Pop Corn But Not Corny Pop.......2005-02-09
This is a really goofy & fun disc that actually is more musically
realized than the hit "Popcorn" would lead you to believe. There
is some dross mixed up amongst the gems here to be sure. For the
time period this was recorded in (the 1970's)several of the more
xperimental tracks hold their own nicely sounding contemporary
and not at all unlike many synth pop recordings from today.
Overall it is minimalistic pop music with a lot of great hooks
(once you hear "Popcorn" you'll be humming it all day long) and a
pleasant diversion from guitar driven pop/rock that dominates 90%
of 70's music.Hot Butter(actually one man Stan Free)does several
tunes that became standards of many Surf/Instro bands such as
the song "Apache and The Chantays oft recorded "Pipeline". In an
interesting turnabout 90's Surf revivalists "The Phantom Surfers"
do a guitar version of "Popcorn" that rocks like a son of a gun.
Recommended for all Synth/Moog fanatics, instrumental fans and all
of you who gig catchy & endearingly cheesy pop music in general.
Who's Brave Enough To Declare "THIS IS GREAT!" ?.......2004-01-11
No apologies! I bought this this CD solely for the song "Popcorn" after I could not find the tune contained on any palatable "One Hit Wonders" compilation. If I were to go the compilation route, I would have to be ear-to-ear with track-after-track of every nightmare from "Afternoon Delight" to "Run Johnny Run."
So I thought, I'll chance a CD packed with covers of songs on The Moog Synthesizer. It couldn't be any worse than 1970s hits that climbed out of the LP garbage bins and onto CDs to haunt us well into the 21st Century. At the worst, "Hot Butter" could be packed with hysterical campy tunes to play at a party filled with bored or inebriated guests.
Boy, did I underestimate this CD! I loved "Popcorn" every bit as I remember, but I cringe a bit when I say I LOVED Stan Free's Moog Synthesizer renditions of songs too! The Moog Synthesizer gives a 1960s robotic Sci-Fi aura to tunes like "Apache," (instead of a surf atmosphere, the high pitch cry of the techno-keyboard makes you picture The Apache Warrior buzzing in orbit with Alan Shepherd and Mr. Spock) "The Silent Screen," (again, picture computerized music playing while Keaton & Keystones cops wear bubble helmets on their heads as they peruse the stars) and especially "Love At First Sight;" The Moog rendition of Serge Gainsbourg's silly hit song (though I think he intended it to be serious) actually sounds like space-age romance without a hint of camp!
Unfortunately for us, Stan Free's only hit as the one-man-band "Hot Butter" was "Popcorn," and he ceased putting out music shortly thereafter. He was still gainfully employed as a back up musician for everyone from John Denver to Arlo Guthrie to The Boston Pops. He passed away in 1995. If he's up there listening to the earthly sounds of keyboards, be they Moog, Grand Piano, or Harpsechord, I hope he will pause to read these words: Stan Free, you left this world a more enjoyable--- and pleasantly sillier--- place.
I enjoy this CD immensely. Campy at times, outright enjoyable at others. I highly recommend you add "Hot Butter" to your collection.
Look for the vinyl instead..........2002-05-13
Most of these modern Moog collections seem to be going for the "Gosh-golly-gee-I-remember-this" factor. They pick the shortest and cheesiest songs, ignoring some of the (imho) better and more creative stuff. I'm not sure what the reason, but in any case I would recommend you find an inexpensive record player, and think about buying these songs on second-hand vinyl (try Ebay) instead if you like the sound of the Moog. Despite the clicks and pops, you'll get a much better representation of what some of these artists did with analog synthesizers, rather than some record company producer's picks. The 'cheese factor' is just too strong on these CD compilations.
A modern classic.......2002-04-22
I owned "Popcorn" on vinyl when it was first released. This CD nearly caused a flashback. Listening is bound to bring back memories of flowers, polyester, and long sideburns. Back in the good ol'days, when a synthesizer looked like an old-fashioned telephone switchboard, this music was breaking new ground and laying the foundation for today's electonically-generated sound.
Popcorn[Import] Hot Butter.......2002-02-24
I enjoyed this song when I was young. It brings back good memories. If you never heard it, please do.

Customer Reviews:
Messages from a Soul Sister..........2007-01-15
James Brown said in his autobiography that Vicki Anderson was the best singer he ever had in his revue, which should give you a hint as to her ability when you consider that JB's revue also employed the likes of Lyn Collins and Marva Whitney, who were amazing singers. While it is pricey, this collection is more than worth getting for all the funky grooves it contains. Not to mention, this is the ONLY release of Vicki Anderson's material that is currently available. This CD had me from track one, the live "Message From The Soul Sisters", which has an extremely catchy piano riff and a vampin' groove by the JB's. The majority of the material on this disc is from her work with the James Brown band from the mid 1960's to the early 1970's. Several "answer" songs are included, such as "Super Good" (her answer to JB's "Super Bad), her answer to JB's "Mother Popcorn" (subtitled "I Got A Mother For You"), and her answer to Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff" entitled "I'm Too Tough For Mr. Big Stuff". Not only are these songs entertaining with her sassy answers to the originals and her irresistable attitude, but they are also horn driven jams that are funky as hell. I also enjoyed some of the soul ballads that were included, such as "Wide Awake In A Dream", which was later covered by Lyn Collins. It goes without saying that if you are a fan of James Brown this collection will not disappoint. In fact, JB can be heard in the background of many of the tracks and is featured on his two duets with Vicki Anderson on "Think" and "You've Got The Power". (Its interesting to hear the differences between Lyn Collins' version of "Think" and the version on this disc.) Also included is a duet between Vicki Anderson and her husband, JB sideman Bobby Byrd, on the mellow "You're Welcome, Stop On By". I was not aware that Vicki Anderson had recorded past the 1970's, but her 1994 recording of the Gil Scott Heron classic "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" with Bossa Nostra shows that she hadn't lost any of her vocal power or ability in the years since her recordings from the seventies. Overall this disc is solid, and although the price is high for a single disc, to me the grooves were worth the extra bucks. If you are a James Brown fan or are looking for some rare vintage funk, grab this one before it goes out of print. You won't regret it.

Customer Reviews:
A Spike that promises but delivers only now and then!.......2006-11-23
This 2002 Spike Jones indie release of some rather rare tracks in the Jones arsenal is one that promises alot but doesn't really deliver overall.
Harlequin is an indie company in England who makes their living obtaining copies of sometimes rare/hard to find records now in the hands of private collections and releasing them onto records/CDs....a great way to get around copyright laws in many countries.Harlequin,Proper,Flapper,ASV,et al have done very well over the years trying to fill the niche collectors market in material that the biggies won't or aren't interested in releasing. This release while produced in England was made in the Czech Republic....make of that what you will,if anything.
This is great for collectors and compleatists looking for those rare items to add to their favourites collections. But like everything else in this world caveat emptor, buyer beware. Not all indie releases are made equal as some companies take more pains to get their work done as well as they can while others are just out there to exploit a gullable public.
While this release doesn't fall into the latter category by any means it is certainly from a audio point of view rather disappointing. It's a mixed bag with some tracks sounding quite well while others sounding pretty poor.
There are two main factors involved here: 1) the person on the sound board,i.e. the expertise/committment at equalizing and remixing the sound the best he/she possibly can and 2)the source material involved,i.e.how worn/damaged are the pressings they have to work with.
And this is the crux on which buying these releases rest on.You takes your chances and settle for what you gets.
Another bone of contention I have with the release are the liner notes. For the most part they are all over the place. They are written by a member of the Spike Jones International Fan Club who(should have known BETTER) wrote them like he was releasing them to a bunch of buddies instead of a more generalized public. It's filled with alot of inane patter,in-jokes and references. While I "got" many of them this kind of liner note is NOT for general fan consumption and shows a disturbing lack of professionalism and subsequent lack of respect for the buyer.
To top this the liner notes do blurbs on just 13 of the 23 tracks on the disc!! The best thing about the booklet really are the pictures included, not much else.
In conclusion unless you are a Spike Jones compleatist who REALLY wants these performances, about five released studio recordings and the rest split between alternate takes and live recordings, then I suggest you give this a pass. The sound varies considerably on these tracks and are no where near what you would hear on official releases and should have been better than they are.And let's not get into the liner notes again....as annoying as a Popcorn Sack!!
New To Spike? Don't Buy this until you complete "Slickers 101".......2006-07-28
If you are new to Spike and the Slickers, buy one of the "Best of Collections" first! The reason is simple: those CDs contain the polished, finely tuned performances that made us fans. This CD contains material that an old time Spike fan like me appreciates as "the other stuff Spike did".
And now for some REAL info?.......2003-05-15
Incredible performances: just listen to the live performance of "Dance of the hours", or Tommy Dorsey trying to fit in Spike's rendering of his own sig tune "I'm getting sentimental over you" (also live)... a bunch of other gems too. BUT: again, like with the other Harlequin records, you have to know already a lot about Spike & Slickers, because their liner notes keep referring to "insiders only facts". I like the style of the notes, but the contents are lost on me... Since I actually would have liked to rate this CD SIX stars, leaving of one for the liner notes still gives me five stars. Hahaha!
Long lost Spike Jones tracks surface!.......2003-01-25
Harlequin has been releasing hard-to-find Spike Jones items since the 1980s, beginning with the Standard Transcriptions. But this new release, Fonk, is absolutely the best of the litter! Even if you are a rabid Jones collector, you will find a goldmine of long out-of-print discs, previously unheard radio excerpts, interviews, and even several alternate performances from Spike's golden days with RCA Victor. The sound is quite good on all tracks. There is not a "lemon" among them!
