Product Description
To celebrate their 40th release, Comet has made a compilation of their most precious afrobeat jewels. The label was founded by Manu Boubli and Eric Trosset and since its inception in 1998 it has contributed enormously to the renaissance of the Afrobeat movement.
Starting with the release of Tony Allen's Black Voices, produced by Doctor L, and then Psyco On Da Bus, a second collaboration between the two but also including Tony Allen's own group, Afrobeat 2000, this team have released records of a consistently high quality with guest appearances from the likes of Ty (Big Dada) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) as well as attracting remixes from Ig Culture and Kirk Di Giorgio.
This record also features tracks from Ghetto Blaster and Africa 70 taken from the compilations of classic rare 70's afro-funk - Racubah, Ouelele, Bilongo
Oscillating between future-world and classic afro-funk, this is a great compilation and a must-have album for any lover of good music.

Album Description
Waxing Deep Records is pleased to announce the first ever compilation of Cuban funk: Si, Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revolutionary Cuba, Volume One. An unprecedented combination of socialism and artistic freedom flourished during the mid-years of Castro's Cuba, enabling musicians to create an innovative body of music based on traditional styles like those made famous by the Buena Vista Social Club. Si, Para Usted captures the spirit of this time. The music ranges from son, beat, jazz, and funk, and abounds with psychedelic influences, electronic experimentation, and a heavy dose of soul. Communist funk may seem unlikely, but here it is. Si, Para Usted was lovingly compiled by Dan Zacks of Waxing Deep Radio in response to massive listener demand for the Cuban music played on the show. Outside of the Waxing Deep archive, the bulk of funky Cuban music is virtually unobtainable. Cuban recordings were never widely distributed and few have been reissued. Utterly committed to sharing good music, Dan took it upon himself to make these fantastic tracks more widely accessible. Almost all of the tracks were re-mastered from the original tapes kept by the Cuban government in a dusty Havana warehouse. Given the poor quality of Cuban vinyl, this means the music on Si, Para Usted has a quality of sound previously unavailable. Quite simply, the music has never sounded this good.

Live! Live Juju! is the King heard the way he should be--recorded live in Seattle in 1987. Considering the 20-piece band was taped through just two microphones, the sound quality is stunning, but it's the music that packs the real knockout here with the frantic and aptly titled "Drumming Interlude" boasting the percussive power of the group. There's plenty of vocal ability onstage too, as the anthemic "Africa and America" shows to great effect. The real highlight, however (apart from "Moti Mo," which appeared--as did Ade himself--in the Robert Altman film O.C. & Stiggs), has to be the opening medley that threatens to explode right out of the speakers and into your room. This is everything you could wish for in a live record, so much so that you might end up cheering along with the crowd. --Chris Nickson

A Masterpiece, A gem. Buy With Confidence.......2006-03-17
I am blessed to have the company of musicians I highly respect in my band. Rarely, one of them recommends an album as so important we should have it in our collections. This is one of those albums. I have had it a month and it has stayed in rotation on my cd player; I have not taken it out.
Sunny brings the house down.......2003-12-10
King Sunny Ade burst on the American scene much the way Marley did with his memorable Roxy concert, but unfortunately Ade has never been able to match the intensity of this performance in subsequent CD's. This is African guitar and drums at their very best, a kinetic whirlwind of rhythms that is riveting to listen to. Ade draws from a deep well of Nigerian music to put together a stellar concert that will sweep you off your feet. The music is chant-like, exhorting the audience to participate in the polyphony of sounds. It is very hard to stay seated. There is also a video of him and Ebenezer Obey for those who must see him to believe him.
Essential World Music.......2003-07-30
All too often, "popular world music" means "music of other cultures as seen through Western eyes." Happily, this is not the case with "Live Live Ju Ju." Here, the roles are reversed - King Sunny Ade artfully reinterprets several Western musical styles, some which are Africaan-inspired (jazz, blues, raggae) and some that are not (Country-Western, Hawaiian slack-key guitar) - all through the eyes of an African and his impressive band. The songs here all offer just a taste of what this man can do in a popular context. The recording itself, made on the cusp of the CD age, sounds awesome, with every nuance sounding clear as a bell.

This compilation of King Sunny Ade's work is a mixed bag. The music is fabulous, and a perfect introduction to Ade's relatively early work. What's not perfect is the way the album is put together. In the case of "Olomonge Ma Jo," and many of the other tracks, what you get is an extract, rather than the whole piece. It gives the producers an opportunity to showcase more facets of Ade's material, but in doing so the power and flow of the band is sacrificed--an awkward tradeoff. However, if you can live with that, what comes out of the speakers won't let you down, as the juju rhythms, propelled by a powerhouse percussion section, the snaking pedal steel, and Ade's wonderfully persuasive voice, keep things moving along in a manner that's impossible to resist. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Great CD!!.......2002-10-15
This is an awesome album.
An utter waste of hard-earned dollars!.......2000-04-05
Don't get me wrong: 'Sweet Banana' and 'My Dear', the albums on which this compilation were based are classics and vintage Sunny Ade. However, the CD is a disappointing and an unprofessional effort from the producer(s). Basically, what they did was pop in the original records, wait for a few minutes, disengage the needle from the vinyl and wait a couple of minutes and restart another track. Other than tracks 1, 2 and 6 perhaps, the others do not have a beginning nor an end. Even, the above ones do not have endings; just a collage and a thorough 'bum job' of an otherwise excellent effort by Sunny Ade.
you have to smile.......2000-02-26
It's impossible to listen to King Sunny Ade or his colleague/competitor Ebenezer Obey without smiling: The music is energetic, bright, happy, and amazingly complex from start to finish. A new convert to juju, my first disc was "Ju Ju Music", also by King Sunny. I found that disc so thoroughly enjoyable, with its fusion of African, Caribbean, and Hawaiian sounds, that I just had to try another. My trepidation that the next disc I bought couldn't possibly be as good as the first was unfounded. This disc is just as good and more amply filled. Now, which one should I try next?
certainly an album that brings back good memories.......1999-01-05
this album brings back good memories and is full of life....recommended for any sunny fan...he really is a great artiste and whats more his music is never out of date

Graceland without Paul Simon's voice.......2003-06-27
Syncopated, clean guitar, a jumping bass line, your occasional accordion, and up-tempo every time. The music should be familiar to fans of Graceland, but on Zulu Jive it's the real deal, without nasal rhymin' Simon grafted on top. A compilation of four South African groups are included. Aaron Mbambo (with his backup girls sounding a lot like Bob Marley's) and Shoba have a rawer style that's more fun to hear, while Joshua Sithole's harmonies are better polished for radio. Rounding it out are the fast-moving instrumentals of the Rainbows. A great listen.
