Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars SUSAN HAYWARD BELTS IT OUT.......2005-03-31

This CD is a rare treat for Susan Hayward fans - a chance to hear her do her own singing in the film "I'll Cry Tomorrow" based on the story of Lillian Roth, who battled alcoholism in her life. The sound quality is EXCELLENT and the CD includes extensive notes, and even includes unused tracks, such as the vocal efforts of studio vocalist Sandy Ellis, who was originally going to dub for Hayward. Many people are not aware that the real Lillian Roth was disapointed that her own voice tracks were not used for the film. But, Hayward surprised everyone with her surprisingly goodvocal range. The background music is exceptionally fineas well, and is all included here. This CD is a must-have for Susan Hayward fans - and lovers of fine film score music as well.

      Album Description

Much of the music currently promoted as jazz, whether instrumental or vocal, relies on self-dramatizing gestures: shouts and whispers, squeaks and honks, dizzying speeds, flurries of notes, empty virtuosity that soon grows tedious. Hanna and Phil aren't self-defined stars who demand the spotlight in their performances; they are musicians whose first obligation is to the song and to melodic improvisation. Rather than act out a lyric, Hanna may treat it with near-conversational informality, the result natural yet slyly persuasive. In her initial choruses, she sets out the song as a great melodist might - perhaps Johnny Hodges or Bobby Hackett - shining her light from behind the notes rather than overpowering them. Revisiting the music for a second chorus, she is freer but never self-indulgent, embellishing phrases, subtly improvising by placing a word over an unexpected note, stretching one phrase, delaying another. Her approach points up the beauties of first-rate material and hides the limitations of lesser songs, making the familiar seem fresh. Phil's rich sound, solid beat, and choice of notes are in the great tradition that stretches from Pops Foster to Paul Chambers. Jazz bassists still appear next-to-last in the solo order, but Phil makes the instrument sing, never treating it as an oversized guitar with an oddly deep voice. At fast tempos, he is agile but each note is precisely articulated. Although Phil is entirely at home with bebop, he offers all the support any rhythm section needs with a strong yet fluid 4 / 4 pulse. Like Hanna, he is concise, making a half-chorus more meaningful than another bassist's lengthy excursions. For these sessions, Hanna and Phil surrounded themselves with fine, sympathetic musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Negro Spirituals from a Soprano, Jeanette Thompson.......2006-02-09

I realy enjoyed this cd. It kinda took me back in the day. Although, I wasnt born during the time of the Negro Spirtituals, my spirit naturally gravitates to the calls of my ancestors. Jeanette Thompson brings a strong energy to the songs on the cd. If you like the Negro Spirituals from back in the day, you will enjoy this cd. If you like the sound of a Soprano, that will be a bonus. Sit back, relax and let your Soul remind you of just how far we have come, since the enslavement of a Afrikan people. 5 out of 5 stars How could one not wish for more?.......2003-08-30

I love and hate this cd. I love it because it thrills whom ever listens to it with the beautiful but neglected works of Arthur Sullivan that were not written in partnership with W.S. Gilbert. The recording and the quality of the preformances are fantastic. I especially loved 'The Emerald Isle' and 'The Beauty Stone'. It filled me with the desire to consume these operas en total. Unfortunatly this is also the reason I hate it. It is quite difficult to find complete recordings of these operas (Besides the dreadull Pearl Label ones). From just a few scraps of the Emerald Isle I am in love with it, but seemingly doomed to either subpar recordings of nothing at all...woe to me!

4 out of 5 stars An excellent but flawed disc.......2003-01-08

This is in many ways an excellent and very welcome addition to the growing range of recordings of Sullivan's "non-G" music. The items selected are enjoyable and are well-sung and well-performed. However, the disc is not generously filled. While this may well have been unavoidable, what is not is the decision to occupy a significant chunk of the limited time available with selections from "The Martyr of Antioch". While I personally am an admirer of this sacred music drama, it is just that, and from 1880 too. The fact that it was semi-staged for a few performances in the 1890s no more makes it an 1890s opera than (eg) a modern concert performance of "Ivanhoe" would turn the latter into a 21st century cantata! The inclusion of the "Martyr" items is all the more annoying in view of the lack of coverage of some bona fide 1890s operas, notably "The Rose of Persia". So one star off for poor judgement in this respect - but still a very worthwhile disc for Sullivanians!

5 out of 5 stars Any Arthur Sullivan fan MUST buy this CD.......2000-02-22

Many people claim that outside his partnership with librettist Sir William Gilbert, Sir Arthur Sullivan was unable to write music that could be remembered. This recording has precisely the goal of making us remember what a truly marvellous composer Sullivan really was. All the recordings on this CD are excerpts from Sullivan "operas" written without Gilbert's involvement. Even though most of these pieces (apart from "Ho! Jolly Jenkin!") are now completely forgotten, hidden behind the success of the Savoy Operas, such as Sullivan's "Mikado" or "HMS Pinafore", written in collaboration with Gilbert, they deserve more recognition.

All pieces are sung by recognized Gilbert and Sullivan singers, and their professionalism is at its usual level.

The two flaws that I can find to this album are: 1) It is too short (approximatively 50 minutes) but I suspect it was the result of lack of funds. 2) The booklet makes no mention whatsoever of Gilbert, even though his influence on Sullivan's musical career was essential. Gilbert had collaborated on the adaptation of "The Martyr of Antioch", but is not even mentioned. Furthermore, Sullivan might have never considered operetta (or light opera) as an adequate musical genre (for Sullivan, in his early years, wanted to achieve fame as a "serious" composer) had it not been for the success of "Trial by Jury" and other successful operettas all written during his partnership with Gilbert.

But these are just mere details. The music is impeccable, so I encourage everyone, especially all the Savoyards out there who only know Sullivan's music through his collaboration with Gilbert, to buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording, long overdue.......1999-03-11

This CD spotlights Sullivan's non-Gilbert works, and, as such, is full of surprises. Still, the producers seemed to have decided to put in as much material that is "Sullivanesque" as possible. "Ho jolly jenkin" from Ivanhoe is probably the most familiar, and perhaps should have been replaced by something else from the same work. The biggest failing is the neglect of The Rose of Persia in favor of The Emerald Isle. The selections from The Emerald Isle that appear on this recording are not even Sullivan's arrangements, since he died before he finished it. Besides, The Rose of Persia is much better, both as drama and as music. The biggest surprises are "The gay hussar" from The Chieftain and the two selections from The Martyr of Antioch. The madrigal from Haddon Hall is performed a little too slow. The pace of "The sun's in the sky" may be too brisk for those familiar with earlier recordings, but I like it. "Ride on" (The Beauty Stone) is perhaps the most uncharacteristic selection. The soloists are okay, though the tenor creaks once or twice. All in all, a recording not to be missed by any G&S fan. Maybe the next time a recording like this is undertaken, we'll get an entire work -- how long must we wait to hear The Martyr of Antioch in its entirety in a modern recording?! (And yes, I know The Rose of Persia is due out this year . . . .)

        5 out of 5 stars A ground-breaking release.......1999-02-21

This is the recording which finally proves that Sullivan's lesser-known operas should be rated more highly than they are. There are no poor excerpts on this recording, but those that particularly stand out are When the Budding Bloom of May (Haddon Hall), both items from The Beauty Stone and the Finale from The Emerald Isle. Those people who think that Sullivan was not much of a composer away from Gilbert should be pleasantly surprised. Hopefully, this recording will prove successful enough to encourage some enterprising recording company to release complete professional recordings of Sullivan's unjustly neglected works.

          Album Description

Smooth, romantic, jazz-based vocals of ballads and swing tunes from 'Great American Songbook' composers such as Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Rodgers & Hart, Lionel Hampton, Cy Coleman, et al.

This CD offers voluptuous-but-tasteful arrangements and performances by the best musicians to be found on the West Coast Jazz/Easy Listening scene. At the same time, it has an international flavor and appeal with lyrics occasionally moving from English into Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Perfect music for late-night relaxing, creating a romantic atmosphere, long-distance driving/flying, or just enjoying a glass of wine alone, with a friend, a lover or a mate.

Highly recommended for lovers of this genre of music as sung by a velevty, rich baritone with the sound and vocal tradition of singers like Billy Eckstine, Johhny Hartman, and Sinatra.
