves the listener desperately trying to suppress a goofy grin. You see, Lost Horizons is that rarest of things: a focused, humorous, and exciting chill-out album that stands up to repeat listening. Often, this kind of tongue-in-cheek chillage can sound dull and contrived (or, worse, sickly and overbearing), but Lost Horizons is anything but tedious. It bristles with shimmering, sunny instrumentation (jaunty acoustic guitars, skippy beats, tinkling pianos, oh-so-English brass band fanfares--even the odd harp), while quirky, oddball samples lurk 'round every turn ("Nice Weather for Ducks," for example, is a country-funk shakedown based on a sample from a nursery rhyme). From the percussive space jazz of "Return to Patagonia" to the seductive, sleepy closer, "Curse of Ka'zar," Lost Horizons doesn't so much glimmer as positively shine. Is it 2002's best downtempo album? Almost certainly. --Matt Anniss

Dreamy, Easy, Politically Incorrect..........2006-05-27
From the artwork, you'll see that this group is not about making you feel perfect, but rather to make you feel, period. It brings many textures, a satisfying freshness and a pleasing state of mind; without being an overbearing or boring experience. They're not afraid to take chances musically, but in a way every song makes one feel confortable enough to keep on listening in either hypnosis or awe... All the ducks are swiming in the water, la la la la la la... :)
Uh Let's See I would say Interesting............2006-05-24
I bought this cd because of one song I heard on Radio Free Virgin. It's a very interesting cd. I would listen to this on like a long drive, during a hot bath, or if I was day dreaming. It gets your imagination going for sure and takes you off to another world. If you have heard at least one song and liked it you most likely will enjoy the rest too, even though they are quite different from each other.

A great player can give meaning and substance even to lightweight miniatures. Andsnes says that his musical "horizon," at first limited to "big, important" music, opened to the appreciation of the short "salon" pieces and arrangements assembled on this record only as he got older, though they had accompanied him since childhood. The program features original compositions and transcriptions, including many familiar favorites. They span several centuries and come from every corner of Europe. Andsnes' virtuosity is breath-taking, his tone is beautiful, and his legato sings regardless of the accompanying texture. Above all, he captures every style, idiom, and mood. Andsnes' phrasing, dynamics, and liberties are balanced and poised, and his love for the music speaks through every note. Listeners will choose their own favorites among these 22 very different pieces, but surely no one will be able to resist Gieseking's spectacular arrangement of Richard Strauss' "Serenade," which adds torrents of notes to the virtuosic piano part and incorporates the vocal line as well. The fleetness and clarity of the Chopin "Impromptu" here never touches the ground, while Ibert's "Little White Donkey" has charm and delicacy and Liszt's "Liebestraum" resounds with ardent passion. Andsnes' brilliant, captivating performance will induce smiles of admiration and pleasure as well as a new respect for this versatile and colorful repertoire. --Edith Eisler

Delightful and energetic performance.......2007-03-11
I like the way he made the songs come to life. They were filled with energy and feelings.
World Class Musician.......2007-02-07
Leif Ove Andsnes is an incredible artist on the piano and his talents are showcased in this cd. His artistry has an extensive range as exhibited in the diversity of this repertoire. This is classical piano at its best.
22 Bravos.......2007-01-22
22 piano encores some familiar most not, at least to me, played with manly beauty by Leif Ove Andsnes. A treasure chest. A horizon expanding recording. 22 Bravos
You'll stand and shout "encore!".......2007-01-03
The appearance of this disk on many Best of 2006 lists came as no surprise. I heard Andsnes perform several of these selections in Chicago and Kalamazoo early in the year, and in Michigan even got a sampler CD of "Horizons" as we left the recital that whetted my appetite. Everything that makes Andsnes' playing compelling is here, but listen in particular for how, in so many of the pieces, he's able to bring out the left hand that are clearly not just microphone/recording studio wizardry. A true gem.

Album Description
Guitar virtuoso Luca Turilli, best known for his work as lead guitarist, co-composer and co-founder in film score metal band Rhapsody, has presented us with his new band: Luca Turilli's Dreamquest. Not wishing this to be viewed just as a side project, Luca asserts that Dreamquest is an additional outlet for the abundance of overflowing musical ideas of this prolific composer. Fear not Rhapsody fans, Dreamquest, while an entirely separate band, will not interfere with Rhapsody's progress. The debut album, Lost Horizons introduces a new style and technique to Luca's already mighty repertoire, enriched by modern elements: new metal, opera, techno-electronic music and gothic-symphonic atmospheres.
Luca Turilli's Dreamquest is the fulfillment of a dream that Luca has had in mind for many years and he is looking forward to the opportunity to perform Dreamquest material in a live forum as soon as possible. The music on Lost Horizons combines powerful metal instrumentation with angelic, operatic, female vocals to create a sound that might best be described as 'Symphonic Electro-Metal'. The first single Virus, is a prime example of the majestic musical flavour that Dreamquest is made of, while the operatic Sospiro Divino showcases the boundless possibilities presented by this exciting new band. Although favourable comparisons to popular acts are inevitable, make no mistake: Luca Turilli's Dreamquest is a fresh and unique experience

"Life's what you make of it - grasp it!".......2007-03-04
That's from track 10, and, as far as I'm concerned, one way to grasp life is to listen to music such as this. Usually I listen to a new CD for about two weeks before deciding on a rating. Two days were all it took for this one! If you've read my other reviews you know that I'm a big fan of the female operatic voice combined with power metal. It is always nice to find something new in this genre that sounds good, and this sounds very good. It's not quite Nightwish or After Forever, but it is way up there and easily in my five star range.
I'm not crazy about Turilli's Rhapsody works; they are OK I guess but not something I would rave about. What he has done here is completely different and I am raving about it. The lyrics are much more poetic, the melodies more varied, and most of all, there is the vocalist Myst, which is obviously short for mystery. All the CD insert says is "Myst - voice." There is no other information, no picture, nothing. Whoever she is, she has a beautiful voice which can be powerful or moderate or soft with an impressive range. Apparently some people think she is Floor from After Forever but it does not sound like her to me.
All 13 tracks are very listenable. The only one I have a little trouble with is number seven, where Myst's voice is modified electronically, which to me is blasphemy. However it is only done in short sections so I still listen to it. My favorite track is nine, which has one of the most powerful reprises anywhere. The song blasts off with it and then finishes by repeating it three times, with the middle one being mostly a cappella. Very effective indeed!
One more thing concerning the ratings so far on this item. There are mostly fours and fives and then two with only one star. That proves my theory that beauty is entirely in the ear of the beholder. I'm curious to know if the two people who consider this CD junk are fans of Nightwish, After Forever or Epica. If they are not, I wish they would just leave it alone. I could go rate a bunch of rap CD's with one star also, but what good would that do anyone? (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)
Not a kid, just don't have my own Amazon account........2007-03-02
First thing I must say about this album is.. The singer's range is just amazing, and her voice is quite beautiful.
Now, I'll admit this, I'm not a Rhapsody fan and I've never listened to Luca Turilli's solo project. But for some reason I just HAD to get this album, and I'm glad I did.
The opening song Virus is an excellent opener, and my favorite song on this album. While I completely enjoy this album, I do grudgingly have little to say about it because, while it is excellent it just doesn't grab me (other than the singers voice.)
Over-all, if you enjoy metal or just good music I'd recommend getting this album.
listen to the biggest luca fan ever.......2007-02-26
seriously I worship luca but this release is failure. No double bass. No speed. No Luca solos. Just listen to Prophet of the last eclipse if you want to be inspired. This album i have listened to countless times but i just cant recommend it to anyone.
WOW!.......2007-02-22
i cant think of words to describe this.. no words have been invented to describe how amazing this is..
im not going to spend alot of time describing each track. just go out and buy this masterpiece..luca turillis genious shines through again.. i cant help but forget whats going on around me when i put this on.
This goes great with my goth rock collection.......2007-01-10
No longer power metal..like it better than alot of my goth rock. Powerful, catchy, fun..cool but defintely goth rock. Luca just don't get lazy.

opening titles music?.......2006-02-08
Hi.
Does anyone know what is the music from the opening titles of the movie? It is before the song Omiya starts. It is not included in the CD and i'd like to know the title.
Great Indian Mystery, well-done.......2005-07-16
This is a very nice album for esoteric enthusiasts to add to their Indian mix.
I love Indian Music.......2005-07-05
I love the movie Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Indira Varhma and Sarita Chowdery are very, very beautiful women. And the music in the movie was hott! Especially the song at Princess Tara's wedding where everyone is dancing and Maya is serving the guests in her beautiful red sari. It had a cool beat and I felt like dancing, Indian style!
Kama Sutra = Beautiful Movie, Beautiful Music.......2005-06-27
Love the movie...cinematography is wonderful, a truely beautiful movie, everything is a feast for the eyes. The soundtrack is just as good, perfect blend of exotic music that can be enjoyed lounging around or even bellydanced to.
Captivating!!!!.......2003-09-05
The songs are sensual, calming, meditative and spiritual. If you appreciate different cultures, this album is for you. Whenever i play this album i turn all the lights out, and light candles, burn incense and meditate. I highly recommend this album with monsoon wedding soundtrack. Everyone i know loves this album. Get it.

time has definitely told..........2007-04-24
when i bought this album three years ago, i still regarded SC3 as a kind of side-project for Trey Spruance, interesting but not quite up there with Mr Bungle. unlike the previous three SC3 albums however, this album began with the premise of containing performances by 7 different "satellite bands"; as though Secret Chiefs 3 had experienced a creative splintering into multiple personalities, all different yet all still SC3.
these seven bands (one band doesn't appear on the album; it is only inferred by its inclusion in the album's artwork) range from middle-eastern and indian music to surf; from beautfully cinematic orchestration to electronic and even (although relatively sparingly) some very brutal death metal.
there is often some overlap in genre, but it doesn't seem to be quite as deliberate or (dare i say) self-concious as some Bungle. on a personal note i grow more and more in love with this music each time i listen. it is a quantum leap from their previous effort "Book M", which itself was no average piece of work.
i've been chewing on this album for almost three years now, and i'm still not ready to swallow, let alone digest it. and as i wait with bated breath for the forthcoming "Book Of Souls", it begins to dawn on me that what seemed to be Spruance's "side-project" (my assumption, not his) has already begun to eclipse its more famous sibling. Bungle may be a more instant sugar rush of ear candy, but SC3 on "Book Of Horizons" presents a smorgasbord of sounds, melodies and atmospheres.
"Book Of Horizons" is an absolute diamond.
Bad starting point here, though a few amazing highlights make it pursuable.......2007-04-18
The always interesting Secret Chiefs 3 still hold a marvelous musicality with some of the more ambitious fused experimentation around, but this album only dabbles in brilliance, instead choosing to wallow in their arty exercises while contradicting compositional talents. While most of the album feels strangely routine and placid for a collective that is usually anything but, there are still too many outstanding parts in an unfulfilled whole to give a thumbs down. At best, their sound evokes a modern day progressive drive, one that can play death metal to Indian music within the bat of an eyelash. In those moments the band solidifies their cult status, even on relatively mediocre releases like this despite an onslaught of the fairly uninspired B-sided work. Tainted with overindulgence of the ungratified type, too many elevator-ready ditties settle into lethargy while pretending to offer some kind of musical culture, and too much amateur knob-twiddling sonically condescends a band anyone really interested in will come to expect much more of. Still, a mediocre release from an outstanding band still equals a decent album.
Inspired me to do 17 push-ups.......2006-10-26
If the movie "Conan the Barbarian" were 10 times better, which is impossible, this album would be the soundtrack to it. When I listen to this album, whatever the name of it is i forget, but it inspires me to achieve great acts of strength and barbarian-like athletic prowessness. Yesterday I listened to it and I punched my dad right in the belly. He didn't care though, because he was listening to it when i punched him and his abs were real tight as a result. Today at work I played it in the office at a pleasent office-appropriate volume and everybody made exceptional progress on the projects they were working on. This made the boss and our clients very happy. I was enjoying this album on my way to the store not too long ago, and i was speeding because i'm an awesome driver and i had on my super-rad spandex, and a police officer pulled me over. when he approached the car and heard the music, which was blasting out of the speakers, he wrote me about ten tickets and then told me to go to court and he'll drop most of the charges. He even apologized because it was overly apparent how awesome i was (spandex and all) and that he couldn't help writing all those tickets. That all kind of upset me so i stopped listening to this album for a few days. But then I listened to it again and ended up doing all kinds of variations of push-ups. Now i'm pumped up and all the ladies want a piece of this. Buy this album a couple of times, because your liable to smash it once or twice out of feeling that it's too radical for this dimension.
A successful experiment.......2006-08-25
Secret Chiefs 3 is a side project of guitarist Trey Spruance, best known for his work with Mr. Bungle. I have heard from some that this album is a sort of continuation of Mr. Bungle's swansong album California, though I don't think that's fair. The two albums do share some stylistic similarities, but BOH is much more eclectic and ambitious. I personally would compare it to some of John Zorn's works. The disc itself is something of an extremely complex concept album revolving around ancient religious mysticism and things of that nature. The music contained here is actually performed by a collection of six bands (Ishraqiyun, Forms, Traditionalists, Ur, Electromagnetic Azoth, and Holy Vehm), all of which are headed by Spruance. Though most of the music has an Indian or Middle Eastern vibe to it, there is a very noticeable contrast between the styles of every few tracks, changing from jazz to surf to techno to grandiose orchestral arrangements to chaotic grindcore that rivals some of the heaviest stuff around. It sounds like a bit much to digest, but these guys mange to make it accessible enough for anyone to get into it.
The first two tracks contain a lush, upbeat Indian melody, becoming almost danceable in places. After these comes the first of a pair of unfortunate filler tracks. "The Indestructible Drop", which is basically 30 seconds of nothing followed by a neat melody in the last 10 seconds or so. Next up is "Exterminating Angel", which is the first grind track. The drums stand out as particularly excellent, no surprise as they are played by John Merriman, who normally struts his stuff with the excellent Cephalic Carnage. Throughout the track some very eerie screams are provided by Youri Raymond of Unhuman. "On the Wings of Haoma" almost sounds like it could be a track from California. "Book T: Exodus" is one of a few orchestral pieces, which would not be out of place among the works of Ennio Morricone. "Hypostasis of the Archons" is another grindcore track, just as frenzied as the one before. "DJ Revisionist" starts off strong but halfway through it becomes mostly silent with random noises thrown in, making this the second track I always find myself skipping. Closing track "Welcome To The Theatron Animatronique" sounds like something Danny Elfman might do for a Tim Burton movie.
Bottom line: When experimental music fails it can be an absolute chore to sit through. Thankfully, these guys pull it off, creating a sound that is both unique and fun to listen to (though the metal tracks might put some off). My lame song descriptions really don't do the music justice; it really has to be heard to be believed. I recommend this for fans of John Zorn or Mr. Bungle, as well as anyone who doesn't mind a little adventure in their music.
Some good tracks, but a little lacking in philosophy.......2006-07-27
I am a fan of this disc and this band, though this particular output leaves me a little unfulfilled. It took me several listens for me to really nail it down, and I think it has something to do with the fact that Secret Chiefs 3 sounds not like one band but several, playing through various phases of influences, from Ennio Morricone to grind metal. No doubt this was the effect they were going for, but the pure genius of an album like Second Grand Constitution, which is still their masterpiece in my regard, was that they still used all the same influences, but WITHIN tracks rather than AMONG tracks.
The distinction here is that the most amazing Secret Chiefs 3 was when they mixed all of their various influences into each track rather than separate things into several tracks. Tracks like Book T: Exodus are wonderful work, as well as The Own in Daylight, and The Exile has the atmosphere of those strangely sentimental and almost misty-eyed moments that Leone could somehow pull out of his spaghetti westerns. I do like grindcore tracks like Hypostasis of the Archons, but they feel a little too isolated purist rather than genius hybrid.
Overall, a worthwhile CD that will peak your interest at its best moments, but as a whole not satisfying except in an anthologic fashion.

This album offers 12 enlightening cover versions of Western pop tunes, as performed by artists from places like France, Spain, South Africa, Germany, and Mali. It's always instructive to glimpse how one culture's music is perceived by another, whether through a funhouse mirror, from under a microscope, or even face-to-face. The performances gathered here range from misguided (Albert Pla's bizarre Spanish language take on Lou Reed's "Take A Walk On The Wild Side") to hilarious (Fatal Mambo's salsa interpretation of Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime") to a delightful breath of fresh air (Malian girl group Les Go's version of Hall & Oates' "I Can¹t Go For That"). Nenes' earnest Japanese-language rendition of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" is laced with plangent plucked samisens and is somehow extremely touching. Other attempts are less effective, but at least none of them come across as cynical and all are worth a listen. --Christina Roden

Great collection of covers.......2007-06-24
This is a must have for world music lovers, especially those who have American or British favorites they love to hear in new ways. This is one of my favorite world music CD's and probably the one I listen to the most.
Eye-opening! Definitely worth the money.......2007-01-31
This CD is unlike any other. One culture takes on another's idea of a popular hit, and reinterprets it through their own set of cultural lenses. The result is utterly fascinating. It is a fun listen...but also a study of people, of music, of psychology, of music, of intercultural interaction. Don't miss this one!
The Best of Both Worlds.......2006-11-14
I don't know, maybe it's just because I cut my teeth on world music three and a half years ago with this CD and Putumayo's "Global Soul", which came out at about the same time. I love both of them. "Cover the World" takes a very fresh look at some standards that you may already be familiar with.
As mentioned elsewhere, the two songs by Ladysmith Black Mambazo - "People Get Ready", with Phoebe Snow (originally done by The Impressions), and "Ain't No Sunshine" with Des'ree (originally by Bill Withers) - are alone worth the price of the CD. I played "People Get Ready" over and over when I first got the CD, and still haven't tired of it. Angelique Kidjo puts her own unique spin on the Jimi Hendrix standard "Voodoo Child", as do Les Go ("The Girls") on "I Can't Go For That", originally performed by Hall and Oates. Chris Ardoin and his group Double Clutchin' may give you a new appreciation for zydeco with their rendition of "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher" (originally done by Jackie Wilson), and may even motivate you to check out his brother, Sean Ardoin & Zydekool, as well. Finally, Tukuleur, two brothers from Senegal whose music I cannot locate in the United States with the exception of the one song on this CD, make the song "Afrika (Africa)" (originally by Toto, whom I don't remember) their very own. There are no bad songs on the CD, but those are the best of the lot.
"Cover the World" and "Global Soul" almost single-handedly provided me with the bridge I needed to the wonderful, amazing universe of world music, and they may just do the same for you.
Gets old PDQ!.......2006-07-21
I used to work at a store in the mall, that often circulated several putumayo titles on our sound system which we also sold. We had Cuba, Samba Bossa Nova, Asian Groove, Arabic Groove, Zydeco, World Lounge, African Groove, Euro Lounge, Global Soul, just to name a few! I loved them all, even after listening to them every time I worked for almost a year...except one! Cover the world, drove me up the wall the first few times I heard it. Now, there are a few good songs on here ("Ain't no sunshine", is my fav) but overall, not for long term listening in my opinion. Hearing Asian women sing "No woman no cry" gets flat out annoying after awhile! Would recommend the titles I stated above, over this one.
Fun--but not one of Putomayo's most stellar works....mm.......2006-03-02
Most of the Putomayo I own are CDs I can play over and over. "Cover the World" was interesting the first time around, but I doubt I will be revisiting the collection as often as I do "Celtic Tides" or any of the others with more original works.
Standouts are Kidjo's "Voodoo Child," and the 2 selections by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
