These African-American Rastafarians didn't just originate DC hardcore in the late 1970s with their incredibly fast and brilliant "Pay to Cum" single; they set the bar impossibly high. That the group is not hugely millionaires-with-jets popular is one of the music industry's travesties. But they've always had as much a penchant for pissing off the shaven headed moshers at their shows (playing lengthy dub songs) as for giving them what they want (supersonic riffage). Much of the album employs the metal-tinged sound the group's been flirting with since they were on SST in the late '80s. A third of the tracks are reggae numbers, and while you're not going to sell off all your Culture LPs after hearing those, they are definitely serviceable. Build a Nation is not as great as the ROIR cassette, but it's the best album they've made in years, and shows the band in awesome form. This is thanks in no small part to the production efforts of the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch. As this is their second best-sounding proper album--the first being 1983's Ric Ocasek-produced Rock for Light--it's clear that the band should work only with their celebrity musician-fans at the helm from now on. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Give Thanks and Praises.......2007-07-12

I can't believe this album. Bad Brains haven't missed a beat, they are the best band ever and this album proves it. Buy this album and listen to it religiously, you will thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars I and I Praise the Brains.......2007-07-06

Bad Brains have always been rather tough to figure out, even as their influence extends across several realms of rock. Their interests in hardcore, reggae, and metal don't always gel into a cohesive overall sound, but on this long-awaited new album they are relentlessly pursuing all of their interests with a nearly flawless new focus. Somehow, Bad Brains make songs of different and seemingly incompatible styles work on the same album. Nobody else could sound even remotely believable jumping from hardcore punk to dub reggae to anthemic metal in successive songs. The band's always complicated lynchpin H.R. sounds rejuvenated and his lyrics and vocals have found a strong (but still as nearly-unhinged as ever) focus around Rastafari. Earl and Darryl jump from style to style flawlessly, and Dr. Know continues his savage mutations of every guitar style known to man. The band's diverse interests are probably combined most evenly in the opener "Give Thanks and Praise." "Jah People Make the World Go Round" is a high-flying slab of metal, and especially punishing hardcore workouts are found in "Expand Your Soul" and "Let There be Angels (Just Like You)." Meanwhile, Bad Brains lay down dub-inflected reggae like the best of the Jamaican masters in "Natty Dreadlocks 'pon the Mountain Top," "Jah Love," and the surprisingly sinuous "Until Kingdom Comes." And finally, the Bad Brains attack climaxes in the sinister and insistent "Universal Peace," the apocalyptic music of which belies the title perfectly. [~doomsdayer520~]

3 out of 5 stars I never thought I would say this, but H.R.'s vocals are not up to par. .......2007-07-04

I am as big of fan of the Bad Brains as you're going to find, going back to the early 80's. In fact, to this day, the best show I have ever seen was the Bad Brains in 1984 in San Francisco. So, when this release came out, I was totally pumped and picked it up the on the release day. Unfortunately, this CD just hasn't clicked for me. As others have said, it's almost as if the band is trying to make one record and HR is trying to do something else. Lyrically, it's what we would expect: Religious undertones and positive messages. On the punk songs, the music is fast, although somewhat sloppy. The production by Adam Yauch is decent, although fairly straightforward and simple. The vocals, however, are 2 or 3 tempos below the music and there are heavy effects on the vocals, including delays up the wazoo, which just get silly. In one way I respect what the band is trying to do, but they just don't seem to mesh with one another.

4 out of 5 stars Destroy Babylon.......2007-07-03

The band is on fire for the hardcore tracks, which definitely recall the ROIR sessions. HR, however, opts out of the rapid-fire delivery of yore and is content to repeat mantras or hang back and let the delay do its thing. It's evident that he's more into the reggae, which to my ears is the best the band has ever issued. Adam Yauch's production lends itself well to the reggae tracks-- filling them out with clavinet, brass, B-3, and other choice funky reggae and dubby spice. The reggae tracks sound so good that I'd almost rather hear the band do a whole album of them next time out (if there is a next time out). While HR sounds good on the smokin' rock tracks, it's obvious that he'd rather slowly and soulfully praise Jah than sing "Pay to Cum."

5 out of 5 stars Jah likes it and so do I.......2007-06-29

This is a fanatastic album from a band who never truly got thier due. They have influenced countless musicians(See 90% of Punk bands) and they have undeniable chemistry. Like Jenifer said "When Earl clicks those sticks, the synergy comes alive!!! So many bands search for a sound that is thiers alone and only a few achieve that goal. Bad Brains should be at the top of the list of those that succeeded. Thier music is thier recipe not trace paper (See 91% of bands out now). When I was listening to "Build a nation" I was amazed. If you play thier debut and than play this record, its like no space of time has passed. It feels vibrant, alive, energetic, and the grooves ebb and flow and throb. Sometimes the music kicks in high gear other times it just chills in waves, crashing and rolling against your lucky ears.

I have the utmost respect for the Bad Brains and I am truly grateful for this latest offering from a group of guys who are without equals. Jah loves them indeed!!!

Amazon.com essential recording

It Takes a Nation of Millions was the sign that hip-hop had exploded like a grenade. A rap record as abrasive, hardcore, and eloquent as a JFK speech, the 1988 disc is one classic track after another: tense, multilayered, harmonically wild music. Chuck D. declaims like a master preacher with foil Flavor Flav's voice darting around his. They've got the desperate energy of people fighting for their lives, and everything from their pumped-up rhetoric ("Prophets of Rage") to the group's quasi-paramilitary organization to the sirens and sax squeals in nearly every track declares how urgent their mission is. It's a hugely influential album, and it still sounds fresh and frightening after all these years. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Who are the idiots??.......2007-04-14

I'm compelled to provide a review. For one reason. Why the f isn't this a five star album? Some reviewers out their need their keyboards revoked. I've been listening to this record on and off for almost 20 years. Each time I get the same old buzz. My old (much loved) Pixies albums don't come close in terms of providing everlasting pleasure.

For those that don't own this, just "do yourself a favour."

BTW - DJ Spooky Trojan Records excursion is a blast....(on the platter as I write)

5 out of 5 stars As eerie as a siren........2007-02-18

You know, I once saw someone say that this shouldn't be considered music, and in one way, that person is right: it's an aural explosion on record, in a way not even an industrial band could execute it. This record came out at a time I was still coloring walls, but even I could connect well with it, it is that good. The record hasn't aged a bit. The first I heard from P.E. was "Fear of a Black Planet" a few years back, and I really enjoyed that one. I got to this and was shocked at how it was EVEN better.

Chuck D. and Flavor Flav have a delivery that can't be missed, and the Bomb Squad use some awesome loops and samples. The 3 or 4 interludes on here are great too, and not even those come off as filler. The lyrics are intellectual social/political message. There's not much quite like this today, in fact that might even be an understatement. Some tracks come off like siren tracks, like listening to songs like "Night of the Living Baseheads" and such. The live samples add to the energy of this record. It is a hip-hop record, but you don't have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy this. The energy could be appreciated by a rock fan, and the instrumental of a track like "Black Steel..." could be appreciated by a jazz fan maybe. It doesn't need to be limited to genres. It's a great record, period. The influence is something that's even been going on through the times, and that doesn't need to be explained or even justified.

It's cheaply priced and an amazing album, even sounding fresh nearly 20 years. It doesn't even need remastering any time soon! That's all the more impressive. There is so little not to like about this record, it is recommended to everyone from me.

5 out of 5 stars PUBLIC ENEMY.......2006-11-13

WELL, BEING FROM "THE OLD SCHOOL"...YOU KNOW, "THE POSSITIVE ERA", ITS HARD TO FIND TODAY'S HIP-HOP SATISFYING TO MY SOUL.......SO I GO BACK, AND THERE I FIND WHAT I NEED.
PEACE

5 out of 5 stars Wall of Sound.......2006-11-10

Possibly the greatest rap album of all time. The hard rhymer Chuck D. paired with the multi-layered production of Hank Shocklee(Bomb Squad) still packs as potent a punch as when it first dropped. Not to sleep on Flava, the greatest hype man in the business is essential to the final product; I can't imagine this album being as perfect as it is without him.

5 out of 5 stars Mind Blowing from beginning to end...................2006-09-22

Chuck, Flav, Griff, Terminator X, The Bomb Squad and the S1W's was and still is one of the most powerful hip hop groups ever put together. Chuck's voice alone should be added as seperate member. Check the power of "Here it is BAM!" Absolute classic joints are Don't beleive the Hype, Black Steel, Night of the Living Baseheads, Terminator -Rock-n-Roll, She watch Channel Zero and rest of the album.

5 out of 5 stars Hey babe if this was Nuremberg..........2004-03-24

One of the truly unique bands to emerge from the early-90s Dischord scene with their statement album. NOU can be writen off for any number of things: their penchant for sophmoric noise, comic-politico stance, overstated haircuts and suits, smarmy didacticism. Yet somehow, they overcame all of that and produced a album thats incendiary, informed and confrontational all at once. A true beam of inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars How I Became the President of Vice..........2003-08-17

Quite simpy this is the greatest record of all-time. All bands bow beneath the power of Ulysses. They are the anti-aesthetic of the new music. If only mainstream music had taken a cue from NOU, perhaps we would not be stuck with the talentless menageries flooding the airwaves with their mundane thumps.

this has to be one of the greatest live albums ever .nation of ulysses has takin it live for there 13 point program to destroy america.( these guys say alot and im not going to write it all out).so when i first heard about these guys with there suits and clean cut image from D.C.I thought it was going to be some kind of joke band .i listened to this album passed out went into a coma and awoke fresh and feeling good. .so back in 1992 when the dischord lable was kind of going down the tubes (only fugazi was doing anything good)with all the knew bands coming out on the major lables this album brought them back.so what i am saying if you are down and out with any kind of new stuff coming out today this will bring you back to .why because if you hear this live album of intelligence/courage/brutality/scream therapy it will knock all the wits out of ya and bring ya back for the dead....some other important notes special guests such as members of fugazi.bikini kill and alec makaye help out on this live album...

4 out of 5 stars Better Then the Make Up.......2003-08-27

Well, NOU are a very great, totally underrated band, particularly in relationship to the Refused, which is an OK, but not totally great band. This band is better then the Make Up. This is their best record.

5 out of 5 stars Paradox of the greatest band to ever exist.......2003-08-17

NOU emerged and collapsed with the same sonic synchronicity belying each song of their plan. America could only crumble so beautifully and then re-emerge in splendor when playing pretty for baby. Although I favor their second album, this one should not be overlooked. The personify the postmodern age while ultimately deconstructing with their songs. If Derrida were a musician, this is the band he would join.

5 out of 5 stars punk with a crazy trumpet twist.......2003-04-06

i bought this because i love the make up, and n.o.u. has at least two of the same members, most importantly the awesome i. svenonius, known for his crazy baby-like singing. while not as good as the make up, i think this is a great cd in its own right, and definitely has a more old school punk feel than the make up, who are truly original and defy easy description but rock like theres no tomorrow basically with some of the most original riffs ever. i really like this cd because the punk songs rock without sounding corny or contrived, and they do some bold original things that really work, like adding crazed trumpet playing to some of the songs, and it never sounds gratitous or uncalled for. plus, some of the song writing is great.. check out diptheria especially. while most songs are punk, which is great in itself, they mix it up a lot showing signs of what the make up will eventually sound like, especially the aforementioned song, diptheria. i. svenonius's singing is a little more restrained on this cd, but hes still great.

5 out of 5 stars Illegal drugs: a murderous commerce shared by the Govt........2001-11-24

The propaganda of The Futurists movement was a big influence on their liner notes and lyrics and album packaging. They looked like G.I. Joe dolls or gang kids from West Side story during this phase of their career. The cover has the band standing in front of a clever collage of kung fu kids, race horses, and some dame getting dolled up. They wrote songs about over the counter household drugs and The Peoples Republic Army of the Philipinnes.

They had an incredible concept and wrote dynamic songs with the most original lyrical content of their day. They made you want to dress like Jack Lord and be plotting to blow up something institutional.

The title of this album insures that their records will never be sold at Best Buy or Walmart alongside label mates Fugazi's cd's. I almost expect it to get banned these days.

4 out of 5 stars takes me back.......2000-06-01

Indicative of a time when the punk rock DIY spirit was in decline, N.O.U breathed life into an otherwise dead genre. Pulling from various gospel influences (if not musically, then in tone and intention), 13-Point Program was a wake up call to get off your ass and do something. Self referencing high school dilemmas and the realities of being a kid (exemplified in 'A Kid Who Tells On Another Kid Is A Dead Kid' and 'Today I Met The Girl I'm Going To Marry'), the youthfullness of N.O.U comes through with such passion that you almost want to relive the torture of high school all over again.

This was not the greatest release from Thizz entertainment. It is a mix of a majority of older material with some newer stuff. (by older I mean stuff recorded while MAC DRE was alive) After listening to this release I think that Dubee, PSD, and Rydah J Klyde is da dopest out the crew. While Mistah FAB sounded nice as hell. I thought he was gay or something, but he spits more like MD on his cut I dont Know than any other Thizzims. ImeanImean.

Album Description

22 tracks of pure GG assembled by GG's brother, Merle, and original executive producer, Mykel Board.

From the All Music Guide:
This is a compilation of live performances from various points in his career. Of course it's missing a great deal of relevant information and the recording quality is crude. This is probably the best place to be introduced to the demented moron who made obscenity a political statement, as he was still possessed of an intelligible voice on these recordings. He can even carry a tune on the earlier tracks, unthinkable to those familiar only with his later work. His between-song banter with the audience is hilariously stupid. It features guest appearances from Dinosaur Jr.'s J. Mascis and the MC5's Wayne Kramer and Dennis Thompson. Most of Allin's earlier recordings are out of print, so if you're a fan, find this. — Steve Huey

4 out of 5 stars a good introduction to his legacy.......2006-12-25

For those who have only heard about GG Allin, heard about him crapping on stage, kicking and punching his audience members while yelling at them for not understanding him, drinking his own urine and spitting it out back at the audience, chasing women in the audience while yelling "I wanna rape you", making it clear that he hates everyone while declaring war on underground punk because "I don't fit in with anyone", maybe you've even seen footage of him doing all these things but the bad bootleg quality made it difficult to actually hear the songs he screamed, then Hated in the Nation is a good start for you. Why? Well while many people think that his early stuff with the Jabbers (his first album "Always Was, Is, and Always Shall Be" 1980) is the only good material GG ever put out, and yes his stuff with the Jabbers was tight, the problem was that it was too tight. GG hadn't become the crazy nihilist that we know him as now. He was rather tame and one of the Jabbers recently said "the only thing GG did that was shocking back then was go to church with his wife every Sunday".

Hated in the Nation is a good middle ground between newer and older GG because it contains good punk rock up there with the Jabbers while also containing the angry vulgar and violent lyrics that we expect from later GG Allin. His backing bands at this time were the Scumfucs and the Cedar St Sluts (a girl band). This is classic GG. Even better, the album also contains live samples of GG doing some lengthy rants at the audience. My only problem with this album is that the rants usually don't fit the theme of the song that comes after the sample rants. "Any girls that want to get raped, you should be sitting in the front row here" but then the album breaks out into the song "Gimme Some Head" when it should break out into "I wanna Rape you". Another sample of him talking about being a teachers pet and having sex with his teacher was nice, but the song breaks out into "Sluts in the City" when it should break out into "Teachers Pet". "I Wanna Rape You" and "Teachers Pet" are both good classic GG songs but neither appears on this album. I would also prefer the Scumfucs version of "D, F, & F" rather than the New York Superscum remake version that appears on this compilation. Among Cedar St Sluts songs, I think Bad Habbits should have been on here and not Sluts in the City. Bad Habbits is better both musically and lyrically.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome album of the king of SCUM GG Allin!!.......2004-04-25

This is not a studio album. It is, in fact a compilation of studio tracks and live material from 3 or 4 different performances. Still it lives in my mind as one of, if not THE BEST GG Allin album. This was my first GG album purchased in 91' when I was only 11 ( no wonder I'm so @#$%ed up!) and I STILL listen to it all the damn time. The version I bought back then didn't have the three bonus tracks thats on the current version though so your getting an even better deal now.
I love so many of the songs on this album, all of them in fact, but some I just love so much better than others. If your allready a GG fan, Cool, trust me, buy this album, its not just another live reshash of previously released stuff. Its quality merits it its own status as a full album. For those of you who have never listened to GG, this would be a PERFECT place to start. Go ahead, take a chance on the other side...whats the matter? Afraid you might like it?
This album needs to be preserved and shown to all the future generations of de-generates and juvenile wastoids just like it was to me back in 91' in Thrasher magazine. After I read the article I just had to go out and find the album. And my life has just gone steadily downhill ever since....Mission Accomplished!!

3 out of 5 stars got poop?.......2003-12-20

i'm in a quandry as to how to address this disc. on one hand, redeeming social value of any kind is absent, musically its either generic hardcore or sluggish metal, & lyrically its about as offensive as possible. this cd is the aural equivalent of being thrown up on. on the other hand, a lot of it is kinda fun! the in between "song" patter (recorded live) is frequently uproarious (i wasn't aware of gg's love of animals until i heard this) and the "songs" recorded early in his career are at least entertaining (classic line: "you tell me to kiss your a--/well bend over buddy, here comes my foot!" - dylan has never written a line as great as that). unfortunately, "tunes" recorded only a few short years later are quite awful: badly recorded, badly played, and badly "sung". most of the reviews for this platter are along the lines of "if you have to get one...", which is about as good of an endorsement as possible for a gg allin cd. so buy it and have a merry christmas beating up your family & pooping on them.

1 out of 5 stars I've heard better.......2003-09-04

This is truly a sad & disgusting CD, filled with vile and degrading lyrics that anyone with a four-letter vocabulary could easily write. Amazingly, a label produced it and people buy it. Don't waste a nickel on this noise.
