Customer Reviews:
IT'S THE CHRISTMAS SEASON WITH J.S.......2006-03-20
In this 5th installment (Actually Volume 14) of the Gardiner Bach Pilgrimage, it is the Christmas Season to be celebrated with Johann. In this 1-disc installment, we hear cantatas written by J.S. Bach for Christmas time. These Cantatas have always been out-performed by the "Christmas Oratorio".. What's the reason for that, I will never know. The cantatas contained in Volume 14 find dear Johann at his very BEST; they are filled with hope, joy (dare I say) and bounce reflective of the season. All of the aforesaid descriptions are very evident especially in the cantata "Unser Mund sei voll Lachens" BWV 110. As I've noted profusely in my previous reviews, on this board, of the other four installments, I find this enterprise of Gardiner to be outstanding in every way. He along with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloist perform Bach's cantatas gloriously. Volume 14 is no exception; it contains some beautiful music. This volume was recorded in New York and all of the participants perform magnificently! The Tenor and Bass have the most solos to perform and they are astounding.
Once again, James Gilchrist, the tenor is astounding-listen to his arias in Tracts 3, 8 and 22-wow! Peter Harvey, the bass is very good also-listen to tracts 10 and 16-they are wonderful! The sopranos, Katharine Fuge and Joanne Lunn singing their duets with the tenor and alto beautifully-those duets are simply fantastic. Just in case you've read my reviews of the other releases in this series, I am still very much enjoying countertenors Robin Tyson and William Towers-they are really very good. In fact, I loved this release!
Although, I listened to this recording about three months after the holidays, it succeeded in putting me in a rather festive mood. If you want to hear some J.S. Bach in his substantial glory, buy this album of his Cantatas. (do read the previous reviewer's magnificent summary of the contents pf Volume14.) By the way, the New York audiance must have been very healthy too; I heard not one sneeze or cough out of them--in the dead of winter too--i wonder what's their secret?
Cantatas on disc by BWV # & name........2006-01-12
This is not a review but merely a helper for potential buyers whom recognize Bach's cantatas by BWV # with the name. This disc (the first issue of a single disc) is the continuation of Gardiner's "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage." The CD is produced with utmost quality in sound, however it is packaged in an awkward cardboard case.
The cantatas on this set by BWV # and Name:
BWV 91, Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ
BWV 121, Christum wir sollen loben schon
BWV 40, Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes
BWV 110, Unser Mund sei voll Lachens
Happy listening!

The Best Brass Wedding Album.......2003-09-03
The performances are solid & clean, and the arrangements are perfect. But the group doesn't even have a name, so the question is, where can we get the sheet music for these arrangements? They're the most useful I've heard.

Customer Reviews:
The pilgrimage continues.......2006-01-26
Obviously I've, joined (by purchasing the recordings) John E. Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage and I'm most certainly enjoying the journey. As I have expressed on this board regarding the two previous sets of this series, I'm enthralled in every way with these recordings. This third release (actually Volume 24) is no exception. Simply put, John Elliott Gardiner and his forces therein are stupendous in every way. It is extremely evident that Gardiner has worked very diligently in presenting these works. The results are superb. I own other "complete sets" of the cantatas; however, this new set, so far, really touches my very soul in ways that the other recordings have yet to do. Gardiner's approach has made me, keenly aware, once again, of the cantatas' rich musical beauties--I truly feel that they find dear ole Johann at his very best! As I've expressed in my reviews of the first two volumes, I don't look for religious edification from these works because really my main goal is to simply hear and enjoy Bach's musical genius in all its glory. Indeed these recordings exhibit in an extraordinary way Bach's compositional genius. (He certainly knew his "way around a choir loft!" composing some extraordinarily great music for same!) The choir, orchestra and the soloist in these recordings are outstanding! This Volume (24) certainly contains vast amounts of Johann Sebastian's glorious music exhibiting large amounts of beautiful music performed by all involved exquisitely. Just listen to the beginning of `Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" GORGEOUS! Disc one of Volume 24 finds Bach at his darkest, most sorrowful and most intense whereas, Disc two finds him at his most hopeful. Those moods are delivered by Gardiner and his forces splendidly. I must now praise especially some of the soloist in this Volume 24.
I've notated on this board that I usually don't have too much of an appreciation or tolerance for the countertenor voice (o.k., "man your battle stations authenticity police"). However, Countertenors Robin Tyson and William Towers, in this recording, display very fine and easy on the (my) ear voices with nary a hoot in evidence. The other soloists are splendid too negotiating Bach's tricky vocal writing wonderfully, easily and tunefully displaying rich and full but flexible voices able to sing the ornamentation accurately and beautifully.
The tenor soloist (Mark Padmore and James Gilchrist) are stupendous possessing beautiful flexible and when needed heroic voices!
The orchestra and chorus are splendid also. The "original" instruments are played extremely well plus the chorus is (thank god) free of unchanged pubescent boys' voices using very young (boyish??) sounding women's voices very well; however they are indeed able to render Bach's vocal demands effortlessly.
The recording is great exhibiting a clear and warm sound. Although taped in front of an audience, I was not aware of that fact-I heard not a peep from the people in attendance (obviously the audience was extremely healthy with no colds or influenza. (Not a cough or sneeze to be heard!) The CDs are enclosed in a very informative booklet with loads of in depth notes by Gardiner himself outlining the background of the recordings and his thoughts on performing Bach's cantatas plus the history of the cantatas in Volume 24.
If you want to hear some really glorious Bach performed masterfully, buy this edition of Gardiner's pilgrimage.
Note: The highlight, for me, of Volume 24 is the Sinfonia in Tract 14 of the 1st disc. Bach used this in one of his harpsichord concertos except here we have an organ instead of the harpsichord. The organist and Gardiner's forces give it a wonderfully fearce reading (The organist is "on fire" I bet smoke was coming out of the pipes)--it's just good I was not in the audiance when this was recorded because I might have been inclined to stand up at the end of this sinfonia and shout Bravo! The audience would no doubt have thrown objects at me. It really is an exciting performance!!
(for details of what's contained in Volume 24 go to the previous reviewer-he has done a superlative job of listing the contents therein)
Cantatas on Discs........2005-11-13
This really isn't a review but more of a helper for potential buyers. Included is a list of the cantatas contained on this set (since Amazon.com only lists them by their name and not BWV #).
The recording is Gardiner's usual high quality, meticulous work. You will not be disappointed with the sound (however, personally, I think Gardiner takes the trumpet pieces a smidge too fast).
Cantatas contained on this set:
Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12

Reverence Beyond Technical Virtuosity.......2000-03-21
Scholar in theology and philosopy, organist and author of a still influential study on J.S.Bach and his music, Schweitzer approached a near-mystic perception of his subject's intended message. Especially in the "Liebster Jesu Wir Sind Hier" we hear a reverence beyond technical virtuosity; Schweitzer's tempo reflects meditation on words unspoken, yet musically understood. The flash and wizardry of other interpretations cheapen in proximity to this CD's brilliant simplicity. Here is Bach as Bach intended; here, too, we feel Schweitzer's living compassion and purpose. Buy this CD - it speaks.

Customer Reviews:
Great Variety.......2007-01-10
This CD is a good example of German martial music. It has great variety.Hopefully it will lead to reoleases of more albums of marches, from the mid 1850's thru the early twentieth century and would include Austian offerings as well. The Imperial Band would be wonderful.
Title is a bit misleading.......2006-09-24
I was very pleased with the original volume of German Military Marches. There were some differing opinions, in regards to the sound quality of that cd, but nothing that took away from the selections.
As the name of this title "More German Military Marches & Polkas Vol.II" suggests, this cd would be a addendum to the previous volume. This is not the case for this cd, as it is a completely different selection of tracks and genre.
I am not a military marches expert, but I do have a collection and an idea of what I expect from a cd entitled Military Marches & Polkas. This recent volume is primarily a collection of bland polkas. Maybe a Polka fan would like this volume, but if you are looking for good military marches, as found on the original cd, look elsewhere.
An Excellent Presentation.......2006-03-17
As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for good CD's of music suitable for Oktoberfest celebrations. This CD definitely fills the bill. The musicians and their conductor are thoroughly professional and do an outstanding job--which, to be sure, is what one would expect from the German Air Force Band. The blend and balance between instruments is excellent. With the exception of "Deutschland Ueber Alles," the songs are mostly light-hearted, breezy arrangements that are executed with military precision. At the same time, they are very much in the traditional Oktoberfest oom-pah band mood and spirit. An interesting and pleasing combination! With the exception of "Deutschland Ueber Alles," which sounds slightly distorted, the sound quality is superb. I highly recommend this CD!
German Band Music --- "Beer Garden" Style.......2004-07-11
If you're looking for heavy full-range German march music, this is probably not the album for you. Also, the recording quality is a bit tinny here and there, especially in the recording of the "Deutschland Lied." As my heading implies, the perfomance style is much lighter and is more like what you'd hear at a local Oktoberfest beer garden. The music is, on the whole, still enjoyable and the vocals are also on the light side. Back in the late 1950s through the early 1990s, the radio station KTYM broadcast German music programs on Saturdays and Sundays hosted by Fred Schell and Peter Teichmann. On their programs, they played music that sounded much like what you'll hear on this CD. While I don't think of this music as something you'd march to, it is the kind you'd relax to while sipping from your bierkrug and enjoying a Thueringer bratwurst or Muenchner wiesswurst and a side of sauerkraut with friends. On Sundays when I was a kid, my dad would barbeque on the porch. We kids would play in the yard while his German friends would sit in the shade enjoying their beer and listening to this music played on the portable stereo set my dad brought outside on a LONG extension cord. I'm still in the habit of listening to this music on weekends. It still brings back some nice memories.
While the recording quality is wanting here and there, I think you'll find this collection of traditional German music relaxing and pleasing. You would do well to puchase this album used on Amazon, as I did. And, for those of you who understand German: "In der Not schmeckt das Wurst gut ohne Brot!"

Wow!!! The Good Humored Ladies!.......2006-08-03
The 'Good Humored Ladies' written by Scarlatti is recorded by the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Louis Lane. This recording alone is a good reason to add this CD to your collection. It was issued many years ago and finally re-released again.
Other music on the CD is also high quality sound and very relaxing.
An addition to the music includes recipes inside the paper cover.

Buxtehude & Bryndorf.......2004-06-22
Adds up to an unequalled combination. Sound is marvellous, clean and crisp, and Bine Bryndorf a performer with a due restraint that plays to this music's advantage. The music is never thick, and is almost without exception engaging to one's ear and to the senses. If you are an organist, the detailing of the instrument's registrations (the Johan Lorentz at St. Mary's Church) should delight as greatly as the music itself. Listening to this quite makes one understand why Mr Bach chose to hike for hours and hours just to hear old Buxtehude play.

The Art of Virgil Fox Vol. 2.......2007-04-01
I find the recording quality of this CD to be very good. As a child I had the opportunity to meet the organist Virgil Fox through my mother, who was a friend and colleague of his (she was the soprano soloist at the Riverside Church where he was organist - the Riverside Church is also the place where the recordings were made). I also heard Mr. Fox live and found him to be a first-class artist. I can recommend the CD without reservation. Alexander Stevenson
!.......2003-11-19
This CD is just a small sample of the greatness of Virgil Fox. However, it is a must-have. It demonstrates the breadth of works which Fox mastered and in the more sentimental songs, those which he beautifully interpreted during his illustrious career; and these recordings at Riverside Church are an indispensable part of his legacy. The program starts with the majestic "We All Believe in one God", where we hear the control of dynamics and unique way Fox played Bach. Vaughn-Williams' work is an interesting fantasia on the familiar religious tune. The highlight of the CD is the Perpetuum Mobile. A favorite concert piece of Fox, it is an amazing flurry of notes, showing his amazing mastery of the pedalboard, and building to a tremendous crescendo and brilliant arpeggio. Giga is a rapid, merry piece which romps along in the manuals. Tracks 1-4 are the virtuoso organ pieces. Starting with Love's Old Sweet Song, # 5-13, the great interpretations of transcriptions, songs, and sentimental American pieces begin. The piano work Kamenoi Ostrow is a great transcription. A Dream and Calm as the Night are beautiful songs which are beautifully styled on the organ. In short, buy this CD - it is a musical and masterful recording.

Album Description
The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with the Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach's most impressive opus. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world, with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Begun in 1994, this series was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. The series will continue to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach. Each set includes a thick, informative booklet. The cantatas of volume 19 can be divided into three groups. Four works (BWV 72, 88, 129 and 193) belong to the third Leipzig series, lasting from 1725 to 1727; five (BWV 145, 159, 171, 174 and 188) belong to the group known as the Picander cycle of 1728-29, which was not completed or has not survived complete; two works (BWV 51 and 117) belong to the period after 1730, in which Bach composed new church cantatas only sporadically. His first five years as Thomaskantor cost Johann Sebastian Bach unusual effort, as he had undertaken composing church cantatas appointed for each Sunday more or less by himself. He was not contractually obliged to do so, but he adhered quite strictly to this plan at least for two years and loosened it a little for the thrid yearly cycle! , which was spread over two or three years. Even so, Bach never got stuck in a routine, as he was constantly discovering new facets of the canata genre.

Customer Reviews:
Not for conservative Bach fans, to be sure..........2007-04-09
The first thing you'll notice after you get this collection, or perhaps even before you get it if you've actually looked at the track listings here, is that this certainly isn't the Well-Tempered Clavier played on the organ. "24 Preludes and Fugues, Vol. 1"? I don't think so, Tim. Must've been some kind of labeling misprint at the factory. What it is, is a hodge-podge of organ music from the Baroque master played in a most unconventional manner.
I'll be honest, when I first got this collection over a decade ago, I felt like throwing it into the garbage after the first hearing. It sounded as if these great masterpieces of music were being played by a drunken baboon. I bought it because I wanted to hear Bach, not Anthony Newman's...let us say, unique...attempt at dazzling the listner with his uniqueness. This collection is not, I repeat, NOT for those who are looking for the Bach that they know and love.
That being said, I'm glad I didn't toss it out. There are few pieces on these two discs that, unconventional though they may be, are really good in their own way. The Toccata, Adagio, & Fugue, Toccata and Fugue in F, Prelude & Fugue in Fm, and the "St. Anne" Prelude & Fugue are all among my favorite versions of those works I have yet heard. Newman's unique approach does seem to breathe life into these works in such a way as to make them a one-of-a-kind sonic experience. Other than the works I mentioned, though, my original impression stayed with me. Newman generally just plays to fast, to choppy, for me to truly enjoy.
When all is said and done, if you give this one a chance, and take the time to sift through the hyperactive, muddled interpretations, and Mr. Newman's presumptuous musical ego, you should be able to find some jewels in the dung heap, so to speak. As the saying goes: Buyer Beware!
Well, since this is a bargain-priced collection, it's probably worth your while to pick it up and give it a listen. Heck, who knows? You may end up agreeing with some of those here who rave about it.
Bach like you never heard it........2006-11-03
The people who gave this one star don't know what they're talking about. Anthony Newman takes Bach and cranks it up to Insane. I'm a huge fan of Bach and this is the most original interpretation i've heard. He creates out of his mind insane builds followed by an instant switch into a ghostly haunted church style whisper. If you want Back like you've never experienced it, grab this up.
Sabotaged by Technical Brilliance.......2006-09-16
Mr. Newman is an admirable technician whose manual and pedal virtuosity are truly extraordinary. Unfortunately, his dexterity gets in the way of the music. At these hyperkenetic speeds the effect is the aural equivalent of disco-era strobe lighting. Thank you, but I don't like it at all. I don't like dutiful plodding in Bach's organ works either, but the music needs a little breathing space for the granduer to make its effect. The chorale based preludes aren't badly done at all. It's a shame that some of the reflection exhibited in the chorale works didn't filter into the free compositions. Yes, the notes are all there, but the polyphony doesn't have time to register at these speeds. While I appreciate ornamentation in this music, it should add expression not the here-it-comes-again predictability we get in these run throughs. Mr. Newman also has a preference for garish, reedy registrations. All in all, the race to the finish line and the monotonous, blaring screech of the organ make for some unpleasant listening.
Simply terrible.......2004-03-28
Mr. Newman plays with the accuracy and passion of a machine. This recording is truly lifeless. At the very least, he plays way too fast as so the listeners ears are only assaulted briefly.
Newman is good, if a bit flamboyant.......2001-11-12
That's what our church organist (Ph.D., Eastman) said when I asked him about Newman, after I had bought and enjoyed the above recording. (I have heard so many BAD recordings of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor that I was relieved to hear it played sensibly on this wonderful CD.)
I'm sorry if one reviewer didn't like Newman's added notes; he should look up 'ornaments' in the Norton/Grove concise Encyclopedia of Music - or listen to contemporary soloists in Handel's Messiah for ornamentation in the spirit of the Baroque and classical eras.
Is the recording dry? Yes - but it's not muddy, as cathedral organ music is. Every week I sit five feet from a 22-stop tracker action organ built in the North German style and hear glorious music, often Bach, performed impeccably. Our church seats 300 and doesn't have cathedral acoustics - I still get a thrill from Bach, played well.
