Customer Reviews:
A "Regular People" Review.......2007-03-20
So I was on a Renaissance kick for a while and picked this up, first of all, great value. I enjoy listening to a few of these every now and then but can't take too much at once, check out the previews and if you interested, go for it!
Not stilted but powerfully alive.......2005-02-24
My idea of stilted is to sing these madrigals in the phony, glee-club RP style endured for so many years, that made precious, quaint curiosities of them. The Elizabethan pronunciation on this CD is an eye and ear-opener. We may appreciate how much of that speech actually endures in regional accents in both the US and UK. More importantly, this CD brings us the sounds of the long-forgotten English human beings of the Renaissance, people who drank, fought and screwed, who brought us Shakespeare and the King James Bible. I love this recording.
Better at Italian than English.......2003-07-25
A stilted style and even more stilted attempts at Renaissance-English pronunciation make the English Madrigal disk a terrible disappointment. All emotional content -- the mellow, lumimous melancholy with flashes of fire that characterizes English music at its best -- has been drained in this attempt to kill, skin, and stuff these madrigals in order to present them as museum pieces. The pronunciation problem is particularly galling -- if these songs are going to be made incomprehensible to modern English speakers, where, then, is their cultural home?
The Italian pieces are presentable, enjoyable, and sung with delicacy and a fine sense of the artifice of the Italian madrigal. Although this recording can be moving, these pieces are performed more with reverence than with love. These are well worth hearing, but the French ensembles sing these with a bit more feeling. Try, say, Ensemble Clément Janequin.

Album Description
The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12
The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare
Customer Reviews:
Get It While You Can.......2006-10-13
This may not be easy to get in the USA for very long.....don't miss it.
Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01
This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.
The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.
The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.
Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.
Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.
Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.
Todd Kosovich

Customer Reviews:
FASCINATING: DISCOVER A RARELY PLAYED GEM.......2006-11-03
I completely disagree with the previous reviewer. I found this CD extremely enjoyable. These are really abridged versions of both operas: Auber's Fra Diavolo (in italian, originaly in French) and Donizetti's La Figlia del Reggimento (in Italina, though orignal also in French).
First of all, even though "La Figlia" was written originaly in French (Le Fille du Regiment), until 2 or 3 decades ago it was mostly known and played in the Italian version. The French version has been appearing more often since the 60s and 70s, a great example of the French opera comique, a form mastered by Donizetti.
Auber's Fra Diavolo was an amazing discovery for me. Auber was one of the most popular composers in 19th Century Paris. His operas are very lively and beautifully melodic He was a master of the opera comique format, and even of french grand opera (his 'La Muette de Portici' is considered the first well-defined example of the grand opera form). Fra Diavolo can be compared with Rossini's comic operas, only that in a french style. The arias and ensembles are richly melodic and quite interesting. The opera made me a fan of Auber, and made me find out more about his work. I was only familiar with "la Muete" (a serious opera). But he might have been better suited for the "opera comique" format. 'Manon Lescaut', 'Le Domino Noir', 'Le Cheval de Bronze' are just a few examples of his comic operas. They are gems that in recent decades have been rediscovered and good recordings of them do exist (available here on Amazon).
I would really recommend any fan of Rossini, Donizetti and other composers of opera buffa to buy this CD. Do get it, give it a chance. It will introduce you to a new and just as fascinating comic opera form. It is fascinating to notice the influence of Rossini and italian opera buffa in general, but then you can also tell that they are also very french at the same time. Just like me i am sure you will end up being a fan of french oprea comique, and maybe even also exploring other of the opera comic composers, such as Adams, Offenbach, Messager, Boieldieu, Gretty and many more.
Four High C's?.......2006-03-07
If you want a very truncated version of Donizetti's "Daughter of the Regiment" sung in Italian (original is in French), with the famous tenor aria, which should contain 9 high C's, cut in half (thus only 4 high C's are sung) then by all means get this two CD set.....but why would you? I wouldn't even call this a highlights CD, as so many of the selections are truncated. Despite some nice singing and orchestral playing, this recording is to be avoided. Not the genuine article. Oh yeah, there also is Auber's "Fra Diavolo" on disc one if you care....I didn't.

Lotte Lehmann in her Prime.......2006-07-08
Lotte Lehmann is one of the great German sopranos of the Twentieth Century. For many years, from her creation of the role of the Composer in the revised version of Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" in 1916 up to her departure in 1937 prior to the Nazi occupation of Austria, she was a star at the Vienna State Opera and a darling of the Viennese audience. She was also enthusiatically received at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
During the years of her prime Lehmann created a couple of Strauss's operatic heroines, including the Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" and Christine in "Intermezzo." She also sang a great variety of roles ranging from Wagner's romantic heroines to the Italian verisimo parts by Giordano and Puccini. Puccini was said to have been one of her bigget admirers, especially for her renditions of Mimi in La boheme and Suor Angelica. However, her most famous roles were the Marshallin in Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" and Sieglinde in Wagner's "Die Walkure." This Preiser issue documents accoustic recordings of nearly all her more renowned roles, made between 1914 and 1925.
Although Lehmann later made more amenable electrical recordings of many of the arias here, as well as excerpts from "Der Rosenkavalier" and Acts One and Two of "Die Walkure," these accoustic recordings more often than not show her in fresher voice with a joyous freedom on top. Her hallmarks as a singing-actress, such as her always vivid enunciation of the text and her great variety of tonal colors and moods, are also evident even in the earliest of these recordings.
This set is one of the gems in Preiser's famous historic singers series and anyone interested in operatic singing should consider investing in this set. The CD transfer unavoidably contains some surface noise but the vibrancy and color of Lehmann's voice are faithfully recaptured.

Heavenly choir.......2003-07-05
Absolutely gorgeous a capella quartet. Stunning and soothing music. Highly recommended.
Landini; the dawn of the Renaissance.......2003-04-27
True to thier artistry the A4 conveys Landini as a courtly master; subtle and flowing. Thier singing radiates with the freshness of May.
Landini can be likened to Duccio as Palistrina to Giotto. Duccio is not a painter of angles or the other-worldy but humans on earth. Yet they are not humanized in the Renaissance sense for they lack rotunda and gravity. Rather, they are delicate and "float" and retain something of the soaring intensity and expressive flavor of Medieval art. Yet they are very human and with Duccio as with Landini one can perceive the dawn of the Renaissance.
Like a sunset to sunrise the CD ends with the piece it began (Echo la primavera) singing it with more expansion and reflection. Not bad since the piece is so short. Perhaps the A4 wants to convey an end of a journey or "My end is my begining."

There isn't a difinitive interpretation of medieval music.......2002-11-09
While I'm more used to this music with instruments, at least
portative organ this being Landini, Anonymous 4's is what used to be called a valid perfomance. The snatches of documentation for performance practice we have of this period certainly don't rule out an all vocal approach. I've been a musician long enough to know that given the material and the ability of the musicians they will try everything and I'm sure all vocal renditions were done if an instrument wasn't available. Landini was a part of a rather refined group and his music is very subtle. You can't perform his music as if it was a contra dance without distorting it.
While I'm disappointed, and frankly amazed, that anyone could use this a background music for reviewing a paper it isn't the fault of either the listener who can do what he likes or of the preformers who do a good job.
The performance is very good their intonation is some of the best.

For all Vivaldi's current popularity, his nearly 50 operas continue to languish in undeserved obscurity. This live performance of his 1727 hit, Farnace, should help rectify posterity's oversight, for the music is compelling and the spirited singing and conducting are irresistible. The plot is a typical 18th-century opera narrative concerning people in ancient times whose confusing doings resist concise summary, but combine family discord, high politics, hate, love, and forgiveness. Jordi Savall leads his crack period instrument ensemble in a spirited rendition that stresses dramatic values. His sterling cast has no discernible weak links and several especially strong ones, such as baritone Furio Zanasi in the title role, contralto Sara Mingardo as his wife, and the daughter of the villainess of the opera, Farnace's arch-rival, Queen Berenice, soprano Adriana Fernandez. In fact, everybody sings with dramatic abandon and uses stunning coloratura effects. Savall also interpolates about 20 minutes of music from another Farnace opera written a dozen years later by Francesco Corselli, emulating the period practice of inserting materials by other contemporary composers. The fluent singing and dynamic drive of the orchestra make this among the best recordings of Baroque Italian opera. The format is a book-style packaging, with lavish illustrations, full text, and translations. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
One of the best opera recordings ever.......2004-08-15
I agree wholeheartedly with the reviewers below. I am relatively new to vocal music and I tend to respond on a wholly emotional level.
Some Baroque operas with lenghty recitives tend to bore me. But Savall and his cast have brought to life even those passages of the opera. The cast was recorded live in a Madrid opera house. Not all live recordings of operas are successful. But Savall and company have left me all atingle an hour after I finished listening.
I realize that two other reviewers have given much more lucid, analytical reviews, but I was just wowed by this recording so much.
I recommend this not just to baroque opera or Vivaldi lovers but as a CD that belongs in every classical music lover's collection.
Totally brilliant Vivaldi.......2004-06-23
I agree wholeheartedly with reviewer Glidden's very expert review with the sole exception that I am madly in love with Sara Mingardo and although I am basically a soprano-lover, Sara is my absolute favorite Vivaldi singer. You should also purchase La Verità in Cimento, L'Olimpiade and Vespri per l'Assunzione di Maria Vergine. You will be totally convinced of her tremendous ability. The CDs come with an absolutely superb libretto. There is one minor flaw in this whole thing but by no means should you permit it to deter you from purchasing this work. The CDs are actually stored in slip-in jackets which are pages in the libretto. It cannot possibly be beneficial for the CDs to be put in and pulled out of these very tight jackets. Very definitely buy this work and then do yourself a big favor by buying a couple of empty jewel cases and storing the CDs in them as CDs should be stored. It will be well worth the small price (I buy them 3 for about $5).
Requiem for a dead son.......2003-06-27
Vivaldi's vocal music will, I believe, eventually be adulated on a level approaching Bach's. For those who have labored through the rocky trails of bizarre, overpriced, and obscure recordings of his sacred music, recently revitalized by Robert King and Rinaldo Alessandrini, to name two, his operatic repertoire is a godsend, all the more so since these latter CD's have been favored by truly excellent singers. And no wonder. Who, other than Bach (and, to lesser extent, Handel), forges the indissassociable link between instrumental and vocal writing, giving us wind instruments that sigh and weep and cadenzas that soar like violins (or, in the case of our altos, like violas)? Jordi Savall's Farnace is bold. The more-or-less incomprehensible plot, with its gratuitious secondary love story, is simply the occasion for the music. This is the forgiveness we have to extend to these Venetian operas in order to enter them. When they are graced with such singers as these, the music opens our ear, heart, and mind and lets the trumpet call in. I bought this recording, (full-price!), for its three contralti, Sara Mingardo, Gloria Banditelli, and, my current favorite, Sonia Prina. Ms Mingardo and Ms. Banditelli are long-time heralds of the true contralto in baroque music, but only Ms. Prina, at the ripe old age of 29, makes my heart both thrill and melt. Perhaps less so in this recording than her Aristea in Alessandrini's Olympiade with her incomparably languid force, than here with her Marilyn Horne-worthy coloratura, but as part of this ensemble her major talent announces a great work. I will confess another miscasting in the role of the "Amazone d'Oriente" Berenice in Ms. Fernandez (too sweet for a murderous, tyranical queen! Her photo belies the role 100%) but the blame lies elsewhere than in her voice. The surprises came with Cinzi Forte, aptly named indeed, and her wind-swept mastery, and even more so, Furio Zanasi, whom I have not heard since Rene Jacob's legendary Guilio Cesare (Achilla). His full-throated approach to singing can leave one overwhelmed, but that is desireable here in a man bent with grief for his dead son. His 9:09 minute long aria "Gelido in ogni vena" is beyond the pale, metaphor intended.
There is much to discover in these three disks and Savall's additions from Corselli's version are ultimately enriching. Final note: the set photos are dramatic, baroque, and utterly splendid, making you regret having missed the performance and hoping fervently for its revival.

Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2007-06-27
Caruso's performances are purely breathtaking. This set does not attempt to over-process the sound as some do. All the 78 RPM noise gets through and so does all the music. This is the way these recordings should be heard. Was Caruso's voice really that fantastic or is it just that the recording process of the day was perfectly suitable to his voice? It doesn't matter - what you will hear on each and every track is Caruso giving everything he's got. There will never be another like him, and there's no better way to get his material on CD than this series. The only thing you could do beter is get the original 78's.
Must Have 3 of 4.......2005-04-26
...what I said about volumes 1 and 2...
Excellent documentation, excellent remastering. Oh yeah, and it's Caruso. Any questions?
