5 out of 5 stars Upper percentile of (pigeon hole coming) Chill Genre.......2006-11-11

This guy does not have the industry, spin, and following of genre masters like thievery company, but this is every bit as good. However you characterize this music it is in the top 5% the genre. If you like Zero 7, thievery company, air supply, or radiohead, then you will like this. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the technical quality...I couldn't do that anyway. The used price reflects the current market value of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Great chilled groove CD.......2003-03-19

This CD is great for a myriad of occasions - it's the perfect type of background music, but can be in the "spotlight", too. It's ambient in the way that while you're listening, you feel like you should be watching a really cool movie - perfect soundtrack music. But it's also "groove" because you can't help but want to move your body to the beat at many occasions when listening.

I have listened to this CD many, many times and honestly am NOT at all tired of it. It's a true "classic" for me because it never gets old - I continue to discover more interesting elements every time I hear it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Full of images and smooth, solid grooves.......2002-11-20

Uplift Drift, is a cinematic journey that "Lifts you up and takes you higher" Full of images and smooth, solid grooves that transport the listener to a place where you have the freedom to lean back and float or get up and move to the ambient groove.

This CD is very good in the audio sense also... Clean tight mixes, an obvious amount of work went into the recordings presented here. Terms like "attention to detail" come to mind. It seems a lot of attention was also paid to the psyco-acoustic realm, where sound images drift in, out and past the listener during their journey. Check this one out on headphones !!

The orchestration and rhythms are top notch and totally original. I think Magic Sound Fabric has carved out a signature sound here. Working in a genre where there is precious little "Dub" oriented music that smoothly blends elements of Ambient, Reggae, Experimental Electronic and good old Space Music, I would think this CD is poised for major exposure and acceptance in an otherwise cluttered music industry.

The CD features full art work and professional packaging unlike many indie artists. The label, Spiralight, has really pulled out all the stops in quality indie music distribution. I hope to see it grow as well.

All in all, Uplift Drift is a valued addition to any CD collection regardless of musical taste, but especially to those of us who enjoy good electronic music!

Album Description

This Singapore-born, Berklee-educated songwriter combines the haunting otherworldliness of artists like Sarah McLachlan and Sting with the open veracity of Joni Mitchell. The result is Corrinne May's stunning self-titled release. May's voice is instantly intoxicating - beautiful and adept, but never needlessly showy. Her melodies slide elegantly through well-executed, smart arrangements. Even though one track, the lovely "If You Didn't Love Me", was co-written by Carole King and Carole Bayer Sager, May's solely self-penned songs stand on their own as solid, engaging examples of writing. "Stay on the Road" and "All that I Need" are lush driven pop while "Mr. Beasley" and the sweet opener "Fly Away" are piano adorned folk gems. With her hopeful, fluid lyrics and heavenly voice, this is a touching, enchanting record.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful..........2007-05-05

Corrinne knows how to sing to your soul. Her words speak to your heart and tug at your emotions. She's a beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice, and a knack for writing songs. A hit in Singapore and a rising star in the U.S.
Corrinne is one of the few female singers I listen to.
Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars The best artist I never heard of............2007-03-17

I am completely delighted with this CD! Corrinne May has the voice of an angel. The entire CD is is a positive, joyful listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars simple but great.......2006-01-27

Most of the songs on here are pretty sad. There's not a whole lot of instruments on here, it's mostly piano and guitar. The music is not complex but it's pretty and has actual melodies which a lot of pop music is missing today. Every song on here sounds good to me at least. If you're not sure listen to the samples. My favorite songs on here are 'Fly Away', it's about the sadness a mother experiences when her child grows up and leaves home, 'Fall to Fly', 'Mr Beasley unplugged' which is the happiest song on the disc and 'Walk Away' which is about an abusive relationship . Guys don't worry, this is not just a CD for women, you'll enjoy it too, I did. This is really beautiful music.

The price of the CD itself is kind of expensive and you can't really find it used. Still though it's worth the $16 plus shipping.

Listen to longer two minute samples at cdbaby.com .

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, meaningful words.......2005-05-31

This is a CD to treasure and to give to friends. Indeed, I have done so and all my friends home and abroad have enjoyed it very much. I love the wonderful tunes, her friendly voice, her exact piano playing and meaningful lyrics. But what really touches me is her luminous personality and strong values that shine through in the way she exceutes her songs and in her lyrics. Corrinne is a wonderful change from the normal image of the musicians that throng the popular music world.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Refreshment.......2005-04-19

This CD is just a little different to stand on its own. Take a clean well balance emotional female singer with great range, add some lite jazz & pop hooks to some unique modal changes, play with mostly guitar or piano backup, & wrap within great sound production. The only thing missing is the lyrics. Sometimes you can guess what the next word will be & some songs come close to Christian Pop Rock because of the subject matter (Is she singing about God, humanity, or a boyfriend/lover in most of the songs?), but don't worry, this CD is way above that style.

Are you tired of all the gloom & doom of modern Pop? Do you want something refreshing? Do you want to smile as you drive down the freeway? Give this CD a spin to clear the air.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, for the most part.......2004-12-19

Hungry Lucy's vocalist (Christa Belle) sounds a lot like kaRIN from Collide (who came first though is questionable); however, her voice is less sugary sweet and more plaintative. At the same time, the music is less ethereal, not that this is bad. Actually, the lack of excessive electronic programming and overuse of vocals is refreshing here, and in some works, such as "Could It Be?" Christa Belle's sinister (yet not overly sweet voice) goes well with the exotic and lovely programming. The music overall has a more melancholy and sinister feeling to it than comparable bands like Collide; still, I admit sometimes the plaintative vocal style leaves something lacking (perhaps some feeling?) to some of the more "upbeat" songs, except for the song "Could It Be?", which is quite memorable and elusive, and one of my favourite songs from this album.

5 out of 5 stars I think this a very creative group.......2004-11-12

I am not sure what the other reviewers are expecting to hear. Actually I was not sure either. This group start on one level of existance and travels on to other levels of existence while continuing to evolve!!!! Open your creative mind and injoy, besides she has one of the most soft haunting voices in this dark wave/gothic/pop/etheral style, while still expanding into new relms of existence. A fan for life!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great but not that great.......2004-07-04

Half good, half bad. For a duo which are renowned for producing catchy goth electro and are starting to emerge from the underground, I expected a fair bit more - especially after hearing "Bound In Blood" (which is a superb track). Some of the tracks on this album are so positive and sentimental it's like listening to the cheesiest pop music and that's very disappointing. I want misery and pessimism! The opening track, "Could It Be", would have to be the best track on the entire album. "Fearless" sounds a lot like an early Madonna song, Christa's vocals even sound very similar to Madonna. "Telltale Shot" is truly one of the most beautiful melancholy goth tracks I've ever heard. It's a shame that pretty much all the other tracks, including "In The Circle", all sound too much alike and the album gets very boring quite quickly. The fact that Hungry Lucy are capable of producing such fantastic and original tracks such as "Bound In Blood", "Could It Be" and "Telltale Shot" makes you wonder why the rest of this album is so bad as they have great potential. If it wasn't for the few good tracks and remixes, not to mention Christa's amazing voice, nothing would save this album from being a complete dud. I anticipate a much better third album.

1 out of 5 stars Glo.......2004-06-15

I just went for it and bought the CD but I'm not really impressed, not that she doesn't have talent...it's just not a very good album. She could do better.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2004-05-23

I was in the mood to branch out and try some different "off the beaten path" music that had catchy female vocals and bought this CD based on the recommendations here.

I'm quite pleased with the quality of this album. Production qualities are top notch, most of the songs have a haunting somberness with strong, ringing vocals from the duets female vocalist. The remix CD (2nd disc included) nicely balances this out with jazzed up remixes of several of the tracks on the first CD.

It is apparent that Hungry Lucy is a pretty underrated band and will only get better with subsequent releases.

If you're looking for something different, something that is both relaxing and catchy to listen to, then this CD might be a good choice for you.

Stromkern returns with a hard hitting whirlwind of electronic mutilations, intoxicating beats and an occasional driving guitar. Stromkern's latest release, Light it Up, picks up where its predecessor left off and showcases a more advanced Stromkern. Stellar tracks like Standup, Klang, Sentinel and Forgiven lead the new assault and assure Stromkern's role as one of the new pioneers of the American electro scene. Light it Up also features guest appearances from Frank Spinath of Seabound and Victoria Lloyd of HMB, Monochrome and Claire Voyant.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not recommended.......2007-05-03

I first heard Stromkern when they toured with Front Line Assembly. Their show was horrible. The music was extremely monotonous and was played poorly. I figured they were just having an off night, so I decided to give their albums a try. I was extremely disappointed. The music did not have any electronic feel and was basically a metal album. The vocals were way too hip-hop sounding--when they weren't over zealously trying to sound tough--and reminded me of an armature-ish Linkin Park. All I can say is that this album is a long shot from good EBM...or any EBM for that matter. I suggest sticking to FLA, KMFDM, or something along those lines.

4 out of 5 stars Might be more rock, but pretty awesome for an electro rock album..........2006-09-03

I'm a big fan of their older work and saw them when they were touring last year. Their new work isn't as great as the old stuff, but I still think it is a very nice produced work. I am glad they tried doing something different, but didn't really lose much of their previous sound. It is more rock, and that is how they intended it to be. A bit more political too? Anyway, it took me a while to get into this album, but after a few listens I was set. My favorites are Reminders, Ruin (really cratchy inbetween rock and electro :)), Stand Up (probably the most catchy dancey track on this album, it was also their single), and Delete (this one's so hard, but it's good). It's really a well rounded album I think, go check it out!

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't stomach this one.......2006-03-26

What drew me to Stromkern was the electonics and the strings they used. This CD is more of a metal album. most of the songs all sounded the same to me. I gave it numerous tries but it just didn't click. I need electronic noodling in my music.

3 out of 5 stars Electro-Politics For An Electronic Generation.......2006-01-03

Stromkern have always released strong records ever since their 1997 debut Flicker Like A Candle. Followed by the highly experimental and minimal sounding Dammerung In Traum and the critically acclaimed Armageddon in 2000, Stromkern are back with Light It Up, covering fresh ground they never have before.

Almost a decade down the road, Ned Kirby has finally given in to writing political lyrics. According to Kirby, it just became impossible to keep the political elements out of his music. And I applaud his move. Maybe it's my personal fascination with political lyrics; I count some highly political bands - Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Sex Pistols - as my favourite bands of all time. And lyrically, Light It Up presents Kirby's reflections on the last several years spent living in the United States, covering topics of war, terrorism, globalization, corruption and greed.

In fact, my favourite song on here is without a doubt "Reminders" - which, is probably the most political as well as one of the most terribly sad/angry tracks I've heard in a while. It begins with samples from George W. Bush's State of the Union addresses placed over repetitive synth lines and progresses into an energetic frenzy by the end of the track. It will put the listener in pure euphoria.

The first single off the album "Stand Up" (which continues to be a club favourite throughout the world) and "Hindsight" are two other outstanding tracks on Light It Up. Except for these two tracks, the rest are a great listen but fall short of being anything more than that, though they of course, are worth the spin every time I listen to the album - just not the sort of songs you'd want to put on repeat.

What has always been especially striking about Stromkern has been the staccato-like rap Kirby uses. This is hip hop meets industrial. It creates one of the most unique sounds I have ever heard. And this, of continues to be the trademark sound of Stromkern in Light It Up.

It may have been a long time coming but Light It Up was definitely worth the wait. Expanding their horizons with this release, Stromkern have solidified their position as one of the electro acts of the moment, not only from North America, but beyond as well.

5 out of 5 stars Post-industrial as it best!.......2005-10-07

STROMKERN returns with a hard hitting whirlwind of electronic mutilations, intoxicating beats and an occasional driving guitar. Almost four years after the release of ''Armageddon'' comes STROMKERN's 4th studio album, ''Light It Up''. The effects of four years of touring can be heard throughout the record, but most clearly on tracks like ''Forgiven'' or ''Delete'', with pummeling acoustic drums and guitars meshing with STROMKERN's signature electronic core. The new album also marks the band's first forays into outside vocal collaborations, with Frank Spinath of SEABOUND guesting on the technoid ''Sentinel'' and Victoria Lloyd of CLAIRE VOYANT on the ballad ''Hindsight''. The first single ''Stand Up'', a classic STROMKERN track packed with dense sequences and Ned's rapid-fire vocal, peaked at #4 in the German Alternative Charts and remains in regular rotation at clubs throughout the world.

"Ann Sweeten is an extremely talented woman…not just a musician, but a composer, arranger and producer, Ann is a pianist whose abilities are unrivalled. Technical composition, only to be expected from a background in classical, is blended with originality and passion, delivering pianist perfection." - LINEAR REFLECTIONS

"One of the most graceful and quietly soothing albums I've heard. Very highly recommended!" - SOLO PIANO PUBLICATIONS

Three-time music award nominee and contemporary classical pianist/composer Ann Sweeten has crafted a signature sound over the course of six albums. Her music has aired and been reviewed across the world to wide critical acclaim! A Place in the Sun is a musical journey of healing and hope, full of passionate melodies performed on Steinway grand pianos awash with synthesized orchestration and several flute performances. Sweeten's last two albums charted #3 at radio, making them two of the most-played modern instrumental albums in North America. A Place in the Sun is at once relaxing and soothing while it soars with melodic integrity. So much more than just background music, this is a truly moving listening experience. The liner notes are a must-read, as the compositions reflect moments of Sweeten's personal journey through breast cancer. A story of hope, light and victory!

CAPTIVATING MUSIC FROM THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS

They came across the ocean from the British Isles.
They sang the songs of their homeland in a new country.
They lived, loved, and died here.
This is the music of the ForeignLander.

Lydia McCauley documented folk music at the prestigious Appalachian Music Archive in Berea, Kentucky in the early 1980's and studied with some of the best folk musicians in the Appalachian region. Known today as a songwriter, McCauley returns to her roots in her fifth album, ForeignLander; a collection of innovatively arranged pieces from 17-20th Century Appalachia, beautifully performed by McCauley and her touring Ensemble, along with special guests. While careful to preserve Appalachian traditions in this album, Lydia creates a fresh and contemporary sound that pleases both traditional and progressive music audiences. Selections include: One Morning in May, Pretty Saro, The River Trilogy (arranged by producer Kurt Scherer), Barbara Allan and Stella (two favorite live performance pieces), a haunting version of Lover's Lament, and Swallow's Return, a joyful instrumental composed by L. McCauley.

        4 out of 5 stars I'm still waiting for a full-length album.......2002-01-02

I was a little disappointed by Bloodblue, especially after Hooked. My real problem with Bloodblue is that it's TOO SHORT! I love Jake, but I wish they would stop putting out 3 minute songs, especially on an EP (Bloodblue is all of 23 minutes of music). They have so much talent, it's a shame to see it not fully realized. Bloodblue is almost a tease. I'm still waiting for a "real" album from them.

5 out of 5 stars They did it again........2001-05-31

More great sounds from New York, courtesy of Jake. Great songs, great voice, great album.

5 out of 5 stars Jessie Lee Montague of Jake.......2000-12-01

Jessie Lee is the female Neil Young. Stay tuned to this rising star as she and her rockin' band tear up the night sky like a roman candle...

        Album Description

Road Movies is a collection of nine compositions primarily recorded live in the studio. It is the first release featuring the powerful rhythm section of Bill Rieflin and Fred Chalenor who lend a more propulsive, focused, and dynamic element to the group. Hence, Road Movies is sometimes intense, other times playful, often beautiful, and always a fascinating listening experience.

        4 out of 5 stars Primal Complexity.......2004-01-14

"Road Movies" by the quintet (in this aggregation) fronted by soundscape explorer Jeff Greinke requires some effort on the listener's part. Each song morphs through various stages, sometimes delving into dissonance, before emerging again in a more or less similar frame of reference.

The musicians throw themselves into creating a frothy mix that swirls and pulsates, they use their instruments creatively, interjecting a snippet, a snarl, or a pulse that somehow holds the center together. A concave of equals, this quintet lays down some superb grooves and then wobbles away, almost as if seeing just what they can get away with. (This music sounds great through headphones and makes a great energizer while recreating budget tables in InDesign.)

Sometimes the eclecticism renders sections of a track nearly (for now) unlistenable, but an amazing rhythm section not only propels the action but keeps it all solid. The trumpet may be the most distinct part of this sound, sometimes muted, sometimes wailing, sometimes crying. Guitarist Dennis Rea, the only coconspirator held over from an earlier session released by Land, plies his trade with some rather unusual effects, not shoving his way to the front, but not easy to miss either. Mr. Greinke, the wizard in this enclave, conjures up various electronic samples, rhythms, effects, and voices (which sound a whole lot like Gollum), sort of like a caffeinated Brian Eno might.

An infectious primal complexity exists here, and if these songs were broken out into separate tracks, they would no doubt find a way to reassemble themselves and proceed to get things revved up once more.

        4 out of 5 stars Still Growing.......2002-09-07

This is a CD that keeps growing. On the first few listens, my reaction was along the lines of, "OK, this is good; I like it." But as I kept on moving into the CD, I found more and more underneath the surface. More than a year later I find myself still listening intensely. What at first seemed like funky melodic jazz has revealed itself to be very complex and fascinating. Just a wonderful recording.
