Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Released in 1992, Waits's soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's quirky Night on Earth is built around a recurrent theme reminiscent of Rain Dogs and manipulated into moods that reflect the cities in which the movie's various stories are told. Banjo and accordion are used to great effect to evoke the three European cities. Elsewhere, marimba and other percussion that Tom Waits was using on his "official" recordings at the time are well suited to the darkness and humor in Jarmusch's stories. The two new songs written by Waits and partner Kathleen Brennan stick to the same instrumental blueprint, but have little to commend them to a place in the pantheon of Waits's songs. As accompaniment to the movie, this music works; as a stand-alone recording it is a long-haul listen. --Rob Stewart

Tom Waits is the kinda guy that makes eclectic music with a lot of experimenting, and with experiments, one can fail as easily as succeed. This means that on one Tom Waits album you can find true gems, songs that reset the bounadries of music, next to other stuff that is... well, just not so exiting. The same goes for artists like Nick Cave and Current 93. It is both their weakness and strength but at the end, this eclectic aproach to their music must be applauded and embraced, for only true artists have the guts to go all the way, and in the process, sometimes prevail and some other times fall flat on their face.

Since "Swordfishtrombones" (1983) Tom Waits has left the smokey piano-in-a-remote-bar tunes behind and started experimenting with less obvious instruments like the marimba, banjo, organ and harmonium. Some songs prevail and become recognizable "Waitsian music", others just "are what they are", this is the way things go.

But here is the soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch' movie "Night on earth" and for Tom Waits it is surprisingly even from A to Z. Besides that, it's also remakebly low-key.
The string of sixteen musical tracks (of which three are with vocals) play like one big song with each track being a variation on the former and the next. The three songs beautifully blend in with their non-vocal surroundings and the result is an moodful piece of nightmusic.

Not many soundtracks can be enjoyed all on their own if you haven't seen the movie. Most musical tunes are too much connected with the images they accompanied. But Tom Waits has the adventage of being a musical craftsman for many years so he is able to create a atmospherical piece of music that is perfect for the film and at the same time can pretty much stand on its own.

And listen for a moment to the man himself, humming "In the spring the weeds will show that he brought back the only rose / and he gave it to his girl on the other side of the world." into your left ear.
"Night on earth" is both in image and sound a tale well told.

Ralph Carney's influence is all over this film music.......2005-06-21

Where's earth when you know Ralph Carney's influence on an album. Check out recent music that turns sidewalks into quicksand and reverts C notes into D double flat. Carney did some of his best work with Tom Waits as is heard on this album. There are few multi-instrumentalists who don't get lost and it's cause they're building the road without the lines and the roadsides ebb. If you like their collaboration on this album, I recommend checking out more of Ralph's music.

Typically Atypical Tom Waits Album.......2004-02-13

The music has a repetitiveness I like, a constantly moving theme, like a monster tramping around in the darkness. These are not pop tunes but mood music. Variations give it an alternately boozy barroom feel or a Twilight Zone paranoia. The two versions of the sung "Good Old World"-one brutal and bulldoggy, one sentimentally in the cups-are both keepers, reminiscent of the parallel versions of "Innocent When You Dream" on Franks Wild Years. "The Other Side of the World", the only other track with lyrics, is a bridge between the Franks Wild Years and Black Rider albums, with lots of that lost, old world, Brothers Grimm mood. It's one of my favorite Waits tunes, and full of his new love for Kathleen Brennan.

3 and 1/2 Stars - Interesting For Fans.......2002-08-25

Night On Earth is a mostly instrumental recording from Tom Waits. The songs are mostly in the vein of his recent four studio albums at that time (Swordfishtrombones through Bone Machine - particularly the latter album and Rain Dogs), in that they feature his typically quirky percussion and wind instrument soundscapes - his "junkyard orchestra." The album's motif is quite nifty: Waits has crafted a main theme that changes and morphs according to the different cities that they represent in the movie - from the raging electric guitar of the Los Angeles theme to the beautiful stringed instrumentals of the later tracks. These instrumentals are fairly typical of Waits, and are good as far as they go. Imagine Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, or Bone Machine without vocals, and you have a pretty good idea of what you're getting. There are also three songs with vocals. These feature Waits's typically wacky and intimitable lyrics, and are performed in a calmer, more soothing way than his other current material of the time (Bone Machine.) This album seems like it would work best as a backdrop for the movie (which I haven't seen), than as a stand-alone product. Still, it has its charms in the latter context as well. Reccommended for Waits fans (though you should have his other albums before you pick this one up), and fans of the movie.

Haunting.......1999-02-07

Waits' soundtrack to this 1992 Jarmusch film is at times haunting, beautiful, deranged, aggravating, and amusing. Worth a listen by any Waits fan. Includes 3 vocal performances that rank among his best - particularly the waltz "Good Old World" and its instrumental equivalent.

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

One very noticeable quality of this CD is the remarkable dynamic range of the choir: performing a cappella throughout, their training and commitment allows them to sing through the entire dynamic spectrum from pianissimo to fortissimo with all the gradations in between, thus giving the music, which is uniformly serene, even greater variety than is inherent in its several nationalities and styles. Victoria's "O magnum mysterium" has just the right spooky piety while the same text, set by the contemporary composer Morton Lauridsen, remains faithful to antiquity while injecting some new colors. Rachmaninov's flavorful "Blazen muzh" reaches a fine intensity; the crescendo and de-crescendo in Randall Thompson's six-minute meditation on the single word "Alleluia" is beautifully handled; Barber's vocal arrangement of his "Adagio for Strings," is, as ever, gorgeous, and Tavener's "Song for Athene" is one of his least annoying works, handsomely sung here. Schoenberg's somewhat thorny "Friede auf Erden" makes one sit up and think twice, while Gorecki's "Totus Tuus" remains a simply ravishing meditation on the Virgin Mary. Works by Elgar and Delius round out the program. The accompanying notes by conductor Llewellyn announce that he hopes that the singers are "contributing to Peace on Earth" with this CD, and while that's quite a goal, what I can tell you is that the 65 minutes of music here is intensely calming and floats above and through the listener. A glorious CD which makes a great gift for a friend---or to yourself. --Robert Levine

Cold Porridge.......2005-07-15

The choral singing is crude and sloppy throughout this album. The whole product has the sound and look (is that an alien on the cover?) of something hastily and cheaply produced. Indeed, opportunism seems to have ruled over musicianship, as it appears the product was rushed to market to coincide with the outbreak of war in Iraq. Grant Llewellan is a fine musician and capable of producing so much more. What went wrong? Are the musicians in Boston just not up to snuff, or is the board and administration just painfully parochial? This is an ensemble that became leaders in baroque music under Christopher Hogwood. So what makes them think they should be performing Schoenberg, Barber, Delius and Gorecki?

Morten Lauridsen's chill-provoking 'O magnum mysterium' brought me to this project after hearing it on public radio at 2AM. Choice of material, quality and sensitivity of performance, and Grant Llewellyn's masterful direction make this a 'must have'.
I rarely buy choral music, but this one I will give at Christmas with a wish for the 'Peace' this music inspires.

THE BEST VIENNA BOYS CHOIR CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!.......2005-06-01

This wonderful collection of Christmas music is especially good! Many pieces are very well known standards, and have been rewritten in ways that keep the music fresh, interesting and new! Every holiday season (and even throughout the year) this CD is played by our family quite a bit! [I may be a little biased, since my 12 year old son from Cincinnati, OH is one of the boys singing in most of the songs!] It is awesome!!

Here again is a Christmas collection from Clare College that will easily find its way to the top of your list. The mixed male and female choir is accompanied by an orchestra whose excellence is manifest in it perfect coordination with the voices throughout. All the arrangements capture your soul and bring you into a dimension of Christmas not found elsewhere. If giving this as a gift, make sure to buy one also for yourself!

This CD is absolutely beautiful. I can't bear to put it away after the holiday season is over! The voices of the Clare College Singers, accompanied by the orchestra blend together to make a heavenly sound. The songs are so gentle and almost mystical. I discovered John Rutter and the Clare College Singers by listening to the local classical music station, and fell in love with their unique sound. "Shepherds Pipe Carol" is one of my favorites, but all of the songs are wonderful on this CD. I also purchased "The Holly and the Ivy" (also with the Clare choir and John Rutter), and it is beautiful too. 5 stars is not enough. If you enjoy gentle, spiritually uplifting Christmas music, buy this CD. You won't regret it.

Delicious Rutter carol arrangements with beautiful pure singing by Clare College Singers of Cambridge, England.

I was delighted to find "Carols from Clare" which includes 11 of the 12 recordings of my Capitol International Series LP recording , "Christmas in Cambridge, " featuring the Clare College Singers and Orchestra, Rutter as arranger.NEVER THOUGHT I'D FIND !!! It has been my FAVORITE Christmas holiday recording for 19 years. Only piece missing is "Of the Father's Love Begotten" which I will be searching for, of course, on another Rutter CD.

I fell in love with John Rutter's music when I heard his "Magnificat" performed locally. I by chance heard the first selection on this cd- one of two he wrote himself- and bought it just based on that one tune. I am of the mind that you can't own enough Christmas music because you'll want variety. This cd, and others from the Clare or Cambridge collection, is not about "Mama kissing Santa" or a red-nosed reindeer. It's about the magic of Christmas and the reason we have celebrate a birth in a manger. Of course like any great sacred music, even athiests will love the beauty of it!

Great old standards and some new stuff thrown in from jolly ole England. Wonderful selection and performance. Great addition to holiday collection.

Ahead of it's time!.......2007-01-19

Night on Earth is an awsome album. It's a perfect blend of brit-pop with very catchy synth lines and It is a step up from their first release. Great vocals and guitars with a lot of addicting melodies. If you like their previous album you will love this one the only difference is more keyboard lines and better sound production. This album is ahead of its time and no other band could ever capture their amazing sound.

This is by far the best album i bought in 2001. I luv every tune from first to last. Greatly arranged, beautiful lyrics and songlines that make u melt down. I am big fan of New Order, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Heaven 17 and other bands of that style. And this album is really building a bridge between those artists. From soft and moody to powerful and strong, from breakbeats to guitars and pianos - its all in the game! You mabye know those records u would take with u on a lonesome isle where u have stranded?! Well, lemme say: THIS WOULD BE THE ONE CD OF MY 1000 CD Collection i would choose. Give a try and support one of the best bands in the scene. You wont regret it i promise!!! :0)

Same old draggy formula.......2001-07-27

I must say, after their impressive debut album, this is rather a disappointment. While the debut album was full of strong melodies, they have somewhat lost it here. And they are still using the same formula, low-key, monotonous love songs. The vocals seem neither going up nor down. What adds to the boredom is that the choruses are also sung by just the lead vocalist, without any backing vocals. None of the songs are menorable here, except for the slow version (wrongly titled as acoustic version) of "Monday Morning 5:19". Well, if this goes on to the 3rd album, I am not going to buy them anymore. But why 3 stars ? Well, I think I am still hooked to their sweet tunes, although getting a bit bored.

This is one of the most original and musically satisfying Christmas programs on disc. And it features some of the most characterful and proficient ensemble singing you'll find anywhere. It's not that the music is obscure--in fact, most of the texts and/or tunes are familiar. From early American settings of "While shepherds watched" and "The Apple Tree" to traditional Austrian and English carols such as "Still, still, still," and "Greensleeves" (sung to different-than-usual words), we're treated to outstanding arrangements (by Paul Hillier) and often surprising variations of tunes we thought we knew. In several cases--"While shepherds watched" and "Hark! The herald angels sing," for example--the familiar texts are sung to completely different melodies. Highlights include original carols by Charles Ives and Jean Sibelius, and a starkly beautiful setting of "There is no rose" by Hillier. --David Vernier

This is a wonderful collection of Carols from around the world, beautifully performed by the Theater of Voices. I don't know what CD the first reviewer heard, because this one doesn't contain strident voices - the choir is very well blended, and the soloists are outstanding. I highly recommend it.
It is hard to choose best tracks, as they are so varied and well done, but my personal favorites are Gaudete, Personent Hodie and the four german tracks. The women's choir does especially well on Still, O Himmel, authentically capturing the sound of an Austrian choir.

Dazzling Sound.......2003-10-25

A thrilling collection of carols, mostly new to me, and beautifully sung. Listen to the first sample, Read's "Shepherds," to see what I mean. This has my favorite rendition of "Personent Hodie" (from Piae Cantiones). I now watch for more recordings by Paul Hillier and his ensembles.

Not your generic Christmas album.......2002-12-01

This has become one of my favorite Christmas discs. An unusual selection of carols, lovely arrangements (Shepherd's Star is stunning!), and the human voice the only featured instrument. Well worth the purchase

Bad performances, OK repertoire.......2002-10-21

Most of the reviews of this CD focus on the diverse repertoire performed on this recording. The diversity of repertoire on this CD, unfortunately, does not make up for the absolutely HORRIBLE singing given by the choir.

The choir's sound is often very strident, vowels are sometimes strikingly spread, the sopranos sing the correct pitches sometimes, etc. The first thing I was struck with when I listened to the first CD track was how nasal sounding the choir's tone was and how they were not in tune with each other. The choir's lack of attention to tuning and balance is mostly illustrated in the faster, rhythmic pieces, when the choir barrels through each selection with about as much attention to musicality as a dog might at dinner time. Even the slower pieces, though, are significantly unbalanced, and sung with a shrill timbre.

This is one of the worst choral CDs in my collection...soon to be OUT of my collection.
