5 out of 5 stars World Class Music from a World Class Talent.......2007-05-29

The great author James Baldwin once stated that "the artist has always been a disturber of the peace in some way." When we hear Nina Simone sing with composed outrage such songs as "Mississippi Goddam," and "Work Song," in protest against the overt racism practiced during the 1960s in the southern U.S., we know that hers was indeed a politically charged consciousness. The singer's recording of "Mississippi Goddam" was so controversial when first released that Simone would come to attribute the decline of her career in the U.S., and her relocation to France, to the fallout that followed. However, the 20 songs gathered here on FEELING GOOD, THE VERY BEST OF NINA SIMONE, demonstrate that the greater range of her musical talents went far beyond social or political protest.

Trained as a classical pianist at the famed Juilliard School of Music, Simone was an extraordinary interpreter of song lyrics as well as of musical genres. In the title track of this CD, she draws listeners into an inspired celebration of life with a song that dozens of artists are now covering in 2007 (please note review of Randy Crawford's "Feeling Good.") She can croon seductively and vulnerably in songs like "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," "Ne Me Quitte Pas," and "I Put a Spell on You." And yet she can also go straight to church on the gospel presentations "Take Me to the Water" and "I'm Going Back Home." Talent of such amazing caliber doesn't pop up every decade. This generous sampling of Simone's genius makes one very glad she came along and gave the world as much as she could when she did.

4 out of 5 stars Musical Gumbo from a Class Act.......2007-04-06

I bought this CD right after seeing the Doolittle girl (American Idol 2007 favorite) perform "Feeling Good". That song hooked me! "Feeling Good" (soul), "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (pop), "I Put a Spell on You" (blues), "Love Me or Leave Me" (jazz) are my favorites and worth the price of this CD. "Mississippi Goddam" (awful) is the low point of this "disjointed" compilation disc. This CD is also interesting for Simone's excellent interpretations of Billie Holliday's classics, "Don't Explain" and "Strange Fruit". Stir in a little French a' la Edith Piaf, "Ne Me Quitte Pas", and gospel, "Take Me to the Water", and the listener has musical gumbo from one classy lady that defied all catagories.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2006-11-10

Trying to get to know Nina's music more and this was an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-02-04

My father was given this cd as a gift; not his cup of tea... I'll forgive him that, but this album changed my outlook on soul. More sophisticated than motown, more alive than Loussier. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Love Me or Leave Me" utterly gutting!

4 out of 5 stars every good boy deserves favour.......2007-07-10

in the 1960's and early 1970's the moody blues were in a league of there own for inspired, inticate and creative popular music. This album continued the high standard of there earlier albums. This album in SACD is superb and the standard of production is stunning and lends itself brilliantly to this remastering technology. It sounds as if the band is present and performing in front of you.

*The following comments are in regard to the bonus tracks on this release. To read my opinions on the original content of this album, check out my review under:
"Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" by The Moody Blues (Audio CD - 1997) - Original recording remastered

Here is what I enjoyed about each of these outstanding bonus offerings...

"The Story in Your Eyes" (Original version):
Either this was a slightly slowed-down version of the final version or the final version was speeded up a tad ... Either way, a nice job on the heavy mellotrons on the choruses. The vocals made the song sound like a BBC remake, featuring the original instrumental track. At the end of the track, you can hear a voice that sounds like Denny Laine chanting in falsetto (Ala "From The Bottom Of My Heart, I Love You" from "The Magnificent Moodies"), but it's hard to tell who's voice it really is! A really catchy version of this rockin' Justin Hayward classic. :)

"The Dreamer:"
This composition, featuring Ray Thomas on vocals, would have fitted nicely on his "Hopes, Wishes, And Dreams" album, as the music style sounds closer to his solo effort than a Moody Blues song ... Still, it's an impressive haunting and driving tune, and makes for a nice "Thomas Trilogy" on this release, along with his two "E.G.B.D.F." compositions, all unique in sound, but all fantastic in their own way. :)

*Something I forgot to add to my original review of this album was that the opening chant of "DESOLATION," from "Procession," would make for an amusing ring tone for a cell phone, if there isn't already a sound file of this available! Imagine hearing this on somebody's phone while waiting on line at the bank or grocery store?! :)

Just like the 1997 CD remaster of "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour," this Deluxe Edition also featured a topnotch remastering job! I would recommend this release to any Moody Blues fan or collector. Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)

1 out of 5 stars INTENSE re-mastering..........2007-04-24

This review is based on the CD portion of the disc only.

If you are hoping these "deluxe editions" will sound even better than the re-mastered discs of `97 you will be disappointed. The old re-masters sound much more pleasant to the ears than these "deluxe" discs. Doing a side by side comparison, using top of the line monitors, these "deluxe" versions don't come close to the last round of re-masters which breath much better. The "deluxe" versions have been once again aggressively compressed, which means, by the time you've reached the middle to later stages of the album (depending on the album), you may experience some ear fatigue. The sound is unrelenting and it changes the original dynamics. I felt like I was hearing a whole new mix, which is a sign of over compressing. Has the music industry gone compression mad? Or, were the Moodies worried that their back catalogue (the holy seven) lacked musical muscle, and super charging it with heavy compression is the answer? Or even both?

The bonus tracks were interesting to hear, but not really important unless you are a Moodies fanatic. The booklet's in this "deluxe" series were all a little redundant, you'll be reading a lot of the same text from booklet to booklet, and the picture selection was a bit lacking in imagination in my opinion. Also, it states in the booklet, there's a track 12 which wasn't to be found on my disc.

In conclusion, after hearing all of these "SACD Deluxe Editions," I'll be keeping my old (1997) re-masters, after all, they still look and sound great. Perhaps the other two layers of these "deluxe editions" will be rewarding, but if you still haven't bought any of these yet, you are way ahead of the game.

5 out of 5 stars Quadraphonic realized!.......2007-04-21

This gem from 1971 includes some of the Moody Blues best works. The stand-out cut for this hybrid SACD is the amazing, "Procession", in which the Moodies attempted to document the progression of music through the years. In stereo, it was always a revelation, but in surround sound the original quadraphonic mix is reproduced with exquisite clarity and definition. The song literally dances around the room. The entire album exudes new life through this new mix - however, the center speaker does not emit sound; only the four individual speakers (left and right front and left and right rear), plus the subwoofer. The unreleased bonus tracks are a welcome surprise, with the original version of, "The Story In Your Eyes" at an extra half minute added. It's more of a `free' mix towards the end sounding more like a tight `jam'. The Hayward/Thomas addition of "The Dreamer" is a pleasant song and this is the first time it has been available. Note that the bonus tracks are in stereo only; an unexplained mystery on an album mixed for multi-channels. Also note that the bonus song, "After you Came" listed on the booklet does not exist on the CD - a major faux-paus!

Please note that all Moody Blues Hybrid SACD's do not reproduce the front central channel - a result of the original quadraphonic tape mixing

5 out of 5 stars There's More...(We Hope) !!.......2007-04-14

I love this recording, and it's (at least) twice as good in Quadraphonic ! Thank you, Polygram ! If you're a Moodies fan, BUY IT ! 'Nuf said-you know you're getting a gem here...But you might not know this---- Where's the SACD re-issue in 5.1 of "Blue Jays" by Justin Hayward and John Lodge ? Still to come ? and soon (I hope) ? We need to make some noise, fellow fans...BECAUSE-It was briefly available as a Quadraphonic 4 channel reel-to-reel tape, just as all the Moody Blues albums through "Seventh Sojourn" except "Magnificent Moodies" (1st LP) and "In Search of the Lost Chord" (3rd LP) were. Well, ALL the Moody multi-channels have been re-issued as SACDs, so where's the re-issue in 5.1 of "Blue Jays" ? THIS ALBUM WAS THE BEST MULTI-CHANNEL RELEASE by ANY artist I'VE EVER HEARD ! Also, Ray Thomas' "From Mighty Oaks" was a matrix-encoded Quadraphonic LP record release, so there should be some discrete master tapes of that in the vaults, too...Let's hope we see SACD re-issues of both of these wonderful 'solo' releases, as well !

5 out of 5 stars Live Energy.......2006-08-31

First heard of Xavier only a few months ago when friends bought me a ticket to see him in concert in Brisbane, Australia. What a truly awesome performance, one man making such fine and energetic music. The combination of great beats, the unearthly sound of the Didjeridoo and his brilliant slide guitar work make Xavier, in my opinion, the best artist to have appeared in this the 21st century. His studio albums are great but this one really gives an indication of how much of an accomplished artist this man is. If you haven't seen him live yet, get this CD and if he is ever performing live in your area, do whatever you can to get tickets and see him, you won't be disapointed.

3 out of 5 stars Some Difference from Hotel Costes 6.......2004-01-01

I ordered this CD after seeing 5 star reviews at amazon.
It very well may simply be a matter of preferences, but I would definitely rate Hotel Costes 6, also compiled by Stephane Pompougnac, as excellent and worthly of 5 stars. However, in comparison, the Saks Fifth Avenue sound is not quite the same, with the exception of a few songs of the same flavour. This could have been intentional to differentiate it from the Hotel Costes series.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Milk Chocolate.......2003-11-12

Picture this: driving down the road in a convertable on a sunny fall day. The wind is rushing through your hair, and the temp is perfect enough to be wearing a light sweater. To the left you see the ocean, and you get a big ol' smile on your face. That's what listening to this CD is like. Far better than the previous Costes albums (which, if you know them, is saying TONS), this album delivers on all fronts. Not only does it present seemless jazz tunes with full vocals (track 4's "hoping"), but it also let's you get funky on more than one occasion. This is the definitive collection of electro-jazz-blah blah blah... get it! And yes, it's kind of cheesy that it's marketed through a department store, but who cares... you can't see the cover when it's playing in your convertable!

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2003-07-17

Well, I am a HUGE fan of Stephane Pompougnac and this album is, in my opinion, fantastic, just like the costes series. He doesn't disappoint. I especially love tracks 5-8, but really all the tracks are good, and different in their own way. Way cool!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection in the Costes Tradition.......2003-07-01

Stephane is a talented DJ and his compilations are not limited to those released as Hotel Costes collections . If you know the Costes series, this is an excellent addition to your music library.

I'am surprise to be the first one to rewiew this excellent CD. It's a Costes series but with a different name, but the music are always the same : good music!.Messieur Pompougnac here again make well his business. 14 traks without one to skip. De-Phazz, Charles Schillings, and many others (who are Toka Projec? with a very funny and nice version of Fallen Angels?).If you already bought Costes 1,2,3,4,5, dont'miss this CD, 67 minuts of high class d.j. club/music.

1 out of 5 stars I bought the wrong version.................2002-02-12

I was totally disappointed (it was my own fault sort of) that I payed good money for this CD and the version I wanted was not even on here!!! I heard the BEST version in Club "M" in Dublin, Ireland, I should of asked the DJ (who has always written songs down for me before as everyone knows we are way behind on the music scene over here) but I didnt and I saw this and thought for sure it would be on here and it is not. I know have this and another verson on my "euphoria" CD........ the one I really want I probably will never find...... It gives me goosebumps everytime I have heard it.. it is unlike any version on the radio or even what they have played in the clubs.

    5 out of 5 stars Erotical.......2000-07-26

I love this song (It Feels So Good),it is a very sensual song and it never wears on.

3 out of 5 stars AVERAGE DANCE TUNE, THAT GETS TIRED FAST........2000-07-14

Sonique the latest from the UK hit Top 10 on Billboard with this single.

This song however sounds like everything I have heard in the early 90s, though it has a catchy tune, and good vocals from Sonique, the song wears fast.

Also I feel she is copying that other Queen of Soul Tina Turner in her vocals, expressions, and the way she delivers this song. I feel this song really has no originality.

Though a good dance song for the clubs, if you are not going out dancing, no reason to buy it for the player....Save your five bucks and go out for a nice lunch in the park.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get sick of this! Play it over and over!.......2000-07-07

Awesome mixes. 4 versions, each one being different than the other.

I really enjoy listening to it. It's like one of those songs that can't get old. Like "Everything but the Girl" "Missing You."

BUY IT! You'll love it! I did!

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have CD.......2000-06-27

Sonique's "It Feels So Good" will not be a disappointment to your ears.

All four versions provide for excellent listening and club dancing. The serious remix (#3) contains great sounds, vocals, and beats.

    3 out of 5 stars Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some amazing songs.......2006-04-27

Del Amitri doesn't disappoint with this album. Several of the songs are as amazing as anything they ever offered fans: "She's Passing This Way," "Cash & Prizes," "Buttons on My Clothes," and my favorite, "Out Falls the Past," which features some wonderful background brass.

A shame they are no longer recording...

4 out of 5 stars It did _me_ good........2005-09-10

More techno-slick than their other albums, but still unmistakably the Dels. Techno-slick is only to be scorned when it's all there is, which isn't the case here. More sharp, dead-on lyrics, melancholy reappraisal, obsession, poignant sweetness (they'd probably hate me saying that, but there it is), oh-bugger-off humor and a disgusted rant framed by those melodies, that music, and Justin Currie's voice. Not just his voice but how he uses it. It's really a bloody shame the band wasn't more successful/popular, particularly in the States. They deserved to be, as I've heard others say (one of them was Russell Crowe). My one regret is that I came to the table too late to see them play live.

Most excellent songs: "Baby It's Me," "Out Falls the Past," "Drunk in a Band," "One More Last Hurrah," "Last Cheap Shot at the Dream," "Just Getting By," "Buttons on My Clothes." As you can see, most of the album. The other songs aren't bad, either.

I'd like to know why they named the CD "Can You Do Me Good?" I have a few ideas, but they're probably nowhere near the mark...

4 out of 5 stars Never mind the samples, there are some beautiful tunes here.......2004-10-04

I don't know of that many Del fans. That doesn't stop me from being one: they're one of my favourite adult alterna (or whatever you call them) rock bands with a flair for pop hooks that I don't find in a lot of 'hot' contemporary bands. 'Can You Do Me Good'establishes that faith. 'Twisted' was a great record, and the Gibson lines come back with "Cash & Prizes"...I don't know why very few people have mentioned that track on this review firum. "Buttons on My Clothes" is another great tune. The lyrical quality of Mr. Currie's sonngs have always been, well, lyrical, for lack of a better word. It's poetry, at its best. "Jesus Saves", for one, "Just Before you Leave", for another. Get hooked.

4 out of 5 stars solid power pop from underrated artists.......2003-08-23

I finally got my copy of this long-awaited CD. I was hoping for a US release, but to no avail. Del Amitri once again prove themselves to be possibly the most underrated band ever. The band cranks it up with "Drunk in a Band," a great head-nodding pub song. The stand out track in my opinion is "Buttons on My Clothes". It ranks among their best and in a perfect world, would have been everybody's favorite song of 2002. Lyrically, Justin Currie is once again at the top of his game. The man just cannot write a lame lyric. You can always count on Del Amitri for great ballads. Here, "She's Passing This Way" and "Just Getting By" are two more great chronicles in the long and sorry love life of Mr. Currie. Songs like "One More Last Hurrah" and "Last Cheap Shot at the Dream" are somewhat prescient in their foreshadowing the band's recent split from their US label. Too bad for the masses, but not if you're willing to dig a little deeper for the truffles. Note: If you're a fan of brit-pop like Oasis, Travis and Coldplay, buy this and every other Del Amitri CD. I guarantee you those bands were listening to the Dels when they were writing.

3 out of 5 stars My Favorite Band, But Not Their Best Work.......2003-04-04

This is a good Del Amitri CD, but it lacked something that I can't quite put me finger on. I think it's that a majority of the songs are simpy good and not great (a first!). However, if you're a fan (and I wish there were more of us out there, so that the Dels wouldn't be currently without a record label) you MUST buy this, even though it costs a little bit more. If you're just a casual listener and are looking for something beyond the obvious hits collections, go buy "Changes Everything".

    5 out of 5 stars Morricone's Masterwork.......2007-03-11

If you have only heard the U.S. release of this soundtrack, you will surprised at how much more enjoyable this one is. The recording quality is exceptional, and the tracks that are included here that you have not heard are well worth the extra money that this will cost you.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible re-mastering.......2006-09-14

There are a few pieces on here that are so clean, they sound like they were recorded last week (I actually thought track 1 was a re-recording for a minute). Yes, a few tracks are mono, but still of great quality. I've been dissapointed by "re-masterings" of other albums that just make the material a bit louder and tweak the EQ, but this is an absolutely top-notch job and it's obvious a lot of love went into this edition.

5 out of 5 stars Good music, but Ugly CD cover. .......2006-07-18

I already had the American release of "Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo", but wasn't happy how it cut out parts of the last song. That alone prompted me to buy this CD and I'm happy I did. If you can afford it, skip the American release and use a fistful of dollars to buy this import.

I guess there are just two types of soundtracks, those with guns and those that dig. This soundtrack has the gun.

My only gripe is that the cover is pretty bad. I didn't get the cover that's advertised, but the one I posted a picture of. There is no booklet, but you can't beat this music.

Maybe Arch Stanton can rest in peace now.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-01-31

I definitely recommend this recording for die-hard fans of Sergio Leone's masterpiece. It includes the music from all my favorite moments in the film, even the short songs that would have been easy to omit. In particular, there's "The Sundown", "Sentenza", "Padre Ramirez", "The Death of a Soldier", and especially--the long version of "The Story of a Soldier".

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have this if you are into spaghetti westerns!.......2004-04-07

Although this disc sounds so superior to the domestic EMI-Manhattan release, I have a few minor gripes (very, very minor!) OK, the overall sound is majorly improved (warmer bass, less shrill on the highs), but I still hear quite a bit of hiss and a few abrupt edits. Oh well, I guess this is as good as it will ever sound. The bonus tracks are wonderful, although (be warned) they are in mono. I actually shed a few tears during PADRE RAMIREZ (I'm not kidding!). The full length version of THE STORY OF A SOLDIER is great; you can actually understand the lyrics, but here again, it's in mono. The big shining moment on this disc is the finale, where the final 2 minutes and 14 seconds of THE TRIO have been restored (yeah, you guessed it; in mono). The beauty of it is that now you are not left hanging at the end of the disc. This right here, folks, is worth the price of admission!

    This album is absolutely amazing.
It's honestly like nothing I've ever heard before. The first time I listened to it I wasn't sure what to expect but I was not let down. His voice brings the exceptional touch to each song. Favourites include: In a world called catastrophe (it feels as if this song is never going to end... but who said that was a bad thing??), avalanche (the audio effects on the vocals are haunting.. the music is magnificent), 21st century living (short and sweet), while we were hunting rabbits (interesting title but great song. Possibly, in my opinion, the best song on the album. the last few lines are... wow), bright end of nowhere (the simple piano makes this a fave), near fantastica, song for the girl (how could you not LOVE this song? it's perfect) and house of smoke and mirrors (the acoustic guitar is... simply perfect) This album is fantastic, lyrically, musically and vocally.
If you will only buy one cd this year... for the love of God, make sure it's this one!!

I'll keep the repitition short. It's a great album. If like John Mayer, you'll love Matthew Good. Nothing against Mayer, but I don't understand how Mayer can get so much more airtime and publicity.

This album has depth, range and soul. The last time I heard a male singer/songwriter of this caliber was Billy Joel.
