Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums with his brothers, Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980), on which the twentysomething phenomenon was also fully engaged. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do.
Tracks like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and "Burn this Disco Out" not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection--Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend," Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"--further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. This special edition features two magic home demos and entertaining, insightful interviews of producer Quincy Jones and "Rock with You" composer Rod Temperton. --Rickey Wright

Special Edition Problems in the Remastering (Treble Boost).......2007-06-26
Why am I giving this Michael Jackson masterpiece only two stars? I have a serious issue with the remastering -- it's way too bright on my high-end (and otherwise very flat with no tone controls) stereo system. Who the heck maintained the boosted treble? I'm sure this would sound great equalized on an AM radio station, but it's hurting my ears. The sound quality of the original album is remarkably crisp...stinging, in fact.
So, this is just a warning for those expecting the remastering to have corrected the riding-the-treble-gain problem. I recommend those without the usual treble/bass tone controls who still have their hearing avoid this particular release.

Forgot just how good Michael Jackson used to be....this is a favorite blast to the past. Good songs to sing and dance to....makes you smile.
BACK IN THE DAY.......2007-05-14
THIS IS A FUN CD, THAT IN IT'S TIME WAS AND IS SO MUCH FUN TO LISTEN TO. THIS WAS THE MICHAEL JACKSON THAT WAS TALENTED AND HAD SO MUCH TO OFFER. IT IS A GREAT CD.
Jackson's Legacy.......2007-05-02
Long after talk of Michael Jackson's nose, skin colour, Bubbles, etc. this is what he will be remembered for! It puts all todays RnB and Pop to shame. It's as raw, funky and fresh as it was in 1979! One of the greatest and creative albums Ive ever heard, the problem is people seem to skip it and listen to his more successful albums but trust me I have them all this is by far the best! The opening track sets the tone for the album and ITS OFF THE HOOK! I cant say anymore listen and you'll wonder why him and Quincy Jones dont get back together and make people feel Pop music again!!! (ps. Michael plays with milk bottles on the first track he just has born rythme!) GENIUS ALBUM
The legend MJ went solo and dropped this timeless classic...................2007-04-26
Don't get it twisted, Thriller is a better album than Off the Wall. But Off the Wall is his most passionate, consistent and effortless work. Mike came alive when he got the opportunity to do it for dolo. The whole album is a Pop and R & B standard. My favorites are Rock with you(The Shiznit), Off the Wall(The Shiznit), Cant Help It(Classic), Burn this disco out, Get on the Floor, Dont stop till you get enough(Untouchable), Working day and night, It's the falling in love, and Girlfriend. Musically and artistically no one comes close to Mike. Even Biggie said it, "Some nights I perform like Mike - anyone Tyson, Jordan, Jackson, Action". Hopefully, Mike and Quincy Jones will wise up and give the world one more classic.

Not even Dionne Warwick and her mind-reading friends could have predicted that, over the course of two CDs, Destiny's Child would become one of the most successful girl groups on the planet. But successful this Houston trio is, and their sophomore CD shows why. Yes, the lineup changes as often as lead singer Beyoncé's hairstyle, but fun, disposable pop/R&B needn't be rooted in permanence, and DC is mad fun and mad catchy to boot. With the assistance of hitmakers Shek'spere and Kandi Burruss, Destiny's Child trade in effervescent, hip-shaking, finger-wagging, 'you-go-girl, kick-him-to-the-curb' anthems. The Writing's on the Wall is loaded with tracks like "Bills, Bills, Bills," which are suitable both for dancing and as topics on the Ricki Lake Show. The percolating "Bug A Boo" is irresistible, as is the sassy "So Good." To their credit, the girls can slow the pace down, and on the sultry "Temptation" they get to work their considerable chops to nice effect. But as sales and chart figures have shown, Destiny's Child are at their best when they are laying down the law to some trifling man, and/or working their own groove thang. Work it they do on this somewhat formulaic but ultimately irresistible effort. --Amy Linden

Stardom For Beyonce Was Born .......2007-03-09
What can I say about this CD is that the album is excellent. There really isn't anything bad I can say about this is that I wish Beyonce could've shared the mic a little more with the other members, and maybe slow down on the male-bashing. In all honesty, they do need it at times if the show trifling behavior. The standout tracks would be "Say My Name", "Hey Ladies", "Temptations", "Now That Your Gone", and "Bills, Bills, Bills". This will forever be a classic and DC's best album. "Survivor was a horrible follow-up.

Destination Stardome!.......2006-11-06
Few People would have thought that the band with the quite modest debut would be able to make such a great second album and eventually become one of the most succesful girl-groups of all time. "The Writing's on the Wall" would have countless of hits and the album itself would eventually sell 12 million copies and spend 99 consecutive weeks on the Billboard album charts (that's about 2 years). With new producers, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Missy Elliott among others, the sound would also change and they would find their true identity. There would be some ballads, but the hitsingles would be uptempo songs with female attitute, something that contributed to their rise of fame. Unfortunately there would also be changes in the lineup, LeToya and LaTavia who were both childhood friends with Beyonce and Kelly felt they were maltreated by manager Matthew Knowles (Beyonce's Father) and left the band, they appeared on the recording but not in the videos. Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams joined instead, but Franklin's visit would be shortlived also. The album however is very strong, uptempo's like "Bills Bills Bills" "Bug A Boo" "Jumpin' Jumpin" and "Say My Name" were all big hits and with that Destiny's Child both had good critital acclaim and a great fan base. Album songs like uptempo "So Good" and slow pace/ballads "Confession" and "Temptation" are not bad either, towards the end there's a few too many songs though, 12 songs instead of 16 would have been better. The end result is good, Destiny's Child had got superstatus with a own sound and the album was more even the their debut, their upcoming 2 albums would also be good before a split-up was inevitable. 4 stars.
This album was their destiny!.......2006-10-21
Beyonce and company created a classic album with `Writings on the Wall', arguably the best Destiny's Child album period. With hit after hit, it was this album that made Destiny's Child a household name. Sure, `No, no, no' was great, but can you remember any other track off their ill-fated debut? I can't, but I can sure remember just about every track off this album. Actually just today (don't tell my wife this is so embarrassing) but I was driving to lunch when I heard `Bug A Boo' come on the radio (probably my favorite Destiny's Child song ever) and I just started singing with Beyonce, every word flooding back into my mind. So freaking catchy! Anyways, the album is great, from hit club bangers like `Jumpin, Jumpin' and `Bills, Bills, Bills' to classic slow jams like `Stay' and `Temptation' (sultry) and then my personal favorites `Bug A Boo' and probably their biggest hit `Say My Name' Destiny's Child will forever be remembered for this brilliant sophomore album. It's too bad that Michelle wasn't a part of this since I really like her talent...it's just that Destiny's Child will never be able to reach the greatness they experienced with this album.
Destiny's Child will leave you speechless.........2006-09-07
Beyonce, Letoya, Kelly, and Latavia grabbed the music industry in a chokehold and squeezed the air out with this solid sophomore album. This was the last album we saw with the "original" memebers of Destiny's Child (today just Kelly, Michelle, and Beyonce) and redefined 'girl groups' in R&B forever.
This album was primarily based on the do's and don't of relationships. These women covered everything from cheating, to paying bills, bugging your mate to death, jumpin' off in the club, giving into temptation, confessions on infidelity, and so much more. There was so much substance to the album that it put Destiny's Child on the map, unfortunately we saw roster changes for 8 months straight (but that didn't stop their reign, it only made them stronger....hence "Survivor"..)
Standout tracks: Confessions, Temptation, So Good, If You Leave Her, Say My Name, and Hey Ladies. Phenomenal work!

Pink Floyd's 1979 double album The Wall was that strangest of beasts: a concept album, driven by a tortured rock-star protagonist, so obtusely personal it sometimes bordered on the inscrutable. But history was kind to the Roger Waters-spawned epic; when the communist bloc crumbled in 1989, taking the symbolic Berlin Wall with it, it inspired the ex-Floyd bassist and singer to frame his most ambitious work as another familiar tortured-rock-star conceit: the all-star benefit-concert TV broadcast. The shifting tides of history have undermined much of this remastered, double-disc soundtrack's momentous context, leaving behind a larger-than-life spectacle that, depending on one's viewpoint, could represent rock's most overarching populism--or the beginning of the end. Still, the star-heavy concept yields some unexpected surprises, from the Scorpions' bracing opening blast through haunting reinventions of "Mother" (Sinead O'Connor) and "Goodbye Blue Sky" (Joni Mitchell)--performances that blunt the oft-suspect misogyny of Waters's sprawling tale. Bryan Adams injects some vocal fire into "Empty Spaces" and "Young Lust," but by the time Waters, company, a massed German orchestra, choir, and the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Union reach the album's crescendos the event has gone so far over the top that it seems like nothing short of a neo-operatic Andrew Lloyd Webber wet dream. --Jerry McCulley

one of the worst live cds.......2007-05-10
How can anyone even give this thing one star? ever heard of Live in the FLesh? one of the best live cd's EVER? from anyone? this thing flat blows, you can hardly hear it, it sounds like it was recorded from some bootlegger in the back row. and none of the songs mesh for beans. just a flat out waste of payola. The Flesh, the one and only. waiting for the new tours output of a cd/dvd hope its as good as FLesh but I dunno Doyle pretty much about stole the show in FLesh and he is not playing guitar on current tour. but the ladies are singing backup again so hoping for the best!
Roger at his finest work.......2007-03-09
First about the video then about the CD:
I first saw this video about three months ago when i found it at my local CD/Video bargain place for a buck! I was blown away at the superb way this work, already a master in itself was presented for the show. I kinda wish i would of seen this version (the stage production) first before i saw the movie. the live stage production was easier to follow. i love the music of course and had to have the CD. All of the different artist doing the songs from the best album ever. All of the performances are outstanding!!!! It all fits like a good ole pair of your favorite comfy worn jeans. Buy this CD and the DVD you will be amazed. PS: I loved it so much i purchased the DVD right here on Amazon for a Christmas gift to my dearest friends.
Was at the show and the DVD is a good reproduction.......2006-06-23
While nothing will ever come close to the experience of being there, the DVD did a pretty good job of capturing the moment. As snap shot in history, the summer of 1990. The Belin wall had just come down the previous November. On July 1st, for the first time since the wall went up, East and West Belin could freely cross the "Wall", Check Point Charlie was out of a job. This concert took place in Potsdam Platz, only months earlier, this was no man's land. You could be shot for being there. On this night in July, the world was finally at peace (Iraq would invade Kuwait two weeks later), I was standing in a crowd with Germans, English, French and countless other nationalities. We were all there taking in one of he greatest stages ever contructed for a concert. Roger Waters did it proud, to compare it to Pink Floyd's the Wall conerts (which I saw in Nassua Colisium in 1979) would be unfair. This concert was more than just the music and show, it was about a time in history. "Tear Down The Wall!!" it was already coming down. To watch the DVD, brings these memories streaming back and in these troubled times, is comforting to know that at one time peace was achieved.
A miss version of The Wall without Pink Floyd.......2005-12-02
Roger Waters' The Wall in Berlin was released in September of 1990.
This performance of The Wall was first recorded on July 21, 1990 and I heard the original radio broadcast.
Although this is a live album, portions of it were taken from a re-do of the show and the previous night's dress rehearsal. The original radio broadcast had the microphones all messing up and the power going out during The Thin Ice and Mother.
Initially, in a July, 1989 radio interview, Roger initially thought of having ex-bandmates David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright play with him. Even David went through lawyers to get the OK to do it when asked at the Knebworth 1990 show backstage but then Roger shot down his ex-bandmates' offer in early July(hypocritical of Roger at the time). Then, Roger tried to get artists like Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and Peter Gabriel(this would have been superb) for the performance. Unfortunately, those artists were either unavailable or wanted money so in the end he got some good artists(The Scorpions(whom were excellent on In the Flesh), Joni Mitchell(pretty good on Goodbye Blue Sky), Bryan Adams(his Young Lust was good), Paul Carrack(he did Hey You very well)) and some very bad artists(Van Morrison and The Band(they destroyed David Gilmour's parts on Comfortably Numb), Cyndi Lauper(her duetting with Roger on Another Brick in the Wall(pt. 2) was atrocious), Ute Lemper(tolerable on The Thin Ice but Mariah Carey-esquely annoying on The Trial), Sinead O' Connor(awful here but ironically was good on Rick Wright's Broken China) and Jerry Hall(her as the groupie was unnecessary)) for the performance.
Whilst original Wall show stalwarts Snowy White and Peter Wood plus Andy Fairweather-Low and Graham Broad were good, Rick DiFonso desecrated David Gilmour's solos thinking he was Eddie Van Halen.
Fortunately, Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980 does great live justice to The Wall as it is the classic Floyd lineup performing The Wall(and there are videos filmed from those shows). If I were you, I'd spend my money on Is There Anybody Out There?.
Grab The Wall in Berlin ONLY if you are a collector.
It's Not Pink Floyd But It's The Next Best Thing.......2005-02-10
Not having been a big Roger Waters fan, this DVD changed my whole attitude and opinion of Roger Waters. This DVD/CD may not be Pink Floyd, but it sure is the next best thing. I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. I had viewed Roger Waters as a whining, moaning, groaning, and complaining child who just wanted to have something to cry about. After seeing this DVD, that all changed. He was so cool, calm, and collected in this DVD and so relaxed. I was impressed with the way he shared the spotlight with other musicians and didn't cop an attitude by self-centeredness, selfishness, and egotism. I think he had the idea of performing this version of The Wall the same way Pink Floyd did the live version of The Wall. It was superbly done. All the musicians were superb especially Cyndi Lauper and Bryan Adams. You can always tell Cyndi even if you don't hear her because of her eccentricities. If you're not a Roger Waters fan or if you have doubts about him, check out The Wall: Live In Berlin and his other live album In The Flesh. I can guarantee you will have a change of heart. My friend gave me a copy of this DVD and after seeing it, I was totally blown away by the performance and came away with a different attitude toward Roger Waters. I was so impressed with this DVD/CD and the In The Flesh DVD I had to order the CDs. I do not regret it for a minute. I would highly recommend both these albums for any Pink Floyd or Roger Waters fan. You won't regret it!

Off the Wall made music history. Not only was it the release that signaled the arrival of Michael Jackson as a major talent outside the Jackson Five, it was the first record by a solo artist to contain four Top 10 hits. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," "Off the Wall," and "She's out of My Life" were essential listening in the late '70s and early '80s. The release also contains the kinetic "Working Day and Night" and "Burn This Disco Out." Paul McCartney contributes "Girlfriend." Thanks to Quincy Jones's production, it was still all about the music back then. The artistry Jackson exhibited on Off the Wall still amazes. Avoiding the shallow excesses of most of the period's disco, Jackson's dance rhythms here are made all the more powerful by Jackson's vocal restraint. --Steve Gdula

the neptunes and timbaland have always tried to recreate the melodically rhythmic percussion of don't stop till you get enough and working day and night, you hear it all over today's r&b and hip hop with artists like omarion, pharell, justin timberlake, beyonce etc. Also, the melodic smoothness in the slower songs is what inspired those like ne yo, usher, mary j. blige and the list goes on

Michael Jackson's 1979 solo debut Off The Wall stands today as Michael Jackson at his rawest and most sincere.
Long before the scandals, the nose jobs, and the court appearances, Michael Jackson was the youngest member of the beloved Jackson 5, later known as the Jacksons. In the late 70's, Michael was no longer a little boy, he was a young man who, in a few years, became the biggest selling solo artist and the most exciting live act since The Beatles. He teamed up with producer Quincy Jones, and the result was a collaboration that spawned 3 classic albums within 8 years: Off The Wall, the record breaking Thriller, and Bad.
Off The Wall captures Jackson right before the madness kicked in, and it is quite a moment to cherish. The 10-track album features some of Michael's greatest classics: the US number 1 hits Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, and the groovy Rock With You, the sweet ballad She's Out Of My Life (a song so sincere that MJ actually cries at the end), the upbeat Working Day And Night, the Paul McCartney penned Girlfriend, and, one of my personal favorites, the charming title track Off The Wall.
Many people regard Thriller, the 1982 follow up, as Michael's greatest achievement. Thriller was so successful that it overshadowed the Grammy winning debut. Whatever the case may be, Off The Wall is definitely Michael's prized contribution to music, an album so sweet and so modest, Michael ought to take lessons from it for his future release.

This 1979 release, IMO is his best solo release, and sounds timeless. Forget the hype surrounding the man; this is Michael at his best. Subsequent releases (particularly Thriller) would go on to cement his name in musical history (and IMO cause him to try and chase the record sales on future releases) I wish Mike would go back to this winning formula. Take one excellent producer (Quincy Jones) a backing group of top rate musicians (Paulino Da Costa, for example on Percussion) and live instruments, with great songs (by Michael himself, Stevie Wonder, Rod Templeton) This is one CD that you can let play without skipping tracks. From the great 'don't Stop (`til you get enough) listen to the great percussion that under pines this track, to rock with you, Working day and Night, and the title track, just flow. One of the essential albums of the 70's, 80's.
The legacy of Michael Jackson......MUSICAL PERFECTION!!.......2006-05-28
It is a shame really, that a lot of talented artists, such a Michael Jackson, had to resort to "Crossing Over", (Thriller), to get a little respect and acknowledgement. Even though years prior, before "Thriller", "Off The Wall" displayed his obvious and undeniable talent as a successful solo artist. This album made Michael Jackson relevant and creditable.
-He commands the lyrics on "Don't Stop til' You Get Enough" with a soft, mature, and controlled falsettous fury. The energy, the sound, the beat, and the technical melody is unmistakable to this day. Michael takes you places, musically, midway through the song, and brings you back with a loud "OOOOOH"!!!!-This phenomenal record is almost a song within a song. There is so many things going on throughtout, its hard to pick out whats what. The beats are so complex and intricate, as well as, hard to discribe sounds that are truly fresh and unique. It almost sounds to me like Michael can be heard playing on a bathroom drain pipe with a pair of spoons, while blowing through a bottle at the same time!!!
-(or maybe not.)-smile!!
-You see, this is what makes this album so much better than "Thriller". The risks and the limitless creativeity that engulfs this project will forever stand the test of time.
This album is a historical musical milestone.
As I continue on,
-"Rock with you", "Off The Wall, and "Burn This Disco Out", were all written by Rod Temperton; And less not forget, contributed greatly to Michael's huge success as a solo artist. "Rock with you", the better of the three, starts off with an introduction of heavy and distinctive drum beats, which afterwards, allowed michael to croon and flow through the mellow melody with ease. The smooth rhythms of "Rock With You" is a welcomed change after the hyperkinetic energy of "Don't stop til' you get enough"!!
-Ladies and Gentlemen, what can I say about Michael's "Working Day and Night" except, Michael never seems to let up on this song either; -He puts it in over-drive. He safely escorts you through his wild musical beats like the crocadile hunter going at a 100mph in the AFRICAN jungle while being chased by a hungry LION!!
-"Girlfriend" is a easely dimissable, forgettable, NERDY, and clueless, but playful piece of work written by paul mcartney. I'm not sure why michael and "Q" decided to put this song on the album. It really is out of place.
-(It reminds me of the "girl is mine" on "Thriller")!!!
-"I can't help it", -This jazzy love ballad created by Stevie Wonder proudly displayed Michael's soulfulness and joyous passion for his work. This has got to be my favorite song on the whole album!!!
"She's out of my life"-makes you weak with vulnerablity. In this song, Michael truly bares his soul.
Overall, I must say, Michael Jackson incredible talent is overwhelmingly evident on "Off the wall; Even though, "Thriller" and a niave MTV generation will ultimately over-shadow the brilliance of this great album, while gaining Michael Jackson the recognition he so rightfully deserved. No one could forsee, however, that he would eventually loose touch with what brought him to the dance in the first place.
-His SOULFULNESS.

Roger Waters staged this all-star revival of his Pink Floyd grand opus 11 years after the Floyd original and 7 years after The Final Cut, his last work with the band. It's a curious artifact of its time, as evidenced by the presence of the Hooters. Enlisting a mish-mashed cast of turn-of-the-decade stars, ranging from the Scorpions to Bryan Adams to Joni Mitchell, Waters attempts to give his production a new relevance. And, of course, where timeliness is concerned, there was some other business involving a wall going on in Berlin 'round about then. But aside from scattered highlights from the likes of Van Morrison (whose commanding "Comfortably Numb" makes one long to hear more from the Van the Man in a rock setting) and Sinead O'Connor ("Mother" is yet another example of her estimable interpretive powers), this Wall isn't so imposing as its studio predecessor. --Steven Stolder

Mixed emotions.......2007-05-21
I agree with many reviewers, this was one of the greatest album of all time, but if you want to hear it "Live", get "Is there anybody out there?" and hear the real live version of "The Wall". Many guests artist are making a real bad job on this cd, it all begin with Ute Lepter making a bad job on "The thin ice", we really miss David Gilmour voice here. Sinead O'Connor is bad also (Roger was there, so why asking somebody else to sing his part ?) and "The Band" ruins one of the best chorus of this double cd. Horrible ! Joni Mitchel is a real joke on "Goodbye blue sky", again, we're missing David Gilmour here, I don't know what Mrs Mitchell was on, but it doesn't seems to give a good effect ! Bryan Adams is doin' really great in my mind, his voice is the perfect choice for "Young Lust"
Jerry Hall is also a real joke in the opening of "One of my turns"
Paul Carrack is just OK on "Hey you". We have a great version of "Nobody Home", even better that the original, with a drum beat and a good guitar solo, good addition in my mind.
Here we get to the really bad moment of the album, which should have been the highlight, I am talking about "Confortably Numb" Van Morrisson and "The Band" should be sewed for such a disaster. Roger should have asked Paul Carrack to sing David Gilmour's part, it would have been better. This is a total disaster....it is really bad. The Australian Pink Floyd show is doin' a lot better that this ! The closing song has been replaced by "The Tide is turning", I am not sure it was a good idea, again, some guest are doin' great (Bryan Adams) but some are miserable, like Van Morrisson, yes him again ! Overall, the album is a deception for me, and I am a huge fan. Try "Is there anybody out there ?! instead.
Come On, This Is NOT exactly Holy Writ.......2006-09-01
I was never a huge Pink Floyd fan--which is not to say I didn't like their music or respect their talent. But, I dunno, maybe it was just ALL those annoying sound effects and voiceovers. Even good music can seem a little gimmicky when tarted up with too much extraneous noise. Yeah, I admit I liked the ringing cash registers drawer in "Money," but so much of the other stuff was, well, just a drag.
Literally, all that clutter dragged the music down. How often do I really need to hear that little kid prattle "Look mommy, there's an airplane in the sky" anyway?
But the real reason I never became a such a huge Floydfan was simply their ubiquity. Back in the late 60s and early 70s, it seemed like everybody I knew had every single one of their albums. And they had already become FM rock staples by then. You could escape the Pinks if you wanted to. Resultantly, I think maybe the last actual album of theirs that I even bothered to buy was UMMAGUMMA--or maybe ATOM HEART MOTHER. Can't recall which.
So when THE WALL came out, well, I heard it and as I recall my first reaction was something like, "Oh, are they still doing 'concept albums'?" OK, OK, I'm kidding--I did like it well enough, but it wasn't a life changing experience exactly either. The lyrics were intelligent enough, and as a "song cycle," it hung together very well. But it was actually hard to discern any real overarching themes and even the metaphoric "wall" itself seemed, if not "mixed," then perhaps a bit overextended. Was "the wall" a psychological construct, i.e. the protective "walls" we all build up around ourselves to protect ourselves from the vicissitudes of life ("All in all, it was all just bricks in the wall." OR was it a social one, i.e. the pernicious socialization of a rigid educational and, by extension, political system that crushed individuality and turned individual human beings into "bricks" in society's wall.
Well, the answer was obviously BOTH. And that extended metaphor never seemed to bother the fans overly much. There are, as it turns out, all kinds of walls. And so it was that in 1990, THE WALL's main composer--former Floydster Roger Waters--extended the metaphor even further, this time into the political realm. By staging an all-star concert revival of his 70s magnum opus in "post-Wall" Berlin. A brilliant ploy, to be sure, but certainly the "wall" being evoked was not a purely pychological or sociological phenomenon. The "wall" German fans (and they were legion as I recall from my own days in Deutschland) related to was a painful historical reality and legacy.
So the concert added on another layer of meaning to an already ambiguous (but really not overly subtle) work of art. Including local talent like Scorpions and Ute Lemper was then virtually de riguer--or should I say, "notwendig." And of course, Berlin was an international city for so long that adding other British, American AND even Russian acts to the roster was certainly appropriate. (Wait a minute, where are the French?) It's an "open city," and it's now torn down wall is open to new interpretation.
It's not surprising that die-hard Floyd fans see the guest vocalists' interpretations here as something akin to sacrilege. Imagine having a popster like Cyndi Lauper sing "The Wall, Pt. 2." Who'd a thunk it? Well, it's not a song that provides much room for Lauper's patented multi-octave wailing, but hey, the former Blue Angel has deeper rock roots than classic rock fanatics would ever acknowledge. And who better to sing the lines "We don't need no education" than one of popular musics most famous high school drop-outs? Of course, the repressiveness of the British school system is of a somewhat different order than that of the Catholic and public school system of Queens. But the business of churning out more bricks in and for the wall. And that's true whether you pronounce it "classroom" a la Lauper or "clahsroom," as does the chorus.
And there is a certain delicious irony in having a mother-complexed female artist like Sinead O'Connor take on Floyd's "Mother" and give it a delicate, thoughtful reading--while still expressing fears about them breaking, in this case, HER (metaphorical?) balls. And as conflicted as I often am about Joni Mitchell's work, her interpretion of "Goodbye, Blue Sky" is elegant. Her voice was getting a bit smoky by the early 90s, and it was just right for this somber reflection on war in the (post)modern world.
And that's just the women--and only disc one. But it was downright smart of Waters (whom, I gather, has sometimes been accused of misogyny) to fill up the first half of the program with heavyweight women artists (and to throw in a comic turn by Jerry Hall to boot: yes, the album is rife with former flames of Mick Jagger, since Marianne Faithfull shows up on Disc 2,as who else, "Mother").
As for the men, Van Morrison and Paul Carrack offer subtle, distinctive shadings on "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You" respectively. Roger Waters voice seems, for the most part, shot, but actually that can be a just the right coloration for some of the grimmer, more desperate tracks. Again the hardcore contingent will mourn David Gilmour's absence. The rest of us will find the newer interpretations at the very least interesting, if not quite revelatory.
There are all kinds of ways of becoming "comfortably numb." Refusing to accept any alternate takes on your own personal classic rock canon is likely one of them. Take it from a non-fan, this project is at least worth the attention of you die-hards. Open your ears--and tear down the walls.

The Miltary Orchestra Of The Soviet Army!!.......2005-12-31
Although many people gave this live concert a low rating due to Roger Waters' choice of substitute singers/musicians for some of the songs from the original Wall recording, after seeing it on video for the first time, it became easier to listen to the recording alone afterward.
What really blew me away at that time was Roger having a "communist" orchestra accompany the music of a rock and roll album!! This was the highlight of the entire event, and their performance was excellent!!!
No, not the same as the original, but great in its own right.......2005-02-25
I remember being so excited when Roger Water broadcast his The Wall: Live in Berlin during the summer of 1990 that I taped it off the radio; of course, this double CD set is a vast improvement. For those looking for the original sound of Pink Floyd's The Wall, you won't find it here--obviously, that album is a peerless classic. However, the Roger Waters version is great in its own right, and I think that fans of his style will definitely find plenty to like in this set.
Several songs on this album seem almost perfectly matched to their cover performers, including Bryan Adams with "Young Lust" and the Joni Mitchell version of "Goodbye Blue Sky." On a few tracks, however, I really missed Gilmour's soulful voice, especially "Mother" and "Hey You." But with Waters himself still doing lead on several of the songs (who else could sing "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1?"), this album captures enough flavor of the original to make it worthwhile. It will probably appeal more to fans of Waters than to Gilmour's followers, but I'd recommend it as a valuable addition to any Pink Floyd collection.

The Sincerest Form Of Flattery.......2005-11-30
Phil Spector was a millionaire at the age of 23, after producing 15 hits in a row, including classics by the Ronettes and the Crystals. He had his own record label, Philles, and was the creator of his trademark Wall Of Sound, usually manufactured at the Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, with a crack team of musicians including the Wrecking Crew and a host of session singers. As an auteur producer, probably the first of the breed, he was the acknowledged master, and his success engendered a whole genre of other groups and performers from New York to Los Angeles, like the Chiffons and the Shangri-Las, whose producers tried to emulate the sound and the success of the young svengali.
This collection brilliantly demonstrates some of the most notable efforts, with "many tracks reissued legally for the first time", as it says on the back. Spector wasn't easy to work with and the number of former acolytes who left the fold and set up in competition to try to beat him at his own game is almost a genre in itself: Sonny and Cher, the Righteous Brothers, Nino Tempo and April Stevens, Carol Connors and the writers Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich are all included here.
Rival companies such as Motown weren't above experimenting with the Spector sound in the early days, and there are two examples, one by the Supremes and one featuring the great Gladys Horton, moonlighting from the Marvelettes. For some, emulating Spector was a form of homage and tribute, as with Brian Wilson, whose own style developed from studying Phil Spector. His girl group productions were often pastiche, while the Beach Boys' Spectorish version of Why Do Fools Fall In Love? was probably inspired by Ronnie (later Ronnie Spector) of the Ronettes' love of the Frankie Lymon original. The Walker Brothers also owed a debt to Spector for the sound on their British hits, of which the first, Love Her, chosen here, was arranged by one of Spector's right hand men, Jack Nitzsche.
The Chiffons appear in their extra Spector-like guise as the Four Pennies on the chart-storming, if non-PC, Barry/Greenwich song When The Boy's Happy (The Girl's Happy Too), and there is a wonderful Wall Of Sound transformation of the Falcon's You're So Fine by Dorothy Berry, the wife of Richard Berry, who went on to become one of Ray Charles' Raelettes. One of the groups included even call themselves The Wall Of Sound, whilst another proclaims itself A Spectra Production. Every track has earned its place on this fascinating glimpse at some of the impact Spector had on the music scene between 1963 and 1967
There is a better Beach Boys cover of Spector's work.......2005-05-04
A better selection from the Beach Boys would have been "I Can Hear Music", certainly the definitive Spector cover. It easily bests the original while keeping its spirit intact. It doesn't merely ape Spectre; it becomes its own work. There's no denying the Spector influence on the Beach Boys, particularly Brian, but "I Can Hear Music" is an example of how Brian and the group assimilated, then surpassed, Spectre's technique. "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" is a slight piece of filler from the group's early days that doesn't display the group's prowess in the studio at its best and is a pretty weak tribute to Spector as well (likewise the group's cover of "Then I Kissed Her", thankfully overlooked for this collection.)
Ace album of Phil Spector Wall of Soundalikes.......2003-12-30
This isn't the first CD to catalog pop songs that were influenced by Phil Spector's revolutionary "Wall of Sound" production technique, but it's certainly among the best. Unlike grey-market items such as the three-volume Japanese "Touch the Wall of Sound" (reissued as a triple-disc in the past few years), this is a sanctioned release, and the ear-popping quality of the masters (including true stereo for tracks 1-2, 9-10, and 12) tells the tale.
It's really no surprise to anyone familiar with Spector's landmark singles of the early-60s that his sound had far reaching influence. It was borrowed by many of his partners, assistants and former artists, such as arranger Jack Nitzsche, go-fer Sonny Bono, former Teddy Bear bandmate Marshall Lieb, and Righteous Brother Bill Medley. Nitzsche's production of "When You Walk in the Room" builds up layers of guitars, percussion and strings in support of Jackie DeShannon's impassioned vocal. It's truly amazing that this brilliant record had little commercial success and has been all but totally eclipsed in the public consciousness by the Searchers hit cover. At least DeShannon collected songwriter's royalties! Bono's 1965 recording with Cher of "Just You" is filled with Spectorian touches of glockenspiel, strings and the underlying Wall of Sound. Lieb's "A Little Love (Will Go a Long Way)" (co-penned by `60s stalwart Gary Zekley) sounds as much like a Darlene Love tune as anything Love actually recorded; but it's not - it's Alder Ray on lead, with Love guiding the backing vocals. Medley helmed the Righteous Brothers kickoff single for Verve (having split with Spector), Mann & Weil's "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration," and showed that the duo's sound was as much their own as Spector's.
Spector's sound had its impact at more of a distance, as well. Early efforts by the Supremes often sounded more like Brill Building girl-group productions than Motown's trademark soul sound. Other early Motown acts like The Darnells were also treated to the percussion and vocal layers of The Wall of Sound. More famously, Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson was a thorough Spector devotee. The group's take on Frankie Lymon's "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" marries the Beach Boys' multipart harmonies to the shifting backing of Spector's wall.
Mick Patrick's song-by-song liner notes are wonderfully informative, providing valuable background on both the better-known and obscure sides that helps place these tracks in context with Spector's own work. Vintage photos, picture sleeve and 7" label reproductions flesh out a superb booklet for a wonderfully curated disc.
Essential for fans of Spector and Sixties pop/rock.......2003-11-30
It's an odd title, and an odd concept - the kind that's usually the basis for bootleg or "collectors-only" albums. But this is all legal, and all magnificent. Although Phil Spector himself isn't involved in any of these tracks, many of his compadres (Jack Nitzsche, Nino Tempo, Sonny Bono, Carol Connors) are. In my opinion, anyone who seriously enjoys Spector's work, or Sixties pop/rock in general, should have this CD right next to their copy of Spector's "Back to Mono" box set. Which reminds me of the album's one flaw - some of the tracks included here in stereo would have been better off in mono, especially Nino & April's "All Strung Out." But that's a minor quibble with an otherwise near-perfect collection.

Is viewing better than just listening????.......2007-02-06
The music content of this SACD is excellent. However, the audio although very good, is presented essentially in concert mode. I would therefore suggest that viewing the concert on DVD (if available) would probably be a greater experience than just listening to the cd. That does not detract from the 'listenability' of this quality SACD.
Awesome concert.......2003-07-14
I like this concert. I think Roger Waters did a really good job of getting a good support group for this show. It's a shame that he couldn't get the support group that belongs in this concert - the other members of Pink Floyd. It's interesting that the two Germanies could unite, but Pink Floyd couldn't.
As I said, I liked the people that he did get. The Scorpions for In the Flesh, Sinead O' Conner for Mother and others. It is interesting that Roger Waters sounded old for this concert and not for In The Flesh.
I am happy they released this one in SACD. Now if they would release the others.

Product Description
Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

This is a REALLY cool album of shape-note singings, I particurlarly like EVERY STRING AWAKE and ANTHEM FOR EASTER.
Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

He misses his mark on this one.......2006-06-22
Philip Baily has a awesome voice for the right songs but only ones that were awesome is one written by Phil Collins & one after that. The rest of the songs were just so so.I believe on his next cd if he makes another without E.W.F. it could be awesome with Phil Collins & him writing together on a whole cd.
Amazing Music.......2005-10-14
Amazing 1984 release from the co-lead singer of Earth, Wind, and Fire, Philip Bailey. The album is clearly a work of Phil Collins, with the signature horns and dynamic drumming, not to mention the duet with the two Phils (Easy Lover). But Mr. Bailey stamps his own name on here, as well, with his one-of-a-kind astonishing voice. Each song has is its own style, ranging between rock and R&B, but with the number of songwriters on the album, we are given a diverse set of tracks. Yet with the production of Mr. Collins and the performance of Mr. Bailey, everything works just fine. Get this CD and treat yourself to a musical gem.
Good CD, but he has a much better one if you can find it..........2005-01-22
Don't get me wrong, this CD showcases Philip doing some of his best work of the decade only due the fact EWF was going through their "ELECTRONIC" period(see "Photogenic Memory" as proof). If you can find it, his BEST work without a doubt is on his DEBUT album entitled 'CONTINUATION',which is, alas NOT on CD, but should clearly be. I think 'CHINESE WALL' was just a vehicle for Phil Collins to return a favor to Bailey and EWF for borrowing their horn section(The Phoenix Horns)for his solo project(see and HEAR the song 'SUSSUDIO' among others. I'm not trashing the CD, mind you, I just think once you hear the other album, you all will be convinced. Maybe someone at SONY/COLUMBIA will take the hint and release it on disc in the NEAR future. Don't hold your breath. Been there....Done that!
Excellent.......2004-10-25
This album is super!!! Phillip Bailey is one of kind. The best song is Walking on the chinese wall. It is truly one of a kind. It kind of gives you a feel that you are in ancient China. And who can forget the smash hit "Easy Lover". It also one of my all time 80's favorites and anyone who is an eighties buff must have this album! If you are a Collins or Bailey fan you must have this one in your collection. It is just fantastic!!!!
Lack of Cohesion in this collection is the only drawback.......2004-06-05
"Chinese Wall" is the "solo" debut by Earth Wind and Fire's Phillip Bailey. It might be a bit unfair to Bailey, but 80s superstar Phil Collins plays a major role on many dimensions of this album. Collins plays instruments or provides vocals on every track on this album. Collins also serves as the album's producer and is co-writer of the mega duet he does with Bailey "Easy Lover" Collins takes his long-time studio and tour musician Darryl Stuermer to play guitars on many of the tracks. Despite the heavy hand of Phil Collins, much of this album still has the footprint of Phillip Bailey on it. Bailey's unique voice is heard throughout the album and contributes to some of the songwriting. For Collins, the mid 80s was his hey-day - he worked with his solo career, Genesis, producing artists like Bailey and Eric Clapton, and even joining Led Zeppelin at Live Aid.
This album is a good album, but for a solo album it seems to suffer from 'too many cooks in the kitchen' and as a result, I don't feel there is the type of cohesion between the tracks that I would expect from the album. There are TWENTY songwriters on this album (including Collins and Bailey in the total) - with a different combination of songwriters on each track. That is way too many songwriters for an album. As a result there are some good songs and some weaker songs.. Producer Phil Collins at getting the most out of Phillip Bailey on each of the tracks, but it is tougher to get the cohesion I normally look for on every effort. A little more cohesion, I would have rated this album much higher.
For the most part, this is more of an R&B album and Bailey's vocals shine in many areas. The most popular song from the album is "Easy Lover" which is the duet between Collins and Bailey - this is more of a Rock song. Collins riveting drums are clearly heard on this particular song. It's a shame that Collins and Bailey have not done more duets because there is great synergy between them as evidenced on this album. The best song on this album is the title track "Walking on the Chinese Wall". This song also doesn't has more of a Pop/Rock feel than an R&B feel - but it is a great and moving song. As it the song it really discusses "Ancient Tale of hidden Chinese Love" using a lot of symbolism. Bailey's voice is the best I ever heard it - and that goes back to his Earth Wind and Fire days. Collins has some trademark haunting drums as well. This song got some airplay in 1985, but never got the type of attention or popularity it deserved. It's a shame that the songwriters - Roxanne Seeman, Marcy Levy, and Billie Hughes didn't get to have another track on the album.
There are highlights with the lesser known tracks. As for some of the classic R&B stuff, two great tracks are "For Every Heart That's Been Broken" and "Go". "For Every Heart..." is a slower track while "Go" is a very catchy song with some catchy lyrics "Life is full of passion; cavier and fashion; Go, go out and play"... "Go, for whatever reason; Go, it's the time and season". The song "Time is a Woman" is nice fusion between R&B and Rock" with some great guitar work by Stuermer. It also contains great background vocals. "Woman" is a nice song that has the Collins' trademark horns in it. There even is a "latin style horn interlude" toward the latter part of the song. The interesting thing about "Woman" is that Bailey uses a more baritone voice than he has ever used. Collins again comes in with some great drumming as well. Another underrated track is "Children of the Ghetto" - its a slower, more R&B feel to it. Collins' drums sound outstanding and have a 3 dimensional effect to it. This is also a well written song that basically describes as the title indicates - children living in the ghetto. The opening track is weak - "Photogenic Memory". Yes Collins has some nice drumming, but it is a very weak dance style song with some computer-like voice by the background vocals. It also seems to go on forever and doesn't excite me.
This CD has outstanding liner notes. All of the lyrics are included. Each song has all of the appopriate credits in terms of songwriters and musicians. There is a nice gallery containing pictures of some of the faces behind the music (this is always a pleasant treat). Of course, there is a picture of the Great Wall of China even though the album has very little oriental influence other than the title track.
This CD is still worth getting in your collection. Whether you are a Collins or Bailey fan (or both), there should be something for everyone in this collection despite what I feel is a lack of cohesion.
