Given the sped-up classic soul samples with which Kanye West has made his mark, it comes as no surprise that the producer/rapper would pick a tradition-minded R&B singer as his first big pet project. Legend first made his name on Philly's incense-clouded, '70s-obsessed neo-soul scene, then found his way to New York and became West's right-hand man in the studio. His patron's pop smarts serve Legend well--while many contemporary R&B records rely too heavily on a singer's cadence and skill to carry underdeveloped tunes, Legend and West have composed genuine songs like the perky "Number One," which has a lovestruck West jabbering that he no longer believes that "my heart don't got nothing to do with my penis." (It's way more convincing than Snoop Dogg's pledge of love on the next track, "I Can Change.") And even when the melodies are slight, West slides some nasty bass lines underneath, hinting at just enough of a hip-hop sensibility to keep the album from drifting into retro nostalgia. Yet Legend is no mere producer's plaything. His voice isn't immediately distinctive; he's neither as careworn as Anthony Hamilton nor as creamy as D'Angelo. But his gift for restraint sets him apart: the sex-as-drug metaphor of the title track is hardly fresh, but Legend delivers it smoothly enough to make it work, without pressing the issue. All bedroom come-ons have been used before. This late in the game, it's a matter of how well you use 'em. --Keith Harris

Kinky Boots DVD.......2007-06-27
When shopping for the Kinky Boots Sound Track CD, Amazon popped up the movie DVD and I made the mistake of ordering that. It took a very nice vendor an several weeks (plus postage) to return the item.
I placed an order for the CD on 6/16 and am still waiting for it. It is taking a long time.
Real Music!!.......2007-06-19
If you want to listen to REAL MUSIC, not none of this hoopla that's out now, you definitely want to buy this CD. for me, john legend gives us peace in the midst of a dying musical era along with others like anthony hamilton and musiq. while his first album is pure genius, the second proves that he is capable of reaching beyond the average expectations; he goes deeper with his sound and lyrics. i appreciate his sincere love for music because it's not compromised for a hit record; he has passion for it and, if you ever get a chance to see him in concert, you'll see and feel it too. I LOVE HIM!
Definately a different sound.......2007-05-10
I enjoy the soultry voice of John Leggend. He is not my traditional R&B singer but I enjoyed the messages and catchy tunes of this album.

Great music.......2007-04-10
This is one of those wonderful CDs that is a complete listening experience. Every song on the album is wonderfully written and executed, so I really enjoy it. In fact, this album is so well produced, you'd think he was a Jackson!

Nebraskan wunderkind Conor Oberst writes songs so naked and heartfelt they make you feel like a voyeur just listening to them. This precocious singer-songwriter croons with the astonished intensity of a homeless Robert Smith singing for his supper. And his band's fourth album is every bit as lyrical, sprawling, and pretentious as its title. The production is notably brighter and crisper than previous efforts, with some songs, notably "Nothing Gets Crossed Out," lushly swathed in sweet-sounding strings. When Lifted is great, as on the slow-churning anthem "From a Balance Beam," it's superb, visionary pop music, on par with Jeff Mangum, Phil Elvrum, and Daniel Johnston--and on occasion, Dylan. Unfortunately, half the songs sprawl on too long or revisit the same themes too frequently. Still, anyone who can operate a fast-forward button will find much to enjoy on this vital, messy masterpiece. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
Full title - Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground. Born in 1980 in Omaha and recording since he was 13, Conor Oberst owns a voice that quakes with the tumultuous energy that only youth can produce. Slipcase. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
just wow. .......2007-05-31
I bought Lifted on vinyl recently and I have to say it must be one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Every song just pours warbly emotion and honest yearnings. The lyrics can be cuttingly blunt and oddly abstract, but they hit you where it counts. Conor's voice is an instrument in and of itself; I guess one of my favorite singers can't really sing, but it wavers with the intensity and earnestness you don't often hear from musicians.
Buy this. From start to finish it's endless poetry to music.
Wow.......2007-03-22
Give this one a few listens and it will stay in the rotation forever...having come late to the Bright Eyes party (after seeing him post-Wilco on Austin City Limits a few months ago) - and ignoring tremendous reviews in Paste, et al - I've got to say that Conor Oberst is outstanding.
Heartfelt is an understatement -- terrific music (even occasional steel guitar) -- lyrics to rival anyone...
I'm Wade Awake still Bright Eyes' best album, but believe me, give this a shot - you won't be disappointed (regardless of your politics).
Anyone with a remote interest in Ryan Adams, Gillian, Wilco, Sufjan needs to give Bright Eyes a try...
Lifted, or the Story Was Daniel Johnston's.......2007-01-03
Lyrically this album is near unparallelled in its blunt honesty. You've got to have a taste for the type of vocalization of Oberst's, a warbly jitter, or you'll instantly dislike the album. The music behind the lyrics ranges from Country (along the lines of bluegrass) to semi-industrial ("Lover I Don't Have To Love"). It has recordings that are pieced together from a lo-fi singalong to brilliant studio quality.
I have to say though, that the most compelling plotline of Bright Eyes' work here, or through their other albums to this one, is that Oberst has captured a page from the semi-obscure musician, Daniel Johnston. Agree or not, you can hear the resonance of Johnston's work, a decade later in the work of Conor Oberst's early works. I'd have to believe that if Johnston hadn't drown in obscurity and mental illness he'd sound a lot like Bright Eyes today.
"Lifted" is, in my opinion, currently, the definitive work of Bright Eyes. This is a great place to start if you are delving into their catalogue.
SCREW ALL THE BAD REVIEWS.......2006-06-28
Having listened to this album from a band I had never heard before I was at first uncertain, but it was listed as "inspirational" on eBay from a seller I liked. I listened to it on a plane headed for my new destination. The album took me on a musically/lyrically beautiful path. The songs have a soul and heart unlike 99.9% of most music out there. I can't compare it to their other albums since I have not heard them, but that shouldn't discourage someone from buying this cd. Indie music isn't mean to be rhymically perfect or rhyme. It shouldn't have to answer to any review on it because it stands as a testiment of music that must be heard and played. It is meant to save us from ourselves and this hell we live in(no matter where in the world you live). Even if it only makes you happy when you hear it, it has done its intentions. Music shouldn't have rules and if you want it to, then listen to every other kind of music they is regurgated by the corporate industries, but leave indie be. It just might save a wretch like me.
Broad scope of Oberst's narrow view.......2006-05-23
This weighty album finds Bright Eye's at his most eclectic with lush, sometimes over-produced instrumentation guiding the tortured vocalist through his trademark soul baring lyrics. The songwriting, while perfectly competent, even eclectically intelligent, does often become mechanized under it's plodding pace. Also, when Oberst fails to restrain his need to convey his awkwardly exploitive, emotionally fragile demeanor in the most bluntly pathetic manner it can often cheapen and disservice his overwhelming talent for such a young folk prodigy. Despite many overbearing faults this is an impressive effort that hints at the potential this artist has still only begun to hopefully realize.

Amazon.com essential recording
Drawn from favorite selections previously performed at Sunday morning worship service, High and Lifted Up is the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's first studio album in more than a decade. Akin to the Brooklyn Tabernacle singers' Songs from the Altar, this is an elegantly scored collection that remains firmly focused on the choir's trademark praise and worship bent. However, while it begins with the relatively uncomplicated "Total Praise," High and Lifted Up, unlike Songs, is lyrically complex, including the words of Psalm 150 and "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Skillfully executed multipart harmonies and swelling strains of strings make the title cut, the Celtic-tinged "Father We Adore Thee," and closer "God of All Gods" crowning achievements. --Paige La Grone

High & Lifted Up - So You Would Know.......2005-08-22
Great music for the Lord! Uplifting and inspiring.
High and Lifted Up.......2005-07-25
This CD is inspiring as it is spirit-filled. Again, only the best can be expected from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. My personal favorites, "Total Praise", "My Help" and "We Are United". Go ahead...get it ...and make a joyful noise unto the Lord!!
Because Of Who They Are.......2003-12-30
If you have never heard the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, please add that to your list of things you plan on doing for 2004, along with the usual"going on a diet". Then after you have heard their cd "This Is Your House", buy a plane ticket and go see them in person, but make sure you take some one with you, because you will not believe what you will see and hear from the 283 plus singers at the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church. The "Holy Spirit" is so overwhelming in this church, you will want to share this feeling.Thank God for Mrs.Carol Cymbala and her choir family, ask anyone and they will tell you how to get to the church in Brooklyn, you will visit more than once.........
Powerful Praise.......2000-11-26
Truly, the anointing of God can be found for everyone who listens to these recordings. The music is upbeat, yet very comforting to the soul through the ministerial words of every song.
This choir and its director truly have been placed by God at this time to provide a very powerful message to his people.
HIGH AND LIFTED UP.......2000-06-22
IT IS ONE OF THE CHOIR'S BEST. IT MINISTERS TO ME AND ANYONE WHO HEARS IT. THEY ARE AN ANNOINTED CHOIR. I FOLLOW THEM WHEN THEY ARE IN MY AREA. KEEP ON BEING A BLESSING TO EVERYONE. IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEM THEM IN PERSON, MAKE A SPECIAL EFFORT AND YOU WILL BE BLESSED. REMEMBER THEY ARE NOT PERFORMERS. THEY ARE MINISTERS THROUGH SONG.

Totally love this album. I must confess it was very VERY pleasent surprise when I receive this item and had the DVD with the concert. There is only one thing: I live in Europe and don't think I will be able to see the DVD.... but I also haven't tried. If I'll be able, I hope to have such good result from it as from the CD.
But I must say: the CD is NOT live (as I thought it would be when I purchase it). Nevertheless..... is FABULASTIC!!

Smooth acapella Silvertones!.......2006-03-16
I first "discovered" the Swan's Silvertones driving home from band gigs in Tennessee back in the 60's. There wasn't much on the radio at 3:00 Sunday Morning, but "Hoss" Allen's radio show out of Nashville's WLAC featured many black gospel groups. The Swans were my favorite.
I recently heard a song that so reminded me of them...of those long, lonesome moonlight treks back home...of the smell of beer and cigarettes clinging to my clothes even though my convertible top was down - it carried me back, so I knew where to look!
Today, driving through rolling hills, along beautiful rivers, the Silvertones are just the ticket! I so enjoy their smooth acapella harmonies...and I'm not a "religious" guy...just one who loves this beautiful music!!!
Five Stars from me!!! I believe I'll pick up another Alabama Blind Boys while I'm at it!!
Magnificent gospel.......2006-03-16
This is the perfect CD to play to see if you're dead or not: put it on, listen to any of it for one minute - if it doesn't move you in unbelievably fantastic ways, you're dead. It's impossible not to be caught up in the harmonies of this gospel group, and the power of their singing is tremendous. TROUBLE IN MIND, MY ROCK, LOVE LIFTED ME, GLORY TO HIS NAME - every one of these performances is a musical (and spiritual) experience not to be missed. The piece de resistance, however, is THE DAY WILL SURELY COME: I never heard a 3-minute recording build, chorus after chorus, to such a climax as this song, and then with 30 seconds left the climax explodes, like a giant wave crashing on a beach, to something even more powerful. I've listened to that cut a hundred times (literally) and every single time it tears at my heart and brings tears to my eyes. The Swan Silvertones are the ultimate housewreckers in my book, and these are their finest recordings. A must-get CD for anyone with life still in them.
The pinnacle of gospel quartet music.......2003-10-14
This album is the high point of the long and distinguished career of the Swan Silvertones. It is also perhaps the best single album of gospel quartet music.
Group leader Claude Jeter was the master of falsetto. In the early Fifties he switched to Specialty Records and reluctantly recruited some hard leads (Solomon Womack, Dewey Young, Robert Crenshaw) to augment his sweet-sounding quartet. At the same time the group moved away from pure a capella singing, adding some unobtrusive instrumentation.
The result is the best of both worlds - beautiful harmonies combined with fierce shouting (Young, Womack) and the screamiest lead singing (Crenshaw) I have ever heard. Apparently Crenshaw was sacked from the group for getting happy too quickly in concert. But in a two-minute recording he is perfect.
The arrangements by Paul Owens are superb; Jeter is at his best throughout. The great Art Rupe produced.
Music to fall out to.
Swans Are Beautiful.......2000-01-26
The titles "Keep My Heart" and "After While" were well worth my money. If you like quartet singing and good harmony. This is a must!

Not just a single! It's an experience!.......2002-10-21
This was one of my first CD's. I was a late CD player owner. I only bought this CD because I admired her outspoken-ness about her sexuality and wanted to know what she sounded like.
What passion I found in her voice and her songs when listening to this CD single. 5 tracks, 4 different songs! A great sampler to her style of music. The title song has 2 mixes which are different enough from each other to be equally admired by this reviewer. A real sensual song, "Lifted By Love" really gets any romantic partner in the mood for a nice quite evening of love.
"No More Tears" is an hommage to Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand's disco era duet. Here, k.d. lang duets with Andy Bell of Erasure. This remix is not available anywhere else.
"Miss Chatalaine" (another remix) takes you back to those moments of sweet song writing and arrangements.
"Just Keep Me Moving" is a wonderful way to close the CD tracks. The mixes ont his CD are nice and smooth. I'm almost tempted to say jazzy. A definite for music lovers and audiophiles.
Best of the best.......1999-10-28
No one has a voice as clear and strong as k.d. lang. This tune is no exception to that. It is taken from her cd, "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" which is her personal favorite from her collection of work, and mine too. (No relation to the artist.)

Don't Buy.......2006-08-05
Don't buy this dics. Its expensive and you may not be able to download it to your ipod. Check the warning in small print first.
Even if the music is great. What good is a CD you can't play on your ipod.
Awesome. All killer, no fillers........2006-02-18
Jon Legend delivers on his name. He has a voice similar to Stevie Wonder's but still has his own unique style. He has a very complex vocal range and is fun to listen to. With hip hop beats mixed with his unique singing style, you will be both singing and dancing to Jon Legend the all the way through. This album is definately worth buying.
Almost there..........2006-01-30
This album is almost there - with some ingenuity provided by Kanye and some great vocals from John, it has it's shining moments. The album seems to lose steam in the middle. I would recommend the DVD/CD version for just a few dollars more - it's cool, providing some live concert video footage and interviews. It's worth the purchase just to learn more about this prodigy talent. John Legend has the chops and the skills, I think that a little more refining and working with some producers that can help him fine-tune some lyrics and instrumentation could make his next album a 5 star. Glad he's around and looking forward to his next record, just wish he'd ask his "musical guests" to keep the lyrics clean.
This is what legends are made of.......2005-12-17
It may be a little late to be just listening to John Legend's album Get Lifted, but like they say, better late than never. And when you hear people that don't even like listening to R&B say that they like this album, that tells you something. It's damn good.
There are plenty of standouts on here, like "Used to Love U" and both versions of the title track. And "It Don't Have to Change" is a nice gospel-flavored track that has him and the Stephens Family reminiscing on how it used to be in the neighborhood. The funky "Stay With You" is also a highlight.
John also does well when he lets the music dominate. We all know how great "Ordinary People" is, but another standout is when Miri Ben-Ari lends her strings to "Live It Up". And "So High" is aptly titled because I didn't expect John to be able to do falsetto very well, but he proved me wrong.
Sometimes things can get a little corny, though. "Alright" has him steppin' up to the man that he stole his current girl from, and it really makes him seem like a poser. And as much as everyone likes "Number One", I think it's pretty okay, and it starts out with, "Now you can't say I don't love you/Just because I cheat on you." Huh? Kanye's verse doesn't help matters either. Finally, "I Can Change" sounds exactly like "Used to Love U".
Still, there are enough good songs on here to make up for those small missteps. So hurry up and check this album out if you haven't already, because Get Lifted will help you do just that.

GOOD MUSIC, BAD CD.......2005-12-02
This cd has real good music, and I would recommend it, but if you plan on ripping it to iTunes or any other media server, think again - you can't! It's 2005 peeps we don't like carrying around frisbees anymore so nice your protection on the "copyright infridgement". Don't support the companies that choose to put out products with this!
