I love the Blues Brothers and this CD was great! Fun songs for young and old :)

5 out of 5 stars We're on a mission from God........2007-05-31

If it wasn't for Jake and Elwood, the blues would have never had the kind of revival they had 20 years ago. (And there would never have been a House of Blues!) And this concert, this CD, captures all the excitement and joy of blues music. I highly recommend this CD - fun to listen to and a pleasure to play while in your own Bluesmobile!

Jake and Elwood,WHAT MORE IS THERE TO SAY??? THEY WERE GREAT AND SAD THAT JOHN HAD HIS DEMONS,BUT THIS WILL OUT LIVE ALL THE BAD!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for a Fan.......2006-12-17

I purchased this as a "thank you" gift for a business associate that I knew loved the Blues Brothers. I knew nothing about them and was afraid he probably already had this CD. He didn't. In fact, he knew nothing about it. He said that he listens to it every day and it is, by far, one of the nicest gifts he's ever received. So, if you are a fan or know someone who's a fan, I would highly recommend it - just based on the overwhelming positive response I received for giving it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun...and funny.......2006-09-16

This is great album, especially for car listening. It's full of great songs by great talent, and has a good bit of humor to it (Rubber Biscuit is one of my favorites, bow, bow, bow).

On her first CD in three years, the newly married and pregnant Brandy sounds confident and assured and lets us know that she has found her man (even if it takes a numbing 17 tracks). The stately ballad "He Is" shimmers with unabashed, but never treacly, adoration, as Brandy huskily sighs, "Prince Charming, my angel, my king, my friend." It's the sound of a woman in love, and that sentiment guides this satisfying CD's strongest cuts, from Mike City's tangy title track to the snaky seduction of "Apart," which burnishes Brandy's vocals with a metallic glow. Most of the CD was produced by longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins, but he overloads Brandy's plate with bombastic, predictable beats that do little to draw listeners in. Full Moon truly glows when the intensity is muted and emotion is in the forefront. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Brandy's Phases.......2006-11-20

"Full Moon" found Brandy reaching a moment where she was ready to grow as an artist. She again enlisted Darkchild (Rodney Jerkins, et al.) to set-up the musical backdrops that caused "Never Say Never" to become one of the best R&B records of it's time. So, the question in 2002 was, did Brandy bring the goods?

In one word, yes. The arrangements on "Full Moon" divide between the stunning adult balladry & sharper, urban driven dance material. Though the sound is more dark at times, more sensual, & it seems that the transition of adulthood wasn't that hard for her.

On the dance end, you have "What About Us", the lead single. This mechanized, deep grind of a groove was the perfect vehicle for the angst of the subject of a spurned lover. The British two-step inflected "All In Me" is another highlight, & sits next to the dizzying, heavy handed bass laden "I Thought" perfectly. From the urban dance perspective, Brandy paints herself as a modern-day Jody Watley vocally & from a compositonal standpoint. There wasn't a better female empowered anthem that could move you like "What About Us?" at the time since "Looking For A New Love".

For further allusions to Jody comparions, the vocals on the previously mentioned ballads are the true treat. Sensual, probing, emotionally poignant, & convicted. While Brandy didn't handle (beyond some co-write credits) majority of the songwriting, the passion she sings with makes these songs all hers. The title track sets the compostional mood for the ballads. Harder beats, paired with violin & piano work, & Brandy's voice for organic purposes blend here. This pairing of studio wizardry & more soulful elements helps make these ballads warm & inviting.
It drives home the hauntingly spectacular "It's Not Worth It". This song features backing vocals from Michael Jackson, though credit is only listed in the liner notes, it sounds incredible. Brandy's vocals at the fore & Michael's at the back sound like Brandy singing over an old, mournful 1970's soul gem. Other notables include the fitting tribute to the P.M. Dawn classic "I'd Die Without You" (with brother Ray J on vocals), "WOW" wows in it's honesty, & the sweet come-ons that are "When You Touch Me" & "Like This" charm without effort.

Overall, despite the length, "Full Moon" is a rewarding listen. One that brings Brandy's need to connect through thoughts on matters of lonliness, unrequited love, infidelity, true love, romance, & finding oneself in another successfully. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars brandy's best work ever!.......2006-10-31

Till this day it still amazes me how Brandy released this fabulous album in 2002, and yet no-talents like ashanti were getting more attention than her. Brandy and Rodney Jerkins both hit their creative peak with this CD, which is full of r&b and pop tunes with a futuristic millenium sound to it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic :-).......2006-10-21

As I download my cd's onto my ipod, I'm revisiting my old cd's and I came across this gem again.
Brandy has always been one of my favourites. This cd is one of her best; it's some of her most mature music. It's full of great songs and the beautiful voice that keeps getting better with each release. My favourite tracks here are Full Moon, the beautiful remake of Die Without You, WOW and the stunning Love Wouldn't Count Me Out. She is very talented and her vocal range shines throughout this great cd. If you are a fan of hers, this cd has to be in your collection. It's beautiful and I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Vocal Prowess Displayed w/ Great Production Too.......2006-10-18

In 1994, Brandy entered the R&B arena with a voice that belied her age and slick production that proppeled her to instant stardom. In "Full Moon," her third album, that same recipe for success is as prevalent as ever. Brandy has one of the most recognizable and skilled voices in the music industry today. With its emotive raspiness and impressive range, each song on "Full Moon" is given incredible depth, never overpowering the melody yet always staying the focal point. On songs like the soft "When You Touch Me," the soulful thump of "Like This," and the swaying, Eastern-influenced gem of "Apart," Brandy's skill as an interpreter of song is beautifully displayed. She takes commanding possession of each lyric, infusing creative riffs and runs throughout the song to make it undeniably hers. Tracks like "He Is," a soothing ode to a faithful lover, and the feel good, I'm-better-off-without-you anthem "Wow" display her strong lower register that furthers shows Brandy's vocal control. For singers, Brandy is a great model to follow.

It doesn't hurt that the production is impeccable either. Rodney Jerkins and company create a sonic delight, such as with the ethereally pulsating title track or the technological wonder of "What About Us." Each song seamlessly transitions into the next, creating an album that is enjoyable to listen to and admire from beginning to end

...well, almost. While Brandy's voice is certainly at its best, and the production is top-notch, "Full Moon" isn't without its fillers. Songs like "Can We," "Anybody," and "Love Wouldn't Count Me Out" seems like unneccessary additions to an otherwise great R&B album. Nevertheless, Brandy's "Full Moon" is an influential album for aspiring singers and avid music lovers who admire soulful vocal creativity and skill, and for those who enjoy great musical arrangements to accompany such undeniable talent.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Album!.......2006-06-08

This by far my favorite album all of time. Brandy does it again! EVERY song on this album is a hit... From start to finish! Her sound is so mature and it demands your attention. I really enjoy how she stayed away from the cookie cutter songs other artists like her always put out. I recommend this album to everyone who is a fan of R&B, Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, or any type of Music! Thank you Brandy for an awesome album!

Bursting with the airtight harmonies, feet-sweeping melodies, and scrub-free swagger the foursome from Philly's come to be known for, Boyz II Men aren't taking any chances with Full Circle, their sixth studio album (and their first on Antonio "L.A." Reid's Arista label). Full Circle's got everything we expect from the guys: the perfect falling-in-love ballad (the Babyface penned and produced "Color of Love"); the heartrending break-up ballad ("Oh Well," penned alongside mega producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis); the kickback midtempo ballad ( "Relax Your Mind," featuring Faith Evans); and the obligatory uptempo, let's-get-the-party-started number ("Ain't a Thang Wrong"), which is unfortunate, since it's the only track that breaks up the album's candlelit flow. Still, a genuine ardor seeps through the tracks, and Reid's meticulous production makes this outing a far stronger and more satisfying effort than the Boyz' last album, 2000's Nathan, Michael, Shawn, and Wanya. --Sylvia W. Chan

4 out of 5 stars Kind of by the numbers but still a decent album.......2007-01-04

With the 2002 release of Full Circle, Boyz II Men decided to go to guartneed hitmaker "Babyface" for the first single The Color Of Love. Ironically The Color Of Love was orignally given to Sam Salter for his unreleased sophmore CD,Little Black Book and Sam sang it a bit better than the boys from Philly. However Full Circle does have a nice moments to it including Whatcha Need, Luv N U and the excllent yet heartbreaking Oh Well. Oh Well was written by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and even though this song would have sounded great on New Edition's One Love CD, Boyz II Men handle this song with sheer class.

5 out of 5 stars FULL CIRCLE, INDEED.......2004-06-20

Wow! I can't believe I took so long to listen to this album. Early into its release, I heard negative stuff about it because I didn't care much for their previous release, I avoided this one until now...two years later. This album is AWESOME and really is a full circle back to the day when Boyz II Men became my favorite group. I love this compilation of songs and their harmony is as tight as ever here and the songs compliment their voices. In the days when it seems to take very little singing talent to get an music contract, Boyz II Men prove once again that their silky smooth voices rides FULL CIRCLES around the rest of the "boy band" competition! I LOVE YOU, SHAWN! (just had to throw that in) :-)

5 out of 5 stars All time greats.......2004-06-20

Boyz II Men is the best R&B group in history. They have won nearly every award and accolade there is to win, broken numerous music records and brought real talent and beautiful harmonies back to R&B and pop music, totally overshadowing, from a talent standpoint, all the other boy bands and groups of their time.

Boyz II Men has creativity that rival Prince and Michael, and vocal maturity matched only by Gospel greats Commissioned and Take 6.

I used to be a rap fanatic and thought music was for sissies and girls. That is, until Boyz II Men came along and helped me not only discover my voice for music. Now, instead of rapping and hearing girls say, "shut up", now I'm singing and hearing them say, "Oooh, do that again!" Music truly is a manly art when done correctly, as Boyz II Men has proven.

The only weakness of Boyz II Men is their marketing. Some of the best songs never make it to the radio or to video. The American public is partially to blame for turning their backs on Boyz II Men, instead listening to lesser groups who's names I won't mention (please, you know who you are). That's not to say these groups aren't talented - they are - but they're no Boyz II Men by far. Sorry, you're not.

And what is up with the way Americans view this group? I think we were so blown away by their lush harmonies and skillful voices over smooth tracks and slow tempos with great lyrics that we expect them to only sing slow songs. I'm so tired of hearing people say their fast songs aren't good or they're played out. Are you serious? This is a group of skilled men who've perfected their art. If they were martial artists with this same level of greatness, Bruce Lee would not be the best ever, he'd be 2nd to Boyz II Men.

Boyz II Men spends most of their time in asian countries because their largest fan base is there. Why? Wake up, America! This is and always has been a fantastic group, better than any other groups R&B has to offer and they deserve to be paid attention to and recognized as the best there is.

Be it slow, mid to fast tempo, or acappella, Boyz II Men writes and sings some of the best songs ever written. Slow songs like IT'S SO HARD TO SAY GOODBYE, UHH AHH, 50 CANDLES, YESTERDAY, DREAMS, MAKIN' LOVE DO YOU REMEMBER, DOIN' JUST FINE, OH WELL, I DO, LUV N U and I'LL SHOW YOU, they are unmatched in their level of skill. Mid and fast tempo songs such as MOTOWNPHILLY, ON BENDED KNEE, JEZEBEL, THANK YOU, TO THE LIMIT, HUMAN II, WHAT THE DEAL, COME ON, BABY C'MON, ROLL WIT ME, I'M OKAY, YOU'RE OKAY, ON THE ROAD AGAIN and I FINALLY KNOW...no one else in the music business has the depth, variety and maturity that Boyz II Men has. And this isn't even close to half the list of great songs they have!

The only song I haven't really cared much for from Boyz II Men is I CAN'T LET HER GO, produced by Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs. Mixing Puff with Boyz II Men, for this song, anyway, is like mixing dirty water with clean water. All you end up with is dirty water! The song wasn't terrible, but it's my least favorite from this group; it could've been better.

In this album, Boyz II Men has created the perfect blend of upbeat dance songs and songs with a more hardcore vibe with some of the best harmonies and ballads to date. Songs like AIN'T A THANG WRONG, WHATCHA NEED, ROLL WIT ME, ON THE ROAD AGAIN, and I'M OKAY, YOU'RE OKAY, light up the album with the hard baselines, great arrangements, and solid lyrics. All this, coupled with COLOR OF LOVE, an anthem of a hope for peace to the world, in a classic Boyz II Men style, and songs like MAKIN' LOVE, THAT'S WHY I LOVE YOU, LUV N U. And my personal favorite, due to its rich harmonies and deep meaning, I'LL SHOW YOU. I feel that this is their best work ever and, as the previous album title EVOLUTION suggests, they'll only get better, even with the exit of Michael "Bass" McCary from the group. Yes, sadly enough, it's true...

One more thing: Boyz II Men, as individuals and as a group, need to become better marketers. Just before the release of the FULL CIRCLE album, the group appeared on TV (BET) and Shawn Stockman called it "a pretty good album". I dropped my head in shame. Michael McCary then called it, "the best album we've ever made". Shawn Stockman's reply was: "...Okay", as if he didn't believe it was, which means he felt like he settled for less than the best. I could've punched a hole in the TV set. SELL THE ALBUM! YOU CAN'T DO THAT IF YOU SOUND LESS THAN TOTALLY HAPPY AND ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT IT! People will pick up on that and you'll lose record sales because of it! Why would anybody buy your album if even you don't like it?

Regardless, after reviewing this album for myself, I've come to the conclusion that this is a great work of art and I will buy every Boyz II Men album that comes out. This is how I feel about Boyz II Men:

"...I bought 2 copies, cuz other than that, all y'all other dudes is sloppy!"

-Jin (Learn Chinese), Rough Ryders, freestyle in the booth with Big Tigger on BET.

Be on the lookout for the upcoming album from Boyz II Men entitled THROWBACK, in stores August 24, 2004!

4 out of 5 stars The end of the road.......2004-03-21

Boyz II Men - Full Circle (Arista, 2002)

Boyz II Men's Arista debut, Full Circle, proves just how fickle and forgetful the average R&B fan can be. A great return to form for the guys, there are great songs aplenty like "Oh Well", "That's Why I Love You" (both produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) and "The Color of Love" (produced by Babyface). But the music world shifted by then; even fans of their previous album, the unfocused Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya, ignored this project and went to see what newer jacks like Dru Hill and B2K were up to. Plus, without proper promotion by executive producer LA Reid, the album flopped and the Boyz became another legendary act on Arista that became old-hat that year, along with Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, and TLC (the lack of promotion for all four acts would lead to Reid's dismissal). Now the only way Boyz II Men can stay relevant in today's Beyoncé/Alicia Keys/Ludacris urban world is if someone releases another greatest-hits compilation on them. But they're still legends in my book. -EJR

4 out of 5 stars Get This One.......2003-12-24

Another solid effort by Boyz II Men. I'd rank this one right behind "II" and right before "Cooleyhighharmony." "Oh Well" is such a beautiful ballad, it tugs at my heart strings. "Luv N U" and "That's Why I Love You" are nice slow jams, as well. "Howz About It", "Ain't A Thang Wrong" and "Roll Wit Me" are nice head-bobbers. This CD is a nice mix of ballads and up-tempo tracks.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Talented young group of musicians.......2006-12-27

I took a chance on this CD after seeing the trumpet player Troy Andrews on television (studio 60) and wanting to hear more...I was not disappointed.

In places on this enjoyable CD the youth of this group shows - in some ways this makes for a raw, fresh sound. In others it simply reminds you that these young men have years ahead of them to hone their craft. In places the CD really takes off though, most notably on the third track, "get down", a hard driving tuba-bass heavy funkified jam that will have you dancing around in your living room in your boxers, hoping the neighbors aren't looking in your windows. This track was worth the price of admission alone.

I love the blend of styles, though it doesn't work as well for some of the tracks as others. Still, there's plenty of good music on this CD, and I'm glad to have supported these players with my purchase. I almost with the entire CD was funk, as that is what these guys seem to do best. Echoes of Tower of Power shine through in places - they all seem to play more confident on the funk tracks.

I gave it 4 stars, but 3.5 seems a bit more appropriate. No insult to the group at all - the music is excellent, but production quality is not entirely consistent, and in places it comes off as a bit raw. Where it works though, it really works - track 7 is a terrific funky horn-based jam and they're really in the pocket throughout. Likewise with the aforementioned "get down" (track 3), and track 8 is another bright spot on the CD.

I look forward to hearing what these guys do with their bright musical futures. If you're a fan of upbeat funky music with a tight horn section and subtle hammond organ throughout you will probably enjoy this CD.

  30. Mark's Keyboard Repair

Amazon.com

Mark Ramos Nishita has a riff or two for every season, which makes Mark's Keyboard Repair, his 30-song, 63-minute solo debut, stocked with enough organ-fueled flavor to get us through at least the next couple decades. Taking time off from his day job as the fourth Beastie Boy, keyman Money Mark has been hanging down in the basement, surrounded by his well-worn and strictly analog Moog, Fender Rhodes, D6 Clavinet, and Hammond organ--and even an old yardsale guitar--setting new standards for the art of noodling. Keyboard Repair is a lo-fi feast of hot licks that conjures Herbie Hancock, Bernie Worrell, Billy Preston, Augustus Pablo, and Gil Scott Heron in an ultraloose swirl that includes nods to '60s breeze pop and acid rock, 70s porn funk and R&B, Santana's Latin groove, art rock, ska, Beasties' hip-hop, and enough action-packed instrumentals to rewrite the theme songs of every cheesy detective show that ever aired. --Roni Sarig

3 out of 5 stars beasties producer goes solo.......2007-05-06

money marks first solo record is filled with quick little 70's inspired nuggets... you can definately hear what the beastie boys did when they hired him to produce their cd... this raw record comes at you quick, and when your done you left thinkin... "was that ingenious or was that toooo easy?" moey mark makes very simple music in a way thats so infectious it can only be labeled as a guilty pleasure... those who bought his first record on brushfire and are lookin for the same will be dissapointed, untill you realize that this is just as good, but in a completely different way...

5 out of 5 stars "Keyboard" needs no repair.......2005-02-10

When he's not the fourth Beastie Boy, Mark Ramos Nishita creates some wicked solo music as Money Mark -- lo-fi, funky, fuzzy, and entrancingly spacey. How to describe it? A colorful, twisted rollercoaster ride through a Hammond organ and Moog, as Money Mark explores every experimental nook and cranny.

It opens with the slow-grinding, chunky "Pretty Pain," before lifting off to mixtures of soul-jazz and funk, done against a blippy backdrop of thick, dense organ and blippy keyboard. Most of the songs are two-ish minutes or under, but somehow that seems just right -- if they were any longer, they would seem stretched out.

And Money Mark also augments the music with jam sessions, bells, thick distortion over droned vocals, lessons on entomology, and sputtering electric organ. It's impossible to describe every facet of Money Mark's sound; it's far too complex, but that complexity never bogs it down. It trips merrily in its colorful trappings, rarely slowing down.

Few albums really mesmerize, never boring listeners with a single song. Thankfully, Money Mark achieved that in "Mark's Keyboard Repair" -- not one song, be it pretty or gritty, gets dull. There's a feeling of delighted anticipation throughout the album -- what will he pull out of his hat next? Acid jazz, or funky electronica? Distortion or organ? Sparkles or sputters?

Since all these songs were originally released as a series of EPs, there really isn't any internal flow. But it feels like there is. There's nothing to link the songs directly, but Money Mark's distinct musical style and unique electro-jazz sound seems to band them together.

Nishita's vocals feature in quite a few songs, but aren't the centerpiece of those songs. Instead, he uses his flat intonations like another instrument, blending them perfectly with his expert use of electric organ and moog, mixed in with basic acoustic jazz. Best of all, he both layers the two sounds over one another, then alternates them -- it never gets dull or simplistic.

Money Mark created a truly unique collection with "Mark's Keyboard Repair." A heady mix of electronica, jazz, funk and experimental twiddles, this is a minor masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Flava-filled, funky, delightfully old-skool............2003-08-28

One of my favorite CD's in my collection!!! The vibe of this album has a very analog, organic, old-skool (for want of a better term), and sometimes mellow feel, it's just the disc to listen to with your mahogany console stereo (if you've got the rare UK vinyl pressing of this album) in your den with the red shag carpet & knotty pine paneling, with the naugahyde chairs, lava lamp, and sunburst clock!! :)

My favorite track on the album has to be "Pinto's New Car", with a lot of flavaful groove that leaves plenty left over for the rest of songs on the album.

I also read somewhere that Money Mark recorded these songs long before he met the Beasties when they were recording Paul's Boutique in '89 (and became the 4th beastie boy soon after) to fix a entry gate to their driveway at the mansion that the B-Boys were recording at in Silverlake in LA (Mark is a carpenter by trade as well), so I'm assuming some of these songs on this album are probably around 15-20 years old! All the better... :-)

All of these songs were independently released by Mark on a series of EPs on his own Pinto Records label a while before this album came out, which is a re-issue of these EPs all combined together.

Once again, this is a disc I *highly* recommend...

How do you describe "Keyboard Repair?" Umm...

...uhh...

...hmm...

Okay, I got it. Hard to pin down, but lots of fun to listen to. A lo-fi sonic adventure. Definitely one of those CDs friends will ask you about.

4 out of 5 stars Great instrumental jam.......2000-06-06

The songs are too short, the organ a little overpowering, but overall, a timeless disc that stays in my CD changer

Even if you've followed the Hiero's decade-plus career, it sometimes helps to have a scorecard to parse out each member. On their latest family album, Full Circle, it's Pep Love who puts in the best work--his flow bobbing and weaving with a boxer's grace. In contrast to Casual's thunderous presence, Pep strikes like lightning and the two complement each other well on the thoughtful "Make Your Move." Souls' member Opio also stands out, especially on "Heatish" where he sprints off with outrageous lines like, "they know my skills/fire swept through your dialect/like the Oakland Hills." No song on Full Circle seems to offer the same crew combinations twice and the Hiero's longevity manifests in their enviable chemistry with one another. Though the disc offers few new surprises it still packs in a satisfying, 16-track serving of Hiero's quick-witted, quick-spitted lyricism and funk-fried beats. --Oliver Wang

4 out of 5 stars This Group Came Full Circle!!! (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-02-05

This is one of those albums that I find truly refreshing to listen to, especially when I'm on a train ride to work. Hieroglyphics' second album as a group "Full Circle" is an excellent LP follow up to their classic 1998 album "Third Eye Vision". 5 years later, they drop this album with some of the most excellent production that I've heard in a minute. Also with this album, ALL members lyrical skills have improved to another level.

I think the person who stood out the most on this album was Pep Love while Opio comes in a close second. He amazed me on the second track "Fantasy Island". As one of the spotlight reviewers said, most of the lesser known members get a chance to make an impact while popular artists like Del Tha Funkee Homosapien doesn't so often (not saying hes wack or anything, but he just not all over this album). I believe that disapointed a lot of fans not hearing him as much as they wanted to, but shouldn't knock this album because of that. There are many dope cuts here to listen to, like "Powers That Be", "Halo", and "Maggie May". "7 Sixes" is the final track that ends on a good note as each member spits 6 lines (Del is amazing, beginning every word with the letter "V" of all letter in his verse. How unique is that?), making it another stand out.

What really make me like this album is that I hear that the Hiero Crew sounding like they are doing what they love. Making good quality music, and pleasing their fans. Especially during shows, where you can hear some recording of them on this album. Even the Souls Of Mischief drop a song about getting ready to do a show, on the song "Chicago" about pleasing their fan base on that song. To me, that is how you do it.

There are some low points here though. Some of the tracks like "Shift Shape" suffer from an awkward hook. "Jingle Jangle" is another song that falls into that category. Some of the group's energy is unbalanced throughout portions of the album, but a listener might not notice it. Other than that this is one album that can be appreciated to be an addition to your hip hop collection.

Hieroglyphics are doing their own thing now. No longer signed to Jive and Elektra, the have the power to do anything they want, with out no higher up label execs giving them the red light. If you are new to Hieroglyphics, I recommend that you buy "Third Eye Vision" or maybe some of the members solo albums, before you listen to this. That way, you can hear how improved this group is and how they are in control of their own destiny. This ain't your average rap group people.

5 out of 5 stars intelligent hip hop at its ultra finest.......2006-07-25

There are a butt load of emcees and crews littering the world with their rhymes and swagger, but therer are only a few that really shine, and then again only a select few that provide and deliver true intelligent and witty and tight lyrics. Heiroglyphics is one of those few that provide expert lyricism and witty lyrics to the masses while stayin underground and true to themselves. The heiro crew is huge and I won't go into naming every member, but I do highly recommend this album to everyone. Especially heads into intelligent and tight lyrics. Qirky medaphors and smart wordplay asassinate over tight beats and production. A few of the choruses on the album are forgettable, but this is a must own. Much, much better than 3rd eye vision. Featuring some of the most abled emcees in the biz, Heiro is a crew that is in the top ten of hip hop. Every track is worth listening to and each member spits lyrics with precision and dead aim, lyrics that will have you reciting them over and over.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best from the Hiero Crew.......2006-03-18

When I first bought this CD back in '03 I was thinking to myself that this could not be a good Lp because everything that comes out these days (hiphop/rap wise) sux! But I took a chance and I picked it up, and I was not dissapointed at all. This CD will keep your head bobing up and down throughout. These guys really know how to make music. After hearing this CD I have become a very big hiero fan and probably will continue to be for a long time. This CD really is great and deserves alot more attention then it actually got. Third eye vision is also good, but if I have to compare them I would say this Lp is better. Halo is my favorite track, I love the beat on this track. All of the tracks are good in their own way. Worst track is jingle jangle. Kinda pointless and boring. Whenever I listen to this CD now it reminds me of the summer of '03 when I graduated high school and first bought this CD, which brings back good memories. This CD will always be in my top 20 of all time, and I don't say that about many Lps.

Hieroglyphics, A group of rappers all hailing from West Coast Cali, in Oaktown. This Cd is the ish. All 8 rappers stand out on this Cd and make a name for themselves busting out weed smokin rhymes. This is one of my favorite CD's of all time. Even Dan the automater steps in and delivers some pure punchlines. If i Could i would give this CD a 10/5 cuz this will be bumpin in my truck for awhile.

I was one of the priveleged peopled able to hear this album late 1977 when it originally came out.It was bad then it's bad now.Mr. Whitfield, this is the kind of album you shoulda been making the Tempts in the early 70's instead of half baked albums like "1990" and "Masterpiece".There isn't a weak song on this album.Rose Royce were a BAND meaning they could get away with eight and a half minute jams like "It Makes You Feel Like Dancing" & "Do Your Dance".The Tempts were a VOCAL GROUP.Nuff said on that.If you have only Rose Royce album in your collection (and if you listen to funk then you need at least one)this is the one.

The mother of them all. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force's "I Wonder If I Take You Home" is often cited, along with Shannon's "Let the Music Play" and Jellybean's "The Mexican," as one of the first freestyle tracks to gain recognition. Ms. Lisa's winsome bleat is the perfect expression of the hard teenage realities she faces in the song, which is a more lyrically graphic update of the sturdy themes in "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" Meanwhile the melody (such that it is) and the beats goose the track into a giddy, cosmopolitan distillation of urban youth. The huge single "All Cried Out" follows up on "I Wonder If I Take You Home": she did take him home, and lived to regret it. Also contains the essential early freestyle smash, "Can You Feel the Beat." --John Sanchez

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Soul Is Created.......2005-09-11

Historical landmark achievement. Full Force created a new genre of music, Hip Hop Soul. This blueprint was copied by countless artists including Miche'lle and Mary J Blige. Full Force needs to get the credit they deserve.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Freestyle.......2003-09-01

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's debut is a freestyle classic. With each song a extension of the other, all leading to a complete finish. "I wonder if i take you home" is their well known classic. A listen to "Behind my eyes", "You'll never Change", and "Private Property" and you'll realize each of those cuts are just as good. The whole album is consistent. The ballad "All cried out" with FULL FORCE is essential. A song to note as well is the dance hit "Can you feel the beat?". FULL FORCE produced this effort and it is one anyone interested in 80's r&b and freestyle should have. A winner!

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam.......2003-08-19

This trios music along with Full Force takes me back to 1984. My early years in the Marine Corps. My friends and I were hitting the enlisted clubs (at) Camp Lejuene in North Carolina. They were the bomb then and I still (jump to) their music in the car today. I'm hoping that they get together and make a new album CD. I know that they can keep up with the groups of today. They were ahead of their time.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC DANCE NEW YORK STYLE!!!!!!.......2002-02-16

LISA LISA.......LISA LISA'S MUSIC TAKES ME BACK TO THE GLORY DAYS OF DANCE MUSIC,HER STRONG VOICE WITH THE GREAT DANCE CUTS MAKE A GREAT COMBINATION. I CAN STILL REMEMBER GOING TO THE DISCO BACK IN 1984 AND DANCING TO "CAN YOU FEEL THE BEAT", "TAKE ME HOME", AND OF COURSE MY FAVORITE "I WONDER IF YOU TAKE ME HOME", THIS SONG REALLY BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE BACK IN THE 80'S. TODAY WHEN I HEAR IT BRINGS BACK VERY FOND MEMORIES. BUY THIS CD AND KEEP IT IN THE ARCHIVES, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Landmark Freestyle Album.......2001-01-03

Before starring on the new Nickelodeon-network children's series, "Taina" (she plays the title character's mother), a young girl by the name of Lisa Velez was transforming the music scene inside out. Going by her stage name, Lisa Lisa, she teamed up with two other local musicians to form one of the 1980's most famous trios. Shattering the mold of pretty white kids singing pop, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam showed the world that three Latino kids growing up in one of New York City's tough neighborhoods, Hell's Kitchen, can make memorable dance music.

Partnered with the talented songwriting/singing group Full Force, Lisa Lisa, scored hit after hit with such songs as "All Cried Out" and "Lost in Emotion." On their debut album, they rocked the dance world with their very own brand of freestyle music.

Freestyle, a musical style popularized by young Puerto Ricans living in New York, would capture the world by storm in the upcoming years as many artists and groups such as Lissette Melendez, George Lamond, Expose, and Safire became well-known names on radios and music video shows throughout the United States.

On this debut album, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam hits us with three memorable songs: The hit "I Wonder If I Take You Home"; the love ballad "All Cried Out"; and the dance-hit "Can You Feel The Beat?". Their first hit, "I Wonder If I Take You Home" sealed their fame as one of the 1980's most memorable songs due to it's catchy beats and lyrics. "All Cried Out," a slow, yet soulful ballad was one of the first freestyle-love songs out there and it paved the way for more such songs (e.g., Brenda K. Starr's "I Still Believe"). "Can You Feel the Beat?" is a lengthy, fast-rhytmn song that made waves throughout all of the major clubs in New York and Miami. While the other songs are good, these three songs stand out as the top songs on this landmark album.

If you are an 80's-phile and need a dose of freestyle music in your musical diet, then add this album to your shopping cart. While no longer together, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam will forever be pioneers in the emergence of Latino artists in the English-language market.

The most complete album the O'JAYS did. Just about every song is classic. Man O Man, when I heard 'Cry Together" it set it all off for me. And I don't care if I don't understand the message of "Brandy', still love the song. So, O'JAYS, Take Me To The Stars, so I can Sing My Heart Out.

4 out of 5 stars Late-'70's disc is message-free.......2004-10-17

On "So Full of Love," the O'Jays stopped the "message" songs that characterized their previous Philadelphia International albums. David Nathan's liner notes quote the group's Eddie Levert as having said that people didn't want to hear messages anymore.

However unfortunate, that opinion follows the overused adjective for late-'70's music as "hedonistic" (I've read that word in music writing everywhere). It also worked, as "So Full of Love" became the O'Jays' highest-charting album ever, reaching #6 in the summer of '78 (not 1979 as shown on the back cover and booklet).

The eight tracks alternate between slow and fast. The latter include the disc's only big pop hit, the wonderful "Use Ta Be My Girl." A little doo-wop, a little disco, it's one of my favorite O'Jays songs. The version of "This Time Baby" here is very good, but doesn't quite reach the intoxicating disco heights Jackie Moore took it to the following year. For me, "Strokety Stroke" (what do you think this song is about?) is too tacky for a group of the O'Jays' stature, but other reviewers seem able to get past that and feel its considerable funk. "Take Me To the Stars" (the next lyric is "and let me be your space station") could only have happened at the peak of Earth, Wind, & Fire and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." I wonder what the kids of today's hip-hop-dominated R&B world would think of it.

All the slow ones are fine, with the standout being the R&B hit "Brandy." I can't tell if Brandy is a girlfriend, baby girl, or a pet. She was left on a doorstep in the rain, she's his best friend, he loves her, she ran away, he's a fraction of a man without her. But how would a grown woman get left on his doorstep? If it's a baby girl, there's nothing about how old she got when she ran away. Regrettably, I'm reminded of Henry Gross' miserable song "Shannon," also apparently about a missing dog, which made the top 10 a couple of years before this. That song really really upsets me. I'd appreciate anyone persuading me that this is not another lost-dog song. Anyway, for now, this remains one of pop's (lesser) unsolved mysteries.

Did this review run off the rails or what? I meant for it to be concise! Anyway, I recommend this record.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Album.......2002-05-04

The O'Jays are slammin' with this track. The cuts of Use to be my girl, brandy, and this time baby are only a reflection of the entire album. Buy it!
