4 out of 5 stars Celtic Frost - 'To Mega Therion' (Sanctuary).......2007-02-21

Originally released in 1985, this was the band's follow-up to their head-banging debut 'Morbid Tales' (see my review) and about as intense. Tunes I liked best were "Jewel Throne", the kick-in-the-BE-hind "Eternal Summer", "Circle Of Tyrants" and the hyperactive "Necromantical Screams". Basically, just more old school prime Swiss death metal to torment you neighbors with. Turn this baby to '10' ! The only way to go.

3 out of 5 stars Over-Rated Celtic Frost Album.......2006-12-18

To Mega Therion is one of those albums that I want to really like, but I just can't. Many of my favorite artists list them as an influence so I found that it is only fair that I check out their music. Most fans say that this is their best. When I first listened to this album I absolutely hated it. It did nothing for me. Thankfully I gave it a few more tries and found many of the songs to be quite listenable. However, that still doesn't change the fact that I find this album to be quite over-rated. If you want to get into Celtic Frost, start with Into The Pandemonium. Listen to To Mega Therion only after you have listened to that album first.

Favorite Tracks: Circle Of The Tyrants, Fainted Eyes

5 out of 5 stars one of the best metal albums period!.......2006-11-28

To Mega Therion (aka The Big Bang) is an amazing metal thuderhorse. Cletic Frost's best album. If you like thrash, black metal or music in general get this album!

5 out of 5 stars Celtic Frost-Innovators of Death Metal.......2006-08-09

Celtic Frost is a huge influence on most death metal bands today. From Anthrax to Dave Grohl they have been cited as "gods of metal", ushers of black (in the genre of Venom) and death metal. I fisrt heard these guys back in the early 90's, a little late, and after their prime. My fisrt exposure was into the pandemonium, nice start, with a few odd twists. Cold Lake was my next view, and I thought, where are these guys going, and are they supposed to be Metal? Then I heard this album...THIS IS CELTIC FROST. This is what I was told in Legend about.

Born from Hellhammer member Thomas "Warrior" Fischer, Martin Ain, and Stephen Priestly. They first debuted some material on the "Death Metal" compilation for Noise records, and soon released Morbid Tales in 1984. From their debut album Morbid Tales, this was the second album (1985 release) and an awsome follow up that set the standards high for this up and coming band from Swiss/German origins.

From the first song Innocense and Wrath set up a longstading good/evil play that Frost used for many of their albums. Other highlights include Eternal Summer, The Usurper, and Circle of the Tyrants.

If you are a metal fan and have not bought any Frost before, this is a good second choice album. Morbid Tales is the top pick, but you will not be disapointed with this one either.

It is good to see that they are still kicking and alive today, check out their new album Monotheist as well.

5 out of 5 stars THEE death metal album of the 80's.......2006-07-29

This album ushered in the NEW, more cohesive Celtic Frost sound (circa 1985). Nearly gone are the fast, hard-core influenced songs like "Into the Crypts of Rays" and "Morbid Tales." After the 'Emperor's Return' recording sessions, the band briefly toured, lost their bass player Martin Ain, and headed back into the studio to record the DARKEST, most GOTHIC, EVIL, SLOW-PACED deat metal album ever put on wax. Every song on this disc is terrific. The sound is still ahead of it's time, and it sounds like TG Warrior is playing 8 guitars at once. Mixed into the album are three tracks from the "Tragic Serenades" recording sessions ('86), where Martin Ain joins back up with the band and they re-do a few of the songs.

The ONLY negative I can say about the CD is that Ain only plays bass on the 'Tragic Serenades' tracks: "The Usurper," "Jewel Throne" and "Return to The Eve." He is such an important part of the band--lyrically and musically. In fact, this is the only CF album I would advise buying that he doesn't play on.

Highlights? ALL OF THEM! To point at a few stand outs though: "The Usurper" (they used to open with this song in concert back in the late 80's...probably their best song), "Circle of the Tyrants" (another CF classic), "Eternal Summer," "Necromantical Screams" (which made the set list on their current 06-07 tour) and of course "Jewel Throne."

Taking the terror a step further, Frost has included a couple of chilling, evil instrumentals again, but also they are starting to incorporate string orchestra instruments, tympanies and female backing vocals, all of which are gothic influences, and all of which make the songs that much scarier. It's not contrived, or "just for show," like King Diamond. It's very integral, and the lyrics prove they are intellegent and well researched. They take this all to a new level on their next album, "Into the Pandemonium," which in my opinion is the best metal album of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Mega Movie Mix!.......2006-06-25

1-Why Not (ReMix)- I like the remix better than the original, it's fun. (8/10)

2-Can't Help Falling In Love- I made up a tap dance to this song, very fun and bouncy. (10/10) -My favorite song on the CD

3-Dig It-I'm not a big fan of this song. It's not on "repeat" but I don't NORMALLY skip over it (7/10)

4-Drama Queen(That Girl)- I think this song is just plain weird. (6/10)

5-Grazing in the Grass- This was my cousin's dance recital song last year. It's fun, it's peppy, but it's by Raven. (8/10)

6-Happy Together- I don't know. Definetly not the worst, definetly not the best. (7/10)

7-The Tide is High- My dad absouletly loves the song. I used to to, but it got boring after a while. (8/10)

8-Ciderella- Let me just say I hate the Cheetah Girls. They were fine when I was eight, but I'm not eight anymore! (5/10)

9-Supergirl-This song is okay, easy to sing along to, but definetly not my favorite. (6/10)

10-Beauty and The Beast-I absolutly LOVE the remix of this song!! Made up a dance to it, even! (10/10)

11-Ultimate-Uggh, another Lindsay song?? Fun to dance to but way old. (6/10)

12-Keepin' It Real-It's allright. Only heard it a couple of times. (6/10)

13-Superstition- All I can say is I am not a fan of Raven. (5/10)

14)Welcome- I only heard this a couple times but the times I did I liked it! (7/10)

15-Miricles Happen-A classic for Disney mixes, pretty good. Fun to dance to. (9/10

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Mix.......2006-04-23

I thought, overall this mix was great, I would rate it 4 1/2 if I could:

1-Why Not (McMix)- I like the remix better than the original, you can't really tell it's Hilary Duff, and that's what I like about it (8/10)

2-Can't Help Falling In Love-Very pop, fluffy song. Something you might get up and choreograph a dance to at a sleepover (10/10) -My favorite song on the CD

3-Dig It-I'm not a big fan of the whole "rap" thing. It's not on "repeat" but I don't NORMALLY skip over it (7/10)

4-Drama Queen(That Girl)-I absolutly HATE Lindsay Lohan, she has an awful voice, and the pop, fluff she does creeps me out, but I really liked this song by her (10/10)

5-Grazing in the Grass-I'm not a big fan of Raven, she sings too much R&B for me, I didn't particularly like this song, they should have picked a guy to sing this song. It suites it more. (5/10)

6-Happy Together-I'm a HUGE fan of Simple Plan, but this song didn't jump out at me, it was really rocked and all, but I think it sounded more like Green Day, than Simple Plan, it was really repetitive also (6/10)

7-The Tide is High-In The Lizzie Mcguire Movie, they use the version by Blondie, but, Atomic Kitten did a GREAT remix of it! Very poppish, but a great song to sing along with the radio (8/10)

8-Ciderella-The fact that Raven was in Cheetah Girls made me dislike all the songs the Cheetah Girls sing. I think the whole CHEETAH GIRLS thing is much to over rated (4/10)

9-Supergirl-I'm supergirl and I'm here to save the world..bla bla bla...I get tired of all the GIRL POWER songs..(2/10)

10-Beauty and The Beast-I absolutly LOVE the remix of this song!! Jump5 does a wonderful job with remixes! I loved the song in the movie and I loved the way Jump5 sings it, not too much of a change, but enough to notice! LOVE it!! (10/10)

11-Ultimate-Uggh, another Lindsay song?? I hated this song!! She has no musical ability whatsoever!! (2/10)

12-Keepin' It Real-I didn't like this song first, because I don't really like rap, but once you know the lyrics, it gets stuck in your head! It was deffinantly a song I would put on my iPod (9/10)

13-Superstition-Raven+Remixes=terrible--need I say more? (1/10)-my least favorite song of the whole CD

14)Welcome-Another remix by Jump5!! I love it!! Very poppy and "hip" but stuck to the original melody! (9/10)

15-Miricles Happen-A classic for Disney mixes, love it! (10/10)

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, But Lif Can Do Better.......2006-10-09

Mr. Lif might just be my favorite rapper in the game right now. There aren't many, if any, MCs with lyrics as thought provoking or as geniunely interesting as Mr. Lif. His EP 'Emergency Rations' and first LP 'I Phantom' are both easily 9-10/10 albums, which obviously creates very high expectations for any Lif release. While 'Mo'Mega' is a great album, and would be considered an extraordinary release from most other artists, it doesn't succeed in improving upon, or matching, Lif's prior albums.

The production on 'Mo'Mega' is largely handled by Def Jux founder El-P, who has also provided a good amount of production for Lif in the past. El-P's production style is pretty unorthodox, and many hip hop fans find his production just too "out there". While his production here is a bit more "normal" than what you might expect from him, people who aren't fans of El-Producto might be turned off by the production here. The 3 tracks that aren't produced by El-P have somewhat more conventional production, and they're handled by Edan (Murs Iz My Manager), Nick Toth (For You) and Mr. Lif himself (Washtup!). Overall, I feel that the production is great, although not as good as the production on Lif's past material.

Lyrically, Lif excells as always. Subject matter is great, flow is on point, and Lif executes extremely well. But once again, as shown by past material, Lif can do better. On I Phantom, for example, Lif showed his storytelling ability as well as numerous concept songs (considering it was a concept album). Lif strays away from storytelling and concept songs on 'Mo'Mega', which is pretty disapointing considering how great they were on I Phantom.

Overall, this really is a great album, and by far one of the best of 2006. But if you're a Lif fan lookings for another 'I Phantom', you might be disapointed on the first listen. But it definately grows on you.

Top 5 Songs (In Order):

1. Murs Iz My Manager (Featuring Murs) - Murs (another one of my favorite rappers) and Lif show great chemistry on this track, going back and forth over maybe the best beat on the album.

2. Brothaz - Sounds like a track straight off of 'Emergency Rations'; politically charged, and extremely dope.

3. For You - Great beat provided by Nick Toth (never heard of him before), and shows a more personal side of Lif (along with 'Looking In...') that was rarely seen on prior albums.

4. The Fries - 2 dope beats from El-P, accompanied with social commentary on fast food and other topics make this a definate standout.

5. Take, Hold, Fire (Featuring Aesop Rock & El-P) - Great overall track featuring 2 nice verses from labelmates Aesop Rock & El-P.

Worst Track:

Long Distance - Not a bad track, but not as good lyrically, nor beat-wise as the rest of the album. Just overall the least enjoyable track.

Lyrics/Substance/Subject Matter - 9/10
Flow/Delivery - 8.5/10
Production - 8/10
Overall Feel - 8/10

Guest Apperances - Aesop Rock, El-P, Murs, Akrobatik & Blueprint - 9.5/10 - Every one of the guests makes a memorable apperance. Definately a high point of the album.
Overall Rating - 8.5/10 - Pick this up if youre a fan of political hip hop that makes you think...but if you haven't heard any Mr. Lif before, you might want to pick up 'Emergency Rations' or 'I Phantom' first.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrically Incredible.......2006-08-05

Mr Lif is a genius, i love this cd, it is so much better than the stuff you hear on the radio these days, i hope people continue to support him, he is very much deserving of his accomplishments. I reccommend adding this cd to anyones collection, you will be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Lif is a Genius.......2006-08-05

This Album is summed up when I state that Mr. Lif is a "genius" Not only is this album worth getting, but its worth keeping in your Cd-player for weeks.

One thing to be aware of is that the CD does not have an immediate appeal like "Emergency Rations" does. Tracks like "Murs is my manager" will but all else will take time. Eventually after listening to the lyrics and adapting to Lif's classic yet newer style portrayed, the music will engulf you.

Songs that are personally my favorite (even though I pretty much like them all) are "Brothas," "Fries," "For You," "Murs is my Manager," "Looking in," and my recent favorite has been "Mo Mega." Not only does Lif shine, Blueprint and Akrobatik are at the top of their game. Buy this album and support a true lyrical genius.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing out of Boston since Black Dialogue.......2006-07-23

This is my favorite Lif album thus far. There are a lot of reasons. First off this is the best production I've heard by El-P, which is saying a lot considering I have a large Def Jux collection. The only thing I don't like about the beats is that occasionaly Lif's voice will just blend right in, and you will get caught up in the beat and completely miss the lyrics. The lyrics are what make Lif great. He's intelligent, politically-savvy, but most of all he does it without sounding boring or overly angry at the president. Songs like "The Fries" are what make this album my favorite by Lif. He can raise a very good point while also making the song laughable. There's nothing really bad to say about this album, I like his choice in collaborations, choosing old Perceptionist Akrobatik and fellow Jukies Aes Rock and Murs on his three (ft.) songs. The best track on the CD is probably Take! Hold! Fire!, and it's not just for Aes, the lyrics in this song are killer, and if you have any bass where you're listenin you'll be feelin it too. It's ill. Whole CD is ill. Five mics.

5 out of 5 stars A little different this time around........2006-06-23

Mr Lif finally comes through with his second LP (not counting Emergency Rations and Enters the Colossus) and man was it worth the wait.

At first when I put on this CD about a week ago I definately had my doubts but, as with every Lif release, it takes a few spins to totally appreciate it. I even disliked I Phantom at first but it soon grew into one of my favorite Hip-hop albums.

This one has the most layered, intricate production of any Lif album so far. Props to El-p for handling most of the duties. Lif's lyrics are a little more hard to discern than with previous efforts but the CD booklet has the lyrics printed to help you along.

Upon further understanding of the lyrics you will find the same topics covered as in I Phantom and a few new ones, but not in a chronological concept sort of way. This is layed out more like a traditional Hip-hop album. It's not as serious of an album as Emergency Rations or I Phantom. In typical Lif fashion his words seem to weave yarns that very few MC's can accomplish. When combined with the different beats, you have one rewarding listen.

It is a refreshing listen from Lif for the fact that it's different than anything else out there right now (and better) and different than anything he's done before. If your a fan of good Hip-hop or Mr. Lif pick this up RIGHT NOW!

4 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction to a great band!.......2006-03-20

This 3 disc collection features the first 2 Sixpence albums, The Fatherless and the Widow and This Beautiful Mess, and their Tickets for a Prayer Wheel EP disc.

The Good~ All the original material is included, featuring great songs such as 'Circle of Error', 'Thought Menagerie', and 'Alisha's First Steps'. This Beautiful Mess was the best of the three hands down!

The Bad~ The production quality is a way sub-par when compared to Sixpence's more recent albums. The volume of these songs varies considerably, and often times her voice is completely drowned out by the music so you can't understand the lyrics. The music is often fuzzy also. It should have been remastered or something bfore it was released.

The Ugly~ The packaging should have been better designed. The ugly lavender and gold decor just doesnt seem like it would be an eye catcher and sell the product very well. Also, some of the tracks on the Tickets for a Prayer Wheel were pretty terrible. I'm talking about the over the top instrumental 'Solomon the Mystic' and the remix (why?) of 'Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death'

So, buy this if you're a fan of Sixpence, and you don't have the first albums. Or if you're a fan of 'Kiss Me' and you want to hear what they sounded like before they became famous. I thought it was a worthy purchase, despite it's quirks. It's a good value if you think about it!

5 out of 5 stars must-have popcraft........2004-05-10

There is a "City on a Hill" in pop music occupied by a few very special bands. This three disc collection is a great way to explore one of them. Most people at least know the band's mega hit "Kiss Me", which you probably either love or hate, but if you appreciate the Hardcore Pure Pop brilliance of that song you will want to hear this, because the band's early work shares that goodness (their later stuff too!). Basically, the defining features of this band, and the reasons for their pop mightiness, are Leigh Nash's lilting and sweet voice (her voice seemed to get higher, more child-like and elfin, as the band went on), and Slocum's brilliant pop guitars (and if ever you sought the secret to mastering pop guitars, I think it is to be found in SNtR's _This Beautiful Mess_). From there, all the pieces for the natural order of good songcraft fall into place. This early music is quite a bit less produced and dare I say "indie"-sounding than _Divine DIscontent_, but the production is still nice and snappy.

The real treasure here is _This Beautiful Mess_. This album has by far the greatest pop guitars I have ever heard. Matt Slocum is an unrivaled master of his craft. The entire album is decked in reams and reams of sparkly, yummy dual guitar pop goodness. "Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death", "Within a Room Somewhere", "Thought Menagerie", "Drifting"...all of these songs feature some of the most lovable guitar playing ever. At the same time, there are a few tracks where the band sounds darker and more distorted, like on the opener "Angeltread", with contemplative, starry guitar chords on the verse that cave in to a grinding, distorted chorus, and a big feedback-heavy solo section. Kinda surprising. This album also has an extremely tight pop rhythm section, with bass playing that is often dexterously, addictively dynamic rather than just following the root note.

_Fatherless and the Widow_ is also excellent, although they can be rather cloying when they get really sentimental (the end of the title track, for instance). Songs like "Fields of Flowers" and the brilliant "An Apology" give hints at the pop guitar greatness Slocum would achieve on the next album.

The _Tickets for a Prayer Wheel_ EP is pretty good, with different mixes of some songs, some non-album tracks, and covers. The techno mixes are god-awful and you should probably never listen to them (what was done to "Love, Salvation, The Fear of Death" makes me want to cry). There are a few instrumental pieces that are like little instrumental pop lullabies (great guitars, of course).

Now, the packaging for this Mega 3 Collection is pretty lame. A big ugly CD case with no information except for song titles and song publishing info is all you get. Nonetheless, it's a great deal. For the price of one album you get one of the best pop albums ever, an excellent pop album, and a few other good tracks on another cd. I'd say that's pretty good. Highly recommended, and hopefully the value is a good incentive because this music is quite delicious and you may like it.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Buy.......2003-09-15

This really is a good buy. I mean...you get The Fatherless and the Widow, This Beautiful Mess, and Tickets for a Prayer Wheel, all for 15 dollars or so...or whatever. And though the CD's themselves look generic (as does the cover), the quality of the songs (sound-wise and everything) seemed great to me. I was glad to be able to listen to the older Sixpence songs. Now I have all 5 of their albums...and it's very fun and interesting to listen to how they've grown over the years, how each album has a certain atmosphere. If you are a devoted Sixpence fan, if you appreciate their thoughtful music, their lyrics, you should find this a nice package.

5 out of 5 stars Excillent.......2002-06-07

Sixpence-Ntr are amazing, leighs voice gets stronger in each track. This collection of songs are their finest work.
If you like good music, you will love this CD. and I suggest getting other albums of theirs.

5 out of 5 stars Love Alive- Best in Gospel Music.......2004-05-05

My mother bought the 8 track tape of Love Alive when I was a kid and I fell in love with it. I was very sad when she gave it away because it was like losing a friend. Some 20 years later, the songs still are some of the finest gospel music has to offer. I have come full circle now. It just doesn't get any better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2003-06-11

I think that it was one of best recordings that was ever made by them.

doesn't have my favorite track from the anime, wings of fire. but otherwise if you're into 10k beats per minute music (jpop) this should give you something to twitch to. it just goes from track to track with seemingly no end in sight. most of the tracks just blend together, but some stand out no matter what, like "love & money". i died laughing the first time i heard that one. the whole thing actually kind of grows on you and stops too suddenly at the end.

This is a classic freestyle CD with many of the best on one CD. A few of the titles are tough to find on the CD format.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good..........2005-07-31

i already had pretty much all the songs on this cd before i ordered it, but if i find a cd with a lot of songs i like that i don't have to make myself then i grab it (i'm weird like that). this is a non-stop almost 60 minute "mix". the songs are blended at the begining's and end's (nothing very creative about the mixing here) - but the thing i really really like about this disc is that the person(-s?) who compiled the songs chose all the good versions of the tracks (like the original album version of "because of you", the club version of "dreamboy/dreamgirl", the single version of "take me in your arms", etc...) before i got this cd i had never heard "come onto me" and "let me love you for tonight" - "come..." is a great track, but i think this collection could've done without "let me..." (or at least without the vocals)

4 out of 5 stars Well, probably more like 3.5.......2007-06-13

Mega Scum is the first in a new mix series from well-known DJ/producer/remixer, The Scumfrog. While the smoothly transitioned CD -which features new and exclusive tracks from the likes of White Leppard, Gaby Dershin, Swamy, and Scumfrog himself- may be the main reason people will buy this, the cover instantly doubles the entertainment value. It may not be the first "dude looks like a lady" cover in music history, but Scumfrog's nugget pouch hanging down under his miniskirt is a first in my books. Finally, club tunes with some balls. The music is obviously trendy, but, as illustrated by the cover, there is enough ejaculatory grime here to freak out the squares. The persistent, chugging beats may never stop, but the sounds pull in influences from all manner of genre and subgenre so as to leave the IDM guys mildly amused, if not impressed. In any case, for the cover alone, this should be this year's number one Valentine's Day gift.
