Album Description

Off the back their extremely successful greatest hits album, Forever Faithless (1.2 million sales), Faithless release their new studio album, To All New Arrivals. A classic `the morning after the night before' album: melodic, but sonically pushes the boat out. And in true Faithless style, they're not afraid of experimenting, or to say what they think. It's a big, warm, passionate album. Faithless have teamed up with some amazing artists on this album (Cat Power, Robert Smith, One Eskimo, Dido), with the first single to be released from the album, Bombs featuring Harry Collier. This track is hugely confident and emotionally alive, lush and emotional with hard hitting brutally honest lyrics. BMG. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Speaking to the arrival of our time.......2007-05-16

I've been a fan of Faithless since Reverence, and this album fits right in line with their progretion as a band. It doesn't have the over-the-top loops Rollo has done for dance floor anthems, but it has some of the most beautiful and poignant songs for our time. The world is at war, babies are being born into a very uncertain future, and the music reflects this. I've come to know Faithless as artists who write songs about what's happening in their worlds -- and that becomes a part of my world.

4 out of 5 stars I like it- but the ravers/clubbers might not..........2007-05-11

I think there's 2 kinds of Faithless fans. The folks that love the dance stuff of theirs a lot and a bunch that like the other parts of their cd's. I'm the kind that usually isn't into their dancier songs. I think Sunday 8pm is the best and Outrospective/Reverence were pretty darn good also. I agree that I already miss Zoe's voice from the group & I always liked Dido's (kept to a song or 2). This cd is good if you like the more electronic, slower beats, side of Faithless but you may not like it as much if you like their dancier (if I can use that term again) tunes.

4 out of 5 stars eh.......2006-12-13

Ok, its time for me to put my 2 cents in on this cd. First off i'm the biggest Faithless fan outside the UK. I was so excited to see this was comming out and have to say it has let me down a bit. Thats not to say there are not stand out tracks cause there really are a few gems here, Bombs, Music Matters and Emergency are really juicey but what lies beyond that is really kinda flat. I wish Jamie and Zoe would come back and fill in the gaps. Ok, another thing, whats with the Cure song with Robert Smith, couldn't they think something new up, it sounds note for note like the orig., except for the brief maxi rap, it really does not fit in and you would think with someone like robert smith they could have come up with something really different. Ok and one more little pet pev, why when people have kids do they think the world is going to think they are just as cute as the parents do? Do we really want to hear some ones kid sceaming in the the mic....its far from charming and cute........I won't even comment on the kid pics on the sleeve. Ok, all that bitching aside, its great to have yet another cd from Faithless, its not their best but its far better then most of what is out there. So, if you are reading this thinking of buying this cd......get it, its def worth the money but also by outrospective, its the band at its best.
Ok, thats it and remember, be kind to animals, don't eat them!

5 out of 5 stars Seems to disappoint the Faithless fans, but..........2006-12-12

...to all new arrivals... that is to say, those who may not be so well acquainted with the band, perceptions of this new album may not be so gloomy. I have never owned, listened to, or previously purchased a Faithless record before, and have only been mildly acquainted with some of their major dance tracks of years past.

This album was purchased after I saw the amazing clip for 'Bombs'. Without knowledge of the prior recordings of this band - and having absolutely no desire to trawl through their back catalogue - I find this album fantastic. It is quite clear that Faithless are seasoned musicians. You can always tell!

And yet it's not overdone either. I particularly enjoy this album's subtlety, especially given its frequently forthright, running social and/or political commentary on some tracks. I often associate albums with 'messages' with heavier styles of music - angry records that scream angst, anger, and victimisation. What a difference it makes to wrap commentary within the confines of melodic, beautiful sounds. It actually delivers the message more effectively. It strikes the right balance. It also strikes me as the perfect record to listen to in the evening.

The perception I have gleaned by seasoned fans of Faithless seem to be that this album is a so-called 'musical departure' for the band, and consequently some sort of let down given much anticipation prior to its release. Yet at the same time, experimenting with new realms can merely serve to attract new fans and admirers. I would certainly count myself among that lot.

If you're a seasoned Faithless fan reading this, I could almost hear you saying something like "take a listen to their earlier stuff and see what you think then". Perhaps I will do just that. Yet I do not forsee their earlier records detracting from my interest and admiration of this album.

One cannot begrudge any artist's attempts to try new styles. If such so-called 'musical departures' serve to attract new fans to their fold, much less provide any degree of listening pleasure, then it has indeed, in my humble opinion, well and truly served its purpose.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing, to say the least........2006-12-09

Coming off the heels of what is my personal favorite Faithless CD, No Roots, To All New Arrivals is something of a disappointment.

It has some very sonically interesting moments, and there are definitely some standout tracks. The title track is a rather beautiful piece of dance music, similar in some ways to the sparse "We Come 1" from Outrospective, but without the big buildup and dancefloor stomper beat. The album is probably the most subdued and laid back of all of Faithless' material, which works both to its advantage and disadvantage.

It's nice to hear the band branch out. Despite their biggest hits being anthemic dance tracks, Faithless have never really been a one-trick pony. Some of their best material can be found in the slower, more melodic tracks of their sophomore effort, Sunday 8PM. To All New Arrivals is certainly no exception. Another one of the standout tracks is "I Hope", an endearing, if a bit cheesey, ode to the newborn children of two of the band's founding members, Rollo and Sister Bliss. The whole album is actually somewhat of a celebration of these births, even deriving its title from the event. Unfortunately, this permeates just about every vocal track on the album, making it a very linear record.

There are definitely some great moments, such as when the beat kicks in for the first time in "Spiders, Crocodiles, and Kryptonite", but the whole album lacks the musical cohesion that made No Roots such a strong effort. No Roots was clearly meant to be listened to as a whole and the lyrical depth stretched out into many different subjects as well, whereas here it stays planted mostly in verses about parenthood and childhood. Even the customary track featuring Rollo's sister, Dido, deals with the topic of a sickly child being born. Unfortunately, her vocals sound rather disinterested.

While it's not a horrible record, this is easily their weakest effort in my opinion. It's hard to not be somewhat disappointed when you consider their last record your favorite, as I do, but I didn't expect quite the drop off I got. If you're coming into this album looking for some classic dancefloor tracks or if you expect the same cohesion found on No Roots, and even Outrospective to a lesser degree, you will undoubtedly feel disappointed as well.

5 out of 5 stars Not for fans..........2006-04-20

If you don't have any Faithless albums then by all means get this before you spring for the full collection. It's a good sample of the wonder that is Faithless.

I have all their albums and an embarrassing number of singles, so I got this one in case any of the tracks were different. Sadly the only variation is that some of the tracks are shortened Radio Edits rather than the full track.

If you already have Reverence, Sunday 8pm, Outrospective and No Roots, then better spend the money on the "Why Go?" single import which has the brilliantly smooth Hoxton Whores remix.

5 out of 5 stars I continue to have faith in their ability to create great dance music.......2005-12-29

1997 was the year. "Insomnia" by Faithless had swept over the dance floor. The ensemble's unique echoic sound would last through their numerous albums, but always bringing in new elements to keep their musical proposal fresh. Unlike others that seem more meant to fulfill a contract, this Greatest Hits compilation does do them justice and presents the true best of their works. Almost nine years later, I hear the Monster Mix of "Insomnia" on this album, and it takes me back to the day. Definitely my faith in Faithless' ability to create great dance music is as strong today as ever.

5 out of 5 stars Good collection.......2005-06-01

For sure, I must recommend to buy all the original albums including remixes, but this is because I love Faithless.
If you are not a Faithless fan, but you like electronic music, you must have this album. This compilation is very well done, you get the best and buying it you'll not be disappointed.

If you're a fan of house music, this cd is a must have. I still have the originals on wax, but listening on cd is amazing, from the God father of house teaming up Jamie P, Marshall "move your body" Jefferson to the the Queen of State street Liz Torres. If you know house is not just a music , its a feeling , then treat yourself to the best, and bring down the walls.

4 out of 5 stars The Naked on "Zipless" .......2007-03-22

Vanessa Daou's voice on "Zipless" is sultry as an August day in Miami. The siren's sensuous and lazy vocals coupled with throbbing ambient music subtly overpower the senses. Listening to this potent mixture is addictive; the album begs to be replayed endlessly, which is delightful at first but then can quickly turn to something akin to Sisyphus' punishment of rolling that darn rock up a hill.

Lush electronica is played by husband Peter Daou, who also produced and arranged the album. The opening track of "The Long Tunnel of Wanting You" allures you into an orb of luxurious pleasures from the get go. "This is the long tunnel of wanting you./ Its walls are lined with remembered kisses/ wet and red as the inside of your mouth,/ full & juicy as your probing tongue." The poetic lyrics (taken from Erica Jong's 1991 poetry book, Becoming Light) merge perfectly with music and vocals that beckon reclining in the bedroom.

However, "Zipless" is more than a manifestation of cupid's wet dream. The album becomes darker in theme as it tackles topics like heartache, physical abuse, infidelity, and suicide. In "Dear Anne Sexton," "Live or die,/ you said insistently. You chose the second/ & the first chose me." In "Sunday Afternoons" Daou appears to take us back to the safe shores of a successful love relationship, "your arms ached for me,/ and your arms would close me in." But then she quietly drops the biting line of "though they smelled of other women."

Yes, love is often a messy thing and this album does not purport to clearly understand the heart, but has presented the vagaries of the heart's journey in an enticing manner. "Zipless" may make you want to give up this whole business of love as the protagonist thinks she can in "Becoming A Nun." "I think I can live without it--/ love with its pumping blood,/ sex with its messy hungers,/ men with their peacock strut."

However, the album does wane and lose its potency on the last two tracks. "Smoke" a poem about the effects of getting stoned is spoken by Jong. "Autumn Reprise" is an evocative instrumental that has Daou gently vocalizing as if unable to warm up enough to let the words completely out. These two oddballs are enjoyable, but "Smoke" is out of place, more at home on a spoken word recording while "Autumn Reprise" could have been deleted to make the album tighter and stronger thematically. Nonetheless, "Zipless" will awaken the coldest of hearts and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Whispered sensuality .......2006-08-31

Saying Vanessa Daou is like any other artist is an injustice to this work. The poetry of Erica Jong and the breathy vocals of Vanessa Daou is a sensually elaborate combination. The poetry is reminiscent of a Scorpio, yet Erica is an Aries, which the Aries aspect still comes across very strongly. I use "breathy" to describe Vanessa's vocals; they are not powerfully sung from the diaphragm, but almost whispered in your ear. The vocals come through clearly though, thanks to good production. The instrumentation is not what I typically go for but it compliments the vocals and lyrics well and has helped me to appreciate the style.
Within 2 hours of receiving this CD I started tracking down more of Vanessa's work, I have acquired "Make you love" and "Slow to burn." My Favorite is Zipless, then Make you love, then Slow to burn.
All together well written, sung, and produced. I give this album a very strong 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2006-05-03

this is absolutely a fabulous collection of music. one of my most favorite CDs EVER (and i am not easily pleased). the music is very seductive & beautiful - makes you want to move with it. the lyrics, though very sexual in nature, lie subtly under the music. it makes great dinner music leaving the unknowing unaware of what is being said. it is unlike any of Vanessa Daou's other's albums. i wish she would put out something else comparable to this, but unfortunately i find her other works far less superior.

4 out of 5 stars Oh me oh my.......2005-07-22

I was not familiar with the works of Erica Jong prior to this cd so I really didn't know what to expect, but boy oh boy did I get something different than what Vanessa put out before! This is pure sex to music. Gets you all in the mood. I can't say enough about it, except I wish I would have found this cd much eariler than now. The Big "O" for your ears. Enjoy :)

5 out of 5 stars Sunday Afternoons and *Every* Afternoon.......2005-05-28

Ok, if you want to own a CD that's guaranteed to elicit a "who's THAT?!?" from every person who hears it, buy this CD. This is one of my very favorite CDs of all time (out of a very large collection across genres). What's most mesmerizing is the sensual beat that's underscored by jazzy/bluesy piano riffs, not to mention Vanessa Daou's sexy, breathy vocals. I have a later CD of hers (Make You Love), and while it's decent, this one's the one to own.

Agree with the other reviewer who noted it's a very HOT thing to pop in the CD player if you're yearning to get that elusive kiss. As to the reviewer whose review has since been summarily and properly panned (0 found it helpful), yes, a few of the lyrics, which are from Erica Jong, are a little, uh, sexual, but forget the lyrics! Just sit back, listen and let the groove of every track on this CD transport you. You won't reach for the skip button on any track. Listen to it front to back and over and over and enjoy the, uh, ancillary benefits. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Heavy beats, lots of fun.......2006-11-03

This is a high energy dance song, lots of thumping and lots of expression that will keep you in high gear.

4 out of 5 stars NOT QUITE WHAT I EXPECTED....BUT STILL GREAT!.......2006-10-23

As a deeply devoted fan of Chicane, I must say I was a little dissappointed with this, as many hardcore fans around the world will be. However, after listening a few more times, this track really touches you, with its yearning male vocals courtesy of Tom Jones, and the beautiful filtered guitar riffs and soft synth chords. It definitely works a dancefloor, and as a dj and clubber, I can say that i LOSE IT to this! Although not the blissed out and ethereal anthem we had hoped for, Chicane has grown as an artist and this is a great display of a brilliant musician broadening his sound. The drums are tight, the bass is heavy, and the overall feeling takes you to the real sound of Ibiza! If you are new to Chicane, buy "Behind The Sun" before this.. If you are a fan, you may be dissappointed at first listen, but give a couple more spins and it will hit you!

3 out of 5 stars (sigh).......2006-09-05

Another single from Chicane's never-to-be-released new album, it seems. It's been six damn years since Nick released his last LP; for three of those years, I've been beginning to lose hope that he'll ever release another one. Why have I lasted so long without new material? Because his two albums to date, "Behind the Sun" and "Far from the Maddening Crowds" are just that good -- even though I can't listen to them anymore.

5 out of 5 stars This song rocks in the clubs!!!.......2006-07-09

This song has a club beat that just makes you want to dance. Tom Jones as a featured addition was a great choice. Just when you think TJ will fade, he comes back full force with modern music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2006-06-30

All four songs on the CD are the same song but remixed in different ways, especially the last one as it has a cool disco-type beat. I love all four. Tom Jones is great and he sounds excellent. If you like dance music and Tom Jones then you will be very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars They are our past..........2003-05-23

...and maybe, maybe they are our future. I have been listening to new age music since I was in the 5th grade but this was mostly the first one I ever listened to. I remember hearing a few songs my dad played when I was very young. But this was the first one that I bought. Deep Forest is the name used by french keyboardists Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez but they don't just use keyboards they also use afican vocals. It is an excellent combination and so far the best one that I have heard from world music.

In my opinion, every song is worth listening to. My favorites on the album are: Sweet Lullaby[ambient mix], Night Bird, Desert Walk, White Whisper and The Second Twilight. The extra features on the album are different mixes from Sweet Lullaby, Deep Forest and Forest Hymn. This is just like a special edition of the original album called Deep Forest which as I know it now is out of print. But I am glad that I was able to get a copy of this one.

I would recommend this album to anyone who likes tribal rythems with new age music. I loved the album and I hope you do to.

I'm a fan of Deep Forest. I love it. Deep Forest (along with Enigma) is #1 new release I am watching for in stores and/or on Amazon.com and as soon it comes out I buy it. Along with Deep Forest I also love Enigma, Amethystium and few others. Deep Forest is one of the best New Age "artists". I recommend all Deep Forest CDs to every New Age music fan and not only.
Wonderful and exotic music for your ear and soul!

3 out of 5 stars Wacky, wacky group!.......2002-09-20

Wild, Wild World Mix Music. What is "World Mix Music"? Can't really explain it. All I know is that I heard one song and bought the album. The pygmie yodeling song got to me. (I actually heard it in my sleep!)

Listened to it so much, I can't anymore. It's different, if you like that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars A PIECE OF EDEN.......2002-03-29

Like in the Bible, this CD is a trip inside a forest, where the past, represented by primitive people, could be felt like a return to the beginning of Genesis, where world was just a Sweet lullaby during the firsts twilights, and humans and trees, animals and even the wind sung togheter. It is also a description of a wanted future. Best Songs: Sweet Lullaby, Sunrise at Alcatraz, Forest Hymn

5 out of 5 stars Deep Forest.......2001-12-08

Great group if you like ambient tribal rythyms ;-)

5 out of 5 stars You gotta be original, man.......2006-03-23

The great Jazz saxophone genius who influenced so many tenor sax players said, "play yourself!" Which leads me to Heather Small. I first discovered her as she knocked my socks off singing the old Tom Jones 60's hit-I Who Have Nothing. It's part of a British tribute to American songwriting legends Lieber and Stoller. While all the current divas sing by not ever ending a note but fly unemcumbered into the stratasphere and never a brethe. Well Small sings in the range of the middle and often lower register. She stops for words! She sounds very much like the great Nina Simone and has a way of scooping n otes very reminiscent of Cher. And Cher is a much better singer than she is given credit for. Small and M People are refreshingly original, and side man Chris "Snake" Davis is an added thrill.

4 out of 5 stars Decent hits collection for the casual Listener.......2005-05-12

Mike Pickering's UK dance/soul act M People fronted by ex-Hot House vocalist Heather Small were an integral part of Britain's soundtrack in the 1990s. Clocking up an amazing 18 top 40 hits, and 3 major albums that spent the better part of the decade in the charts its hard not to see why. Despite all the hits the act amazingly never had a UK #1 single!

This release "Ultimate Collection" is an update from 2000's "The best of M People" which attempts to cover the M People's single output from 1993-2000 as well as Heather Small's solo work. This release perplexed me. Fans who bought the original "Best of M People" were excited to get 3 new songs but complained that the release omitted smaller hits "excited" and "love rendezvous"- the latter a hard to find single and very much different from the version that appeared on "Bizarre fruit". With the "ultimate collection" the label listened to fans and included the two tracks but then cut "dreaming" and the top 10 single "itchycoo park" which doesnt make sense.

Regardless of the track listing casual fans and listeners will find this to be an amazing album (especially those who passed on Heather's solo album "proud") as all the major hits are here including their worldwide hit "moving on up". For those looking for an upbeat positive dance/ soul album "ultimate collection" by the M People is definetly worth the import price.

3 out of 5 stars Some Difference from Hotel Costes 6.......2004-01-01

I ordered this CD after seeing 5 star reviews at amazon.
It very well may simply be a matter of preferences, but I would definitely rate Hotel Costes 6, also compiled by Stephane Pompougnac, as excellent and worthly of 5 stars. However, in comparison, the Saks Fifth Avenue sound is not quite the same, with the exception of a few songs of the same flavour. This could have been intentional to differentiate it from the Hotel Costes series.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Milk Chocolate.......2003-11-12

Picture this: driving down the road in a convertable on a sunny fall day. The wind is rushing through your hair, and the temp is perfect enough to be wearing a light sweater. To the left you see the ocean, and you get a big ol' smile on your face. That's what listening to this CD is like. Far better than the previous Costes albums (which, if you know them, is saying TONS), this album delivers on all fronts. Not only does it present seemless jazz tunes with full vocals (track 4's "hoping"), but it also let's you get funky on more than one occasion. This is the definitive collection of electro-jazz-blah blah blah... get it! And yes, it's kind of cheesy that it's marketed through a department store, but who cares... you can't see the cover when it's playing in your convertable!

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2003-07-17

Well, I am a HUGE fan of Stephane Pompougnac and this album is, in my opinion, fantastic, just like the costes series. He doesn't disappoint. I especially love tracks 5-8, but really all the tracks are good, and different in their own way. Way cool!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection in the Costes Tradition.......2003-07-01

Stephane is a talented DJ and his compilations are not limited to those released as Hotel Costes collections . If you know the Costes series, this is an excellent addition to your music library.

5 out of 5 stars Ancore POMPOUGNAC !.......2003-05-31

It's a Costes series but with a different name, but the music are always the same : good music!.Messieur Pompougnac here again make well his business. 14 traks without one to skip. 4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's First, Quite Possibly, Best, Beethoven Symphony Cycle.......2007-05-23

For those wondering why Leonard Bernstein was such an important, exciting conductor, there's no better introduction than these fine early stereo recordings he made with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Critics have celebrated these as exciting, revelatory accounts, almost as memorable as those from George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra and Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker, which were recorded almost at the same time as Bernstein's. The only reason why I'd give higher recommendations to Szell's and Karajan's cycles lies primarily with the acoustical qualities of the recording studios (In Karajan's case the converted Berlin church where he made most of his 1960s and 1970s recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker was sonically the best at that time.) and the overall quality of the musicianship of their respective ensembles, which I would have to rate slightly higher than the New York Philharmonic's. The two finest recordings from Bernstein's New York Philharmonic cycle are those with of the 3rd and 5th symphonies which remain two of the most dramatic recordings of these pieces that I've heard. Overall, I think this set deserves favorable comparisons with his mid 1970s Deutsche Grammophon cycle recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker during live performances at Vienna's Musikverein; the only exceptional differences are the slightly warmer acoustics of the orchestra and concert hall in the 1970s cycle, and Bernstein's usage of slightly quicker tempi and smaller orchestral forces. If you're looking for an alternative traditional Beethoven symphony cycle, then you won't miss by acquiring this early Bernstein cycle.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's early Beethoven makes an enticing bargain.......2007-02-20

I wonder if Leonard Bernstein was the first American conductor to record a complete Beethoven cycle? He must have been, and two of these performances--the Eroica and the Fifth Sym. -- were made famous as vehicles for LB's television talks in the Fities and Sixties. Millions of post-war kids learned from them and I'm one. In retrospect Bernstein's Beethoven wasn't as propulsive and exciting as memory made them. But these performances are full-boded, direct, and satisfying. Perhaps the authority of Karajan and the Berlin Phil. isn't present, but even so, Sony is offering the cycle as a tremendous bargain, all the more so if you buy it used at Amazon Marketplace. Several overtures are thrown in, along with Isaac Stern's excellent account of the Violin Concerto (conductor and soloist are in sympathy, as always, but this is one of their poorest sounding recordings, unfortunately).

LB used a big orchestra for his Beethoven, and the Columbia Records engineers caught them in a big, reverberant space. If you want to hear this music on a modest scale or with historical touches, lok elsewhere. After he decamped to Europe, Bernstein made a second Beethoven cycle with the Vienna Phil. that's leaner, faster, but somewhat lacking in the excitment of discovery that one heard the first time around.
