Product Description
A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.
Customer Reviews:
Marvelous.......2007-02-12
A marvelous collection of compositions which greatly enhanced this fantastic film. This CD is marvelous on its own. It did not leave my CD player for weeks.
Pretty Good.......2006-12-14
I purchased this soundtrack because I really enjoyed this music while watching the movie. But I was a little disappointed at the CD. Some soundtracks allow you to follow the entire plot like through the music (such as the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack). But this CD doesn't provide that. Several of the songs are recurring in the film but are only played once in the soundtrack. I would have liked the soundtrack to reflect the music for the whole film rather than just excerpts.
I give the music 5 stars and the CD 2-1/2 stars.
the music .......2006-11-10
The music is excellent . Flows well Better than the movie score
Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09
The soundtrack for Master and Commander contains two distinct types of music. First there is the incidental music for the film. These pieces are heavy on the bass side of the orchestra and are often emphasized with bass drums and tympani. This music is very effective and appropriate for the scenes in the film, and I commend the composers for making a soundtrack that so seemlessly and effortlessly invokes the moods and excitement of the visuals. Unfortunately, these pieces are quite moody and slow moving - great as incidental music but not so interesting to listen to as straight orchestral music.
The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.
People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.
Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27
The original music to this film is dull, repetitive, and only offers the hint of good music at certain points during it's lengthy tracks. But what about all the good music you heard in the film? That was all classical music, which was used in the film incredibly well. There are three tracks in particular that save this album. The piece by Corelli is used as something the captain and doctor play together. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of baroque music of which I am aware. A second piece, Vaughn Williams "Fantasia" is the piece heard when the crewmen have to cut the line that might save their friend who fell overboard. It's a tragic scene and accompanied perfectly by the heart-breakingly glorious piece. The original piece of music is quite a bit longer than the version on the CD, but the original version also tends to drag a little in places. All the best parts are on the version of the piece in the film. The third classical piece from the album that saves it is the cello solo by Bach that plays as a theme for the galapagos islands. This solo is performed perfectly by Yo Yo Ma. These tracks make the album worth purchasing. If you already have them, avoid the album because the rest is not very enjoyable. If you wonder about this one, watch the film and listen for the music. It speaks well for itself in the film.

As comfortable as guitarist Lee Ritenour has always been in the smooth jazz format, he has strived to go beyond it with his embrace of world music and serious jazz stylists including Wes Montgomery. Smoke 'N' Mirrors is a characteristic production in gathering up a sizable cast of contemporary cronies including Patrice Rushen, Dave Grusin, Richard Bona and Abraham Laboriel, but Ritenour's involvement in South African and Brazilian music and his emphasis on acoustic guitar give it a fresh identity. The wistful "Blue Days (Dias Azuis)," written and arranged by Daniel Jobim, son of Antonio Carlos, and featuring the singer Joyce, is one of the album's highlights. The young South African vocalist Zamajobe, featured on three songs, is a real discovery. You may wish Ritenour had stayed on ethnic turf and saved the more familiar, keyboard-sweetened fare for another album. Or you may enjoy the variety of Smoke 'N' Mirrors, which ranges percussively from Sheila E.'s congas to Satnam Ramgotra's Indian tablas. --Lloyd Sachs

No smoke and mirrors in his music... just pure artistry !
"Smoke 'n' Mirrors" Smokes!.......2007-07-04
I should begin by making you aware of three things: (1) I'm partial. As a musician myself (hornman), I've literally worshipped Lee Ritenour since the first day I heard him play (try "Harlequin" with Dave Grusin!). (2) I plead 'guilty' to purchasing a CD for a single song because you can't get that rendition anywhere else. And (3), being a 70s teenager, the Lee + Patrice Rushen combination was something I simply couldn't pass up. When I added it all up, "I simply had to have "Forget Me Nots." After listening to the tune at least 100 times repeated, my wife suggested I listen to the other tunes on the CD. MAN! I wasn't the least bit disappointed! For me, a tune either "cooks," is "hot" or "smokes" - the threee levels of burn. Lee, Don and Eric REALLY put this one together. If music has to start out "cookin'" for you, this CD is a must!

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: Best of Dinah Washington.......2006-12-17
They always forget the great ladies of song. This is by far one of the best cd's I have purchased in a long time.
Perfect..........2006-05-16
There are a few recordings that I like to refer to as my "cigar" music, this is indeed one of them, perfect for late night sitting on my balcony with a good cigar. Tune after tune, a homerun!! I like to load them in the player and program them in a random order.
Her beautiful, mellow, smokey voice takes you back to a simpler time.......2006-03-03
I absolutly love it!
The First Lady of R&B.......2004-01-19
Missing a lot of songs, but still important to buy. Some of these songs made me cry. The emotions in her voice were so unreal. People compare her to Billie and Bessie a lot, but Dinah had her own style. It's too bad that she is not remembered as much as the other ladies. One day, she will get her due respect (maybe a movie will help). Anyway, if these songs don't make you a fan then you don't know good music.

Beautiful!.......2007-04-24
I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.
Winged Migration CD.......2007-02-08
Awesome, for the most part- best after watching the documentary. A couple of songs had to skip through, but the rest is a good post movie mental review- watch the movie first...
Beautiful Soundtrack.......2007-01-06
I loved this movie and the soundtrack makes it ever better. I havent bought a CD in a while and this one is reasonably priced and rare.
WINGED MIGRATION.......2006-08-29
The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.
THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22
Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

Most posthumous albums are shrouded in a sense of morbid nostalgia and grim curiosity. In Sublime's case, there was also some cruel irony to contend with: the California nuevo-punk outfit's promising self-titled major-label debut and commercial breakout was released barely a month after frontman Brad Nowell's death from a heroin overdose--and their de facto demise. But such was the Long Beach band's longtime following that raiding the vaults, however sparse, was inevitable. Released 18 months after Nowell's death, Second Hand Smoke more than lived up to its title, cobbling together a collection of outtakes from their debut and padding them out with (sometimes multiple) remixes of old tracks like "Doin' Time," "April 29," and the Gwen Stefani duet, "Saw Red." There's a standout cover of Bob Marley's "Trenchtown Rock," but a lot of the rest feels like the incomplete discards and second (or third) choices they obviously were. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Raw Sublime.......2007-02-20
This album combines a small dosage of the catchy, addictive sound of the Self-titled with a big hit of fluid rhymes and deep pervasive beats of 40 Oz. and just the right amount of underground, truly raw, explicit sound of Robbin the Hood. The overall flow of the songs can disappoint, but the disc is of excellent use on the CDJ's...
Ohhh man.......2006-12-12
This album sounds sublime... the weakest sublime album but still f*ckin amazing! I love it... good music lovers just get it.
what the heck happened?.......2006-04-20
Dude, this CD has absolutely no good songs on it. The tracks just seem like they were tossed together on the spot without any practice first. Not to say I don't like Sublime though, because I have their debut and it's really good. This CD however is weak and ought not to be purchased.
The inevitable leftovers - Buyer beware.......2006-01-17
The instinct to cash in on their well-earned reputation as a landmark band of the nineties was perhaps too much for the surviving members of Sublime to resist, hence this release.
Most of tracks presented here are sub-par versions of previously released material. It would be of interest to hardcore fans and others who are curious as to the evolution of their songs, but there is little else here to sustain interest over any period of time.
I never get tired of this..........2005-11-17
I have been a Sublime fan for years and I have to say this is my favorite album. It's like an old friend, when you come across it you just get so happy! This is one of those cds you can take out at any time and listen to. Of all the songs, "Badfish" just makes me happy, and I find myself missing it often. I have owned this cd probably ten times and it keeps "disappearing". I am getting ready to order it again because I can't live without it! I am also getting "Sublime" since my husband wants that one again. We have really crappy friends... Not that I blame them. The only thing that I dislike about Sublime is that they won't be making any new albums. This album is worth the $12 or so, it's also worth buying over and over again.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Album Description
Is there any song that sums up the late '70s music scene like 'Smoke from a Distant Fire'? It had the blue-eyed soul crossed with high-gloss L.A. production sound of the Doobie Brothers, Kenny Loggins and other superstars of the era, with the kind of hook only real pros could create. For, as is often the case with so-called "one-hit wonders," Ed Sanford and John Townsend had spent years in the music business before hitting it big with this album. Indeed, the sound of this record was no accident; the duo had worked with both Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins (who repays the favor with a great vocal on 'Oriental Gate') before cutting this 1977 release. And talk about music biz connectionsthe album was produced by the great Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett! So, it's no surprise this one is a hot item for '70s pop collectorsa 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!

Smoking.......2007-06-28
I'm thrilled that this album finally come out as a CD. I've been saving an an original album for years. Smoke from a Distant Fire is a classic, but there are other great songs such as Rainbows covered in Blue, In for the Night, Sunshine in my Heart etc. etc. I was always surprised that this group didn't last too long.
A Classic........2007-05-09
Many thanks to Collector's Choice for reissuing this magnificent album on CD, previously only available on disc in the fine but expensive and rare Japanese pressing.
"Smoke From A Distant Fire" is one of a few dozen tunes that instantly, for those of us in our late 30s/early 40s, takes you back to the great days of AM gold. And, the good part, it's not the only catchy, likeable tune on the record.
In a time when almost anything seems to qualify as "a classic", this duo and these tunes really are.
A Special Album.......2006-11-13
I had this album back in the days of vinyl and had to buy the CD. It's as good as I remember blending jazz with rock for their unique sound.
Even better than I remember.......2006-10-17
Sanford and Townsend blew me away thirty years ago with this album. Their performance at the Bottom Line in NYC was even better. Their voice, harmonies, and music are simply incredible. Since my turntable went kaput, I've been unable to enjoy this incredible album. Squire James has become a staple in my household for Halloween music. Now we can enjoy those days all over again. Just sit back, kick back, and get ready to rock n' roll with rock n' soul music!
Great to hear it again........2005-10-06
These guys are simultaneously a rock and roll treasure and a rock and roll tragedy. This is one of the best albums of the era--every song on it is tremendous and instead of being one-hit wonders, S&T should have dominated the airwaves like Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles.
The only thing better than this was the demo that got them their record deal. The demo, which featured these songs played by Loggins & Messina's band and recorded by their production team is so much better than this admittedly hit-bound recording, it's sick. The grooves are slinkier, Townsend doesn't sound so stiff and ready for radio. The whole demo has this organic southern smile on it that is truly amazing. Why Warner's re-recorded it is a mystery. Maybe the guys can get the rights to their demo tracks and release them on CD. Hell, it's only been 30 years. Now that would be something to buy!
Still "Smoke" is a tremendous record. None of the later records came close.

SUPERB.......2007-01-11
Ok, I have read the other reviews. It is true that the exclusion of Backdoor Love Affair is criminal. And it is also true the mixes, dance tracks at the end of disk 4 are ignorant. Come on it's ZZ Top, we don't want to hear some dance mix. We wanna boogie woogie Texas style.
Why someone called Heaven, Hell or Houston their worse song. NO WAY! Heaven, Hell or Houston and Manic Mechanic are both in the same vein and are 2 of my favorite tunes by the band. Of course the single best song ever has to be Waitin/Jesus Just Left.
All in all, I am very happy to have the proper remastering of these songs. The six pack was a complete joke. Now ZZ Top needs to release a live album that can stand the test of time. I believe they are capable of making a (Seger)Live Bullet or (Cheap Trick)Live at Budakon or (U.F.O.)Strangers In The Night.
Rock on my little ol' band from Tejas!
Intelligent song selection.......2006-08-26
Even though this package is a bit pricey, each CD is packed with over 75 minutes of music, and the accompanying booklet is well-written, interesting and a good addition to the set.
The song selections are right on the money. For Tres Hombres and Fandango, for instance, the best songs were chosen and the lemons were left off of this compilation. One could quibble about including more from the First Album, but then choices had to be made. In general, every song on this compilation is enjoyable. A 5 or 6 CD set could easily have been released but this is an excellent sampling.
A couple of the other reviewers gave incorrect information which I'd like to correct. The version of Legs is the exact same version, down to the second, as appeared on their album Eliminator--it was not cut-off during a guitar solo as one reviewer erroneously stated. Also, another reviewer said that this compilation uses the "disco mix" releases of the early albums. The reviewer is wrong. This set uses a remastering of the original album releases, not the bogus rerecorded versions.
Chewy Goodness.......2006-06-28
I must say that this collection demonstrates the most impressive improvement via remastering that I've yet experienced. It's almost like hearing these tunes for the first time.
If you like the Top, this is a worthwhile investment. I've nearly worn it out.
Love this Box Set !.......2006-06-17
Other more knowledgeable reviewers have covered some of the omissions and details regarding this box set---
All I know is that overall ( minus a few tracks covered by other reviewers ) this is some really fine music covering a 20 year period . Billy Gibbons while maybe not the fastest or most flashy guitarist around says a hell of a lot more with fewer notes than most with his awe inspiring tone and soulful playing.Get this set and enjoy !
ZZ TOP for those that only know the hits!.......2006-01-07
Great package that you can see the band was involved in. Too bad it doesnt include anything from their last 4 albums but this is all original Warner Bros. material so you know that your time and money will be well worth it. Interesting how this band can strike gold twice in the 70s and 80s and have yet to find their 'comeback' ala the Stones rediscovering themselves on the terrific Bigger Bang album.

The Rev's First.......2007-04-05
This album, the Rev's first, should be required listening for all who lust for great Rock 'n Roll. Never have I come across an artist that hits the target so consistently on center. Usually placed in the catagory of "rockabilly" or "psychobilly" (two if my favorite catagories, BTW) Mr. Heath is much much more than that. Mix up a cocktail of classic rock and roll, one part punk, a dash of rockabilly/1950s, a sprinkle of Johnny Cash and Ernest Tubb, a hint of Roger Miller's wit...then supercharge it. Absolutely blazing guitar work, complimented by the rock solid slap bass of Jimbo Wallace and drumming of wild man Taz Bentley. Makes the Stray Cats (who they are often compared to) look like pussies. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING beats the Rev live...see him soon at a venue near you. (Next buy Full Custom Gospel Sounds of...)
"Rockabilly Freakout"...How Apt.......2007-01-12
I first was introduced to the Reverend and his particular form of sermonizing on a long-gone PC FPS called "Redneck Rampage". The game disc also included a soundtrack, which featured two of the Reverend's songs, "Wiggle Stick" amd "Nurture My Pig". I then was re-introduced to the Reverend on "Guitar Hero 2", which featured "Psychobilly Freakout", which was exactly that. I don't see how anyone could play a guitar that fast, but he did. And based on the strength of that one song, I bought this CD, and I'm glad I did. I like every single song on this CD, and that is exceptionally rare for me. All of the songs are good, there are only ones which I like better than others ("Big Dwarf Rodeo" and "Eat Steak" come to mind). If you're a fan of rockabilly or the Stray Cats, the other group that falls into this niche, then you owe it to yourself to get this CD.
Underrated.......2006-12-24
The Cramps are second, but these guys blow them out of the water. I also never understand how so many people ignore this band. Seriously, it's not a stupid _________ rap album that you "dance" to (yeah, if you call moving left to right dancing, my __________ ___. Yeah I do it sometimes, but if you just do that, then no wonder so many people are so ______ boring). If people want to ignore music like this and listen to 50 cent, let em. Whatever.
Oh yeah sorry forgot to review the album. Get it. It's cathcy, fun, and has good guitar solos. You'll want to rock out. Add this with Highway To Hell, Led Zeppelin, Appetite For Destruction, Destroyer (nevermind, I never liked Kiss), some Aerosmith, Shout At the Devil, and Boston. Get this instead of some H.I.M. album.
Go. go.. go.......2006-07-20
Another straight ahead headbanger from the Reverend. If you like your music loud and strong with a hint of C&W on some tracks, then this is it. He follows other strong CD,s in the same vein.
Sparks Fly, Hot Rods Race, Buxom Women Swoon..........2005-12-03
Behind the deceptively subdued exterior of the album cover, and the Reverend's Eddie Haskell grin that appears thereon, lies a world we all desperately yearn for. (Well, some of us, anyway.) It features fast women, fast cars, big, thick steaks, and rodeos with big dwarfs. Holy cow, what more could a guy ever want from life?
The Reverend rocks like a man who's been brought up properly in the Rockabilly tradition. He'll have you playing air guitar and before you know it, you're dancing around like a concert madman and then trying to explain to the wife that it was a pretend Stratocaster that she saw you holding and thrusting in front of your hips.
This is good old fashioned bang yer fingers on the dashboard, jam the accelerator, punkamunkahunkabilly rock and roll. I bet George Thorogood wishes he could play his riffs half as fast and with as much feeling.

After two close-but-no-cigar efforts for the now-defunct Decca label, Smoke Rings in the Dark marks Gary Allan's emergence as a major talent. The album was coproduced by MCA Nashville honchos Tony Brown and Mark Wright, who between them have been responsible for dozens of No. 1 country hits in the '90s. Thanks to shrewd song selections, Allan's sound bridges the gap between the contemporary Nashville mainstream and West Coast alt-country with style and integrity. With its haunting Roy Orbison-style refrain, the title track is among the most immediately memorable singles to penetrate country playlists in 1999. The ballads "Bourbon Borderline" and "Greenfields" recall labelmate Mark Chesnutt, whose traditionalist leanings Allan clearly shares. At the same time, he's not averse to slinking and strutting through the zoot-suit swinger "Sorry" and howling a faithful cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway." Smoke Rings should make Allan a bona fide star; it's already established him as a bona fide artist. --Rick Mitchell

This is a fantastic CD.......2006-11-25
I was recently introduced to Gary Allen's music, and this is one of my favorite CDs. I find myself listening to it over and over. Gary Allen has such a great voice, and his band is excellent, too. I don't know why country stations in my area don't play his songs more often. He's a better singer than some of the more famous country celebrities out there. When I'm driving in my car, I find myself turning off the radio and listening to this CD instead.
satisfied.......2006-08-11
I am excited for purchasing this cd because it is better than I expected.I bought it for just one song but I found out that I like all the songs as well.
One of the Best.......2006-02-05
Smoke Rings in the Dark is one of the best albums I own. I love every song on it. I saw Gary Allan in concert when he was touring this album... he sings like his album. A very talented artist.
One of the best country albums of the past decade.......2006-01-23
With "Smoke Rings in the Dark", Gary Allan achieved one of the rarest feats in music--the recording of a great disc that gets better with age. As with some of the very best, regardless of genre, this is an album that one can put on, press the "replay" button, and listen for hours. Allan's soulful voice and the true-to-the-song arrangements combine to make for the sort of moaning honky-tonk music that is simply so good it seems like it's been there forever. If you are at all a fan of country music, and especially of the Bakersfield sound, you must get this album.
