I cant believe I found this cd, its awesome.
It has all the best 5* songs and it brings back the great dance beat.
They have a likeness to The Jacksons and DeBarge and yet still they hold their own.
All the songs a great and they still sound great today.

5 out of 5 stars 100% Satisfied.......2006-08-11

This album is great, Five Star is a group I grew up listening to in the 80's a must have. It came in my post right on time when I need some musical upliftment. Good packaging, great music what more can I ask for. Thank you, I recommend this seller and product to all the old school 80's fanatics like me. Cheers.

3 out of 5 stars 5 Star..........2005-10-28

I recently bought "5 Star - the greatest hits" just to "catch up" with the group. "Let me be the one" is definitely the best song on the collection! I must rate the rest of the material as "Okay." Three stars...I'm going to give this collection another listen...if their material grows on me...maybe I'll raise my rating (and change my review!)

5 out of 5 stars A real greatest hits album.......2004-11-03

Five star is a familygroup from England. Two brothers and three sisters who became popstars and had some great successes in the eighties, especially in England. All these songs were hits in England and a lot of them also in the Netherlands, where I come from; they were quite popular. Hits like All fall down, Let me be the one, Find the time, Rain or shine and The slightest touch are catchy tunes, which were played a lot in the clubs in '85/ '86 and '87. Five star still makes records (Eclipse 2001) and the family lives in the States since 1990. I am a fan since day one and will always stay a fan. Especially the leadsinger Denise has a superb voice. This album represents the best of their work, but do not forget to check their latest album, which is still of the same high quality.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS

As compilations go, this one is not bad but there are still certain omissions. Disc One draws on albums like Portfolio (1977), Fame (1978), Muse (1979) and Warm Leatherette (1980), whilst Disc Two draws on Nightclubbing (1981), Living My Life (1982), Slave To The Rhythm (1985), Inside Story (1986) and Bulletproof Heart (1989). The third disc contains special remixes and extended versions, including the demo of Ring Of Fire.

The tracks are arranged chronologically so it maps out her musical development from the disembodied robotic 1970s disco sounds of La Vie En Rose and Send In The Clowns through her new wave experiments with Private Life, her torch song phase on the Nightclubbing album up to the funky R&B of My Jamaican Guy and on to the pure pop of I'm Not Perfect and Love On Top Of Love.

She wasn't taken seriously as a musician up until the release of Warm Leatherette in 1980, but I have always enjoyed her early disco work, especially the Portfolio album with its great tracks like Tomorrow, Send In The Clowns, I Need A Man and La Vie en Rose.

The following album, Fame, was weaker but still contained a sprinkling of memorable disco musings like Autumn Leaves (not here) and Do Or Die. The almost totally unknown Sinning and Saved are powerful numbers from the rare Muse album.

Warm Leatherette really put her on the musical map, especially her version of the title track that was an obscure synth-pop single by Daniel Miller's The Normal. She also did interesting versions of Private Life (The Pretenders) and Love Is The Drug (Roxy Music).

Disc Two, tracks 2 to 6 come from Jones' very commercially successful Nightclubbing album. I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango) and Walking In the Rain are witty, accessible pop ballads while the funky Pull Up To The Bumper is controversially sensual. The tracks from Nipple To The Bottle to My Jamaican Guy are jerky, funky and tribal with stunning vocal arrangements - all from the innovative Living My Life album.

Victor and I'm Not Perfect come from the underrated Inside Story (1986), which also contains gems like Barefoot In Beverly Hills and the soaring title track, both omitted here. Love On Top Of Love is the only track from Bulletproof Heart (1989) and a poor choice; I would have selected Amado Mio and Someone To Love.

Devoted fans will appreciate the 12-inch dance mixes on Disc Three. My favorites are She's Lost Control, Ring Of Fire and Slave To The Rhythm. This is the most extensive of the various Grace Jones compilations available as of this writing. I'm giving it 5 stars because it does offer a stunning selection of tracks. A box set is the ultimate answer to a completely comprehensive Grace Jones collection.

5 out of 5 stars No superlative good enough for this found in my thesaurus.......2006-03-16

Below you will find a lengthy analysis of the opening song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.

This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.

The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.

(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding." (Look at other Jackson 5 albums here on Amazon for the mentioned sound snippets.)
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?

Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.

One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.

I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.

Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?

Album Description

When people talk about the `Motown sound' they usually mean the golden period of the 1960s, the mighty pop soul ballads of Smokey Robinson, or jive-perfect dancers by the likes of the Supremes or Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. It's often forgotten that, along with many of its artists, Motown adapted well to the 70s disco boom and the new sounds coming out of labels such as Salsoul, Philadelphia International and TK. And, ironically, that it produced many of the 70s and early 80s disco classics on which today's dance sound is more genuinely based. In the late 70s, with the demise of their Invictus label, the legendary Holland brothers (who had written so many of Motown's 60s classics with their partner Lamont Dozier) returned to the Motown camp to join multi-talented song writing teams such as Ashford & Simpson, Sawyer & McLeod and Mike & Brenda Sutton who were all able to perfectly capture the essence of the disco era. And the soulful vocalists and stellar musicians already in house at Motown were able to carry it all off with the sort of performances the material deserved. Of course, Motown's two biggest hitters, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, also both made their very best records in the 70s, and both dabbled successfully in disco from time to time. Add funky new acts like Rick James, Stone City Band and Teena Marie and Motown pretty much had all soulful dancefloor bases covered during the disco era. They were also the first to `eye cue' their 12" disco discs, giving DJs the track's BPM and info on the exact length of the various sections of the song - one of the earliest examples of a record company recognising how important the DJ was to become. By `79, and very much with the DJ in mind, 12"s such as Diana Ross' `The Boss' were being purposely intro'd with mix-friendly drum beats, something that's become par for the course these days for most dance tracks released. But, as this compilation demonstrates, those disco beats were already infiltrating the Motown sound as early as 1972. Universal.

Nice to have so many classics in one package. Whould never expect the US to allow this here. At least it's available for a few extra bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Memories!.......2006-08-25

I absolutely loved the CD, "Motown Disco". I was looking for the long version of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" and found this disco collection. My young nephews and nieces don't understand why the songs are so long when they hear them playing in my truck, but, it brings back wonderful memories of my teen years. Now, I've got to find a CD with "Doctor Love" and "Love Bug" and I'll be set for life!

5 out of 5 stars Carl Bean, Tata Vega, Thelma Houston, Ms. Ross 12"s = PRICELESS!.......2005-11-13

While the market is facing a severe glut of disco, 80s, 70s flashback compilations as labels scramble to cash-in on their catalogs, THIS compilation is really something special - and, of course, it's a UK IMPORT, not a U.S. domestic release, which is very revealing. Why is that MOTOWN itself based in AMERICA cannot fathom the musical and historical value of these amazing disco/funk/soul cuts? Why must it take a nation overseas to finally cull, collect, and preserve for posterity these tracks? That said, this compilation is absolutely BRILLIANT - featuring several songs that are hard to find on CD, including one of my favorite songs ever: CARL BEAN's gospel-infused, uplifting pro-gay anthem "BORN THIS WAY" - it was remixed in the 80s by Pettibone & Forrest for Next Plateau (I prefer that mix, actually) and smapled for Jaques Lu Cont/Pour Homme's Born This Way a few years back on Wall of Sound in France, but this is the glorious original mix, raising the roof - and one of the earliest examples of anyone having the guts to sing the word "GAY" much less in such a soul-stirring, positive light - mucho props for Motown and Bean, and where is Carl NOW? (I know he's a Rev. and used to ran an AIDS hospice, but so far hasn't recorded since?!) - Also on hand are key cuts by the amazing TATA VEGA ("Get It Up for Love" - a Larry Levan favorite - why doesn't Motown re-issue any of TATA's OOP CDs on Tamla - hello?!), THELMA HOUSTON, DIANA ROSS, MARVIN GAYE, TEENA MARIE, and many, many more - buy it now, so that everyone can savor, cherish, and respect these important disco traxx. Disco never died, it just changed names, i.e. house, garage, etc. Final note: look for WEST END's upcoming CD-reissue of Carl Bean's BORN THIS WAY this/next month, featuring the stunning 1984 REMIXES by SHEP PETTIBONE and BRUCE FORREST that appeared on the ultra-rare but cherished Next Plateau 12"!! -

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant compilation.......2005-09-25

Don't think that this is yet another disco compilation - this one is special. Motown rounds up some of its most popular disco/dance tracks from the 70's and early 80's including Diana Ross's "Love Hangover" and "The Boss"; Thelma Houston's euphoric "Don't Leave Me This Way"; Marvin Gaye's 11-minute epic, "Got to Give it Up", and Teena Marie's "Behind the Groove". It also features obscure classics such as Thelma Houston's "Saturday Evening, Sunday Morning" and Carl Bean's groundbreaking "I Was Born This Way", one of the first gay disco anthems, and in fact, one of the first gay anthems to even include the word "gay". There are also some early tracks from Rick James, making this a collection of classics and rarities.

What also sets this apart from other disco compilations is that Motown never fed into the cheesy aspects of disco (ie. Village People) so you won't find "Y.M.C.A" or "Disco Duck" here.

Motown may be better known for its classics from the 60's but in the 70's I think they became far more interesting. The music became edgier, and stars like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and even Diana Ross, strived for both artistic credibility and commercial success and frequently achieved both.

This compilation demonstrates that Motown could move with the times but they never lost their edge -- or their funk. A highly enjoyable collection

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Motown Disco Compilation!.......2005-08-21

MOTOWN DISCO finally pays tribute to Motown's contribution to the 70s disco movement. When it comes to disco, historians automatically think of TK or Casablanca as the ultimate disco labels while leaving out Motown. Some historians seem to forget that Motown was Billboard magazine's #1 disco label in 1974 and 1975.

Smash #1 pop hits "Love Hangover" (Diana Ross), "Got To Give It Up" (Marvin Gaye), "Keep On Truckin'" (Eddie Kendricks) and "Don't Leave Me This Way" (Thelma Houston) are here in their 12" version glory. However, the real treat is the rare cuts by such Motown disco acts as Tata Vega, The Dynamic Superiors, Finished Touch, Platinum Hook (with its take on the Funkadelc classic "Standing On The Verge Of Gettin' It On"), and Carl Bean ("I Was Born This Way", one of the first known gay pride disco anthems ever. Not bad for 1978).

Overall, this collection offers proof that Motown made great dancefloor stompers during the 70s, while retaining the soul that made the label special in the first place. Here's hoping there'll be a sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Disco Is the Last Thing I Would Call This Chick.......2007-04-13

I love this CD. All these years all I thought she had to offer was Pull Up to the Bumper. I play this CD all the time. Pull Up is probably my least favorite now. Guess that makes me weird for "getting it". I know my neighbors hate me but who gives a fcuk.

I thought Kelis and Andre 3000 were out there some cosmic trip. They're mere schoolkids still playing in the sandbox compared to Grace.

Makes me wonder how come she never hooked up with Prince or Rick James or Bootsy Collins during the late 70's/early 80's. But them again maybe Grace wasn't trying to be down with any particular camp or boxed into one sound. Too bad her imagery overshadowed the sheer magnitude of the songs had during their original releases. But I can definitely appreciate her contribution to the music industry now.

Would love to see a serious DVD collection of her music videos and live performances. That ish would definitely win a special Grammy.

2 out of 5 stars To Make a Long Story Short..........2007-04-10

This UK release is by far the most comprehensive Grace Jones compilation to date (along with the 3 disc Holland import "Ultimate Grace Jones", which includes the rarely included song "Inspiration"). This collection leaves much to be desired, but it does include some rare tracks.

THE GRACE JONES STORY consists of 28 songs on two discs (14 tracks each), from 1977-1993. Discs packaged in cardboard sleeves (no disc holders); packaging resembles a children's book about the same dimensions as a standard jewel case; attached to the inside is a 12-page booklet, situated between the two cardboard sleeves (discs removed from opening on top); running time for each disc just under 75 minutes. Booklet includes a pedestrian (and nearly void of punctuation) essay by Daryl Easlea, an assortment of photographs (of album covers, magazine photos, advertisements, etc.; most too small to be easily viewed), a hard-to-read partial timeline of Ms. Jones's life, and no detailed track information (publishing dates provided for several songs clearly have no correlation to the recording or release dates; musician personnel, producer credits, albums of origin, and chart information not provided, nor is there a discography). Sound quality is good.

The first 11 songs on disc one come from Grace Jones's disco albums recorded in the late `70s. They include "Don't Mess with the Messer" (credited to Blues songwriter/producer Willie Dixon, but with different lyrics, a different melody, and a disco beat, it bears no resemblance to the song recorded by Blues legend Koko Taylor), "Fame" (not the David Bowie song or the theme from the film-turned-television-series, rather an enjoyable disco song written by Jones herself), and "Saved" (not the quasi-Gospel song recorded by Rhythm & Blues singer LaVern Baker, rather a different quasi-Gospel song). The best songs here are "Sinning", "Fame", and "Do or Die".

Beginning with track 12 on disc one thru track 10 on disc two, the songs are from Jones's three albums recorded at Compass Point studios (1980's "Warm Leatherette", 1981's "Nightclubbing", 1982's "Living My Life"). But missing from these recordings are "Pars", "Breakdown", "Cry Now, Laugh Later", "Unlimited Capacity for Love", "Living My Life", and the until recently unreleased demo of "Ring of Fire". Also missing are well known recordings like "Slave to the Rhythm" and "Demolition Man".

The last four songs of disc two begin with her big hit "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)", from 1986's "Inside Story"; this is the first Grace Jones compilation this song appears on (no other songs from that album, such as "Party Girl" or "Scary But Fun", are included in this collection). Her last album was 1989's "Bulletproof Heart"; "Love on Top of Love (Killer Kiss)" and "Someone to Love" are from this album. "Sex Drive" is a house/dance recording released as a single in 1993.

The track listing is often mis-identified. Here is the correct track listing:
Disc 1
01. That's the Trouble
02. I Need a Man
03. La Vie En Rose
04. Send in the Clowns
05. What I Did For Love
06. Do or Die
07. Fame
08. Am I Ever Gonna Fall in Love in New York City
09. Don't Mess With the Messer
10. Sinning
11. Saved
12. Warm Leatherette
13. Love Is the Drug
14. The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game
Disc 2
01. Private Life
02. She's Lost Control
03. Pull Up to the Bumper
04. Walking in the Rain
05. Use Me
06. Nightclubbing
07. I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango)
08. My Jamaican Guy
09. The Apple Stretching
10. Nipple to the Bottle
11. I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)
12. Love on Top of Love
13. Someone to Love
14. Sex Drive

On the back cover, there is a very obvious error in the text color of the track listing for the first disc.

No compiler credit is given; it is notable that Daryl Easlea also wrote the essay for "Grace Jones: The Collection" [2004, Spectrum/Universal].

3 out of 5 stars They Missed AGAIN!!.......2006-05-27

Sorry, I can't endorse this latest Grace Jones collection because Universal failed to include enough material from the SUPER RARE 'Muse' & 'Fame' albums (BTW, I have both on a single disc!), 'Seven Day Weekend' (fr.'Boomerang' SDTK), 'Slave To The Rhythm' (which is one of Grace's BIGGEST HITS without question!!), and the rare 1978 B-Side to 'Do Or Die' titled 'Comme Un Oiseau Qui S'Envole' (which I'm lucky enough to have on CD!!!) would've been a nice track to include here!!

In closing, 'The Grace Jones Story' (VERY OVERPRICED BY THE WAY!!) was supposed to be the FIRST comprehensive collection / anthology for Grace Jones fans, but alas..the record company fu**** up again!! And they wonder why fans insist on making BETTER compilations at home ? Hmmm...NEXT!
Peace, SD
(of 'Chaka's World')

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Collection.......2006-04-04

Finally we have the "ultimate" Grace Jones collection. Previous collections suffered from edits and track omissions, but Universal has finally managed to compile all of the Divas greatest on two discs. The first disc opens with a collection of her disco days, from "Portfolio" to "Muse" all produced and envisioned by disco pioneer, Tom Moulton. Her disco years were stunning and she did some outstanding songs during 1977-1979. Her first album contained a medley of disco-fied Broadway tunes "What I Did for Love" from "A Chorus Line" and the classic "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music" by Sondheim. Another song was included in the original medley: "Tomorrow," from Annie, but it is not included on this compilation. Her second album saw Grace back at top of the dance charts with "Do or Die" and "Fame," the title of her second album, plus another stunning track included here: "Am I Ever Going to Fall in Love in New York City?"

Her last disco-based album came in 1979, "Muse", and although it failed to re-establish Grace as a disco queen, it was the best album of the three. Perhaps even her best album, period. Stunning tracks; with a twenty minute long medley spanning from "Sinning" to "Saved." Universal have chosen to omit the hit of the album: "On Your Knees" in favor for its b-side "Don't Mess With the Messer" a small gripe, but forgivable. We all know the stunning music she created with Sly & Robbie between the period of 1980-1982 and the first disc ends with a few tracks from the "Warm Leatherette" album from 1980. Stunning "with-it" or "ahead-of-their-time" tracks such as the obscure: "Warm Leatherette" the cunning "Love Is the Drug" and the soulful "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game."

Disc two opens with her stunning cover of "Private Life" a cutting rock track with strong reggae undertones. Also included on this compilation is the b-side: "She's Lost Control." Originally by Joy Division, Grace turns this song into something else to say the least. Of course the majority of disc two is dedicated to her "Nightclubbing" album as it was her most successful album. Again, led by Sly & Robbie who provided her with a strong musical base and of course all of the hits are included, from the jungle rhythms of "Pull Up to the Bumper" to the violent "Use Me" to the cha-cha rhythms of "I've Seen That Face Before" to the icy cool "Walking in the Rain." The last collaboration between Sly & Robbie and Grace came in 1982, this time a Grace co-wrote and wrote all of the songs except for Melvin Van Peebles "The Apple Stretching." The album managed to score Grace yet another hit with "Nipple to the Bottle" and the widely sampled "My Jamaican Guy".

Creative artist Jean Paul-Goude had a vision of how he thought Grace should be. He painted her and mythologized her through his work but eventually realized that it wasn't Grace that he had fallen for, but her image. Ladies and Gentlemen, miss Grace Jones. Trevor Horn produced the biographical "Slave to the Rhythm" in 1985 to huge success unfortunately it is not included on this compilation. The single "Slave to the Rhythm" is quite difficult to find, the version on the album is not the original single nor is the song included on "Island Life" but it can be found on "The Compass Point Sessions" album and Horn's "Produced by Trevor Horn" compilation. She left Island Records in 1986 and got signed to Manhattan Records and released "Inside Story" short after. The album spawned off one of her biggest hit singles (in America that is) called "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)" which is included here. Her last studio album to date came in 1989 and it also managed to spawn off at least one dance classic "Love on Top of Love" and the minor hit "Amado Mio." Grace took a huge break from music to concentrate on her acting career, in 1983 she got casted alongside Arnold in the action-adventure: "Conan the Destroyer" and alongside Roger in "James Bond: A View to a Kill" in 1985. In 1992 she appeared in Eddie Murphy's wacky comedy "Boomerang" and in 1993 she scored yet another #1 dance hit with "Sex Drive."

We never saw another album since then, but Grace left us with the occasional soundtrack appearance and movie participation. For once, Universal has managed to give us a rounded view of this crazy, but stunning, Divas career. It is nice to own all of her greatest hits on one album, and it's especially nice to finally own a couple of tracks from the rare album "Muse" and for some, the tracks from "Fame," but since I own the rare Australian pressing of "Fame" I'm more satisfied by owning "Sinning," "Saved," and "Don't Mess With the Messer" on compact disc.

5 out of 5 stars Big Music comes in Small Packages........2007-01-09

Are you ready for one of the most wonderful collection of soulful music ever..Let me say quite frankly that this is music that satisfies the soul however there is a catch, you must have a soul. Disregard any negative reviews from people who obviously don't have any real soul.

2 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer..."Shine on Through" is the one decent song, but Elton and pop disco don't work well together.

4 out of 5 stars Elton shows serious soul..........2004-11-05

Jimmy Wade's review was right on - this one is a hidden gem from Elton. Of the tracks on the EP, only "Mama Can't Buy You Love" went in the Top 40 at the time, though recently the reissued "Are You Ready For Love?" topped the charts in the US and England. What's most interesting about the disc is the range of material. As Jimmy notes, it's not really a "disco" album - just pure, good Philly Soul, most of the tracks done w/ the Spinners (I think they play on all the tracks, though they don't sing on all of them) and all produced by Thom Bell. The mixes of the songs originally included on the vinyl 3 song EP in 1979 are (as Jimmy points out) NOT the Elton John/Clive Franks mixes, but the original Bell mixes. The complete EJ/Clive Franks mixes can, however, be found as addl. tracks on the CD single for "The Last Song", and "Are You Ready For Love?" and "Three Way Love Affair" are on the recent single edition of "Are You Ready...?" Pick it up and give it a spin - it's a lot of fun and very well done. Check out "Country Love Song" and "Nice and Slow" - these would have been great singles at the time as well! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Amazon.com!.......2004-09-23

I would like to Thank Amamzon.com for sending me this materpiece. It is, in my opinion, one of his best albums. It does geta reputation of beinga disco album but listening closely there's only really a definite Gospel feel on every track. You can hear his voice progress from his young days into his latter day lower register voice through the course of this album. I like how even though it's mid-late seventies R&B there are other styles that can be heard in the mix. I like the strings, they give it a majectic feel. There is not that much synthesiser, except on the track three way loev affair. There is a definite disco feel to some of the songs, others are more like straight R&B. My favourite two songs are Three way love affair and Ncie and Slow.

5 out of 5 stars Elton John meets Philly Soul... how cool is that?.......2004-06-22

This should be one of the best-known and most beloved moments in Elton John's career - but it isn't. Two iconic sounds of the 70's combine and the result is rich, buttery ear candy - but it gets consistently glossed-over when people run down the handful of enduring pop music from the disco era. Elton makes his bid to be one of the great blue-eyed-soul singers of his time - and few even notice. Elton would quickly move on from here, but echoes of this benchmark can be heard in all that follows. A true forgotten classic in every sense.

I never thought this album got the props it deserved. One of Bootsy's funkiest !!! From "Shyne O Myte" to "The Funky Functioneer" every track is P-Funk, Un-Cut Funk....DA BOMB !!! Bootsy was way ahead of his time. The things this cat can do with a bass. I remember buying this album back in 1982 when it was released and off and on I've been playing it ever since. Eventhough I bought the cd, ain't nothing like watching that vinyl go round and round and listening to Casper's voice exploed thru those Cerwin Vegas in the crib. "Excon of Love" is the joint ! All of Booty's slow jams were. Just didn't get the credit they deserved. If you have this one...you are of the funk - if you don't have it....GET IT...and become one with the funk.

    5 out of 5 stars daaamn that's funky shhhh..........2003-05-17

got this on wax for a little last month.
this one rock's man! i wanted to use a track i heard and liked just after buying for a mix. so i got the record and skipped to find the "right" track(this is what i as a dj do quite a lot).
i just couldn't find it, they where all so ... good. i ended up listening to the complete thing a couple of times 5 out of 5 stars Bootsy's overall BADDEST album!!!.......2002-06-10

It's too hard to decide which Bootsy album is his best overall, but jam for jam, this one is Bootsy's BADDEST!! If this album was a movie, it would be a sci-fi/action-adventure/comedy blockbuster!! It blows you away, makes you laugh out loud, mellows out just long enough to let you catch your breath, and leaves you with a big smile on your face! It's no accident that a whopping 5 songs from this supposedly forgotten album are featured on Bootsy's anthology CD, "Glory B, Da Funk's On Me," and at least 3 other songs could have easily made the cut. Trust the fans on this one: true funkateers either have this album, or they will go to great lengths to get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars unknown forces took it away.......2001-03-29

the last great bootsy record from the 80's before casper dissapeared for 6 years, underrated, and forgotten, i forgot about this for a moment to until i heard low profile sample shyne-o-mite in 1989, i was like damn that's bootsy. and my favorite all time track ex con of love had bootsy survived longer in the 80's he would have gave prince and rick james a run for their money. the last great p-funk record until gansts rap saved the funk.

5 out of 5 stars The Doctor of Funk proclaims this album the #1 Funkateer.......2000-09-20

Back in the day, when I was a college DJ, I was known as the Doctor of Funk. Part of the reason was this album right here. This album (beginning to end) is by far the best Bootsy release ever! Picking a favorite song from this album is like trying to choose one entree from a buffet. One day it's one song, the next day is another song. I have the 45 from Take A Lickin'.... and I purchased two cassettes and an LP. I wore all of them out years ago. And with so many great P-funk albums out from Bootsy, Clinton, The Brides, Parliament, Parlet, Funkadelic and the others, if I could take one p-funk album with me on a deserted island, and it can not be a compilation or best of album, this would be the one. If you are a true old school funk fan, this is a MUST HAVE in your collection. Take this prescription from the Doctor of Funk. You're Gonna have to take your shoes off, and kick up your feels like the foot stranger.

      5 out of 5 stars a Happening collection.......2005-04-18

Evelyn "Champagne" King has a strong Voice&alot of these Jams still are Hitting. Her Range covered alot of territory. She hasn't gotten her due as a Artist to me. She was able to roll with the changes in music&still bring it Musically."Love come down" is still tight as is "Shame". the cool thing here is the full uncut versions which make it so cool.this is the best collection of Her Hits Material to date.

5 out of 5 stars YES...All the hard to find Good songs.......2005-04-01

I am so happy this came out. All the hard to find Best song from all of her albums, something like 7 albums she did for RCA. What i like best is most songs are the Album versions. The edit songs you can find on any of her best of CD. Out of Control, to shame,, all the best songs are on this CD. She evan has songs from the Album that came on in 1980 "Call ME" and that was not her best album. This is worth every cent and more.

5 out of 5 stars The very best ECK favorites album.......2005-03-30

I only heard of this album because I requested Amazon.com send me any word of new releases by Evelyn Champagne King. I am very frustated because the only time it pops onto the the Amazon.com website is when I reference it in a strict specific way. Otherwise it doesn't exist. It does not exist to the general public. I am writing this review partly to challenge this odd circumstance.

This is the album to get if you love Evelyn Chamnpagne King's music. It does not contain biographical notes or extended pictures, beyond what's on the covers of the three 3 CD's. Musically, however it has the more than you can ever expect, more than twice the songs as any of her other 'best of' albums, all the prior ones, plus three more of my personal favorites. These three, they probably were'nt 'hits' but I love them are "Don't It Feel Good", "Makin' Me So Proud" from the 'Face to Face' album and 'Make Up Your Mind', from her second album.

So if your old ECK albums are starting to wear out, buy this and record it into your computer for posterity.

There are a few of my favorites that are only in the old vinyl format, but I can't complain too much. This is a very broad sample. (okay. I will complain in a little way, it does not contain the one about 'God Almighty' in an early ablum or 'I'm Just Warming Up', or a couple of others, but it DOES have 42 songs).

I have one serious criticism. Only her RCA albums have been recorded into favorites albums, or reissued. She put out some beautiful songs under the EMI label. Some of these as good as her earlier music, such as her rendition of 'A Change is Gonna Come' and they are being lost. I will absolve RCA of blame, and put it all on EMI.
