A HEARTY WELCOME TO "SEVENTEEN" & WELCOME BACK TO "HIGH BUTTON SHOES" . . . . .......2006-03-13
I've been a fan of HIGH BUTTON SHOES (and Nanette Fabray) ever since its broadcast on the NBC Television Network in 1956. I don't think I shall ever forget Phil Silvers shilling for the Ford Motor Company ("There's Nothing Like a Model T") or being pursued by a bunch of Mack Sennett cops and bathing beauties ("On a Sunday by the Sea" & "Bathing Beauty Ballet") or leading the hilarious collegiate pep song "Nobody Ever Died for Dear Old Rutgers"? Manys the time my sisters and I would harmonize to the two lovely ballads for the ingénues -- "You're My Girl" and "Can't You Just See Yourself in Love with Me?" -- or the paens to mature romantic love -- "I Still Get Jealous" and "Papa, Won't You Dance with Me?" Fifty years later, they're still as fresh as ever.
RCA released the original cast recording on four 10-inch 78 rpm records. As a result, much of the score never made it to vinyl. In addition to the songs on this album, at least four others appeared in the show. Also missing, alas, is the overture and the "Bathing Beauty Ballet." The latter, at least, can be found on the original cast recording of JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY.
According to Steven Suskind, "SEVENTEEN is a prime example of what they used to call a 'summer musical.'" Listening to it brings back memories of ON MOONLIGHT BAY (also based on stories of Booth Tarkington) and other Doris Day/Gordon MacRae movies of the 50s, as well as fluffy MGM musicals like IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMER TIME and MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. Although there aren't any really outstanding songs, the score is, nonetheless, charming and pleasant. Perhaps this release of the score will spark an interest in community and high school theaters. Nostalgia is never out of style, and we all want to believe that there once was a time when the biggest problems we had to face was a date for the junior prom or whether our pies would win first prize at the State Fair.
Who needs any more reality? Give me the halcyon days before the Great Depression and WWI. Give me bucolic scenes on the front porches of rural America. Give me wholesomeness and innocence. Give me con men selling swamp land and musical instruments. Give me young lovers nervous about their first kiss. Give me an old married couple - anytime - who still love each other enough to get jealous.
Hats off to Sepia for this wonderful reissue. (Why RCA, rather than this English record company, hasn't seen fit to make these recordings available is a mystery.) Although Sepia used original 78 rpm records as the source of these recordings, the sound quality is excellent. Perhaps the sound would have been better and the recordings more complete if RCA had used the original master tapes is must certainly have in its vaults, but until the time that this happens, we can all be grateful to Sepia.
For excellent background to SEVENTEEN and HIGH BUTTON SHOES, please check out THE INSIDER item, "CDs: Papa, Won't You Dance With Me" by Ken Mandelbaum on www.Broadway.com. Also Steven Suskind's ON THE RECORD: High Button Shoes, Seventeen, etc. on www.playbill.com. Fascinating stuff.
PS. While I'm ragging on RCA, I'd like to recommend two shows with their feet in Americana, both based on plays by Eugene O'Neill and both with fine scores by Bob Merrill: NEW GIRL IN TOWN and TAKE ME ALONG. Come on RCA, bring them back!!!! (As well as FANNY, WISH YOU WERE HERE, 110 IN THE SHADE, DO RE MI, LITTLE ME, etc.)

Sadly truncated but delightful recording.......2004-10-27
I just want to echo the praises of the previous posters. This is one of Jule Styne's finest early scores, and this album is worth is just for the fabulous Nanette Fabray and the hilarious Phil Silvers. What a shame that this recording has been out of print for years and exceedingly scarce.
In response to yaakov, I wanted to list the other RCA recordings that have been discontinued. The poster originally mentioned just Broadway recordings, but I thought I'd list all the out-of-print RCAs, in addition to the other OBC's the poster missed. They are: Avenue X, City of Angels (OLC), the '96 London revival of Company, Chess (OBC), Goodtime Charley, Grease! (with Brooke Shields), Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway in Hello, Dolly!, Legs Diamond, A Little Night Music (OLC), Pacific Overtures (OLC), Silk Stockings, Sophisticated Ladies, Starting Here, Starting Now (OC), Whoop-Dee-Doo, Wings, Your Own Thing, and recently, Saratoga, the revival of The Most Happy Fella, and Marie Christine have also been deleted by RCA.
Wonderful show - wonderful cast........2004-07-07
I thank Mark-Andrew Lawrence for the background he provided for HIGH BUTTON SHOES.
Personally, I think the score is absolutely wonderful, even though only eight numbers are available from the original show. I defy anyone not to be enchanted by "Can't You Just See Yourself In Love With Me?" "There's Nothing Like A Model T," "You're My Girl," "Get Away For A Day In The Country," "Papa, Won't You Dance With Me?" "On A Sunday By The Sea," "I Still Get Jealous, and "Nobody Ever Died For Dear Old Rutgers."
Moreover, we need to preserve whatever recordings exist of Nanette Fabray (Sony discontinued MR. PRESIDENT) and Phil Silvers (RCA did the same to DO RE MI.) Perhaps we could persuade RCA to go back to its vaults to see if the rest of the score exists. If not, they could remaster what they have and include the related material from JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY. Oh, Yes. And include liner notes and a listing of who sings what. (RCA has done a great job with the HELLO, DOLLY and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF reissues.)
HIGH BUTTON SHOES is only one of the many, many fine Broadway cast recordings RCA has discontinued. Maybe if enough of us make ourselves heard, they might be convinced to bring these albums back: 110 IN THE SHADE, ALLEGRO, DARLING OF THE DAY, DO RE MI, FANNY, HAPPY HUNTING, JAMAICA, Lincoln Center's KISMET, LITTLE ME, ME AND JULIET, MILK AND HONEY, NEW GIRL IN TOWN, Al Carmines' PROMENADE, TAKE ME ALONG, WILDCAT, WISH YOU WERE HERE. Have I overlooked some?
Anyway, I really love HIGHBUTTON SHOES.
P.S. Check out my lists of deleted shows. Unfortunately AMAZON doesn't have ASIN numbers for MR. PRESIDENT, WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN, WHOOP-UP, TENDERLOIN, ALL AMERICAN, THE GRAND TOUR, MAGDALENA, PICKWICK (Broadway OC), and the original DRAT! THE CAT! They would make up a third list.
Sgt Bilko on Broadway.......2002-03-08
Long before launching his hit TV show, Phil Silvers starred as a con-man in this hit musical comedy from 1947. HIGH BUTTON SHOES had a score by Jule Styne and was fairly well received by the critics who singled out Silvers and co-star Nanette Fabray for their performances.
RCA Victor recorded these 8 selections by the original cast members shortly after the opening night. The album was not issued on LP until the budget label RCA Camden put it out in 1958... and in 1965 RCA Victor re-released it (at full price) in both mono and electronic stereo formats. Since then the score has languished in the vaults. It is the RCA Camden master that was used for this CD edition. Unfortunately the original liner notes (with a detailed plot synopsis by Stanley Green) were not included with the CD. Nor does the track listing indicate who is singing on each track. The sound quality is good, high fidelity mono (some slight surface noise from the original 78s can still be heard) but still very dated. The show itself was dated even in 1947 and will probably never be revived. Best track is Nanette Fabray's "Pappa Won't You Dance With Me."
Some people have stated that this Cd contains only excerpts from a full recording. No. RCA's original 78 RPM set was just 4-10" records and the 8 songs here are that full album. For more of HIGH BUTTON SHOES, the overture is included on RCA's collection of Jule Styne Overtures, and a longer version of "I Still Get Jealous" and the full "Bathing Beauty Ballet" are heard on the Cd JEROME ROBBINS BROADWAY.

Carols of Christmas Past.......2003-12-24
If you're tired of Christmas songs after hearing so many of the same ones over and over and are ready for something new here is the solution.
Zola Van's beautiful melodies give the Christmas spirit a new dimension. Carols from past centuries, seemingly lost in time, are brought to the present and surely must sound more beautiful than ever before.
These selectins are calming and soothing to the nerves. Highlights here are "Huron Carol", "The Boar's Head Carol" and "The Dutch Carol". But every song is played with remarkable excellence. For those longing to hear something more familiar, the timeless carol "Silent Night" completes this magnificent set of piano solos.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-11-08
When I slipped "Carol: A Christmas Journey" into my CD player, I expected to hear a collection of the usual Christmas pieces and carols with Zola Van's inspired solo piano interpretation. She had told me that this album was going to be different, and different it is! What sets "Carol" apart from other collections is the darkness and moodiness of the album. At first, it seemed almost bleak, but the more I listen, the more I hear the hope and anticipation in the music. Most of the carols are extremely old, going as far back as the twelfth century, and come from various European countries and traditions (one is Indian/Canadian). Van really did her homework on this album, researching the origins of the music as she collected the songs, and writing a short history of each piece in the liner notes. With all of the Christmas music I listen to and teach, I was amazed that I was familiar with only a small number of the carols, and because the collection is so unusual, I would think it would be easy to listen to it year-round without feeling silly about playing a Christmas album in, say, April while you're preparing your taxes!
The three familiar carols are "Coventry Carol," "Bring a Torch Jeanette, Isabella," and "Silent Night," all played lovingly true to the originals, but with fresh interpretations. "A Virgin Most Pure," is a hauntingly beautiful carol that tells of the prophecy and of three journeys to Bethlehem. Van's use of heavy chords in the deep bass of the piano accentuates the mystery and darkness of many of the pieces, this one included. "Children's Song of the Nativity" is a bit lighter, full of innocence and questions about traveling to Bethlehem - how far is it? what will we do when we get there? - a very sweet vignette. My favorite track is probably the darkest one of all, "Huron Carol". The words come from Huron droning, and were set to an Indian/Canadian tune by a Jesuit missionary who taught the Huron and Wendot in a wilderness outpost in Quebec. Van does an exquisite job with this piece - to the point that you can almost feel the chilling winds blowing through it. "The Boar's Head Carol" is a bit lighter and more festive. "The Dutch Carol" comes from about 1599, and is delicate, melancholy, and very beautiful. "Ding Dong Merrily on High" is probably the most upbeat piece - a dance that servants and peasants would perform for their employers' entertainment.
A very unusual collection of holiday music, "Carol" is certainly an antidote for too much Santa Claus. It makes you realize how far back our holiday traditions go, and the vastly different ways in which Christ's birth has been celebrated over the centuries. Historically, this is a fascinating collection - I learned so much from the liner notes. Musically, it is a spiritual and introspective journey to hear these haunting melodies played with such care and emotion. Zola Van has done an outstanding job with this album. Just be aware that this is not a happy-go-lucky album of "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."
Really Big Shoes.......2003-11-01
What I liked most was the powerful, suspenseful style of play, swirling with emotion, her embellishing style radiating a natural grandeur. I also liked the way her arrangements seemed to get to the heart of these Christmas melodies without being too precious. Her realization seemed to be much more about integrating Christmas into her musical vision than about trying to be a part of the sweet, tinkling chorus we'll be hearing soon enough. And it should be noted that she applied her style to a relatively unusual selection of carols, so there were significant segments where I could enjoy Christmas music without it being something I've heard over and over.
I found her treatments to be both relaxing and moving. And mind you, this--with the stereo on the fritz and my boombox at Lost Pines with my wife on a training mission--was first heard on the tinkly little computer speakers. I soon had to graduate it to the DVD player in the den to get the full surround, but its power is evident whatever the volume or acoustics.
I like this one a lot.

Mystical Christmas Journey.......2003-10-19
"I am a simple traveler. I am transported adrift a gentle, melodic seduction across hundreds of years to this place. Here in a shroud of feudal protection is common man, with reasoning and conduct conforming to his day, desperately seeking beauty, purity, and gentleness in an otherwise brutal world. Beyond dark stone walls of medieval thought, the allure of the beautiful virgin and the child-king's humble birth is the cherished focus of desire and intrigue." ~Zola Van
I first heard Zola Van's radiant music on a CD titled "The HeartAid Project." Her music captures hope, wonder, kindness and beauty. The fluidity of the fragile notes are balanced by the strength and depth of the message. Crisp, delicate and heart-felt notes mingle with images of Christmas memories and dreams.
There are lesser-known carols you might be hearing for the first time and a few beloved favorites that have survived in the hearts and minds of people across the centuries.
1. A Virgin Most Pure - Poignant and delicate rendition of an Old English carol.
2. Coventry Carol: the Holy Innocents - A 16th Century English carol with familiar strains and has grief and love intertwined.
3. Children's Song of the Nativity - A piece filled with questions and expectation. "How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far. Shall we find the stable room lit by a star?" Zola plays this piece with precision and deep understanding. It is pure and beautiful.
4. Carol of the Birds is from Bas-Quercy, France. The peasants of the time told legends of enchanted animals who could speak on Christmas Eve. I can see birds swooping and soaring and following the "noel star."
5. The Wexford Carol is an Irish Carol known as the "Enniscorthy Carol."
6. Huron Carol is an Indian/Canadian tune - One of my favorites because it almost foretells sadness. Zola shows the full force of her interpretation as she alternates between spectacular lightness of hand and rich intensity. Zola has truly captured a moment in time with exquisite detail.
7. The Boar's Head Carol - A piece to take your breath away. The notes almost seem to be floating through the air like an invigorating breeze.
8. Joyeaux Noel - A French Carol sung at New Year's in the 1400s. Zola captures mystery and magic. You will recognize this sweet dream of new beginnings and hope for the future. This piece might delve into your memory and remind you of your most beautiful Christmas memories. I love how Zola tantalizes the listener with tiny raindrop notes and then just sends a downpour of notes to refresh your spirit.
9. Bring a Torch Jeanette, Isabella - A 15th Century French Provincial Carol with a playful twist. In the depth of night I can see little torches swirling in circles as Jeanette playfully dances instead of hurrying with the torches. There is a touch of humor here. It is as if time stops and this song could play forever.
10. The Dutch Carol - The beauty here is a solitary angel flying high above the earth. In the stillness of the night you can here "How sweet is love." The most comforting carol on this CD. It wraps you in warmth and you almost feel protected from all harm. Zola's playing dissolves all stress, this is a piece you could easily fall asleep to. As beautiful as a lullaby with a depth of caring that speaks of love and sweet dreams.
11. Ding Dong Merrily on High - A lighthearted piece. The emphasis here seems to be a joyous celebration.
12. Poverty - Spectacular depth and understanding. Zola shows her sensitivity in this interpretation. I hear a message so subtle it almost begs not to be explained but only to be felt with the heart. Perhaps this piece mostly evokes a sense of awe. We gaze at the tiny gift sleeping in the straw and are amazed at how a small child could be the hope of the world.
13. Silent Night - Instantly recognizable and a combination of all we love at Christmas Time. Zola plays this carol with an intricate beauty befitting this captivating story of heavenly peace.
Truly, I've never heard a collection of piano solos so delicate in magical beauty. Zola Van's music will quickly capture your heart. The universal messages of hope, peace and love have been captured in her interpretations of each carol. I highly recommend "Carol: A Christmas Journey" for the Holiday Season or anytime when you need a musical escape. It is timeless in its appeal and is a much needed escape from the harried pace of the holiday season or everyday life.
You may also enjoy "Paint the Forest Winter," and "River to River Trail: The Hike."

A smooth ride to the holidays with this recording!.......2003-10-14
I have had the pleasure and priviledge of listening and reviewing Zola Van's 2 previuos releases. I am proud to say the the third release is just a entertaining as the other 2. Zola Van's talent seems with out limits in this release.
There are 13 tracks, totaling over 50 minutes of some of the best piano music out there today. The complete collection of Christamas music has you listening to all time favorites like Silent Night, which is my personal faovrite on this album.
You have some lesser known releases such as Carol of the Birds and the Wexford Carol. Even though the music is lsated for the holiday season, and it would make a perfect holiday gift, this cd could and should be listened to almost any timeof the year.
Having been given the rare oppurtunity to hear music that not only calms the situation but also relaxes you at the same is one of life simple pleasures. This recording is gentle in sound but large in volume as the music will resonante for more that just the Winter season.
Zola Van has given the listener a true gift of the holiday spirit - excellent job!

Max Webster get a bit more jazzy and progressive........2005-11-09
While I don't think this album is as strong or as consistent as the first Max Webster album, I still think it is a very good album and that it has it's share of strong material.
I'm not too fond of the first two cuts..." High Class In Borrowed Shoes " is an upbeat rock and roll song with plenty of synthesizers and good jamming guitar, though it has never been one of my favorite M.W. songs. " Diamonds, Diamonds " is probably my least favorite song that Max has ever recorded...it's an odd, mellow piece that has a tropical Island feel to it. I don't like or understand this song at all.
Things start to pick up with the third track, the humorous progressive jazz rocker " Gravity ", which has some funny lines in it that are sung very comically by Kim Mitchell. Impressive lead guitar playing on it as well. " Words to Words " is an underrated power ballad. I don't usually like Max's more mellow songs, but I think this is a wonderful, melodic little piece, with some sweet lyrics and a great, emotional singing performance from Mitchell.
" America's Veins " is another fast, hard rocker with some rather weird, but funny lyrics and more jamming guitar. " Oh War! " is a mid tempo hard rocker (maybe the heaviest song here ) and has that evil " F " word in it. A good song, though oddly enough not one of my favorite tunes on the album. " On The Road " is a soft acoustic piece that has drummer Gary McCracken playing the brushes. A nice song, though I feel like it goes on a wee bit too long...like the road itself, I guess.
"Rain Child " is written and sug by keyboardist Terry Watkinson. I like this song quite a bit....the organ playing reminds me of the band Kansas. It's a bit progressive, it is ,and relaxing and tuneful at the same time. The album ends with the progressive hard rock tune " In Context Of The Moon ", which I think is a tad on the confusing and disjointed side. There are some good parts to this song...I particularly like the heavier parts...though they segue very well into each other. Still, it is not a boring piece.
The front and back cover shows the band dressed up in some slightly feminine and quite colorful clothing. Overall, I think this is a very good Max Webster album...not as good as the first M.W. album, but more consistent than the albums that would follow it.
One of the Max-Machine's very best, bu not the best.......2005-05-12
This album is what launched Max Webster across North America in the mid-seventies. here's my song by song review.
1-High Class in Borrowed Shoes starts the album off with a high-energy, straightforword rocker, 9/10
2-Diamonds,Diamonds is a very odd ballad that I unfortunetely could never quite get into. 5/10
3-Gravity is a heavy song that really gets the listener quite interested. 9/10
4-Words To Words is again another strangly placed ballad that I don't think fits in. 6/10
5- America's Veins is probrably the best song that max ever wrote, heavy, intense and catchy. 11/10
6-Oh War! is definatly the heaviest on the album, heavy and bluesy, definate Led Zeppelin influence. 10/10
7-On The Road is a nice acoustic song that lightens the mood a little bit. 7/10
8-Rain Child is the first song to feature keyboardist Terry Watkinson on vocals and it stands as a pretty stong cut off the album.
9-In Context Of The Moon is one of the best songs that Max has ever wrote because it's breathtaking, it's loud, it's difficult' it's groovy and it's just so friggin' impressive. It serves as one of the greatest finale's in the history of music (alongside Beyond the Moon from the Websters Mutiny Up My Sleeve album and When The Levee Breaks from Led Zeppelin's 4, and possibly Hard Lovin' Man from Deep Purple's In Rock)
All in all it's a good buy for anyone who wants to get into Max Webster or for anyone who enjoys prog/metal music

Max Webster fan? Yeah, this is a Must-Have!.......2003-11-30
Being a huge fan of 1970s Canadian act Max Webster, I'm reluctant to advise fans of post-Webster act Kim Mitchell to get this album. This stuff is a little different then what Mitchell was doing in the 80s and still does. I think it's much better. Very different, very enjoyable Canadian rock from a by-gone time. The title song is a Max Webster 'classic' and a great straight ahead, kick-ass rock tune from the late 70s. I think this is the BEST album released by the Max's, though I'm sure a few would argue the first may be the best. To avoid argument, get both. Canada had few good rock acts in the 70s. We've caught up in the past few years, but back then, there were very few bands worth their lick....Max Webster was one of those bands. Get the first two albums and enjoy. The live album would be a nice addition to complete your Webster collection. This is a great, classic Canadian CD.
