5 out of 5 stars On a High!.......2001-04-20

What a blessing it is that technology can preserve voices like this, sounding their best! This disc, like Lucia Popp's 'Children's Songs and Lullabies', shows the diva, Rita Streich, turning to the demands and restraints of the lied, her lovely coloratura voice now gay, now poignant, in all its clear purity. The spirit of different folksongs (including German, Swiss, French, Italian, English, Russian, Japanese ..) is captured beautifully by Streich, sometimes supported, admirably, by the Singgemeinschaft Rudolf Lamy and especially the Regensburger Domspatzen, notably in 'Der Burgermeister von Wesel' and 'Der Kuckuck'. Her very soft, very high notes, held or tossed off, are thrilling throughout but especially in the Mozart canon 'Ave Maria'. While the personality of the performer is not as striking as Popp's on her disc, Streich's simple rendition of a generous 32 songs gives the listener 79 minutes of magic.

5 out of 5 stars Bel canto at its finest.......2001-02-24

I was overjoyed to see this recording available on CD after many years out of the catalogue. It contains some of the finest singing we are ever likely to hear from a light soprano voice.

Each of the selections has merit; the diction is clear, the voice true and sweet to its highest reaches. Mme Streich was a much-loved singer of Strauss (Richard and Johann) and Mozart and these songs are elevated from folk status to that of great individual arias. The phrasing and musicianship displayed here should be models for many of our current warbles who inhabit the worlds opera houses and concert venues.

I am madly in love with this voice. Needless to say, my review is biased, but one will go far to hear such beautiful singing by a great artist. If you would have your heart broken, and hear the meaning of true "bel canto", listen to Streich's singing of the Jewish lullaby, "Schlof sche, mein Vogele". It is guaranteed to turn stone to water and soften the hardest heart.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful songs.......2007-05-09

A welcome reissue in CD format from old LP's of Carpenters compositions : song cycles of very well known lyrics. Particularly fascinating are the renderings of poems from "Gitanjali", a collection of poems by Rabindranath Tagore in English translated from original Bengali; a work that got Nobel prize in 1913 (Not the Pullitzer prize as mentioned in th accompanying text). The songs on lyrics/poems by other poets, all americans are just as beautiful. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars A flawless and fascinating recital.......2005-04-14

This 2-CD set by soprano Carole Bogard is an absolute must-have for lovers of American songs, song recitals in general, or great singing. Culled from three long-out-of-print LPs and some performance tapes recorded for broadcast in Europe, it includes songs by Carpenter, Flanagan, Copland, Rorem, and the little-known Richard Cumming and John Woods Duke. And yet, there is not a single weak track on the entire set. Every song is interesting (something that cannot be said for many similar recitals recorded today), and each and every song is performed with musical acuity and an attention to words.

Particularly interesting, to me, were the songs by John Alden Carpenter. Largely neglected by modern singers and scholars, Carpenter wrote what many feel is the most successful fusion of classical music with jazz, the ballet tone-poem "Skyscrapers." It had the misfortune to premiere in 1924, the same year as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; but whereas "Rhapsody" was more of a pastiche, "Skyscrapers" blends the jazz and classical aspects flawlessly, producing an exciting and well-crafted work that deserves a wider audience.

The Carpenter songs presented here are not jazzy, but they do reveal a greater depth of feeling and originality in construction than one hears nowadays from the songs of Andre Previn or Jake Heggie. And the other pieces are equally excellent.

I highly recommend this album, especially for Sunday afternoon or summertime listening...between the excellence of the songs and the excellence of Bogard's singing, you just melt into the music and become one with the warm, intimate feeling that this recital engenders.

Philips' 100-volume Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is one of the most ambitious projects ever put together by a record company. For all the debate that will surely ensue over who was chosen and who was passed over, it's obvious that careful, loving attention has gone into the selection of content for the happy 72 to be admitted to this special pantheon (certain especially significant pianists are allotted two or even three volumes, such as Vladimir Horowitz). Each of the handsomely designed, sepia-tinted volumes--adorned with a black and white photo--contains two CDs and a thoughtful essay on the artist in question. Prospective buyers should be aware that this sampler volume offers only short vignettes (averaging between two and three minutes), along with a thumbnail sketch, for each pianist. Still, it's a smorgasbord of morsels that allow you to taste some of the major trends in philosophy and approach to the instrument throughout the century (and reaching well back into the 19th), and the overlap of repertory permits some fascinating quick comparisons as style and technique have evolved. Delve into some of the artists in the series--say Alfred Brendel or Martha Argerich--and trace in greater depth the piano's identity crisis. Is it, for example, a resonantly string-like instrument ideal for pastel shadings or a steely, percussive machine meant to express the hardness of the 20th century? There are countless discoveries to be made here, both for the connoisseur and for anyone taking the first step into getting acquainted with great keyboard artistry. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Tantalizing preview of good things to come.......2003-01-07

This is an introductory 2-CD set to introduce a very grand series of CD's featuring the 20th Century's greatest pianists.
As a sampler, there are some incredible jewels here, for example Nikita Magaloff's sparkling Chopin Tarantelle and Paganini Etude No.3: 'La Campanella' played excitingly by John Ogdon. There is even an early recording of Paderewski playing (predictably) Paderewski.

This sampler seems a bit of a Euro-centric, but the editors wisely chose to include Earl Wild doing Gershwin and Roslyn Tureck doing Bach. I ended up purchasing the Andre Watts volume from this series, and wondered what it would be like to own the whole shootin' match. I saw the entire CD series on display in a top notch music store in Germany--it was overwhelming to see the line of brown covers stretching impressively across an entire wall. The sampler is a good way to have a taste of this ambitious series of the giants of piano in the 20th Century. I listen to it often with great enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars RE: Glenn Gould.......2001-05-23

RE: Those of you who complained/rejoiced about Gould's abscence: he is not on the sampler, true, I believe for... purposes or something along those lines. Rudolf Serkin is also not included, but both are among the "greatest pianists of the 20th Century" set.

5 out of 5 stars Missing no one except Katia Skanavi.......2001-04-19

I was pleased after reading the list of performers to see that Gould's machine-gun jiffy-pop piano "playing" is not included. I would like to hear more of Skanavi tho.

    3 out of 5 stars Forget Somebody?.......2000-09-21

Although I understand that it must have been very diffiult to decide which pianists got put in the collection, let alone a two-disc sampler, I still feel that any anthology of the piano (other than one highlighting the romantic era)should contain at least one piece by Gould, yet this one doesn't. Gould has been almost unanimously hailed as one of the most influential artist of the twentieth century, yet he is not included on this disc. Other than that, a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Unparalled Excellence (Mark G. Davis).......1999-08-01

If you only purchase one classical piano cd in your entire life, this one should be it. All the masters, at their very best on it.

If you have piano cd's, this should be part of that collection. I purchased one, almost not believing what I read on the jacket. I'm telling my friends about this one, as I'm aware of no other CD having all those piano masters - - at any price?)...
