John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas' beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can't Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It's remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you've heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V).......2007-06-21
product: Star Wars: A Musical Journey (2005) (V), included as bonus disc in Episode III soundtrack.
The bonus dvd with this soundtrack was the reason I purchased. I enjoy film soundtracks, and science fiction, but this dvd was a real highlight for me. I got the soundtrack cd out of the local library. The cd was missing from the case, but I found this wonderful dvd instead that I went out to purchase later.
With optional segments of dialog from Ian McDiarmid, this film is a stunning visual and musical overview of the full epic story of episodes I-VI of Star Wars. For those of us who felt that eps. IV-VI fell short of our expectations, this film presents them well as parts of the whole story. The Musical Journey also stands as a summary of the entire SW opus for someone who is not familiar with the Star Wars characters and plot. Highly recommended.
Options: no subtitles or other options.
Not one of his bests, but very close.......2007-05-21
The Episode III soundtrack is very good. Not great, but very, very good. You can tell that Williams is getting old, but he still manages to weave together a very memorable score.
My favorite tracks are "Battle of the Heroes," "Anakin's Betrayal," Palpatine's teachings, "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan," and the "Immolation Scene."
The others are very good as well, but these are especially nice. "Battle of the Heroes" is Dual of the Fates for Revenge of the Sith. "Anakin's Betrayal" is a very sad track that is, in my opinion, one of William's most powerful pieces. "Palpatine's Teachings" is really, really neat. It's very dark and moody, a perfect piece for the evil emperor. The only weird thing is the end. "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" is the action piece that plays during the battles of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and Yoda and the Emperor. Finally, "The Immolation Scene" is another sad piece, even more so than "Anakin's Betrayal."
Although I really like this CD, there are some things that are missing (as usual). First, the whole sequence where the droids are looking for Obi-Wan after he was shot. You see Obi-Wan in his ship with Senator Organa on the Hologram (or whatever it is), and Obi-Wan says that his clones turned on him. That was some pretty awesome music that OF COURSE was left out of the CD. Then there was Dual of the Fates in the movie, but completely absent from the CD. And probably the most annoying was that whole piece of music before Obi-Wan and Anakin fight. It was so touching and sad and I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT IT OUT! Absolutely amazing. Also, did anyone notice that some little bits were cut out? For example, in Anakin vs. Obi Wan, they cut out about a second or two of choir. What?! What the heck is with that? It's when Anakin is running on the long thing and jumps on the droid on the lava. Also, there was some pretty cool drumming when you see Yoda and the Emperor fighting, and you can see the whole stadium (the big room). There's also drumming in "Enter Lord Vader" that is muted in the soundtrack.
Oh well...if I'm going to collect movie scores, I'm going to have to get used to the fact that in almost all cases there's not going to be every bit of music. I've experienced this in both Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park I (there was very little left out on this score), and almost everything else. At the moment, I'm just waiting for the 22nd, for the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack. It's gonna be amazing.

John Williams' finest work.......2007-04-20
There is little more I can say that hasn't already been said about the soundtrack to Episode 3, especially what Amazon contributor Dan Mohr wrote in his review of the soundtrack on 2/2/2006. His review captured almost all the thoughts, feelings, and emotions I had when I first listened to the soundtrack, and was, IMO, the best review of John Williams' greatest masterpiece.
Having said that, I will say that few soundtracks have ever so perfectly captured the underlying emotional currents of their respective movie; in the case of ROTS, the contemporaneous tragedies of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side, the extermination of the Jedi, and the rise of the oppressive Empire. The listener is confronted with the depth and totality of the evil that has beset the entire galaxy to a degree that the film could not reach in only 2 hours.
Bravo, Dan Mohr, and BRAVO John Williams!
A Great Conclusion to the Prequel Trilogy.......2007-04-07
This is a great work of art. I rank it 4th among Star Wars soundtracks after A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace. I had a hard deciding which I thought was better, The Phantom Meance or Revenge of the Sith, but I decided that The Phantom Menace lays the foundation for so much that is in this soundtrack and is thus the more masterful work. But that doesn't mean that this score still isn't great. Every piece is a thrill to listen to and pace never lets up. "Battle of the Hereos" is an amazing piece and the rendition of the "Funeral Theme" from Episoded I captures the film's tragety magnificently. Also I do not think John Williams could have portrayed the Jedi's extinction more perfectly than he did in "Anakin's Betrayal". This is without a doubt the best score of 2005 and one of the best of the decade.
Williams is slumming it.......2007-04-01
Williams's score for Revenge of the Sith is almost entirely overbearing, lacking any emotional subtlety. The music is overcomplicated and even a bit confusing, especially in the tracks that correspond to action sequences in the movie. His overuse of choral tracks and vocals is too bombastic and irritating to be listened to without the explosions and laser blasts of the soundtrack to soften them. (Yes, this music is actually softened by the sounds of warfare.) Worst of all, much of the music has simply been lifted from earlier scores. At times his self-imitation was so blatant that I actually wondered whether the editor who had complied this score had made a mistake and I was listening to The Empire Strikes Back or A New Hope. Also suffers from not including the entire score, in some cases cutting out musical segues in obvious and awkward ways.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.
Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20
After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.
Excellent!.......2006-08-10
Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.
Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14
I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

An inventive compilation of 13 tunes, Passion Planet has matters of the heart as its theme. Artists as diverse as Milton Nascimento, Ayub Ogada, Ravi Shankar, and Loreena McKennitt share space with less well known talent like Claudia Gomez, Paban Das Baul, and Salamatkan Sadihova for a truly international mix of love songs from around the world. The stylistic range is wide indeed, from ballads to more uptempo numbers suitable for romantic sashaying, offering an eclectic smorgasbord of expression from around the world on one of the basic human emotions. The CD also has a nice balance of traditional and contemporary in both material and production that should provide something to like for almost any listener. --Derek Rath

A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28
Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!
an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31
Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

Only for Dark Zone Lovers!.......2002-02-15
I highly recommend this album only if your a fan of "Lexx," otherwise it might be to new-age goth for the music maven at heart. The album features a lot of background music heard from the first season of the sci-fi show like the intro song and a the Brunnen-G fight song. (You know that song that Kai is always singing). There are also some actual dialogue clips from the show that come before the appropriate songs. I admit some parts of the album are a bit cheese, but some of the cuts of this album would be great for radio station spots. I'm currently a college Dj with a 80's dark wave show and the music from this album is great for background beds and intros. So once again this album is probably only for the cheese at heart or people interested in having a great dark zone show!
My favorite quote from the album is on track number #9.
790: "I'm equipped with love."
Stanley Tweedle: "I'm equipped with a love muscle."
(I think the song either appears in Luvliner or Super Nova when Stanley Tweedle is almost molested by Tim Curry (A.k.a poet man)
Tales/Lexx CD Other Worldly.......2001-05-24
The CD from Tales From A Parallel Universe or to it's fans better known as The Lexx Movies, is able to transend it's other worldly music to even the hardest sceptic of Lexx. The rythum and melodies of the songs bring pictures to one's mind of it's imaginative subject matter. And no one can resist the upbeat Fight Song of the Brunnen-G. Skeptics open your mind and take a ride on the Lexx to a new universe of music. Enjoy!
great scifi soundtrack of an underrated show.......2001-01-27
Lexx is either adored or hated. This soundtrack is universally adored. I have known people who have never seen Lexx break into Ya-a-o fight song. My best friend who cannot stand Lexx chooses this CD as his prefered gaming music. Sample junkies take note taht many good sounds and vocal clips are on this as well. So even if you are not a fan of the show but really like well composed and intresteing soundtracks, you must get this NOW!
Marty Simon's work on Lexx is Fantastic!.......2000-12-02
This CD was part two of my two step doorway into loving Lexx (perhaps see my Lexx review). Part one was Sci-Fi Channel's playing of the Four Lexx Movies (Sci-Fi's terrible marketing of Lexx almost stopped me from giving it the chance it deserves). The music on this CD, created by Marty Simon, is the fantastic score from those movies. Everyone's favorite "Yo-A-O (Fight Song Of The Brunnen-G)" is probably the Lexx-addict centerpiece of the CD; it is a brilliant vocal piece that has all the sense of the artist/poet warrior pride that the Brunnen-G culture was famed for, plus a tense and dramatic optimism for victory all wrapped into a less-than 60 second piece. This is brilliant composition and execution. The other tracks of note are the grand sounding theme ("Welcome To The Dark Zone"), "Gigashadow March," "Fantasy Dance" (which lives up to its name in a cute and positive but not at all Disney way), the dance-like thematic "Moth Ride" and even "Milk Fed Boys," which you have to see "Tales From a Parallel Universe 2.0" (second movie) to fully appreciate. If you like Lexx (even if only for just the four movies), pick up this CD; you will certainly appreciate it. It's one of my personal favorites. I hope to see more of Marty Simon's Lexx soundtrack released in the future. I am off to find out what else he created...
Fantasy/Futuristic Ambience for Non-Fans.......2000-07-20
I originally bought this soundtrack because I had seen a few epidodes of Lexx and thought I was going to become a fan. Although I don't watch the show much anymore, this CD still gets good play time in my house. That's because it's great, without even the factor of being tied to the movies and series. This CD was the first time I bought a score type soundtrack instead of ones filled with songs played in a movie (and overplayed on radio). The tracks are all enjoyable. The ones that really stand out are Battle Of The Universe (a laid back futuristic battle march), Love Muscle (a techno-ish dance nightmare, but I love it), and Zev's Shower (a beautiful, feminine journey). I even racked my brain and couldn't find a single thing to complain about; this whole CD is great!

a little known gem.......2006-06-19
i first heard kourosh zolani while i was in college in bloomington indiana. a local station played a piece called 'butterflies'. i was imediately captivated by the sadness and joy captured at once in this piece. a strange combination, and a unique, beautiful composition. i spent years searching stores in seattle for it, to no avail. finaly i broke down and ordered it online. i don't mind the endearingly silly cd cover. is that why the picture isn't on amazon? clearly a low budget cd production, and not fair to the beautiful music this cd contains. tracks like 'good bye home land' and, 'snow queen' in particular, are downright haunting and mesmerizing. the tracks 'ghasedak-ha (dandelions)' and 'diadar (at the first glance) are striking and contain virtuso performances by the iranian born santour player. it's so hard to describe this music. if you're wondering, a santour is like a dulcimer. it's a solo instrumental cd. just him playing his santour. some tracks are jubilent, many are meloncholy. while the cd as a whole remains sparse, which is just what has haunted and grown on me, all tracks contain joy of life and music. do yourself a favor and at least check some tracks out at his website. kouroshzolani.com . if you at all love music. please. i doubt you'll regret it.

The best thing since stratospheare if not better.......2006-02-23
Having read the one 2 star review...out of the other 4 or 5 star reviews, I think that guy has missed the point so completely it's really quite shocking.... Even though some orchestral sounds are obviously not as realistic as real instruments can be, the songs themselves are SO much better musically, for the most part, than the great Dukes, and have another take completely...for instance, the Byrds style song is far superior in recording, colour, style and song than the similar attempt by the XTC guys as the Dukes...it's not even close. Here Andrew actually sounds like the Byrds, who even Roger nee Jim Mcguinn pronounced as "perfect", unlike the Dukes attempt at the "Younger Than yesterday" style Byrds, which was somewhat boring. The Dylan Meets Beatles Abbey Road period song, "Mr Plastic Business Man", or "Tomorrow Drop Dead" (an homage to "Tomorrow Never Knows") is far superior to anything than maybe a few Dukes songs (I am keen on 25 'o clock, of course) that it just seems strange this guy even compares the two. Yes, the sounds aren't as believable as the Dukes,in some way, especially orchestraly,in places, (but not guitar wise, certainly! Those are magnificent recreations...listen to "chasing My Tail" or "Somewhere In Time And Space") but the more important aspect - the MUSICAL content and STYLE impressions of the Beatles, Dylan, The Byrds, The Doors (with remarkable Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Jim Mcguinn et all vocal impressions) is much more enjoyable and musically sound than any of the similar projects out there, notably the Dukes Of Stratosphere, who Mr. Gold admitted, in interviews, gave him the idea to attempt this) and musicality is where the real fun in this is. It stands on it's own...unlike the Dukes, who mainly just imitate (to good affect, no fear) the sounds of, not really the writing. The ALL songs while sometimes funny but not just comedy like the Rutles, who do a far less realistic, and stylistically much earlier years take on the Beatles, are funny in places, and use old phrases of course, like talking about beads, flower power, sitars, drugs and so on, are more like real songs these groups may have actually written, not just sound alikes from a purely instrumental point of view. Even in that, some songs are wonderfully exact, in the playing especially. Your swear that's Paul playing bass on "Rainbow People" or "Plastic Business Man", or Ringo on same. Even the mixing style (very stereo, drums one side, vocals, guitars..all right and left often) is the same. Or the incredible Byrds impression on "Space and Time", down to the usual right side 12 string, left side Crosby parts or the subtle and exactly copied stylings and choices of the Doors style song, replete with similar echo, mixing style, drum fills, guitar sound, and again the amazing Morrison impression, down to the way robby krieger or jogn densmore played, fills and all.and So, over all, the feeling and enjoyability of the musical invention and sometimes funny lyrics (lines like "your hair is getting good at the back" from Plastic Business man, and "so anyway, since death's so f***in scary, in your will make me benificiary, when you drop dead, I'll be well fed' from Tomorrow drop dead; or just trippy ("it has no eyes but sight"; "wink of the third eye" etc) or just a list of 60's memorabilia, The rainbow people are here to freak you out...bells and beads on...flower power etc etc"), the main power here is not the sounds (which are great, but yes, not neccasarily authentic to the core) but the music itself, which is just amazingly beautiful, interesting, inventive, and plain old just good! Yes the dukes SOUNDED a bit more authentic, but the music suffered a bit...Here the opposite is true. Except the sound doesn't REALLY suffer, it's just not trying to be letter perfect....and in some case it IS perfect: listen to "chasing my tail" which sounds like Here There and Everywhere, instrument wise, or the aformentioned "Mr Plastic Business Man", which sounds like a combination of She's So Heavy, Mr Jones, and something from the White album or Abbey road...listen to the Lennon piano (the tag...complete with "I swear that's Ringo playing" drums, and hofner/ rickenbacker "I swear thats Paul" bass; or the beautiful "twirl" Eleanor Rigby type piece (instrumental only), which is a perfect example of why I think this other fellow is dead wrong- Yes, the strings are fake, and even though they aren't bad, would've sounded better with a real quartet...but the crucial part, the composition, musically is up there with some extremely famous classical composers, compositionally speaking. Perhaps that aspect is not the other reviewers forte, hence the odd fixation on string sounds instead of songwriting. Make no mistake: This CD is just fantastic, and, if you are interested in only how realistic the strings sound,Liusten to the guitars, the drums and bass, the vocals the Electric guitars and bass etc, are dead on, and nobody could anyone argue that. Mr Gold is one of those treasures that sadly somehow has always been a very unsung musical genius, as anyone who has heard his last 5 albums. I never really liked his music that much during the corny Thank You For Being A Friend period, though the production on that song was quite impressive...tho I did love Lonely Boy and Never Let Her Slip Away, (he had many more hits in the UK and worldwide, with himself or with WAX, than the two in his own country)...he's even been called a one hit wonder, which is just plain factually wrong. One other complaint- this other reviewer mentions Graham Gouldman, who wasn't really involved in this album, other than a co-write maybe 2 or 3 songs out of 16 or so...So, it's hard to understand why he is mentioned so prominently in that review. Most of the songs are completely by Mr. Gold, who's ears, I am happy to say, seem to be very much in place, thank you very much. I give this album a 5 out of 5 and wish i could go to 11, as it were. I keep hearing more and more things in it, and get more enamored of the ALL album everyday. BUY this album. It's crucial listening. And don't be fooled by the fame of Andrew Gold's early hits. His later stuff is much better, both musically and lyrically (have you heard CRAWL INTO THE LIGHT on both Bryndle's House Of Silence and a slightly superior remixed version on Gold's recent Intermission CD. Or the amazingly strong Spence Manor Suite CD which is SO strong, even if you don't like country style music, or his album, which does have a lot of graham Gouldman in it, SINCE 1951, which is my personal favourite of all his albums. Listen to Ready To Go Home if you want serious depth, or Teardrops, or That Belongs to You. It's superior than most things floating around the top ten these days (My Humps, anyone?) He is one of you yanks's best CURRENT exports (except maybe Imogen Heap, who I currently am besotted with musically) How this man is not recognized as one of America's foremost singer/songwriters is as inexplicable it is inexusable, and almost a tragedy, much like the late Kevin Gilbert, who inexplixably never got his due, and also died young. Do explore Mr Gold's CD's. Even his childrens CD, Halloween Howls, is marvelous.
Tom from the UK.
Psonic Psychedelia.......2006-02-23
Some people take drugs, others break out every effect box they have and plug in. This is a completely fun album by a guy who's been doing right by his public for decades. If this album doesn't send you, you've got no place to go.
Headphones are highly recommended - it was obviously recorded as a sonic trip in the genre of late Beatles, Moody Blues, Byrds and others. So light the incense, warm up the lava lamps, turn out the lights, light[en] up and enjoy the experience!
Can We Say "Homage"? And not in the bad way.............2005-12-24
What you have here is a gold record winning recording artist, songwriter, producer and several of his friends in studio performing what Andrew Gold calls on the liner notes "a resonably good time" and "indulgent twaddle". This isnt for people that loved "Thank You For Being A Friend". This is for people that loved that song, and his work with Wax, and his current podcast. This is for people that enjoy hearing the OBVIOUSNESS of his influences, and how they work together with the music he's written and the approach he's taken. It's not a masterpiece, it wasnt meant to be, but it is FUN!!! Relax and enjoy.
Use your ears Mr. Gold !!!!.......1999-07-19
Andrew Gold did some fine work in the past, but this c.d. is not what it could have been. The songs are produced in a 90's way with too much 90's instruments (fake strings). The songs are not very well written. You feel what they wanted to do, but it's not finished yet. The song "King of showbiz" is a "Wax" leftover. Mr Gouldman should be capable to write a great 60's song (He did so in the 60's). My advise if you like 60's sound-alikes that know what they are doing, buy the Rutles or the Dukes of the stratosphear.
An encapsulation of the Psychedelic 60's to the max!.......1999-04-11
The Fraternal Order of the All is really Andrew Gold ("Thank you for being a Friend" and many others) with a little help from his friends like Grahm Gould from 10cc doing note-perfect stylistic sendups (or homages if you will) of the various bands of the late 60's like the Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, The Zombies and many others. He does a FANTASTIC job of re-creating the styles and atmospheres of these great bands both vocally and instrumentally. This is the hippest trip this side of Strawberry Fields.
The Fraternal Order of the All does for the psychedelic music of the 60's what the Rutles did for the Beatles and what Spinal Tap did for Heavy Metal music. If you love the music styles of your wonder years run - don't walk to your nearest purveyor of musical CD's (like right here for instance) and buy this album!
