French music always possessed the unique charm of French culture and sophistication. This CD in the Ultra-Lounge series celebrates some of the greatest French tunes of the 1950s and 1960s; and many of these numbers sport a jazzy flair that will leave you wanting more! Just one listen to this CD proves it.

The CD opens with the magnificent "I Love Paris" performed by Sam Butera & The Witnesses. The drums, percussion and horns all come together to produce a suave and elegant instrumental track that fits perfectly as an opener to this album. The French standard "Milord" shines with Les Baxter's touch; the piano carries the bulk of the musical arrangement and the male chorus adds to the beauty of this classic French ballad. "Valentina" is another special number; "Valentina" uses horns, drums and percussion to let Elmer Bernstein & The Swinging Bon Vivants bat this one straight out of the proverbial ball park! Love that piano solo, too! Awesome! In addition, "C'est Magnifique" sports Nelson Riddle's elegant touch as the horns and string shine to make this ballad magical.

"April In Paris" gets the royal treatment by The Mighty Accordion Band; their accordion playing gives us another perfect number performed without a single superfluous note. The accordion is certainly associated with classic French ballads of the 20th century; so it comes as not surprise that this number fits well into the track set. Indeed, all the tracks on this CD flow together very, very well.

Another track worthy of special mention is "The Poor People Of Paris (Jean's Song);" this number was written partly by the great Marguerite Monnot who wrote songs for such immortal greats as Edith Piaf. The piano, horns, percussion and strings all combine to make this number absolutely stunning. It also has that elegant early 1960s/late 1950s elegant flair that captures the essence of all things French: Haute Couture, Love and a certain élan that you just can't find anywhere else on the planet!

"La Vie En Rose" is performed by Sam Butera & The Witnesses; this is the only track on the CD that slightly disappoints me because I can't quite go for the emphasis on the horns in this arrangement. Nevertheless, the melody remains very beautiful and the artists perform it flawlessly. I guess "La Vie En Rose" will be a personal judgment call on this CD.

"C'est Si Bon (It's So Good)" features an organ and a male chorus; and "I Love Paris" features the bongo drums and percussion to infuse this number with a Latin beat. I think this method works very well. "Can Can Can" ends the CD's musical numbers with that classic French "Can Can" melody. This number immediately brings to mind those beautiful young ladies dancing the Can Can while kicking their legs up high over their heads. This terrific musical arrangement gets help from the flute and the xylophone as the horns carry the melody. Beautiful.

The last "hidden track" by Renzo Cesana is pure filler; but they should have ended this CD with the musical track entitled "Can Can Can." There's also the voice of a young lady with a beautiful French accent occasionally introducing a number on this album--as if the numbers needed any introduction whatsoever! I didn't like this, obviously, so I will make this a four star review instead of a five star review. Sorry, Ultra-Lounge!

The liner notes include the song credits and an essay about French musical standards by R. J. Smith. There are even three drink recipes so that you can offer your dinner guests a "French Poodle" the next time you serve cocktails before dinner!

Fans of French music and that late 1950s/early 1960s sound will thrill to this CD. People who want to enjoy well executed French instrumentals will also enjoy this CD very much. I also recommend this for fans of easy listening music, lounge music and exotica.

I love the Ultra-Lounge series........2006-12-10

The sound quality of the Ultra-Lounge series is excellent, even though the songs were recorded mostly in the 50's and 60's. Capitol Records packs each CD with carefully chosen tracks consistent with the theme of the particular volume in the series. Many of the selections that appear here aren't available elsewhere, either because the original album on which the song appeared is out of print, or because the song was issued as a single and never collected in an album. A few 'previously unreleased' tracks also appear here. This series is a wonderful introduction to the music of a by-gone era, and each album includes detailed notes on each track (artist, writers, date recorded, how released, etc.). I heartily recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this type of music.

A Mini Trip to the Paris of the 50s and 60s in a Jewel Case!.......2006-03-28

For whatever reason, I avoided this entry in the Ultra-Lounge series like the plague. In fact, I bought nearly every other volume BEFORE "A Bachelor in Paris" and waited until the last second to add it to my collection and complete the series. What did a French spin on my beloved lounge music have to offer me? The whole idea just did not sound all that appealing - I've never even fantasized about visiting Paris! Still, with few entries left to buy, I finally picked up "A Bachelor in Paris" and boy am I glad I did!

The music is jovial and fun, with a continental flair that evokes not the actual Paris but rather a fictional, idealized Paris of the jet-set 1950s and 60s. The Paris for lovers, the romanticized Paris of quaint cafes and glowing nightlife is here, conveniently preserved on disc to visit anytime you need to escape the reality of everyday life. More than any other entry in the Ultra-Lounge series, "A Bachelor in Paris" evokes a celebratory atmosphere - a mini-vacation in a jewel case where the locals are friendlier, the wine ever flowing, and your love faithfully always by your side to squeeze and caress at will.

The woman who pops up between every couple of tracks is quite amusing and helps perpetuate the illusion that listening to this disc is like taking a guided tour of Paris in the 50s and 60s. How sublime!

So, in parting, my final thoughts to anyone who has yet to complete their Ultra-Lounge collection, like me, should absolutely pick up a copy of "A Bachelor in Paris." The music is fun, the atmosphere is romantic and magical, and the entire compilation ranks among the best, most cohesive discs in the Ultra-Lounge series!

This CD is essential for the serious Ultra Lounge collector. It sets the mood for circa 50-60s French-American genres movies, i.e., An American in Paris, Paris When it Sizzles, etc. A must have. Great for entertaining, too.

These are the finest versions of the 3 Rhapsodies ever put on CD. Even better than the composer's own. Conductor Schwarz has a long term relationship with the composer and it clearly shows. He leads the wonderful Seattle Orchestra through ethereal and heavenly moods and sonics on all the compositions here and the accoustic in The Seattle opera was made for this. The Koch sound engineers provide SUPERB sound with great depth, clarity, wide dynamic range and rich warm textures. I don't think a better sound stage could be provided no matter what the music. Simply uplifting. The rest of the CD pieces are: Symphony #38 (M Soul Is A Bird/Lullaby) and Concerto #10 for piano, trumpet and strings. Also done as well as can be. This Cd is a must for fans of Hovhaness and his Armenian roots.

Brannan Lane, Nashville resident and citizen-of-the-global-musical-village, returns to his roots on Caribbean Dream II: Dreaming Again, the sequel to his acclaimed debut, Caribbean Dream. Once again, this multi-faceted and extremely talented (and humble)
musician delivers the goods: smooth tropical ambience, cyber-sultry island rhythms, and
warm sunny melodies wafting in like gentle ocean breezes. Also much like his debut,
Brannan mixes up tempos, moods, and textures, ranging from Richard Bone-like tropical
lounge-jazz (the opening track, "Congo Island") to mysterious and haunting ambient
pieces ("Sea Yourself" and its somewhat tribal reprise, "Sea Yourself Too") to
island-flavored rhythm-fests ("Until Then [jungle mix]" or the reggae-tinged "Island Hop"
and "Reggae Knights"). The album also includes a new version of the track "Caribbean
Sea" from the first Caribbean Dream release. Brannan even honors us with his first
outright vocal tune, the album closer "Thinkin' Mon." As you can infer from the track's
title, this is the most outright reggae number on the album, and what can I tell ya - I've
spoken to Brannan on the phone and I sure as hell don't recognize his voice on this song!
I'm not going to tell you he's got Bob Marley's pipes, of course. But what the hell - the
guy is having a blast on this cut (that's not hard to tell) and ya just gotta get in the swing
of it, mon!
Merely as a caveat to those of you who detest nature sounds, they are abundant on this
fine album (especially birdsong and waves, as you'd expect, along with some nocturnal
insects). Myself, I love environmental textures on CDs like this one. For me, they add just
the right amount of "being there."
I raved about the original Caribbean Dream when it came out, and I'm even more
enthusiastic about this follow-up. Brannan's recording abilities (from a technical
standpoint) have grown exponentially with each releaser. Engineering is flawless,
percussion is expertly recorded and mixed, and his control over his array of keyboards has
never sounded better. The first Caribbean Dream was a lot of fun but also a little on the
"not-quite-ripe" side. Now that Brannan Lane has matured and "aged," much like fine
wine, the musical "flavors" are more complex and more satisfying. Not that this CD isn't
still all about havin' a great time. That it is for sure. So, if you're looking for music that
brings to mind lazing on the beach, sipping on a cold beverage perhaps (heaven forbid it's
alcoholic in nature, of course), and listening to the sounds of waves and wildlife, this here
album will serve as your round-trip ticket to the Islands, mon. Now, take off those shoes

As a founding member of the early-'90s psychedelic band Spacemen 3, Jason Pierce and bandmate Sonic Boom, a.k.a. Peter Kember, proudly proclaimed they were "taking drugs to make music to take drugs by." These days Sonic pretty much adheres to his original credo, but Pierce has blasted off on an entirely different trip. OK, Spiritualized's droning chords, sedated melodies, and atmospheric passages don't exactly discourage stoners from toking up, but their music is far too emotionally involving to be called drug rock. Not that it's complex, exactly. Many of the group's songs revolve around endlessly repeated two- and three-chord progressions. But what the group is able to express in these simple structures is breathtaking. Some songs splash and spiral like slow-motion Spin Art, some ascend like rising mist, and still others reach the heavens via gliding strings and gospel choirs. Spiritualized is hands-down one of the most captivating, mesmerizing live bands since early Pink Floyd, and the double CD Live at Royal Albert Hall captures every violin quiver and guitar dribble with absolute clarity. On old Spacemen 3 tracks like "Walk with Jesus" and on Pierce's own "Electric Mainline" and "No God Only Religion," Spiritualized are truly celestial. --Jon Wiederhorn

Live albums, by and large, are a dime a dozen -- inconsequential souvenirs designed to placate fans awaiting new studio material, they rarely if ever shed new light on the artist in question; rarer still is their ability to approximate the energy and excitement of the concert setting itself. Spiritualized's transcendent Royal Albert Hall October 10 1997 is the proverbial exception that proves the rule, a revelatory two-disc collection which captures the group at the peak of their powers, somehow translating the hypnotic power and epic majesty of their live set onto vinyl. Rejecting the inane between-song stage patter common to most live performers, Jason Pierce instead weaves his music together into an unbroken tapestry of sound, casting a spell which ebbs and flows with narcotic beauty and intensity; even the most familiar selections (like "Shine a Light," "Take Your Time," and "Medication," all frequent inclusions on other Spiritualized live EPs and bootlegs) pulsate with new life, their melodies as likely to set off on a meditative drift as they are to erupt in blasts of white noise. Granted, Royal Albert Hall isn't a substitute for the experience of actually catching the group in the flesh -- what is? -- but like so few other concert LPs, it actually rises above its conceptual limitations, forever capturing a singular moment in time and space when Spiritualized was unquestionably the greatest rock & roll band in the world. i once declared after a spiritualized show that i no longer believed in the written word. i wanted the whole of life to be sensations from heaven, and nothing to be planted firmly on paper again. it took about three months to get over that, but the memory is still strong... this disc captures part of that for me, especially since i won't see a show like that again for a long time. take that by itself or with a grain of salt.

Spiritualized - 'Royal Albert Hall-October 10,1997'(Arista).......2004-10-28

Very good live audio document of the Spiritualized '97 UK tour to release while the group's fans await the arrival of their next CD.'Royal Albert...' sounded rather uplifting to me,especially on disc one with "Shine A Light","Medication",the outstanding "Walking With Jesus"(maybe the 2-CD release's best track)and "Take Your Time".Sorry to say that somewhere on disc two,'Royal...' wears a bit thin.That's okay,not EVERY tune can be great.STILL a decent find,as the listener gets to hear founder/guitarist/vocalist Jason Pierce and company crank out some fine psychedelic-like space drone.The two discs add up to a total of 95 minutes,an actual full-length concert.Should appeal to fans of My Bloody Valentine,Flying Saucer Attack,Spacemen 3,Amp and The Verve.

If you like Spiritualized..........2004-04-09

If you like Spiritualized then obviously you'll like this album. It offers so many songs, with hits such as "Electricity", "Medication", and "Walking with Jesus". All these songs sound just as good or better than their studio/album versions. Live at Royal Albert Hall was the first Spiritualized cd I got into. And will be a cd I will always come back to. So in the end, if you still can't decide what Spiritualized cd you want next, I extremely recomend this one for its diverseness, and for a successful Spiritualized journey.

A PERFECT LIVE WITHOUT FLAWS.......2000-07-14

it's totally different interpretations of the original songs from their albums! & both versions are perfect!u're gonna miss a lot if u think it's jsut another live album coz the live version of [broken heart] does break yr heart right away! this live album is as good as,maybe even better than LADIES&GENTLEMEN.......

Why did I buy this again?.......2000-07-05

I like Spiritualized a lot, but objectivity is more important here than awarding them with a good review merely because I'm partial to the band. This album is not very good. The first three songs are good, especially "Electric Mainline." The rest is an uninspired reading of the ...Ladies and Gents... album, and an overproduced one at that. With the exception of adding an orchestra on almost every song (READ: not very interesting), these songs sound exactly the same as the original studio versions. It doesn't even sound like a live album. Jason Pierce is usually meticulous; it would have helped to think LONG and HARD before unloading this on the public.

Once upon a time, a remix was an attempt by a producer to make a track more danceable--to pump up the bass, drop an infectious tambourine loop over the steady 4/4 rhythm, and add some echo to spark the crowd's buzz. But in the hands of the Intelligent Dance Music crowd--the style, pioneered by Warp Records, of applying dance-floor technologies to armchair music--the remix took on the in-joke mentality of a postmodern literary trickster. Tracks--not songs, tracks (if they started off as songs they inevitably got turned into tracks)--were pulled inside out, pushed through a filter that replaced beauty with noise and wrung it out to dry. The two-CD remix portion of Warp's 10th anniversary series takes this aesthetic as far as it can possibly go. This is contrariness squared. Oval applies his patented skipping-and-stripping CD methodology to Squarepusher's jittery drill and bass. Four Tet splices his disembodied reconstruction of a jazz rhythm section onto one of Aphex Twin's oddly effectless ambient works. Jim O'Rourke subjects one of Autechre's stop-start sonic mazes to his obsessively detail-oriented studio savvy. The result certainly has a hothouse quality to it, but hey, when you're not out on the dance floor, you've gotta work up a sweat somehow. --Jeff Salamon

Certainly not for the Casual Listener but essential for fans.......2004-02-20

To Celebrate Warp Records 10 year anniversary, they issued 3 double disc albums, detailing they're discography through the 10 years of the label ("Classics", "Remixes, "Influences"). This issue (Remixes) takes existing Warp classics, and lets loose some Warp & other artists to rebuild the tracks. With the exception of a couple of tracks, virtually all the remixed tracks here are surprisingly downbeat, and wonderfully brilliant for it. "Plaid's" remix of "Autechre's - Vletrmx" is given the usual sparkling electronic melodic's we come to expect from Plaid. "Four Tet" smooth the edges off "Aphex Twin's - Untitled" track, turning it into sprawling instrumental greatness. "Stereolab's" reimaging "Boards of Canada's - Kid for today", with equally pleasing results. The only criticism that could be levelled at this release is that it's geared to Warp enthusiasts and requires extensive knowledge of the labels to get the best out of it. But as a definitive collection of remix work, this'll take some beating.

what a tripp.......2001-06-11

This album is a wild ride, and I love every minute of it. First off lets start with the cover design. This is something I see as very crucial to a good and complete album. A good cover should in a sence bring a visual representation to what the music sounds like. In this case it does so to a T. This sounds like the cover. Hard high tech with manipulation, which makes the fammilar, alien. This is a collection of some of the Warp lebels greatest remixes. The music selection is great. It ranges from hardcore IDM, to flat out experimental, to funk..... Well anyway eclectic is cool and what Warp is all about. I reccomend this to anyone into the Warp label (which is obvious) But I also reccomend this to people that really enjoy experimental music and IDM becuase what you getting here are some heavly modulated and reconstucted songs and all are of the highest quality. The songs range from having a very mechanical sound to a very environemental texture and even having a sweet and almost innocent flavour! Despite the wild array of styles they all seem to sound like the cover looks which in my opinion is a true sign of a good album or collection.

Nice Subtle Mix For All.......2000-07-29

I am a big fan of comp and re-mix albums and this one definetely falls into a mix of it's own. Matador Records and Warp have come together to make a fairly decent album. Mostly ambient and low down tracks but very nicely arranged for sure. There are some nice heart racing break beat tracks, but for the most part laid back and spaced out. I would definetely reccommend this to anybody that likes good beats mixed with space age rythym

The BEST mixing the BEST.......2000-05-15

Out of the 3 box sets warp released, this is by far the one worth buying. Classics and Influences unfortunately showcased warp BEFORE they signed their good artists. But warp 10+3 doesn't dissapoint. Great remixes of great songs. Aphex, Autechre, Squarepusher, LFO, Plaid, Bogdan all remixing each others stuff. I especially like the remixes of aphex twin's and autechre's stuff, while the oval squarepusher mix fell way short. Yes the album may have some slumps, but it showcases the whole WARP crew in their full, and shows not only their capability to make the best music in the world, but the ability to adapt to others styles and make great mixes in the warp TRADITION. Favs are remix of SAWII #1, Plaid Veltmx, Bogdan mixing Autechre, among TONS of others. This isn't the best album ever, but it sure is a good buy for a two disc set. And bad vibes go out to one of the other reviewers who said warp is at its all time low. If you ask me, they are conforming perfectly with the times. The future holds some great releases.

An amazing.... thing........2000-04-29

First, Warp is by far the greatest, most innovative record label in the world, and I applaude them for everything they have brought into the world of music. As for the 10th Anniversary collection, the Remixes CD set was my personal favorite. It put new spins on some of the greatest works out there and I never get bored of listening to it. If you love anything off of Warp, you need the entire 10th Anniversary collection. It's essential. You don't know what you're missing.

This is a must-have for fans! of the past four decades of guitar-heavy head music, from '60's Quicksilver Messenger Service to '70s Television to '80s Rain Parade to '90s Spacemen 3. In the aughts it may be SUNTAN who burns the brightest.

First music for the Cybermen.......2004-11-05

The tracks on this CD are apparently off of stock music that the BBC had available in the early 60's. (You can even hear that the CD is copied off of LP tracks because of the occasional pop, but only if you listen with earphones.) Some of the tracks were used in the "Tenth Planet" and subsequent Cybermen stories of the 60's, including "Tomb". The CD is short, as are the tracks, but it is a rare example of early music used in Who.

Real metal music.......2003-07-26

For those who have ever seen the 60's Dr Who programs, they will know that aside from innovation in TV effects (people often forget that there was little to no no TV sci-fi in the 60's-80's, making Dr Who the innovator in 'how to do it'), but the music gets often overlooked. Here is a chance to appreciate the use of found sounds (playing off of a microphone stand) and synthesized sounds (the weird use of echoed drums and horns) that create the other-worldliness of the Tenth Planet.

Surface 10 - 'In Vitro Tide' (Din).......2006-11-15

Never knew that Surface 10 (which is more of a project, than a band) had this many releases out. I first discovered Surface 10 from the tune they have on the label Cleopatra's 'Space Box' 3-CD box set(see my review). 'In Vitro Tide' is noted as Dean de Benedictus's second effort, but I know I've seen like maybe at least three other Surface 10 titles. This is really good techno. Tracks I was most impressed with were "This Will Sting", the somewhat funky "Service 10 Rendered", the rhythmic "Of My Efforts" and the 12-minute "Defrag Harvest Nocturn(DHN)". Line-up: Dean de Benedictus-mixing,Phil Williams-guitar,Curtis Davis-bass and John Wells-sampling. Just might appeal to fans of The Orb,808 State,Art Of Noise and possibly Kraftwerk.

Strange, hypnotic and great.......2006-04-07

I can't really describe what this is. It's electronic music. But that's all i can say.

Some songs start very ambient but then comes some heavy drum sounds and strange noises surrounds you. There are samples from movies here and there.

"Farewell Microscapes" is very hypnotic and relaxing. After that comes "Of My Efforts" with strange drum rhythms, a groovy bassline and jazzy melodies. This is just an example of how many styles there are on In Vitro Tide.

This is very experimental music. If you think the record you just bought sounds like something you already have, then you should try this....
