Amazon.com

Taking a cue from the Buddha Bar compilations, this collection of nu-jazz swing and martini music represents the sound and feel of a popular coffeehouse, in this case the Café De Flore in Paris' Saint-Germain district. With the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, Diana Krall. and Eartha Kitt represented, the music is both grown up enough to play for the in-laws and filled with enough hipster irony to attract members of the younger cocktail nation. The combination of young and old plays out literally on record as well; songs from icons like Nina Simone rub up against the 21st century dance-bop of Lakasha and Paris Combo. More jazz than dance, and much! better suited for a rainy day than sunny Ibiza-style chill compilations, it's ritzy cabaret-style pop. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

This compilation conveys the mood of the place, timeless, light & romance of the Parisian cafe. 21 tracks from the likes of Diana Krall, Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg, Blossom Dearie, & more. Sunnyside. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Ambience, cafe au lait and croissants!.......2005-09-24

I stumbled upon this amazing CD when I was shopping for the Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe series (all of which are fabulous by the way).
The ambience from the first track, "I Feel Blue" sets the scene for the whole album, however expect surprises, just when you settle back and chill to the tunes of more like this, (especially the beautiful track 8, "Ou Es-Tu Passe Mon Saint Germain Des Pres"? by Nicoletta), suddenly expect to tap your feet to the amazing "Quand On S'Aime" by Nana Mouskouri (I know!!!) and Michel Legrand. This uptempo track is contagious and continues through the CD. Contemporary artists and tunes mix with beautiful sounds from Nina Simone and Blossom Dearie. Put this CD on, make a cafe latte, sit back in the sun with the Sunday papers and just relax..you deserve it.

5 out of 5 stars Chill world music that makes you happy........2004-03-16

I picked up Cafe De Flore to try and learn some French before a vacation, and I haven't been able to quit listening to this wonderful album. The songs are arranged perfectly, and the diverse selection of artists shows a true appreciation for all types of music.

If you like downtempo, chill, soul, or jazz, you will adore this album. Take a chance and learn some French. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sunday brunch selection.......2007-01-16

Love this CD. Great background music for entertaining especially in the day.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Lot.......2006-08-15

I am a huge St. Germain / Tourist fan and have been trying to find similar music. I have Volume 1, 2 and 3 of this collection. This one comes the closest in style to St. Germain. The first four tracks are more upbeat than the rest of the CD but still overall excellent.
As the series continues, the music moves away from 'Electro Jazz' and more towards 'New age Jazz'. Still some great songs on volume II and III.

5 out of 5 stars New Jazz.......2005-09-20

This is a great CD for lovers of New style techno Jazz such as Saint Germain. i Own Tourist and Boulavard both by Saint Germain, and this CD is Along those lines, and while only one song on the CD is actually by Saint Germain, it is way better then boulavard and at least equal to Tourist. this is one of the finest new jazz compilations ive ever heard, its very upbeat, and the songs are not too long, and although they have to be somewhat repetitive because of the genre, they arent to bad about that.....i recommend it to anyone looking for fun music.

5 out of 5 stars Great ONE.......2003-11-25

The best electro-jazz cd i've heard to the date!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not a review, but a question.......2003-09-20

I heard a bit of ocean games in a commerical in venezuela, and it listed the artist as St.Germain cafe. (I think it did, it was in spanish after all) Anyway my question is to anyone who already has this CD, Could you tell me who made ocean games? I'm trying to see if this the same song I'm thinking, so I'm gonna try searching for the artist. Pleae email me at grey_fox24@yahoo.com if you know.

3 out of 5 stars I preferred #8.......2007-06-06

I bought #8 before this one and was a bit disappointed. I really liked the one I bought originally.

When making a choice, go with #8!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, Not great........2006-02-03

First and foremost... Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe is NOT a Ludovic Navarre cd. I think it's said on every compilation but always bears repeating. NO, this is NOT a St. Germain CD... it is not a CD from the same artist that released "Boulevard", "Tourist", or even "Memento" under the Soel moniker. Having said all that, I definitely love the different perspective on the other review. I think it pretty much defines the series. The past few editions of this series have been erratic, and in some ways I think other compilations of Wagram's that I like have been the same, particularly Hotel Costes.

I kind of liked this one and it presented a first in the series - a double disc set. Disc one is the usual from the series, jazz, nu-jazz and broken beats. It starts out with Paulo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi's "Oriental Smile", a song that's really consistent with Schema tunes of today with big bossa and male and female vocals. Speaking of Schema' The Five Corners Quintet slip in a song later called "This could Be the Start of Something". The song starts out beautifully, but I quickly fell out of love when the vocal came in. Sicania Soul had a festive percussion feel to it and I do like Povo's "Uam Uam", however I could've sworn I heard it on an earlier edition of this series but guess I'm confusing that with the dozens of other series it's been on. Tosca's "Pyjama" is a pretty slick number though and Beat Assailant, IMO, closes out the cd pretty well. The Second disc of this one is more of a 'dedication to Ladies in Nu-Jazz'. I kind of liked this one to be honest with you - especially the tracks by Tok Tok Tak, Re:Jazz and Jeanette Lindstrom in addition to Fertile Ground's "Yellow Daisies". It's a solid cd, but is rather low-key in general.

And here's where this gets tricky - I liked a lot of the songs on this but to be perfectly honest, this one had a 'been there done that' kind of feel to it, especially when a tune like "Uam Uam" from around 2001 is used as a new jazz cut - I guess the Moonstar remix would have been a little fresher. In some ways I guess the series might be showing the age, so they did decide to do something quite different and add a themed second cd, which was IMO a good idea otherwise the 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 might've been 3. In the end this wasn't a cd that floored me at all, but was a capable entry in the series; yet at the same time one that raises the question of the future of the series. Wagram's been known for a bit of saturation; the Des Pres Cafe series, Paris Lounge series, Costes series and Buddha Bar series sometimes have track duplication. I think Paris Lounge is done (the last one was "24 Hours in Paris"), but I wonder what's next.

2 out of 5 stars What is this?.......2006-01-15

I have no idea what Wagram was trying to accomplish with this compilation...at its best, it is a distant shadow from the quality of the other six volumes. The songs in the first cd are lame and sound too holiday-ish....I had to check the CD player once the music was playing to verify I was indeed playing a SGDPC series CD.
The second volume is equally lame and lacks the "kick" that has come to define the SGDPC series.
Don't waste your money on this one!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Light, Fluid & Sweet .......2004-09-02

I must agree with a Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe fan who posted that this particular installment had "too much" vocals. I agree but partially. Though the album, on a whole, had lots of lyrics/vocals, the way each song segue-d into each other was smooth and light. I really appreciated that because that makes for some good lounging/dinner party entertainment. The problem that I have with other electro-jazz compilations is that the transition from song to song tends to be harsh and disruptive, but with this CD the opposite is true; that makes me happy. Lots of lyrics/vocals yes -- but plenty of smooth tunes that will have you bopping your head and snapping your fingers at one instance and closing your eyes and chillaxing at the next.

3 out of 5 stars This one disappointed me.......2004-04-17

It may not disappoint you however. I liked the strong fusion of jazz, house, techno and latin found in the first three compilations. This one has more vocals, definitely underline the lounge here. I am an instrumentalist myself so I tend to favor the instrumentals with the cool beats that the first three releases featured.

5 out of 5 stars Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe vol. 4.......2004-03-14

This is the best Saint Germain set as of yet.. It gets you from the beginning but especially track 3 "Flying Saucer" w/ DeeDee Bridgewater. I play this CD and my friends always ask me what I'm lisiting to, that's usually a good sign....

4 out of 5 stars Back for a Fourth Cup........2004-01-24

Brought to you by the same people who are responsible for the "Paris Lounge" and "Hotel Costes" compilations, along comes the fourth entry in the "Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe." Now, it's been said before, but it obviously bears repeating: this has nothing to do with the Saint Germain that released the "Tourist" album. This is a mix of French-inspired jazz with various touches of downtempo electronica and bossa nova. I was actually pretty surprised that they released a fourth album and I didn't even know it was out until I stumbled upon it at a local record shop I frequent. Those who already own the prior three collections will have no reason to be disappointed with this one. The 19 tracks here offer a rich sampling of cafe lounge that's as tasty and as lively as a double espresso. I really liked Koop's breezy "Fuoco Fauto" as well as Metropolitain Jazz Affair's "Yunowhathislifeez" and the percussion-heavy "Equal" by Lunar Chipmunk featuring Oscar. Other cuts of note are "Nattergalen" by Bobby Hughes Combination and "Swoundosophy" by Infracom, both of which are excellent. The only dud is "Suddenly" by Matthew Herbert, which doesn't fit into the CD's jazzy theme and sticks out like a sore thumb. This is otherwise a must-buy for those who already have the prior three volumes and want to add a new twist to their downtempo collection. Grade: B+.

5 out of 5 stars Zoom Across the Sky..........2004-01-22

Des Pres Cafe. This is one of my favorite lounge/nu-jazz series. It's released on the Wagram label, the same label that gives you other French comps like "Hotel Costes" and "Paris Lounge". Please note from the get-go - this is NOT a Ludovic Navarre aka "Saint Germain" cd (the dj/producer that did "Tourist" or "Boulevard"). This is a compilation of nu-jazz/lounge/electronic dj tunes. I've reviewed a few of the others and I'm always impressed with each new one that comes out. Safe to say, volume does NOT disappoint..

What I like most about this CD is the flow. It starts out nice and easy, then picks up with a pretty bangin' UFO cut followed by a Koop remix. On down the line you have Nicola Conte re-doing the favor with "Tonight" in the way he does - jittery bossa. You also have a bit of latin in there with a twist, thanks to Zuco 103, and Infracom's cut "Swoundosophy" has a certain sweet old-school jazz influence - guess which one? Bobby Hughes COmbination, Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Paul Hunter, Beady Belle, Kruder & DOrfmeister, Loopless, Nicolette are a few of the other names that contribute. My favorite cuts were definitely "Suddenly", "Flying Saucer", "Squire for Hire" among others... although admittedly, "Suddenly" seems a tad out of place. Also - check the Nicolette cut "No Government"; I dig the DJ Cam mixing background sample in it.

Highly recommended! This one in particular is a bit more consistent that the previous ones and the sound is more mature. I'd almost say they took a page out of Break & Bossa vol 6 (first five cuts of cd2 in that series) on how to put together a good nu-jazz/bossa release. Only down cuts to me were the Kruder Dorfmeister track. If you dig this, by all means check out the previous Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe, Break & Bossa 6, DJ Cam's "Mad Blunted Jazz" and maybe "Get Into the Martini Mood vol. 1" The Koop and Conte remixes are available on great albums: Jet Sounds Revisted and "Waltz for Koop: Alternative Takes"

        Album Description

Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe, Vol. 4 offers stylish, laid-back electronica influenced by hip-hop and jazz, particularly on Slow Train's bittersweet 'Naturally' and Nathan Haines' cheeky 'Squire for Hire'. The collection features several of the leading lights of electro-jazz, including such standout tracks as Nicola Conte's 'Fuoco Fatuo, Koop's Tonight' (Nicola Conte New Jazz Version), Kruder & Dorfmeister's 'High Noon', and Matthew Herbert's 'Suddenly'. Cuts by Loopless, Paul Hunter, and Nicolette round out this smoothly eclectic collection, which manages to be more than just fashionable sonic wallpaper. Digipak. Wagram. 2005.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of the St Germain des Pres series.......2005-01-29

The bland brown CD cover doesn't have the aesthetic appeal of the previous St Germain des Pres CD's, but the criticism ends there. This CD continues in the great musical spirit of the series -- smooth electro-jazz tunes. It is generally more mellow than #4, but integrates several uptempo salsa-style tracks without sounding discontinuous. Volume 5 has a smooth flow that won't have you skipping songs. With so many electro-jazz compilation CD's with a bikini-clad club dancer on the cover but garbage on the CD, perhaps the St Germain des Pres producers have realized that the real beauty of volume 5 is in the music. That might explain the mystique in the mundane brown cover. Buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Back to the Drawing Board..........2004-12-09

First and foremost... no, this is NOT a St. Germain aka Ludovic Navarre CD. This series is released on Wagram, same label as Hotel Costes, Paris Lounge, Buddha Bar and several other compilation series that feature music from all over the world. Usually, the St. Germain Des Pres Cafe series has a sort of swing mixed in with some electronica and nu-jazz. Good stuff... usually. But I'm having a hard time disagreeing with the previous review. This cd is really missing energy and originality. Remember the way the third one started? A little Nuspirit Helsinki followed up with some sweet Conte remixes, and then it had that flow in the end of the cd?

This one doesn't have that. It starts out with "Inner City Woman" by Slow Train (remix), and from there you get an idea of the tempo of this cd. That is, after you're briefly deceived by the cool & jazzy Conte remix to "take Off" by soul man Nathan Haines and Marco Di Marco. Afterwords you have Conte's labelmate with a seemingly Milano 2000 (Ishtar's other label) sounding cut "The Time". Reminds me of S-Tone Inc's old tunes, and it was IMO one of the weaker tracks on Soulstance's cd last year. But that song symbolises the album - although I did like the Astor Piazzolla remix and Meitz duet and cool beat. Also.. what in the world is up with the song "Round About Midnight"? Yes, it was a good song, but it seems like every single compilation is using some version of it. What's worse... Wagram had the song on Paris Lounge 3 already. You go down the list of tracks and it's much the same thing. Most of the cuts were pre-2004, and the tracks that are decent (Conte's remixes, DJ Cam's cut, etc.) can be found on better comps (Break & Bossa, etc.) There were loads of good nu-jazz artists that could've been added to make this a better compilation. What's Buscemi been up to these days? What about the Irma label - loads of artists are coming out with tunes there? And how can a nu-jazz cd be released without a tune off of Rosalia De Souza's remix project? That could fix some of the energy problems - same with Nicola Conte's new cut "Kind of Sunshine"! And hey - not all of Re:Jazz's remix project have been utilized. Or what about a little Jazzinho for some spice or taking a track off of Wagon Cookin's "Appetizers" or their newest, "Everyday Life"?

I'm having a tough time recommending this one. It's a nice more 'chilled out' cd, but the energy isn't there and to be honest even if they were looking for a more mellow vibe, all this succeeded in doing was making me yawn. I'll call this one a hiccup in an otherwise fantastic series. I recommend the previous four (especially the last two) instead of this one. ALSO... note that the first four volumes of this series are now available as double disc sets. So you can get vol 1&2 or vol 3&4 together. But if you did get this cd and liked it, you might also enjoy "Jazz Lounge vol II".

3 out of 5 stars Not the same intensity as the previous four compilations.......2004-11-28

I wonder if this will be the last of the series! Once you place this CD on the player you will begin to wonder where has all the intensity of the other four compilations gone...!
Unlike the previous works in the series, this one is to be played way after a dinner party...the energy is not the same and it makes you yawn at times. I picked it up this afternoon at a local records store expecting much more than this...Instead, buy the second installment of the Bajofondo Tango Club.
