Originally a two-record set, this live recording has been split and released as separate albums, volume 1 and volume 2. No matter, it's an essential document of one of the finest and most innovative rock bands of all time. 1969: Live catches the band at a juncture in their career, still reeling from the departure of John Cale and settling into the addition of multi-instrumentalist Doug Yule, who would help the band find their rocking heart. Thank god that Maureen Tucker was still around--her inspired, primal drumming makes this recording such a delight. Her quiet thumping on "Lisa Says" is understated and touching, and her timpanic, thunderous rolls on "New Age" are nothing short of awesome. Lou Reed is particularly loose and chatty, more comfortable with his voice as he stretches to hit some tender passages. And the version of "Rock and Roll" here is perhaps the finest of all it's many versions, epic in scope and focused in intensity. --Tod Nelson

5 out of 5 stars Postcolonial flashback.......2006-11-05

Born in India in 1976, I heard this group in 2006 after graduating from an art school in the US, the way I could associate with these voices only confirms time-space-less-ness of good music at large!

4 out of 5 stars Late Velvet Underground live.......2006-11-03

This disc is consistently good. It reflects the late Velvet Underground which is indisputably Lou Reed's band. I can't imagine why they ever tried to make a studio record after Lou Reed left, but apparently they did.

Each of the four Velvet Underground studio albums is a very different experience. Although this live disc pulls material from all four albums, it is played through a post-Loaded prism which is usually more straightforward rock-oriented. They play rock as well as anyone, but I still think the dynamic between John Cale and Lou Reed was what gave their early work such a special quality.

That said, a lot of these songs are played to the point where monotony becomes positively trance-inducing, and with a casual, absolute conviction that you won't find many places.

5 out of 5 stars Better live than in the studio.......2006-10-08

These two discs rank right up there with the Heartbreakers' "Live at Max's Kansas City" as some of the best live music ever recorded. The band is loose, John Cale is gone, and the VU sound comfortable being a rock and roll band. The flawed sound just makes it all the more poignant. I agree that some of these versions are better than the originals. One difference from the original LP is the version of "Heroin". The original is on volume 2. I still like the one on volume 2 better, but this one is different enough to be interesting, a little more urgent. These might be the albums I'd take on a desert island.

5 out of 5 stars If your Looking for a "Live" performance of the The Velvet Underground...........2006-09-08

Apparently, the story goes, that one of "Maureen Tucker's" (Velvet's Drummer), biggest regrets, in her tenure with the band, was that there is a distinct lack of quality `Live' performances of the band. And a quick peruse through the bands discography points to this being the case, with only a small handful of releases available and most largely lacking a suitably reprehensive documentation, of the band at a key point in their existence, as one of the most progressive and influential Proto-Punk, Experimental-Rock, and druggy Rock & Roll acts to ever take to the stage. And so, this is...far and away, the best `Live' Document of the bands performances, with each member giving the songs here a grittier and more dramatic/ aggressive feel. Arguably what this means is that the tracks that most will only be familiar with via the studio albums, will be surprised at how different some of these slightly re-jigged `Live' performances are. Whether it's the hypnotically slow and detached drone of "Sweet Jane", or the beautifully dramatic ebb and flow of "What Goes on", lend each of these songs seem to have a more sleazy and precarious edge, that although the studio versions were certainly not lacking in, these versions feel more visceral, and truly representative of the band. Lou Reed, in particular...growls/sneers/scowls...throughout the more up-tempo numbers, and maintains a sombre/bittersweet/poignant tone whenever the songs necessitate are slow ballad-style. With his guitar work throughout being particularly impressive. But this isn't to take anything away from the rest of the band, whom give as committed a performance as Reed. With Sterling Morrison guitar work, chiming perfectly with Reed's to make for a truly thrilling rhythm section , and Doug Yule's contributions on bass, just about holding the whole thing together, like some dangerously out of control vehicle, with the wheels about to fall off.

But the band remain at their most impressive when working through the material that allows them to truly tear things up, and so on tracks like "Heroin", "I'm Waiting for the Man" & "Rock & Roll" get fierce and intense reworkings that differ slightly from the studio versions by being noticeably rawer, passionate and nihilistic...with the sense of hostility towards the audience, the listeners at home....Hell, virtually everyone!!??, and it's one of the key reasons, that so brilliantly illustrates why keen fans of bands / aficionados , are generally curious to check out `Live' performances of their favourite acts, just to hear that intensity that sometimes doesn't transfer as well on studio albums, as they do on `Live' recordings. And although The Velvet Underground were more widely known for being such a groundbreaking acts that although selling minor amounts of records by todays standards, went on to influence virtually any wannabe drug-f***ed guitar band, with a penchant for decedent lyrics. But this `Live' performance disk (as well as Volume 2), illustrates that the Velvet's were as staggering `Live' as they were in the Studio. This is almost certainly a release that is of no use to the casual fan, the Studio albums (or a compilation) with satisfy those with only a passing interest in the band. But for the keen fan, this is by far the best recorded document of the band `Live' output, and therefore remains an essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars it made me forget I hate texas........2005-06-17

Great album, "Waiting for my man" and "Lisa Says" are my favorite songs on this but "Heroin and "Rock n' Roll" are pretty close, all the songs are classics and played perfectly. I think my favorite thing about this is the beggining when they talk about the cowboys/eagles game.

It's the rarest of live albums whose songs add anything to the majesty of the original studio recordings. This one adds immeasurable data to the Velvet's story. Without 1969: Live we might never have known that they were more than just an art outfit, that they could actually rock with fury. Check out Reed's strumming on "What Goes On" if you want to have your mind blown. None of these staples of the V.U. catalog can be truly known without hearing these fully formed, fleshed-out versions, so for history's sake alone we must treasure this. History's tragedy of course is that we get to hear the excruciatingly light applause--it sounds like there's only 10 people in the room at some points--after each course in ass kicking. They were wrongly under-appreciated in their time, and for this we must all pay forever by playing this record constantly. --Gene Booth

5 out of 5 stars It nearly drives me crazy...".......2007-01-04

The Velvet Underground's lack of commercial success is proof positive that the record-buying public has no idea what it's doing. Not only was Lou Reed one of the greatest songwriters and guitarsts of the 60s, but he was at the head of one of the most accomplished musical groups ever assempled: Drummer Maureen Tucker was capable of turning simplicity into a thing of great beauty, lead guitarist Sterling Morrisson was worth a few thousand Jimmy Pages, while multi-instrumentalists John Cale and Doug Yule (the latter was hired to replace the former after he left the band shortly before this album was recorded) excelled on everything from the electric organ to the electric viola.

Recorded in the early days of Yule's tenure with the group (but released much later than that), the two volumes of Live 1969 show the Velvets moving away from the experimentally inclined post-psych of their first two albums and towards a more direct, rock and roll-oriented sound. The Velvets, fantastic rock group that they are, sound awesome on these two records: They're capable of both astounding, energetic jams ("Ocean" opens this volume gorgeously, awash in swirling drums and guitars, while "Heroin" is a cathartic, explosive epic that shows off the group's more experimental edge), gorgeous ballads (The version of "Pale Blue Eyes" found here is every bit as heartbreakingly beautiful as the studio rendition, while "I'll Be Your Mirror" closes the proceedings on a haunting, ethereal note), and straightforward rock 'n' roll ("Sweet Bonnie Brown/ It's Just Too Much" is pure speed-addled rockabilly insanity, while "White Light/White Heat" is an explosivly greasy master stroke).

Still, my personal favorite moment on the album is "Over You," one of the group's most under rated and overlooked tunes. At a painfully brief two minutes and seventeen seconds, "Over You" whispers it's way through a couple of simple, understatedly beautiful verses, a delicatly emotional chorus, and a downright haunting guitar solo. This hidden gem is the very definition of beauty-in-simplicity, and it's one of rock's many unheralded masterpieces.

Anyway, both volumes of Live 1969 are fantastic. Anyone with the slightest interest in rock should give them both a listen.

5 out of 5 stars it's really lovely.......2006-02-27

This LP in it's original Double-album form was one my favorites of the era (the early seventies being a little sparse and sometimes unoriginal), but when the CD's came out, they split the thing into 2 separate discs. So this one has lots of dreamy, drug induced pop ("pale blue eyes', "I'll be your Mirror') , and some atmospherics ('Ocean')as well as the classics ("Heroin, White Light/White Heat').
Good for fans, good for people who liked their studio stuff, also.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2005-01-17

Basically, if you're into the vu, you'll be into them live. There's almost no other way of looking at it. Their live performances are the most innate I've ever heard. So, if you're having some sort of dilemma regarding which live albums to spend your hard earned currency on, here's a suggestion: 1969: The Velvet Underground Live Vol.'s 1 & 2, Live at MKC, and the Quine Tapes. Those are the best live performances I've heard from the band. My personal favorite is the 1969: The VU Live Volume 1, but it's all personal preference.
I suppose I've gone off on a bit of a tangent - forgetting this was a review for 1969 Vol. 2. Well, the album is amazing. You're really doing yourself an injustice by not buying it. Trust me, the technicalities don't need to be described: just buy it, listen to it, and be inspired by it.

5 out of 5 stars No collection is complete without it.......2003-05-09

The version of "Ocean" on this album is mind-blowing. You have to buy the CDs just for that. The rest of the Vol. 2 CD is excellent, as is Vol. 1, but that recording of "Ocean"...oh, it's impossible to do any justice to it here.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST Velvets Album.......2003-04-30

This is one of the rare cases when volume 2 is better than the first. Of course, it would be best to buy both but if you have to pick one, pick this volume.

This is the album that made me really appreciate the Velvets. I love live music and this album really captures the band as they were meant to be heard -- Jamming, Moody, Rock and Roll. The first 3 songs especially (Ocean, Pale Blue Eyes, and Heroin) have reverberated in my musical memory for a very long time.

A GREAT FIRST VU ALBUM! If you know the Velvets or even just think you might like them, you can't go wrong with these live concerts.

5 out of 5 stars The best Various Artists compilation disc ever made.......2007-02-15

Compilation discs are a dime a dozen and many are quite good but many more are a waste of time. My review title is not hyperbole. First, all of the artists who appear seem to ratchet up their performances because they are playing for such a terrific cause established by one of contemporary music's most respected stars. Even though the artists all donate their talent to the Bridge School Concerts, one can surmise that getting a call from Neil and Pegi Young to appear is a thrill.
Naturally, all of the performances are excellent since they have been carefully chosen from many shows, but my favorite tracks are the five in a row from Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, Pearl Jam, the Love Mongers (the Wilson sisters from Heart), and Nils Lofgren.
Bowie's complete set here has been widely bootlegged and it's easy to see why. Likewise, Vedder's vocal is brilliant, but the Wilson sisters cover of Zeppelin's Battle of Evermore is uncanny.
The fact that all of the performances are unplugged is an added treat since most of these songs are electric in their original incarnations.

Please do yourself and the Bridge School a favor and buy this c.d.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be better!.......2004-02-07

This CD brings me to (good) tears every time I hear it! The music is beautiful in its simplicity. These are true legends at their finest. The fact that their hearts are open to this wonderful cause only adds to their talent and the strength of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2000-06-08

First. It helps if you like acoustic guitar. Second. Even if you don't you won't be able to find any other CD that even comes close to capturing the raw talent of some of today's legends. I can't help thinking that Neil Young tells all of the performers to "keep it simple". Vocals and a guitar work wonders with these kids. Tom Petty's guitar work is astounding, Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) vocals are pure, Simon & Garfunkel...wow, Pearl Jam...I'm now a fan, listen closely and Neil say's it best..."Elvis (Costello) you're a genius!", the best song in my opinion is Nils Lofgren. It's simply elegant. I came here to write this because I love music and this is the best album I have EVER purchased! Please Neil...MORE! I'll be sending a donation.

after seeing neil young's 1999 bridge school concert, i listened to this CD and immediately felt like sending $1,000 to the bridge school (if only i could afford it!). seriously, this album is the most excellent collection of artists and their songs that i have heard. most collections are unlistenable after the first listening, but this album can be listened to over and over!

This fine overview's title is a bit of a misnomer; the "story" of the towering British punk group is not told in a linear fashion and is far from complete. If you allow yourself to simply absorb the many flavors of the Clash without any notions of perfection, you'll marvel over the passion of "This is Radio Clash," the indignation of "Magnificent Seven," the raging anger in "London's Burning" and "White Riot," and the snide humor of "Safe European Home." The group's ability to tone things down without losing steam in songs such as "Career Opportunities" and "Spanish Bombs," and their experimentation with different textures and moods on tracks like "Armagideon Time" and "Somebody Got Murdered" remind one just how adventurous and fresh they were during their late '70s and early '80s heyday. This two-disc retrospective should entice listeners to delve deeper into the early releases of one of the most important rock bands of their time. --Lorry Fleming

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-05-13

The first song I heard of the Clash was Rock the Casbah. And I bet I was not the only one who thought they were singing F**k the Casbah. I think that may be the reason I paid so much attention to the Clash.
They are such a "fun" band. Seeing them in concert, it always looks like they are having fun. It has to be fun singing "Lost in the Supermarket". This album is full of classics, and drips nostalgia with songs like "Straight to Hell", "Capital Radio", and "Somebody Got Married". Go buy it!

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasing Introduction to a Critical Band.......2006-11-15

This collection was initially released in 1988 and has been subsequently remastered along with the rest of The Clash's catalogue. One thing that will be instantly obvious is that each CD doesn't take advantage of the running time that each disc has (there's roughly 50 minutes of music on each disc). However, in terms of serving as an introduction to The Clash, this record does a fine job despite only presenting an hour and forty minutes of music.

Despite a total disregard for chronology, this collection does give you a vague indication of the band's eclectic nature. The first disk is more interested with the band's forays into genres that extend beyond "punk." The second disk, meanwhile, focuses more on the unfettered aggression of their early days. When both discs are taken into a count, they tell the tale of a band who dared to extend the reach of their musical frontier.

For begginers who have heard a scant few songs and wish to delve into the band, this set will suffice (unless they fancy purchasing the band's entire discography). It's not as skimpy as the singles collection, but its not as pricey as "The Essential Clash." As such, if you want to get into The Clash, this collection will give you a hint of what they could acheive at their greatest moments.

3 out of 5 stars out o' date.......2006-04-28

The existence of this compilation is no longer justified.
Get thee to _The Essential Clash_.
Or better: _Clash on Broadway_. That and _London Calling_ might be all you ever need.
This is not on the list.

4 out of 5 stars The dirty truth about the Clash.......2005-10-15

If you have visions of spittle-spewing, tattoed and pierced, odd-haired miscreants who have as much facility on their instruments as the average zoo monkey when you hear the phrase "punk music", this collection will likely be quite a surprise. The dirty truth is this: Underneath the exterior image and the left-leaning politics, The Clash are really, at heart, a great pop/rock band (albeit an "edgy" one). Listen to "Stay Free" and you'll hear echoes of Merseybeat bands. The faux disco beat underlying "This is Radio Clash" and "The Magnificent Seven" dare you not to dance. The handclaps slathered throughout "Rock the Casbah" are straight out of bubblegum. Reggae also pops up in "Straight to Hell" and "Armagideon Time" among others. Most of the stereotypical "punk" numbers are found on Disc 2, but there's quite a bit here if you aren't necessarily a fan of scream/shout raveups.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Rock the Casbah" makes the case that Middle Eastern rockers are revolutionaries and took it to the charts while doing so with its irrestible "Shariff don't like it!" chorus. "This is Radio Clash" is "aural ammunition" against the status quo, while "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" poses that eternal question of troubled relationships. "Train in Vain" recounts the aftermath: once she's decided to "go". ("All the times/When we were close/I'll remember these things the most/I see all my dreams come tumbling down/I won't be happy without you around..")Despite the dark subject, it rides a brisk harmonica/guitar rhythm. "I Fought the Law" is a nifty remake of the 60s rabblerouser, while "White Riot" is their own anthem of unrest. "Career Opportunities" are hard to find for the working class of England. "Stay Free" is their "Glory Days", a reminiscence of their days of youth and not-so-innocence. "London Calling" is a punk "The Times they are A-Changing". ("Engines stop running but I have no fear/Cos London is drowning and I live by the river..") "English Civil War" appropriates the ancient military ballad "When Johnny Comes Marching Home", turning it into an anthem for the angry English underclass young.

LOW SPOT:
"Capital Radio" suffers from a roughly 3 minute long (and not particularly interesting) "interview" with the band prior to getting into the song. The song itself is only average, making it completely anti-climactic.

BOTTOM LINE:
You don't have to be a "punk" fan to like the Clash. Give 'em a try if you like basic bare bones rock and roll.

4 out of 5 stars OK But They Screwed Up Capitol Radio Track.......2005-07-16

The Clash, on retrospect for me were very cool, and I still
listen to this set now, being 41 (although not everyday, once in a while). Like others have said the songs are all mish mashed
out of order, so thats why the 4 stars, but also they put an interview on the same track with Capitol Radio. Why? The interview is on the front of the track and it's longer than the song! Plus the interview sucks! The audio is horrible and its like the guys rambling on while on a train. I like the song Capitol Radio a lot too because I think they are refering to a pirate radio station that broadcast off a ship in the waters off New York when I was living there late 70'sh. That station was awesome playing punk and early new wave rock while stations like WPLJ played Led Zep and Pink Floyd ad nausem (the whole scene was moving real fast and it disappeared way before you were ready for it to). Oh well, I stayed with BAD a little and the first two cd's are cool driving music. This collection is the Clash so if you want the Clash here it is, just packaged like crap.

Groovy 60s sounds from the land of smile! Incredible and ultra rare recordings from Thailand in the 1960s. 2004.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-12-31

To think this sublime compilation was nearly lost forever is disturbing. Contrary to the previous review, the poor recording quality does nothing to detract from the joy of this music. Put simply, I can't listen to these songs without smiling. To hear a song like "Yipmerdai" for the first time is worth at least the price of the collection. Anybody who is searching for a new source of melodic bliss need look no further than this page.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality recording........2006-10-11

This is a very rare compulation put together from a bunch of really scratched up 45's found in someones garage in Thailand. Some interestng cuts but not worth the price.

3 out of 5 stars Its OK not the best of the Pebble Series.......2006-05-03

This CD wasn't bad its just not up to par with the rest of this awesome series. Now I really don't dig the surf vocals their too clean and poppy for my tastes. I likes my music with some sugar but also with a greasy blast of a bacon cheeseburger chased down with a bitter tequlia! I like surf vocals that are rowdy and raunchy like Surfin' Bird. There is some good ones on here like The California Sun's "Masked Grandma", Lloyd Thaxton telling you what it takes to be a surfer in "Image of a Surfer", the awesome gritty sloppy surf punk by the Readymen called "Shortnin' Bread", then the alcholic song "Wine, Wine, Wine" by the Bleach Boys. Then its on to my favorite part of the CD the instrumentals cheif among them being "LSD-25" by the Gamblers this is probably the first drug record since it was recorded in 1961! Then the last song "Big Surfer" by Brian Lord a insane song where the guy sounds like a Jhon F. Kennedy clone. There is strong material on this CD but I expected better out of the pebbles series.

5 out of 5 stars An UFO in the peebles serie : surf music at its best.......2005-09-10

This is the only Peebles presenting Surf Music. The good thing is that they worked in the same way on this one to find obscure surf songs with "something".
A great collection of surf songs (mostly vocals) including less known songs from great bands (Pyramids, Rivieras,...). On the CD vs vinyl, they added bonus tracks from even more obscure surf/hot rod bands... and even the almost impossible to find instrumental "LSD25" of the gamblers. A great album.

4 out of 5 stars Good Surfing Tunes!.......2005-04-08

If you listen to this CD on its own merits, without comparing to the other PEBBLES volumes, you will find this is a great collection of Surf tunes. Original cracks and pops from the 45s left in for that crazy beach 45 player ambience. If this is your thing, try Ace Records BEACH PARTY reissue also. COWABUNGA!

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother unless you're a surf rock completist.......2004-06-02

Despite wearing the PEBBLES moniker, this is as far as you can get from a garage band compilation! Veering from the dark recesses of America's high school garages, this volume instead reissues ultra-obscure surf rock tunes. Unfortunately, this time round the tunes have remained obscure for a reason: they all try to be the next Jan & Dean or The Beach Boys. A few cool songs, including The Dantes' "Top Down Time", still don't justify purchasing this one. Skip it and move on to the real PEBBLES!

5 out of 5 stars You need a little jump of electrical shockers........2007-05-28

This is The Story of the Clash, Volume 1 (there is no Volume 2). It features 100 minutes of some of the Clash's best songs. Of course, this isn't all the good material they recorded, but everything here is great, so that makes it 5 stars in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Probably one of the Best Best Of Compilations that there ever was!.......2005-09-11

If you are looking for the best retrospective of The Clash out there, this is it!

Not only are all the tracks remastered but they are arranged in a very cohesive track order to make the whole double cd album sound very smooth as it goes along and not disjointed like many other compilations that just go with chronology.

If you want chronology, just arrange your track selection/shuffle function on your cd player and stop complaining already. Obviously a lot of thought has gone into this track selection and I, for one, think it's a good one.

Get this and "London Calling" and you basically have all the best these guys have done. A very important band in the history of rock music so can you afford not to have this in your collection?

4 out of 5 stars The Clash is the best band ever.......2005-01-25

Great CD, great tracks, some missing, but good overall. The Clash is the defining band of the 80s and this disc proves it. If you like the Clash, I suggest checking out the Dead Milkmen, Butthole Surfers, and Dead Kennedys, ROCK ON!

4 out of 5 stars Kingstonstaples has no idea what he's taliking about........2003-02-18

The above person obviously has no clue about Punk music or the spirit of Punk. The Clash is one of the definative bands of the scene, in the late 70's and 80's. The Sex Pistols were the biggest sell outs, and did not start the movement...they sold it to the world and were manufactured just like the Backstreet Boys to sell clothes for Vivienne Westwood and make money for Malcolm MacClaren. All of the band from that era were influenced by eachother and developed there own styles that evolved over the years. Punk has no formula, It had it's roots and influences way before The Pistols. The Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls...were some of punks biggest influences. The Clashes contempararies..Blondie, The Jam, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division among others all had distinct sounds and pulled in many influences like reggae, and synths as they evolved. I find bands that stick with the same three chord "formula" are dull and unimaginative. And without the Clash were would a band like Bad Religion be?? The Clash actually sang about politics and issues that mattered. Talk about selling out...have you been to a Van's Warped Tour lately. Rancid are a fine band...and am sure they would site The Clash as a big influence. Buy this album, If you would like a well rounded overview of the band. By the Albums they are better.

5 out of 5 stars truly the clash.......2001-07-09

This album is undoubtably contains a large number of there best musical composistions. Its definitley a work of art wiht songs like "Magnificent 7," and "Train in Vain." If your young like me and are just starting to get intrested in punk and The Clash buy this record. It's practicly complete with every great song they made only a few songs are missing from this incredible record. If you enjoy this record listen to London Calling and Sandinista. Much love. peace.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for VU Fans.......2006-10-14

More raw and experimental than "69 Live." Better (and warmer) sound, to my ears, than Max's. Never mind the tape hiss and lo-fi--the music gets through. As others here have said, this is not the best place to begin listening to the Velvets, but if you already are a fan, you will love it. The sprawling stretches of "Sister Ray" and other extended versions of VU songs are a revelation. There is nothing like the shock of hearing a band you revere live for the first time. This set can bring you quite close to that experience.

5 out of 5 stars AND THE ANSWER FOR ALLTIME.......2006-06-01

IS THE Velvets, who went Underground "a thousand Years ago",resurfaced and are proof positive that being underground and the "Consequence" for returning is as enigmatic, pure, solid, like Stonehenge. Do not worry if this is your first Velvet Cd. You are now solidified into the master's of the Dark. Now my people, go buy this CD and find out why such a progressive group in the mid 60's are just as exhilirating, provocative and even so they remain such. Buy this Cd, like 3 cd's for $30.00 and forget about seeking out "The Man".There's alwys "Tomorrrow's parties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cest Genial Oui oui je acheter une cd de lan velvet underground pour noel.......2005-12-09

these cds are good and all and people should get them or download them (pirated or whatnot) the velvets were a very underrated band, (jacob ingerson stfu, you dont know music) but i recommend this to people who have listened to them beefore ,and are used to them. This album is live and i think peopel should listen to them at hi-fi studio recorded sound first but, hey if you want to dive right in and hear what the music and what they were live at their best get this album. The thing that i like best about them is the simplistic package design and, that these tapes actually exist, its amazing, if your going to complain about the sound quality, you should try and record a live show and preserve the the tapes for a quater of a century. the magic and the moments that happen a great and you get thrre disks of it so i think its pretty good. Also there are extensive liner notes in a booklet that are entertaining

2 out of 5 stars Run, Don't Walk, to Live at Max's Kansas City (Deluxe)!!!.......2005-03-26

For completists only. I TRIED to enjoy these discs, but the sound is terrible. Live at Max's Kansas City (Deluxe) is such a better "bootleg"!! It renders these Quine recordings for study only, not enjoyment. And if you REALLY want to hear the Velvets at their greatest live, check out "Live 1969, Vol.1" & "2".
Also, for 30 bucks, the packaging is really cheap and minimal. I know they're supposed to be bootlegs, but GOOD bootlegs are usually beautifully packaged! NOT worth 30 bucks. Worth about 10 bucks, folks. I was very disappointed with the Quine Tapes.

5 out of 5 stars Another Unbelivable Hidden Treasue Released!.......2004-11-11

Im very surprised no one reviewed this yet, so here goes.

People who buy this album, should be familiar with the studio albums and (at least) a bit of the live recorded material to feel the full effect of the all out SHOCK! that comes from exploring the "Quin tapes". Basically, these Recordings come from a series of shows the Velvets played in San Francisco, (1969), which was at the time, the home of psychedelica itself. The Velvets were far from home, and just as far away from the hippie, summer of love ideology. Robert Quin, recorded the shows with the band's permission and in fact went on to become a fantastic guitar player often playing with Lou Reed's solo efforts. Quin actually lost his precious tapes, and what we get here is just a greatest hits reel that survived the rigors of time.

A true Velvet fan will notice the significance of these recordings immediately; Jams all over, Lou improvising new words on the spot, tons and tons of one of a kind moments. Unbelievable version of "Follow the Leader" that would make you think it to be one of the Velvets best, when in fact, its an incredibly rare tune. The Sister Ray>Foggy Notion>Sister Ray, played in the huge family dog auditorium has to be one of the greatest moments of Rock>Avant guard>total jam-out (you still with me?) of all time. Velvet Fans should be massively grateful to Mr. Quin that this material made it to publication. Robert Quin Passed away recently by his own choosing. This album is a monument to him simply because he recognized in 1969 that what the Velvets were doing needed to be recorded. The rest of the world took many years to catch on, and even now, the Velvets are not given the full glory they deserve; The greatest American band of all time. I give this album 5 stars (from the perspective of a Velvet Underground fan, 10 years and still madly in love).

!!This is not entry level material!!
Final note,
I wish Dead heads (Grateful Dead Fans) would get this album, and see that in 1969, the Velvet Underground jammed more and had a larger active repetuoir of original songs than the Dead. Yes I'm a Dead Head too, But the Velvets ARE a Band Beyond Description. Thanks for reading my review

5 out of 5 stars Pebbles on LSD.......2007-06-15

The third entry in AIP Records' Pebbles series, which focuses on obscure mid 60s psychedelic rockers, is one of the most wonderfully "out there" albums ever. Don't worry- this isn't psychedelia of the whimsical "exploding purple butterfly" variety. This is full blown, mind-pulverizing, acid-drenched rock 'n' roll dimentia. Each song sounds like some pimple-popping teenager's bad trip, a heady concoction of hallucinogenic imagery and the kind of manic energy that can only be delivered by 60s garage band. Fuzz guitars and pounding rhythms are mixed with bizarre lyrics, trippy production, instrumrntal freak-outs, and the occasional burst of random noise. The result is a collection of songs that combine the raw joy of standard 60s garage rock with the weirdness of Frank Zappa or the Velvet Underground.

The best songs really are offbeat masterpieces: The Bees' "Voices Green and Purple" is an incredibly effective slice of nightmare-psych, with its ghostly three-note guitar riff, pulsating rhythms, and bloodcurdling screams. The same goes for The Monocles "Spider & The Fly," (NOT a cover of the Rolling Stones tune!) which features a deranged lyrical narration booming over an otherworldly production. There's also Lea Riders Group's "Dom Kellar os Mods," an obscure Swedish classic which builds from a taut, high-stung blues rocker into a full on freak out. The Calico Wall's "Flight Reaction" is a tense, weirdly funny journey into the mind of an acid-head with a terrible fear of flying. The song marries a ringing guitar line with an increasingly chaotic lead vocal and a catchy chorus. The Hogs' "Loose Lips Sync Ship" is gloriously inexplicaple, as are the Driving Stupid's astoudingly unhinged "Reality of Air-Fried Borsk" and "Horror Asparagus Stories." The Third Bardo's "I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time" is a tough, defiant psychedelic teenage anthem that really struts. William Penn Fyve's "Swami" is a hilarious sendup of hippie culture, with a great fuzz guitar-led melody thrown in for good measure. Teddy & The Patches' "Suzy Creamcheese" seriously rocks, with its pounding "Louie Louie" attitude and Zappa-inspired lyrics. And then there's the Race Marbles' indescribable Bob Dylan parody "Like a Dribbling Fram," which alone is worth the price of the CD. Higher Elevation's "The Diamond Mine" works purely becasue of kitsch value- it features some clueless D.J. reciting some "poetry," in which he stumbles helplessly from one psyhedelic cliche to the next, while a cheesy organ-driven noise-fest cranks along on the background.

Basically, it's insane. It's weird. It's one of the best volumes of the Pebbles series. Pick it up right now!

5 out of 5 stars Pebbles has done it again a ACID drenched freak OUT!!!!!.......2006-05-03

They sure have topped themselves if thats possible. One word of advice though don't trip while listening to this GOD knows what corner of your mind you won't be able to get out of. Awesome bands trying to emulate the Doors, the hippie Beatles and Syd Barret to hilarious effect. Higher Elevation is some DJ spouting some stuff thats psychedelic poetry over art noise in " The Diamond Mine", then you got some band called Crystal Chandlier whose lead singer sounds almost exactly like Jim Morrison in the song "Suicidal Flowers", and then you got Psych garage punk insanity complete with gritty vocals in the band "Driving Stupid" and their two awesome songs. Buy this now don't even hesitate.

5 out of 5 stars Psychedelic Dementia.......2002-06-06

Prepare yourself for a brain frazzeling trip through obscure American psych! Other volumes in the Pebbles series are spoiled by beat and frat rock rip-offs, but this one is top notch acid fuelled insanity all the way. The Callico Wall`s nightmarish "Flight Reaction" and The Monocles "Spider and the Fly"- a three minute horror film on record - are among the many highlights. Also included are a couple of great psych novelties such as The Jefferson Handkerchief`s "I`m Allergic to Flowers" which tells the story of a hay fever sufferer`s unfortunate attempts to woo a flower child, not to mention the disturbed genius of Adjeeef the Poet and Oshun.
This, and the equally demented "Beyond the Callico Wall" are in my humble opinion the best two Yank Psych Comps available...Come on kiddies, summer`s here and it`s time to take a trip into the bubbling fudge Sundae of your mind, just watch out for those voices green and purple...............

3 out of 5 stars Great Series,Weaker Volume.......2002-05-13

By all means pick up as many of the Pebbles Volumes as you can if you crave wild 60's garage rock. However #3 (here with some bonus tracks not on my vinyl version)is not one of the better ones that I own. It's less rock and roll, and more psychedelic arty noise. It does have a few real gems especially The Jefferson Hankerchiefs' "I'm Allergic To Flowers" and William Penn IV's "Swami".
