Customer Reviews:
Festive, at times Ecstatic Dixieland.......2005-07-03
This is an instant mood elevator. A smashing, original and utterly delightful album which captures the joyful quality of New Orleans jazz even though it's not from New Orleans. Put this music on and dance! It's rich, endlessly varied, fresh and even a little sweet-- and packed with glorious energy. Can't recommend it enough. When you're listening to this, you're on Bourbon Street no matter where you are. This is one you'll want to share with others -- a dynamite gift for just about anybody.
Great album but songs not same as LP.......2003-09-06
I can highly recommend this CD because the songs are all great. But I was disappointed that it included only ONE song from the original Midnight in Moscow LP. After much research, I found another English import CD that has seven of the original eleven songs from the Midnight LP, "Back at the Start". I haven't ordered it yet but hope it is close to the LP version.
Good, happy Dixieland jazz........2003-04-16
First of all, this is not Kenny Ball's original album with "Midnight In Moscow" (1962)--that original album (on vinyl) had a different cover and a different selection of songs. This collection has all his UK hits from 1961-1967, plus others. I like every song I've ever heard by Kenny Ball, and this album is no exception. His band tends to play authentic sounding Dixieland jazz, with banjo instead of guitar, and the songs tend to be lively, technically proficient, and have tasteful solos. "Midnight In Moscow" with its haunting minor key sound was a hit single in 1962, which is how I first became familiar with the band, and some of these standard songs like "Sukiyaki" and "Rondo" go back so far that I probably wasn't even born when they first appeared. "Saturday Night" (a live blues recording) has a particularly interesting banjo solo. Ordinarily such a thin, twangy banjo solo borders on being laughable, but the melodic notes here were chosen so well that the solo stands out as one of the better solos on the album. In general, this is good quality, lively, happy Dixieland jazz with universal appeal.
Literally changed my musical interests for life..........2002-01-05
No kidding, it did, from note one. That was over 40 years ago. Then, as now when you hear the group start into "Midnight in Moscow," you know something quite unique is afoot. (I love to watch people's reactions.)
It's the infectious energy the young Brits in the band pour into their work and Ball's trademark bell-like trumpet sound, uncannily spot-on, always. Hearing this odd treatment of the sadly beautiful Russian folk melody... well, it works! It was and is magic.
But it isn't just one song or one album. It's in all their work. You don't find the long obligatory solos that so often mar the Dixieland performance. There are short solos and they are brilliant but Ball and the band are unique in the way they just get together and COOK. It's hard to not get involved. I especially like their cover of tunes that are not the traditional Dixie fare.
And finally, I wouldn't easily believe they are reading music. It's seems they are playing music, not vice versa. In my view, this is a very high degree of musicianship. The listener knows right away if you fail.

Album Description
Budget-priced box featuring 40(!) digitally remastered CDs that serve up 727 of the best jazz recordings from the late '20s to the '50s, giving listeners an abundance of material from the top practitioners of the classic jazz styles Swing, Big Band and Be-Bop. Most of the discs contain only recordings by one artist, but with some of the stars --like Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, Django Reinhardt, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins for instance-- you get a double dose! For anyone interested in curious about the formative years of jazz, or for anyone looking to build a quality jazz library without spending a fortune, this collection is a must have. Housed in a sealed, full color 5' x 6' x 8' box, it contains 20 double slimline jewel cases. Artist Listing: Roy Eldridge (2 CDs)
Customer Reviews:
A Good Mix of Jazz at a Reasonable Price.......2003-05-16
The History label has put out several box sets of 40 jazz CDs. I have three and plan to buy more.
Compared to the other two History label box sets I have, The Cradle of Jazz and The Big Band Box, the recordings in From Swing to Bebop are more recent than the other two, and so the sound quality is also markedly improved, although by no means flawless by today's standards.
As in the other two, this box set gives a good overview of the leading musicians of the time with two CDs by each of Charlie Parker, Django Reinhardt, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, and three CDs of music by Fats Navarro. Notably absent is bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie, although Gillespie can be heard on a few of the tracks featuring other musicians.
This collection is heavier on swing than it is with bebop, and purists would probably find fault with some of the selections and ommissions. However, given the price, I think any jazz fan can easily supplement gaps left behind in From Swing to Bebop and still save a bundle of cash as compared to trying to buy the music by all of these artists individually.

When popular music was good, and good music popular.......2002-11-10
As a youngster some 25 years ago I was fortunate enough to have a neighbor who had records of big band music that he shared.
Long evenings spent listening in my attic room as the old tube amplified record player would reproduce big band music faithfully through a big, old Wurlitzer jukebox speaker. Miller, Goodman, Dorsey, Herman, Armstrong, and others educated me in the art of the big band. For hours on end I would listen to the music pouring forth from the big speaker, and on warm evenings when my window was open the neighbors would also. If I recall correctly I even got requests.
In both repertoire and sonics the "Big Band Box" easily holds its own against the compilations from Time Life, Longines Symphonette Society, Readers Digest, and various others.
The artists picked are some of the most influential of the Swing Era- Benny Goodman, who is credited with starting the big band era circa 1935. Duke Ellington, who is truly an artist "Beyond category." Chick Webb- the harlem dynamo who gave Ella Fitzgerald her start with a Big Band. Fletcher Henderson- a genius whose arrangements often had multiple layers some on top, but others not revealing themselves until multiple listenings. Gene Krupa- the giant of percussion who is still one of the most revered drummers today.
Harry James- The child prodigy from a circus family whose best work was electrifying, but descended into alcoholism and gambling, but stayed true to his craft up until the end. His last recordings revealed a purity of tone and melody that denied he only had weeks to live...
The music selections are also excellant, and reveal a real sensitivty of the big bands real flavorings. A mixture of old chestnuts and seldom heard tunes provide a glimpse of what the music may have sounded like during a club date or radio program. This is a refreshing contrast to the usual "Best of" albums which are often reissued today, which often descend almost to parody, indicating that a band only had perhaps ten songs they played. In reality, the musicians and performers of the big band era were incredibly versatile and productive. This collection allows the neophyte a chance to hear what it was like during those incredible years, and even allows this old amateur disc jockey a few surprise numbers.
The sound quality is really quite good, with the almost total elimination of surface noise. Almost all the Big band recordings were made directly to disc, this was before the adoption of analog tape as a recording medium. The equalization is also very good and sounds very natural and musical. The quality of these old monaural recordings has rarely sounded as good as this.
Liner notes have a summary of each of the covered artists lives as well as their careers. Also the session dates as well as the arrangers and performers are also listed.
May I suggest for future releases that the company include some information on the audio restoration process used. To my untrained ear the restoration is very similar to the "Cedar" process, it would be nice to know what process was used. On the next issuing perhaps they could include some live performances, as like the bands of today, big bands come most alive when they interact with their audiences.
Nit picking aside, if one has even a modicum of interest in Swing music then this set is an absolute bargain, and a must have. We all know that in movies the sequel is seldom the equal of the original. It is often so in music as well. That which was done well originally is difficult to equal, let alone surpass. The time in which this music was created is long gone, as are most of the people who created it. Yet their legacy lives on and has seldom shone greater in recent years than on this "Big Band Box."
Also I recommend the "Cradle of Jazz" set as does reviewer jka1215- ASIN: B00004S7HQ.
An education in big band music.......2001-05-03
With well over 40 hours of music from around forty artists I feel enlighted from this collection.
I'm a new comer to the jazz scene and although listening to one collection won't put me shoulder to shoulder with the experts, it's a pretty good start.
Thanks to this collection, I am familiar with the styles of very famous big band names such as Benny Goodman and Cab Calloway, but also with artists I had never heard of such as Woody Herman and Stan Kenton.
Some of the music on these CDs is great, but some is pretty forgettable, while some is downright irritating. But due to the scope of the project this almost goes without saying.
The sound quality is generally acceptable and since the cost is only around a buck and a half per CD, even if you only like a tenth of the songs, you've gotten your money's worth.
Speaking for myself, I feel like I have taken a crash course in American pops from when my grandma was a young person and from this perspective, I'm really glad I bought it.
Great Deal.......2001-04-09
Nearly 40 hours of digitally remastered original 78s and 45s for less than $1 each. No, you aren't getting the 1000 greatest hits of the 30s & 40s, but this is a great collection, but at 10% of the price, you get a lot of standards.
Also see the similarly priced "Cradle of Jazz" and "Great Vocalists of Jazz and Entertainment" collections by the German "History" label.

A Godsend.......2006-02-24
"Louis and the Good Book" is an incredibly wonderful album. Mr. Armstrong's singing and trumpet work is just fantastic and the piano work on Shadrack is just amazing. In addition, there is a sense of playfulness, in both the words and the music, that is a delight to hear. I haven't checked out "Louis and The Angels" yet, but it's worth getting this album for Louis and the Good Book alone.
Yet another side of Louis.......2001-03-23
I just discovered this great MCA UK only 2 for 1 CD. Could there be more? This disc focuses on Louis' gospel and sacred side, one which is not always that apparent in his older recordings.
On "Louis And The Angels" (1957) he is accompanied by the Sy Oliver Orchestra and Choir who lean on the pop side, but in this case it works just fine. Billy Kyle, an All-Star staple, is on piano. You still have Louis' fantastic vocal delivery and trumpet flourishes as well. The choir of course adds an angelic quality that puts these songs in a different light than Louis' straight "good ol' good ones" jazz recordings. There's romance here too, with "You're A Heavenly Thing", "When Did You Leave Heaven" and "I Married An Angel". Louis is right at home with these tunes.
"Louis And The Good Book" (1958) reads much sweeter, with his All-Stars there to back him up, Trummy Young, Billy Kyle, Barrett Deams and others. Again the Sy Oliver Choir makes their appearance known as well. These sessions have a much heavier feel with meaningful tunes such as "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen" and "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", two subjects that Louis has dealt with his whole life. On the former, Louis' spoken introduction even makes an attempt to explain his choice to do this type of album. He tells of how there are times when you feel the need to look up. Funny, because as I listen I'm looking up at Louis right now and thanking him for yet another treasure.
