Album Description

Over the years, Putumayo World Music has introduced audiences to collections of exceptional music from around the globe, proving that no matter how diverse, all people share a common bond. One of Putumayo's goals has been to introduce people to other cultures as a way of helping to overcome prejudice and bring people of different backgrounds together. Nothing accomplishes this goal like music.

One World, Many Cultures highlights cross-cultural collaborations between western artists and some of the top names in contemporary world music. Featured collaborations include Algerian Cheb Mami and Jamaica's Ziggy Marley, internationally known Jamaican artists Toots and the Maytals alongside country legend Willie Nelson, blues legend Taj Mahal teams with Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté and singer Ramatou, and Senegal's Youssou N'Dour, Ethiopia's Gigi, and the United Kingdom's Lena Fiagbe. All of these artists reach beyond their national borders for cultural expression and musical inspiration.

Putumayo will donate $1 from the sale of every One World, Many Cultures CD to the non-profit organization Search For Common Ground, which works to transform the way the world deals with conflict.

5 out of 5 stars Third Copy I've Bought.......2007-05-10

I've just purchased the 3rd copy of the same CD - my friends love it too !

5 out of 5 stars Celebrity duets,world-music style.......2007-01-04

Duets have become the IN THING.From reggae star Wyclef Jean collaborating with Shakira in "Hips don't lie" to Timbaland's collaborations with Justin Timberlake in "SexyBack"&Nelly Furtado in "Promiscuous" as well as Tony Bennett's recent duet album with k.d.lang,Elton John,George Michael, the Dixie Chicks&Sir Paul McCartney, duets are all the rage.

Putumayo has gotten in on the act--and this album was the perfect conclusion for 2006."One World,Many Cultures" is a wondrous, haunting compilation of world music duets.

The album opens with Wasis Diop&Lena Fiagbe's dreamlike, trancey "African Dream." The Idan Raichel Project's "Bo'ee" unites a mystical Ethiopian chorus with Israeli techno.Alan Stivell&Youssou N'Dour's "United Earth" (which was also on Putumayo's now out-of-print "Dublin to Dakar")gracefully fuses Senegalese vocals with Celtic music. The unlikely collaboration of country singer Willie Nelson with the reggae group the Toots&the Maytals results in the strangely hypnotic "Still is still moving to me." The Malian group Tama&the Indian singer Susheela Raman have the haunting "Snimbe." Baka Beyond presents an enchanting instrumental as an interlude. The Ethiopian Gigi's "Utopia" is magical, showing the alchemy of her recent "Gold&Wax" album. The Middle Eastern vocals on the Fadoua/Jerome Lamasset collaboration make "Yalil-Belle Futile" mysterious&powerful. The album closes with an unlikely duet between reggae heir Ziggy Marley&the Prince of Rai,Cheb Mami.Instead of sounding forced,"Madanite" skillfully interweaves Cheb Mami's vocal gymnastics with Marley's shuffling reggae beat.

The album art shows some of the artists.

Top row (left to right)-Idan Raichel (Israel),Gigi (Ethiopia),Cheb Mami (Algeria)

Bottom row (left to right)-Susheela Raman (India),Taj Mahal (USA),Ziggy Marley (Jamaica)

"One World,Many Cultures" is a step above duet albums that are popular these days. It's a perfect addition to any world music library--and a great introduction to world fusion for the casual listener."One World,Many Cultures" is "easy listening"--in a GOOD way.

4 out of 5 stars International Fusion Served with Uncommon Dexterity on Another Fine Putumayo Collection.......2006-11-22

Putumayo continues to provide the breadth of world music with this winning collection that may contain some of the most unlikely cross-cultural collaborations but true to the disc's title, shows how compatible musicians can be when they have sensibilities that transcend international borders. All the songs share a relaxing quality that makes the listener curious about the origins of the sounds, which is exactly the intent of this global compendium. Musicians famous in their native lands dominate the first two tracks - "African Dream" teams Senegalese performer Wasis Diop with British soul chanteuse Lena Fiagbe on an infectiously loping track, while "Bo'ee" is driven by the Israeli ensemble, the Idan Raichel Project, which seamlessly blends ancient musical traditions with contemporary hi-tech sounds.

The international superstars come into play with Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour performing with Breton singer/harpist Alan Stivell on Stivell's driving Celtic brotherhood anthem, "A United Earth I"; Willie Nelson's "Still Is Still Moving to Me" featuring reggae mainstays Toots and the Maytals with Toots Hibbert and Nelson casually trading world-weary vocals; and blues great Taj Mahal reinventing his classic "Queen Bee" in a West African mode, joined appropriately by two Malian performers, kora player Toumani Diabaté and singer Ramata Diakité. The Malian-Guinean band Tama, led by British guitarist Sam Mills and Malian kora player Tom Diakité, contributes an intoxicating beat on "Snimbe" with Mills' wife, Susheela Raman, a Sanskrit specialist singer providing sonorous vocals.

Cross-cultural band Baka Beyond strips down into a three-member ensemble, EtÉ, and provides an instrumental track that's an intriguing mix of Celtic-flavored violin and West African drums. Two female singers are showcased on separate tracks - Ethiopian singer Gigi offers her hope for world unity in the beat-heavy "Utopia", while Moroccan singer Fadoua provides the Arabic chant weaving through French musician Jérôme Lamasset's flavorful "Yalil-Belle Futile". Congolese singer Martin Kongo provides the relaxing vocals on Italian composer Rocca De Rosa's "Malonghi". The best track is saved for last, as Algerian rai superstar Cheb Mami partners with Jamaican reggae scion Ziggy Marley on a propulsive world mix called "Madanite". International fusion can be a dicey proposition, but leave it to Putumayo to bring taste, energy and true musicianship together for this terrific compilation disc.

4 out of 5 stars New, cool, refreshing!.......2006-11-16

Just picked this up. Brand new and very refreshing! A nice blend of cultures and styles. Many collaborations. I think Come With Me is the best song on the album. This album is for the hardcore Putumayo fan! Willie Nelson and Toots & the Maytals??? Are you kidding me? Awesome and amazing! This album works and you can't figure out why... then it hits you - PUTUMAYO!

Also note that on Amazon song listing, #6 should read SNIMBE by Tama featuring Susheela Raman.

Les Nubians have carved out a name for themselves as the sexy soul sisters with a thirst for jazz grooves and hip-hop beats. But the Faussart girls are switching gears on their third album, creating a 21-track aural excursion filled with rich array of guest poets reading, rapping and slamming in English and French. The verbosity means there is less focus on Helene and Celia's beautiful Afro-pean voices and harmonies, not to mention their bumpin' grooves, but the poets¹ stories are vivid. Tracks like "Fire" and "NYC" highlight the new sound, while songs like "Rendez-vous New York" and the French language "Les Entrailes du Monde" are a musical reveries equal to past glories. Echos isn't really follow up to the two previous albums. It's more of a response to HBO' s Mos Def-hosted Def Poetry Jam and the countless other poets out there performing. Here it's simply channeled through the unique and musical aesthetic of the French-Cameroonian sisters. --Tad Hendrickson

Album Description

The singing sisters and "modern day Nubian griots" of LES NUBIANS, Helene and Celia Faussart, have returned from yet another fantastic voyage, and have many poetic tales to share on their new album LES NUBIANS PRESENTS: ECHOS-CHAPTER ONE-NUBIAN VOYAGER. A musical expedition of poetry and song featuring 4 new Les Nubians tracks, the conception of this album came to Helene Faussart on a memorable Feluqua boat trip while traveling with her sister Celia in Aswan, Nubia in 2000. This chic, multi-part album showcases Les Nubians' lifelong affinity for poetry, be it their own words, or those of other poets they have met along their many tours and travels since 1999, mingled with sultry Afro-soul and hip hop grooves. They have also included three new tracks- "I Disagree," "Rendez-vous New York" (a duet with John Banzai) and 'Solide'.

Recorded in NY, Paris, Bordeaux, London, Marseilles and San Francisco, Echos is divided into four parts: La Terre/The Motherland, Dans Le Ville/Urban City Life, Des Hommes et Des Femmes/Love Stories, and Les Elements/Spiritual Human Nature. Each chapter is introduced by Les Nubians and features an array of gifted French, African and American word craftsmen, such as Souleymane Diamanka, Queen GodIs, John Banzaï & C.Lia, Jamarhl Crawford and Nazeelah Jameson.

Their previous two acclaimed albums charted impressively in the Billboard Top 200, each respectively the highest debut for a French language album in the past 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars A Spoken Word Triumph!.......2005-11-05

Les Nubians took a chance and stepped out into a new realm by spotlighting some of best spoken word artists on this continent and abroad, and I am loving it! The album still has that Les Nubians feel, but it is now more textured with the addition of this beautiful poetry. Every song on it is strong and evokes a feeling of being right there in the moment. It is jazzy, thoughtful, soulful, continental, and just downright fly!

5 out of 5 stars Ecouter.......2005-10-28

I purchased Les nubians cd entitled "Princess Nubiennes" after I saw the video for Makeda and have continued to follow their releases including "Echos." Les Nubians Presents "Echos" Includes music in french and english as well as poetry in english and french. If you do not speak or understand french this cd will make you want to learn the language. The spoken word artists and the music behind their poetry will make you feel at peace as you listen to the nature type instruments and sound effects in the back ground. This is a sit back and relax cd. At times the cd includes Manifestos such as the Track "heaven" and spoken word pieces in which queen godIs Shouts "Fire!" and "Freeeedommm" as she discusses issues of slavery, progress, "blackness," and her lyrical prowess's. Les Nubians also presents a live version of "Demain" Ca veut dire "Tommorow" and Embrasse- Moi (which you may be able to infer.) de le premier CD "Princess Nubienne" cd. This cd is a reflection of creative energy from across the globe, from Ny, France et Afrique that creates a cd laced with beauty and art for your listening and cognitive pleasures. Acheter maitenant!

4 out of 5 stars Spoken Word and Grooves.......2005-10-05

To the Queen -(Jamarhl Crawford)

I disagree -(Les Nubians)
Embrasse moi - Deep mix (Les Nubians)
Fire - (Queen GodIs)

3 out of 5 stars great if you don't mind a DJ.......2007-01-19

I love these Putamayo collections, but this one has a child "DJ" talking over the beginning of every song. While interesting, I use this with my music class, so the talking is disruptive. The music is great though!

5 out of 5 stars High energy that makes me smile (and sometimes dance).......2006-04-23

I heard Skylar interviewed on NPR: they played part of a song, and I liked it -- but it was Skylar's energy and enthusiasm for the music that made me run to my laptop and buy the CD. I listen to it over and over: some of the songs make you just JUMP up and start dancing or doing exercises...and it's hard to listen to Skylar talk without smiling. His enthusiasm is infectious.

I don't know what a sick child would make of this, but I DO know that for this adult, it works. If I'm feeling sad, or blah, Skylar's voice - and the songs he's chosen - restores me to cheerfulness. Thank you, Skylar (and the parents who encouraged you and the record company that had the good sense to publish this!. We need more books and records that are truly joyous.

--Libby Koponen, author of BLOW OUT THE MOON
"Libby's joyous times at Sibton Park make you laugh out loud" (child's review; adults gave the book two prizes for excellence in children's books, and Booklist gave it a starred review)

    Album Description

This is a one-man tribute to Depeche Mode, complete with two new instrumental interludes. The album reinvents eleven of the most underappreciated Depeche Mode songs and also includes the track 'Ponytail Girl' which is a Color Theory original that has been mistaken for a Depeche Mode bonus track from the Exciter album! Color Theory is the musical alter-ego of Huntington Beach singer/keyboardist/songwriter Brian Hazard. Hazard creates piano-driven electronic pop, combining the emotional intensity of Tori Amos with the spacious backdrop of subtle pads and muted rhythms. Depeche-Mode.com wrote of this tribute CD, ''We give it the thumbs up and warmly recommend that all Mode fans pick this one up.''

This is actually the first time I've ever submitted a review but as I was browsing through reviews of this product I felt compelled to do so. Some of the reviews here are fully of praise for these covers even goin so far as to suggest that these "covers" are better than the original, better than the real deal. Now, I've heard the tracks and while Hazard does seem to have talent and should be commended for his appreciation of the Mode, IMO as a lifelong student of DM since 1985, he is not in Depeche's league. "Martin Gore needs lessons from Color Theory"?! Tracks like "I am you" and "Sister of night" are superior to the originals? Am I in some sort of incomprehensible netherworld where people have lost their mind? How can a remake be better than the original? The "cover" artist here is not creating sonic magic from "nothing" (to cite another classic DM track); he is merely embellishing on what already existed there in terms of lyrics, chords, melodies, and song structure. I agree that Hazard's versions are more creative than some of the countless others out there, but they still sound lightweight in comparison to Depeche Mode's minor chord majesty. He offers a lighter take on the Mode that for me reduces the drama and impact of the original songs. While some reviewers might enjoy the uptempo versions of classics like "I want you now" and "I am you," these DM "fans" seem to miss the point of the originals. "I want you now" is meant to be desperate and oppressive and challenging. If that 's not one's cup of tea, then perhaps the lighthearted bounce of Erasure, et al. is more fitting for their palette. Also, DM's "Sister of Night" is flat and emotionless. Are you kidding me? That haunting song is punctuated by one of Gahan's most yearningly tragic vocals! The sliding windbells towards the end of the song are goosebump inducing. Hazard's take on these songs dilute the songs of their original atmosphere. Now, remember the only reason such criticism is being leveled is because the covers, some of which are being heralded as superior, need to be put in perspective against the achievement of the original songs. Also, I'm sorry but Hazard's voice does not come near to matching Gore's rich tenor, let alone Gahan's dynamic, sexually charged yet tender vocalizations. Depeche Mode are Depeche Mode because they occupy a unique position in music. They have created their own genre that has lasted over a half century. They have stuck to their vision and we as fans should be appreciative rather than dismissive of that. I can't think of a song of theirs that I dislike, not out of blindness but out of the fact that I'm a true devotee who looks forward to what their genius will reveal next. Lastly, do you think Hazard could sell out stadiums around the globe? DM, the definitive and perhaps only arena/stadium electronic rock band can!!! Well, to quote a comrade of DM's, Robert Smith, I've perhaps said too much, been too unkind. As a Mode maniac, I just needed to get that off my chest!

5 out of 5 stars Not to be dismissed as just another DM tribute..........2006-07-11

I am usually a sceptic when it comes to tribute albums, especially when it comes to a group that I hold in such high regard. However, Color Theory provides a fresh take on these much loved but often overlooked Depeche Mode songs. Intricately crafted synthpop arrangements accompany beautiful vocals to add a new emotional dimension to each song. Upon first listen, the surpringly upbeat "I Want You Now" and the passionate "Surrender" particularly stand out, bringing out the depth and emotional complexity of the original songs. Worth a listen for both the devoted Depeche Mode fan and the casual listener.

4 out of 5 stars covering good territory.......2005-11-04

inspiring interpretations that add any further dimensions and textures to quite wonderful songs.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for interesting DM covers.......2005-07-16

What I look for in a cover is something that maintains the integrity of the original but adds something new or interesting, and this album definitely makes the grade. (in contrast to most of the covers on 'for the masses,' which add nothing to the originals)

First and foremost, the piano on 'but not tonight' is incredible. rain. for me it was dangerous to touch this song since i love the original so much, have the single, etc. but the piano, the piano...it goes straight to my heart, and i can see the raindrops plopping and bouncing off the streetlamp lit ground with the piano strokes, and dave gahan dancing around in circles with his arms out, face turned up to the sky, ruining his leather boots in the rain.

My other favorite on this album is 'it doesn't matter', with these lovely bells. and i like how it ends it with the line "i am happy, i am happy, i am happy even though you're not here now." which is a better closing line, and the repetition of the "I am happy" part leaves the listener to think about whether the singer is truly happy and ok with the situation, or whether he is trying to convince himself that he is happy.

The pace and dancy-ness of "i want you now" gives it a different feel, makes it lighter, flirtier, a little less...desperate, sleazy....
conversely, the heavy beat on 'one caress' makes it a little more insistent, with a deeper emotion, or urgency, rather than the more sweet character of the original.

The ending of 'world full of nothing' is this very interesting, beautiful, eastern-esque instrumental interlude, like peacefully pondering love, pondering the world, is it full of nothing? maybe it's peacefully full of nothing?

"I am you" is better than the original, which I find boring except for the ending with the orchestration. Color Theory's version is a little faster, with a more interesting instrumentation. It changes dynamics and uses silence in ways that make the song move somewhere, so that you can FEEL something- it's far more emotional than the original.

"sister of night" is another song in which color theory makes it loads better than the original by making it more emotional. For me, the original is largely one emotion and every time I want it to get more or less intense, it doesn't. So the original feels so flat for me.
Color theory's version has an interesting intro, with a different beat and instruments/sounds, and it sets it up in a way to allow for darkness of different kinds, it can increase intensity so that it becomes more urgent, then releases the tension with the piano which is, for me, calming, but not necessarily less dark.
