Album Description
We are proud to release the second album in our 'Chicago Soul Series': Just Loving You is an exhaustive collection of 28 tracks by highly acclaimed soul singer Ruby Andrews. Featuring the best of her Zodiac label recordings, dating from 1967 to 1973, including the big hit single "Casanova" plus many rare and in-demand tracks such as the 'northern' soul favourites "Just Loving You", "Wonderful Nite" and "Hey Boy (Take A Chance On Love)". An essential album with detailed liner notes by music historian and award-winning author Robert Pruter.
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive Ruby Andrews Collection...Must Have Chicago Soul Classic........2006-06-30
Most people are sleep on who Ruby Andrews is. For those that don't know, or think they know (because they only heard Cassanova) wake up! This woman is the essence of what Chicago soul singers are really about! Most folk only associate two female singers from Chicago (the late Minnie Riperton and Mavis Staples) and disregard the rest. Ruby Andrews has all the funk Mavis Staples only achieved on one album (the Curtis Mayfield produced A Piece of the Action Soundtrack, which FYI was excellent), and the seriousness of Minnie Riperton classic Come Into My Garden in this collection all in one. For those just finding out about this gem, I would recommend finding a vinyl copy of the 1972 recording of Black Ruby since it hasnt been re-released on CD. However, if you can't, before you play the whole CD in sequential order, listen to the following FIRST:
1. (I Wanna Be) Whatever It Takes To Please You
2. You Ole Boo Boo You
3. My Love Is Comin Down
4. Uh Uh Boy That's A No No
5. Casanova (the first version)
6. You Got To Do The Same Thing
7. The Love I Need
8. You Made A Believer Out Of Me
There are songs on here for everyone. Some are dated, but the funkier cuts are in the aforementioned. Ruby's talent, as well as innovation come out very nicely in this collection; the style of guitar, bass and strings used in some of the songs is very reminiscent of later 70s works of Curtis Mayfield with female singers (mostly Aretha Franklin (Sparkle Soundtrack), Mavis Staples (Piece of the Action Soundtrack), and Gladys Knight (Claudine Soundtrack)) but note: Ruby Andrews did it first!!!
If I had one baby gripe about this compilation, it would be not including Overdose Of Love, which is such a sexy, seductive song IMO that has mystique in it that captures you from the first note to the end. But all in all, you won't be dissapointed.

LOVE THIS CD.......2006-05-18
I've liked Johnny Guitar Watson ever since "Real Mother For Ya". I love his play on words, and funny sayings and his voice is very unique. He can really play the blues. "Superman Lover" is such a good song, it's featured as a character's theme song in the movie "Roll Bounce". I wish a few other songs were included, but as far as an introduction to JGW, this is the CD to get.
Grand Master of Funk.......2005-07-05
The only man to really hit Funk right on the head, he owned it! Whenever I put him on in my car people who have never listened to him before enjoy him right away, his music was always pure enjoyment, the lyrics just made you smile so much.
First listened to him in 1979 in Berlin, and if I feel a bit low then he lifts me all the way up to the top, there was or is no one cooler than the great guitar man.
Regret never seeing him live on stage, he never seemed to get the recognition he deserved, is there anyone out there that is close to this man, I think not?
Johnny's the Man!.......2005-06-15
This is a good starting anthology of JGW. My only regret is that "The Real Deal" is inexplicably missing from it. That is a scat MASTERPIECE. Another thing the above viewer pointed out, is JGW's use of humor in his compositions. I mean, I just CRY when I hear Johnny vamp at the end of "Real Mother For Ya": "Gimme some of that low lead, I ain't gonna fool with nuthin' else! I gotta STOP buying TWO hot dogs and a strawberry soda!" I ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOLL! Every time. I LOVE this man, miss him. I discovered him too late to see him in concert, and that is my greatest regret of all. I play him almost every day. I smile when I hear his voice, his licks, his "Listen"'s between verses. This man IS a giant...right up there...with ANYONE you'd care to name. Johnny "Guitar"? YOU ARE THE FREAKIN' MAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everlasting.......2004-02-27
In need of uplifting vibes? Watson is like a fine wine: "it gets better as it gets older" (George Clinton). Listen - and adjust.
excellent.......2003-08-15
In an interview during the eighties Eric Clapton was asked whether he could name "his favourite guitar player". Johnny Guitar Watson was his answer. Nuff said...

Getting Inside the Lyrics .......2005-06-10
Phyllis Hyman burst onto the scene in 1979 with a couple of #1 R&B/pop dance tracks (You Know How To Love Me and Don't Wanna Change The World), however, her true audience grew to love her as a soulful balladeer, and she is remembered that way by the audience she created in her nearly 20 year career as a popular recording artist. This CD compilation showcases her best-loved ballads. Her interpretation of the lyrics ingnited the love affair she enjoyed with her R&B and jazz fans. This album is based upon her Buddha recordings from the 1977-1978 period. These classic ballads formed a permanent part of her repertoire. While she usually only sang the tunes "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "I Don't Wanna Lose You" in live performances, most of the other songs are well loved by her fans.
Four songs from her debut album for Buddha are also included here, "I Don't Want To Lose You," "Loving You, Losing You," "No One Can Love You More," and "Was Yesterday Such A Long Time Ago." Five of the other songs are taken from the Sing A Song ablum that was never released inside the US, as well as the Hyman-written song "Gonna Make Changes" which exposes some of her social outlooks and concerns. One of the compilation's gems is the standard "Here's That Rainy Day," which is beautifully executed in the interpretive style she is so loved for. "Sounds Like A Love Song" was discovered in the vaults of Buddha records by producer Paul Williams, and would have been another number one hit if it had been released.
Certainly no one collection of Hyman's recordings could capture the genius of Hyman's artistry, but this compilation represents some of the finest material she ever recorded, and many of her fans will find some gems among them. This compilation will prove that Phyllis Hyman's voice and body of work is timeless and will be enjoyed by R&B fans for years to come. If you want to listen to a truly soulful artist with a hypnotic voice unlike any in the industry today, then discover Phyllis Hyman.
A decent and respectable if incomplete collection........2003-06-16
This collection focuses on Phyllis' 1976-78 Buddah product. While essentials like "The Answer Is You", "Gonna Make Changes" and "Betcha By Golly Wow" are included, it would have been appropriate to also include songs from the Arista years(1979-84).
It's Been Done Before.......2002-09-11
This CD is just a repeat of the various Phyllis compilations that concentrates on her stint with Buddah/Arista. The only exception is the inclusion of a previously unreleased gem called "Sounds Like A Love Song". Other than that, you should invest your money into a more comprehensive set, preferably one that concentrates more on her Philly/Zoo years.
Soulful, Talented, Tragic.......2000-06-27
Before leaving this world for the next, the late Phyllis Hyman contributed her voice in singing some of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard. This album, a short compilation of her greatest hits, was the album that introduced me to the legend that Hyman was and forever would be. Songs like "Gonna Make Changes," and "Betcha By Golly Wow," showcase the true vocal talent his singer had. Unlike many of today's soul singers, Hyman's vocals are pure innocence and her style can never be reproduced in today's world of sythesizers and sampling.
If you want to discover one of the greatest jazz voices the music world has ever known, then by this album. Let me warn you, that once you have listened to this album, you will be craving more and more of this talented vocalist.
A must hve for yor music collection.......1999-12-13
No music collection is complete without this piecce. Phyllis is one artist who did not get the recognition that I felt she deserved

Brittany Wells.......2007-05-11
I happened to have featured Brittany Wells on my MySpace site months ago and promote Independent Artists like herself. She personally mailed me her CD as a thank you, and she is the kindest person I know. Her CD is awesome and I have listened to it at least 200 times everytime I get in my car, and I'm still not sick of it. Brittany Wells will be the next Country Star you can count on that and I'm doing everything in my power to make that possible. Simon Cowell always mentions the "it" factor, and Brittany Wells has it all she is the total package. She is beautiful, She can sing and she has a great personality. Be watching for her because she will take the world by storm one day.
VERY GOOD ALBUM !!.......2007-03-31
Not her real name? What the hell does THAT have to do with it? This is a GREAT album that I just happened upon while browsing. Brittany is probably one of Music City's BEST overlooked talents. IMHO she is WAY better than Gretchen or Miranda. She's more talent, less "hook". Some of Nashville's best songwriting talent is represented on this album. If you like country, you'll LOVE it. Don't just take my word for it. Listen to the sample cuts. "Say Anything" is worth the album price alone!
Nothing special.......2006-05-02
Ok...first of all. Her real name is Brittany Wellsfry. Her voice is ok. She won Miss Teen Texas...and her daddy is rich. Nice girl...but the cd is just not good. Sorry babe. You look pretty though.
O.K., nothing special.......2006-04-06
This album is just fine to have in the CD player as background music while you do household chores or study or whatever, but it doesn't capture the listener's attention. Ms. Wells' voice is fine. The songs are mostly unremarkable though, with the exceptions of "Harm's Way", a song about military service that does a good job of being heartfelt and not jingoistic, and "Shoes" which is catchy. The album's not bad; it just doesn't leave you wanting more.
