5 out of 5 stars Deeply emotional.......2006-06-11

This soundtrack is deeply emotional and gripping. I have never seen the film it goes to, but I am still able enjoy the soundtrack very much. Some soundtracks just seem to fall flat if you have not seen the film, but this isn't one of them. Full of stunning and beautiful music, it is able to stand on its own. The last track, "The Great Western Road," is the only track that has lyrics ("Speechless" has vocals; however I don't believe them to be real words, just interesting sounds), so if you're looking for a David Byrne album you can sing along with (which I know many may be looking for), this isn't really the album for you. But if you don't care if the music has lyrics or not, this is an album you cannot pass up. In my book, it is one of Byrne's best works to date.

4 out of 5 stars A perfect soundtrack to a perfect movie. . ........2003-12-24

I saw the movie whilst in the UK, immediatly hearing that it was McGregors newest enterprise. . . I did not know the plot or how dark, and sadistic it would be. The movie is typically British and is a slow drawn-out character study. It is set along the cities and canals of industrial Scotland (I believe in the 1930's) Anyway the soundtrack is the perfect compliment to the movie, and if you haven't seen it, by all means please do so. The soundtrack grips you and moves you to tears. It forces emotions to surface and releases you to flights of imagination. It is a deeply eerie and dark soundtrack filled with creepy dramatic overtones, but somehow it keeps getting put back into my CD player. Check it out, its worth the buy.

4 out of 5 stars A different side of David..........2003-11-27

One periodical stated that "Lead Us Not into Temptation" is David Byrne's best solo work to date. Though I don't think that's true to any stretch of the imagination, there is a lot of really good music on this disc. It is film music, but it is also film music that stands fine on it's own (in the same way that Peter Gabriel's "Passion" stands alone, though Gabriel re-worked a lot of that after the film's release). It's moody and dark in many places, and bizarrely upbeat in others. It is truly unlike anything Byrne has ever done, and it's not instantly recognizable as Byrne (until of course he sings at the end of the disc). This is also Byrne's first complete move away from the Latin-tinged music he has been making since "Rei Momo" in the late 80's. This CD proves that Byrne still has many musical directions he can travel and explore in. It also marks the re-emergence of his darker side which hasn't been seen since the Talking Heads days. His solo career has been mostly upbeat, sometimes goofy, and focused on very danceable beats. This CD stands in stark contrast to almost everything he's done since breaking off from the Talking Heads, with the possible exception of "The Forest" and his previous CD "Look into The Eyeball" which had some dark tinges to it.

Apparently the movie is about a murder in Scotland (I could be way off on this one) - if this is so, this music would provide an incredible backdrop for such a scene. I'm curious to see the movie based on the soundtrack alone.

Lastly, the final two songs on the disc are worth the price alone for any David Byrne fan. "Speechless" has a great incoherent vocal line that is catchy regardless of the fact that the words are almost completely opaque. "The Great Western Road" is one of the best songs Byrne has ever written, though again it's not typical Byrne. Even if you don't like the film music, these two numbers will have you putting this disc into the player again and again. This is not your typical Byrne album, and if you're looking for a collection of new Byrne songs with vocals, band, and all, you may want to avoid this one. If you're a Byrne fan however, buy this CD at least for the last two songs.

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying just for track 15.......2003-10-26

David Byrne continues to compose music of unearthly beauty. Unsuprisingly the best tracks are the ones he sings on.
If you liked "The Forest" you will like track 14. The album is worth buying just for track 15. Haunting. One of those tracks where, for a brief moment in time, your life stands still. Thank you David Byrne.

2 out of 5 stars Another soundtrack........2003-10-07

If you like David Byrne's soundtracks (which I do not), then "Lead Us Not Into Temptation" is for you. I am reminded of buying "The Forest" and all the disappointment that came with it. In my not so humble opinion, David should stick with his eccentric, eclectic brand of alternative music. That is where he excels. "Lead Us Not Into Temptation" is just an exercise in unmemorable and almost unlistenable soundtrack music. As it is an okay cd and performed by Byrne, I give it two stars, but buyers beware!

5 out of 5 stars Transformative.......2007-05-20

About ten years ago I first heard Phelps play at the East Coast Blues festival in New South Wales and, from that time, he forever changed the way I heard music as well as sending me off in a new direction in terms of what I listened to. It was instantaneous and durable change. This brilliant album confirmed everything about that first hearing. Not everything that KJP does enthrals me but this album is uniformly genius. It will break your heart and mend it at the same time.
Borrowing from Spinal Tap, there aren't enough stars for this recording. By the way, can CDs wear out?

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Great.......2006-12-13

This is a great album by a great guitar player. As one of Kelly Joe Phelps earlier recordings it is simple and easy to reach. A man and a guitar. Cliche perhaps, but Phelps can play, man can he play! I enjoy his later stuff but always return ti this album over the years.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Sad, Distinctive Slide Guitar.......2006-01-29

Kelly Joe Phelps has a truly unique and distinctive sound: acoustic slide guitar with a forlorn, dreamy quality, and a deep voice that slightly slurs the words. He sounds like the Billy Bob Thornton character from Sling Blade; like he can't decide if he wants to say the words and release them, or keep `em and eat `em.

The songs on this album are perfect for such a grudging and despondent (yet gorgeous) sound. Skip James' "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues" (Jack King suggests: "When a woman gets over on you and you just can't seem to do anything about it, and you can't stay away from her even though you do your best, and your mind is all a mess from it. You promise yourself to never see her again and wind up at her door a minute later. She has you on the Killing Floor.") The songs are about heart ache, dying (Now in the time of dying/I don't want nobody to moan/All I want my friends to do/Come and fold my dying arms/Whoa Whoa well so I can die easy/Whoa Whoa well so I can die easy/Whoa Whoa well so I can die easy/Jesus gonna make up my dying bed), and Motherless Children. Not exactly upbeat stuff, but so beautiful and mellow that this is an album you will listen to over and over. Nearly all of KJP's albums are terrific, but this is one of his best.

5 out of 5 stars His First and BEST.......2005-10-16

This is a musician's muscician at his best. The new listener is truly lucky, and will be treated to the most stunningly proficient slide guitar (stop what you're thinking -- this is not sloppy, roadhouse twang, but brilliantly interwoven guitar like you've never heard before) and utterly unique vocals. Even legendary guitarists like Leo Kottke have offered special praise for Phelps. Yet this is warmly accessible and engrossing music -- you'll be singing it in the shower -- and his original songs sound as if they've been handed down for a hundred years. Top 10 favorite of the 500 cds I own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent light acoustic blues..........2005-09-26

I have to thank Amazon for pushing Kelly Joe Phelps my way. I likely may never have heard of him otherwise. And what a find this artist is!

The recording is crisp and clear but it is stripped down. It is just Kelly Joe playing his slide guitar with the percussion from a stomp box. As others note, he is a masterful slide guitar player. His vocals are perfect for his musical style. It is a very mellow blues sound. The songs do not have a lot in the way of melody. It is not something you will likely sing along with (though you may certainly tap your toe to it). In fact, I still have not really focused a lot on the lyrics (who knows what I may be missing out on). But the sounds just wash over you. There is no real uptempo song or anything that you will really get down with. If you're looking to jam, this record isn't the one. But if you're feeling laid back or contemplative, there may be no better choice. If you are busy with other things, this album is excellent background.

For those that enjoy a mellow, stripped down acoustic slide guitar sound, Kelly Joe is a perfect find. Though some may bristle at the comparison, his sound reminds me of Ben Harper's acoustic lighter stuff (Disc 2 of Live From Mars, for instance). Of course Kelly Joe Phelps' sound is much more firmly rooted in the blues. Yet they share a folk similarity as well.

Really a perfect debut album. If you like the style, you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Now THIS is music.......2003-01-20

I'm very disappointed in what's happened to mainstream music these days, so I have been looking for CDs by artists I've always liked. "Firebird" did not let me down! I've always loved Pauls' natural style and was happy that he stuck with it, although I admit to being surprisingly pleased by the jazzy "Don't Stop the Carnival", which he pulled off well (one of my favorites on the album) and one I could see someone like Jimmy Buffett doing as well.

My very favorite was the Rusty Young-penned (and accompanied) "Across a Painted Sky". I could picture this gem on the outstanding Poco album "Rose of Cimmaron".

Other favorites are "There's a River", "Not Out of Mind" and "Do What You Do". While I don't personally see the other cuts as that strong, there's nothing here I disliked.

My main beef is with the production quality. It could have used a bit of "punch" in my opinion, and it's a bit muddy (too much midrange). The individual instruments blur in parts, and the vocals should have been crisper and more upfront.

I would have also liked to have heard MUCH more of Paul's guitar work, especially in those blistering/soulful song endings he was noted for with Poco. Some songs ended too soon and too weakly for me. But then, I'm, a huge fan of Paul's guitar work, which I don't think is as appreciated at large as it should be.

Overall, I was glad to make this acquisition and I love listening to "Firebird". I hope to get "Cantamos" soon, and also hope Paul puts out much more work.

3 out of 5 stars A decent record for POCO fans.......2002-05-04

I was attracted to this record by positive reviews I found here. And, although I failed to find sound samples at the web, I decided to order myself a copy. I was quite surprised with what I've heard on this CD. I found there nothing special to talk about. May be, except "Not out of mind" and "All the way to you" Instrumental. They both are quite good. I expected much more after reading other people's comments. Moreover Paul sings slightly out of tune at times which especially detracts me from this CD.

Please, don't get me wrong. It's a decent country rock music. But there are so many good recordings around and life is too short to listen to any music available. To be fair I need to mention I don't like most of POCO music. I think it's a kind of boring. But I love POCO S/T 1970 (excellent record!) and Crazy Eyes, 1973. Buy them if you didn't do it yet. If you feel the same about these records you may also like to get yourself Timothy B. Schmit latest CD "Feed the fire". Great music and performance!

... if you are POCO/Paul Cotton die hard fan, may be this is a record for you. Otherwise look elsewhere. IMO, Eagles stuff (including some solo recordings) is a good alternative.

4 out of 5 stars nearly good as poco.......2002-02-10

I just happen to fine this by looking to see if poco was still around what a find if poco can come up with a new cd this good we will be lucky if you like poco you will like this too

    5 out of 5 stars Firebird.......2002-01-21

This CD rocks-when I first got it I played it for days. I saw Poco in Grand Junction CO in July 2001-they played alot of songs from this CD. I am a old Poco fan-saw them when I was 13 at the Fillmore East-in the Village before it closed, & saw them many times in concert as a teenager etc. Their music is tight & its timeless-Paul is an excellent guitar player & seeing him play one knows he just has that knack. I am looking foward to his next CD/-Firebird is well worth the listen.

Rail was another one of those better-than-average 80's bands that somehow fell through the cracks. They played the kind of melodic hard rock that was so popular at the time, and seemed to make all the right moves (recording with Heart vocalist Ann Wilson, touring with Van Halen), but never achieved the success they deserved.

Fortunately the Dynasty record label reissued their early albums on CD for the first time in 2001. The Arrival Special Edition reissue contains the complete Arrival album plus plenty of bonus material - live tracks, early Rail & Company recordings, demos, etc. All songs have been digitally remastered, and sound terrific.

Rail is a band worth discovering. If you're a fan of 80's rock, particularly bands like Night Ranger, Aldo Nova, White Sister, and Autograph, chances are you'll find Rail to be right up your alley.

If you're looking for pseudo blues with a bunch of Top 40 polish, this isn't for you. However, if you have an appreciation for blues at its roots, played the way it was meant to be played, then you need to take a look (or listen). It's edgy ... a little rough ... and certainly not overly complicated. It's simply a very nice piece of work by a hard-working group fronted by a very talented musician.

Griffith shines on his current release, just like a brand new sheet of the CDs namesake. Aluminum will prove to be a classic from the guitarist in the Cowboy Mouth camp. 11 well crafted compositons make this CD a sleeping giant and a great accomplishment to seperate Griffith from the his previous work with both the Red rockers and Louisianas Cowboy Mouth. My favorite tracks are Southern Girls, Watered Down, Good News on the Way, and Keep Me Comin' Back(a great tune that brings back influences of the mid seventies in a good way). Nevertheless, each song has it's own character and are all great in each its own right. If this is what we are to expect from Griffith, a CD full of curve balls and changes-ups, there's no telling what the follow up will be like and I can't wait....RG

This group is awesome to listen to live and or via recording. I have had the pleasure of experiencing both. Their sound is eclectic, but if I were to give it a title it would be jazz fusion.

I picked up a sample CD in a {ATL} Little Five Points Starbucks and fell in love with the cut "Don't Fall Too Fast." I bought the CD and found every cut as enjoyable. "Don't Fall Too Fast" is part of the soundtrack for the book, "Ghettoway Weekend." Ghettoway Weekend

5 out of 5 stars Freshest Sound In Years.......2006-12-09

From start to finish this band is awesome. Steve Wright's guitar has all of the range from Metheny to Santana to Page and Hendrix. Kim Leachman's voice is one of the purest and most grabbing voice since Phyllis Hyman. SHe has the range to sing Jazz to Gospel and Rock! The songs are not filler at all.
"You Move Me" is a tour de force- The tension and release are gripping. "Falling Flower" has such great rhythms. "Good Ole' Days" is the song of reminisence. This is not an album for those who want commercial ditties! If you like music the way it was made in the '70's- This is for you: Sounding like a live recording, written, recorded and produced by the band.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely magical, lush, and innovative sounds.......2006-08-11

After hearing this band, you'll want to book the next flight to Atlanta.

This quartet is a breath of fresh air, blending Jazz, Neo soul, rock, R & B, and other more esoteric influences together to create a sound they call "Jazz -n- roll", but you'll call it "amazing".

Kim Leachman's silky, intimate vocals dovetail beautifully into Steve Wright's stirring ballads, yet soars with power on the album's more uptempo arrangements.

You need only listen to tracks like "You Move Me" and "Good Ole Days" to understand that you have discovered an incredible musical treasure in Days Ahead.

      3 out of 5 stars ...and 1/2 ... A nice introduction to Redd Stewart.......2006-03-14

Playing Time - 27:31 -- Dedicated to keeping the music of Redd Stewart alive, this album offers eleven songs recorded by the famous western swing musician between 1947-1974. Most famous as a vocalist with the well-known and popular Golden West Cowboys, Redd co-wrote (with fiddler/accordionist Pee Wee King) the hits "Tennessee Waltz," "Bonaparte's Retreat," and "Slow Poke." Of course, the former was also a big hit for Patti Page in 1950. The second hit launched Kay Starr to stardom. It might've been nice if the last of the three would've also been included on this compilation. The Golden West Cowboys appeared regularly on the Grand Ole Opry and on a regular Knoxville radio show. Their electric instrumentation and fancy outfits were a big hit at the Opry. Steel guitarist Roy Ayres once referred to Redd Stewart as "the glue that held the Golden West Cowboys together into a tight musical unit." Other band hits were in 1952 with "Silver and Gold" (not included here) and in 1954 with Rod Morris' "Bimbo"(included on this CD).

One must remember that post-war country music was striving to reach the pop market, and many of these Acuff-Rose songs are now considered as appealing "crossover" hits that sold well. Thanks to publisher Fred Rose, many of Hank Williams' hits were polished and popularized. On this sampler, Redd sings Hank's "Cold, Cold Heart." Besides being a singer and songwriter, I didn't realize that Redd was also a pianist, guitarist, and fiddler. And he's the sole writer of "I Remember," "Sunshine Over the Hill," and "Dreaming Again" on this CD.

Henry Ellis Stewart was born on May 27, 1923 in Tennessee, and then the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky. Learning numerous instruments and dropping out of junior high, Redd had his own band (The Prairie Riders) by the time he was about 14. He joined the Golden West Cowboys in 1937 (when Eddy Arnold was vocalist). Drafted into the Army, Redd wrote "A Soldier's Last Letter," which Ernest Tubb recorded in 1944. When Redd returned to the Golden West Cowboys at the end of WW II, he became the band's vocalist, as Arnold had gone solo. Redd married and started a family in 1946. In 1947, the band moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and they had a show on WAVE-TV until 1957. Redd continued touring with Pee Wee, and he also appeared in various movies. On August 2, 2003, Redd Stewart died at the age of 80.

I would've liked this CD to be about twice as long with such other hits as "A Soldier's Last Letter," "Tennessee Tears," "Tennessee Polka," "Slow Poke," "Silver and Gold," "You Belong to Me," "Busybody," "Changing Partners," and "Backward, Turn Backward." At only 27.5 minutes, it's over much too quickly and leaves us wanting more. Yet, it's still a nice introduction to Redd Stewart, and the CD jacket includes lyrics and some splendid historic photos. I'm told that Redd's youngest son, Bill, took over his music business, and has plans for future releases including many of the songs mentioned above. In 1972, Redd Stewart was inducted as a charter member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Bandleader Pee Wee King was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1974, and a movement is currently in place to urge Redd Stewart's inclusion also. See www.reddstewart.com for details. 5 out of 5 stars This collection proves what a tallent Redd was.......2005-09-01

Redd Stewart wrote songs straight from his heart, with beauty, thoughtfulness, often humor, and always unflinching integrity. That fact is made evident on this lovingly compiled cd, which contains a treasury of some of Redd's favorite compositions, and many of his most beloved works.
Redd was not only a fantastic writer, but also a wonderful singer. I liken his voice to warm molasses dripping off of hot biscuits. His voice rings with soulful sincerity, tenderness and wit. All of these qualities can be found in the title track, "I Remember", a lovely little song that is sure to bring a smile to the lips of any listener. As on all the songs featured here, Redd's gift for crafting a superb melody is evident on this song.
The second track, "Bimbo", is an absolute delight. You're sure to be left singing the chorus for hours after the song ends. Whoever could resist this little gem of a song!
"Having Second Thoughts", again, has a highly singable melody, and as always, Redd's vocal is top-notch. A song of lost love, it is sure to impress.
"Sunshine Over the Hill" is a wonderfully optimistic song, with a bit of a soul element thrown in for good measure. The following track, "My Home Is the Dust of The Road", soars with a glorious string arrangement underlying Redd's superb vocal.
What can I possibly say about "Tennessee Waltz" that hasn't already been said time and time again? It's a simply superb song that may leave a tear in your eye. Again, it's Redd's absolute integrity in his delivery of this song that makes it so fantastic.
"Banjo" is a wonderful story song sure to draw in the listener. "Dreaming Again" is another love song that you'll be singing all day, while "Cold, Cold Heart" exhibits a longing quality that makes it timeless.
"Talk To The Angels" is so tender and vulnerable that it will break your heart, and the closing track; the delightful "Bonaparte's Retreat" may have you dancing like the song's characters!
Redd's timelessness as a songwriter, and the absolute beauty of both his songs and his voice are showcased beautifully in this sterling recording! I for one look forward to many more albums such as this to commemorate Redd's music. This lovingly compiled cd is proof positive that the man and his music are truly unforgettable.
