They call it "hood rock," but with their debut album, Atlanta's Shop Boyz accomplish something keener than that phrase suggests. With Rockstar Mentality, former mechanics Rasheed "Sheed" Hightower and cousins Demetrius "Meany" Hardin and Richard "Fat" Stephens have coalesced their image as succinctly as any hip-hop group in recent memory. Lead single "Party Like a Rockstar" eclipsed all previous speed records for digital music distribution, capped by the sale of a million ringtones in the track's first six weeks, and though the album's only real "rock" is the committed use of live guitar throughout, these songs nevertheless pay vocal tribute to rock stardom at every opportunity. The title track forces the issue most obviously; "Rollin'"--the Boyz' professed favorite--motors forth on a bass hook pulled right out of the Beach Boys; and "My Car" keeps pace with yet another deeply thumping ode to the joys of automobile ownership. Make no mistake, from the first shout-out of their native "Bowen Homes" to the unrelenting battery of uninspiring rhymes, Rockstar Mentality is urban-radio-ready hip-hop through and through, but the trio's savvy self-image might just corral enough rock-n'-roll, grease-monkey cred to elevate the Shop Boyz' from mentality to reality. --Jason Kirk

Album Description

It all happened so quickly. Or so it seems. One day Sheed, Meany and Fat were grease monkeys at a makeshift garage in their Bowen Homes neighborhood, the next they were swiftly-rising hip-hop stars, progenitors of a growing musical movement they call ``hood rock.'

But like most overnight successes, Shop Boyz's rise to fame took many years. Cousins Demetrius "Meany" Hardin and Richard "Fat" Stephens grew up with best friend Rasheed "Sheed" Hightower in the notorious Bankhead area of Atlanta, the stomping ground of some of the city's most successful hip-hop artists. They worked on cars, hustled, did whatever they could to make ends meet and when their work was done for the day, they turned to their true passion: making music. Their unique, groundbreaking style didn't go unnoticed.

Within four months of its release, "Party Like A Rockstar" set off a frenzy of activity at radio and clubs throughout the southeast and spread like wildfire across the country. The electrifying song with its contagious hook appeals to the spirited, carefree rocker in all of us - from school children and working class dads to hard-core hip-hoppers and blue-haired, Mohawk-wearing Punk Rockers. From note one, excited fans begin strumming air guitars, crowd surfing and building mosh pits that rival those of any major rock concert.

It was the perfect introduction to their unique brand of music. As for their definition of the newly-created sub-genre known as `hood rock, Sheed says, "It's got energy and a rock feel to it but at the same time it's all about rocking the club, getting the club charged up.

Shop Boyz's debut CD, "Rock Star Mentality," is a sampling of the creativity and diversity that go into each and every song that this creative collective churns out. Whether they're flossing and having fun on a track like "My Car" or showing respect for their ladies on "She Knows," Shop Boyz tell new stories in new and exciting ways. "Rain Dance," a sure standout, is bound to inspire some new moves on the dance floor. "It's a lot of energy," says Meany. "I think people are gonna like it because you gotta dance to it. It's another movement." And a group favorite, "Rollin'," is a track the guys swear is actually hotter than their blazing "Party Like A Rockstar."

2 out of 5 stars This album was recorded like a rockstar........2007-06-24

In other words, the Shop Boyz were drunk off their chairs, and high outta their mind when they recorded this album.

I'm not going to say that the Shop Boyz' debut, Rockstar Mentality, is completely unredeemable; but if you're heard the first single, which I'm sure you have, you've already heard the rest of this album. As lyricists, the Shop Boyz are some of the most mind-numblingly linear I've ever heard. As emcees, their flows are competent enough, but certainly nothing above average. The production? Well, most of the production is pretty tight, to be honest. The production is what really saves this album from being the catastrophy most expected it to be.

The lead single, Party Like a Rock Star, was marketed at just the right time. Kids nowadays are moving away from hip-hop, and focusing their attention on pop-punk groups like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and others cut from the same mould; so, in order to capitalize on some form of rock's resurgance in the mainstream, creating a track such as Party Like a Rockstar was the perfect gimmick, and marketing strategy. Mentioning prominent rock artists like Marilyn Manson and Travis Barker, and even the Osbourne family, was also a strategic move to show that the group has some knowledge of rock music; even though they've publically admitted that's far from the truth. So, with a new brand of "Hood Rock," which is basically the same formula Lil' Jon's followed for the past 5 years, the Shop Boyz released their debut album, hoping to move units based off of this track's success alone.

I don't see that happening too well beyond first week sales. The rest of this album follows the same format as that track, with the exception of the two tracks aimed for the ladies, Baby Girl and Next To Me, both of which are decent, musically. Rollin' was good on first listen, but the Beach Boys influence is just downright corny on second listen. The same can be said about the latin-tinged My Car, which, while pretty dope on the musical side of things, is just downright wack in every other aspect.

David Banner's beat on They Like Me sounds like it would've been better fitted on budget rap album from Koch, such as B.G.'s last group album. It's certainly not some of Banner's work, and you kinda feel bad for David just having his name associated with the track. The fact that Totally Dude is Party Like a Rockstar Pt. II is enough to make you smack each and every one of the Shop Boyz. Flexin' and Bowen Homes are genuinely good hip-hop songs from the ATL group, though.

In the end, the Shop Boyz present an album that is not so much a dissapointment, as it does manage to live up to (at least, my) severely low expectations. The problem is, it never goes beyond those low expectations. Proceed with caution when purchasing this album.

Rock meets hip hop. This is good stuff, good tracks...overall a great debut from Atlanta's SHOP BOYZ. ENERGY MUSIC from the HOOD, with a dose of rock to take it to a different level. The album is fun and great to listen to when driving or at club. SHOP BOYZ aren't mocking rock, rather they respect and pay homage to the rockers and more importantly, the rockstar lifestyle. How's your ROCKSTAR MENTALITY? Yall definitely need to pick this up

2 out of 5 stars Was this his idea?.......2007-07-08

I really loved this guy on RockStar INXS: he was an exciting performer with a gorgeous voice and fresh take on the classic music he was given. I loved him so much that I was predisposed to love this CD.

And now, I'm disappointed. Mig has taken some great old rock songs (and some real schlock - seriously, "Kiss From a Rose"?) and turned them all into interchangable easy listening dreck. Any of these covers could be the theme song for Dawson's Creek or One Tree Hill or some other teen angstfest on the WB. That statement alone should tell you everything you need to know about this CD.

With any luck, Mig will be given the opportunity to release another CD, and he'll show us the genius I know he's capable of on that one. I'll be waiting hopefully.

Two stars because the original songs are slightly less awful than the covers.

I was very impressed with Mig when he was on Supernova. now i am more impressed. It was well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars What A Great CD, Mig!.......2007-06-13

I bought this CD as soon as I knew it was released. Mig was my favorite on Rockstar INXS. I love every song on the CD especially the original ones. I think a CD with all originals should be next for Mig.

5 out of 5 stars Love This CD!.......2007-06-09

I was lucky enough to catch one of MiG's acoustic performances during his tour and he is a fantastic performer! He has a great voice that really comes through on this album. "She Loved" should be a top ten hit! I can't wait until the next CD--would love to hear MiG backed up by a full rock band.

    5 out of 5 stars BILL HALEY'S ORIGINAL COMETS.......2004-04-13

I disagree with an earlier review of this CD. The Jodimars did not fail as bad as previously reported. Quite the contrary, they had quite a bit of success in the states with several hits. Their hits may not have made an impact in Germany, but we loved them here in the states. Leaving Haley in the mid fifties over money issues, three of the original Comets left and formed the Jodimars. Well Now Dig This and Let's All Rock Together was a double sided hit in many areas. Their label Capitol was negligent in giving them proper promotion, instead pushing such fluff as violin laden instrumentals and syrupy vocals of other artists. If you're lookin' for tear down the walls, house wreckin' early rock, look no further than this classic collection. If Capitol had done their duty, the Jodimars would have been a bigger success than Haley himself.

5 out of 5 stars All the stuff they did on one CD - and even more. GREAT!.......2000-07-05

They wanted to become as big as Bill Haley, but they failed dramatically. Although the ex-members of the Comets did a good job, they didn't have a hit in the charts. Great stuff, great songs, and a tight production. But there are more highlights: two interviews with Bill Haley and even five extremely rare recordings from the late 60s.

5 out of 5 stars Shake your hip, baby.......2006-05-21

Rocky Burnette, son of rockabilly legend Johnny Burnette and a fine musician in his own right, teamed up with British guitar wizard Darrell Higham & his Enforcers to record this absolutely superb album, paying tribute to his father and uncle.
While all the songs may sound familiar to a real rockabilly/rock'n'roll fan (and when I say rock'n'roll, I mean Jerry Lee Lewis and not the likes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam), these guys manage to add a little extra touch to these true classics.
Check out this album, and if you like it, why not have a look at some of Darrell Higham's other recordings - he's got plenty.

5 out of 5 stars Hip Shakin' Baby: A Tribute to Johnny and Dorsey Burnette.......2005-05-30

Next to Elvis and Chuck Berry, Johnny and Dorsey Burnette where a part of the early days of rock and roll and a part of the rockabilly trio The Johnny Burnette Trio along with guitarist Paul Burlison. Rocky, Johnny's son carries on the Burnette traditon with this album. If you like rockabilly, this "hip shakin" album is for you! Rocky performs many songs that his dad, Johnny wrote for Rick Nelson that were big hits including "Believe What You Say", "It's Late" and "Just a Little Too Much". He performs one of Dorsey's big hits "Bertha Lou" and does three at the end of the album "live" that the Johnny Burnette Trio recorded including "Tear It Up"! He performs these with Darrell Higham, a rockabilly artist from England. I highly recommend this album!
