Tinsley Ellis has earned a reputation for heavy blues-rock guitar since he quit Atlanta's Heartfixers in 1987. Often it's been a little too heavy, ignoring the dynamic nuances that bring out the emotional nature of the blues. But Ellis's first album for Telarc lightens up just enough, so the sweet-and-high six-string intro to "Stuck in Love" enhances the song's guitar melody and the tenderness of his lyrics. He aims for a softer, thinner tone on "Real Bad Way" and turns "Feel No Pain" into a slow, soulful essay in guitar anxiety, full of telling fills, bends, and solo breaks. He also plays some acoustic numbers that allow the butter-and-black-pepper tones of his Southern-accented voice to emerge. Not that Ellis is playing things too cool; there's still plenty of guitar fire all over this record. It's just that he's learned to control the burning. --Ted Drozdowski

Great Blues!.......2006-03-16
Saw this band perform in Key West, and knew I had to have the CD. And it is all it is hyped. great blues music and even better in person!
Continues His Hot Streak.......2004-05-21
Coming off of his previous release to this "Kingpin," this is another fine recording. You get alittle of everything on here, but it's all blues. Of particular note to me was the instant classic "Feelin' No Pain," over 8 minutes of awesome blues and no-wasted-notes soloing by Ellis. "Stuck In Love" is over 6 minutes of the same, excellent soloing by Ellis. My other favorite was "All I Can Do", which borrows the guitar riff from Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic." This is blues done with style and I highly recommend it.
"Tinsleys' Best!".......2003-11-15
I'll make it short and sweet..... by far Tinsley Ellis' best effort to date. When I bought this CD I thought after the first two tracks, nothing special....... but the next nine tracks in a row from "Mystery To Me" to "Ten Year Day" is in my opinion, the finest material Tinsley has released in his career...so far. If you buy only one Tinsley Ellis CD, do yourself a favor, make it "Hell Or High Water" I guarantee.... there will be no disappointment!
Tinsley Ellis at his best.......2002-07-13
Tinsley is an unbelievable live performer who absolutely plays and sings from the heart, but his albums don't always capture this energy. I was lucky enough to catch this set live before listening to the CD and while Hell Or High Water won't be mistaken for a live performance, it is the closest thing to the "real" Tinsley Ellis I have heard on disk. Over the years Tinsley has continued to hone his craft as both a guitarist and vocalist resulting in a CD that shows us a mature performer with great command of his instrument, who can tear it up without ever getting out of control. While this CD may fall into a niche market, for those who appreciate Tinsley's work, this is a great CD.
Still Kicking it!.......2002-04-29
Tinsley still rocks! His first sortie with Telarc leaves nothing to be desired for Southern Blues/Rock fans - and Telarc brings the kind of warmth and directness of sound that one would expect of such an effort! I feel this album above his previous efforts, captures more of the "live" essence that sets him apart. Blues with alot of rock and a whole lot of soul! Simple vibes that ring true - genuine stuff from the heart. 'Hell or high water' sets the tone and 'Stuck in love', 'Real bad way' and 'Set love free' bing it home! Plenty of emotion and lots of soul. His best all-around effort yet!

First Purple.......2006-05-19
This is the first DP release I've ever heard in my life, but it didn't take me long to get into them..I'm also not a big fan of metal, not that they're overly metal-sounding. It took me a song or two to get used to the singer's voice, but once I did, the music was perfect.
Deep Purple is great at creating an atmosphere, blending heavy rock guitar with great organ/keyboards and some quality drumming. They're also good at creating more subtley melodic (i.e. the keyboards) and organic music (see Anyone's Daughter), and I enjoy the structure of their songs, the back-to-back solos (on Child of Time the guitarist and keyboardist get into it like a duel--stunning). Very great rock music.
Average, But Beats Nobody's Perfect.......2005-06-10
The title says alot. But it might be more telling for me to say that this live document is the best of the Mach II reunion/post 1984-with-Blackmore live releases. But that's not saying too much. For Blackmore fanatics, I'd reccomend ANY of the '70's Deep Purple and Raibow live albums before this one. Jon Lord sounds good on keyboards, and Gillan's voice isn't totally fried yet. But I wasn't as impressed with the extended solo on "Anja" as so many appear to be...get Deep Purple's "Powerhouse", "In Concert" and most definitely "Made in Japan" before you get this one.
Stunning. And I'm not just saying that!.......2002-11-17
I have been a devoted Deep Purple fan for 30 years, but I tell it like it is. Trust me when I say that this live performance, recorded mostly in October 1993 in Stuttgart, Germany, is absolutely stunning. After countless listenings in recent years, I never tire of the dramatic power and delicate nuance brought forth with such virtuosity by Blackmore, Gillan, Lord, Glover and Paice. The whole atmosphere of the recording is so encompassing that it makes me feel as if I'm standing wide-eyed on stage with the band. Given the exceptional performance, flawless sound quality, and historical significance of this scintillating concert (being one of Blackmore's last with Purple), this CD is simply essential.
Live and Clean.......2001-10-20
I hate most live albums because the recorded sound is bad, but this live album sonically amazing, I suspect it has been retouched in studio. Any info?
Made In Japan - Not Quite!!.......2001-08-24
I guess the thought of another live album by the classic Mk II line-up of Deep Purple tends to create higher expectations than the quality of the results. Although the music itself is pretty good, the quality of the overall package leaves a little to be desired. For example, the cover lists a set of tracks. However, my CD player tells me that there are several more on the actual disc than appear on the cover, including "Lazy", "Woman From Tokyo" and "Space Truckin". Is there something ironic about the fact that this album only includes three tracks from the reunion period? Maybe they were starting to feel a little uncomfortable with this. Well Ritchie obviously was! Unlike some people I always liked "Anyone's Daughter" as a studio track, but the live version included here makes me wonder whether it was worth dusting it off after all these years. On the positive side it was good to hear the band actually rocking out - but was the souvenir of the era worth it? A must for Deep Purple completists like me, but for the casual listener, go for "Made In Japan" or even the 2CD "In Concert" set.

Great CD.......2000-09-09
I was really pleased with the music on this CD. She really puts feeling and voice into her songs. What a refreshing change from some of the cookie cutter CDs of late. I hope this is just the first in a long career of music productions. Any chance of a tour to the east coast?
Dynamic!!.......2000-09-05
This is one of the best CD's I've listened to this year. There is something for everyone's flavor. From sultry ballads to foot stomping up-beat country and I loved them all. I'd highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants quality for their dollar. Every song on the CD is professionally mastered and performed. Serina is certainly a mainstay in this industry. Her voice is unique and I want to know why she isn't on the radio?
UNIGUE.......2000-08-21
if you are sick of the same old same old from country cd's, then check this one out! great mix of tracks, ranging from slow soft melody to rip roaring rock! this is hottest cd in my collection!
