5 out of 5 stars Sometimes When We Touch...touches me..........2007-03-16

If you are a child of the 60's or 70's, prepare your soul for a trip back home. His music and his lyrics are as simple as rain yet as deep as the sea. What's not to love about "sometimes when we touch, the honesty's too much and I have to close my eyes and cry." A sweet melancholy awaits you...light the candles.

4 out of 5 stars You better enjoy ballads..........2007-03-02

If you like Dan Hill's typical mellow, bordering-on-cheesy, ballads, then this is a good album for you. Hill is known for his love-themed, practically-cheesy, mellow ballads, and this album is full of them. His popular tracks, "Sometimes When We Touch" and "Can't We Try", are on this compilation, along with several other ballads. Although his duets are recorded with Ricque Franks, who isn't the original duet partner, the songs still sound fairly comparable to the originals. "In Your Eyes" is another nice ballad with his typical love-theme, but slightly different than his other hits. There are about six nice ballads in this compilation, but I just about skipped through his non-ballads. Some artists are strictly balladeers and Dan Hill is about as "balladeer" as you can get. Dan Hill's music is somewhere between Barry Manilow and Joe Cocker, so if you're into the mellow/raspy voice ballads, you definitely will enjoy this one.

I was disappointed that Dan Hill Hit Song the Dance of Love was NOT included in this collection of his hits i thought this was a little misleadung, This CD should have had all of his hits on it. Again i was disappointed

1 out of 5 stars 1 because there's no zero.......2006-02-05

I wonder how many people have a song that by the 2nd time they hear it, they can't change the station on the radio fast enough. "Sometimes When We Touch" is that song for me.

1 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits? NOT.......2004-06-10

Dan Hill had two top 40 hits and ten hits on the adult contemporary chart from 1977 to 1994. Of the tracks on this album, only three are in either category "Sometimes When We Touch", "All I See Is Your Face", and one of his two duets with Rique Franks that charted, "In Your Eyes". The rest of the CD contains an alternate version of "Sometimes When We Touch", two new versions of 80's hits, and six non-charted songs. If you're looking for a good collection of Dan Hill's charted hits, this is NOT it!

Album Description

This 1986 completely improvised one-man show at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles is the essence of Bobby McFerrin's magic. Using only his pliable voice and his body as percussion instrument, McFerrin lets his fertile imagination and vast musical knowledge run in free-association overdrive, dipping into jazz tunes, arias and Beatle songs along the way. Wayne Shorter joins him for a duet on Miles Davis's "Walkin'".

Added to this remarkable concert are the two videos that McFerrin made in support of his "Simple Pleasures" album, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and a tour-de-force "Good Lovin'". Total running time is 55 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS BAD!.......2005-05-29

I was chokin' to death when I heard this which I checked off from a library near Fulton County 'cross Roswell GA. It has a full blast and has amazing songs in it that I loved from: Turtle Shoes, Talkin' Thru My Body, Walkin, Beverly Hills Blues, Another Night in Tunisha, etc.

This is sumthin I gotta have if I luv the man and 'specially fans to George Benson, Miles Davis, The Temptations, Herbie Hancock, Kanye West, The Manhattan Transfer, Wynton Marsalis, among others especially my main man and inspiration Mr. Quincy Jones.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby is in a class by himself on this album...........2004-06-10

Sigh, I long for the early days of Bobby McFerrin and this album reiterates that opinion for me. This is an unbelieveably beautiful, innovative, humorous, creative and unique little album that introduced Bobby to the world. This man who has the unusual talent/ability to sing two (count them, TWO) notes at one time, mimic virtually every musical instrument known, impersonate other famous singers, and come up with wonderfully catchy and innovative covers of well-known songs does not fail us on this CD!

"Thinkin' About Your Body" kicks it all off. The whole time I listened to the song I tried to figure out how he could possibly provide not only all of the instrumentation using only his voice and body, as well as all of the vocalizations! It sounded like there were 20 Bobbys up there on stage and not just one! Amazing! The rest of the album featured the brilliant Bobby and some special guests who "dropped in." "Another Night in Tunisia" features The Manhatten Transfer. The hysterical "Beverly Hills Blues" features the wonderful Robin Williams. Check this wonderful, melodious album out. There is something for everybody, and it is lives up to its "Spontaneous" title.

5 out of 5 stars An essential recording of an essential artist.......2004-01-20

As time goes on, it becomes ever apparent that Bobby McFerrin was the best young jazz singer of the past 20 years; and classical music's gain is the jazz world's loss. My personal favorite of Mr. McFerrin's portfolio is "Medicine Music"; but for pure "chops", this is his "piece d'resistance." The thing that amazes me about him as a singer is that he must have about a 4 octave range; and it sounds like that's the case because he figured out how to free the restrictions brought on by his larynx. "From Me to You" sticks out in memory, as does his impromptu riff with Robin Williams on "Beverly Hills Blues." Highly recommended, not so much for the end product, but for the parts that make up the whole.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!.......2002-06-14

From start to finish, this is Bobby McFerrin's finest release of the eighties! From the first track, "Thinkin' About Your Body", with its simple lyrics and wooderful tune, to the catchy closing track "Mañana Iguana", this album shows off Bobby's unmatched vocal (and other) talents. Besides playing with guest musicians on a few tracks ("Turtle Shoes" with Herbie Hancock, "Another Night In Tunisia" with Manhattan Transfer, "Walkin" with Wayne Shorter, and in an amusing appearance, Robin Williams in "Beverly Hills Blues), there's a cover of The Beatles "From Me To You" that even Beatles fans will like. If you're not a Bobby McFerrin fan, after the purchase of this album you will be!

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS IT!.......2000-01-27

If you have to get only one Bobby McFerrin album, this is the one. The later _Simple Pleasures_ is slicker, more commercial, and better suited to a wider audience, but this disc showcases his vocal talents at their truest and best. Most of the cuts are live and unaccompanied, though there are three duets and a smashing rendition of "Another Night in Tunisia" with Manhattan Transfer (at least according to Amazon; on my original cassettes, that cut is on the _Simple Pleasures_ album).

Duets with Herbie Hancock on piano and Wayne Shorter on soprano sax ("Turtle Shoes" and "Walkin' " respectively) are fine. The collaboration with Robin Williams, "Beverly Hills Blues," is just plain fun, as is the playful throwaway "Manana Iguana" (how did that ever make it onto the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" best-of collection?). McFerrin does another excellent cover of a Beatles tune whose pallid original would seem to have made it a poor choice, "From Me to You."

But for me, the best cuts on this disc are the utterly infectious "Thinkin' About Your Body"; the sharp, bluesy rendition of Joan Armatrading's "Opportunity"; and "I Hear Music," the best McFerrin/audience collaboration on record (although I've heard and participated in much better examples, alas).

Get this one for its musical artistry and sheer joy of life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Early beautiful meditative Cage.......2005-01-26

You will not be disappointed or dismissive of this early music, primarily for prepared piano, an instrument that has sort of fallen out of existence. I know of no vigorous repertoire that had followed Cage's innovations. The idea for placing nuts and bolts, woodscrews and erasers between the piano's internal strings was from Henry Cowell, a piano timbral innovator in his own right. Cage developed the instrument as an accompaniment to the performances of Merce Cunningham dance in the early Forties, and the idea simple took off toward theatre, toward performance art and associative images, Lincoln Kirstein also commissioned works from Cage. Well here you get the full weight of this repertoire, and my favorite is "Perilous Night", it reveals the "subjectivity" residing in Cage despite his numerous attempts to circumvent his persona, Well it comes through here although you always sense that timbre and rhythm remain the primary focus of this early music. Also the un=prepared works, single exposed threadbare lines are what interested early Cage .The timbral differences of the piano preparation are interesting in and of itself and seem to engage concept and image;as "prelude and meditation",a minimal work of three four lines, only a few strings are prepared, or the "Music for Marcel Duchamp" where only the middle register of the piano is utilized with a single melody written in alto clef. This work has more a lyric interest yet having a deeply sombre feel to it.

The more expansive "Sonatas and Interludes" are all here, and there are now dozens of recordings,(like a standard within the repertoire,as Chopin's "preludes") and some play them fast(Joshua Pierce) others slow. I prefer the John Tilbury, Decca recording (now unavailable) but here as well the renderings/readings are quite engaging. The negative feature to all this music is that the timbre seems to never suggest anything more than what it is, it is like anything remains beautiful. Perhaps that is why there has not been a "thousand flowers" blooming from this instrument. It has astatic quality to it,one-dimensional. Cage you feel knew this and did introduce as much variety, distributions of densities, and rhythms, textures, and the structural plan as well adheres to maintaining an agenda for variety. The "Sonatas" here being the primary focus, the exposition, and the "Interludes" the digression relief from the gestural whole.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, terrific performance.......1999-12-14

This is an interesting collection of works played with wonderful warmth and character by Peter Serkin. The two Stravinsky pieces have never sounded better, and the Wolpe Passacaglia is a wonderful, exciting piece. Most 20th century music may not be easy listening, but the music on this CD is both palatable and under-performed. Well worth listening to.

        Album Description

This is music from "The Greatest Generation." Beautiful and haunting melodies from World War II expressed hopes and dreams, and created songs that have become classics.

This recording continues Jim Gibson's popular solo piano tradition--combining the timeless appeal of classical music, the free, improvisational spirit of jazz, and the melodic focus of new-age pianists. It's a blend that creates a relaxing, wonderful new appreciation of these classic popular songs.

The forties are gone . . . but these melodies live on.

5 out of 5 stars Melodies We Love: The Forties.......2004-06-19

This CD has a VERY romantic sound-definitely great mood setting music for a laid back dinner for two. It also has great public appeal. My husband plays it in his art gallery and people hum or sing along with the music commenting that they haven't heard good songs like Gibson's in a long time. Certainly not a sound available on any radio stations today.

5 out of 5 stars First rate musicianship.......2001-09-21

Jim Gibson is an exceptional talent. His approach to Popular Solo Piano is unique... REAL MUSIC, not renditions that are "elevator" or "vanilla" or "trite". Rich harmonies, voicings and counterpoint, along with thoughtful Rubato sections and mood/tempo changes hold your attention without being overpowering. BUT... if you "listen seriously" to his inventiveness and musicality, your interest will be piqued by the clever use of hints of the classics, modern harmonic substitutions and melodic sequences. The most mundane of melodies takes on a new life not before imagined!
One album WILL lead you to another - your problem will be

5 out of 5 stars Goes great with coffee.......2001-06-15

I own a coffee and tea shop and I frequently play this CD in the shop. I don't remember where I got it, but I am amazed at the number of customers who come up to me to find out "what that wonderful music is." It's quiet, but not boring, and the songs are great. My customers love it, and so do I. I'm glad to find it on Amazon.com, so I can send people here to buy it!
