5 out of 5 stars long live the salsoul orchestra.......2004-04-24

Now this is one hell of an album. If disco and dancing was ever your thing, then this compiliation is absolutly mandatory
It seems like every song is a N.Y club scene classic. The only thing missing was the disco ball!

5 out of 5 stars Another World Of Disco!.......2004-02-09

This collection along with the "Salsoul Classics 2" is very essential to all disco fans that want something different than mainstream artists like Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor...

If you bought "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7", then you will like this collection. Salsoul was just as important to the Disco era as those artists. First Choice, Instant Funk, Double Exposure, and of course The Salsoul Orchestra (which had friendly competition with MFSB and Love Unlimited Orchestra) were talented artists that helped spawn disco. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest songs in Salsoul history.......2004-01-16

Without question the greatest selection of music from the
Disco era and one unforgettable record company.
There is not one day that goes by that I am humming
in my head " My love is free' by Double Exposure.
Loleatta's hits "Hit and run", " Love Sensation" and " Dreamin".
" Doctor Love" and " Double Cross" by First Choice.
The music of 2000 and up will never reach the status of classic.
These are songs that will transcend time and I will never stop
dancing to them.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Salsoul!!.......2003-11-05

This 2-CD set is a collection of some of Salsoul Records' classic tracks, all in their full-length versions. While many songs here may be familiar to those who heard them in the clubs, there are also some tunes that became radio hits ("I Got My Mind Made Up"-Instant Funk, e.g.). The wide variety of sounds found on this set (spanning roughly from 1975 to 1983), is just mesmerizing. Some tunes are ultimate workout numbers: Loleatta Holloway's "Dreamin'", "Love Sensation" and "Hit And Run", Double Exposure's "Ten Percent", and Ripple's "The Beat Goes On". There are two Shep Pettibone remixes from 1983 of previously released records: "Let No Man Put Asunder" (originally recorded by First Choice in 1977) and "Oooh I Love It (Love Break)", a reworking of Salsoul Orchestra's 1975 LP cut "Chicago Bus Stop". Famed Paradise Garage d.j. Larry Levan's "Garage" version of Inner Life's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" clocks in at 10:27. For those who have just become acquainted with the music of this excellent record label, this 2-disc set is worth every penny!! Other fine cuts from this collection include First Choice's "Love Thang" (1979), Aurra's "Checking You Out" (1982), Inner Life's "Moment Of My Life" (also from 1982), and Skyy's "Call Me" (1981).

5 out of 5 stars Chronic Disco Classics.....................2002-11-30

This a great CD to purchase. This CD is packed with jammin disco classics. Many people try to diss disco, but many don't know or understand how DEEP First Choice or Loletta Holloway really are. There are plenty of disco classic on this CD. First Choice & Loletta both got alot of radio play on Chicago's WBMX 102.7 in the 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Sal's Review.......2007-01-16

This is an excellent CD that you will enjoy over and over and over again. I know I have. It is even better than the original LP album because it has so much more to offer. Buy it and you won't be sorry that you did. This is especially for us disco and SalSoul Orchestra fans. So sit right back and enjoy the memories. That's if you can sit, unless you are in the mood for dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of Mom!.......2007-01-15

As a kid in Brooklyn NY my family would listen to this "album" while putting up the Christmas Tree. What memories this brought back, for those of you that remember the original its a bit different but nothing that has stopped me from listening to it over and over again. For those of you who haven't listened to it yet, get a tradition started! It's Great!

3 out of 5 stars FINALLY I'VE GOT MELLOW LOVIN' BY JUDY CHEEKS.......2006-02-26

WOW! HOW LONG I WAS SEARCHING FOR MELLOW LOVIN' BY JUDY CHEEKS. FINALLY I'VE GOT IT. IT DOESN'T MATTER THE ENTIRE COMPILATION IS NOT GOOD, THERE WAS SO MUCH TIME I'D NEVER LISTENED TO MELLOW LOVIN' BY JUDY CHEEKS ANYMORE, I WAS THIRTEEN SINCE THEN (IT WAS ON 1979). SO, WHEN I FOUND IT HERE ON AMAZON.COM, I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT THE OTHER TRACKS - I JUST THOUGHT I BECAME A LITTLE RICHER WHEN I FINALLY GOT THAT PRECIOUS DANCING HIT FOR WICH I WAITED SO LONG AND HOPELESSLY. THEN, IF YOU MISS THAT SONG TOO, SURELY THE BUYING OF THIS COMPILATION WILL BE WORTHWHILE.

1 out of 5 stars Sal Soul Classics.......2005-09-20

The worst I've ever ordered. I sent it back. It had none of the songs that I remember from Sal Soul. Please send money back or list of other Sal Soul songs to choose from.

5 out of 5 stars Another World Of Disco!.......2004-02-09

I'm very happy that a collection like this exists! If you are a disco fan that bought "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7", then you will like this collection! Sure, many of the songs did not rank high on the Billboard charts, but this collection along with "Salsoul Classics vol. 1 & 2" and "Super Rare Disco Vol. 1 & 2" present a different side of disco.

My favorite songs are "Tangerine" and "Spring Rain". Very Essential collection.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of the Salsoul Collections.......2001-07-26

This 2 CD set is the same mixed bag of Salsoul artists as the other collections, but contains some very strong tracks that make it well worth purchasing, especially considering the price. These extended versions range from cheesy soul songs about relationships with neighbors and lovers to exceptional instrumentals ("War Dance" by Kebekelektrik, Silvetti's beautiful "Spring Rain," the intense "Moonboots" by ORS). The garage-raw sound of "Catch Me On The Rebond" showcases Loleatta Holloway at her grittiest. "Let's Celebrate" is wonderful for its music and its lyrics, and is likely the finest song recorded by the group Skyy. "Tangerine" by the Salsoul Orchestra and "Let Me Party With You" by Bunny Sigler are a lot of fun.

4 out of 5 stars SALSOUL IS SENSATIONAL!.......2001-04-04

The SALSOUL ORCHESTRA IS THE EPITOME OF DISCO MUSIC!!I would buy anything of S.O because this is what I heard and danced to at house parties, wedding receptions, anniversaries etc..back in the 70's!This group has a reputation of getting everyone out of their seats!!The main reason why I bought this cd is for 3 songs "SPRING RAIN,LAW & ORDER and JINGO"!!!These are 3 collectors masterpieces/hustle jams that were very hard to find and I am so happy that I finally own this gem!"SPRING RAIN" has the flair of euro-disco with it's sexiness and gorgeous rhytms!"JINGO" is exotic and hypnotic!"LAW & ORDER" is very upbeat, danceable and pulsating like "Double Exposure's Ten Percent".I also enjoyed the mesmerizing electronic synthesizers of "WAR DANCE"!Plus the fun and romantic tunes of "RIO DE JANEIRO"!"I LOVE NY" is another likeable and fun song."RIO and NY" are definetely great vacation advertisers!"TANGERINE" Salsoul's best hit(in my opinion) is very alluring, swingy with dynamic blend of big band and disco tempos!! Four years ago I bought the "SALSOUL ORCHESTRA ANTHOLOGY" also (highly recommended) so I have "TANGERINE" on 2 separate cds now. Another groovy and funky hit was "DOUBLE CROSSED"!Just about everything FIRST CHOICE put out was a dancefloor thriller!! "THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH and MOONBOOTS" had to grow on me but the remaining songs on this cd I don't like. That's the reason why I rate this with 4 stars instead of 5.Only a person who grew up in the 70's and experienced the powerful and charismatic disco orchestra of SALSOUL can appreciate this collectors classic!!!!! (P.S. there are no edited versions or remakes on this 2 cd set so you can enjoy the original extended mixes!)

Album Description

The first recording act signed to the Salsoul label. Compiled with love by Jeremy 'Mr Salsoul' Newall and Ian "Mastercuts" Dewhirst, you can be assured that this 2CD anthology has left no stone unturned! It follows the best moments of the orchestra from it's inception, the Vince Montana Jr years, right the way through to their later recordings with producers Tom Moulton, Bunny Sigler, Stan Lucas and Patrick Adams. Also included are some rarities which are not on other collections, like the previously unreleased Tom Moulton mix of "Salsoul Hustle", the brilliant "Alpha Centuri", "It's A New Day", the brilliant pounding "I'll Keep You Warm" and the highly sought-after "Resorts International". Sal Soul. 2006

Here's what is missing that should have unquestionably have been on this anthology to make it more complete. Other than that, you get mostly album versions, a couple of 12" versions, and an EDIT of the Charo track Dance a Little Bit Closer!!! And did we REALLY need cover versions of Bee Gees disco hits??? Album Description

Sut/l Vibes by The Montana Sextet beautifully highlights the legendary Vibraharpist, Vincent Montana, Jr. on a more intimate level, recalling his earlier jazz roots. Giving new life to both classic and modern standards, Montana's instrumental arrangements feature a wide variety of formats from mellow grooves to up-tempo tunes; to a Latin or a laid-back feel, with all tracks topped with spontaneous and soulful vibe solos by the master himself. This smooth and classy compilation is accessible to a wide range of jazz, R&B and Quiet Storm formats and expresses a side to Vincent Montana, Jr. of which he is less known....as an extraordinary jazz musician.

"That's What Friends Are For" is the theme song to radio host Donnie McKethan's "Jazz and More" program on WPFW 89.3 FM (Thursdays at 7pm - Washington DC)

    5 out of 5 stars Salsoul rules!.......2005-10-23

On this double cd you'll find all three First Choice-albums that were released on the famous Salsoul Label, plus a couple of lovely remixes of the disco-classics 'Doctor Love', 'Let no man put asunder', 'Double cross' and 'Love thang'. The voices of the three ladies - especially leadsinger Rochelle Fleming - are fantastic. The sound is perfect, there's a booklet with all the information you need, plus an interview with Rochelle. Buy this one, you won't regret it! And check out the other Salsoul-reissues (Loleatte Holloway, Inner Life (feat. Jocelyn Brown), Candido, The Salsoul Orchestra). The British label Suss'd! Records has really done a great job.

    4 out of 5 stars a great cd.......2002-01-27

this is the first salsoul gold master in a series of three. this This the best one. all the songs are terriffic. true you get the salsoul hustle on Salsouls greatest hits but not the extended version! then you have the dance a little bit closer by charo. at first hearing it might sound corny but after a few plays its very hypnotic. then you get the smaller talents that are not on the Salsoul classics 1-4. The best on here are Dance a litle bit closer, helplessly, Falling in love, Love is finally comin' my way. The others are unreleased versions you already have if you got the Salsoul classics 1-4. My least favorite is love is you.

      3 out of 5 stars Andre 3000's role-model needs more product........2007-07-02

LET ME PARTY WITH YOU is Sigler's big hit album because of the one song; but if you look deeper you'll find an intriguingly original artist. A number of his albums aren't listed in Amazon because they've yet to be issued digitally. It is my hope that by writing about a few of these, someone will consider undertaking that task.

1980's LET IT SNOW is Bunny Sigler's last album on Sal-Soul, and a strangely catchy amalgam of pop songwriting techniques. One wonders if Sigler threw in everything AND the kitchen sink because he preminisced this would be his last solo album for 23 years. It has long been my opinion that Bunny's 1976 album MY MUSIC, is the complete blueprint for Andre 3000's whole shtick, and even LET IT SNOW has little things to remind us who originated it all. There's acapella intros, tacked onto heavily funked up love songs, with frequent kazoo breaks, sudden Funkadelic style guitar bits, latin conga solos, random vibraphone washes, sharp horn stabs, sudden psychedelic synth wooshes and mind melting vocal effects; all with Spinners-style back-up vocals over a powerful bass and drum combo (which is either the rhythm section from Instant Funk or MFSB).

"Super Duper Super Man" moves from a children's record style 'Dark Kent' sketch to a majorly thumpin' funk breakin' disco bomb, while the title track is a mid-tempo heavy funk love song. "Girl You Driving Me Crazy" is a fairly normal uptempo disco number, except there's the seemingly off-the-cuff spoken intro with sweet nothing's like ... "Git your hands out my pockets baby; but while you got 'em in there..." that's dead on Andre 3000; and off course then there's the brain disintegrating trip-out ending. "Dis Away & Dat Away" is possibly the least original idea here, feeling a bit like a Gap Band meets the O'Jays love child, except for the five part harmonies, Prince-style rhythm guitar parts and of course; the kazoo. "How Can I Tell Her" is in the Commodores slow groove zone and really is the most normal of the bunch though Sigler still has fun when it comes to singing "Gee, I really hate to leave you right now" in the most disingenuous fashion (Andre again); while "Slow Down" is a seriously coked up disco stomper that brings to mind a high-steppin' Pointer Sisters buttshaker. Other than "How Can I Tell Her," there's not a radio-friendly hit in the bunch, for much the same reason P-Funk found the hits few and far between; there's some weird s**t going on here! But if you like your groove with alot of character and originality, this could be good to you. Sigler comes from the smoother side of the same planet that Jimmy Castor and Swamp Dogg are from. I mean; his name is Bunny for cryin' out loud! If you're wondering whether to stick your toe in, his MY MUSIC album is a much stronger introduction, though this one's only slightly toned down. As for myself; I dig it. Somebody please add this title to Amazon, and issue a CD.

By the way, after a half dozen years of telling people about this guy & how influential songwriter he is; I just learned he's featured on the songs "Hey Ya" and "Speakerboxxx" by Outkast. Kudos to them for including the prototype once they found success.

4 out of 5 stars Let me Party with you.......2007-01-21

Salsoul Music comes through with Bunny Sigler's "Let me Party with you" on CD. My only complaint is that the album has not been remastered. Song times:

      1. Let Me Party With You (Party-Party-Party) (12:25)
      2. Your Love Is So Good (09:51)
      3. I Got What You Need (07:18)
      4. I'm A Fool (4:01)
      5. It's Time To Twist (05:43)
      6. Don't Even Try (Give It Up) (4:41)
      7. Only You (06:15)

I agree with the assessment that "Let me Party With You" has a similiar sound/feel to "Got to give it up" by Marvin Gaye. Still a good song though. Again, I do feel that this CD is a great value ($7.50/US), I just wish it had been remastered...Four stars!!

Un CD verdaderamente entrañable para los amantes del sonido disco. Arreglos excelentes, muy típicos de la Salsoul Orchestra. Es un trabajo muy recomendable que refleja toda una epoca.

4 out of 5 stars Actually, I give it Three and a Half Stars!.......2003-06-30

If the group had not been labeled "a disco band", The Salsoul Orchestra may have had a longer "shelf life". Like Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra, the ensemble was a group of highly skilled musicians that just happened to be associated with the carefree days of Studio 54, platform shoes, and the hustle.
"Magic Journey" did not sell well because of the diversity of the selections offered. The band was just trying to show that it could do more than disco. The collection of songs here is varied, featuring the typical music of the era to tracks suitable for a concert hall.

Examples of the former are: "It's a New Day", "Run Away" (a disco gem with leads vocals from diva Loleatta Holloway), and a dead-on-the-money interpretation of Earth, Wind, & Fire's "Fantasy". On the classical side, there is a wonderful medley paying homage to the '76 Olympics.

Also, "Alpha Centuri" possesses a similar sound as exhibited by T.S.O.P., another group of musicians responsible for backing the likes of The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.
The group gets into a playful mood with re-workings of two popular classics, "Guantanamera" and "Short Shorts".

Inasmuch as music, like much of popular culture, goes in cycles, maybe The Salsoul Orchestra, in some form or another, will rise, as the phoenix, from the abyss of obscurity.

Until that time, I'll just pull out the vinyl and wax nostalgic.

      4 out of 5 stars A wonderful dance R&B collection........1999-04-10

Terrific mid-70's dance/R&B but not a dated sound at all. Great instrumentals and vocals, expecially by Lolita Holloway. If you like dance, and can appreciate the early disco music, this is a great CD.
