The twisted cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is a statement of intent, while the cool jazz riffs from the band's trumpet player are part of what makes tracks like "Daria," "It's Coming Down," and "Frank Sinatra" so original. "The Distance" is a funked-up jam with a Chili Peppers chorus. --Jeff Bateman

it puts a smile on my face.......2007-06-25
This album really makes me happy. When I need to get a smile from myself or just about anybody else, I can just put on "I Will Survive." Truly, the entire album is big fun. Tons of great lyrics. Great horn. Groovy vocals. Just a really fun album.
Excellent.......2007-04-24
I tell you, to fully appreciate Cake, you need a decent pair of headphones or speakers. Fashion Nugget has awesome bass, guitar lines, and decent sound and a lot going on. It's easy to miss a lot of the details that make Cake so good, they pack a huge hit at times, but if you miss it, Cake isn't as good as they really are.
Enough of that, the music is great. There's country, jazz, rock, the band's sound is very unique. The horn is a great addition, as well as the drums, the many guitar lines, John actually sings, and the bass lines. Anybody who wants bass will like Fashion Nugget's basslines. The lyrics are pretty creative, but sometimes hard to figure out. Any creative lyrics takes a whlie to realize it's genius. No looking on Wikipedia or Arisfacts first, _______ cheaters!
Okay, I realize I can't do much after other people explained it better, but I think it's good. This one is sort of a gamble, try downloading a few songs (please buy, support the artist, you __________). Don't rely on sound samples on this one much, beacuse the sound will sound so much like _______, and you need good sound to do Fashion Nugget justice. Don't even bother with them, although iTunes has good samples, more than Amazon (ps iTunes is free). I'm stuck with amazon, because my internet _______ _________ _________. ________ AOL.
This is miles better than that bland waste Comfort Eagle. I might consider Prolonging The Magic (possibly the others).

Album Description
Las Vegas's 5-piece rock band follow more closely in the skull-jarring footsteps of Underoath and Senses Fail than those of their hometown contemporaries, The Killers and Panic! At The Disco. With their incredibly energetic live show, Escape The Fate have won over enthusiastic audiences on the 2006 Warped Tour, with sales of over 10,000 of their EP "There's No Sympathy For The Dead".

Worth the money.........2007-03-13
Honestly, I had every track on this CD before it was released. I paid for this album anyway, because I thought it was that good. A lesson that if you make good music people will support you anyway.
However, there are people who would not be happy in heaven. Who will tell you how sorry they are to have heard this disc, and rave about the EP.. which I don't understand, because I listened to them when they first debuted on Epitaph's homepage, and think they've only gotten better.
The only thing I found I did not like on the full length was that two of the songs I really liked on the EP (As You're Falling Down, and The Ransom.) were not present on their full length. I'd have liked them to replace 'The Day I Left The Whom' with 'As You're Falling Down'. That would have overall added one more heavy, and very powerful song to this album.
But, I guess if they put ALL the good songs on the album then nobody would buy the EP, and just wait for this CD. (I'd have bought the EP too if Hot Topic had it.. but they only had the full album. =[)
Everyone in the band excluding the drummer has a place in the vocals which makes for a wonderful harmony alongside the screaming guitars, and rhythmic drums. I found the lyrics to actually be nice contrary to what others have posted; at times they do strike a dull note I'll admit.
Some of the songs are a little more mainstream rock sounding such as Situations, and the single Not Good Enough For Truth In Cliche. So if a little variation does not scare you go ahead and pick this album up.

Impressive Full-Length Debut.......2007-01-05
I've read a lot of the negative reviews for Escape The Fate's new CD Dying Is Your Latest Fashion. Apparently just because they are in the whole "emo" scene all their material must suck. I'm not an "emo/screamo" fan, but this is still an impressive release.
Lyrics are hit and miss. The writing is really good in some parts and just cheesy in others. Musically though, this is very strong. The guitars are pretty good for this to be their first full-length CD ("There's No Sympathy For The Dead" is a track that showcases some of the better guitar work.) The vocals are what impresses me the most. Although the lyrics might at times be subpar the vocals are always top notch. The flow between clean and scream vocals is really tight. They employ clean vocals, the higher pitch "screamo"-type voices, and death vocals, all which work flawlessly.
"The Guillotine" and "There's No Sympathy For The Dead" can both be found on their debut EP and "Situations" can be found on the Unsound compilation from Epitaph Records. So I already knew somewhat of what to expect from this band. "Reverse This Curse" is my personal favorite track. All the tracks are solid so you don't need to use the skip button for this release.
Listening to the CD you can tell they went for a home run at their first at bat with this release. They have the confindence and attitude of a band that has been around for years. With a little maturing and some improvement to some of the songwriting, Escape The Fate has the chance to really make it big. Don't pigeonhole this band with all the other emo/screamo acts out there. Looking at some of the reviews I think that is what some of these reviewers have done. Give this a chance, you may or may not like it, but don't judge it without actually listening to it and just lump it in with the some of the other junk that is out there. This CD is a bright spot in a very oversaturated and underachieving genre.
You should really buy this. .......2006-10-25
This is the best cd ever! If you are in to the emo/screamo/nu-metal/hardcore/etc you will love it. I love all the lyrics. The songs have amazing guitar riffs and the vocals are awesome. Their music makes you want to jump up and down and scream.
=/.......2006-10-09
I have to say that the EP was much, much, much better. This cd just doesn't live up to what I thought it would be. There are a few good songs, but overall it's just an okay album.. nothing too amazing sry2say.
Please enter a title for your review.......2006-10-01
It's ridiculous that any band would even bother recording and releasing such weak bland redundant excuses for songs, but what's especially disconcerting, yet somehow not that surprising, is that it's coming from a band that earlier this year released an ep of perfectly decent alt-rock emo tunes. It's not really even that i'm mourning a lack of talent in the faux-edgy music scene, but just the complete lack of awareness or regard for the difference between a song that has an actual hook, something distinctive in it that makes you want to hear it again, and just rehashing formulas, boring basic rigid commercial conventions without even 1% of variation to make it marginally interesting. These guys wrote 5 decent semi-interesting tunes on the ep, now on the album they just don't care anymore, they're just rewriting other bands songs, following formulas like it's their job, like they never knew the difference between hooks and plodding non-melodies, as if it was just blind luck that they wrote actual songs on the ep.

Opening at the tail end of 1948, Kiss Me, Kate became an instant classic--and amazingly didn't receive a full-scale revival until 1999. All the more reason to revel in its original version. With its cunning play-within-a-play premise (a musical update of The Taming of the Shrew reverberates in backstage feuds), brilliant mix of high and low comedy, and of course some of Cole Porter's better-known songs--"So in Love," "I Hate Men," Too Darn Hot," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)"--Kiss Me, Kate remains a funny, zesty hall of mirrors. Hard as you may try to find a fly in the ointment, there's no fault with the cast either--Patricia Morison, for instance, is a perfectly petulant Lilli Vanessi. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
The best and maybe the last CD of this great musical........2006-02-20
Now is the perfect time to buy the CD of this.
Sony's transfer engineers used state-of-the-art restoration software to remove the roughness and surface noise from the originals, but (thankfully) they resisted the urge to tart-up the sound with artificial reverb, faux stereo, and thundering bass. This is by far the best-sounding CD of this ever released, and it may be the last.
The age of music ownership in America could be drawing to a close. Five years from now, this music may only be available by download, you might only be "borrowing" it, and it probably won't come with the the authentic cover art or the 26-page booklet.

Beautiful remastering of historic original cast recording.......2004-05-24
Recorded in January 1949, this album of KISS ME KATE has remained in print adn a steady best-seller for over 50 years now.
The sound on this newly remastered CD is crisp and clear and easily surpasses all previous issues. Sony even uses the original artwork from the very first LP release.
The performances remain as fresh as ever. Alfred Drake was Broadway's top leading man and sounds just glorious. Pat Morrison had less of a career but sounds just perfect as Lilli. Lisa Kirk is wonderful as Lois, and Harold Lang makes the most of his few moments on the record as her boyfriend, Bill. In an unusual move these peopel reunited 10 years later to re-record the score for Capitol in true stereo. They still sound great on that recording (on CD as part of the Broadway Angel series) but the performances are fresher on this recording made just 2 weeks after KIS ME KATE had opened on Broadway to rave reviews.
The CD booklet has good info about the show, though curiously, no synopsis. There are, however, a half dozen pictures of the original production. This edition featureds longer takes of "We Open in Venice", "I Hate Men" and "Too Darn Hot" though the total extra music adds but a minute to the album's running time. A bonus track of the Overture dates from a 1958 stereo recording by Lehman Engle.
KISS ME KATE was the first Tony Award winner for Best Musical (1949). The 1999 revival won a Tony for Best Revival.
the peerless original cast.......2004-03-04
KISS ME KATE is still regarded as Cole Porter's greatest musical; a charming backstage story detailing feuding ex-spouses Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham as they star in a musical version of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew".
Very rarely has the score been bettered than the original 1949 cast album, reissued here on the Columbia Broadway Masterworks label. Patricia Morison plays Lilli, with Alfred Drake (OKLAHOMA!, KISMET, GIGI) as Fred, the feuding, ego-ridden leads. Lisa Kirk (ALLEGRO, MACK AND MABEL) is the sexy young starlet Lois, with Harold Lang (PAL JOEY) as her caddish boyfriend Bill.
KISS ME KATE opened at the New Century Theatre on Broadway in 1949, making history in its run of over 1000 performances. Patricia Morison is perfectly-suited to the role of Lilli. She offers a glowing rendition of "So in Love", whilst her duet with Alfred Drake in the tongue-in-cheek "Wunderbar" is sublime. Lisa Kirk gets three of the big showstoppers ("Why Can't You Behave?", "Tom Dick or Harry" and "Always True to You in My Fashion"), and nails each and every one. Harold Lang was a better dancer than he ever was as a singer, but is quite good on this disc.
A must-own.
Who Put The Shake In Shakespeare?.......2001-04-11
Who put the 'shake' in 'Shakespeare'? Cole Porter, of course! Kiss Me Kate is the best of his musicals, and this recording is the best of the recordings! The original Broadway cast performs with much old-style, vaudeville jazz!
The story is set in a Baltimore theatre where a divorced couple, Fred Graham and Lilli Vannessi, are in the two leading roles of a musical version of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Fred currently dates a colorful light-heart named Lois Lane, while Lilli is about to head off to get maried in the south. Lois, by the way, will 'always be true' to her boyfriend, the gambling player Bill Calhoun. The story takes off from there!
The show originaly opened on Broadway in 1948. It's timelessness has still not worn off after so many years. The classic script by Bela and Sam Spewack, and the best music of Cole Porter, we cannot fail! The show has been performed since then in many many countries, and has been performed in many languages! It has only recently been revived on Broadway.
Kiss Me Kate has become a staple of classic Broadway, and this is the cast that will not be outdone. Patricia Morrison is a perfect, operatic, Lilli Vanesi. She is strong, yet thoughtful. Her voice fills the CD with a lively 'Wunderbar' and the raging 'I Hate Men.' Alfred Drake is a manly and appealing Fred Graham who will have you laughing out loud! His 'Where Is the Live...?' is yet to be surpassed. Harold Lang is a sexy, and hypnotic Bill Calhoun. He takes the role for himself, and his 'Bianca' is done to the point of perfection! His voice is misty and self-confident, and has the qualities all Bill Calhoun's should. And of course, there will be no one as good as Lisa Kirk for the role of Lois Lane! Her tongue-in-cheek performance on this CD is flawless! She is teasing, sympathetic, funny, and has the right voice to win her part! I can't imagine anyone who can do what she has done with 'Alway True to You' and 'Why Can't You Behave.' The classic character songs are very nice! The balladic, and melodic 'So In Love' will ring in your head. 'We Open In Venice' will make you dance! And 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare'(performed with much humor by Jack Diamond and Harry Clark) will give you a laugh the next time you read 'Romeo.' You won't be disapointed!
The nostalgic quality of the 40's is alive and well in this recording. Columbia has done a great job restoring the work, and the scratching that were a part of the original releases. The sound quality is crisp and clear, and the music sounds wonderful! The magic hasn't worn out yet!
There have been a few more recordings of the work, including a complete London recording, and the new Broadway revival cast. None can do as well as the original recording, however. In the revival recordng, however, they come close. Brian Stokes Mitchell has the voice for Fred, but runs through his lines a bit fast, and without much enthusiasm. And the orchestrations for the new recording are a bit overdone, and they sound more like PBS's Jazz, than Broadway.
Altogether, this is great recording. I was very pleased with my buy, and hope that you will add it to your collection right away! It's time to Brush Up Your Shakespeare!
TIMELESS BROADWAY SHOW.......2001-01-11
COLE PORTER'S most famous musical play hasn't lost none of it's power over the years;it's one of those few shows in which all the elements clicks:cast, songs, libretto, to make a great entertainment product.Without getting to cynical,KISS ME KATE has enough good songs to fill 3 BROADWAY shows of today ,and i am not kidding,it's a fact. While the revival is also of interest,it's always a delight to hear the original with PATRICIA MORRISSON and ALFRED DRAKE, both terrific in their parts.I can assure you that you'll play this record more than twice. It's not only WUNDERBAR ,it's WONDERFUL!You can't actually single out one number because they are all good. All right, if we have to choose one, it's SO IN LOVE.

An Absolute Must In Your CD Collection.......2007-06-25
I was 10 when this was first released and I must admit I wore out the grooves in the vynil with my constant playing. Now 27 years later I have finally repurchased it on CD and I am very happy I did. I love every song on this release and it absolutely rocks, whether the song has a New Wave flavor or is straight-up Alice Cooper rock-n-roll.
Alice is quite a character and it shows in his lyrics and delivery. Not the best vocalist, but hey, does one have to be in order to be a great rock performer? I will answer that for you with a resounding NO!
This is a much overlooked classic and I plan on introducing it to my friends that totally missed it the first time around.
A mixed bag..........2007-06-21
After the great "From the Inside" album, Alice Cooper seemed to be looking for a new direction. This album is basically an experiment in adopting the 80's "new wave" style. The results are inconsistant. There are a handfull of good songs here, and a lot that fall pretty flat.
The album opens with "talk Talk", a remake of The Music Machine's 60's garage-punk classic. It's perfect material for Alice, and he turns in a great sneering performance. Next comes "Clones", a Devo-esque song. It's a good solid song.
My big complaint with this album is that a lot of songs seem like filler ("Aspirin Damage", "Model Citizen", "Nuclear Infected" and "Headlines"). Alice has always been known for his sense of humor, but these songs border on being cheesy, novelty items.
But if you can get through all that, there are 2 songs that make this CD a "must-have" (in my opinion). "Leather Boots" is great. It's got sly, ironic lyrics about power and fear. It's got an interesting mix of raunchy and twangy guitars, and backing vocals from Flo and Eddie (from the Turtles and the Mothers of Invention). What more could you want?
The other masterpiece is called "Dance Yourself to Death". This could be my all-time favorite Alice Cooper song. Unlike most of this album, It has a timeless quality. The twin-guitar arrangement would sound at home on "Billion Dollar Babies". The lyrics are funny, but in a witty, sardonic way. It's a song about a teenager who's embarrassed by his parents, who try too hard to be cool. The chorus is classic - "I get a kiss goodbye. I get all numb and high, from all the smoke left on their breath. I smile and wish them well, and then I pray like Hell, they go and dance themselves to death."
All-in-all, the high points outweigh the low. I wouldn't reccomend this as an introduction to Alice, but if you already like has work, buy this.
this album rocks!!!.......2006-12-03
This is one of the best alice albums, every song is very cool.I am a huge alice fan and have loved every thing that he did.flush the fashion has a sound totally unique to it's self.I hope the coop keeps rocking for a long time to come and keeps cranking out the albums, i will buy them all.
If you dont have the album, get it you wont be sorry.
New Wave Alice, Old School Snide.......2006-11-15
As a pre-note, this particular disc is an unnecessarily expensive import, yet has no additional music from the original release. If you are interested in getting this disc, find a cheaper used copy instead.
Over the course of his career, Alice Cooper has left his mark on a number of musical niches, sometimes carving new ones of his own. One thing that has been fairly consistent has been his biting and incisive sense of humor, perhaps nowhere more so than on this album. The humor is usually black to very black to be sure, but it's not the kind of creepy humor of "Steven". In effect, this album (along with "Special Forces" and "Zipper Catches Skin") is Alice at his jolliest, taking great glee in combining his particularly trenchant lyrics for the most part with early-80s New Wave musical compositions.
The album opens with a 60s cover, "Talk Talk" that tropes on one of Alice's favorite themes, gossip and public perception. The song itself is straightforward, and nothing less than infectious.
However, delightful as the song is, "Clones," which follows it, is even more fun. Apparently based on a TV show, the song is about, yes, clones. A nice fuzzy guitar tone, guitar harmonics, effective little keyboard flourishes and that generally somewhat undercelebrated aspect of Alice, his vocals. We all know that he can turn a squeamish, sneery phrase like no other, and his sarcasm is apparent here as well. And yet, in the main body of the song, he manages to have a kind of clone-like dazedness in his voice which makes the rather unhappy lyrics resonate effectively. Very well put together.
"Pain," starts with a soulful little piano flourish, and then launches into what may be the lyrical model for "Sad but True," by Metallica. Musically, this song probably more than any other approaches the "Welcome to My Nightmare" / "Goes to Hell" era, though less slickly produced. Again, it's particularly Alice's delivery throughout--the trademark snide asides, but also a wealth of other vocal flourishes that elevate the song from a novelty or gratuitous litany of types of pain (the character of "Pain" is the narrator of the song) into something more expansive or effective.
"Leather Boots," at 1'36" is a quirky, nasty little piece of psychopathology hidden under extremely poppy music with country overtones, handclaps, and even a cheesy little drum machine fill. Without a doubt, the most leering, toothy little monster on the album.
"Aspirin Damage," as the name might suggest, is about the dreaded effects of taking too much damage. One wonders if the real topic of the song is aspirin. In any case, this is little more than a novelty song, albeit quite cute and harmless.
"Nuclear Infected," is similarly very much in the novelty direction, except for the fact that the lyrics are ridiculously funny, and trace the life of someone who is literally radioactive--"When I'm happy I glow yellow, when I'm sad, I glow blue .." He wants to live on Three Mile Island, because it's tidy and clean there. Despite the trenchantly amusing nature of these lyrics ("Don't get me to sneeze"), the song is still another in that long line of meditations by Alice about public figures who are labeled "toxic."
"Grim Facts," which opens with a boy "who's got a .38 hidden in his desk," covers a somewhat conventional gamut of social ills in this fairly straightforward rocker. "Teenage Lament `74" was probably more incisive, but the song provides more than its share of sleazy innuendo. Great fun.
"Model Citizen," makes explicit what "Nuclear Infected" implied, taking another tour through public perception, delivered with boppy rock, gushing choir, and especially Alicesque lyrics. "I'm a martyr and I'm a sadist. Might be the savior here to save us. I'm a friend of Sammy Davis ... casually." How can you not like such a combination? In particular, this song points in the direction of "Special Forces" to come.
"Dance Yourself to Death" might be the first song (at least in mainstream music) that takes the standpoint of the confused generation of children of the 60s hippies. Though not officially anti-PC, Alice once again shows himself capable of getting into the "youth mindset" that would eventually inform, say, "Pump up the Volume."
"Headlines" one last time essays the life of publicity, with another solid rocker and biting lyrics. The opening riff in particular sounds like that James Gang song (you'll know the one), though the chorus is completely different.
In the final analysis, of this album, "Special Forces" and "Zipper Catches Skin" (the three kind of hang together), this is the most socially conscious and, because of the particular musical personnel, has a sort of hang-together feel to the music as well. The album is not amazingly strong and, of course, the charm of the lyrics (like most near-novelty songs) only lasts so long. If for some reason you are wondering what that Alice Cooper thing is all about, this is probably not the place to start. But if you want a good old-fashioned 80s-style romp through the tulips with a weed-whacker and rotor-tiller, it could hardly hurt to have this twisted little charmer hanging out in the CD collection.
I'm A Friend Of Vincent Damon Furnier.....Casually........2006-07-27
Vincent Damon Furnier (aka. Alice Cooper) is a man of many styles, and as a result he has been able to successfully adapt to the constantly changing musical trends. "Alice Cooper" originally started out as a "jam band" but with theatrics not associated or seen in other "jam bands" at that time; and Vincent has always critiqued and satired his society, so it should've come as no surprise when Vincent morphed his sound once more as the 1980's began. "New Wave" and "Punk" music was popular, and Vincent was not going to let his chance at making a statement about the present culture slip past him. AC was making "New Wave" music as early as the "Lace & Whiskey" album, so once again, this new sound should've been no surprise.
AC employed Roy Thomas Baker of Cars and Queen fame to produce this album. AC also hired Davey Johnstone (of Elton John fame), Fred Mandel (who later worked with Queen and Supertramp), and long time associate Dennis Conway. "New Wave" AC was now a done deal! "Flush the Fashion '80" introduces the shorter haired, more "military" Alice. If you think AC looked deranged in the early '70s, take a look at pictures of him from the early '80s, now that is freaky! It was also around this time that AC started swigging the juice again (he had been sober for about a year). "FTF" is a very short album. There is no song longer than 4 minutes, most of the songs are 3 minutes in length. The record was a success as it did chart in the top 50 US Billboard (#44), and had a top 40 hit with "Clones(We're All)" (#40).
The album opens with "Talk Talk", a song penned by Sean Bonniwell that was a hit for his band "Music Machine" in the mid '60s. AC does Sean proud as he updates the song but stays faithful to its sound. The next tune, "Clones(We're All)" was written by David Carron (RIP),which was inspired by the late '70s TV movie "Clones". The line, "Six is having problems adjusting to his clone status", is directly from the movie. This song soldified AC's "New Wave" style. It sounds alot like the Gary Numan song "Cars". "Pain" sounds more like "Welcome To My Nightmare" AC. "Leather Boots" is my favorite song off the album, with great lyrics like:
I saw a cop, he looked pretty shot
By some criminals, left there to rot
I took a look, no one around
I put on his boots and stomped on the ground
Stood so tall and felt so strong
I wanted to be just like him
So I could hurt somebody
LOL! AC at his best IMHO! "Aspirin Damage", "Nuclear Infected" and "Grim Facts" are all solid, rockin' tunes with great lyrics. "Model Citizen" sounds like it could be a leftover from the "Billion Dollar Babies" album. Another fantastic song with AC being the ultimate politician:
Be an Arab, be a Jew
Be a boxing kangaroo
Beat yourself all black and blue
I don't care!
"Dance Yourself To Death" is another paean to teenagers as well as a jab to the hippie parents:
I get a kiss good-bye
I get all numb and high
From all the smoke left on their breath
I smile and wish them well
Then I pray like hell
They go and dance themselves to death!
The last song, "Headlines" proves AC's philosophy that there is no such thing as bad press:
Called a conference with the press
Announced my marriage plans in a wedding dress
Climb a building at six-below
On New Year's Eve without a stitch of clothes
I wanna be in the headlines
Anything to be in the headlines.
I LOVE this album! This a fantastic album with great lyrics and rockin' tunes. IMHO this album is EASILY in the Top 5 Alice Cooper records so far released. To some, this album is The Best Alice Cooper album so far released! This is straight ahead, rock-n-roll/New Wave hybrid music with Vincent's sarcsatic humour and wit brightly shining through. This is also the first album since "School's Out" without a ballad. Alice Cooper did tour for this album, and during the tour his band was introduced as the "Hostages". AC would delve further into his new persona and sound on his next album "Special Forces" (another fantastic album worth getting). Do yourself a favor and don't skip this period of the eclectic Vincent Furnier. Always remember to "Flush the Fashion" when your done!

The Nitty Grittys at Their Prime.......2006-01-14
It is unfortunate that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is often overlooked when one considers that they, along with the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, The Dillard and Clark Expedition, Poco, Hearts and Flowers, and Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band, were in the forefront of the California Country Rock scene. Left behind in the wake of the Burritos, and even Poco, whom they were always as good as, if not better, the Dirt Band member credentials were always - and still are - impeccable. a barely out-of-his-teens Jeff Hanna befriended another teenager by the name of Jackson Browne, who with Hanna and Jimmie Fadden was a founding member of the Dirt Band. Hanna and another early Dirt Band player Chris Darrow worked alongside Linda Ronstadt in an brief hiatus. Hanna also played alongside Bernie Leadon in Ronstadt's band as well - if he had stayed longer, he might very well had become a founding father of the Eagles. As things turned out, it was Leadon who would later briefly replace John McEuen in the Dirt Band.
Jimmy Ibbotson was with Skip Battin (Byrds) in Evergreen Blueshoes, and had briefly auditioned for Poco, (beaten out by Randy Meisner)before signing on to the Dirt Band in time for "House at Pooh-Corner", "Some of Shelly's Blues", and "Mr. Bojangles".
Moving to Colorado in the wake of the Eagles, Poco, and Firefall the Dirt Band continued in its eclectic blend of Folk, Rock and Country for many, many years - even after Hanna moved to Nashville. Indeed on the album, "Partners, Brothers, and Friends", the second cd of this two-album set, Hanna sings those famous lines: "Is it Folk, or Rock, or Country?" Which while highlighting the versatility of the Nittys has also tended to make them sadly obscure at times.
The two albums, "Plain Dirt Fashion" and "Partners, Brothers, and Friends" were recorded at a very productive time in the Dirt Band's history - the early and mid 1980s, as they increasingly became more countrified rather than country rock. It was also a joyous time for the band, as it marked the return of Jimmie Ibbotson to its ranks, and just in time for their number one rendition of Rodney Crowell's "Long Hard Road".
Some of the best Country and Country Rock moments of the band are captured on both CDs - the Hanna-Carpenter-Parsons-Carpenter "It Must Be Love" (yes, Bob Carpenter's marriage to Gretchen Parsons brought another element of California Country Rock History to the band's glorified past; she was the widow of Gram) the song itself has that classic California Country Guitar sound courtesy of Hanna; "High Horse", "You Ought to Run with Me", a hard rocking cover of "The Boss's" "Cadillac Ranch" that is still an encore highlight of Dirt Band shows, "Modern Day Romance", "Other Side of the Hill", "Partners, Brothers, and Friends", "Redneck Riviera", represent the Country Rock sounds of the band, while Jimmy Ibbotson brings in the element of the Old West and some Bluegrass in "Telluride" and "Old Upright Piano". I'm not too sure about their cover of Meatloaf's "Two Out Of Three" though - it sounded too typical of Nashville pablum at the time. The two cds represent a fine moment in Dirt Band music, right before the long hiatus of John McEuen, the brief arrival of Leadon, and chugging along very well as a foursome (think "Live 2 5")
It remains to be seen how after recent successes, i.e., a third "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album, an appearance on the Johnny Cash Tribute concert, and of course, Rascal Flats' recent number 1 success with Hanna's "The Broken Road" what the Dirt Band's future will be - Jimmy Ibbotson has once again departed the band, taking with him those lead and harmony vocals so reminiscent of Richie Furay's or Randy Meisner's (memo to Jeff and John - consider Randy Meisner - after all, think of how "Take It to the Limit" would score appreciatively with Dirt Band audiences, not to mention Meisner's own considerable songwriting skills). Whatever happens, you can be sure that the Dirt Band will carry on.
Two great NGDB records on one CD.......2005-02-16
I have Plain Dirt Fashion and Partners, Brothers And Friends on LP. Now that these two classic Nitty Gritty Dirt Band records are available on one CD, I bought the CD version. This music is as great as it was in the mid-'80s, when NGDB originally recorded it.
"Long Hard Road", written by Rodney Crowell(the writer of NGDB's 1980 hit "An American Dream"), was the Dirt Band's first #1 country song, and it has always been one of my favorites. I especially like this line: "When the world was on our radio, hard work was on our minds/We lived our day to day in Plain Dirt Fashion." "Long Hard Road" by itself shows the Dirt Band's ability to pick a well-crafted song. The record's most fun moments, however, are provided by NGDB's Jimmy Ibbotson. Ibbotson's "High Horse", a driving, bouncy song, was a huge hit, as was his wisecracking celebration of the band's first 20 years, "Partners, Brothers And Friends". These two songs are also among my favorite NGDB songs. Still another excellent Ibbotson song is "Telluride", about life in the Colorado gold-mining town("Take the gold into Telluride"). Why "Telluride" didn't get radio airplay I'll never figure out. It's a great song--I think it's certainly up there with Ibbotson's "Ripplin' Waters"(from NGDB's album Dream) and NGDB's '70s classic hit "Mr. Bojangles". NGDB's rocking version of "Cadillac Ranch" is well done and in my opinion surpasses Bruce Springsteen's original. The reflective songs "Home Again In My Heart" and "Old Upright Piano", the romantic ballad "I Love Only You", the rodeo song "The Other Side Of The Hill", and Steve Goodman's humorous song "Video Tape"("If your life was on video tape/Wouldn't everything be alright") are also highlights.
In my opinion Plain Dirt Fashion and Partners, Brothers And Friends, when they came out, represented a welcome return by the Dirt Band to a more countrified sound. Ibbotson's return to the Dirt Band in '83, after a seven-year absence, helped the band bounce back from an ill-advised switch to a pop direction and reclaim their country roots. Not only is Ibbotson a great songwriter, but he's an excellent musician as well--note his mandolin picking on "Telluride", for example. To go on, Jeff Hanna's guitar playing is exceptional in a lot of places(for instance, on "Partners, Brothers And Friends" and "Cadillac Ranch"). There's also some solid piano work by Bob Carpenter(as usual), Jimmie Fadden does excellent harmonica playing, and John McEuen plays some unbelievable banjo and fiddle parts on several of the songs. If you don't already have Plain Dirt Fashion and Partners, Brothers And Friends on LP, they're now both available on one CD. By all means, get the CD version and listen to it. There is a lot of great music here.
2 BEAUTIFUL albums on 1 CD - FINALLY.......2004-02-14
We finally get 2 great collections of work from the NGDB on one CD. About time. From the crystal clear notes of "Long Hard Road -(Sharecroppers Dream)" to the original "Partners Brothers and Friends," it is SO nice to finally hear these songs on CD. But quick, put the CD in and scan up to track #14. Does the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band get ANY better than they do on "Telluride?" I think not. Get this CD. Now.
Great Harmonies and Good Memories Here!.......2004-02-05
This CD combines two excellent albums from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands' mid-80's work. "Long Hard Road", one of my favorites, starts things off nicely. This song has some heartfelt, memorable lines..."Mama played the guitar then and Daddy made the saw blade bend and raindrops played the tin roof like a drum." Great phrasing too. Another all time favorite that should have gotten some airplay is "Old Upright Piano". This one will bring a tear to your eye. If you enjoyed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in your younger days, pick up this nice bargin. It is sure to make you smile. The musicianship and great harmonies shine through, even on the less memorable tunes.

"Don't be afraid of the language, I know you don't mean what you say," sings Clem Snide frontman Eef Barzelay in his distinctive brittle whine. Clearly, Barzelay is fascinated by double meanings and odd juxtapositions. His songs ruminate over sleeping in ashtrays, Elvis's long lost twin, and eating anger with mustard and wine; his personal memories twist pop culture like a pretzel, producing titles like "Joan Jett of Arc" (about his first love) and "Ancient Chinese Secret Blues" (a sleepy dirge that ends with Barzelay imploring "Calgon, take me away"). Yet Barzelay's examinations of love and happiness hit you more like mysterious and curious runes than murky hipster rants thanks to a certain wide-eyed perspective and the band's expertly textured music, which makes effective use of grand, soulful horns and subtle strings, plus various other instrumental touches. The hushed laments, bouncing rave-ups, and witty shuffles on the Brooklyn band's third album are unique and well crafted, setting Clem Snide apart from the "downtwang" scene. --Marc Greilsamer

Brilliant.......2005-02-09
Great songs, great album. This is the first Clem Snide CD I bought after after hearing one track on radio. Soft Spot followed and I also bought Your Favourite Music and You Were a Diamond. One or two tracks a bit 'iffy' but overall still a top effort by the band
tonight i feel like elvis longing for his longlost twin.......2002-04-23
This is just a great CD - smart, touching, weird and funny lyrics, haunting melodies, great instrumentation. It really manages to be different without becoming inaccesible. Nobody twists the English language as well as Clem Snide.
Clem Snide in Wisconsin.......2002-04-12
I was convinced by a friend to go see Clem Snide at the Miramar Theatre in Milwaukee, WI. I had never heard their music much less heard of them. They played with Jimmy's Comet and Mark Waldoch that night, and I must say it was the best [money] I've ever spent. I had no idea what to expect but walked away a huge fan. I even drove to Madison the next day to see them again. The music is AMAZING. Just when you think the song is gonna be slow, like "Don't Be Afraid of Your Anger," it turns out to be upbeat and silly. "Evil vs. Good" has some great horn and strings rifs, and "Moment in the Sun" makes me wanna sing along. "Long Lost Twin" cracks me up and makes me a little sad at the same time. I highly recommend listening to these guys. I didn't even know they existed and now I'm telling all my friends...
Sounds like Steve Malkmus with a violyn..........2002-01-09
I am not a big fan of the alt-country scene, but am a big fan of the lo-fi sound of Pavement (now Steven Malkmus solo) and the like. Clem Snide reminds me of a mellower, violyn-playing Steven Malkmus. Mellow folk-ish alternative with a country overtone, with quirky and at times amusing vocals, yet it maintains a certain intensity. Try his prior cd, Your Favorite Music, too.
Another great new disc for 2001!.......2001-12-29
This will easily make it onto my "Best of 2001" list for new music. I loved Clem Snide's 2000 release "Your Favorite Music" and this is a strong follow-up. Part alt-country, part indie-rock and part catchy pop tunes. The songs here, especially "Ice Cube" and "Joan Jett of Arc" are catchy and carefully crafted pop gems. The wonderful wordplay on these songs only makes them all that much more fun to listen to. Highly recommended.
