2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

1 out of 5 stars Stephen Foster.......2007-05-13

I saw a program on OPB about him so I got this. But, I didn't like it and don't listen to it. It is now under my bed collecting dust.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific choral renditions.......2006-01-27

I own this CD and am especially fond of it for the solos by Thomas Pyle and Clayton Krehbiel, particularly the latter's singing of "I Want to Die Easy." All other soloists and choristers are equally superb, but those two gentlemen, sadly since deceased, were personal acquaintances and musical influences. If you don't have a taste for great choral arrangements, then pass, but you'll be missing out on something special. Enjoy it, you who adore the finest.

1 out of 5 stars Make the exquisite into the mundane.......2004-07-21

Oh, puleeze, this is the sappiest rendition of these gorgeous songs ever recorded, right up there with sing-a-long with Mitch Miller.

I always hate when songs that are meant to be sung intimately as solos or duets are done by 7,000 harmonized voices.

I recommend this recording only to be listened to in a nice comfortable elevator

5 out of 5 stars Great Drinking Music!.......2002-07-20

This CD Kicks ...! BR>The trombone riff in "Camptown Races" is incredible. The screaming axe in "Oh! Susanna" is mind-blowing. The fantastic jamming on this CD reminds me of HMTT. This CD is one monster hit after another. "Steal Away To Jesus", is a real kicker, although not quite as good as "Will You F'n Give Me Jesus".......

Just sit back, pop a cold one, maybe a whiskey shooter , pop this
baby on the victrolla and enjoy.......

Here's to ya Hawks...........

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2000-08-09

This is one of the best recordings of historic American music that I have heard, along with Joel Cohen's "Liberty Tree." The arrangements and interpretations of the songs are very beautiful. Some of the banjos are cheesy, but it is much much better than every other Foster recordings that I have heard. The first two-thirds of this disc is a fascinating cram course in concert music around the time of World War I. The programmer has put together some fascinating juxtapositions--for example, Strauss's Rosenkavalier leads almost seamlessly into Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, and Schoenberg sounds out of context with everybody (including Berg). The selections are all short, and performance quality runs from great to mediocre, but this is still a thought-provoking educational experience, even though Bartók and Ives are conspicuously missing. The popular selections are less interesting, often campy, and although vintage recordings are used, they aren't always the right vintage. And someone missed a point by separating Copland's jazzy "Music for the Theatre" from Louis Armstrong, who could have followed immediately. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Music and the Great War.......2007-05-14

This is a fascinating compendium of popular and classical music from the World War One period. It evokes all the turmoil, anguish, and also humor, of the age, and is a vital CD to own if you have an interest in the Great War and the music it inspired or was inspired by.

5 out of 5 stars How a Century Has Change Our Perception of War.......2005-10-29

War. Tough subject these days - tough subject since the beginning of time. Yet Americans tend to mend wounds and gradually allow the atrocities of yesteryear to fade into coated cases that signal more memories of 'how things used to be' rather than learning from the tragedies with which war has scarred the planet. National Public Radio issued this excellent memoir at the turn of the millennium and one wonders if it now has the same response that greeted it in 1999.

Linda Kobler reconstituted this mix of classical and popular music with a keen sense of history. The CD is twice divided (in both the classical and the popular music) into 'Before the War' 1901 - 1917, 'During the War' 1917 - 1922, and 'After the War' 1922 - 1928. In the first era are the works of Elgar ('Pomp and Circumstance'), Strauss (a waltz from 'Der Rosenkavalier'), Mahler (excerpt from 'Das Lied von der Erde'), and Debussy ('La Mer') joining the songs 'Shine On Harvest Moon' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band'. The War period is represented by Prokofiev's 'Symphony No. 1', Stravinsky's 'L'histoire du soldat', and Ravel's 'Le tombeau de Couperin' in tandem with 'Over There'. After the war include Stravinsky ('Pulcinella Suite'), Schoenberg (Waltz from 'Five Piano Pieces'), Berg (excerpt from 'Wozzeck') and Copland ('Music from the Theatre') with popular songs 'How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm', 'The Man I Love', and 'West End Blues'.

The excerpts selected for this survey are exceptionally good: orchestras include NY Phil, LA Phil, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony, and the Columbia Symphony under such batons a Ormandy, Bernstein, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Schippers and Stravinsky; soloists include Glen Gould, Robert Casadesus, Lili Chookaskian, Louis Armstrong, et al. The sonics are very fine and the performances are each from significant full recordings remaining in the catalogue.

The booklet accompanying this concert of memories is written by Linda Kobler who uses each selection as a pivotal point in the atmosphere of the globe that accompanied the Great War: it is very well written and informative. This is one of those recorded collections that goes far beyond an accumulation of bits and pieces and instead gives food for thought about how our political and social actions intertwine with the arts in a prophetic way. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording!.......1999-03-13

(It was called The "Great" War, because nobody knew about WWII at the time and it was the biggest war anyone had ever seen.)

I think this CD may be a bit choppy to "easy" listeners, but for anyone who has a sincere interest in delving into the musical senses of earlier generations it's VERY good! I recommend the entire NPR Milestones of the Millennium series to such aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars Good music, bad title.......1999-02-11

Since when is war great? Life in the trenches waiting for the germans to attack you worrying about whether mustard gas is gonna loft your way isn't exactly like sipping chablis.

Possessed of a creative spirit as restless as his vaunted socio-spiritual conscience, Canadian singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn took nearly four years to deliver this, his first album of the new millennium. Judging from the rich, challenging musical/topical tapestry that's resulted, it was time well spent. Cockburn's career has been a long (this marks his 27th release) and varied one, wending its way from Christian-oriented folk to the angry agit-prop pop of "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" and beyond, much of it seasoned with musical influences that have ranged from jazz to world-beat. But seldom has Cockburn woven those disparate inspirations into a collection as rewarding as this one. With the eye for detail--and nose for trouble--of a grizzled foreign correspondent, the musician is as unafraid to deliver spoken-word dispatches from the front ("Postcards From Cambodia," the title track's haunting litany of back-page horrors) as he is to wrap the greed-head harangue " Trickle Down" in ironic, percolating jazz or let his voice soar with a rare, naked expressiveness on the beautiful "Everywhere Dance." Sam Phillips and Emmylou Harris add sparkling harmonies to "Tried and Tested" and the hypnotic, cautionary "All Our Dark Tomorrows, respectively, while Cockburn gracefully closes the compelling collection out with gentle reminders ("Don't Forget About Delight," "Messenger Wind") about the importance of human connections both great and small. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars For those who don't like surprises and change, look elsewhere.......2006-08-20

If you want to keep hearing a million variations of Rocket Launcher, you are stuck on Bruce for not being 'Christian' enough, his politics annoy you, you don't like to be surprised or even challenged, then look elsewhere. Don't buy Bruce Cockburn's albums, don't listen to his music, and please don't bash him for being who he is.

I like it that he surprises me with all his changes. Everytime I unwrap one of his CDs and tune in, I get something I didn't expect. Bruce is truly original, and he has had staying power through the last three decades because he keeps changing. He hasn't become the peddler of a stale product. And for those who don't like his 'anger', well anger is one of many human emotions. There's a lot to be angry about and Bruce has traveled the world; he's seen it. If you anger-aversive listeners listen a little deeper you will also find doubt, gentleness and truth. And lots of love. Bruce Cockburn is amazing. He is able to take tremendous anger, pain and suffering and transform it into love songs about life. What more can you ask for?

So forgive him if in his musical and personal exploration he doesn't always hit the highest notes, always creating masterpieces. He does it enough that it keeps me coming back for more. I thought "Charity of Night" couldn't be topped. But Bruce did something very different in "You've Never Seen Everything". It's appropriate to the time he wrote the songs. Look at the dates. It's still appropriate as are all his songs. I love Bruce Cockburn's music and admire his courage as a musician. If you want something simple, listen to the radio.

1 out of 5 stars Another "I Hate George Bush" Song by Bruce.......2006-03-27

Bruce is angry. But you knew that. It's no surprise - he's always angry lately. Here's a man with a mastery of words who can't get through an album or a concert without resorting to profanity. Memo to Bruce: SHUT UP. We understand that you don't like George Bush. Do we have to hear about it every album and every concert? Not only does it alienate many of your fans, but it's bad art. We're tired of it. Let it go. Take your own advice at kick at the darkness in yourself. Put that in your heart.

3 out of 5 stars A Low Point For Bruce.......2005-10-17

Unfortunately this is probably Bruce's worst album since he hit his stride in about 1974. But it's still not bad. There has never been a Bruce album that didn't have at least 2 or 3 songs that seriously moved me. And I can't say that about too many of my other favorite artists. Bruce misses the mark here too many times; there are a few songs here (like Trickle Down) which are particularly cringeworthy. The 3 or 4 very good songs are worth the price of admission. If you've never bought a Bruce album before you don't want to start here - there are real treasures in his earlier work.

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2005-08-15

Like my friend who wrote before me, I think this album reveals a stale spirit for Mr. Cockburn. I also love most of his previous albums (I own all except greatest hits and live albums), and think he is one of the better song writers of the last 30 years. However, this latest record... really mediocre. It is almost like he is replacing intelligent and interesting songwriting with techno-crap. His melodies are bland and unengaging, lyrics are recycled (like the guy before me said), and he just seems old and bitter. Obviously he can write whatever he wants, but he can't expect that by writing hatred-fueled songs he is going to get something that sounds good. It seems that he has become one of those "tolerant" types who are only tolerant of the tolerant. Unhealthy. I hope he wises up and gains new perspective for his own sake, and for the sake of his fans. I feel he is poisoning people with his latest album. Like I said, he can say what he wants, but that doesn n't mean what he says will be quality. It is interesting that you can HEAR the bitterness in the music itself.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-01-26

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Bruce Cockburn fan and this CD has a few great songs on it, but unless you actualy like his long, monotonous dialogues you will be disappointed too. I'm willing to put up with a few of these but they dominate this effort in my opinion....

Brilliant!,what a superb album ,this woman is just fantastic.her voice is as sensational as her music,Night on ontake mountain,Wow what a beautiful track,A beautiful album from a one very talented musician .I can highly recommend this to any lover of instrumental music,or anyone who enjoys a brilliant female vocalist too.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2002-11-04

I bought this cd used hoping to get one or two tracks from it for a compilation I was trying to put together of mellow female musician/singers. What I didn't expect was to be so blown away by this virtually unknown sorceress of song. An amazingly pure, ethereal voice, combined with positively magical violin rifts, (an instrument I'm usually quite bored with), conspires to take you away to places you only find in dreams. I ended up using only two artists' music for this compilation, with about 8 incredible tracks from "IMAGO" and 8 tracks from another highly recommended artist, CAROLINE LAVELLE. I have gifted this compilation to a number of my friends, and they have all loved it! I'm very excited about hearing everything else she has done. I can't recommend this cd enough. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Performance.......2001-06-05

This CD is absolutely fabulous! The closest comparison I could make would be to Dido. However, Lorenza has greater depth in her voice. The musical backup is better with greater depth too. Some of the pieces are mostly instrumental.

4 out of 5 stars A unique, engaging musical experience.......1998-09-20

Haunting violin, with gypsy, Middle Eastern, classical as well as modern influences. Lorenza Ponce has a beautiful voice, and the music just carries you away into faraway lands and dreams. I'm eagerly awaiting her next work!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifiul, rare combination of violin and vocals.......1998-08-07

Lorenza plays a spine-tingling violin while singing with strength and beauty. Combine these performing talents with 11 terrific original compositions and you can't miss. The pace of the music reminds me of Keiko Matsui, mostly faster and upbeat, but with the occasional slower piece, more mysterious and thought provoking. The opening number, Summer, will give you a good idea of the whole CD. I bought Imago after only a minute or two at a listening station.

3 out of 5 stars Great (I suppose) if you already know the words.......2003-03-13

For me, the voices were faint relative to the musical instruments. It was difficult to hear them. Yet, the language was so stylized that, even when heard, understanding the words was tedious and exasperating. Most mannerisms of the stage originated in purposeful behavior, I feel sure, but they detract from the performance when overindulged. I think I'd prefer a studio recording in which the singers sang with unpretentious style right into a microphone, and the audio engineer adjusted tone and timbre. I imagine elitists cluck-clucking about the purity of music without microphones. In my opinion, if you're making a CD, then you've sinned already, so why not go all the way and make a great CD? If my dear reader remains with me at this stage of my rant, I say the performance at the opera house may be mahvelous and pristine, but a CD and an opera house are different media, and performers should optimize for the medium. However, this recording of Pinafore is the best I've found of the sad available lot. I'd rate it 2 stars if it weren't superlative.

5 out of 5 stars ... He's hardly ever sick at sea ...........2001-07-31

I must admit, I only bought the opera because I was rather amused by Sideshow Bob's rendition of the HMS Pinafore (Cape Feare, The Simpsons). Since then, I've bought (and enjoyed) the Mikado, planning to get the Pirates of Penzance soon. This opera is both hilarious and beautiful, mainly thanks to a great performance by the D'Oyly Carte opera company. If you're at all interested in classical music and the opera (which you should be), this is something that everyone should have.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding recording - average selection.......2001-06-14

Nothing more needs to be said about this superb D'Oyly Carte Pinafore, which won a well-dseerved Rosette from the Penguin Guide. Yet, in this highlights disc, I find that despite containing most of the major scenes, I dearly wish that Decca had chosen the excerpts a little more carefully. The lack of the entire "Carefully on tiptoe stealing" sequence seems to be an extremely serious minus in my book, particularly when it presents a sharp twist in the story. In addition, I also find that the inclusion of the entire "Over the bright blue sea" sequence is a little too - too redundent because the entrance of Sir Joseph is more important. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful disc of Pinafore excerpts. It presents a generous selection of excerpts that offers a good playing time without affecting sales of the complete set, and it also is enough to make one feel contented for a long time before purchasing the complete recording.

4 out of 5 stars A generous selection!.......2001-01-05

With so much of the recording offered as highlights it would have been better to purchase the full operetta. This recording dates from 1960 and is superalative in every respect. John Reed, Jean Hindmarsh, Thomas Round together with the late Donald Adams are reasons enough to acquire this version. The only missing quality is the dialogue. Never was the libretti of Gilbert ever spoken with more relish for the language and with such finesse. If you decide upon further investigation I urge you to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-04-22

I must confess I am unfamiliar with Copland's "The Tender Land" except for this reissue, which I find to be absolutely magnificent. I realize this is a truncated performance, eliminating what I assume to be a fair amount of spoken dialogue. But I don't care. What is presented here is simply one of the finest American compositions - forget American - one of the finest compositions of the 20th century. Period.

The recording of Copland's The Tender Land is alone worth getting this disc. The rest of the vocal works are just a bonus, a very good bonus! Copland directs a definitive account of his opera, and in this compressed version leaves out all the spoken parts of the full length opera, no doubt depriving us of a lot of good music but on the other hand giving listeners a very concise version that is even stronger musically (although dramatically a little lacking in logic because of the missing parts - for example without knowing of the confrontation during the party scene you would find the boys' departure the next morning puzzling, and the CD notes does not elaborate on the plot, which is about the only negative thing you can say about this set). Listening to the opera in this abridged version gives you the feeling of one hit after another, there is not a single weak point in the score and Copland has a gift for word-setting that can turn clumsy texts such as "girls come and go, some are good, some are not so good" into goosebumps stuff (a lovely dedication to Laurie sung by Grandpa). Other high points include the stunning transformation of the traditional Walls of Zion into the quartet piece The Promise Of Living and a rollicking Party Scene, which contains the best in Copland's clever orchestration and rythmic vitality - it seems all of the composers best traits have all come together in this work. Martin's Act 2 Song 'Laurie...You Know, Laurie' is a rare gem or an aria and beautifully sung. Other hidden gems include the comical 'We've Been North'. The cast is impeccable and the entire performance is flawless. Add to that one of those scores that simply win you over from start to finish, and you can't but fall in love with this music. I once thought that nothing could better Appalachian Spring but that was before I discovered this neglected work.

5 out of 5 stars Copland's vocal work.......2002-08-08

And so on this third set of the celebration of Aaron Copland's music, all attention is on his vocal work including the opera, "The Tender Land".

I can't completely explain why I give this five stars after giving the first two sets four stars each. This is just the way the opera, in particular, strikes me. I'm no great opera fan, and to my knowledge, America just has not yet proved itself in the operatic field although it's tried. It will take time, but I do see Copland's work as someday being considered the best example of American opera. This is all subjective opinion, obviously, and I'm sure there are those more knowledgeable who will disagree. So be it.

All in all, these three sets will give you a complete overview of one of America's most important composers.
