While most neo-soulsters crank out albums like their hip-hop counterparts, Jill Scott takes a more traditional approach to her craft. Four years after the release of her debut, Who Is Jill Scott, Words & Sounds Vol. 1, Scott returns with the masterful Beautifully Human: Words & Sounds Vol. 2. The album features a collection of lush and hypnotic songs that will make you want to fall in love, live life, and be a better person all at the same time. Lead single "Golden" is a prime example of this. Set to a midtempo groove made for the dance floor, "Golden" is a shiny, beautifully-written narrative about living life to its fullest. The old-school R&B ballad vibe of "Petition" is reminiscent of Minnie Ripperton or early Chaka Khan. However, "Bedda at Home" is anything but laid back. Combining elements of jazz, soul, and old-school hip-hop breakbeats, Scott extols the greatness of her man with a swagger that can only be described as cool. Other highlights include "Family Reunion" and the socially conscious "Rasool."
The album's only flaw may be that it ends too soon, but then again it's always better to leave a listener wanting more. For Scott, being "Beautifully Human" means just that--finding the allure in all that life has to offer and that's well worth the wait. --Rashaun Hall
Customer Reviews:
a little let-down.......2007-06-30
her first album really raised the bar, a bar she herself couldn't leap, climb, or crawl over with her next. there's a few good songs on this one yet the pace as a whole is slumpy and slower...not as upbeat and uplifting.
jill scott.......2007-06-30
she is an amazing talent. really enjoyed this album. she has a way with words
Just TRY to Justify Your Hatred For This Album.......2007-06-30
Because it will always be unfounded. No matter what, you can't say that this entire album is horrible. From our hauting intro to the continuing positivity throughout it, this album is just wonderful. I got started on Jill way too late into the game, but it's never to late to love this girl. Can't find a track that I don't want to play here, especially since, like her first album, they relate to humans! All of us feel certain ways, and need messages promoted here: Golden-Life is good, and we should live it. (The Fact Is) I Need You-Many people don't like to admit it, but sometimes, we do need that other being in our lives for love. Spring Summer Feeling-Thank you for denouncing that materialistic mentality that plagues present day urban music. You can go on and on with this, from the funky "Bedda At Home" & the huge Jazz Band in "Talk to Me", to the reality of "Family Reunion", and the sensuality of "Whatever", "Not Like Crazy", and the interlude. And, then you have your socially conscious music with "Rasool", and "My Petition". What a wonder! But, many say that this album is not good ONLY because they are comparing it to Vol. 1. Nah, they are in two different catagories. Vol. 1 & Experience, then Vol. 2, and probably whatever is coming next. Keep living, Jill Scott! You've made many see that there is still room for true music in this world. Get the album, then head over to Experience for her live set. Matter of fact, get everything. At least we can know that we can keep playing her 4-6 years from now.
It's Jill Scott... of course it's hot.......2007-05-18
some cuts resonated with me the first time I heard them... a few of the songs are more personalized and less universal, so they took a little longer to grow on me (but they do grow on you)... it's Jill Scott... you have to add this to your collection
Just Beautiful.......2007-05-09
I have never heard anything that can put me in such a relaxed state of mind.It brought back memories of things I haven't thought of in years. Good memories!! It is by far my favorite album. I lost my first cd and I purchased it again

Amazing Compalation That Takes You Back.......2005-10-18
Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 7 is another amazing set of classic slow jams. Volume 7 mainly deals with songs all concering some form of heartbreak. Sukiyaki,Love On A Two Way Street, Tears, Toast To The Fool are all truthfully with heartbreaking harmonies and ever singer is in top form. The song that stands out the most to me to Try Again by Champagin. The song is dire need of a remake by a capable artist like Jon B. or Brian Mcknight. Other stand out tracks include the classic baby maker Love You Down By Ready For The World. So light some candles, burn some inscense and break out the starwberries and go back to a time when love was love.
Nice and Smooth!!!.......2003-10-22
This is a very nice compilation of slow jams and I really enjoy this cd a lot and I would recommend this cd to anyone who enjoys oold school and who likes Rhythm and Blues. Every song on here is solid and this album brings back a lot of memories and I really do enjoy this album and I would truly recommend this album to any old school and Rhythm and Blues lover this is a really great compilation cd. My favorites are: Dreamboy-Don't Go
Champagne'- Try Again and many great other songs so therefore if you like slow music, old school, and rhythm and blues then I would truly reccommend you to buy this album!!!!
Just the right CD for that special date.......2003-08-25
This one has the perfect collection of love songs. I remember Sukiyaki when it was first done in Japanese. They used to play it so frequently on the radio. I thought it was a beautiful song since I didn't know what they were really saying. When Taste Of Honey transalated it back in 1981, I saw it was about a love gone sour. The original singer did not ask for his rights to the translated version even though Taste Of Honey offered it to him. Try Again is also a great song that brings back memories. Yes, the group Champaign is from Champaign, IL.

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as I hoped.......2006-08-21
I was excited to get this CD but unfortunately the songs are too short- a fact I overlooked as I like to 'get on in' to my classic grooves, and I don't play it much at all.
Disappointed.......2005-08-31
Having very carefully chosen this CD based on my own memory of the tunes, the music sampler available and, most importantly, comments from other reviewers, it transpires that only 3/20 tracks are more than 4 minutes long. Majority of the tracks are between 3-4 minutes long. Not what I would term as 'Super Rare Disco' at all. Rare Disco is surely the full length 12 inch mixes that would have been played in the clubs, as opposed to radio edits!!! Yes, I realised there were 20 tracks in total on this CD...but not one of the previous reviwers stated all 20 tracks were on just ONE CD, nor the fact that majority of the tracks were radio edits. Shame, as majority of the tracks themselves are very good. Disappointed.
worth buying.......2005-01-13
Super Rare Disco, Vol. 2, is a definite must have for anyone looking for authentic disco classics. Although not every track is great the majority are, and one doesn't have to hunt around buying a lot of CD's for one track. It's worth the investment.
SUPER RARE DISCO, Vol. 1 & 2.......2004-04-19
One of the best collections of 1970's hustle music. As a former New Yorker, I still own hundreds of hustle 45's and 12-inch dance records from the 70's and wanted to get the same songs on CDs. This collection of 40 hard-to-find disco songs (on Volume 1 & 2) is great. I liked Volume 2 slightly better than Volume 1, but both are excellent. Even the liner notes are incredibly well-written by a New Yorker who really appreciates classic disco music and who lived through the NY dance club scene in the 70's.
Excellent Collection!.......2004-02-09
If you are a disco fan that has "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7" and are looking for something different, then look no further then this collection along with volume 1. It's a great supplement with the well-known mainstream artists. The packaging is superb: entertaining liner notes along with song credits and chart positions. Highly recommended along with volume 1.

Customer Reviews:
Great coverage of a great era.......2001-08-10
1969-70 may not have been a good era for the country (Vietnam, Kent State, etc), but it was a very good era for Soul music. Songs like "grazing in the Grass," "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time" (check out the intro), "Oh Happy Day," and yes, "Color Them Father" and "A rainy Night In Georgia" (the last two are known mostly to those who remember AM radio at the time). If you were there, you'll love this collection. If you weren't there, this is a great intro. Enjoy.
"Songs That Will Live On For Always".......2000-10-21
These are timeless treasures, songs that will live on forever. They remind us of the good days when good songs were worth listening to and become a part of our daily lives. We will never get any group as good as the Winstons. They did not stay around for a long time but they gave the world a song entitled, "Colour Him Father," that is the greatest tribute to fathers and men in general. I wish the present day artists and songwriters would listen to this collection before they start their next project, it would make listening to music fun again.
if you cant dig this one you are dead........1999-10-24
you just cant say anything bad about a collection that has going in circles AND color him father in it. when brook benton sez feels like its raining all over the world, you almost feel damp. even if you didnt dig soul you would dig this album. it came from a time before miriah careys "notes per square inch" style, and lyric were sung, in harmoney no less, and not rapped out with a lot of mutha fukahs and canned drums. check it out and remember the magic of a.m. radio.
Color Him Father is the most beautiful tribute to a father.......1999-04-09
Out of print for many years Color Him Father, heard on WCBS-FM in New York on occassion is the 50's equivilent of Dan Fogelberg's Leader of the Band.

GREAT BUY!!!.......2002-05-08
Alright, here it is. There are many compilations out there that has a great selection of hits. Still, if the songs in the collection are a bunch three minute short versions; let's face it, the collection isn't all that. Hey, I was out there in the clubs shaking my booty right along with everybody else. I remember all those great dance-jams that seemed to go on forever (and you were glad because you hoped those songs and that moment would never end). My point is that if the compilations with songs from that era which are coming out now are not the full length extended versions then it's basically a waste of time and money.
Now, all I have of this series is volume I, II & IV. So, regarding this series, that's all I have to go by. Still, if you're like me and is looking for a disco-compilations of not only just a great collection of hits but also the full length extended versions of them then this is and another compilation series called "THE BIG 12 INCHES" is it.
This is a pretty good one........2000-08-31
I got excited with the S.O.S. band and the Whispers. They are so hot. Overall this is a pretty good CD.

Soul Music The Way It Should Be.......2006-05-08
Now THIS is music. Nothing that's out on the radio today can compete with what they call "old school" music. Listen to "Band Of Gold" by Freda Payne, "Love On A Two-Way Street" by The Moments, or "The Bells" by The Originals and you'll see what I mean. "The Bells" is the prettiest song on this CD; the harmonies are breathtaking, the lyrics will break your heart, and the instrument arrangement, with the harp and bells, is divine.
This CD should be required listening for any artist or group that's even contemplating getting into the music biz.
Captures a very good year for Soul Music.......2001-08-10
This CD concentrates on some sweet soul hits from 1970, a very good year for music that was kind to the ear. Here we have "Ooh Child" by the 5 Stairsteps,. a beautiful, warm tune that is my personal favorite song of all time. We also have "Love Land" by Charles Wright, who wasn't one o my favoirte artists but this was a damn good tune. The enclosed version of 'Love on a 2 Way Street" by the moments is the short version, not the one with the classic ending "Bye Bye baby, bye bye." And there;s "Love Won;t Let me Be Lonely" by the Freinds of Distinction, with it's tempo changes that flow quite well. All in all, a first class collection from a very good year for this music.

Covers 1971-72 quite well.......2001-08-10
This time about, our friends at Rhino take us to what Soul radio stations were playing in 1971-72. Lou Rawls "Natural Man" is a wonderful song that is seldom heard today (perhaps because of it's dated theme). The ever popular "Thin Line Between Love In Hate" is here and so is The Dramatics marvelous "What you see is What You Get." Enjoy! Classic Soul rules and gangsta rap stinks!
VERY SOULFUL.......2000-04-18

Soul Music at it's finest.......2007-02-05
What a great cd!!!!! Every song is a timeless classic, especially Proud Mary!!!! My favorite songs on this album are Right on the Tip of My Tongue, Deeper and Deeper, and I love You(for all seasons). I recommend this cd to anyone who would like to hear good songs from the 1970s!!!!!!!!!!
Great One-Hit Wonders From The Last Golden Years of Soul.......2000-02-22
Rhino Records released "Didn't It Blow Your Mind" series of one-shot R&B hits as a companion to its "Have A Nice Day" 70s pop song series. Wisely, "Didn't It" comes without the smirking irony many of "Have"'s musical cheese puffs deserved.
This is because of the greater music quality here. Those who've heard King Floyd's "Groove Me" on the body soap commercials will marvel as its stop-start groove spreads over a too-short three minutes. Two gorgeous ballads, the Fuzz' "I Love You For All Seasons" and the shimmering Philly soul of Brenda & The Tabulations "Right on The Tip of My Tongue," matched up to more socially-concious fare from two Brunswick-label soul groups, the Chi-Lites and the Lost Generation (with the gimmicky "Sly, Slick, & Wicked") Outstanding (non-Aretha) female voices come to the fore here as they wouldn't for another five years: Tina Turner (on "Proud Mary"), Jackie Moore (the disco fave "Precious Precious"), Mavis Staples (with Pops and family on Bobby Bloom's "Heavy Makes You Happy") even Sly Stone's sister on "Somebody's Watching You." Things are a little un-PC on the two Chairman of the Board songs, but hey, guys were like that then. This is a fine collection of transitional soul that, as with many Rhino collections, beats collecting out-of-print singles yourself.
