4 out of 5 stars A collection of great instrumentals.......2006-08-10

Ian Anderson has always been known for his flute. What we have here is a flute player arranging and playing some very innovative flute.
The entire album is instrumental, so we miss out on Anderson's outstanding lyric writing talents.
Ian trades his lyrics in for some of the finest flute music you will ever want to hear.
There is not a bad song on the CD. The highlights for me include, In a Stone Circle, In the Grips of Stronger Stuff, and in defence of Faiths. These 3 compositions are not only outstanding but will stand the test of time, which in my mind is the only true test of music. You will never hear Ian Anderson compose anything more solid. The rest of the CD is basically elevator music with occasional highlights.
Ian plays the flute in his patented style and is in top form.
This is much better than its predecessor Walk into Light.
If you are a Jethro Tull fan this should interest you.

2 out of 5 stars Less Than Divine.......2006-07-28

For the record, I've been a huge fan of Jethro Tull since 1968 and a great admirer of Ian Anderson's recent work, such as "The Secret Language of Birds." Anderson is, in my estimation, one of the more significant composer/musicians of our day, and his post-Jethro Tull work has been quite wonderful.

Having said that, I am disappointed with his Twelve Dances with God. The music is pretty, in a generic way, but it lacks the compositional intricacy that is the hallmark of Anderson's work. There are few, if any, key modulations, which Anderson does so well in other works. The pieces are all instrumental - flute together with orchestral instruments and the occasional keyboard. They are all pleasant, in a "new age" sort of way, but lacking musical substance. Nice background music for the office or at home, perhaps.

My chief disappointment is that all twelve pieces sound monotonously similar. I assumed that the theme of this album is the diversity of expressions as humans attempt to dance with God. Leaving the theological aspects aside (this is, after all, an album of music not a theological text), I would have expected a greater diversity of rhythm and tune. However, each track seems to flow into the next. Perhaps this is reflective of "new age spirituality" where truth and deity are rather elastic, but that would take some elucidation from Ian Anderson himself. The music itself doesn't seem to have much to say. If these are twelve dances with God, perhaps it would be better to let Him take the lead.

    5 out of 5 stars completely satisfied..........2004-08-09

I have been a long time Tull fan and consequently, Ian Anderson.
As mentioned in earlier reviews on this page, this is a true gem and a tribute to Ians ability to be musically creative, fluid and expansive in a musical genre distinctly different from his rock and blues roots.

    5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2004-05-19

This album holds me in rapt fascination whenever I play it. Each song is Anderson's interpretation of the spirit of one of Earths religions. The 12 songs are unique in their own right, but somehow mesh with each other, like they are all really dancing with the same God. Each time I listen to this work I hear more or feel something different. It is a masterpiece.

From the roar of Tibetan horns and the clangor of metal percussion that opens Beauty in the Beast, Wendy Carlos in 1986 signaled a new direction for her music. Beauty in the Beast is Carlos's magnum opus, an album that should have established the synthesizer's role in the new global music landscape. More than that, it should have established Carlos as a composer and not just a Switched-on Bach jukebox. But not too many people were listening. Rereleased now after 14 years, Beauty in the Beast has lost none of its power. Carlos is both profound and poignant, dissonant and disarming on Beauty, as she fuses a global orchestra from her synthesizers. "Poem for Bali" is the centerpiece of the album, an episodic, 17-minute excursion as Carlos orchestrates the sounds and rhythms of a digital gamelan orchestra. In addition to replicating the metallophones, gongs, and flutes of the traditional gamelan, she creates her own hybrid sound designs, giving this work a surreal and sometimes harrowing tone, like a dream bent through funhouse mirrors. But then there are pieces such as "A Woman's Song," based on a Balkan melody. The title track merges nightmare landscapes and a crazed carnival calliope with a haunting theme that sounds like a lament for the end of the world. Beauty in the Beast is an essential recording of both modern composition and synthesis--Carlos should plug into this circuit again. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Weird, but it works.......2005-06-14

You've never heard anything quite like Beauty in the Beast, and it *does* take some getting used to. But once you have, it's a must-have record.

There are a variety of musical styles on BitB, ranging from african-sounding percussion to martian jazz. The title cut is just plain haunting.

The supplementary files include an essay on tuning, with audio files as examples. I found these to be very informative, particularly regarding the alpha and beta scales used in the title cut.

      It's weird, but it works.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing work.......2004-07-04

If you are unfamiliar with alternate tonal scales or non-western music, be prepared for a shock. When I first heard the CD in the 80's, I hated it. I listened again, and again, and began to retune and understand. Now it is one of my favorite albums, definite in the top ten. If you have an ear to hear, give it a listen.

      3 out of 5 stars Brain Damage.......2003-02-27

Instinctively attracted to classical music I have been unable to listen to this work without becoming physically ill. Constant shifts in tonality make this an interesting case study from a pathological standpoint but don't expect to enjoy it. This is music that has lost the center. There is no harmonic whole, there can be no cycle of fifths, scientifically justifiable yet all is arbitrary. This is the opposite of loop based music and the ultimate 'special effects' driven experiment. If you want non tempered classical music I recommend Harry Partch or Moon Dog or one of the more staid composers of modern music. Get this CD by all means. You won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars The end of a long period of Tragic Unavailability.......2002-01-03

I have proudly owned a copy of the first release of this CD all these years. It is the best example I know of an utterly brilliant recording being tragically unavailable. As other reviewers note, the tuning does sound strange at first, but then one realizes how quickly one not only adjusts to it, but starts to hear it as natural and normal.

Do yourself a favor and get this CD now. It is indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Music in the World.......2001-09-02

Nonstandard tunings, masterfully used. Gothic, "Bush of Ghosts" feeling. Great instrument modeling, not trying to sound just like acoustic instruments but using attributes of their spectra as part of instrument creation. Uh, it's real pretty. Spooky and balanced.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best compilation out there........2007-01-24

What a gem! In my opinion, the single best compilation of West African music from the golden age of african music. Authentically African through and through with cut after cut of great tunes. And even for someone like me who owns a great many CDs from this era, this album still constantly surprises and delights. The only negative I can think of to make you hesitate buying this CD is its abnormally high price. But then again, you are getting over 140 minutes...

5 out of 5 stars The *BEST* compilation of African Pop Music available right now.......2006-09-21

The first disc includes such hard-to-find gems as _Taximan (not gentille) and _Jaloux Saboteurs_ but it is the second disc that sizzles with pitch-perfect selections that are perfectly sequenced. The sound is beautiful and though Christgau gives the _African Ambience_ disc an A+ and this set only an A, I think he'll change his ratings over time :-).

      5 out of 5 stars My God..........2006-01-04

After listening carefully to this volume, better (but not less interesting) than volume 2, i can only say a couple of things:
First one: Vive l'Afrique. And especially the West one.
Second: the compilation its excellent itself, but who the hell are these girls Amazones of Guinée!? This track number 13 called Samba is memorable. Djs be aware.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificently upbeat, danceable music.......2005-06-20

This double-CD set cmprises a truly great selection of tracks, almost all from bands once hugely successful in their home lands but which you'll probably never come across anywhere else. Every track blazes sunshine and warmth - it's become one of THE albums I pick to listen to before going to concerts, and no matter how tired I am it has be dancing about the flat like a fool. The first time I heard it I was impressed - and every listen thereafter has made me fonder and fonder of it.

The same publishers produced the Desert Blues box sets, and while volume two of those is even better that this album it's a close-run thing:)

The hottest selling chillout compilation series in South Africa is Cafe d'Afrique, solidly outperforming such genre stars as Buddha Bar and Hotel Costes. Featuring a fantastic mix of South African and international artists, the album is a 15-track adventure deep into the heart of down-tempo music and stunning female pop vocal tracks.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Afro-Schmaltz; Not Feelin' It.......2007-04-10

I already feel this review may be more than slightly unfair, since I bought the product sight unseen (sound unheard?) and wanted it to be something other than what it is, if you follow me. I don't think I was too far off the reservation expecting it to be chillout/downtempo stuff with an Afrobeat influence -- read the product description -- but what it actually is is mainly indistinguishable from your late-'80s-early-'90s soft-jazz adult-contemporary FM station of choice, only, you know, in South Africa. Ellora Ghosh brings some nicely morbid vocals to track 4, but it's canceled out by track 10, "Hands on a Miracle," over which the spectre of Amy Grant hangs grinning ghastlily; anything with even a mild Xtian influence makes me flee like Dracula. I guess it was too raj of me to expect music from Africa to sound, uh, African; take a lesson from me and learn that inflexible adherence to outdated stereotypes will burn you every time, kids. Nice packaging, though.

          5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem!!.......2007-07-09

This is a stunning release from the french/Senegalese lyricist Mokobe from the french hip hop collective 113. Every track has a different flavour to it. Very well produced yet it still retains the raw emotions of real artists and maintains a very african vibe. Beautiful songs and bangin beats. Love it!
