Volume #4 was my first introduction to the Cafe Del Mar series. While I've gradually acquired other titles in this line I have to say that Its the one that best soothes my frayed and tired nerves at the end of the day. Some tunes will literally have you crying out, "Take me away"!.... Ahhhhh... A nice cafe by the beach with some cold ones to sip while feeling the breeze and enjoying a glorious sunset. That in a nutshell keeps me coming back to this release.

I normally wouldn't submit a review just to say "I totally agree with everything that he just said". Except in this case. I really enjoy the Cafe Del Mar collection even though many complain that the series is overproduced, too commercial, and generally not the best chill. This is not the time to seek to debunk those reviews. I just finished my collection of volumes 1-9 and wholeheartedly agree that this is the best of all. Volumes 1-2 have some good tracks, but the track flow lacks continuity in tempo and vibe. Volume 3 is closer but it is only in Volume 4 that Jose Padilla gets the full-on chill groove perfectly. Later cds are hit or miss (Volume 9 is back on track!). My two cents.

Cafe Del Mar 4 (Volumen Cuatro) is by far my favorite. I have all the volumes to date, from 1 to 11, but was missing Volume 4, which I just picked up. I LOVE this CD!! Don't get me wrong, all the other Cafe Del Mar volumes are fair to good, with maybe 1 or 2 or 3 very good tracks on each of them. Despite these gems, most of the newer volumes (especially from Vol. 9 onward) tend to sound monotous--you know, the same beat, the same rhythm, the same "sound". But in Volume 4, every song has something new, different, and exciting to offer--and I just can't say that that is true with the other volumes. Volume 4 is the best ecclectic fusion of electronica, jazz, midtempo, and lounge of the bunch. Very cosmo!

'Cafe Del Mar 4' is one of the most melodic additions to the wonderful series which has come to dominate and perhaps even define the downtempo movement in modern popular music culture. This particular compilation combines a varied range of jazz-symphonic excellence with some edgier rhythms, most suitably espoused by Wasis Diop's No Sant featuring vocals by Lena Fiagbe. The breathtaking and jazzy culmination of this album is Stan Getz's Street Tattoo. The deft blending of natural sounds, such as crickets in the wild and a child's voice in Grillos by Paco Fernandes is simply inspired. Opening the album is the sensuous track Que Bonito by Jose Padilla, a electronic fusion of cymbalon, Spanish guitar, xylophone and bells in an altogether more uptempo arrangement. The energy of this track ordinarily would rule it out of the donwtempo genre, but juxtaposed with Talvin Singh's remix of John Martyn's Sunshines Better, it is a welcome compliment and in fact emphasizes the eclectic nature of this superlative member of the Café Del Mar family.

Well, this volume of Cafe Del Mar is pretty bad, the only good songs are:

If you can only afford one CD, I will recommend "Cafe Del Mar Volume 9 or Volume 8", but not this one.

+1/2 Stars. This CD sounds amazing after all these years. Its obvious that when it was first recorded it was done in such a way that the remastering sounds like a CD recorded today--the bass is rich and full. The booklet inside this lovingly presented digipak mentions that the songs were born out of the dissolution of Elizabeth Frasers relationship with Robin Guthrie. Knowing that gives the music a framework that only enriches the whole. Sure there is Heaven or Las Vegas, Treasure, and Blue Bell Knoll, but this latter CT album (along with Milk and Kisses) makes the case for being two of their most enjoyable and listenable releases. Note:Originally the CD was emerald blue, the reissue contains a white CD.

Been listening to this album for years, so much so, I've worn out 3 discs (scratches, heat, etc). It's timeless music to me, good for mellowing, good for falling asleep to, relaxing, reflecting...

Price is a bit steep. Since it's "out of print" and now re-released as "digitally re-mastered", well, I guess the effort makes it command a higher price point, but the reality is, I can't hear any difference between this edition and the original release...

Nevertheless, I'd have paid 50 bucks to replace my last copy. This copy I've imported to I-tunes, so I've burned a CD of it as my daily player, and put my "digitally re-mastered"purchase in my safe deposit box! HAHA!

Ok, i'am so sick and tired of everyone saying that "treasure" is the best cocteau album. Every single cocteau album is appropriate for its time, and four calender is no exception! Each song is a floating masterpiece of pop. Robin guthries guitar work is as mesmerizing as ever, as is elizabeth frasers haunting voice. They are definatly going for a "lighter' sound. Which makes it no less as perfect as their previous work. I do recommend buying all of the new re-mastered albums. They are so clear and beautiful.

This CD is distinctly more oriental in flavor then Buddha Bar CDs. Although I prefer original Buddha Bar collection this one is solid contender to that series. Music is mellow and relaxing, but it is not contiguously/seamlessly mixed as on Buddha Bar series.

I came across this while brousing in a record store and bought it on a whim. After enjoying "Buddha Bar III" and "Kharma Beats," I figured this was worth a shot. I was not disappointed. While it doesn't quite measure up to the seamless mixes of the Buddha Bar series, this cd is basically from the same school. It's a mix of upbeat and more relaxing tracks that makes for a good listen, and it's cheaper than a Buddha Bar 2-cd set.

I was quite impressed with the "reggae" version of "Am I the Same Girl?", as well as the blending of Lonnie Liston Smith's "Expansions" into their set. I am giving this four stars due to its outrageous price. All in all, behind the music is some superior musicianship.

For a time, I passed on paying the asking price for this CD. However, I lucked up and got it at a substantial discount via an Amazon seller. This is truly a nice live, tight set. Better than they ever were in the studio. Music arrangements just like I like. Smooth and fresh!

I am a relatively recent convert to Swing Out Sister. To me, the real test of a group is the ability to sing and perform live since it isn't in a studio to have all the equipment "pretty up" the sound and vocals. I was VERY impressed with Corinne's vocals and Andrew's keyboard skills as well the background singers and musicians. SOS is a "Breakout" group and it's a shame they are not as popular here in the US as they are overseas. On the news section of their website, it says they are planning a tour this spring, unfortunately, all the venues are overseas, including the Jazz Cafe (April 3,4, & 5th, 2005 per the Jazz Cafe website), where this album was recorded 12 years ago. Hopefully, they'll throw some US dates in there.

Wow! what a great CD. All the great tracks from their early years are here and the sound quality is top notch. They have such a cool style with the jazz beats mixed in with Corrine's incredible voice. I would love to see them live someday as this group is so over looked in the states. Easy listening even if you have never heard of Swing Out Sis.

Doesn't matter wheather you're an SOS fan or not: if you have to save few albums and take them with you in the "desert island", this is one.
It's a groovy mixture of jazz, funky and pop. All songs are deeply rearranged compared to the studio version and it's a surprise (expecially if you already know the original versions) to listen to the new arrangement of "Twilight World" or "Am I the Same Girl" (to name a couple); the sound is rich, with each instrument playing at its best: guitar, bass, drums and percussions, keyboards, great arrangements of the brass section and, of course, the beautiful Corinne's voice.
There's a lot of fantasy and good taste in the whole thing.
My favourite song at the moment is "Who let the love out".

I first fell in love with Blossom Dearie when I was a kid and I heard her sing the "Figure 8" and "Adjectives" songs on the School House Rocks cartoons. As an adult I rediscovered her by accident on a Cole Porter compilation cd singing "Give Him the Ooh La La." I recently purchased and listened to this cd and love it. The song "Dusty Springfield" was worth the purchase price alone. The album has a variety of songs from various LPs recorded by Blossom in the 50s and 60s- the variety is as delightful as Dearie's dear sweet voice. There are the classic piano versions of her songs and a couple of great Bossa Nova arrangements. I am an unabashed fan of Blossom Dearie and recommend this cd for any fan-old or new of this enchanting singer. I once read where her voice was compared to a Lalique crystal dove. This collection gives that dove flight.
