FACT Magazine
One of the electronic albums of the year from Chile's answer to Derrick May

Product Description
Crosstown Rebels is proud to present its first artist album Familia by producer extraordinaire Pier Bucci.

Already something of a legend, Pier Bucci along with fellow countrymen Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano have lead the recent emergence of cutting edge electronica in Chile - producing some of the finest and most original works in the world. This Chilean trio is writing a new chapter of dance music, splicing traditional South American melody and rhythm with conventional electronic music to create an infectious hybrid.

Pier Bucci has previously recorded with Argenis Brito as Mambotur, with Argenis and Luciano as Monne Autonme, and he co-produced last year's Lucien & Luciano's album Blind Behaviour - but it's with Crosstown Rebels he's branched out as a solo artist working under his own name.

A masterpiece from an artist at the top of his game, Familia features 10 brand new and exclusive tracks creating the perfect balance of headphone sensibility and dancefloor abandon.

Here's a little something to tide you over until Jay-Z decides to come correct. Then again, Roc-A-Fella Records could release Sean Carter Sings MC Hammer's Greatest Hits and watch it ship platinum. So, it really doesn't matter if Dynasty seems to be a rather half-hearted effort from the man who many consider to be the best rapper this side of Rakim. Although presented as a solo album, Dynasty showcases the Roc-A-Family, giving extensive mic time to Beanie Sigel and Memphis Bleek, who gets a whole track (the Ja Rule-esque "Holla") to himself. Amil, whose own solo album, All Money Is Legal failed to reveal her inner queen, turns up to rhyme the hook on the posse cut, "You, Me, Him & Her." Jay-Z keeps his flow fairly straightforward here, and the beats neatly reflect his icy, relatively soulless lyrics. But of course, as the man himself has said, you "can't knock the hustle." --Rebecca Levine

4 out of 5 stars One of the better compilations (3 and 1/2 stars).......2007-06-29

Let me start off by saying that the Intro is vintage Jay-z but its not the only track where Jigga goes off on. Streets Is Talking which features Beanie Sigel is another track where Jigga killed it and Beanie's verse was crazy too. Both Jay-z and Beanie rip the track Stick 2 The Script to shreds and Guilty Until Proven Innocent which features R. Kelly is Jay-z's finest moment on the mic. Scarface joins Jay-z and Beanie on the heartfelt This Cant Be Life. Memphis Bleek does pretty well on his solo joint Holla and Where Have You Been is one of the best songs on here as Jay-z and Beanie talk about their deadbeat fathers on the track. Although I love the song, I still dont like the 2 minutes of vinyl static that comes after the song fades out. This comp is not without its flaws. Parking Lot Pimpin is boring and so is 1-900-Hustler. Squeeze First is a classic example of beatwasting as Jay-z spits lukewarm verses of a hard beat. The R.O.C which features Memphis Bleek and Beanie Sigel is a commercial blunder and Jay-z's solo track, Soon You'll Understand is annoying to say the least. Bottom Line: Roc La Familia is one of the better rap compilations even though it has its suspect moments. Standout Tracks: INTRO, CHANGE THE GAME, STREETS IS TALKING, THIS CANT BE LIFE, GET YOUR MIND RIGHT MAMI, STICK 2 THE SCRIPT, YOU, ME HIM, HER, GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT, HOLLA and WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars: When Rocafella ruled hiphop.....................2006-11-25

Bump what you heard - Dynasty was the joint! The Roc came into 2000 on roll having just dropped Vol 3 in 99. The joints on here are classic.

Top Joints:
Change The Game (Classic)
I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me) (CLassic)
This Can't Be Life (Deep Scarface & Jay Joint)
You, Me, Him And Her (ROC Joint)
Guilty Until Proven Innocent (Classic Kells & Jay joint. Jay would later plead guilty.)
Parking Lot Pimpin' (Classic)
Holla (Memph Bleek rips: Number One Rule: Never get caught Slippin! That's why I eat, sleep, sh%t with my gat. Get up, Take a piss, f*ck a b*tch with my gat.)
1-900-Hustler (Roc & State Property get their roll on)
Where Have You Been (Joint for all of the fatherless boys out there that grew to be men, like myself. Great performance from Jay & BSeigel.)

The intro is tight, the rest just sucks... End of review!

4 out of 5 stars underated.......2006-06-10

rip manpac you must not be a rap fan or a jayz fan talkin bout vol 3 was trash and the dynasty was worst u must like them franchise boyz cds or something cause them two albums are two of his best but anyway the dynasty was spose to be a compulation album thats the reason for the guess appereances but its a solid album on bad but underated

3 out of 5 stars The Dynasty of Roc-A-Fella .......2006-05-18

I guess the Roc-A-Fella dynasty will never fall off. Every year, they seem to be getting stronger, but it's hard to knock their hustle, while Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella army are showing us why they are number one by dropping smash hit singles such as the "Neptunes'" produced, "I Just Wanna Love You" and "Guilty Until Proven Innocent" with R. Kelly singing the hook. Beanie Sigel really comes strong on this one, with cuts like "Streets Is Talking" and "Where Have You Been" where Mack and Jay talk about their father's leaving. Not as vivid as "Reasonable Doubt" nor as slick as "Vol. 2" but still most of the production work makes up for the album, i.e. Just Blaze and Kanye West (listen to "This Can't Be Life").

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Sounds of the Caribbean.......2007-01-13

I fell in love with the music of Chichi Peralta while living in Ecuador and Pa' Otro La'O is a fantastic example of the diversity of rhythms, melodies and beats that endears Chichi to his listeners. On this album you will find bittersweet love songs and great dance hits; there are romantic lyrics and Caribbean sounds. Whether you speak Spanish or not, you will enjoy this CD!

We have enjoyed so much our new Chi Chi Peralta CD and we think that we made an exellent purchase at Amazon, we recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great work from Chichi and Jandy.......2005-04-21

This is the best Chichi Peralta CD by far, each track surpasses the next with the best being La Ciguapa, Amor Narcotico, Procura and Limon con Sal. However all the rest are very very good. This is definitely Merengue at its best. Jandy and his son familia, have always been one of the top class exponents of the genre and Chichi was Juan Luis Guerra percussionist for a long time (no words needed there). So, do yourself a favor if you don't have the CD. Get it!

    5 out of 5 stars Sin igual y imprescindible.......2005-01-08

This is the truly great work of La Familia because it features some of the best sound arrangements produced by the group. It also features the splendid voices of Little Joe and Johnny which we all miss. This was the sound that made people dance and get truly involved with the music; something that can't be done nowdays with keyboards and a six piece band. If you want the best from Little Joe,try this CD on for size. It's like a good beer------YOU CAN'T PUT IT DOWN-----------------------------JULIAN A. ORTA SR.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best latin albums of 2005.......2006-01-24

I have been a Chichi Peralta fan from his beginnings and i compare this CD with his first production "amor narcótico": full of joy, lyrics, rhythm!

La Zalamera: Full of rhythm, techno, bass...definitely you have to shake at least your shoulders! One of my favorites.

Rumores del barrio: Salsa-son about "gossips in the neighborhood", a very typical situation in Dominican Republic, talking about everyone's lifes.

Un rato en la gloria: Talks about the sadly situation of youngs prostitutes, good lyrics with nice rhythm.

Más que suficiente: It's about the relationship with God and its love. Its a soft song with great combination of sound elements only as Chichi knows to do.

Cuenta la historia: Recounts about another Dominican Republic drama: Passionate crimes, women and their children killed by their jealous husbands.

Te pienso: Another great song that talks about the beautifull feelings of love. Nice to dance with your own love.

Hoy he vuelto a pensar en ti: Nice, nice, nice, nice...!

      Tamborada: Another of my favorites!

Mire a vei: Rythmical love song. My third favorite!

Oceano: Soft Jazz-bolero-bachata fusion about love

Chichi achieved in this album another great fusion: Social complaint and love wrapped in a rhythmical and danceable work.

5 out of 5 stars Chichi Dit it Again! Mucho mas que Suficiente!.......2005-10-16

WOW, what can I say about this album. I just got it hours ago and I haven't stop listening to it. Chichi's music takes u right into his world from the minute that you open the cd case. The art work explains his message, the vivid colors, the much thoughtout pictures and then the best lisenting to the cd. The masterpiece of this year. From La Zalamera to Mas Que Suficiente, and Te Pienso. Chichi is stronger than ever, delivering his message one of the best way ever done.
The wait was worth it! this is without a doubt an award wining cd from one of the world's best musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Chichi Peralta Y Son Familia - Mas Que Suficiente.......2005-10-14

Rich fusion of sound colors... Highly artistic original music... Chichi Peralta constantly in search of fresh musical ideas combining the old and the new... This CD doesn't sound like anything that's being created by mainstream Latin artists... Superb percussion performance as always... Tropical sounds and rhythms with strong African roots fused with contemporary acoustic and electronic elements... This is an artwork of tropical music for the next generation. A must have for all serious music lovers!

At last, a replacement for Roberto Szidon's long-deleted recording of Cirandas! This is one of Villa-Lobos's most delightful works, a long piano suite (41:46 in this recording) of folk-flavored pieces that progress from one charming idea to another and never outlast their material. The Baby's Family, the first of two suites, is also charming music, made popular by Artur Rubinstein. The Chopin tribute is one of those crocks of musical dishwater Villa-Lobos stuck his hands into when his mind was on something else, but it's brief and comes at the end of the disc. Brazilian pianist Sonia Rubinsky plays with stylistic insight and gorgeous piano tone, very well captured by Naxos in a recording that sat in the can for almost five years before it was finally issued. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Rubinsky : a new reference in Villa Lobos.......2005-04-18

When Villa Lobos listened for the first time the works of Debussy and Stravinsky ( The Russian Ballets of Diaghlev danced in Rio de Janeiro in 1913 and 1917) he found the way to create something really adequate to involve Brazilian authentic tunes . The first important period of Villa Lobos as a composer involve two series of works: The Prole do Bebê ( No 1 and No 2) and the Choros. Prole do Bebê is full of Pentatonic and whole tone scales, and the Harmony of some of the pieces are deeply influenced by Stravinsky: The Polichinelo is a Brazilian brother of the Russian white/black harmony of Petrushka. For the first time one Brazilian composer was proud of our authentic songs and he placed these lovely melodies in the middle of a very sophisticated piano writing and with new harmonies that fitted wonderfully with his purposes. The Cirandas is also involved with the child's world. I would like to remember that The Cirandas are not important only as a wonderful composition, but I'm sure too that without this work a lot of authentic folkloric melodies would be lost ,as our childs don't play no more singing these melodies. Times of globalization...
The Prole No 1 and the Cirandas are among the most often played and recorded piano works of Heitor Villa Lobos. The references for the Prole do Bebe No 1 are of course Aline van Barentzen , that recorded the Prole 1 and 2 in Paris for EMI in the presence of the composer ( unfortunately the CD version of the album "Villa Lobos par lui meme" doesn't include this important recording, that was present in the LP version), Nelson Freire( unfortunately he recorded only the Prole 1) and Anna Stella Schic . For the Cirandas the references are again Anna Stella Schic ( the only pianist that recorded the complete works for piano by Villa Lobos), Roberto Szidon and Caio Pagano.
I'm profoundly satisfied with this first record of this important project ( It will be a series of 9 Cds, I believe). Sonia Rubinsky plays very well, and I would like to prize her attitude about the fidelity towards the printed score. As the Prole do Bebe No 1 includes some very often played compositions , they are normally played with some liberties and "traditions". As Mahler used to say, "Tradition is Schlamperei". I really prefer to listen these pieces as Sonia Rubinsky plays: as they are written. One can prefer the exceptional musicality of Nelson Freire in the Prole, or the analytical sound of Caio Pagano in the Cirandas. But Sonia is a first rate pianist too. She has a wonderful sonority .With her flawless musicality we can say that this integral began as a new reference in Villa Lobos discography .

5 out of 5 stars Lively Piano Music from Brazil.......2003-05-20

Villa-Lobos, who is of course the great composer of Brazil, has a less secure place in the history of modern music of the West, so it is good that his art is getting a reappraisal, with various record labels committed to issuing cycles of his works-the symphonies and string quartets, for example. Villa-Lobos wrote a great deal of piano music that isn't heard as much as it used to be, so the present CD, the first in a two-volume series (maybe there will be more) from Naxos is welcome indeed.

If Ginastera is the Bartok of the pampas, Villa-Lobos, in his piano music at least, might be seen as early Prokofiev or Stravinsky transported to the Amazon. As with Ginastera, there is much of surface glitter and of grit, but the emotional depths that Ginastera plumbs in his more inward music seems sorely lacking in much of this piano music by Villa-Lobos. Maybe inwardness wasn't on the composer's agenda as he tried to recreate the world of childhood in these pieces. But I wish he had taken his cue from Schumann, whose "Kinderscenen" is great music primarily because it doesn't shy away from the truth that childhood isn't all fun and games, though the troubling dissonances that intrude on the surface serenity of Villa-Lobos' "The Countess" and "What Beautiful Eyes!" hint at this fact.

Anyway, there is certainly a place for brilliance and grit, which Villa-Lobos' music has in abundance, and especially if you don't listen to all these pieces at one sitting, you will appreciate the freshness and liveliness of Villa-Lobos' invention. I think you'll also find Villa-Lobos' brand of musical primitivism, which intelligently combines European modernism and native New World musical elements, intriguing. You'll probably be amused, too, by "Little Black Doll" and "Look at the Pretty Birdy," which start off as perfect Debussy knockoffs but quickly absorb Villa-Lobos' own Latin-tinged idiom. Certainly, it's easy to see why the Petrouchka-influenced "Punch" from "A Prole do Bebe" suite was at one time an encore favorite with pianists such as Villa-Lobos' champion Artur Rubinstein. Then there is the jazzy "In This Street" from "Cirandas," which illustrates Villa-Lobos' unique assimilation of European and Brazilian popular music.

Sonia Rubinsky brings the requisite pianistic chops to this recital. She has great technique and finds no hurdles she can't manage in Villa-Lobos' sometimes grueling keyboard writing. But she also brings delicacy, charm, and wit to her assignment as well, which breathes life and purpose into the quieter pieces like "What Beautiful Eyes!" A first-rate sound recording, too, from Fisher Hall in Santa Rosa, California. This disc is recommended without hesitation.

4 out of 5 stars Charming Villa-Lobos pieces for children........2001-12-18

The move from the large-scale orchestra we may be more familiar with to the piano does not mean that the music of Villa-Lobos loses any of its energy, rhythm, colour or beauty. The two major works here, 'A Prole do Bebe' (the Baby's family) and 'Cirandas' (a Portuguese dance) evoke the world of childhood, and are said to belong to the traditon of Schumann and Tchaikovsky, but the warm colours and rich harmonies are more tropical than those chilly Europeans, with Villa-Lobos brilliantly incorporating and reworking Brazilian folk material. The first wittily depicts the personalities of a child's dolls; the set of dances push their good-natured skittishness into real emotion at times. The 'Homage a Chopin' give a famously restrained and reflective idiom some sunny and dramatic virtuosity. Brazilian pianist Sonia Rubinsky knows these pieces and their influences well, and responds to them with intelligence, empathy and humour.

      5 out of 5 stars More, please!.......2001-02-28

I have heard Villa-Lobos' A prole do Bebê in various interpretations, but I cannot remember it ever has impressed me more than in Sonia Rubinsky's recording of it, which is utterly virtuoso (I mean a natural virtuosity without bravado)and at the same time very warm and colorful. As in `A prole do Bebê' the `Cirandas', on the same record, show a surpring succesion of various moods, dreamy or exciting, tender or fiery and passionate. There is a continuous tension between strong rhythm and free flowing melody, and a sonority that is very well preserved in the excellent recording. She does not `hammer' the Cirandas as if they were written by Bartòk - a pitfall that seems not altogether imaginary. This is only the first of a series of discs on which Sonia Rubinsky will play Villa Lobos' complete piano works. I hope it won't take too long before we will be able to hear them all. In a broadcast by The Radio Suisse Romande I heard a marvelous sample of the net yet available second volume, which I am eagerly awaiting, as well as the other volumes.

      1 out of 5 stars Native?.......2000-10-25

The playing here is rather weak and one has to wonder if being a native of a particular country can be a benefit or a hindrence? As for fantasy, which is much needed in the music of Villa Lobos, I don't feel there is much> The quality of this recording seems o.k. I heard a performance of this pianists RUDEPOEMA and was equally unimpressed! As for the composer? Villa lobos is Fantastic! Interestingly enogh, the pianist Deborah Halasz has embarked on a interesting complete Villa lobos piano music set thet outshines the other competitors, including the mundane playing of Marc Andre Hamelin

I have other NORE CDs and I will add this to the ones I like. The beats are great and NORE flow is diffrent but you still get the Raw substance that you are use to from him. Many guest available to give you a taste of other artist trying their hand in Reggeton.

5 out of 5 stars Off the Hook!!! ( Stop Hatin on reggaeton).......2006-12-25

I'm tired to see people disrespect Reggaeton artists just because they ain't feelin it, then leave it. This is just an another Great album for Nore to add in his already long list, if the next one is just as tight I will definitely cop.

1 out of 5 stars Its All About EL DINERO!.......2006-11-09

This dude is all about the money trying to cash in on the reggaeton and latinos this dude should just stick to what he knows best and thats not reggaeton.I rather get the new wisin Y yandel !ES TODO!

        4 out of 5 stars Tight beats..4 stars....Lame raps from N.O.R.E....2 stars.......2006-09-13

First off I'd like to say as a fluent Spanish speaker and one of the biggest fans of the Reggaeton movement, if this review was based on just the score I give for the beats and production it would receive 4 stars. However, since it ain't, I must give this album a 4 for production and a 2 for the sorry raps from N.O.R.E. I apologize to all his fans, but c'mon y'all, dude raps way better in English! All of us fluent spanish speaking latinos know this for a fact. In one of his verses he says "Yo quiere" when it should be "Yo quiero". There are other verses that show he clearly is barely learning to speak Spanish. And a lot show he doesn't know proper grammar either. He should have brushed up on his Spanish before releasing any reggaeton material. As a rapper and latino he should be ashamed of himself. Other than that all the guest spots from the big names in reggaeton and sick production are really what make this album good, not N.O.R.E. himself. These tracks should have been given to Daddy Yankee or Don Omar.

2 out of 5 stars REGGAETON CD .......2006-09-13

Ok I am cool with the reggaeton sound and the movement but this guy goes and gives us an ENTIRE cd of reggaeton. Gone are the days of NORE the rapper he COMPLETELY flips the script on this cd and I didnt see it coming, thats all I am saying. He didnt have any singles for reason.
