Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Missing disc 4!.......2007-06-27

I am not thrilled. I received this box set today. It was wrapped in plastic, but it was missing CD number 4! It has a plethora of M.J.'s music, and originally I thought it was a bargain...until I found the missing CD. I plan to return it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-02-03

I know that you can't put every single thing this great artist did. It's almost complete. Great box set.

5 out of 5 stars Mike's the Man .......2006-12-28

This is the one you want to get if you want to listen to a good singer sing songs you can listen to over and over it a truly great collection of michael jackson from beginning to end this gives you all the really good songs that michael has been involved with and the dvd is also good too. There are so many good songs on here from "billyjean" to "i want you back" all of them.

5 out of 5 stars Great Looking Set!.......2006-08-30

First, before I get into this set, let me say that the previous reviewer has a right to his opinion. That being said, THIS IS A REVIEW OF A PRODUCT, NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK FORUM!

Now, to the product itself! While I haven't purchased it yet, it looks like a great collection! There have been several so-called greatest hits collections for Michael Jackson over the years but this is probably THE BEST I've ever seen for this artist! It has stuff from even his days with The Jacksons!

Regardless of what you think of the man personally, this is a review of the art and music, not the man himself! I have my views on MJ but this isn't the place for it!

As a fan of music, I would highly recommend this piece even at its high price because it looks like it would be worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson's "The Ultimate Collection".......2006-07-06

This is a dazzling collection of Michael's work from the early years to recent times. It has many famous songs as well as a few songs less widely known but nevertheless wonderful. The variety of the songs keeps you wanting to hear each track after the other. These songs are definitely catchy and usually have a tendency to get stuck in your head. There are songs of all types from the sweet "Rock With You" to the ever classic "Thriller".

Each song seems to have it's own special quality and rhythm and uniquness and rarity. How can you compare "Bad" to "Man in the Mirror"? It's like apples and oranges. This collection is a 5 disc set. It includes some songs from "The Wiz" along with all the other songs on the various cd's. Disc 5 is a DVD of a "Dangerous" tour with the following songs: "Jam," "Billie Jean," "Man in the Mirror," "Thriler," '"Wanna be Starting Something," "Just Can't Stop Loving You," "She's Outta my Life," "Human Nature," "Smooth Criminal" and probably a couple I've forgotten.

If you're a Michael Jackson fan or just love a good beat, then this is the collection for you. -- Sophie Milkowski, age 11

5 out of 5 stars U have to own one if you were a teenager in 1984.......2001-12-10

This was during Xmas 1984. One lovely girl from Texas brought to Poland (this is where I live) the 10 cassetes pack with "The Best of Billboard - 1984". I still hear this music. Now I can buy a piece of it.

To anyone who was ...teen in 1984: you have to own this one. Don't tell me there is no music you remember from these years. It must be one at least. Remember the first girlfriend. The first kiss maybe? Yes! That's it!.

5 out of 5 stars I want my MTV!.......2000-06-17

This set takes me back to the early days of MTV. Pac-Man fever, Atari and great times in my life. As a child of the 80s it was a special time and special music. This box set helps take you back from time to time!

Check out the details...if you like the songs, then there you go!

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST GET.......2007-01-12

This collection is terrific. During the 85-89 era, I was a teenager, and this brings back all the great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe This Will Help?.......2004-08-29

First off, I won't argue what's here because these songs are good enough to be in this collection. Now that I got that out of the way, here is the real problem: licencing. Madonna and company are not here for that reason alone. However, by looking at the song list, you may buy the songs you want but don't have. You can also buy each CD separately. There are other options then this to summerize.

3 out of 5 stars Billboard top hits 1985-1989 box set.......2004-06-19

I was just going to buy this music box set when I suddenly remembered two great songs of 1985, which are: Born in the USA and Careless Whisper. Am I wrong? or weren't they hits? Where are they? I think they could have left out two other songs and included the ones I mentioned, because they were #1 hits. It just got me thinking that this box set is really not so great.

5 out of 5 stars This is GREAT For ANYONE who likes 70's Music!.......1998-11-18

The 70's had a broad array of music... from Soft Hits that we all laugh about now, to Disco hits we all love to dance to. In Between we had some stiffs from Elton John, and songs some artists would probably rather forget about (England Dan and John Ford Coley). This box set is a must have for anyone who likes the whole 70's era!

Another in the saturated "hits" of an era album. One can find a similar offering at the bottom of the discount bins at your CD outlet. Wait a while and this will be found there too.

You'd be right to be excited about Rhino Records' voluminous compilation, Whatever: The '90s Pop and Culture Box. After all, they did such a great job with their 1980s comps, not to mention all their various approaches to prior decades, from the original Nice Day series to the expanded and brilliant Nuggets collections. Whatever is a seven-disc set that comes with a bag of stale coffee inside it. This US-centric collection has a lot of great tracks on it, from throwaway songs ("Sunscreen," "Sex And Candy") to absolute classics ("Baby Got Back," "Under the Bridge"). But ultimately, it's a complete and utter mess. A lot happened in the '90s of course; hip-hop went pop, rock got funky and weird, grunge broke open and imploded, Moby sampled the Lomax archives for a surprise hit, even the weirdest indie bands had cash thrown at them by major labels, the daisy age morphed into the chronic age, and dance music was quite nearly the next big thing. Rather than provide a narrative of underground and mainstream movements, this set smacks of the sort of lowest common denominator, novelty-centric approach that makes lowbrow VH1 programs only fleetingly satisfying. Sheesh. Hip-hop, metal, and dance music are barely covered here. And the lack of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" alone is enough to make the listener want to return the set with the words "try again" scrawled into the cover. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Remember the 1990s? Dot-com booms and stock market pinnacles? The fall of the Wall, the rise of Desert Storm, Presidential impeachment, and Beavis & Butt-head? The decade of grunge power, alt-rock diversity, and hip-hop evolution? The decade of grunge power, alt-rock diversity, and hip-hop evolution? It's an era that's oh-so-close, yet already so far away. If you're pining for those '90s, and we know you are-our monlithic new 7-disc box takes you back to the good old days in style.

5 out of 5 stars Great because it HAS songs out of the ordinary! We all KNOW Pearl Jam and Nirvana!.......2007-06-29

This is great because we all have a lot of the songs that were really popular by Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc... These are titles that you don't get on EVERY collection or hear all day on 90's stations, but still huge hits for either long or short periods of time. Great job!

4 out of 5 stars Would've been better broken up..........2007-04-24

Let me start by saying that I LOVE 90's Alternative rock. I was a college radio DJ, went to clubs and had myself a whale of a good time so I was looking forward to reliving it all with "Whatever". I don't think it's "too soon" to do a 90's box set either. In only a few years we'll be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind and most grunge kids'll be pushing 40. The DIY ethic and counterculture chest-thumping of 90's music seems like a faded fond memory in this homogenized processed teen pop world of ours today.
The trouble with Rhino's 90's set is that it tries to take several disparate genres of music and make it all fit our definition of the 90's. They missed the boat here because unlike the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's....radio became more fragmented in the 90's. You would'nt find too many Hip Hop fans rocking out to White Zombie and Pantera fans probably would'nt be grooving to Marc Cohn. Each fanbase usually had it's own radio station and culture. Whereas Rhino's "Ohmigod!" 80's box could get away with putting Tommy Tutone and The Psychedelic Furs on the same playlist because at one point BOTH would've been on pop radio, the 90's simply did not offer that kind of unity. EVERYONE who was a Gen-Xer (like me) would have their own idea of what 90's music represented to them. Rhino got it right with the 80's by acknowledging and then issuing a seperate box set to cover 80's college rock/alternative called "Left Of The Dial". It probably would've been smarter to do the same thing here with seperate 90's Alternative and 90's Hip Hop boxes (and I betcha buyers would be raving about them!).
That said, there IS a great deal of nifty music on here and if you have an open mind or find yourself getting nostalgic about a song you did'nt even like at the time (a strange phemomenon that happens to all of us eventually) you'll find yourself in 90's nirvana (no pun intended...they ain't on here).
I can only imagine the difficulties Rhino will have with a 00's box set. How do you judge what goes on it? the most downloaded songs from the decade? will there even be CD's in ten years? will Amazon be selling mp3's?

3 out of 5 stars It's ok.......2007-01-13

It's ok if you like the latest 90's pop, I wasn't totally impressed with it, but I did like some of the songs.

2 out of 5 stars E for effort?.......2006-10-04

The 90s ended just a mere 6 yrs ago... and for sure there's still dust settling... leave it alone and try again anytime after 2010

3 out of 5 stars Something in the Way..........2006-07-13

Great compillation, capturing the full sound of the 90s, including all the retrospectively embarrassing stuff we all used to swear by! Just one problem... there's nothing here by the most notorious band of the 1990s: Nirvana. I don't understand how Tad, Mudhoney, L7 and Bikini Kill are all collected here, without the presence of the band that got these bands commercial recognition to begin with!

Not even "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" Come On!

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

This collection of four compact discs...are worth their weight in GOLD! Barry creates visual moods for each film he scores...romantic, sentimental, action, adventure, suspense and mystery...the list could go on. Must ask the following to take a bow ~ James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), always in their pitching, Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Nic Raine (conductor, arranger, orchestrator & associate producer), a tremen!dous asset to every project he undertakes...and the man who made it all possible...a legendary icon always leading the way in film scoring ~ JOHN BARRY!

Despite its mirror-ball packaging, The Disco Box presents the music as it was heard on AM radio, not in clubs. The 80 tunes are well-chosen, but almost all are heard in their single-edit version rather than in the often cathartic extended tracks that were one of the form's trademarks. Also, some of disco's best-loved divas (Loleatta Holloway, Taana Gardner) are left out of this history. Still, for those whose record collections don't represent one of pop's most glorious, insane (try 5000 Volts' "I'm On Fire"), inspiring moments, these four CDs are a worthy primer. --Rickey Wright

If you like disco then you want to pick up this box set. It's fun to pop a cd in and have the girls over and do the "bump" and other dances from that era, great box

5 out of 5 stars Station H.A.P.P.Y.!!!.......2006-03-20

Some people have written that this four CD box is not thorough enough in terms of which songs are presented here-and they have a point. Nevertheless, this boxed set is not to be overlooked--I consider this four CD set with its huge 60 page book to be an absolute essential for lovers of disco music everywhere. The sound quality is excellent, even on a small portable CD player; and the packaging is really cool with its shimmering white/grey coloration!

The CDs themselves are labeled rather simply with stars and the number of the CD; the song sets are written on the reverse of the box and inside the book as well with credits and the rankings each song achieved on the charts. You get great color photos in the 60 page book, too: The Jackson 5, Gloria Gaynor, Silver Convention, KC & The Sunshine Band, and many, many more! The liner notes are by Vince Aletti; and there is an essay by Brian Chin, too.

The booklet also includes commentary by DJs who played the trendy New York City clubs and hot spots elsewhere during the great years of disco. A really great treat full of insight and an awesome walk down memory lane! A list of "50 essential disco album" is included, too! A disco EXPLOSION!

Now, I have to say this, as I wrote above: This is not a completely thorough compilation of the disco era. There are few, if any, rarities. Sigh. You will not find the extended 12 inch forms of the songs, either--there's just not enough room for that here--even on a four CD set. Instead you get a lot of what were most likely the "AM radio" shorter versions of these songs. And, as Anthony Nasti (another Amazon reviewer) wrote, The Bee Gees and Diana Ross are not featured here. A big wagging finger of shame! That will cost this set one star.

So, you call this a tawdry period? No way! Disco produced a lot of great hits, good times in the disco clubs--and high profits for the artists, too. I give it four stars mostly because certain artists are not represented here. Therefore this is a superlative introduction to disco, or maybe part of a more comprehensive collection of disco hits for the more serious disco fans and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Keep On Dancin'.......2005-12-04

Although this 4-disc, 80-song set was released a few years ago, there's good reason that The Disco Box is out front and center on the display shelf for all Christmas shoppers to admire. One look at the silver packaging, reminiscent of the original disco balls that used to hang in our favorite dance clubs, and you'll be pulled in like steel to a magnet. I was immediately impressed with the meticulous array of songs that are laid out in chronological order. The set begins with the birth of disco in 1974 with the Love Unlimited Orchestra's infectious and stunning instrumental "Love's Theme" and takes us all the way through to Kool & the Gangs' #1 smash "Fresh." Of the 78 other tracks, the ride through the 70's and early 80's gets even better with hits that include the original queen of disco Gloria Gaynor and her club anthem "Honeybee," to her successor Donna Summer and the dawn of electronic dance, the brilliant "I Feel Love." If you're looking for rarities, this isn't the set, but if it's radio and club hits such as Carol Douglas' "Doctor's Orders," Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free," Karen Young's "Hot Shot," Sister Sledge's "He's The Greatest Dancer," McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now," Chic's "Good Times" and Patrice Rushen's "Forget Me Nots," you've come to the right place. And of course, there are the disco staples from Thelma Houston, The Weather Girls, Blondie, Sylvester, Village People, Cheryl Lynn and several more. Didn't see your favorite? Chances are it's on this set. But don't take my word for it, dance on down to the record store and feast your eyes and ears on this exquisite time capsule and the era that we all hold near and dear to our hearts...and feet! Trust me, it's "The Best Disco In Town." Yes, that song is also included. When's the last time you heard dance music this good? Artists are still delivering dance music, just check out Madonna's latest ode to disco, but can you honestly say it's as good as this golden era of music? Pass me a fan and a tambourine - this collection is worth its price in platform shoes.

4 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars; All Great Songs But Many Essentials Missing.......2004-07-17

Whether you love it or hate it, you can't deny disco's appeal on the music community. For years, disco collections have been released numerous timea and all of them were basically trash. In 1999, Rhino Records tried to rectify that problem with the 4 - disc "Disco Box". White it comes close, it still isn't the definitve collection we're hoping for.

For starters, discs 1 and 2 contain little if any rarities. This one includes just the standard fare: "Dancing Machine" by the Jackson 5, "Shake Your Booty" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band (one of three songs by them on this disc alone), "Fly Robin Fly" by the Silver Convention", "Boogie Fever" by the Sylvers, and "Disco Inferno" by the Trammps, to name a few. Even if you are new to disco, it's highly unlikely that you haven't heard these songs on the radio or at a party. The only song here I consider a rarity is, unfortunately, the dreadful "I'm On Fire" by 5000 Volts.

Discs 3 and 4 get a little more adventurous by including a few disco rarities like "I Shoulda Loved Ya" by Narada Michael Walden (who later rose to fame by producing Whiteney Houston's biggest hits), "I'm Caught Up" (In A One Night Love Affair)" by Inner Life and two Sister Sledge masterworks, "Lost In Music" and "I Got To Love Somebody". But once again, standard fare like "We Ae Family", 'I Will Survive" (probably the perennial disco anthem), "Celebration" and "Heart Of Glass" outweigh any rarities.

Here are my major complaints. Several artists who were known for recording contemporary rock and pop music scored with one - time forays into disco. I'm talking about artists like Barry Manilow ("Copacabana"), The Rolling Stones ("Miss You")and Rod Stewart ("Da Ya Think I'm Sexy"). All these songs remain party staples today. More tellingly, three of discos biggest innovators, The Bee Gees, Barry White and Diana Ross (though the latter hardly if ever gets credit for it), are not featured at all. For The Bee Gees (called the Kings of Disco) created such rumpshakers as "Jive Talkin'" and "Stayin' Alive", to name two of the many.. White crafted songs like "You're The First, The Last, My Everything", "I'll Do For You Anything You Want Me To" and "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness". And what about Ms. Ross. Does anybody remeber "Love Hangover" (I would have also liked to have seen the original Fifth Dimension version included here), "The Boss", "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out"? Of course you do. Plus, Madonna gave us "Holiday" and "Like A Virgin", which could've easily been hits in 1979 as they were in 1983 and 1985, well after disco's so - called "death".

So, not essential. But if you want a good set of party songs that will get you on our feet, better this than the cheap, single - disc sets that I mentioned earlier.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But 80 Songs Are From Complete.......2004-05-25

Rhino Records can usually be counted on to release high - quality essential collections for the obsessive music fan. To capitalize on the cravings of the many disco fans still around today, they released this slapdash collection which features 4 discs of some great music. But still, with 80 songs, you can't help but feel the incompleteness.

Disc1 and 2 will only appeal to the casual disco fan, as they stand out as the ones with the most familliar songs. Tracks like "Love's Theme" by The Love Unlimited Orchestra, "Dancing Machine" by The Jackson 5, "Get Down Tonight" and "That's The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps and "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King remain radio staples today. Alas, there is some rarely heard stuff here, like 5000 Volts' "I'm On Fire" and the forgotten Candi Staton standard "Young Hearts Run Free" remain some of the best rumpshakers ever.

Discs 3 and 4 should appeal more to the hardcore disco fans, as there's a lot of rare tracks here, like "Instant Replay" by Dan Hartman, "Love And Desire (Part 1)" by Arpeggio, "I Shoulda Loved Ya" by Narada Michael Walden, "I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)", "A Lover's Holiday" by Change", and "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Indeep. Still the classics like "I Will Survive", "We Are Family", "Le Freak" and "YMCA" weigh out the rarer stuff.

It's okay, but far from complete. There are lot of rarely heard disco stuff not here that would have made it more interesting and appealing to the buyers. What songs? Songs like "My Sweet Summer Suite" by The Love Unlimited Orchestra, "I Don't Wanna Lose You" by Hall And Oates", I Caught You Act" by The Hues Corporation", "Catfish and "H.E.L.P", both by The Four Tops". And if that's not enough. Even some essential classics are missing. I would've loved to see "Love Hangover, "Best Of My Love", "Shadow Dancing", "September", "Boogie Wonderland", "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" and any Bee Gees song here. Aso, a few dance classics from the 1980s' are missing, like "Holiday" by Madonna, "Take Your Time" by The S.O.S. Band, and "Out Of Touch" by Hall and Oates.

If you are an obsessive disco fan, than I highly suggest this set. Otherwise, please consider other collections before buying this.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the Motown I Know and Love.......2006-07-11

I have loved the Motown sound ever since I was a little kid. So many of those songs have added pleasure to my life. A few years ago I bought the first box set and voraciously consumed it. Every song there was a classic. I only wished it included a lot more music.

I recently saw that there was a second installment to Hitsville USA. I bought it immediately, and I was encouraged by the generally good reviews here on Amazon. But, wow, I regretfully must report to you that this set does not have the Motown Sound that I know and love. Perhaps a quarter of these songs are very good, but the other three-quarters I do not like at all. They are campy, disco-like atrocities which in my mind are the antithesis of the earthy, passionate, natural sound of real Motown. I do like soul music outside of Motown, but these songs do not come close to even good, authentic soul music. Most of these are bad disco songs which have the second-generation Motown label affixed for prestige. Please don't get this expecting the classic Motown sound, because you won't find it here. Even the small percentage of good songs here don't sound like Motown; I'm not sure exactly how you would categorize them.

The remaining 75% of the music on these discs is of that category of "Music that I Affirmatively Try to Avoid." If Motown was one of the pinnacles of modern music, many of these songs are the valleys. Real Motown was silk; this is a plastic tarp. Again, I emphasize the synthetic, synthesizer-intensive foundation, with the pre-pubescent, screechy, annoying vocals. Motown is all about a thumping, plodding deep bass, with a great guitar groove, and supernaturally beatiful lyrics and voices. Even most of Smokey's stuff here doesn't do much for me, and I love Smokey. The amazing documentary film "In the Shadow of Motown" might have discussed this period in Motown's history, if it did, I'm sure it is characterized as the (steep, almost vertical) decline. The folks who were the subject matter of that film were REAL MUSICIANS, the best musicians the world has ever known; they weren't a bunch of beeping, buzzing computers and polyester-wearing prancing disco-dancers.

I will never listen to these discs straight-through again. I'll just skip over to the few good tracks. The preponderance of these songs were downright painful, they represent the worst of the 70's and 80's. I wish they had merely augmented the collection of real Motown, rather than used the songs which rode on the coat-tails of the real (and legendary) Motown.

In the past years I have ordered from individuals via Amazon as opposed to Amazon.com directly. This time, this particular item was offered through Amazon at basically the same cost and I received the item faster than I ever had before. From now on if Amazon offers any item I wish to purchase, I'll order it through Amazon directly.

Not quite as strong as the first Motown boxed set but then again I'm partial to the earlier songs during the illustrious Motown of the '60s. 4.5 stars.

ALL I CAN SAY IS IF YOU LIKE THE MOTOWN SOUND THEN YOU WOULD LIKE THIS CD. I LIKE IT AND ENJOY IT AND I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND ANYONE WHO LIKES THE MOTOWN SOUND OF YESTERYEAR TO BUY THIS ALBUM BECAUSE YOU WOULD DEFINITELY ENJOY IT.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection.......2004-05-12

The tunes on these disks are varied in style and sound quite different from one another. The older selection from 59-71 has a real sound from yesteryear.
They are both great selections of singles from their day.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2007-02-17

This collection really is the one you need! If you were there and already have some of these tracks, you certainly won't have them all and if you are lucky/unlucky enough to be young and are discovering disco after the event, this is a great place to start. The track selection here covers the whole spectrum of dance at the time, from P Funk to peak tempo gay disco and includes most of Casablanca's 'big hitters' i.e. Donna Summer, Village People, Cher. It also includes however lots of lesser known artists like Patti Brooks, Teri Desario and Dennis Parker. Sound transfers are excellent and the information booklet is very nicely put together and informative. Let's hope that they do a volume two as there are lots more great tracks in the Casablanca vaults, but for now I can not recommend this box set highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Caution: this mass collection will give you disco nightmares. . ........2007-02-13

This compilation of disco hit songs by the Casablanca label is jam packed with the hits that made disco the star of the late 70's and early 80's. LOVE TO LOVE YOU, BABY begins the entire journey, and goes thru FUNKYTOWN (Lipps,Inc.), TAKE ME HOME (Cher), MACARTHUR PARK SUITE (Donna Summer), SAN FRANCISCO/HOLLYWOOD (Village People), PLEASURE ISLAND (Paul Jabara), LIKE AN EAGLE (Dennis Parker), FLASHLIGHT (Parliament), HOT STUFF/BAD GIRLS (Donna Summer), CHASE (Giorgio Moroder), WALK THE NIGHT (Skatt Bros.), YOU OUGHT TO BE DANCING (Peoples Choice), DANCE, FREAK, AND BOOGIE (Nitelife Unlimited), and many, many more. . .including FLASHDANCE, STAR WARS/CANTINA by Meco, ON THE RADIO, AFTER DARK, I LOVE AMERICA, I FOUND LOVE, and other selections by The Village People.
True, some cuts are definitely not full length, but most are and available all on one grand collection set! A must. . .

5 out of 5 stars Now I Have It!.......2006-09-13

Finally I have the most awaited compilation! I hope the PolyGram/Universal folks will consider producing volume 2 of this album which contains more full-lenght/extended tracks in the near future. It really sells.

5 out of 5 stars CASABLANCA RECORDS BOX SET.......2006-01-29

I will be honest I am not a real big disco fan. There are only two Disco record companies I liked. One is Salsoul Records and of course the other is Casablanca Records. I bought this box set because it contain a lot of the the 12" full length original versions. Of course it dosen't have all of the songs that this record company released. If you are a Disco fan or just starting out collecting this kind of music. Then you can not go wrong. This is a very good collection. It's worth the investment. Maybe they will release another box set with more of the stars and songs that this record company produced.

4 out of 5 stars Flying High.......2005-10-04

CASABLANCA RECORDS was the brainchild of Neil Bogart, a man who parlayed his good taste and dark good looks into a position of personal fame and charisma seldom enjoyed by any record mogul, who are generally troll like and genuinely ugly. But Bogart had something extra. Some thought he was Humphrey Bogart's son. Like the elder Bogart, he radiated sheer magnetism everywhere he went, and when you went into his inner sanctum it was like paying a visit to Kubla Khan. There's a single disc with Casablanca's greatest hits on it-mostly Donna Summer records like HOT STUFF and BAD GIRLS, but this boxed set actually brings you a variety of rarities some of them for the first time on CD.

Casablanca was originally thought of as a sort of bubblegum disco, due to Bogart's previous involvement with Cameo Parkway Records and especially with Buddah, which had made hits out of a wide range of unlikely material, mostly by white artists but with the occasional black masterpiece like "Oo-o-h Child." When dance music threatened to become big in the early 1970s, Bogart was right in there, directing the attention of his fan base to the likes of Donna Summer. When disco hit, everyone wanted a piece of the Casablanca pie and he found himself stretched in many directions, some of them pretty dire! You can get a good sampling of the glory years in this boxed set, which boasts everything from LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY and FUNKY TOWN to more offbeat selections. Bogart signed everyone from Cher to George Clinton and matched them with house producers, and signed also a longterm contract with the enigmatic king of Eurodisco, Giorgio Moroder, the man whose dark, noir visions of dance music sometimes clashed with Bogart's more lighthearted, "Thank God It's Friday" philosophy. That was OK, it was like having Lennon and McCartney in the same band, there was dynamism going on.

The "Star Wars" theme by MECO was another monster hit, and Casablanca briefly became a house where instrumentals were given a new chance to dominate the charts. However it is for the vocals, often insufferably bad and sweetened by production, that Casablanca's great hits are known. Dennis Parker, for example, sang adequately, but fans bought up LIKE AN EAGLE primarily because he was so hot in his porn incarnation: as Wade Nichols he was one of porn's leading men of the 1970s, and Casablanca was doing their part during the first wave of porn-star chic. You can't go wrong with this package.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album! Very diverse too! .......2004-12-28

I bought this album recently in two ways--I remember these songs, and because two artists on this album--Rick James and Laura Branigan--passed away in 2004. This is more of a way to remember those two artists, yet rock to their classics. There's a good mix of funk numbers by Rick James and Gap Band, new wave stuff by Devo, dance hits by Shannon and Bananarama, and well structured songs by Deniece Williams and KC and the Sunshine Band. All in the course of 75 minutes and 20 songs. I still love Herbie Hancock's Rockit--I played that single a lot back in late 1983! A jazz musician doing hip-hop and actually pulls it off on this funky song! It says 1980-1984, but they have two songs from 1979 that did make an impact in 1980 and the new decade. The first half of the '80s was more music oriented, while the second half depended on big productions and over the top decadence, which was also good too. A lot of people still take potshots at the '80s, but it provided some great music. All of these songs are still heard today on the radio, in stores, on stereos and TV commercials. I still listen to some 1984 songs/albums along with the 2004 contemporary songs that I like now. That Devo song is one that I hear in the current Swiffer commercials and I'm dancing like crazy when that comes on! It's well balanced in the song sequence too. Essex Entertainment did a fine job producing this album and the series of albums they did in 1994, 1995 and 1996 representing 5 years of songs in the 4 different decades. I liked this part of the '80s and this collection is very well done!

I remember that I used to be a big fan of this kind of music when I was growing up and this CD/cassette is a good value, although I no longer have it on cassette cause my tape player ate it but I'm glad that I got to enjoy listening to this CD, my favorite songs on this CD are Blondie: Rapture, Go Go's: We Got the Beat, Laura Branigan: Self Control, Fixx: One Thing Leads to Another, Ray Parker Jr: The Other Woman, Toni Basil: Mickey, Denise Williams: Let's Hear it For the Boy, Gap Band: You Dropped a Bomb on Me and Hall and Oates: You Make My Dreams.

The only song that I don't really care for much on this album is Herbie Hancock: Rockit, it just never really appealed to me but if you love 80's pop music then this CD is a must have and I still wish that I have it.

5 out of 5 stars I'm still dancing.......2001-10-12

Great album! Love the music of this era and almost every song is a winner!

4 out of 5 stars Score! A good 80's compilation!.......2001-07-06

Yeeeeeess! How can you not like an album which opens with "Superfreak", has "Mickey" and "Whip it" in the middle, and ends with "Let the Music Play"?

The sounds are all crisp and well recorded, and these are fabulous dance songs. Rock this town, rock it inside out...whip it! Now whip it good! If you're not a child of the 70's, you might not remebmer these tunes. However, if you're a dedicated 80's fan as I am regardless, you'll get sentimental hearing this album. Definitely good to drive to.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you feel like you're right back in the 80's!.......2000-03-13

This disk is like having your own personal TIME CAPSULE! The music REALLY brings you back there -all the way back to the 80's, one of the BEST decades of music there ever was! If you are a fan of classic 80's music with a truly 80's flare - this disk is for you! It has the Go-Go's, (think: Fast Times At Ridgemont High), Devo, Blondie, Stray Cats, and Ray Parker Jr. singing a really catchy song you might have missed in the eighties; The Other Woman! If you're in your thirties, you will definitely appreciate this disk! A must have for any CD-collection!
