Product Description
From the land of the midnight sun comes the long awaited solo album from Kooler aka uber producer Sebastian Mullaert , already highly regarded from his pioneering work with Son Kite/Minilogue and superb releases on Digital Structures/Baroque/Sog Records. Dark, daring and emotive 'Open' is the first album to be released on acclaimed progressive label Kamaflage (only 13 releases young) and marks a superb debut for both the label and Kooler. Deep tribal grooves, awesome drops, infectious basslines and futuristic house all come together across these nine blistering tracks to create an album that should find favor with the house heads, breaks crew and the progressive set alike. 2004.

Album Description

European only release features their two late '90s multi-platinum-selling studio albums, Fly (1998) and Wide Open Spaces (1998) in one very affordable package. Although the Dixie Chicks had existed in one form or another for nearly a decade, it wasn't until original members Martie Seidel and Emily Erwin recruited vocalist Natalie Maines that things really took off for the Chicks. Since their debut as a trio (Wide Open Spaces), they have become one of the biggest Country crossover acts in the world. This two CD set includes the hits 'Goodbye Earl', 'Let Him Fly', 'I Can Love You Better', 'There's Your Trouble' and more. Packaged in two standard jewel cases which are housed in a slipcase. Sony.

5 out of 5 stars See My Face.......2007-01-12

What needs to be said about the Dixie Chicks and their first two albums with Natalie Maines as lead singer? Perhaps you, like myself, got interested in their music after Natalie's comment about George W. Bush. Or perhaps you made the mistake of throwing their CD's out to be crushed, only to realize three years later that they were right all along, and now wish you can be forgiven. It does not matter. Songs like Cowboy Take Me Away, Wide Open Spaces and Goodbye Earl are all time classics. If you paid no attention to these songs before, you have no idea what you are missing. You will enjoy them no matter how often you listen to them. There must be some new interest in the Dixie Chicks in Europe for them to re-release these two CD's in one package over there. But perhaps you should buy their newest CD Take the Long Way first (at least to understand the title of this review), then go to see the documentary Shut Up and Sing, and only then buy this set. Whatever. Enjoy these moments while you can. The people on the other side have so successfully ruined their careers for having expressing their views, I would be surprised if the Dixie Chicks will bother to come out with another CD and/or tour ever again. It is a shame.

I still cannot believe these guys are the open... they are even dreamier, jazzier, structurally complicated, different everytime, I mean... it came from being a dreamy good band to a completely different view of their music. They scream, they moan, they say easy things, they say hard-to-say words... great great stuff, believe me.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not like "Eye of the Storm".......2007-01-16

I love Supertramp, Roger Hodgson work. I've owned "In the Eye of the Storm" for many years and came accross "Open the Door". Without hesitation I searched to find it for my collection. The CD is growing on me but not nearly as good as "In the Eye of the Storm". I find it painful to listen to the last 1/3 of "Death at a Zoo". If you are a Supertramp/Roger Hodgson fan, add it to your collection only AFTER you own "In the Eye of the Storm"

        5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2006-11-05

This is Roger Hodgson's finest hour as a solo project! Every song on this CD is a gem. The CD is a little reminiscent of "In The Eye Of The Storm" but it's actually better then that album. It's more musically adventurous, refined, and less pop (also like the direction Supertramp was starting to head). He takes chances on this CD with a variety of instruments and sounds, while still maintaining his unique style. The best part of the CD is the tremendous songs, these are the best songs he has written since Breakfast In America. Had Supertramp stuck together and eliminated the pop/commercial sound of Famous last Words, the result might have been something like the material from "The Open Door". These songs could have stood as a followup to Breakfast In America. Of course Rick Davies would have made a contribution as well, but he has never made anything as good since. After all these years it is a marvelous treat to by something that stands up with other CDs in my collection such as Breakfast In America, Crisis What Crisis, Even In The Quietest Moments, and Crime Of The Century. Yet this CD is of course all Roger Hodgson, but this kind of songwriting and production reminds me of the songs he made and performed for those great albums. Although this is a hard CD to find, it's well worth it and worth the price! Supertramp and Rodger Hodgson fans you must pick up this one!

        5 out of 5 stars A must-have.......2005-09-25

Excellent album. If you enjoyed Supetramps's ballads (Don't leave me now, Know who you are...), you'll love this album : "Say Goodbye" and several others.
If you loved "Fool's Overture", listen to "Open the Door".
And there are great rhythmic songs as well, such as "Hungry" and "Showdown".
All Supertramp fans should get this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Opening This Door (Almost) Returns to Pre-Pop Supertramp.......2005-09-01

On 'Open The Door', Roger Hodgson (almost) takes us back to the incredible elegance and drama of Supertramp before the pop "success" of their 'Breakfast in America.' It's a welcome journey.

From the slow-build opening of 'Along Came Mary' to the politcal commentary (and use of sound bites) in 'Showdown' to the social empathy of 'Death and A Zoo' and the hope of the title track, 'Open The Door' has much of the soul of 'Crime of the Century' and 'Crisis...What Crisis?' mixed with bits of the spirituality on 'Even in the Quietest Moments.' In fact, it's almost a great album.

One is tempted to think that the "almost" is from a lack of Rick Davies. What keeps this terrific album from being truly great, though, lies more in its production. With all respect to Alan Simon and Mr. Hodgson, there are several points on several songs that could have benefited greatly from the inspired taste and creative touch of producer Ken Scott. Clearly, this album has a lot of passion and drama created by Mr. Hodgson and his musical direction. Mr. Scott, however, has a well-deserved reputation for bringing out MORE passion and accenting dramatic musical moments so as to take great songs one step further into the souls of listeners, as he proved on 'Crime of the Century.' Still, this is a HIGHLY-recommended album.

If you're thinking of buying this album to hear Supertramp, however, don't. That would be like buying any one of the former Beatles' solo albums expecting to hear The Beatles. On 'Open the Door,' Roger Hodgson has finally moved beyond being "Supertramp Light," and it's an album that deserves a true, focused listen. I suggest you take an afternoon or evening alone, put on the headphones, and read the lyrics as you listen. And if you really listen, you'll still discover much of the insight, social commentary, passion, and cleverness -- both verbal and musical -- that made you love Supertramp so long ago.

Buy this album, and give it the chance to win you over.

5 out of 5 stars Hodgson Opens The Door.......2004-11-02

"Open The Door," released in 2000, is ex-Supertramp singer Roger Hodgson's first solo album of studio material since 1987's "Hai Hai" (there was also his 1997 release, "Rites Of Passage," but that was a live album). This record is a brilliant return for Roger, filled with his same magic touch for melody, catchy hooks, and powerful, dramatic rock that made his work with Supertramp so special. Great songs from end to end, like the beautiful "Along Came Mary," the poppish "Hungry," the simple-but-memorable "The Garden," and the awesome extended pieces, "Death And A Zoo" and the title song, the latter of which reminds me of the old Supertramp favorite, "Fool's Overture." Hodgson's classic falsetto voice remains in pristine condition, his playing & songwriting simply wonderful. I'm disappointed that "Open The Door," like the latest 'Tramp album, "Slow Motion," is only available on import in North America, but it's totally worth getting. "Open The Door" is a must-buy CD for the Roger Hodgson/Supertramp faithful.

2 out of 5 stars There is absolutely NO reason for you to get this!.......2000-12-25

There is seriously no reason for you to spend money on this single. Sure, "With Arms Wide Open" is Creed's most successful song to date, but truthfully Creed's best material is on their first album called "My Own Prison". If you don't have that album yet, get it first before even thinking about buying this single. And if you MUST have "With Arms Wide Open", get Creed's album "Human Clay", which includes both the album version (obviously) and the strings version as a hidden track. "Wash Away Those Years", the fourth track on this single, is also included on "Human Clay" for your listening pleasure (and is probably one of the best tracks on that CD, for that matter). To summarize, there are 3 reasons why you should NOT get this CD: a) it is overpriced, b) the song is not one of Creed's best and c) out of the 3 B-Sides, 2 can be found on a regular copy of "Human Clay" and the only remaining one is non-essential. If you are looking for a good Creed single with wonderful B-Sdies, I would recommend checking out Creed's "Higher" tour EP, which includes the non-album track "To Whom It May Concern", a live cover of The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" and an alternate acoustic version of (in my opinion) the best Creed song ever: "What's This Life For".

5 out of 5 stars A very touching song by Creed!.......2000-11-10

This is a very touching song that if you listened and heard the lyrics properly, it would touch in the very deepest of your hearts. A love of a father for his newborn baby. That's a bond that will never be broken between now and forever. Think about it.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Not a manufactured sound.......2003-11-14

I have to disagree with one of the earlier reviewers who said that this album was clearly the product of hours and hours in the studio. Having seen the band live twice, I can tell you they sound just the same, except that Martin's voice is even more incredible live, if anything emphasisising his purity of sound and astonishing vocal range.

        5 out of 5 stars mindblowing.......2003-04-14

martin grech will blow your minds, period. True, the radiohead influence may be too out there, but just give it a listen and you won't even care. Oh and the fact that he is 19 years old makes it just plain intimidating. If you dig Martin Grech you should definitely check out MUSE, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars What on earth?.......2002-12-07

It's relatively easy to figure out where Martin Grech is coming from; the Radiohead influence is as clear as day, and "Open Heart Zoo" sounds like one direction that oft-cited band could have taken after "OK Computer." Once you get used to Grech's voice, which in most registers isn't the prettiest of sounds, you might be able to appreciate the gymnastic, hell-bent way he uses it. This is also an album that was clearly the product of countless studio hours; every track has obviously been fussed over, multitracked and stitched together, with the end result in every case sounding more like a collage than a coherent song.

So, to summarize: Radiohead clone, weird but wild voice, crazy-quilt song arrangements. So why do I listen to it so much (to the distraction of my wife, who is immune to its charms)? Is it the last 60 seconds of "Here It Comes," where Grech sounds like a demented qawalli singer, emoting every last ounce of anguish and despair? Is it the earnest self-deprecation and the gorgeous acoustic break of "Push"? Is it the fact that underneath all of the production, all of the mannered vocal weirdness, Grech writes nifty little pop ditties that I find catchy? I don't really know. I do know that if you have any affinity for Bends/OK Computer-era Radiohead, or for Jeff Buckley, you need to at least give this disc a listen. Some more informed or more jaded rock critic somewhere will try to tell me why Grech is lame, why his singing is just a case of someone going way, way overboard, but I won't really hear him, because I'll still have the last echoes of the impossibly high notes Grech hits in "Dali" ringing in my ears...

5 out of 5 stars Creed is the best.......2001-05-03

With Arms Wide Open is an incredable song, and this CD just enhances it... 4 times, that is. Scott Stapp is an amazing vocalist and lyricist and Mark Tremonti is probably the best modern day guitarist in rock music. This CD would be an excellent addition to anyone's CD collection. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
