There are times when descriptive adjectives such as "dumb" are not meant in the least bit as negatives. In pop music, these tend to be some of the best times you can have, of course: big, dumb, fun times. Throwing garage rock, metal, and new wave riffs together with disco beats and ironic lyrics, the Detroit-based Electric 6 made a pretty big splash with incredibly stupid and fun songs such as "Gay Bar" and "Danger! High Voltage." Nothing on here quite hits with the force of those hits, and the cover of Queen's "Radio Ga Ga" is so obvious it misses the mark entirely. But by no means have this act gotten serious or boring: like Urge Overkill before them, E6 know incredibly well how to have rock & roll fun with tongue planted firmly in cheek. If you do as well, you could do far worse than Señor Smoke. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Detroit's Electric Six quickly made a name for themselves in the UK and US with hit singles "Gay Bar" and "Danger! High Voltage". "Senor Smoke" was released in the UK in early 2005 to much acclaim. Metropolis, interested in broadening the scope of music they released, signed the band and is proud to now bring them back to their native soil. "Senor Smoke" blends a mixture of disco, garage, punk, and indie rock with clever (but sincere) tongue in cheek one liners. Electric Six will change the way you perceive rock in 2006.

5 out of 5 stars THE CHILD DEVIANT.......2006-12-04

This is my first Electric Six album, and I must say....I Love the hell out of it!!!! How to describe the style of music...err, ...umm....I guess it's kinda disco-metal, or something wiered like that. It's truly a hilarious album that makes you giggle your a** off, and yet, it's not cheesey or un-talented. The music is actually verry good. All in all....Wow! What a fun record!

5 out of 5 stars ....TURN THIS ONE UP TO ELEVEN.......2006-09-09

I bought Fire about a year ago and played the s!*t out it!. Amazing feaux-dace/rock/a little metal. Q: What was it? A: Awesome.

I saw them live in Chicago. They played a small venue and melted my face off. Very Fun!

Bought Senor Smoke, got it home any ran through it a couple of times. My initial review would be not as consistent as Fire, but the highs are higher. That highest point would be "Be My Dark Angel". While a little clumsy ("I was walkin' down the street, you were walking down the street, so I had to cross the street to get to your side of the street") has a great "build-up" intro and crushing guitar chord that would make Aldo Nova or Bon Jovi say "Why didn't I think of that?". It crescendos nicely into a bouncy, bititng chorus.

The album also opens with the anthemic Rock and Roll Evacuation that has a fist pumping chorus. Dance Epidemic rocks with a more.....well...dance/disco sound.

Bite Me and Vibrator are twisted, funny, uncomfortable and rockin' all at the same time somehow.

I'm a little dismayed by the more socially reflective tracks, Jimmy Carter, Future Boys, Taxi to Nowhere. They sound outdated, but have some melodic hooks as a saving grace. I do occasionally find myself skipping them to get to the meaty stuff on the CD.

This collection of songs come off a little disjointed on the same album, but that actually detracts very little from the fact that this album has some amazing, silly, wild stuff on it. It's a very fun album.

My advice would be to buy Fire and then Senor Smoke. Put them on the good stereo in the den and tell the wife and kids to "go outside, daddy's gonna' rock now." I pre-ordered Switzerland, their forthcoming album and have high hopes and new speakers. Can't wait.

Best small venue show I ever saw, too. Check and see if there coming to your town and get a ticket to see Dick Valentine and the wild ride that is E6.

3 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as good as Fire!.......2006-06-06

Senor Smoke lacks the consistency of their debut Fire. Every track on Fire was classic but this album has hits and misses. The highlights are Dance Epidemic, Rock And Roll Evacuation and Be My Dark Angel, in that order. I don't know why Radio Ga Ga was released. This is one of the weakest tracks on the album. No question Dance Epidemic should have been the first single. It has the fun, edgy, decadent disco-rock energy that characterised Fire. What's with the Pleasing Interludes? Pointless and not even funny "she don't like it too hot, she don't like it too cold, rooooom temparature....roooom temperature...". They've truly lost their way. Taxi to nowhere is utter bollocks. Rock and Roll Evacuation is a very catchy song about "evil boys eating evil hamburgers...", it tries to pack the word evil (pronounced "ee-ville" as opposed to the Aussie pronunciation "e-vl") as many times as possible. Be My Dark Angel has a wierd riff that sticks in your head and lead singer Dick Valentine does what he does best- singing in his sexy, over-the-top, decadent, immoral way. That's it folks. Check my review for Fire and why it's a much superior album.

3 out of 5 stars Danger! Low Voltage!.......2006-03-13

When Danger! High Voltage began seeping into the public consciousness in early 2003, many wondered a) who the hell was behind this catchy and gimmicky tune and b) how much of their 15 minutes was left on the clock. Defying the well-trod path of one hit wonder luminaries such as Sir Mixalot, Afroman and Grandmaster Chicken & DJ Duck, Electric Six proceeded to preposterously deliver one of the albums of 2003 when Fire dropped mid-year. Deftly managing to sing even with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, Dick Valentine and his roster of musicians not only delivered fun music in Gay Bar, Synthesizer and Dance Commander, they also left a legacy of excellent video clips in their wake. Continuing the tradition of deranged and hilarious promos, Senor Smoke's initial single Radio Ga Ga has already appalled Queen fans with its depiction of Dick Valentine waltzing over Freddy Mercury's grave. While Senor Smoke has much to live up to after its predecessor cleverly dodged the critical bullets, there's still some classic Electric Six moments here for those in on the joke. Absurdist lyrics are again in glut supply, with Rock And Roll Evacuation (`Mr President, I don't like you - you don't know how to rock!'), Boy Or Girl? (`Now you see the unavoidable is hard to avoid') and Jimmy Carter (`You're a celebrity that drives off a bridge in a car - your beautiful body filling up with water') offering some of the more head-spinning moments. Beat poetry, Backstreet Boys lyrics and startlingly political attacks may make for strange bedfellows, but Senor Smoke for the most part works well. While they have so far eluded the piss poor status of the laughable Sir Mixalot, it will be the third Electric Six album that will prove whether Dick Valentine and his cronies are the canny musicians they would appear to be. For now, it seems that their raging Fire has been reduced to Smoke.

4 out of 5 stars Same dough recipe, new cookie cutters. Awesome........2006-03-12

If you liked Fire, you'll like Senior Smoke. There's no Gay Bar on here, but it's still got some gems like Rock and Roll Evacuation. When I saw them at the Key Club in Hollywood, the crowd went nuts for it. Moshing and everything. So great.

3 out of 5 stars Do your homework..........2006-04-04

Sure, E6's cover of Queens "Radio Ga Ga" isn't the greatest. Rarely ever does a cover song live up to the original. But if anyone who reviewed this CD would have done their homework they would have known that recording it wasn't their idea. The following, taken directly from the Electric Six site at www.electricsix.com, should give more info:

"In Feb. 2005, our second record Senor Smoke was released in the UK and Australia. We felt this record was stronger than its predecessor and demonstrated our growth as musicians and men. Warner Music UK had a different take. They believed our strength lay in covering Queen and they also believed the wisest marketing strategy was to bypass the wealthiest country in the world. They showed us surveillance pictures of our relatives and told us that if we wanted to increase the odds of them eating solid food for the rest of their lives, then we better get into that studio and cough up some Queen. "

Please ignore the other reviews of this disc and find another Electric Six recording to judge them by.

1 out of 5 stars The joke wears thin........2006-02-24

I must admit to having a soft spot for Electric Six. Their style of comedy rock has more edge and genuine wit than the crop of gurning "hey, we're dorks, duuude" idiots that usually are associated with the genre, and their "Fire" album was full of infectious gems. And they gave us two of the best singles in the last decade, "Danger: High Voltage" and "Gay Bar". I've seen them live too, and they were a blast.

But this is the sound of a joke that isn't funny anymore, and a band who really have ran out of ideas and hits. I never cared for Radio Ga Ga the first time around, I still think it's one of Queen's weakest songs, and this banal cover does nothing to further the cause.

The video is often misinterpreted by knee-jerk reactionary idiots who think Dick Valentine is dancing on Freddie's grave, when he clearly isn't. That isn't my concern here. It just shows a band that have resorted to covering a famous song and hoping wearing a pair of comedy teeth will let them get away with it.

No chance. The single still stiffed in Britain, and they haven't been seen since. I really hope it's NOT the last we see of E6, because they do have their moments. But they need a total overhaul before they would ever be considered a genuine band.

The last batch of reviews I've done have been fun, poking fun at rubbish things. This is different; it's awful, don't get me wrong, but it's no fun telling you about it. But hey, The Curmudgeon tells it like it is. Sigh.

        [...]

4 out of 5 stars Lighten up already.......2005-02-10

While nothing can hope to surpass Queen's original, Electric Six's cover is respectable though admittedly not wholly inspired, and I actually consider the video to be not disrespectful but (gasp!) an affectionate and appropriately cheeky homage to Frederick (Farokkh) Bulsara, aka Freddie Mercury. I think Freddie -- in his own absurdist, over-the-top style -- would have approved. To go off making accusations of homophobia smacks of self-righteous PC and is seriously missing the point (if the previous review is a reference to their song "Gay Bar", which is actually quite fun and tongue-in-cheek ... even one of my gay friends is a big fan). Electric Six are still one of the few bands making it safe for rockers and dancers, gays and straights alike to unite and start nuclear war on the dance floor!

        1 out of 5 stars Bile........2005-01-23

If you're going to cover a song by the most influencial British rock band in the history of music, you need to make sure you have the talent to back it up. Electric Six have not only covered the Queen song Radio Ga Ga, but have made a music video that depicts Freddie Mercury dancing on his own grave, which is the most disgusting and disrespectful thing I have ever known in music. What's worse, Electric Six are perhaps one of the very worst bands ever formed. A group of people (there are five of them, by the way) who have no interest in the business, who are only making alledged 'music' to poke fun at homosexuals, and generally p!ss off anyone who takes anything seriously.

Even just one star seems to understate just how pathetic this single is. The best phrase for it is 'audible diarrhoea'. At least diarrhoea is passing.

So there you have it. Electric Six - not so much 'legends' as 'bell-ends'.

Do yourself a favour and ignore this cringe-inducing bilge.

Or do someone else a favour - buy it, then set fire to it so that nobody else need suffer listening to it.

        5 out of 5 stars A truly great singer!.......2004-08-17

Ingvar Wixell has always been one of my favourite singers. He's a genuine baritone, no bass-baritone, and he's got a light timbre that one just must envy him for. This cd shows all the aspects of his voice and also of his dramatic side.
Ok, I must admit I'm not that keen on some of the songs, I'd rather seen an album with just his opera arias, but since there is no album like that this one will have to do. The intonation is impeccable and his voice, as always, crystal clear.
        It's a must buy!

I've heard about all of the angry Queen fans around the world who are outraged by the video of this song. Give me a break. Queen is one of my favorite bands and this song is just a fun paean to the kind of absurdity that Queen, particularly Freddie Mercury, fully endorsed. One of my best friends worships Queen as the greatest band in history, but he enjoyed this song! I'm sure that Freddie Mercury is laughing in rock heaven right now, and that he would definitely enjoy seeing Dick Valentine doing a parody of him. Electric Six is just good, rocking fun, and the whole homophobia thing is just music critic B.S.

4 out of 5 stars Lighten up already.......2005-02-08

While nothing can hope to surpass Queen's original, Electric Six's cover is respectable though perhaps not wholly inspired, and I actually consider the video to be not tasteless but (gasp!) a touching and appropriately cheeky homage to Frederick (Faroukh) Bulsara, aka Freddie Mercury. I think Freddie would have approved. To go off making accusations of homophobia smacks of self-righteous PC and is seriously missing the point (are you making some reference to their song "Gay Bar" which is actually quite fun and tongue in cheek ... even one of my gay friends is a big fan). Electric Six are still one of the few bands making it safe for rockers and dancers, gays and straights alike to unite start nuclear war on the dance floor!

2 out of 5 stars Yet ANOTHER Queen orchestral album?.......2000-08-19

I fail to understand why this CD was released. After 4-5 similar albums (most done by the same people, the RPO) you'd think it's target audience would be satisfied. Not much can be said for this album, I've heard most of these songs re-done before and no new ground was broken here. I bought this CD solely because of the inclusion of Freddie Mercury's solo tracks, "The Great Pretender" & "Barcelona". It was nice to hear "Barcelona" with a proper orchestra instead of the cheesy synths Freddie used in the original to *try* to imitate a real one. A chorus of singers are used often in this album but they add nothing of value to the tracks....often sounding "ho-hum" to me.Unless you are a rabid Queen completist, don't waste your time or money on this release.

4 out of 5 stars Only for die-hard collectors ? Not sure !.......2000-08-17

I personnaly am a Queen fan. I immediately bought this disc even if I was pretty skeptical about the quality of the recordings. But the Philarmonic Orchestra is a reference. Some songs sound very well, played by the Philarmonic such as "Save Me" or "We Are The Champions". Nevertheless some other choices are more disputable. If you want to discover Queen in an interesting way, if you want to slightly introduce your parents to Rock 'n' Roll (!), just get this record. But don't forget to also buy a genuine Queen record after that (if you don't already have at least one) or it doesn't make any sense at all !
