OHM+ : the early gurus of electronic music

Special Edition 3CD + DVD

Leaps in technology: oscillators, generators, vacuum tubes, amplifiers, transistors, magnetic tape, integrated circuits, and the microchip— inspired new instruments: the telharmonium, theremin, ondes martenot, electronic sackbut, clavivox, electronium, moog synthesizer, and computers— and artists everywhere hungry for new modes of expression.

This collection is a humble but bold attempt to give form to the wonderful, multi-directional, inevitable birth of electronic music.

"Many of the ideas in this collection have now been so completely assimilated into popular listening that it may sometimes be hard to remember how surprising it all was on first outing. Some of it still sounds pretty exotic. These CDs are important as part of the story of how we got to where we are now-the cultural conversation so far-and as a still fruitful repertoire of future possibilities." —from the Foreword by Brian Eno

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

Back in 2000, Ellipsis Arts released OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music, a fantastic and essential three CD set tracing the evolution of "electronica" from Messiaen, Cage, and Xenakis to Schulze, Eno, and Hassell. This set was recently reissued (as OHM+) along with a bonus DVD (which is thankfully now available separately for those of us who already have the CDs.) You can read plenty of excellent reviews of the original 3CD set on Amazon (and elsewhere), so I'm going to focus on the new DVD in this review.

The OHM+ DVD is jam-packed with over two hours of archival and more recent footage that runs the gamut from engrossing to mildly interesting to unwatchably dull.

If seemingly endless "talking head" interviews with Milton Babbitt and Bebe Barron are your idea of video entertainment, you've come to the right place. An interview with John Cage digitally altered beyond all recognition? Check. Swirling psychadelic colored dyes right out of a Saucerful of Secrets-era Pink Floyd concert? No problem.

There are some tastier goodies to be found on this DVD, however...

The segments with Clara Rockmore and Leon Theremin have an appealingly amateurish home movie quality to them. It's also a real treat to see the 1978 footage of underappreciated minimalist guru David Borden and Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company "on the road" hauling around their truckload of big old analog synthesizer equipment. Laurie Spiegel is fun to watch as she tinkers with a big grey metal box called a "Concerto Generator" with an extremely serious expression on her face. And Alvin Lucier's "Music for Solo Performer," where he hooks up wires to his head and produces sounds using his brainwaves and two tympani, simply must be seen to be believed.

The Pixar-ish computer animation accompanying Paul Lansky's "The Dust Bunny" is sort of cute, but it goes on for about 10 minutes too long. Surely most of the OHM target audience already has the DVD of Steve Reich's Three Tales, but it's nice that they included the best part - the ominous yet goofy "Dolly" segment. Many have also probably seen Hans Fjellestad's documentary Moog before, but the six minute excerpt provided here is really about all you need.

It's too bad there isn't a more interesting John Cage segment, and regrettable that there aren't any Stockhausen videos (those would certainly be a riot!)

Overall, though, while the OHM+ DVD is not as consistently engaging as the CD set of the same name, it is a worthy companion to it. And if you don't have either of them yet, the complete OHM+ 3-CD & DVD "special edition" box set is a no-brainer.

This package is mind boggling. The DVD includes over 2 hours of rare footage too. If you want to know about the roots of electronic music, look no further.

For being one of the edgier musicians out there, bassist and producer Bill Laswell has had a long time relationship with things new age, drawing upon spiritual as much as musical traditions from across the world, including India, Africa, and Bali. Albums in his Divination and Sacred Systems series all speak to alternate belief systems and are rife with religious imagery. Despite that, he's avoided the new age scarlet letter and maintained a reputation as an avant-garde provocateur. You can hear why on Asana's Ohm Shanti, Vol. 4. Although a title like that gets him placed in the front bin of the new age section, the music is prototypical Laswell, full of relentless grooves and dub bass lines that throb like a brothel in heat. Indian singers, including Kiran Ahluwalia, Ustad Sultan Khan, Fulguni Shah, and Asha Puthli, intone hymns to Shiva on expansive tracks you won't hear in a Hindu temple. Karsh Kale joins Laswell on most of the album, syncing up his tabla drums with Laswell's menacing grooves. There's a bit of Laswell's slapdash approach here and tracks like the title piece tend to go on too long. But texturally expansive atmospheres with ululating melodies ricocheting across the insistent grooves like kamikaze fighters make Ohm Shanti a compelling journey. That is, until the last track, a rendition of the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun," which is uncharacteristically straight and cheesy for Laswell and longtime associate Robert Musso, who plays guitar. Excepting that, Ohm Shanti propels you on an Indian dance floor of the imagination. --John Diliberto

4 out of 5 stars Great...But Buyer Beware..........2006-06-20

The music on this CD is spectacular...just the sort of bass-driven genius one expects from Mr. Laswell. BUT, if you're like me, and prefer this sort of music to be vocal-free, then you are in for a rude surprise. While the outer packaging gives no clue, there is not one track on the CD that is vocal-free. If you don't mind vocals (or in fact like them) then by all means consider this a 5 star review. But if you don't want vocals with your Bill Laswell music, you may find the vocals on this CD to be extremely annoying. So buyer beware.

the 4th instalment in the meta collection, again compilled by bill laswell. but unlike all the rest the entire album is written my laswell, karsh kale, ustad sultan khan, & eastern singers. this is more like a full album than a bunch of collected songs by various artists. the first 2 are more cheb i sabbah style, more traditional with laswell dub bass. 3 is a new version of asha from asana 3 but very original. mukti #4 is a completelly new song with a more tabla beat science feel to it with karsh playing acoustic drums & ustad playing the sarangi, best song from laswell in a while. #5 is an all traditional song from another album only 1:23. #6 is another upbeat heavelly eastern indian influinced dub song. balama #7 is heavily electronic influinced, just like eraldo bernocchi & mick harris were on this, straight outa veve. as does the pattern relaese #8 but more oscillations style melding into a version of here comes the sun (vocaless) by the beatles written by harrison, utalizing more eastern sounds & robert musso joining on guitar to play the lead lines, very simmilar to original no dub remix here.
so this is the perfect reason to sit back relaz & enjoy some very soothing sounds for the soul. what ever your relaxation be, yoga, meditation, herbal, drink, martial arts, this will set you free.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite fusion cd.......2006-12-27

I don't like FUSION as a rule, but this is one of the most amazing cd's in my collection. After only a few listens, this has gone to the top of may current favourites and has made me a FUSION fan. Amazing compositions, amazing virtuosity and a subtlety that is totaly unexpected from this former MEGADEATH guitarist. Not one boring track and as many highlights as most fusion players whole catalogue of releases. He plays for the listener and not for himself. This is not a display of guitar wizzardry, but some of the most cohesive musical ideas amongst my fusion cd's. He has all the chops ( and than some ), but does not play to prove it, but instead lets the musik speak for itself. LIKE THE GUITAR / LIKE MUSIK / BUY IT NOW !!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Superb sophomore fusion album.......2006-02-09

Ohm's first album was amazing. So if you haven't heard it yet and are even the least bit interested in instrumental fusion music, you should immediately check it out. Come back to Amino Acid Flashback only after you've fully immeresed yourself in their first effort. That way, you'll get to see how different their new work is and how much growth it has to offer, both musically and compositionally.

Here is what Chris Poland wrote down in the booklet of his new album:

"This record consists of 25 years of blood, sweat and tears. This record is us doing both a 180 degree turn-around and a full 360 degree circle. This record is our heart and soul, our convictions and everything we stand for."

Fair enough, don't you think? You'll definitely agree after you hear the CD though. The songs here are generally shorter but all the more powerful and, dare I say, personal. Though all the way fusion-inspired, the album still breaks any conventional boundaries of the genre. For a start, it's packed with some of the biggest grooves and rock-solid rhythms you'll hear. Poland's long-time friend Robby Pagliari is a monster on his 6-string fretless bass. His low and deep bass lines flat-out rock the album opener "DaVinci" setting the tone. Famed Cream drummer Ginger Baker's son Kofi Baker is on drums. Baker is equally astounding as his father, but he's chosen to explore a different, more adventurous musical territory. His groovy cymbal beats on "William's Amino Acid Flashback" or the swift percussion work on "Icarus Falls" are proof that he is simply out of this world. On top of that, he has a killer drum tone, one I wish many other fusion and jazz drummers tried out. Fat and full, but never flashy. His polyrhthmic drive on the textured "Spun" is perhaps my favourite on the album.

Chris Poland still has that trademark searing tone he's been known to use since he did that amazing Damn the Machine album. Once again, his playing on this disc is flawless, showcasing his unmistakable tone and instantly recognizable legato phrasing. His writing is on a totally different level on Amino Acid Flashback. This time it's all about writing good songs, that both rock and reach deep down anyone's soul. Dexterity is only relied on if the song really calls for it, otherwise things are strictly kept within a certain compositional context. Besides his fluid playing on the song "Tara", the piece also stands out because of its killer 'chorus' parts. Poland dabbles with heavier and slower jazz on the elegiac title track and dreamy "Rooms of Telemetry", while on "What If...", he juxtaposes ghostly bends with impeccable vibrato. This man always had killer vibrato, but this album sees him reaching the top. On the aforementioned "Icarus Falls", Poland elicits a million textures out of his guitar and lets his outstanding pitch do the talking.

This is a step ahead of the already amazing debut album, but one can only expect good things from Mr Chris Poland anyway. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars VIRTUOSO MASTERPIECE.......2005-12-23

I have seen these brilliant & talented men play 20-30 times in the last few yrs locally in Los Angeles - mostly at the Baked Potato (www.thebakedpotato.com) which is a great venue. It's like hearing them in your living room. The venue is great, the vibes are great - AND OHM is STELLAR.

All three of these fine musicians excel in their own way. Hearing them live and up close lets you appreciate exactly how complex their work is.

Seeing Chris Poland play lead is amazing, listening to Kofi's drums is fantastic and watching Robby master his fretless bass, in my mind, is beyond comprehension!

Not to take away from the others, because they are fabulous, but I can't understand how Robby coaxes those powerful and delicate sounds from a big bulky bass.

As good as this CD sounds - which is great - it's even better live - obviously.

Oh yes, I almost forgot to mention, unlike many in this genre, these guys actually write interesting and creative music which combined with their masterful musical talent makes them a rare find in my book.

I HIGHLY recommend this CD for anyone even remotely into this type of music! 5 stars ++ - two thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Fusion with a groove..........2005-11-26

Trying to catorgize OHMs sound is kind of tough. Their music has melody and grooves along nicely without the atonal muck you get with some "jazz fusion" bands. In the past I usually listened to guitar instrumentals (Satch, Vai, ect). Chris Polands guitar work to me is much more subtle and more interesting. His harmonies are usually very catchy and different. Add to that some great fretless bass and complex drumming via Pag.(?) and K. Baker (Gingers son) and you have actual listenable fusion. I am more of a fan of their first CD, however they are both excellent. For more in a hard-rock vein try 'Return to Metalopolis' by Chris.

5 out of 5 stars 2 reviews of OHM:'s Amino Acid Flashback.......2005-11-19

1. I held the new cd in my hand with some unexpected trepidation, realizing just how high my expectations for this release had soared. As it turns out, I needn't have been nervous. Chris Poland (guitar), Robertino Pagliari (bass) & Kofi Baker (drums) have taken care of business on this record in amazing fashion. To paraphrase a rock critic's title of an article written about another band many years ago: If you don't like OHM:, you're wrong.

"Amino Acid Flashback" is a creative, well-written package of 11 songs, delivered with seamless interplay and absolute virtuosity. As the liner notes explain, this music is the culmination of the time and times these guys have spent individually and collectively, growing, learning, and finding common ground to communicate with one another. The more I listen to this record, the more I hear - an attribute this new cd shares with their first self-titled studio effort. There are references to OHM:'s past (DaVinci, Icarus Falls) that are revealed fresh and anew, songs that impact you with their immediacy (Skint, Spun), and works that take the listener to new places (What If, Rooms of Telemetry).

At various points during this record, each instrument- guitar, bass, drums- becomes a lead instrument. They have the taste and chops to pull this off as soloists, but just as impressively, the two who lay back as the third takes off on an incredible excursion lay down context for the solo to come from within, and propel the musical theme so as not to lose the listener. This is exceptional songwriting as well as playing. Robertino Pagliari shows his mastery of the six string fretless bass, and his mind-blowing dexterity in both conventional and radically different bottom end expression. Pag's bass is an integral part of the band's sound and personality. This album marks the first studio release featuring the now-entrenched Kofi Baker as keeper of the beat, with high energy throughout. His drumming is both the lynchpin and an inspiration to the others, and his mark is evident and welcome, as all fans of the band have noted from the "Live at KPFK" cd, and OHM:'s live shows over the past two years. As for Chris Poland, his output continues to create joy and amazement. Great hooks, immediately recognizable tone, timing and feel, liquid waterfall solos where the beginning, middle or end cannot be anticipated, wonderfully out-of-left-field rhythm work, fun with the octaver, univibe, ring modulator, distortion unit, wah, so many squeaks, wonks, squeals, bells, chirps... where does it end (Hopefully never)? Chris is a singular musician, not just a shredder, or an effects freak, jazz snob or avant-garde experimentalist. His vision is fully formed but continues to encompass the new experiences that make him a compelling artist. Chris has game, and this game should be documented in its' entirety by the so-called "industry publications"- Guitar Player, Guitar World, Jazz Times, Jazziz, Hittin' the Note, etc.

Many times I think of OHM: as the Cream of the new millennium, obvious Kofi connection aside, the ultimate JazzRockBluesFusionPowerTrio, for those seeking to define or label it. They take recognized musical forms and turn them inside out, making them all their own, nodding to the past, creating urgency in the present, hinting at the future. Three musicians falling down the stairs and landing on their feet, yet coming together in a tight, unified, telepathy.

If there is a complaint after listening to "Amino Acid Flashback", it would be one: Not enough. Not nearly enough music from such talented artists. But we are grateful for what is received from guys who aren't able to do this for a living full-time. Are you listening, "music industry"? Probably not. Hopefully this release will be welcomed by a community of eager fans- fusion fans, instrumental fans, guitar fans, bass fans, drum fans, or just fans of good music. Those same fans should show their support right now by picking up this cd. OK?

    Album Description

Return to Metalopolis was the beginning of Chris Poland's solo career, after leaving multi-platinum artists, Megadeth, in 1987. The Return To Metalopolis disc has been a cult classic for years. Lion Music is proud to share with you the only known live moments on tape from the short-lived tour in support of this classic release. Recorded live in 1991 at the now defunct Mason Jar in Phoenix, Arizona, Return to Metalopolis Live is a chance for fans to see how this inventive material translated over into a live situation. The recording is as is and would be the beginning of the line-up that progressed into the band, Damn The Machine, who released their self titled disc in 1993 on A&M Records. Listening to Return To Metalopolis Live, shows how Chris' playing has evolved over the years, but it also shows that even back then he was pushing the boundaries of the guitar, with his trademark cutting tone and style. In addition to a couple of studio demo outtakes from past years, we thought it would be cool to include of OHM: performing a reworked version of the Metalopolis classic, 'Alexandria'.

From Back Cover: Hindu Scriptures tell us that Ohm is the storehouse of mystical power......Tantric Buddhist scriptures tell us that Ohm is the most powerful vibration......Ohm weaves through the body, washing away stress and static energy...echoing the rhythm of the soul and the temple memory of home....sounding from earth to heaven and heaven to earth. As the Ohm drone cradles you in a perpetual sunset, hear the story of creation as told through the wind....wind instruments and animals sounding...the heralding of the Armenian duduk, the haunting voice of the didgeridoo, the whisper of the Native American Flute, the whale's song....Your brain waves will be ineluctably altered. THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE OHM

5 out of 5 stars Getting "in tune" with Mother Earth.......2006-11-22

Listening to this CD is a comprehensive living experience. If you are quiet with it, and give it your attention, it will remind you of who you are and where you came from. The sounds and rhythmic patterning seem to come from within your own being and at the same from within the earth itself, the sea itself, the vibratory life of the planet. It effects you on the deepest level. The creator of this music is obviously a gifted musician and has a deep relationship with the world we live in, below and beyond the frenzy of day to day. She has gifted us with a clear reminder of what "makes us tick" in our innermost heartscapes.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful music for meditation and relaxation.......2006-11-09

I love this CD and my clients do too! It's great music for bodywork, meditation and relaxation. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best in meditation and relaxation music!.......2005-02-05

This CD was a gift to me on my graduation from massage school, from a friend who is an acupuncturist. I regularly use it in my practice (as does my friend), and have found absolutely no other music that produces the profound relaxation effect that this does.

There is a deep, subtle drone throughout the CD, which I understand to be the vibratory sound of the planet Earth. Each track includes a different theme of Life on this planet. Together, the effect is hypnotic, haunting, uplifting, relaxing, spiritual, expanding, and meditative. It is also simply beautiful music.

Clients who have heard this for the first time during a massage will often dreamily comment afterward, "Wow! What WAS that?!" I often find myself "zoning in" to the music, and have given my best massages while this CD was playing.

I also listened to this recently while having dental work done, and by the time I left, the dentist wanted copies for the office, and for use during airline flights.

There's really no way to describe it adequately, and it's a shame there are no sound clips here to give an idea of what it sounds like. My only disappointment is that it is less than an hour long; I find myself wanting more.

Not recommended for use while driving. Strongly recomended for use in meditation, or for relaxation!

      Product Description

Sound Healer and Composer Marjorie de Muynck first envisioned a piece of music in the healing key of Ohm in 2002 and formed the ambient musical collective Analemma. As a Sound Healing Instructor, students asked Marjorie to create a CD they could play during treatments that would harmonize with Ohm Tuning Forks. There’s No Place Like Ohm, a pioneering work in the musical and earth based key of Ohm, was released in 2003. There’s No Place Like Ohm Vol. 2 can be described as a spiritual symphony, a nature operetta that tells a story with a beginning, middle and end. The hypnotic Ohm drone is the transporting vehicle. Because the Ohm tone is of the earth, it is intrinsically soothing and centering. Ohm is a vibration; it is inaudibly present in all of nature, alive in the wind and in the voices of the plant and animal world. The presence of the Ohm drone is supportive in the sense that it is simultaneously grounding and freeing as it carries you on this transformational Sound Journey. In the literal heart of this Sound Journey, you will experience the watery, rhythmic expression of the Blue Whale and the high frequency sounding of the Orca. Birds from North America and Africa contribute their song, familiar, exotic, and haunting. And finally, crickets summon a feeling of expansiveness, when dusk arrives and day transitions to night. Percussion instruments were intentionally not used in this composition which aims instead to feature the rhythms and pulses of the natural world. Wind instruments made of wood were chosen because of their unique ability to evoke nature; the clarinet and Native American flute for their ability to mimic bird songs and their flight, the didgeridoo for its serpentine and earthy rhythm and tone, and the Middle Eastern oud for its ability to conjure up images of landscape, sand and sun. The African kora is a gourd, a string instrument, and when played, gorgeously summons the feeling of sunlight and rain, while the warm and restful tone of the harmonica and drone interweave creating a resonance with the world of winged creatures.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Invigorating.......2006-10-18

I have been meaning to review this c.d. for a couple of weeks since I first got it. A friend recommended this c.d. to me so I purchased it and I definitely am SUPER glad that I did.

I put this c.d. on and INSTANTLY I felt more centered, relaxed and peaceful. I actually had the volume up quite loudly and I could feel the vibrations and the "center" of the music. It was like I was floating. It instantly relaxed me.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something that is relaxing who doesn't like "frog" sounds or "thunder" storms. This is truly inspired by science and works. It will truly re-center you and give you "new life."

      I rate 5 stars out of 5!

I can't wait to buy the tuning forks to go with this! :)

5 out of 5 stars There's No Place Like Ohm.......2006-01-14

Ohm is a sacred syllable or mantra explained in the Upanishads as standing for the whole earth and all its past, present and future. It is from this primal vibration that all manifestation issues forth. It can be heard as the sound of one's own nervous system. Ohm is inwardly transformed into light which draws one to the God Consciousness. You will learn to recognize it as an encounter with the Divine that lives within all creatures, within you; within all existance. Is there any wonder when I play this volume written in the the key of Ohm in my clinic, my clients fall into a deep relaxation of both mind and body? They find a place within themselves where genuine healing occurs. Treat yourself to this journey into sound healing. Buy it! You'll like it! Diane Crowne, L.Ac.

5 out of 5 stars Tone poetry that soothes the soul.......2006-01-13

This, and it's companion CD, "There's No Place Like Om (Vol 1)", are the only CD's I listen to on a daily basis. Remeniscent to me of such landmark work as "Paul Horn: Inside the TajMahal" and "Wendy Carlos: Sonic Seasonings", "There's No Place Like Om" is a timeless work of musical skill and insight.

The intermingling of musical instruments and nature sounds somehow taps into our body's own internal vibrations, and allows for a soothing relaxation, while taking the mind on a gentle journey. It is my musical choice at night when my mind is racing with the internal chatter of the day. This music, this tone poetry, is like a sonic tonic to quiet the mind and soothe the soul.

5 out of 5 stars No Label Here!.......2007-07-06

Om to Ohm defies labeling....it's in a category all it's own! Just when you think you're onto where the music's taking you, the sound shifts gears and you find yourself on a different path. Either in your home relaxed and listening to each track evolve, or driving in your car rockin' out...Life in Balance takes you on a hip trip!

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner From Life In Balance.......2007-05-27

The duo of Steve & Ami Scuilli, who started quietly and serenely with "Deeper," retain the beauty of their original conception while evolving musically, no mean feat.

"Om To Ohm" will not only appeal to their older fans, but builds upon Steve's synth playing in "Star," and adds energy to their meditative sounds, making "Om To Ohm" a total body immersion. Like their other CDs, "Om To Ohm" sounds great in headphones, although you may be too busy dancing to wear them.

This is by no means simply "yoga" or "body-work" music-"Om To Ohm" will take you on a journey that will be comfortably familiar to fans of Pink Floyd, the Moody Blues, Popul Vuh, Gong, and other progressive bands. One of the best CDs of 2007!

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world!.......2007-05-18

Every Life in Balance CD is an aid to greater consciousness. Put this CD on, dim the lights, lay down and you will be amazed to find your body mind and spirit touched through their sound. You will be transformed!
