5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Talent, Realized But Unrecognized.......2006-04-14

Kill me now. I'm not sure I want to live in a musical world in which music this good is lost. So if it's that good, why haven't you heard of Gabrielle Gewirtz? I'm glad you asked.

We live in a world of musical sysiphus, ny friend, and artists whose music does not have acceptable backing or grass roots momentum are pretty much lost to the public. But of course, you know this. Better more Springsteen or Stones than the unknown. And so talent lies unnoticed but by a lucky few. In this case, I consider myself lucky.

Gabrielle combines the best of what she has in "Wide", not the least of which is considerable talent. She is just branching out from her folk and gospel roots to light jazz and the combination is captivating. To pull it off, she invited some of her favorite musicians to participate, including percussionist/electronics whiz Clancy who produced and bassist-extraordinaire Nicholas d'Amato. The result is a beautifully recorded but extremely personal Gabrielle album... the best of both worlds, shall we say.

She plays acoustic guitar, as do most 'folkies', and she sings very well, but the key here is songwriting. She has a way of fitting her voice to various moods of the pieces which can at times be quite disarming. Take, for instance, "She Smiles", an uplifting rocker with very slight jazz tinge in which voices fill the chorus so that her vocals become controlled, but free. Or "No Sign No Sound", which is at one and the same time introspective ballad and choogling rocker. Or "Melina" and "Whose Life" where her voice floats over simple but extremely apt and well done arrangements, and which are superb three in the morning when you're crashing songs. There is a bit of Kate Bush there, and maybe Joni Mitchell, and possibly Sandy Denny and a thousand other fine singer/songwriters, but the music is all Gabrielle Gewirtz (except for the excellent pop jazz of "I Know You Know" and the plagiarized but extremely well done arrangement of Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time") and it won't take more than a few listens to strike home. Gabrielle has the talent. All she needs is the audience.

Taking a chance is tough, I know, as expensive as music is these days, but Gabrielle is worth taking a chance on. "Wide" could easily be the next decade's lost great album, though it is worth much more. It is worth being a hit, if I might be so bold. In my head, it already is.

4 out of 5 stars Moving to the Music, a personal & "daily" practice.......2001-03-20

I first learned of Gabrielle Roth at a Sacred Path men's retreat. The retreat focused on sacred movement, attaching emotions & totems to each of Roth's five dance styles: flowing, stacatto, chaos, lyrical, and stillness. We had live drumming at the retreat and didn't use recorded music. On the way home, however, I stopped and bought a copy of INITIATION so I could work through the rhythms myself.

If not danced to, the music is OK, nothing spectacular. It's not particularly great party dance music, either. But as the basis for an embodied spiritual practice? Wow! It's hard to beat.

I open up with flowing, connecting with Goddess, connecting with Earth, connecting with Ancestors, connecting with Spirit, connecting with Heart. I let my body move in flowing motions, softly, gently, slowly opening, encompassing more and more.

Moving on to stacatto, I move into a new energy space. Man, the toolmaker, not simply flowing with the current, but carving out a life. My energy level is rising. Into this movement I pour my plans, my goals, all that I would control.

The third movement, Chaos, seems to be the natural result of carving out my expectations from life. I let my body move wildly, struggling to control the rhythm, to push the river, to herd cats. This is where I bring my anger, frustration, and fear, letting the emotions flow through body language, in which no lie can be enacted.

The exhaustion of Chaos leads naturally into the rest of lyrical movement. It's discovering a new level of peace, of connectedness with the Universe, with Goddess, with Spirit; knowing that I'm not alone in the Chaos.

Finally, comes stillness, where I allow my motions to wind down, allow my body to slow down, to come to rest, to enter into meditation.

I've not worked with the other body music on the CD, I don't have enough time most days to work through the five rhythms. But that leaves me something to look forward to.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2000-03-23

This is one of the most magical CDs I've ever heard. The music is purifying. It helps to focus my mind at the end of the day when I need to relax.

Following up their landmark 1993 revival of Carousel, London's Royal National Theatre delivers another pillar of the Rodgers and Hammerstein canon with their 1998 production of Oklahoma! As on the earlier CD, Oklahoma! provides a generous amount of music (74 minutes) by including integral dance music (including Laurey's dream ballet and passages of "Kansas City") and connecting dialogue, resulting in a more complete theatrical experience than most recordings provide. It also includes two songs that were cut from the film, the grammatically incorrect but vigorous chorus number "It's a Scandal, It's a Outrage" and Jud's powerful lament, "Lonely Room." Hugh Jackman excels as Curly, while Josefina Gabrielle is an effective Laurey. Filling out the strong cast are Maureen Lipman as Aunt Eller, Jimmy Johnston as Will, Vicki Simon as Ado Annie, and Shuler Hensley as Jud; and thankfully, British accents are not prevalent on this plain. The booklet includes production notes and a synopsis with photos, but no lyrics. Of course, the question in most minds might be whether you need to make room on your shelf for another recording of Oklahoma! When it's this well done, the answer is yes. --David Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Americans do this better........2006-07-22

Not on a par with the RSC earlier masterpiece revival of Carousel. With the exception of Hugh Jackman, who can't seem to take one wrong step on a stage, this version doesn't compare to the 1979 revival. This cast isn't in the same league as the American cast of Christine Andreas, Martin Vidnovic and particularly Christine Ebersole as Ado Annie.

5 out of 5 stars Darker than the original maybe, but definately worth owning!.......2006-03-25

I loved this!! I'm sure that some people will not like the fact that this Curly has a darker side to him and that Jud is not all evil. To have the three leads also doing the ballet/dream sequence just made this movie that much better. I can definately recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the original Oklahoma. This will not take anything away from the original but can only add to your enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album.......2006-02-25

I have been involved with theatre in different capacities over the last 30 years. Trevor Nunn's production is by far the best I've seen or heard. The cast outstanding. Mr. Jackman and Mr. Hensley have a great presence. Their duet of "Pore Jud is Daid" is both funny and touching.

5 out of 5 stars Give a full-throated O.K.! to this Oklahoma!.......2006-02-23

This recording of the groundbreaking first R&H musical should arguably considered as one of the finest of its many recordings. It's true that the film soundtrack gives a definitive performance of the score, but this energetic, peppy version gives the musical its maximum oomph. The cast gives a stellar rendition of the score, and act out their parts charismatically and convincingly, even though the accents are not always authentic Southern accents. Hugh Jackman heads the cast with a rich, sumptuous portrayal of Curly, shining vocally from the first phrase of Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'. He is well-partnered by the pert, ambivalent yet tender Laurey of Josefina Gabrielle. Gabrielle also shines vocally on Many a New Day and exudes a wonderful chemistry during People Will Say We're in Love. The supporting cast is equally characterful, with Maureen Lipman a caustic Aunt Eller, contrasting against the dark hues of Shuler Hensley's Jud. Hensley's vivid portrayal of Jud adds an extra dimension to the character during the rarely-heard Lonely Room. Vicki Simon and Jimmy Johnstone make a perfectly delicious and comic pairing of Ado Annie and Will, and their moments individually and together are always a delight to hear, especially I Cain't Say No and All er Nothin'. The orchestra under John Owen Edwards is top-notch and plays this score superbly, especially the new dance arrangements that sound newly-minted, yet respectful of the originals. The presentation is splended, with a lavish booklet packed with photos, and a crisp, clean modern recording. All told, this version of Oklahoma! should certainly be highly recommended, and should elicit a spontaneous "YEOW!" from anyone who is willing to be charmed by it. I'm sure that more people will come to appreciate it and give this version its long-overdue O.K.

5 out of 5 stars quite possibly the definitive OKLAHOMA!.......2005-03-02

This fantastic OKLAHOMA! cast album features the acclaimed 1998 National Theatre revival cast headed by Hugh Jackman and Josefina Gabrielle. Mary Rodgers (the daughter of Richard Rodgers) has called this production the finest OKLAHOMA! she has ever attended. A full taped performance of the revival is available on DVD and highly-recommended from this corner. Hugh Jackman has a luscious voice as Curly, singing powerfully in all his numbers, and he performs "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'" like the song was only written yesterday. Josefina Gabrielle has a winsome quality as Laurey, and her "Out of My Dreams" is fantastic. "Many a New Day" is performed as her stridant anthem that she can do very well without the attentions of the opposite sex. This recording is further-enhanced by the all-new "Dream Ballet" orchestrated by William David Brohn, which takes as its starting point the original version but adds some fresh new touches. Be warned though: as it appears on the recording, the "Dream Ballet" has been slightly-abriged due to length purposes (for the full piece, refer to the DVD). Maureen Lipman is a sardonic delight as Aunt Eller, Vicki Simon belts Ado Annie's "I Cain't Say No" to perfection and Jimmy Johnston is fantastic as Will Parker. Shuler Hensley perfectly captures the intense and brooding nature of Jud Frye with the haunting "Lonely Room". One of the best OKLAHOMA! cast album efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Enchanting drums for trascendental dancing.......2000-06-30

This record exhales an air of ethnicity, without having any clear ethnical influences, that automatically makes you feel as if you were dancing by a bonfire in mystical night. Each of the track focuses in the energies of one animal, so if you are into shamanic travel, this record makes will help you. But it is also just as good as background music when you need to relax or as a warmup for some other kinds of dancing (like belly dance). The melodies are based on drum rythms, along with some subtle synthethiser that never gives the music that much hated "cheap New Age" feeling. A good buy!

I use this one a lot for warming up, for trance dancing, and for teaching others to dance expressively. There's a fair amount of variation in style between the different tracks, but they all work together as a single collection. This is an essential part of my dance music collection.

This is a fantastic CD. I use it for my yoga classes.

3 out of 5 stars not her best.......2005-05-09

I love Gabrielle Roth, and have worn out copies of "initiation" and "bones", but this CD just gathers dust for me insteading of making me want to dance.

5 out of 5 stars Unique.......2000-05-31

Too many albums put the word "Tibetan" in the title and end up being the artificial flavor of the month. This CD, on the other hand, is the only one I've found (and I've bought dozens looking) that really bridges the gap between the Tibetan sense of sacred mystery, and the musical vernacular of the west. And with a Russian rock star no less! Listen to this album, and you will find your mind has reached a still place that other "Tibetan" music cannot touch.

For those who are addicted to the western sound "byte" culture, a five word review: YOU MUST BUY THIS ALBUM!

3 out of 5 stars Great tape for yoga and meditation.......1999-07-29

We use this tape in my yoga class during the beginning centering meditation and Chen Rezi is just the most beautiful and awesomely calming piece of music I have heard. As a matter of fact I intend to use this when I am in labor, as I am expecting my third child this December. Namaste!

If you are looking for a CD that'll take you away while moving your body in new sensuous, uninhibited, spiritual ways, this is the one to get. Enjoy!!

4 out of 5 stars Very liberating.......2002-03-10

A friend introduced me to this guided dance CD and I really enjoyed it. My half-hour of following Roth's rhythms and encouragements and improvising my own movement left me feeling incredibly expressed, relaxed, and liberated. Rather than my mind leading my body, for once my body led my mind. Definitely a valuable experience.

I haven't listened to the second half, so I won't comment. Neither have I seen the video, but my friend said watching others do the guided dance detracts from the experience. I bet she's right; I danced with my eyes closed most of the time anyway. If you're interested, get the cd.

5 out of 5 stars Trance Music - Takes You to Another Place.......2004-06-03

This is my favorite music of the two Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors music I own. When I listen ... the first thing I hear is the rhythm and drum beats. They help me focus. As my mind calms down and body relaxes ... In track #1, "The Lonesome Song" - the native flute music, takes the listener to another time and place, where the spirit roams free but is alone, looking for the missing connection ... to another soul.On #2 "Oceana" my feelings ride the sound waves of the viola. There are haunting vocals that add depth and an other-worldly feeling to the music. In track #3, "Cloud Mountain", the kora, an African harp-like stringed instrument, along with the oboe and English horn are heard above the very enchanting drum beats. The most outstanding feature of all the tracks is the ritualistic drum ... keeps the unconcsious mind connected to its primordial roots. In track #4 "Prairie Runs", the rainstick is shaken at unexpected intervals ... to awaken the spiritual elements within the listener. Always, the drum beats connect the listener to the primitive aspects of the soul. This is trance-inducing music of the highest order. Highly recommended. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

An amazing cd- Gabrielle Roth and the mirriors are a haunting group whose music will stay with you for a long time. A friend recomended this cd to me and also their other cd "Bones"(Also a superb cd) and i fell in love. everyone should own one to help relax and to promote peace through out everywhere

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing and centering.......2000-06-24

Don't take this the wrong way--but this CD is wonderful to fall asleep to. The music will calm your mind after a busy day, without dragging you down. Before I go to bed, my mind is often buzzing with thoughts about work, family, friends. Once I turn on the stereo, all of that stops. Sometimes I want to think about something, I can't. I just go where the music guides me.

Each selection subtly blends into the next. But each piece is unique, painting mindscapes of beautiful mesas, summer campfires in the forest, or sunset on the beach--depending how you look at it.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading title, not truly a "class".......2004-08-29

This is an audio CD with music only, there is no voice-over with a guided routine, which is what I thought I was getting when I purchased this CD. Don't be mislead!! What is included, however, is a mini-poster of a routine that is suggested to go along with this collection of songs. I ended up doing my own routine, which was fine, but sometimes when you are doing yoga, you don't want to have to think about what to do next, it's nice to be "told" versus worrying about whether or not you did the same sequence of poses on the other side. (Yogi's, you know what I mean!) The music selection is average, very tribal in nature. The very last track is potentially distracting, unfortunate since you should be in sivasana at the end. Overall, average, I would recommend Yoga Rhythm By Soulfood instead.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2003-11-26

This CD doesn't include any guided poses. There is a sheet with drawings illustrating a sequence of poses (poorly done and hard to decipher). I was expecting something akin to the Yogi's Companion...

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not exactly my thing...........2003-04-12

Some good tracks on this CD, and probably quite nice overall if you teach a very spiritually-oriented class. Admittedly, I bought this CD out of curiosity and don't mind listening to most of it on a casual basis. It's about as good as the classic Asana CD, overall.

The reason I don't use it in class is very simple. The vocal and lyric of the final cut is obnoxiously repetitive and terribly self-important. Not exactly what I what when I'm setting the mood for Savasana (final resting pose).

5 out of 5 stars Seductive Sensual Music .......2005-04-23

This CD contains seductive ambient music, created by the rhythmic beat of either a pony drum, congas, talking drum or tom toms, which captures the conscious and unconscious mind weaving a spell of contentment and deep primal awareness in the listener. Additional instruments in each track add subliminal satisfaction to capture the listener's every emotion and transform the energy into deep wells of universal potential.

"Elusinian Blue" composed by Jai Uttal starts with an ancient primival tom tom beat which then has the ethereal Indian sitar-like or santur plucked instrument added ... creating a mysterious Asian aura to which male vocals add a distant powerful instinctual magnetic appeal. "Labyrinth" is a soothing combination of balaphone (an African hammered dulcimer-like instrument), pony drum, and occasional harp ... where the melody meanders into a delightful path of extraordinairily natural pleasure. The music flows like a babbling brook. It delights the senses like watching a natural waterfall ... All of the music on this CD creates a milieu of primival energy and sound that is highly seductive and hypnotic. The magnificent array of instruments combine to create a connection to nature's source of energy. The listener remains surrounded by a sense of contentment long after the CD finishes playing.

4 out of 5 stars The sacred drums of trance.......2003-03-09

_Luna_ is an album of music by a small instrumental troupe. Drums are the most prominent instruments; there are also winds, a bit of bass, an occasional human voice, and some synthesizer. When I first heard the album, I felt the tracks were too repetitive. But upon further listening, I realized _Luna_'s repetitive rhythms had their own charm. This is a CD to listen to as you meditate or do some sort of ritual. It makes me want to dance, and to get out my own drums and play along. It also makes good background music when I want something pleasant and ambient that won't distract me the way music with lyrics can.

My favorite tracks are "Persephone's Song" (pretty and lyrical with lots of winds), "Seducing Hades" (very strong sexy beat, bass guitar, and human voices making moaning sorts of sounds toward the end of the song), and "Labyrinth" (trancelike, with a marimba part that evokes the unrolling of Ariadne's famous thread). "Luna" is the only song I'm not particularly fond of, and that's just because the bouncy synthesizer noise repeated several times is the exact same noise my old Nintendo made whenever Mario jumped. A little distracting.

4 out of 5 stars If you love drums..........2002-07-31

I ran into this CD on accident through a friend, and immediately fell in love with it! The drums are awesome, peaceful and full of power. The entire cd is good to listen to for meditation or long drives, although some tracks are a little bit cheesy. I look forward to buying Gabrielle Roth's other works soon. As you can see, they are all on my wish list. :)

There are some CDs about the Moon, but this is the one that manifests her. Nice to celebrate Nights.

Very organic, whooshing, whirling sounds never quite touch the quiet swamp rhythms. This music is a dance.
